I

Dear Members, hope you enjoyed the start to 2022 and were able to watch some of the Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic at the end of January. Having witnessed Henrik Stenson lift the Dallah trophy back in 2007, my first classic experience, through to Viktor Hovland triumphing in a sudden death play off last month, it truly was the best tournament I can remember.

It was great to receive similar comments from the European Tour, players and sponsors – a big thank you to Falcon the tournament organizers and promoters for creating a special atmosphere throughout the week with free entry for all! Approximately 60,000 spectators came through the gates across the four days to generate a memorable event for all involved. If you have any feedback on the event including potential improvements for next year, please feel free to share. One area that suffered due to the increase in spectators was the congestion outside the club and specifically arriving a couple of hours before the leaders went out. We will endeavor to work with Falcon to see how this arrival experience can be improved and how best to utilize the metro!

Membership

Following the feedback at the end of 2021 on member play that reached levels 40% higher than the pre-covid era it was excellent to see a record membership renewal rate of 94%. Thank you for your continued support of the club. As a result, Golf Membership will close from 1st March 2022. A waiting list will be adopted for all golfing categories.

EGC Member Party – 15th March 2022 Due to the covid pandemic we have missed out on the staging of our annual members party, please be informed the date for this season’s party will be 15th March 2022. If you wish to join and haven’t replied to the invitation already, please RSVP to Valance as VDaniel@ dubaigolf.com for this complimentary celebration.

Golf Etiquette

Golf Carts

Thank you for your support of the Golf Etiquette drive. Sadly, since 5th October 153 members have breached one of the five etiquette pillars (pitch mark repairing, bunker raking, divot filling, cart etiquette and pace of play).

As you will by now have experienced the new 180-strong cart fleet was rolled out into the operations from the 9th February, I do hope these have enhanced the comfort of your golf experience. As with the Golf Etiquette drive please help us look after and maintain the cart fleet. We did have one cart turned over on day two due to reckless driving. You may have also noticed damage to the fairways from the new tyres. This damage can be prevented and is caused by drivers turning to acutely so please bare this in mind during your round.

SAVEFAST

O

n 9th February 2022 SaveFast Training Academy CEO Mania Hossaini, signed an agreement confirming the company as Dubai Golf’s preferred training Partner. The signing was attended by Mr. Osama Abu Wishah (Vice Chairman) and Mr. Ian Littlefield (Operations Manager) from SaveFast and Mr. Jabez Olagunju (Training Executive) and Mr. Ganesan Mangathil (Health, Safety & Security Manager).

CL UB

SaveFast is delighted to support Dubai Golf in its efforts to develop a robust safety culture, implemented by a well-trained, competent and highly motivated workforce. SCHOOL OF RULES

I

*Interesting Facts:

Dear Members, n this month’s article I would like to provide you with a useful sequence when considering Penalty Drops on the golf course. These drops can be broken down into three main categories as follows:

• As stated in the rules, “your ball is in a penalty area when any part of it lies on or touches the ground or anything else inside the edge of the penalty area, or is above the edge or any other part of the penalty area”.

1. Yellow Penalty Areas These are defined by yellow painted lines or yellow stakes. In this scenario you have two options; A) Play again or B) Drop back behind and on line with the pin

• A player may always choose to play their ball when it is in a penalty area. They may also now ground their club in a penalty area, as long as they do not improve their lie in doing so.

2. Red Penalty Areas These are defined by red painted lines or red stakes. In this scenario you have three options; A) Play again or B) Drop back behind and on line with the pin or C) Take relief of two clublengths (no nearer the hole)

• The player may stand inside a penalty area when playing a ball that lies outside that penalty area, including, where relevant, when just after taking relief from that penalty area.

3. Unplayable Ball This occurs when the golfer’s ball is deemed not possible to play and a penalty drop must be taken. In this scenario you have three options; A) Play again or B) Drop back behind and on line with the pin or C) Take relief of two clublengths (no nearer the hole)

If you have any rules queries that you would like to discuss over the coming weeks then please do not hesitate to ask on your next visit to the club or simply email your query to me at churley@dubaigolf.com.

A useful memory aid is as follows: Yellow = AB - A (Again) & B (Behind) Red = ABC - A (Again) & B (Behind) & C (Clublengths) Unplayable = ABC – A (Again) & B (Behind) & C (Clublengths)

If you enjoyed the article and found it helpful, feel free to drop me an email at the above address, quote the code SORACH, and be entered into a prize draw!

INTRODUCING

the time apart is difficult, it does have one benefit – it is quiet. While work can be busy, I do enjoy the downtime and the wide variety of golf courses the UAE has to offer from Yas Links in Abu Dhabi to Al Hamra in Ras Al Khaimah.

Official Starter at Emirates Golf Club

Having the chance to play a round of golf is often difficult with a young family, now is the time to make up for that. Aside from golf, I do like football or dare I say it – soccer, and while not directly from the city, I am a Liverpool supporter but please don’t hold that against me.

PETER COWEN ACADEMY

TIP OF THE MONTH SPRING LOADED FOR SUCCESS BY STEPHEN DEANA

Dear Members, We trust all’s well and you’ve been enjoying your golfing season. It’s been great to see many of you enjoying The Peter Cowen Academy and developing your games with regular tuition. This month I’d like to share with you some exercises that will help you understand how to use the ground better, now to match your body and arms correctly and take control of his overall game. At the Peter Cowen Academy we teach our students the movement patterns required for the swing. Follow the below exercises and let’s get you all moving better!

PART ONE: BODY SPIRAL Simply stand vertical with your feet together. Imagine your body as a spring, that’s why we call it a coiling motion. Now mimic this spring like coiling action with your body. Simply pull your weight up and around from the ground with a spring like coil as shown below. This movement pattern is the first thing we have to get right. If we don’t the body won’t work properly and we will struggle. The spiralling body pattern pulling against the ground, with your abs, midsection and chest spiralling up whilst keeping our shoulders level. It’s important for us that all our students understand the spiral.

