‘more travellers preferring holiday homes’

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: : Nasma Luxury Stays, a division of Al Tamimi Investments, and a specialist in the executive and vacation rentals sector, has opened its portfolio to support investors and property owners seeking to maximize return on their secondary property assets. With the vacation and short-term property rental market growing substantially, Nasma Luxury Stays has redefined their business model to ensure that property owners get the maximum return on their investment, while having the flexibility to use their second home for their own purposes, and at their convenience. Dubai continues to focus on the development of the holiday homes sector, which is seen as crucial to the wider growth and diversification of the tourism sector. In early 2020, the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) updated its guidelines for the holiday homes sector to boost competition through safe and transparent operations and enhance its contribution to its wider strategy. Discussing the wider importance of the holiday homes

sector, Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, recently said holiday homes have become an integral part of Dubai’s overall tourism industry. “With changing patterns and trends, travellers are always looking for alternative means of accommodation, and this has been accelerated by the recent global pandemic. As with the entire sector and all tourism touchpoints, we have implemented new policies and procedures, along with inspections, to ensure we can meet the demand for holiday homes, and make every single individual feel safe within these properties. “As the UAE forges ahead with its vaccination drive and Dubai maintains its global leadership in reopening to international tourists, we expect to be in a position to meet the strong demand from prospective travellers as they make their holiday plans. And with events such as Expo 2020 Dubai and celebration of the UAE’s 50th anniversary coming up, holiday homes will play an important role in giving our visitors the choices they expect.” According to AirDNA, a short-term rental data and analytics provider, the industry, both in Dubai and across the wider region, is still growing, with Dubai rentals securing as much as US$220 on an average daily rate, and accounting for around 54% occupancy. This as real estate agency, Knight Frank, states that Dubai’s holiday home market accounts for 2.0% of Dubai’s total households, the highest proportion of all other key global hub cities.

Organizations give back to UAE communities Dubai, UAE: This Ramadan, several home-grown and leading local organizations have come together to support UAE communities during the holy month. Dubai-born CAFU, has teamed up with du, Ecyclex, National Food Products Company (NFPC), and Emirates Red Crescent to support blue collar workers and low-income families by providing them with iftar meals and calling cards this year.

The on-demand fuel delivery and car service that puts its customers and communities at the heart of its endeavors, has also partnered with Emirates Red Crescent to give its customers the chance to add AED 10 to their fuel delivery order which will help provide one Iftar meal delivered to low-income individuals and families so they can safely break their fast in line with Emirates Red Crescent’s social distancing guidelines, and in support of their aim to deliver 6,000 iftar meals a day. “This past year has been one that has tested us all, and kept us physically distant, often from our friends and family, but it has also brought us closer together by strengthening our support and appreciation for one another. And the same goes for organisations, particularly home-grown businesses with a passion for giving back to our communities”, said Nabra Al Busaidi, Sustainability and Community Manager at CAFU.

CAFU will be providing their pilots and crew, RTA taxi drivers and security guards within communities they deliver fuel to, with recyclable Iftar boxes supplied by Ecyclex - a UAE certified recycler, containing food supplied by NFPC, which represents popular brands such as Lacnor, Oasis and Royal Bakers, along with free calling cards provided by du, for them to connect with their families despite the challenges of the year and being separated from their loved ones. The outreach will run until the last day of Ramadan.

Sharjah Performing Arts Academy injects hope Sharjah, United Arab Emirates: Committed to providing diverse and meaningful learning opportunities to students in the Middle East, Sharjah Performing Arts Academy (SPAA) has launched its BTEC International Level 2 Certificate in Performing Arts for students aged 14 – 16. With several other schools in the UAE offering Level 3, SPAA’s BTEC Level 2 certificate, awarded by UK-based Pearson Education, is the first of its kind in the region. SPAA is providing a unique opportunity for secondary school-aged students to pursue their love of performing arts and gain a BTEC Level 2 qualification while continuing their existing studies at school. Young performers will be taught professional development and acting skills, while also providing them with an insight into a career in the performing arts industry. Diverse and flexible to suit the needs of the students, the BTEC Level 2 will be delivered after school and on weekends in the Academy’s state-of-the-art studios and theatres. There are also future opportunities for students to engage in the

course through SPAA’s BTEC partner schools, which will allow young performers to take part in the course at school as part of the school’s enrichment program. Students will experience a dynamic hands-on, practice-based learning style, and throughout the course they will work on a series of real-life scenario assignments. This immersive learning environment allows students to develop the practical knowledge and skills that employers and universities around the world look for in creative students. The BTEC International Level 2 Certificate in Performing Arts is led by Guildford School of Acting (GSA) graduate, affiliate member of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance (ISTD), and the only registered teacher of all four disciplines (Ballet, Modern, Tap and National) in the UAE, Lynne Holloway. “Offering a BTEC Level 2 at SPAA is just another way that we can provide local learning initiatives for global opportunities,” Holloway

said. “We really see this course as part of our ecosystem here at SPAA, bridging the gap and blending studies from our weekend Children and Young Performers classes through to our BA programmes. A career in performing arts is creative, fun and galvanising – it’s something that we all need right now.” Holloway leads a team of performing arts professionals who teach practical acting methods and techniques for students to develop skills in creativity and performance. After completing the course, students will be able to progress their skills further with a BTEC Level 3, as well as a BA degree in Performing Arts or related fields at SPAA, such as a BA in Musical Theatre or Production Arts. Equivalent to two IGCSE grades A-C, the BTEC course allows students with an interest in performing arts to explore the profession further and really delve into everything the industry has to offer. Admission for BTEC International Level 2 Certificate in Performing Arts is now open. For more information about the course, fees and commencement dates, please email: BTEC@spaa.ae