PART TWO: SHOULDER/ARM SPIRAL Again stand vertical with your feet together as we increase the movement up through the shoulders and arms. If the body is working like a spring up, the shoulders have to spiral up and down also As we start the second part of the exercise the left arm spirals left and the right arm spirals right The spiral continues up to the shoulders. Most players have been taught to turn and turn. Unfortunately they don’t get the spiral with the body and certainly not with the shoulders and arms. For many players this has and will create lower back problems which can be avoided when moving correctly. Once up let the shoulders/arms drop to create a momentum drop. This drop creates acceleration in the implement you’re holding and this can be increased the higher you spiral your arms during the initial movement pattern.

PART THREE: MATCHING MOVEMENTS Again from a vertical position with our feet together we combine the body and arm spiral. A simple movement pattern but now we’re matching the movements and everything’s in sync. The basis of our coaching is to get the body working better and combine the hand arm and club movement together. Eventually we put an implement in our hands and that moves as a consequence of the body and arms moving correctly. The above movement pattern exercises should be used as part of your daily warmup. A minimum of 60 secs per exercise and you’ll enjoy the improvement in your game. For more assistance please come and visit us at the Academy. PE TE R

TOURNAMENTS UPDATE It doesn’t seem right to provide a Tournament Update without mentioning the Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic!

What a fantastic week it was. With the new sponsor Slync.io, as well as the addition of the event being part of the Rolex Series, I think many of you will agree it was the best Desert Classic for many a year. While of course it was a shame crowd favourite Rory Mcilroy couldn’t add to his previous two titles, it was great to see the young Viktor Hovland claim victory and move to #3 in the World Rankings.

M

oving from the SDDC to the EGC tournament calendar, the infamous OMA Emirates Midnight Madness event was played in the first half of February. 100+ brave golfers ventured out to golf from 23:00 through to 07:30 the next morning. For those members who have not played the event, it is certainly a fantastic experience and one to keep an eye out for in 2023. The calendar over the next few months is shaping up nicely, with the 2022 Emirates Club Championships on the 26th & 27th February, The Indian Invitational in early March as well as Abulfattah Sharaf’s and Amarjeet Radia’s Captains Days not long after. Please remember to keep an eye on tournament sign ups through the Viya app.

MEMBER EVENT FEEDBACK The Tournament Committee is always open to ideas from members on how we can improve your experience in our club tournaments. While events must be run in accordance to R&A, USGA & WHS guidelines, please feel free to contact Joe (jway@dubaigolf.com) with any feedback or suggestions. We look forward to welcoming you to the events in the coming weeks and months!

HOVLAND WINS FIRST ROLEX SERIES TITLE IN DUBAI V

I knew I had to shoot a really low number but a lot of things had to go my way and I’m thankful that they did.

iktor Hovland won his first Rolex Series title as he completed a sensational finish with a play-off victory over Richard Bland at the 2022 Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic.

Hovland becomes the first Norwegian to win a Rolex Series event and adds this title to his maiden DP World Tour victory at the 2021 BMW International Open.

The Norwegian was barely in the picture when he missed a short putt and made a bogey on the 15th but he finished birdie-eaglebirdie to sign for a 66 and post the target at 12 under.

It is his third win in five starts after back-to-back victories in November and December at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba and Hero World Challenge, and could move him up to third in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Bland joined him in the clubhouse with a birdie-birdie finish of his own in a 68, with two-time champion Rory McIlroy finding water on the last to fall out of the play-off. Hovland made a two-putt birdie on the first trip back up the 18th and when Bland failed to get up and down after finding a tricky lie with his second, it was the 24-year-old who was left holding the trophy at Emirates Golf Club. McIlroy signed for a 71 to finish at 11 under, three shots clear of South African pair Justin Harding and Erik van Rooyen, English duo Tyrrell Hatton and Sam Horsfield and Pole Adrian Meronk.

“This is pretty wild. I didn’t really think this was possible going in today,” said Hovland, who started the day six shots off the lead. “I knew I had to shoot a really low number but a lot of things had to go my way and I’m thankful that they did. “I’m pumping right now. It’s a little bit surreal and it’s hard to kind of calm yourself a little bit but you’ve just got to rely on all the shots that you hit and just go back to what you know. “I was fuming after the three-putt on 15 and thought that was it and I knew I just had to try to finish off well and get a nice position for the week. I rolled a really long one on 16 and then on 17 and, hey, we got a shot.”

McIlroy found sand off the tee for a bogey at the first and while he was in the waste area down the right off the sixth tee, he managed to find the green and hole from 18 feet. The Northern Irishman then made a 29-footer on the next to join the lead as Bland made a big move around the turn. The Englishman had bogeyed the sixth but he holed a chip on the ninth, made an up-and-down from the sand on the tenth and then holed from the sand on the next for a hat-trick of gains to catapult himself within one. McIlroy holed a clutch putt for bogey on the tenth after taking a drop in the waste area but hit back from 24 feet on the next and led alone as overnight leader Harding found sand twice, played a second poor bunker shot and then failed to get up and down in racking up a triple-bogey. He would soon have company, however, as Hovland picked up four shots in his last three holes to surge up the leaderboard. He had put an approach to six feet at the first and made a two-putt birdie on the par-five third but bogeyed the fourth before hitting a smart approach into the next and holing a 25-footer on the eighth to turn in 32. His chances looked to have gone when he three-putted the 15th but he holed from 35 feet on the next and then drove the 17th and made a 33-footer for eagle to tie the lead. McIlroy played a poor second on the 13th but got up and down from the bank for a birdie to edge back ahead, with Hovland completing a two-putt birdie on the par-five last to join him and set the target. Bland was not done yet, however, and after getting up and down for par on the 15th and 16th, he did it again for birdie on the 17th and 18th. McIlroy needed a birdie over the gettable final two holes but he had to make a remarkable par from the bushes at the 17th and found water on the last for a bogey that sent Bland and Hovland back up the last. Harding signed for a closing 76, Meronk - who had also held the lead in the early stages of day four - carded a 72 which was matched by Hatton, Van Rooyen finished with a 73 and Horsfield recorded a 67.

AGRONOMY UPDATE

W

Dear Members,

ell, what a whirlwind start to the year for the Golf Course Maintenance department. The Slync.io Desert Classic was something we were all looking forward to as it was a new elevated tournament and we got to show off the work we did to the Majlis greens last summer. There was a little bit of nervousness going into the tournament as we all know the greens are still very young and still finding our way on how much we could push them to get speed. Well, it was safe to say they did exceptionally well. Most days during the tournament week was a single cut and a single roll which shows how consistent they were. The rolled great and we had some great comments from players and organizers which was nice to hear. Below is the last day stimp readings so you can see how consistent we were. This table is done every morning so we could see if any greens needed a bit extra work or if we needed to back off. HOLE PPG 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

CUT/ROLL SC + SR SC + SR SC + SR SC + SR SC + SR SC + SR SC + SR SC + SR SC + SR SC + SR

STIMP HOLE CUT/ROLL 12.9 12.9 10 SC + SR 12.7 11 SC + SR 12.8 12 SC + SR 12.8 13 DC + SR 12.7 14 DC + SR 12.8 15 SC + SR 12.8 16 SC + SR 12.7 17 SC + SR 12.8 18 SC + SR

and they really settled in with the team very well. Thanks also to our Dubai Golf Interns who have been working with us since October and now experienced 4 professional events across our clubs. The course has bounced back very well since the tournament has finished and the greens are doing well. There are a few areas that had some shade issues and high traffic areas but we are confident that once warmer temperatures return these will recover nicely.

STIMP 12.9 12.8 12.7 12.8 12.8 12.8 12.8 12.7 12.7

SC = Single Cut DC = Double Cut SR = Single Roll It was great to have the team at the presentation this year and Viktor Hovland our winner was very engaging and complemented the team on the course condition. Would like to also thank the team for their hard work during the lead up to the tournament, they really raised the bar. We were also grateful for 3 volunteers coming over for 2 weeks from Gleneagles Golf Club. They loved there time here and said it was an experience of a lifetime. It’s great to support greenkeepers starting their careers

Tropical Signal Grass removal has started on the Faldo course as this is something we want to eradicate as much as we can this year. The spraying of this broad leaf grass is something we have not done on Faldo before as it does kill the paspalum. We plan to spray it 3 times so that it’s fully eliminated and then sprig with new grass so that we have a purer grass golf course and not a mix. There will be some brown areas around the course, but this action is only a positive to get the course in better condition over the long term. It’s been great having the new carts on the courses and with them being Lithium they are much more ecofriendly and lighter which is great for wear on the course. There has been an issue with them being much nimbler and that is they can damage the turf if sharp turns happen at speed. Please can we keep that in mind when out on the course so we can protect the grass from damage as you would not want to have your ball in a ripped turf mark when playing.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all then members for their support over the last 2 months. We did have some testing few weeks and appreciated members who reached out to us and showed amazing compassion towards the Golf Course Maintenance department. Happy golfing and enjoy the rest of the season. Matthew Perry Golf Course Superintendent

RECREATION UPDATE Dear Members,

F

I hope that this update finds you well & healthy. irstly, it was amazing to be a part of another fantastic Dubai Desert Classic, which I and many others have said was without doubt the biggest and best yet! A huge congratulations to all involved in the planning and delivery of the event, and to another tremendous winner, Viktor Hovland. Having the opportunity to see these players at the highest level up close and personal in the gym is a highlight of the week for me, and many of you are always surprised with my stories of what they get up too and how they train both in the lead up to the tournament, and during! The players regularly comment on how good the facilities are and that Fit Lab is one of the best gym’s they see on tour, so that is of great satisfaction to hear. Hopefully Rory returns next year, but if he could tee off later that would be great as opening the gym at 5am for him on the Thursday was a lot tougher for me than his workout was for him! Since the SDDC, the leisure facilities have really thrived, and many of you are using the great weather to get your fitness regimes in good order which is great to see. Looking forward, we have our Zumba and Yoga classes weekly for you to sign up to and enjoy, and we are now offering Karate sessions for all ages so please come visit us and ask should you be interested.

Our Full Moon Yoga classes are proving very popular as well as Padel Tennis, which continues to grow. We have now added 2 more courts, this time at the Dusit Thani hotel on SZR, so if you are down that way be sure to book and play a game on the rooftop with views of Burj Khalifa and DIFC. STEPHEN HUBNER

JUMEIRAH GOLF ESTATES DIRECTOR OF GOLF

Dear Valued Members,

ETIQUETTE DRIVE

I hope you are well and enjoying your golf during this beautiful winter weather.

To help improve the on-course etiquette and in turn the experience for our members, we recently announced that the Club will be recording all etiquette breaches made by members. Our Marshals have been doing a super job informing offending members on the course of breaches they see and reporting these to the Golf Office each day. In the first month there have been over 100 member breaches! While this number is alarmingly high, the positive is that members are being reminded of the importance of etiquette so that they can avoid future occurrences.

I

t has been a very busy start to the year here at Jumeirah Golf Estates and it has been wonderful to see so many of our members playing regularly and competing in our many club competitions.

Our wonderful team of colleagues are fully committed to improving the member experience here at the Club and below is a brief update on what is currently being done to achieve this. As always, any questions or feedback is welcome and you can reach me at shubner@dubaigolf.com.

Offending members are receiving warning letters from the Club outlining the breach with a reminder of the importance of respecting other golfers by ensuring etiquette guidelines are followed. If a member is found to have had a second breach in a 12-month period, then a 7-day playing ban will be issued. Thankfully this has not happened so far. To assist members in successfully carrying out their etiquette obligations, we have recently added additional rakes to large bunkers and added sand bottle fixings to trolleys for walking golfers. In addition, our Starters are giving a more thorough brief and we are happy to report that all these small changes are certainly helping. Thank you for your support with this.

TEE TIME AVAILABILITY

NEW MEMBER BAG TAGS

Dubai’s golf courses continue to be extremely busy due to a combination of members wanting to play more golf, local visitors having more time to play, and of course the return of tourists in large numbers.

Please ensure that you pass by the Membership Desk to collect your lovely new JGE Member Bag Tag. It comes in a nice handy pouch and with a new up-to-date Member Rules & Regulations booklet which I am sure you will find useful.

To maximize availability for members, we have further reduced the options for visitors to play golf on the Earth and Fire courses. In addition, there have been recent changes in the member booking and cancelation policy which is helping. Removing the ability for single members to book multiple consecutive 4balls is meaning the tee sheet fills up slower, and the longer tiered cancelation policy is resulting in members releasing unwanted slots sooner so they can be taken by others. This is a gradual process, but the signs are there that we are moving in the right direction, and I thank all members for their understanding regarding the recent changes.