DINING

24th St. - the world’s street foods with a touch of class By Joshua Trias Dubai, UAE: 24th St. is a dining concept that has been a long time coming. The ambience will strike you as being in an alley with live cooking stations everywhere and mouth-watering delicacies feeding hungry eyes and excited bellies. The place gives you that feeling of being in a food row somewhere in Hong Kong or Bangkok, even Prague or Brussels – but you’re not. You’re right in the middle of Dubai, instead; 24th St. on the 24th floor of Dusit Thani along Sheikh Zayed Road to be exact. 24th St gives casual dining a whole new meaning for the gastronomically inclined: “It has a touch of class,” says Mina Hana, restaurant manager who walked as through their bestsellers as we sampled the artsy restaurant’s spread that the staff, among them Nita and Rachel, gladly served with all enthusiasm. The place is like having the world’s dining table in one cozy corner of a street. Of particular interest is the

Indian cuisine... so real you’d think you’re in Delhi. No wonder, my Indian friends have always kept asking me for a nice evening at 24th St. Here are some of the top choices that we recommend you indulge in: Galbi Gangnam-style (we went for the marinated chicken and it was heavenly!); Singapore Laksa with just enough creamy coconut milk on prawns, quail egg and tofu; the Kung Fu Kung Pao from Sichuan is a must! Top starters also include Salmon Avo-Noa Roll and the luscious Amritsari Fish & Chips. While in there, grab some orders of Tandoori Ajwain Prawns and get ready for a big surprise; dig in as well on the K-Pop Bibimpap topped by a slow braised beef brisket and poached egg, and enjoy Beirut-style mixed kebabs. Indeed, 24th St is street food with a touch of luxury. They thought of everything: The presentation is great; the taste, divine; the view, skyline. Marking my calendar for our next visit. See you there!

Zutto Suki ramen restaurant: Something’s cooking… oishii !

Zutto Suki is Japanese for “all-time favorite,” a name so apt for this dining destination that rolls out all the best Japanese cuisine has to offer. Best of all, the food is not pricey – sakto lang for the workingman! The ambience? Trendy. Cozy. Smart-casual. Chopsticks skills are a must – especially if you really want to dig in to stave off that mammoth craving. When was the last time you had Japanese, anyway? “All-time favorites” on the menu are also the bestsellers. The food is so authentic, you’d think you’re having ramen in busy Tokyo. The nice thing about Zutto Suki Ramen Restaurant is that there is no shortage of something for your next visit. Must-try on the menu include Tan Tan Men Ramen, which combines delicious ramen noodles and ground pork with a spicy, creamy broth seasoned with chili oil, peanut butter and sesame paste. Yummy! There are also the Shoyu Ramen, a soy-based Chicken soup that has a clear brown hue with a deep, rich soy sauce aroma. Also, highly recommended is the Miso Ramen (Miso Based Chicken soup). The list is endless. “We have upcoming new offers like more options for ramen and sushi,” said Kristine Elizabeth Galang, restaurant manager. “We also have set menus for lunch served from 11am to 5 pm,” she added. Set one would be a combination of Shio Ramen, Shoyu Rameb, Yakitori and unli drinks. There is also a choice of Rice Bowls – Karage, which is bite-size chicken thighs coated with tapioca flour on white rice topped with sunny-side up fried egg, served with cucumber salad, miso soup and iced tea. Or you might want to go for Katsu Rice Bowl, which is deep-fried chicken breast on white rice topped with sunny-side up and also served with cucumber dalad, miso soup and iced tea. Yakitori Rice Bowl are bite-sized chicken thighs with teriyaki sauce on whire rice with sunny-side up. Yup, served with cucumber salad, miso soup and iced tea. There is also a wide selection of maki and sushi, the most popular of which includes the Zutto Volcano Sushi – deep fried nori roll filling with ebi, crab sticks, cucumber, avocado and dressed in spicy mayo and teriyaki sauce as lava tobiko on top. So yes, to catch a whiff is definitely not good enough to tell a story of your dining experience. Visit the place and indulge. Chef Renato Relucio does not disappoint.

Dubai’s hospitality is on the rebound, top hotelier says Dubai Vibes News Team

‘We noticed from September-October that the occupancy increased dramatically. So, we enjoyed 70% occupancy rates in November, December, January and February.’ -- Colin Baker, StayWell Holdings regional director for the Middle East and general manager of Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel Dubai’s hospitality sector is showing progress when it comes to attracting visitors, due to the government’s “very liberal view,” coupled with stringent health and safety protocols making travel to this city convenient and “very safe,” a top hotelier said. “It is definitely on the rebound,” said Colin Baker, StayWell Holdings regional director for the Middle East and general manager of Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel, speaking to Dubai Vibes Magazine in an exclusive interview. Baker said Dubai has “one of the strongest occupancies throughout the pandemic.” “The Dubai government immediately established protocols when the pandemic hit and continue to do so, thus travellers can now come here and enjoy their visit knowing the environment is safe,” Baker said. He said this has become a “demand generator for the businesses to come to Dubai.”