MEMBER SURVEY We were delighted that so many members completed the annual survey and that a large percentage of you took the extra time to provide detailed feedback. This is extremely helpful for the management team and provides a roadmap to improvement. We are finalizing the analysis and action plan and will share this with all members soon to show that we are listening, that we care and that we will improve with your help and support.

VIGGO SØRENSEN We were immensely sad to hear the news of our Junior Member, Viggo Sørensen, passing away in late January. I would like to thank our members who attended the tribute evening here at Jumeirah Golf Estates Clubhouse Ballroom on Sunday 6th February. Also, thanks to all who sent such lovely messages of support to Viggo’s loving parents Thomas and Nathalie. They were overwhelmed with all that the Club did to support during such a difficult time. Viggo was extremely well regarded within the Club and the golfing community in the UAE. As a member and golf academy student, our team are extremely proud of all his contributions both on and off the course. He was incredibly talented and committed to the game, but most importantly Viggo was a lovely young chap and will be remembered fondly by us all. Thank you once again for all your support of our wonderful Club and for taking the time to read this update. I look forward to seeing you soon.

We are now into a new golfing year with the Aviv Dubai Championship and DP World Championship tour events behind us and have seen great interest from visitors wanting to play our Championship courses. It never ceases to amaze me the incredible level of enthusiasm around the golfing world the DP World Championship event generates in our courses. This year has been no exception.

T

Dear Members,

he new year has also seen a significant percentage of our membership renewing their memberships which is excellent, together with a constant flow of new members joining JGE. It’s evident from listening to new members playing in my Tuesday Captain’s morning that the overall package of two world class golf courses together with a fantastic club atmosphere continues to be a draw. I look forward to meeting and playing with as many of our new members as possible over coming months. Our calendar of events has been incredibly busy in both January and February and it has been great to see so many of our members participating each weekend. JGE recently hosted the UAE pro-am event which saw a large field participating. A big thanks goes to AHR Group

whose sponsorship helped make it a really special day for all involved. We welcome their continued involvement in the event. We have our Club Championships coming up in March and not only am I looking forward to defending my Seniors title, but also to seeing as full a field of members as possible. I recently met with our course superintendent Stuart Horwood to discuss his plans for our courses this year. Both courses are generally in good health with both the greens and fairways playing well. We do have some issues with the weed named Tropical Signal Grass to deal with, particularly on the Fire course, so it was comforting to hear Stuart’s plans to address this over coming months. I had a catch up with our scratch team recently and it was good to hear how well they are doing. I will be looking to support them as much as possible this year both home and away and would encourage our membership to get behind them as best they can. If you are interested in understanding more, Steff Jones will be able to provide you with a schedule of events for the team. Similarly, our Ladies are performing well in the ICC so congratulations to Sheila and the team for flying the JGE flag so well. In the last edition of Club Life I talked about our etiquette drive and since then it has been good to see that our Marshals are identifying etiquette transgressions on the courses with those members identified being notified. This is a great initiative and one I fully support. As a membership we really need to keep course etiquette front of mind and really look after our courses for the benefit of all. Enjoy your golf all and see you on the courses soon. Regards Steve

JUMEIRAH GOLF ESTATES LADY CAPTAIN

The New Year kicked off with the usual enthusiasm and energy that surrounds our ladies on a Wednesday morning. A pairs scramble eased us back into the swing of things. With cooler weather, great playing conditions on Earth and friendly faces, it was the perfect start to 2022. Dear Members,

T

he Lounge Spa individual stableford winner was Evelyn Downham and collecting the Park Hyatt prizes for our Betterball competition were Anna Abbott & Shuang Sha.

January saw us participating in our first ICC event, massive congratulations to our JGE Ladies team, who as hosts used local knowledge wisely to secure the coveted points. Anna Abbott dominated from the 1st hole and was the overall individual winner on the day closely followed by the ever-reliable Mitsuko Emmerson.

L AD Y

February started with a Coffee Morning with a different twist. Thanks to the encouragement and hard work of our Teaching Professionals at the Peter Cowen Academy, who helped organize the new ladies join our more established group for a relaxed 9 hole scramble. The unusually strong winds on Fire certainly didn’t spoil their introduction to golf and a very enjoyable morning was finished off by prize giving at the Sports Bar. Anneke Strobach & Joe O’Connor presented the winning prizes to Philippa Stumbles, Sara Chadwick, Stella Athanas and Biljan Toft. We look forward to inviting more ladies from PCAD to join us in April. Our Lounge Spa individual stableford winner for February was Claudia Kilcullen, also worth mentioning was Gill Stevens in 2nd place with Lorraine Martensson hitting a superb shot to win NTP at hole 8. Wednesday 16th February is a date that our member Jacqui De Vries will not forget. Playing in the AHR Pro-Am she secured her 1st hole-in-one at the 2nd on Fire. Wednesday the 23rd will see our ICC team travel to Saadiyat and then onto Emirates Faldo Course on the 9th March. With fingers crossed I look forward to updating you all in our next edition of Club Life. Looking forward to seeing you out on the golf course soon. Sheila McIlroy Lady Captain

TOURNAMENTS UPDATE The last couple of months have seen us host our Men’s Amateur Open, Junior Open and Ladies Amateur Opens, along with several fun and friendly team events. The action won’t stop there as we look forward to continuing with a busy tournament schedule for March and April with our inaugural Generations Day being played on Sunday 6th March and of course our 2022 Club Championship being played on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th March.

W

hat a fantastic start 2022 has had with an incredibly busy tournament calendar. The club has hosted over 17 events for both members and guests to enjoy over January and February.

All competitions available to enter are on VIYA, please make sure to click on the Tournament tab to browse and enter the events.

TOURNAMENT REGISTRATION We endeavor to ensure all requests are catered for when members are entering themselves and friends to play in club competitions, however we are facing issues when a member enters a regular playing partner into the event without informing them of their entry. This can result in the club sharing inaccurate draws and often can cause members to be charged late cancellation fees when cancelling their tee times. To avoid such issues the member who registered the entry will be responsible for any no shows as is operated in the normal non tournament tee time policy.