VOL 1 • ISSUE 3 | APRIL 2021

Baker said most Dubai hoteliers in July and August last year “thought that it would probably take at least 12 months before we would see a real rebound.” “We noticed from September-October that the occupancy increased dramatically. So, we enjoyed 70% occupancy rates in November, December, January and February, which was a very pleasing and strong rebound,” Baker said. Despite this, Baker said, nobody’s resting on their laurels. “We are hoping that things will return to pre-2019 levels or similar to 2019,” he said. “Some industry experts are saying it will go back to normal by 2023; some are saying 2024, but we are still optimistic that the industry will bounce back here in Dubai quicker than many other parts of the world,” he added. Market diversification has seemed to become the order of the day as staycation offers are rolled out

for those in the UAE, who want to experience weekend hotel stays in lieu of travels, according to Baker. Other markets are also being tapped, among them Africa, the Commonwealth of Independent States (former USSR) in Europe as well as UAE’s neighboring countries in the region. According to Dubai Tourism, the city had a total of 1.11million international guests from July to November 2020. From January to February this year, Dubai Tourism, recorded 810,200 arrivals to the city. Baker has a wealth of hospitality management experience, taking on key roles globally spanning New Zealand, Beijing, Papua New Guinea and obviously Australia before moving to Dubai in September 2017.

insights ‘I worked my way up from the bottom’

In the hospitality business, industry sources say, most general managers usually have their beginnings in food and beverage because that is where the action is and it really tests one’s grit – guests can’t go without good food and hotels should have it round-the-clock! Colin A. Baker, the man from Down Under, has done more than that. “I have been in this industry for quite a while. I have worked my way up basically from the bottom,” Baker told Dubai Vibes Magazine. “And so,” he added, “I have worked in restaurants, bars, front office, back office. I have worked in all aspects of the hospitality field.” Baker, regional director for the Middle East of StayWell Holdings, the hotel group that owns Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel, where he is also general manager at, shared that he “has not really taken many management courses.” “My background has really been experience-based. And so, I utilized that experience to further my career,” he said. Like all GMs, Baker’s day starts with a check on the bookings. “The moment is very volatile. The demand can go up and down quite a lot,” he said. Having been in Dubai for the past threeand-a-half years, Baker indicated he has grown fond of this international city the never sleeps. And for a reason: “I have had a busy initiation into Dubai,” Baker said. Colin has overseen StayWell Holdings’ growth from having only one hotel in the region, the Park Regis Kris Kin, to now having two other properties open, Park Regis Business Bay and the other, Park Regis Boutique Jumeirah. He is also responsible for overseeing the Park Regis franchise presently operating in Bahrain and three other Park Regis properties currently under construction in Makkah, Riyadh and Jeddah, two of which are planned to open this year. Having been included as part of the Hotelier Middle East’s Power 50 in both 2019 and 2020, Baker has proudly risen within the hospitality industry to become one of the MENA region’s most influential hoteliers during his time in Dubai. All said, Baker has these words for the city that has been his second home since 2017: “Dubai is a very nice place to come and live in,” he said. “It is quite an easy place to fit in.”

Dubai has some of the best chefs in the world.’

“Do we have the best chefs in the world? Yes, we do. Are we represented outside the country? Yes, we are,” said Cuthbert, who also is general manager of Jumeirah Creekside Hotel. “When we look at what we could do with our chefs in Germany and Luxembourg – these are one of the best competitions in the world – and we come home with 74 medals, I think that is very true: we have some of the best chefs in the world,” said Cuthbert, who has been in Dubai since Jan. 6, 1992. The ECG, which regularly holds three worldclass competitions a year, started its first with about 60 entries. By the time it was celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2019, the competition had 1,500 entries.

Dubai Vibes News Team Dubai, with its thousands of people in the culinary field, “has some of the best chefs in the world.” This, according to Andy Cuthbert, chairman of the Emirates Culinary Guild (ECG), which has close to 3,000 chefs among its members, who said major international competitions where chefs from the UAE have joined and brought home awards are testament to this.

“We can help people make their lives better through the competitions,” said Cuthbert. A lot of former members have settled across the world these days. The Guild is one of the most respected associations within the World Association of Chefs’ Societies (WACS) to which it is a member of. The Guild, in 2008, hosted the WACS congress which was held for four days and participated in by over 1,000 chefs. It won the bid and will, next year, host another WACS Congress in Abu Dhabi.

Fintech gurus have the cure for rejected medical claims Dubai Vibes News Team Dubai, UAE: A group of likeminded individuals have come up with a way that would hopefully address, once and for all, recurring problems in the medical industry about unpaid or delayed insurance claims. Karim Dakki, CEO and founder of KLAIM, a UAEbased fintech platform, recently sat down with Dubai Vibes Magazine and gave a picture of just how bad the situation is in terms of claims gathering dust.

VOL 1 • ISSUE 3 | APRIL 2021

“Hospitals, clinics and pharmacies are bleeding cash every minute as a result of rejected medical claims,” Dakki said. He said insurance companies usually have “99 reasons” to turn down an insurance claim ranging from insufficient documentations to prescription issues. “KLAIM will stop the outflow by minimizing revenue loss of healthcare providers and enabling them to manage the cash flow more efficiently,” Dakki said. KLAIM, he explained is a smart software service platform currently with more than 2.3 million visitor claims “We have a technology that used artificial intelligence that detects errors and speed up the date entry,” Dakki said. According to recent reports, KLAIM has raised $1 million in seed investment from TechStars and a group of strategic regional investors. Joined by Ghafoor Ahmad and Meriem Tamarzizt, the founders plan to expand presence and operations in the UAE and Saudi Arabia in the coming months. KLAIM is a software as a service (SaaS) fintech platform aimed at improving the quality of the medical care especially in these times of the coronavirus pandemic.

the hours, worked silently and focused on my goal, hoping that my food and work would one day speak for itself,” he added. After six months of working as a kitchen helper, Bojador was given a chance to work in line with other chefs where the head chef taught him the ropes before finally giving him a big break.

Dubai top chef’s humble beginnings DUBAI:When he was in college pursuing a career in law, Ricardo R. Bojador, then a working student, washed dishes at a five-star hotel in Ermita, Manila to support himself. Today, Bojador, 42, still works at a five-star hotel. But not anymore a dishwasher; rather an executive chef at a plush world-class, fine-dining restaurant in Dubai. Bojador, who hails from Bicol, had to

drop out of college at University of the East – Recto to work full time and bring food on the table for his siblings and parents. “In 2006, I moved to Dubai to have a better opportunity. I applied for a job in one of the best Japanese restaurants and received a reply from them the next day,” recalls Bojador. Success did not happen overnight. The interview by the Japanese chef was

Expat opens restaurant showcasing Filipino culinary wonders DUBAI, United Arab Emirates: She calls it “gourmet Filipino food”. And so with this in mind, Gina Valbuena took a big turn after her job as Business Support Manager to the CEO for Asset Management of a giant hospitality company in Dubai and opened a restaurant in the city that she named Kubyertos Cuisine. “Looking back at our favorite family meals in my hometown Davao, I remember that side by side to our Sinaing na Tulingan and Pipino Ensalada were my mother’s laughter and smiles,” Valbuena said.

very short and straight forward, said Bojador, who was accepted for the job. “Washing vegetables and receiving deliveries were my first responsibilities in the kitchen. I would come early from my usual shift so I could finish my task and have extra time to learn more,” he told Rappler. “The struggle was real,” Bojador said. “My mission was to gain the skills required to be great in my field, and I worked towards that every day. I put in

“In many ways, I felt this similar joy in Dubai as I became part of the robust Filipino community here. This is the experience our team wanted to bring to Kubyertos Cuisine: the comfort of our homes brought together by our food,” she added. Kubyertos is Tagalog for cutlery – from the Spanish, cubiertos. Valbuena said Dubai, being an international expatriate city and host to Expo 2020, is the perfect place to showcase the Filipino cuisine before the world culinary stage. Expo 2020 was postponed last year due to the pandemic and will open in October this year instead. The restaurant is located quite close to the Expo 2020 site. “Dubai is an international environment. The beauty of the emirate is that the diverse cultures do not compete with each other, but work hand in hand.To complement the global community in Dubai, we designed our menu not only to the Filipino palate but to entice the international market as well,” Valbuena said.

Bojador’s exposure to the city’s highend dining venues came in 2008 when he got a job as Demi Chef at Jumeirah Group Hotels where he worked for five years. “During that time I gained more valuable experience in running a kitchen. I continued working hard and got promoted thrice until I was given the position of Sous Chef,” Bojador said. And there was no other way but up, since. In 2013, Bojador joined the trendy Katsuya by Starck as a Senior Sous Chef. He would later on become head chef and then, executive chef. In 2018, Katsuya won the BBC Good Food Awards for Best Japanese Restaurant. Bojador was recently appointed executive chef at Wakame fine-dining restaurant.

“I have very high regard for our local culture, immense awe for Filipino talents, hospitality and congeniality and deep appreciation of delectable dishes from different regions of the Philippines – what could be better than showcasing all of these to our greatest inspiration, the overseas Filipinos, and proudly introducing the same to the rest of the world?” she said. “Whether we like to admit it or not, our fingerprints are all over the first bricks that built this beautiful nation. I wanted us to be proud of this fingerprint – to be proud of our presence and identity in the UAE.” Valbuena said their plan is to position Kubyertos Cuisine as “Filipino representation among the great Asian cuisines – creating a destination into our heritage.” Valbuena earned her BSC Degree major in Accounting with Magna Cum Laude recognition from Ateneo de Davao University.

Miss Wang: ‘It was love at first sight’ Dubai Vibes News Team Dubai, UAE: Everybody’s upbeat about this international city’s dining scene these days as activities gather steam and more restaurants slowly return to normal operations in accordance with strict government guidelines to prevent the spread of the pandemic. One such person is Engr. Bharat Naidu, who just recently ventured from the real estate/construction sector to food and beverage, having acquired the popular bar, Miss Wang on Level P1 of the

Majestic City Retreat Hotel along Al Mankhool Rd. “I acquired the business in the first quarter of 2021. Needless to say, 2020 has been devastating for the hospitality industry, globally. But 2021 will definitely be the gamechanger,” said a really optimistic Naidu. Naidu said he has always been a food and beverage enthusiast. “In all my travels across the globe, I have always been impressed with the diverse food on offer, although I do have a special place for PanAsian cuisine. So, when I came across the opportunity to engage with Miss Wang, it was love at first sight! This is my first food and beverage venture and most definitely won’t be the last,” said Naidu. Naidu said running Miss Wang is a “challenging task.” “But, I’m absolutely loving it,” he said. “The pandemic,” Naidu added, “has created new norms, which limit your reach unlike in the past

for a metropolitan city like Dubai. The consumers have become price-sensitive due to the Covidinfluenced austerity measures, which in turn compromises the turnovers. But this is expected to elevate. “The slack period helps me analyze the business better and prepare for the busy period. I may still be learning the ropes but I have a dynamic team supporting me to achieve the goals,” he said. Doing business in Dubai is awesome, Naidu said, who has been in the city for the past 12 years. “It’s a land of opportunities. The infrastructure of the country is absolutely terrific, thus will always be the destination of choice for people to travel post the pandemic era. Naidu, who holds a degree in mechanical engineering from Karnataka University in India, is heir to a family business that his late father started from scratch. He had been into human resource consultancy and on to real estate and construction.