It was a dramatic finish with Shuang scoring four points on the last hole to see the pair win on a card playoff against Willemijn Roeterdink and Mitsuko Emmerson. JUMEIRAH GOLF ESTATES PRO-AM

16-17/02/22

BY AHR GROUP

T

he ever-popular Jumeirah Golf Estates Pro-Am by AHR Group was played on Wednesday 16th February on the Fire Course with the second day of play being held on Thursday 17th February over the Earth Course. The fun and exciting two-day event saw 25 teams of 4 competing in a friendly best two net scores from four format. In addition to this we had 26 UAE PGA Professionals playing in far more serious 36-hole Strokeplay tournament. The weather was beautiful for both days, however the course was playing rather difficult with the club deciding to offer the Sunday pin positions of The AVIV Dubai Championship for day 1 on the Fire Course and the 2021 DP World Tour Championship over the Earth Course.

Team Results The winners of the team event were the team lead by professional, Cian Hurley of Emirates Golf Club, Shames Al Hashemi, Yousuf Al Hashimi and Mohamed Abdulla who scored an impressive 29 under for both days! In runners up spot with a combined score of 27 under, led by Professional Jules Lompech of Abu Dhabi Golf Club, Wael Soliman and Moustafa Shahin. An incredible effort for three players to score so well in a team event. In third place, with a score of 24 under par were the team lead by Louis Gaughan of ProSports International, Marc Beattie, Aaron Jones, and Liam Kivlin. In fourth with a score of 19 under, needing a card playoff was professional Matt Rice and his team of Gurbax Singh, Satnam Kaur and Rachida Nasser. In fifth place, again, on 19 under par was Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club Teaching Professional Matthew Brookes, and his team Tony Brookes, Aditya Ganti and Haiyan Mujarkech. Richard Cuddihy hit a tremendous shot into the 17th hole where there was a Nearest the Pin competition, Richard narrowly missed out on driving home in a brand-new BMW that was generously sponsored as a hole in one prize by BMW, AGMC. One very notable point is a huge congratulations to Jumeirah Golf Estates member Jacqueline De Vries on making a stunning hole in one on the eighth hole of the Fire Course during the first round.

Professional Event The scoring in the professional division was excellent considering the difficult pin positions that were in play. Steven Munro of ProSports International and Luke Plumb of Jebel Ali Resort finished round one tied at the top after posting scores of 71

(-1). One shot behind on level par were Oscar Yeomans of Jumeirah Golf Estates and Louis Gaughan of ProSports International.

“Congratulations to all the winners on their fantastic performance over the two days. It’s a pleasure for us to host such an event at Jumeirah Golf Estates, however we must thank both the amateurs and the professionals for their continued support. Last year was the first two day pro-am we hosted at Jumeirah Golf Estates, we are trying to build the event to be known as the event ‘to not be missed on both amateur and professional schedules’, a huge thanks must go to the event partners, BMW AGMC, African + Eastern who allowed us to offer hole in one prize, along with some refreshments during and after the golf. Lastly a massive thank you to our main event sponsors AHR Group whose contribution allowed us to really elevate the event to the next level and were extremely generous in adding additional funds to the professional prize pot which allowed us to hand over 10,000AED to the winning professional”. Stephen Hubner, Director of Golf

The lead changed hands several times during the second round, with Oscar double bogeying the first. However, with three birdies he managed to make the turn in level par, home advantage helped Oscar pull through during the closing stretches of the round, and a fine birdie on the difficult 18th hole secured Oscar a 71 (-1) second round and confirmed a four-shot win in the event. Oscar a rather new professional to the region, has already secured himself as one of the leading UAE PGA players with two wins in his first two starts. Three players finished tied for second place, Matt Rice, Steven Munro, and Matthew Brookes finished the tournament with an overall score of 147, 3 over par. Matt Rice and Matthew Brookes had two similar days both shooting a 73 & 74, whereas Steven shot a 71 & 76.

AGRONOMY UPDATE

O Dear Members,

ver the past two months we have continued the landscape upgrades on the golf courses. I’m sure you’re enjoying the ease of finding those stray tee shots on some holes as well as the improved presentation. This will continue with a longterm vision of completing all areas of the course.

General etiquette has improved recently but we can always do better with bunker raking and pitchmark repairing. After speaking with Steve Drake our Captain at JGE there was some general improvements that were not so obvious, like picking up your broken tees and leaving them in the golf buggy or ensuring the sand is level after filling a divot. Leveling divots correctly helps the turf recover quicker.

In the rough areas you may see different shades of green. We are consciously encouraging an early transition from the rye grass back to Bermuda this year. The main reason is to have a longer window of control for the tropical signal grass weeds as well as better grass coverage going into winter. The photo shows the light green Bermuda grass and the dark green rye grass.

We have now finalized a summer plan for the reduction of weed grasses on both courses. This has been presented to the committee who are aware of the approach we will take as well as the impact this will have from April - September to the golf courses. Best Regards, Stuart Horwood

DUBAI CREEK CLUB OPERATIONS MANAGER Wow - where have the first few months of 2022 gone?

It’s been an extremely busy start to the new year, with our flagship tournaments (Club Championship, Men’s Open and Ladies Open) taking place, the welcoming of our new Club Captains (Max, Beatrice and Rohit) at the wet and blustery Captains Drive In, the formation of our new MCC (Members Consultative Committee) as well as the first meeting, we also hosted a ‘new member integration event’ in February that welcomed 20 of our newest members to play golf and get to meet other new members, and then there was the planning of our upcoming Annual Members Party, which by the time you will be reading this, we would have already celebrated the 29th Anniversary of the Club – in true Dubai Creek style I might add!