Nitin Aggarwal – from learning the ropes to running his own Dubai Vibes News Team Delhi, India: Sometime in 2003, Nitin Aggarwal, at the time supporting himself, walked into a hotel for a client meeting, where a Dubai-based bank was also having walk-in interviews. “I went for the interview and was selected as a sales executive selling credit cards in UAE,” Aggarwal told Dubai Vibes Magazine. “I worked really hard,” he said. Eighteen years later today, Aggarwal, 43, is running his own

company – DealDirect Marketing, a Direct Sales Agency in the banking industry, and has, among its clients, the very bank he had worked for back in the day. It was not a story of overnight success though, and one spawned by ups and downs of working in the banking sector. “I started it from scratch,” said Aggarwal, who at a young age of 14 was already out making a living for himself in Delhi, India; and once had to drop out of college for lack of money to support his tuition. He did manage to get back as a working student and graduated in 2001. Aggarwal, who has obviously developed keen understanding of the market, said outsourcing seems to have become the trend. “They find it more cost-effective to do so,” he said. “This particular model has a future,” said the father of two kids – an eight-year-old girl and a threeyear-old lad. Looking back, Aggarwal has come full circle, filling up a void in the market so that Dubai’s economy continue steaming back to life from last year’s slowdown caused by the pandemic.

UAE’s hospitality industry set for impressive recovery in 2021, expert says Dubai, UAE: It has been no secret that the UAE’s hospitality industry was rocked by the onset of the pandemic, which is still very much in force over a year since the start of lockdown and border closures. Before the pandemic, the direct contribution of travel and tourism to the Middle East’s GDP was predicted to reach $133.6bn by 2028, according to Jasmeet Bakshi, Hotel Show group event director, in an opinion piece, citing World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). Whilst those figures might not be achievable, he said, “there are many reasons to be hopeful that strong recovery is a possibility.” According to forecast analysis carried out by Tourism Economics, the vaccine rollout, pent-up demand supported by consumer savings, employment recovery, and the removal of travel restrictions will motivate a return to 5.6% global economic growth this year, Bakshi said. “We have also seen the normalization of trade and diplomatic relations with Qatar and the re-scheduled Expo 2020 later this year, pointing to a swift and decisive sector recovery as regional international travel resumes,” Bakshi said. “I have also been deeply inspired by the resilience and resourcefulness shown by the hospitality industry over the challenges of the past months. The pandemic is like a seismic inflection point for the global tourism industry and has resulted in huge amounts of relearning and re-thinking and the adoption of many firsts. “We have had to pivot, and pivot fast, towards the accelerated use of technology, the adoption of new hygiene standards and the increasingly cohesive

26

vision of the region’s hospitality leaders,” Bakshi said. Hygiene has been placed high on a list of guests’ priorities and the industry has responded with unwavering adherence to health and safety standards, to re-earn the trust of its guests. The immediate industry response to the pandemic was to improve cleaning standards to alleviate travellers’ hygiene concerns. Bodies such as Bureau Veritas were quick to introduce its ‘Safeguard’ label, to help operators signal their adherence to stringent safety, training and cleaning protocols and enable resumption of operations. “Over time, we have also seen a number of hotels re-looking at their public spaces such as restaurants, pool areas, bars, and lobbies, re-designing and reconfiguring where necessary, so that smaller groups of people can interact safely,” the group event director said. Hotels, Bakshi also noted, have likewise embraced technology as “contactless” has become the new reality, from check-in and check-out, in-room dining and intuitive chatbots, all designed to reduce human interaction. Such investment is here to stay, he further said, explaining that the pandemic will undoubtedly result in major long-term shifts in how the travel and hospitality industry functions and interacts moving forward. Organizations such as HFTP are key in bringing the latest technology related trends to the region and I’m glad to see them take up a presence at The Hotel Show Dubai this May.The team will offer access to the latest systems and products that are breaking new ground and allow buyers the chance to educate themselves

around the options on offer. Those who make the right investments and use digital technologies to improve and elevate their guest offerings will be in the best position to thrive in the aftermath of the pandemic. Joined-up action from the government and private sector has also been incredibly important to ensure a unified response to the crisis. “The Dubai Government and Dubai Tourism should be praised for its visionary leadership and ability to rapidly deliver new guidelines to align various stakeholders. I believe the UAE has offered one of the most agile and responsive guidelines globally, setting the bar for conduct that will further support recovery. The Hotel Show Dubai 2021, which provides a longoverdue opportunity for industry professionals in the Middle East to network and reunite face-to-face, has support from Dubai Tourism in the capacity of Supporting Partner for our Hospitality Leadership Forum and from international bodies, specifically the European Union, who will serve as the Education Partner for our F&B Stakeholders Summit and the Official Partner for the Chef’s Table, and Poland, in the capacity of our Supporting Country Partner. “One of my fundamental beliefs is that new opportunities always emerge from times of conflict. Those who understand the new definition of postpandemic reality, adapt, and respond will benefit from this new landscape. I am confident that the UAE has shown a remarkable ability to adapt to the needs of the time and will continue to maintain its position as a hospitality world leader and blueprint for success in the months ahead,” Bakshi said.