A

side from these landmark events, we’ve had our brand new EZGO golf cart fleet arrive, all fitted with state of the art GPS system, a number of new colleagues commenced their careers with us and we also said an emotional goodbye to Vivian Veljovic who in her short 5-month internship with us, had become an integral cog in our wheel, and did an incredible job of looking after our members and guests. Another notable re-appointment who many of you will know, is Romana Fernandes as our Events Manager. Romana has been working

at Dubai Creek for almost 20 years, and after a 2 year spell supporting the Park Hyatt Dubai events operation, she is now back with the golf club team, managing a whole range of events such as social parties, team building and trainings, to corporate dinners, award nights and much more. If you are thinking of hosting an event no matter how small or large, and you’re looking for a venue with incredible views of the city, then please do reach out to Romana who is the ultimate events professional. Continuing along the events theme, in February we had cause to celebrate another great occasion - the marriage of David Taggart, our Golf Course Superintendent, to his beautiful bride – Ash. I’d like you to join with me in wishing them both all the very best as they begin their wedded life together. Over the next few months myself and the team will be looking ahead to the continued planning and delivery of some operational improvements, such as the introduction of some new food and wine items at Lakeview, as well as a freshen up of Lakeview’s inside décor. We will be focused on improving the on-course food and beverage offering, including how we service golfers across the course. Then there is the expansion of Jones The Grocer from an ‘Express’ to a full service offering, as well as the delivery of a new restaurant concept into the first floor of the clubhouse, called ‘Onze’ – a very unique Peruvian/Japanese concept, that will have indoor and outdoor lounge seating, indoor and outdoor bar element, with a strong emphasis on great food, cocktails and entertainment. From a golf perspective, as we near the end of the winter season, our first year of not over-seeding the golf course has gone exceptionally well and the course has held up beyond expectations. The benefit will soon be clear, as we will no longer suffer a 2-3 month ‘transition’ period where the winter grass dies off and we struggle to revive a dormant Bermuda grass, that leaves large and unsightly bare patches of earth in its place. Without transition our Bermuda grass will have a full summer to further mature and we will enter our next winter season in incredible shape and the course in top condition. As you can see there is plenty to look forward to and we look forward to sharing further updates in due course. M E SSAGE

Fellow Members,

022 has kicked-off at high speed with a number of key events early in the year. This commenced in early January with the Dubai Creek Mens Open, which was won in great fashion by Yash Majmudar (JGE) scoring -4 over 36 holes and seeing off local star Josh Hill (Trump) by a single shot. Remarkably Yash achieved this with an unusual putting technique using only one hand to grip the putter! Dubai experienced heavy January rainfall the following week, which continued for the Captains Drive-In. Sincere thanks to those of you who braved the wind and rain to support myself and Beatrice on the first tee. Congratulations to Bayhaan Lakdawala who made it a three-peat of Mens Club Championships in February, and congratulations to all other winners at this premier club event. The first MCC meeting of 2022 was also held in February and I was pleased to be joined by a diverse group of members, who are keen raise their ideas and constructive points to the club management on behalf of the membership. I foresee the MCC being an excellent engagement mechanism for the members in 2022 and recommend you speak to an MCC member for any particular issues or queries to raise.

Dear Members, ith winter coming to an end, I have to say that after two years of the pandemic we have had a great start to the year - full of important competitions including the Men’s Open, first medal with Captain’s Drive In, Club Championship and Ladies Amateur Open.

I would like to wish a big congratulations to our fantastic ICC team, who won the second day out of three in her league against Els club and Yas Links. On the 9th of March there will be the third and last day of the league at the Yas Links and the Creek Course, which our ladies are well prepared for and are still currently in first place following these two victories.

Teeing off the new year with the Captain’s Drive In was a great honour. I must admit that the stormy weather threw me off and I was sure of hitting an air shot! Thank you for all your support for myself and Max, it is greatly appreciated.

In February we had our biggest competition of the year - the Club Championship. Congratulations to the junior Anca Mirela Matieu for winning the gross, and to our super Vice Ladies Captain Shiba Wahid for winning the net and for her outstanding first day. On the third week of February the Club hosted the Ladies Amateur Open and I am very proud to announce that the winner was our young junior Hannah Alan! A long-time member here and daughter of our Ex-Ladies Captain, Glory Xavier. Hannah shot an incredible 69 gross and went to the play off to secure the win. Congratulations to her mum for winning the net in the same day. With such a great start to the year, I am hoping for a continued year of success like these first two months and am looking forward to celebrating during the Member’s Party. work. It’s never easy to let go of members and I have always found that part of the process to be the hardest. We as always wish them the very best of luck and we do hope they will return to visit us on their future trips out to our beautiful city.

NEW MEMBER EVENING On 15th February we hosted another New Member Event with the purpose of helping our new members to better integrate at the club, by meeting the club’s management team, Club Captains and some of our MCC members. Of course, most importantly we hope that they meet some lifelong golfing buddies to share their time with at the club! It was a really fun event with 20 new members playing nine holes, followed by a prize giving and refreshments at Lakeview Terrace. We look forward to hosting the next new member event in May.

MEMBER REFERRAL PROGRAM I want to personally thank all those members that have introduced their friends, colleagues and acquaintances over the last few months. The member referral program has been exceptionally successful and it’s a great way of building on our community of friendly and loyal members. As a reminder, the following incentives will be paid as credit onto account, to both the new member and the referring member: - AED 1,500 all Full Golf (7 Day) membership categories - AED 1,000 for Young Professional & Midweek membership categories Once again, thank you all for your support and if any assistance related to membership, please feel free to contact me, and I will be delighted as always!

TOURNAMENTS UPDATE Dear Members,

A

I hope you are all well and enjoying your membership! s always, it’s important you remain updated on what’s happening here at Dubai Creek with regards to golf, below are a handful of updates I hope you will find of interest.

TEE TIME AVAILABILITY We are delighted to see so many of our members taking full advantage of their membership here at Dubai Creek, many of you enjoying multiple rounds a week which is fantastic!

In light of this new booking behavior, I am delighted to confirm that we have reduced the number of tee times available to guests and extended the timings reserved for members only.

ON COURSE ETIQUETTE DRIVE Similar to our sister clubs, Emirates Golf Club & Jumeirah Golf Estates, we too will be introducing an on course etiquette drive to remind our members to take appropriate care of their golf course Moving forward our on course marshal team will be informing myself of any etiquette breaches, after which a formal written warning will be sent to any member at fault. Thank you for your support in advance on the above as we continue to strive to provide the best possible playing conditions for members and guests.

EMPLOYEE OF THE QUARTER I am delighted to announce that Benedict Pasia, our Bag Drop Supervisor, has recently been awarded the Front of House Employee of the Quarter here at the resort! A fantastic achievement for Benedict who over the past few years really has become an integral part of our team. 022 kicked off in usual fashion with the eagerly anticipated, OMEGA Dubai Creek Men’s Amateur Open. As always, we had a huge field of 105, 35 of which were plus handicaps and many had flown in from abroad. With rounds of 67 & 71 for a -4 total, our 2022 champion was Yash Majmudar – congratulations Yash!

HANDICAPS

Our OMA Emirates Monthly Medal winner in January was Miki Mirza and in February was Anish Bhatia. In our Ladies Monthly Medal by Park Hyatt Dubai, getting off to a flying start was Janet Kim who won both the January & February edition of the event! On Saturday 22nd January, we had our inaugural Invitation Day – the idea centred around members inviting their friends to experience the famous Creek hospitality. After a fantastic round of 44 points in this betterball format, our winners were JP Fitzgerald & Keith Sbarbaro. The Autumn Cup finally culminated over a fearsome tussle between Mark Dupree and Shiba Wahid. After an incredibly good match, Shiba prevailed to claim the inaugural Autumn Cup. Over the first weekend in February we hosted our Club Championships – a highlight in the calendar as we seek to find the best Man, Lady, and Junior golfer at the club. Our 2022 champions are as follows: Juniors: Raghav Gulati, Ladies: Anca Mirela Mateiu, Men’s Net: Harry Chandler, and Men’s Overall: Bayhaan Lakdawala (for the third time in a row!)

Whilst I have you, I wanted to draw your attention to the huge strides our Junior Elite Team are making following their new dedicated training and tournament schedule, generously supported by Abdullah Al Naboodah. As you can see from the below, all juniors in the team have reduced their handicap, some by as much as 8.1 shots across the year! Incredible stuff from some certain future stars. OMEGA DUBAI CREEK MEN’S AMATEUR OPEN 2022

8-9/01/22

his weekend saw Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club host the annual Omega Dubai Creek Men’s Amateur Open, a highlight in the golfing calendar with golfers travelling from far and wide to test themselves on the famously difficult Championship Course. The course was made increasingly tough for these competitors over the course of the two days, with tees pushed back and pins tucked away, the back nine on Sunday saw a close and thrilling finale.

“As always it is a huge pleasure to host this event, and we enjoy seeing the golf course hold its own against some seriously good golf. We wanted the course to become an increasing challenge as the two rounds reached their conclusion and so it was fantastic to see this come to fruition. As always, I would like to thank our incredibly supportive sponsors Omega, would continue to donate such wonderful prizes. Congratulations to all of our winners and we look forward to welcoming you all back next year!” Thomas Hall, Assistant Golf Services Manager Held over two days, there were many prizes up for grabs. Winning best net on day one with a score of -3, (68) was Takashi Suzuno and winning best gross was Sam Mullane (-1, 70). At curtains on day one, the leaderboard was primed for a compelling final round of golf with the leaders packed tightly at the top. Yash Majmudar led the way after a superb 67 (-4), followed by Josh Hill and Sam Mullane, both also shooting under par with rounds of 70 (-1). After a gripping final stretch both of our leaders found the water on the treacherous 18th hole. Yash Majmudar was able to make an exceptional up and down however to save his bogey. That was enough to secure the narrowest of victories over Josh Hill and crown him the 2022 Omega Dubai Creek Men’s Amateur Open champion with scores of 67, 71 for a total of 138 (-4) for the tournament. Behind Yash, the field remained tightly packed with Josh Hill, as mentioned, in second (139, +3), Ahmad Skaik and Miki Mirza tied for third (145, +3) and Oliver Mukherjee in fifth (146, +4). Congratulations to Yash for a brilliant performance over the two days!

Yash Majmudar

The overall net prize was won by Vedant Pal with a score of 140 (-2). In second place in the net category was Imran Qayyum (142, E) and Alistair Hess (142, +2) was in third. The best net score of day two was Harry Chandler with a 1 under 70, and best gross on day two was Dan Byrne (72, +1).

DUBAI CREEK CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2022 MEN’S, LADIES & JUNIORS

12 & 13/02/22

T

Shiba Wahid fired a fantastic first round 62 to propel herself to the top of the Ladies Net leader board and followed that up with a 74, finishing at -7, claiming victory in this division. Janet Kim was the ladies net runner up at +2.

In the junior division, last year’s captain Raghav Gulati made a very strong start, firing an opening round 69 (-2) to give himself a 6 shot lead over Nikhil Bhatia as they headed into day 2. Nikhil fought back brilliantly and joined Raghav for a share of the lead midway through the second round. Raghav was able to finish brilliantly, however. With three birdies down the closing stretch, he finished at +5 for the tournament, beating Nikhil by 8, and successfully defending his Junior Club Championship title.

Miki Mirza was awarded best gross on day 1, shooting a great round of 75 (+4). With greens becoming increasingly fast and winds picking up Liam Wealleans was able to take best gross on day two with a fantastic 74 (+3). Best net on day 1 was won by Josh Kemp with a level par 71 and Jaime Gorman shot an equally solid level par to take the day 2 prize.

Vihaan Sharma was our boy’s net champion finishing at +11. He beat Wenji Li by two strokes. Winning the girls net prize was Hannah Allen with two great rounds of 77.

Finishing second in the Men’s Vase (net) competition was Shankar Balasubramanian, after rounds of 76 and 73 leaving him at +7 for the competition. He lost by two strokes to Harry Chandler who fired brilliant rounds of 70 and 77.

he Dubai Creek Club Championships saw all representatives of the club coming together in one weekend for the third time, to compete for the men’s, ladies and junior prizes. Conditions became increasingly difficult as the weekend progressed but all three divisions were fought for brilliantly and eventually three worthy winners were crowned victorious.

Anca Mirela Mateiu emerged victorious and became our new Ladies Club Champion for 2022 after rounds of 82 and 79. She beat Glory Xavier by two shots after a hard fought closing nine holes.

In the Men’s Division, we awarded prizes to the best gross and net scores over each day.

For the third year in a row, one competitor was a cut above the rest in this tournament. He began with a flawless 67 (-4) to open up a five shot lead heading into the final round. As the conditions worsened however, other competitors fought back. Obediah Ayton increasingly grew into the competition and he followed up an opening 78 with a superb 73 to get himself into third place. Nathan Seldon was in solo second after round 1 and his second round of 78 saw him stay just there. However, it was Bayhaan Lakdawala who went wire to wire and defended his title for the second time in three years. He followed up that 67 with a second round 75 to win in convincing style and confirm himself as Dubai Creek Club Champion once again.