Up close with Mara Firetti: Crusading for the environment through the arts Dubai, UAE: Mara Firetti is an entrepreneur dedicated to the promotion and growth of international artists. In the last 15 years as an art advisor and artist promoter, Mara principally dedicated her expertise in developing the career of sculptor Helidon Xhixha. Xhixha is an Albanian-born artist, but Italian by adoption, whose monumental sculptures and innovative technique, together with an approach that is the result of an artistic upbringing and a formal education, have granted him international acclaim. Meantime, organising public events and international exhibitions in renown institutions and art fairs, allowed Mara to acquire a large portfolio of high-profile art collectors, and extensive experience as a press officer for artists with a network of important relationships. At her right hand side is her team, two art professionals, Sossy Dikijian and Celine Azem. Together they share a deeply rooted passion in art and all it stands for. Coming from entirely different backgrounds and specializations, yet still sharing the same mission: To establish an Art Gallery that promotes and supports emerging and established artists that create meaningful artworks and deliver a strong statement from different corners of the world. The following are excerpts of Dubai Vibes Magazine interview with Ms. Firetti: DVM: What inspired you to open a gallery highlighting social and environmental issues? Mara Firetti: The beauty and power of art is such that it is capable of influencing society by changing opinions, by initiating thoughts, reflections and feelings. It allows people from different backgrounds, cultures and places in time to communicate with each other and share experiences. The gallery in this scenario becomes the podium where all these emotions are shared and received and therefore it is important to us that the values presented are constructive and beneficial to our community and our world. DVM: Climate change..how close it is to your heart? MF: I would say as close as the health and

wellbeing of my family and of my children. We are seeing changes that have never been seen before as temperatures are rising. Sea levels have risen, the amount of ice and and snow has decreased, and the ocean waters have warmed up. We just can’t pretend any longer that this is an issue that doesn’t belong to us or needs to be tackled far ahead in the future. Global warming is here and its now and we need to act. We can all do something about it by changing our habits while reducing our imprint and turn to a more sustainable living. DVM: What other social issues would the gallery be campaigning for? MF: We represent artists from different corners of the world and our aim to share their views on humanitarian matters, cultural inclusion, globalization, gender equality and all that apports a constructive contribution and reflection within our society. DVM: What can the public expect from the gallery for the remainder of the year? MF: After the recent solo exhibition of Helidon Xhixha, we will have a group exhibition of five artists having a common theme: The importance of protecting our environment through sustainable approaches. We are also planning an exhibition with a focus on the function of language and information and the geometric intricacies of calligraphy. On one side, the show will explore the emerging patterns in human behavior caused by the birth of the internet and simultaneously the complexity of linguistic, mathematical and visual systems of communication.

this time, I was able to acquire a lot of experience and meet inspirational curators, dealers and collectors. I structured and organized exhibitions in institutions such as La Biennale di Venezia, London Design Biennale and the Uffizi Gallery Museum in Florence. I also met lots of other incredible and passionate artists and I’m so thrilled that now through Firetti Contemporary we can represent them and share their value with our viewers.

DVM: Can you tell us about yourself and your journey into the art industry? MF: Art has always been part of my life as both my parents loved painting and often took me to art exhibitions and museums during our family trips, but it became my focus and profession through my encounter with Helidon Xhixha, 15 years ago. I had a business and marketing background and as I was extremely fascinated by his artworks I started dedicating my expertise in promoting his career, organizing public events and international exhibitions in renown institutions and art fairs. Betcy Thomas talks about veganism in Dubai: ‘The demand for meat-free food is growing.’ Betcy Thomas, Marketing Manager at Just Vegan, the first vegan fine-dining restaurant to open in Dubai, shares insights about this new trend. Dubai Vibes Magazine: First vegan fine-dining restaurant in dubai... How excited are you about it? Betcy Thomas: Veganism has witnessed a “plantbased revolution” in 2019 and is an ongoing top trend prediction for 2020. Just Vegan Restaurant in Dubai has announced to open its doors at Jumeirah and launching 10 physical locations by 2021, launching 5 Branches within April-May 2021. Meat-free food is becoming more and more established and the demand from consumers is growing. This is also noticeable in restaurants, which have constantly developed their range of products in this respect in recent years. We want to make Vegan food widely accessible to people reach at an affordable price with wide range of Plant-Based dishes. DVM: How/Why did you come about with the idea? BT: The idea and concept of Just Vegan started back in 2017, over a simple discussion between friends about the future of food. The conversation started about the future of food, has now become the reality, Just Vegan. The founders have successfully ventured around the globe, spanning from the Middle East, USA, UK, South East Asia and is headquatered in New York, USA. Whether you’ve gone vegan for January – or forever – or have simply vowed to consume less meat, eating out needn’t mean missing out. Indeed, it can be a valuable source of inspiration, especially for those who have only recently embraced a non-meat-based diet. And if you’re more flexitarian in your approach, Just Vegan restaurants serve flavorful plant-based meal at affordable price. DVM: Could you describe veganism as being the trend these days? BT: Veganism, a lifestyle espoused to cease the use of animal products, particularly in diet, namely dairy, meat and poultry. Veganism is not just a habit but has also become a trend towards healthy living, as more and more people are learning about the damage it is causing to the environment and animal species. The rationale of veganism is to stop stressing, exploiting and taking animal’s life to an end of their species. It is a philosophy based on Ahimsa. Though the concept of Ahimsa originated in India, the term ‘vegan’ was coined by Donald Watson in 1940 by taking the first three letters and the last two letters of the word vegetarian. Awareness regarding food being the major cause of health or disease is on the rise. People are also becoming aware of their carbon and water footprint. Health is the Way ahead. According to a fictional story, the elephant was

appointed as the prime minister of the jungle due to his patience and calm nature. He was also available to help his colleagues of the jungle with his heavy energetic huge body and caring nature. An elephant is an animal who sustains on plants, grass, trees for food which makes him so healthy, energetic, respected and someone who’s looked upon. This may give us great virtuous precedent of growing into a vegan future. Although meat, dairy and poultry provide us protein and calories, their consumption has now become a bit dangerous, as eggs are being injected for protein to develop faster, milk is made by using lab-based chemicals and hormones, cows, buffalo’s and other animals are kept as a breeding machine to bring forth their species. They are tied up in large factories and with the help of machines, their milk is extracted in large quantities. Therefore, in reality, the dairy industry is known to be not so white as presented. Alongside cows and buffalos, many other animals are being shot down to make clothes, handbags, wallets, shoes, jewels, etc. Animals are treated to an extreme level of brutal advantage due to which the population of some animals is existing in the jungle, whereas the domestic ones are treated barbarically to make some or the other products. The two hottest topics of 2020: the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change. The one surefire way to help prevent another pandemic and help address the ongoing climate apocalypse is to go vegan. This year has seen a huge spike in interest in vegan foods,

and 2021 will undoubtedly see an even bigger upward trend. It’s been a year we have been quarantined due to this horrific pandemic corona-virus (covid19) which is stated to be a bat prone virus. Whether it’s grown in the market or made in the laboratory for medicinal purposes, this sets a cruel example of animal exploitation. COVID-19 is known to lower the power of our immune system so that the person is not left capable of fighting respiratory disease. Vegan food habits and practices have been found beneficial in this difficult and crucial time of a pandemic. Vegan diet includes fresh fruits, seeds and vegetables which contain nutrients and micronutrients like vitamins and minerals, which makes our immune system strong and healthy. Correct and balanced vegan diet is also statistically considered to make us leaner and much less prone to obesity than the general population. DVM: How ready, do you think, is Dubai for vegan meals? BT: In Dubai, you do not have to explain now a days what vegan means. Everybody understands what being vegetarian entails and lately also what veganism is. In Dubai, one can now find a lot of vegan food in mainstream super markets, plant-based milks, vegan burgers and schnitzels, vegan ice cream, in regular frozen sections. After all, by adding so many physical locations of Just Vegan, UAE will be one best places in the world where you can enjoy the great vegan food at the affordable price.

At some point, Right Health was attending to around 400 patients a day at its clinics. Nagi said she is proud of their team. “Our doctors and nurses…they are superheroes who were not scared for their lives. They were ready to serve as many patients that were coming in,” she said. Podcast presenter chats about laughter as grief relief

APPOINTMENTS

Dubai, UAE: Following her own experiences of deep loss with the death of her parents in quick succession, presenter Katie Overy created “That Grief Relief Podcast” to open conversations around grief and, ultimately, help others. Having initially started the podcast as a way to share her own stories, her infectious personality and laughter made others feel comfortable enough to tell their stories, in turn creating an outlet for many to laugh, cry and feel joy through their grief.

Luisa Fernanda Caicedo takes the reins as executive chef at Mondoux

“Approaching grief openly with positivity and even humour has always been the best remedy for me and my family. It pains me to see so many people in the region feel they can’t open up about the way they feel, which can cause further mental health issues.” said Overy. “That Grief Relief Podcast” is a light-hearted series chatting about all things grief and why it’s ok to have a laugh in the process. It isn’t just about the loss of a loved one as it delves into other types of loss – relationship, a job or even a lifestyle change. It aims to open the listeners’ minds to how they think and cope with grief.

Experts tackle eating disorders Dubai, UAE: Eating disorders are a growing problem in the Middle East, according to research. This at hand, Dr. Ioannis Delipalas, consultant in adult psychiatry and specialist in eating disorders, has now been joined by Dina Zalami (M.Ed.), counselling psychologist and expert in eating disorders to offer comprehensive in-house support. “It’s important to be aware of how eating disorders (EDs) are about much more than food, while problematic eating behaviors are the most obvious concerns that a person with an ED struggles with, there are internal struggles that are much more complex and nuanced that need to be recognized and addressed. People often project their internal struggles and fears onto their relationship with food,” said Zalami. She added, “For example, a person struggling with unmet emotional needs may continue to play out

that sense of deprivation by depriving themselves from food. Deprivation though, eventually leads to increased physiological and emotional cravings. When a person gives into the cravings for food, they may experience shame and compensate in unhealthy ways which further entrap them in the cycle of an eating disorder.” Dr. Delipalas, for his part, said EDs are “severe psychiatric syndromes that most likely result from, and sustained by, sociocultural, psychological and biological factors.” Dr. Sarah Rasmi, licensed psychologist, meantime, said EDs “are effectively treated when people receive psychotherapy and psychiatric services, alongside nutrition counseling.