“As always, this weekend is a fantastic opportunity to see all sections of the club represented and we’ve seen some fantastic and hard fought golf over the last two days. Thank you all for playing! Congratulations to all of our winners and to Bayhaan, a worthy champion.” Michael Major, Director Of Golf

AGRONOMY UPDATE As others have touched on it has been great to see the club as busy as it has been over the winter. Despite all the extra traffic the golf course has held up remarkably well. We were especially happy to see the course provide a good test for the Men’s Open and Club Championship, congratulations to all our champions!

L

This March Siemens will be planting a further 100 trees, the majority of which will be to the left of the 7th fairway. We also hope to install a pilot beehive project on property to encourage bee populations and pollination.

CART PATH EXPANSION A busy tee sheet means more carts on the course. To free up traffic flow and to reduce wear on the grass we have begun expanding some cart paths. We will continue throughout this year and into next year, expanding larger sections where feasible and installing laybys in other areas to give more room to pass.

ast year our focus was to eradicate the weed infestation, improve the health and firmness of the greens and to improve the condition of the tees. We still have work to do but we are happy with the progress we have made. This year we will look to cement that progress whilst also driving progress in other areas. Firstly, improving the quality of the playing conditions for larger parts of the year and secondly making the golf course stronger and more resilient to all the golf that is now being played across the country.

Left: 17th Green Surround April ‘21 Right: 17th Green Surround Feb ‘22

TRANSITION AND OVERSEED This year there will be no ‘Transition’. Previously, bare areas in rough that occurred when the winter grass died had persisted throughout the summer, occasionally stretching to overseed in late Autumn. I would like to thank my team for the incredible effort they put forward to repair these same bare areas last summer. When coupled with the Tee Reconstruction project, it was one of the longest summers I have worked. We can now spray chemicals to keep the weeds at bay as well as improve the playability of the bunkers and greens. At times when typically the golf course has been at its weakest we will now be going from strength to strength.

TREE PLANTING WITH GOUMBOOK Late last year we partnered with Goumbook a local charity that promotes the establishment of Ghaf trees in the UAE. They engaged DP World who sent a delegation to plant 50 trees in November last year. The majority of which were planted left of the 10th fairway.

STAFF PROFILE

HARRY WELLS

ASSISTANT GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT How long have you been at Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club? I joined here in March 2021 following an Internship at Jumeriah Golf Estates. Where were you before you got to the UAE and what got you into Greenkeeping? My dad has been a Superintendent his whole career and is currently head man at South Herts Golf Club. I got started working for him before travelling to Oz and working at Royal Sydney. After that I went to the US. Firstly at Liberty National home of the Northern Trust FedEx Cup Playoff and then most recently at LA Country Club which will host the US Open in 2023. What was your biggest takeaway from your time in the US? The day to day expectations and the resources put into private golf courses in the US is just on a level that is unmatched anywhere else, LA Country Club could host the US Open any week of the year. Being exposed to the highest possible standards means you know what you have to aspire to. Hobbies/Interests? All sport, especially England Cricket and Arsenal FC but unfortunately neither are in fine form at the moment. My golf is a work in progress but I am playing a lot more since moving to Dubai. n store this march we have the much awaited Tileist SM9 wedge from master wedge maker Bob Vokey, trusted by the best in the word such as Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth and Patrick Cantlay, but also the most used wedge on every tour by un-contracted players who choose to play the best.

Vokey offers the most diverse range of lofts and grinds amongst all other brands with 6 different grind options. F, S, M, K, L and D –allow golfers of all skill levels to be precisely fit for their swing type (steep, neutral, shallow), shot making style (sweeper, digger) and course conditions (firm, neutral, soft).

The new design maintains the innovative forward CG to produce a solid feeling wedge that squares up at impact for more consistent results. This really will be the ultimate wedge set up to have in your golf bags this coming season! WHAT YOU SHOULD EXPECT FROM A PROPER FITTING In order to find the most bespoke fit for you as a player these are the keys in which we follow to optimize your results:

GAP FITTING. The proper lofts to gap fit from your irons to your highest lofted wedge. We recommend 4°-6° of loft separation between wedges. This results in more ‘stock’ swings, producing better results.

GRIND AND BOUNCE FITTING. Once the gap fitting is complete, hit all the grinds within the prescribed loft side by side with a focus on swing type (Digger/Sweeper) and course condition (Firm/Soft). This first bounce and grind test is for full swings. GREENSIDE FITTING. Each wedge must have a purpose, and the variety of shots required greenside (bunkers, rough, tight lies, flop shots, bump & run, etc.) creates the need for wedges that can execute multiple shots. We help you choose wedges that complement one another and are capable of unique shots from these scenarios.

PING New for march you will be receiving the Brand new Ping i525 iron range. This is the highly anticipated upgrade from the hugely popular i500 iron model. The features of the new model are a new variable face thickness which has given an increase in both launch and ball speed. 4 extra grooves on the face allows for more ball control and the increase in MOI with the new toe weight for greater accuracy. On site now at Emirates Golf Club we have full fitting kit to take your iron game to the next level.

AVAILABLE NOW We have recently taken delivery of the brand new model ranges from both Callaway and Taylormade. Callaway has given us the brand new Rogue range with 3 different head models to choose from in order to maximize your potential off the tee. We also have the new carbon head Stealth and Stealth plus range from Taylormade in store. If you feel like you could benefit with upgrades throughout your golf bag contact Graham on 058 507 7535 or email graham@prosports.ae to book your custom fit session.

ILE AUX CERFS GOLF CLUB,

MAURITIUS

T

he magnificent Ile Aux Cerfs Golf Club was designed by Bernhard Langer in association with IMG Golf Design and opened for play in 2004. Located on the stunning Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, the course is magnificently situated on its own small island, and is only accessible by a short boat ride from Pointe Maurice, which is located adjacent to the world renowned Le Touessrok resort. The par 72, championship golf course offers superb views of the surrounding Indian Ocean on almost every hole, and narrow fairways and small undulating greens place a premium on accuracy. One of the world’s most photographed golf courses, Ile Aux Cerfs offers players of all abilities a challenging and exciting test of golf. A small beautifully appointed clubhouse offers a well-stocked pro shop, locker room and restaurant. Ile Aux Cerfs Golf Club has received numerous accolades since opening, including been rated in the world’s Top 10 courses by leading UK magazine Golf World.