Dubai, UAE: A relative newcomer on Dubai’s F&B scene, European-inspired lifestyle restaurant Mondoux has quickly established itself as one of Dubai Creek Harbour’s must-visit destinations. Combining incredible food, attentive service, upscale interiors and stunning views, it is the perfect venue for all occasions, be it a family meal, a dinner date or a coffee catch-up. Taking it up a notch, the restaurant has recently appointed Colombian executive chef Luisa Fernanda Caicedo who is already making waves by revamping some of the venue’s signature dishes. Passionate and adventurous, Caicedo has an interesting story to tell. “I credit my love for cooking to my family,” she says. “My grandfather, mother and uncle were my daily sources of inspiration. Some of my fondest childhood memories include spending time with them in the kitchen.” Interestingly, Luisa’s grandfather forbade her from going to culinary school, convincing her to opt for a career in nursing instead. Having relocated from her native city of Medellín, Colombia to New York City, she continued her medical career – until a sudden realization hit her. If not now, when? It was time to pursue her dream of becoming a professional chef. After completing her studies at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City, Caicedo launched her career in New York’s upscale restaurant, Perry Street, the brainchild of renowned Michelinstarred Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. JeanGeorges’ son, Celebrity chef Cédric Vongerichten, helmed the kitchen at the restaurant and over their 10 years of collaboration, has proven to be a great mentor and source of inspiration to Luisa. Prior to her appointment in Dubai, Luisa spent three years in Jakarta, Indonesia, heading up the kitchens of two upmarket restaurants, Vong Kitchen and Le Burger, both curated by Jean-Georges and Cédric Vongerichten.

Engineer finds joy in fashion: ‘It makes you truly find who you are.’ Dubai Vibes News Team Dubai, UAE: You see fashion models on the catwalk or in pictures and you swoon in awe, wishing you were as perfect. But there is usually a long story to that five-minutes of fame, says Youssef Al Hamadi, a professionally qualified mechanical engineer from HCT University in Abu Dhabi, who has turned to fashion modelling because, in his words:“It allows you to experiment and truly find who you are.” “The final result that people see is polished and perfect. But the effort and time that go behind getting the perfect shot is what people seem not aware of. That’s what makes this industry so exhilarating,” Al Hamadi tells Dubai Vibes Magazine.

The end user, he added, is used to seeing perfect pictures. “But only the people involved in making the images know the true painstaking effort that goes into it. I wish it was glamor all the time,” Al Hamadi said. Al Hamadi said he was attracted to modelling despite his engineering background after apparently realizing he has a think for dressing well. “I have always been passionate about fashion and dressing well. It’s always been a part of my life. I was fortunate enough to turn my passion into a full time career,” he said. “Fashion transports you and your mind to another place. It makes you feel positive, raises your selfconfidence and allows you to experiment,” he added. His advice to those planning a career in modelling? “I would say primarily it is dedication. You must be dedicated to anything you do. Without the drive of dedication, you will lose the push when you get knocked back.” “I had to face it so many times, when things didn’t go the way I planned. If I didn’t have the dedication, I would’ve definitely given up many, many times. You know what you want to achieve. Only you can make it happen as long as you stay focused on the end goal. Positively turn your maybe into an absolutely.” Al Hamadi, also an influencer and TV host, recalls how he got into modelling: “In 2017, I was approached by MMG Talent to be represented on their books. I have never looked back since.” Al Hamadi have worked with some fabulous brands, among them, Zegna, Dunhill, Nakheel Group, Lipton, BMW, Burberry and Diesel. Beautiful Life capsule collection by Dolce & Gabbana

Dubai, UAE: Levi’s has launched a new spring campaign — “Buy Better, Wear Longer” — that raises awareness and speaks to our shared responsibility on the environmental impacts of apparel production and consumption.

‘Buy Better, Wear Longer’

Featuring an inspiring group of changemakers — Jaden Smith, Xiye Bastida, Melati Wijsen, Xiuhtezcatl, Emma Chamberlain and Marcus Rashford MBE — this multi-platform global ad campaign fuses Levi’s longstanding commitment to making quality clothing that can last for generations with the passion of six icons and activists working on issues critical to the future of our planet. “Ultimately, Levi’s denim is meant to be worn for generations, not seasons. So we are also using this campaign to encourage consumers to be more intentional about their apparel choices: to wear each item longer, for example, to buy SecondHand, or to use our in-store Tailor Shops to extend the life of their garments,” says Jennifer Sey, Brand President. “As a company that has celebrated pioneers and aspired to bring inventive environmental solutions to the market, we saw our voice in these young leaders. Change will come if we all work together and we’re humbled to partner with them in reducing our collective impact on the planet.” Buy Better, Wear Longer also encapsulates

Levi’s ongoing efforts to drive more sustainable production practices: by driving ambitious climate and water action and by investing in materials and technologies such as Cottonized Hemp and Organic Cotton, and scaling Water<Less manufacturing, Levi’s is working to reduce our own natural resource footprint and help deliver a more planet-friendly apparel industry. In fact, to cite one example, 76% of all Levi Strauss & Co. products, and 70% of all Levi’s bottoms and Trucker Jackets are now made using our Water<Less® technology — built on a series of finishing techniques and water recycling guidelines that have saved more than 4 billion liters of water and resulted in the recycling of nearly 10 billion liters of water since they were first introduced. These innovations have been open-sourced to share and encourage the industry to adopt these water saving practices. We recognize that fashion production and consumption has reached unsustainable levels: between 2005 and 2020, global clothing consumption doubled. We have more items in our wardrobes, but we wear each garment fewer times. And then we are far too quick to toss it out, keeping clothing for almost half as long as we did 15 years ago. “ — Paul Dillinger, VP Product Innovation.
