It’s Time to Try Silver Fern Farms Produce This Festive Season

Meat is a wonderful source of protein which can provide the human body with many health benefits and advantages. Meat is also something wonderful to socialise and mingle over with friends and family, especially during Christmas time when family gatherings happen on the regular.

Meat can differ from one country to another, largely because of the way the animal has been treated throughout its life. New Zealand boasts ideal conditions for grass-fed livestock including fertile soils, good amounts of sun and rain, a temperate climate, fresh air, and clean water. And because of this, Silver Fern Farms based in New Zealand, raises its animals in a natural, ethical, and sustainable manner which ultimately produces the highest quality of red meat. Farmers utilise an abundance of rainwater to grow grass, after which it is used for the animals to graze on, helping to make the meat naturally leaner with less saturated fat and fewer calories during consumption. Grass-fed meat contains high levels of omega 3 fatty acids and a healthier omega 3 to 6 ratio. Furthermore, the meat is an excellent source of highly digestible protein and is rich in iron, zinc, vitamins D, B and B12, to name just a few. The antioxidant-rich meat also contains Vitamin E, known to protect cell health, strengthen your immune system and assist in fighting infections.

Popular health and diet trends such as Keto and Paleo advocate eating only grass-fed red meat as it is known to be more nutrient dense and a natural protein source, making it a great addition to your meals and diet.

Silver Fern Farms products are minimally processed with no added growth hormones or antibiotics. A wide range of quality beef and lamb cuts are available to choose from, all of which are lean, trimmed, boneless and expertly vacuumpacked to lock in favour and retain freshness.

With Christmas just around the corner, and the beautiful clear blue skies revealing themselves, confirming winter is well on the way, food and eating are all part of the customs and traditions of the festive season. Take your pick from Silver Fern Farm’s steaks, medallions, loin fillets, rump, and stir-fry options for lamb. Whether it’s a Christmas roast, a hearty leg of lamb dinner with the family or getting the grill fired up for barbecue day, Silver Fern Farms has your back for every possible gathering.

Silver Fern Farm products are currently available at Carrefour, Lulu Hypermarket, Prime Gourmet and La Carne in Abu Dhabi. To find out more visit https://silverfernfarms.com.

8 DVM-DUBAI VIBES MAGAZINE TALK OF THE TOWN VOLUME 2 • ISSUE 9 • NOVEMBER 2022 Dubai’s PINKFISH releases his newest single ‘You Can’t Stop Me Now’ image credit: MAJD BRAVO image credit: MAJD BRAVO image credit: MAJD BRAVO

Through his undeniably great beats and rhythm, a motivated and one-of-a-kind DJ is now in the city of Dubai tribalizing and transforming the fantastic metropolitan place into a much modern and fun nightlife.

Edward Salmon, also known as PINKFISH, has reached new heights with the release of his first single, ‘You Can’t Stop Me Now,’ from his debut album, ‘Swimming Upstream Vol.1.’

PINKFISH is originally from the United Kingdom and has spent the past few years living in the USA and Australia before basing himself in the Middle East. This summer he played in various countries across Europe and will be travelling to Australia over the Christmas and New Year holidays to perform and get people dancing down under.

This musician has made a name for himself by performing on the mainstage alongside DJ superstars such as Clean Bandit, Example, and The Kaiser Chiefs. He is currently DJing in various parts of the UAE, specifically at various festivals and private parties. He will be adding a few more countries to his list in the coming months as he spreads his music around the world.

PINKFISH was born with a passion for music. Aside from his distinct identity, he began DJing just one year ago. Yes, you read that correctly, it was only one year ago. Furthermore, he is now producing his own music and it is available on all music platforms around the world.

From drums to decks

Everything started with the drumsticks. He used to play the drums at school and then taught himself to play the piano as a hobby, but he never took music seriously. It is just like music for him is a language that flows seamlessly and naturally.

“If there is music playing, I will always be tapping a beat on myself, a table or whatever is within reach! I have always loved music and I am well known for shazaming things all the time, so when I slipped a disc in my back and was no longer able to exercise as a passion, music took centre stage” he shared.

PINKFISH may be new to the industry, but his passion drives him to improve his craft every day. His first gig was a boat party, and shortly after that he was offered the opportunity to showcase his beats during Expo Dubai 2020 together with Tiesto.

Currently, PINKFISH has taken his music to the next level by releasing a new single. It belongs to the ‘MainStage’ genre and is a very catchy and hypnotic dance track. It’s been played on several radio stations, and the response has been incredible.

According to James Haskell, his new track is an “absolute banger” so much so, he invited PINKFISH on stage to play it alongside him at the recent Dubai 7’s. Many public figures and

influencers who have heard his music have labeled it as the modern-day Call on Me, while others say it is very catchy and vibrant, very danceable and has a sublime rhythm.

In addition, when Dubai Vibes Magazine asked him where he sees himself going next in music, he stated that, “The dream is to play at the likes of Ultra, Tomorrowland, Glastonbury and Elrow so I’d be over the moon if there is anyone reading this that could help me make that dream come true.”

PINKFISH will also release more tracks in his album Swimming Upstream Vol.1 in the coming weeks and months.

When asked why people should listen to his music, PINKFISH states that “The main aim of my music is to make people feel happy and dance and I don’t think anyone would object to something that makes them feel good.”

Finally, when asked what distinguishes him from other DJs, he stated that he views DJing as a performance and enjoys dancing with the crowdkeep an eye out for the signature PINKFISH dance move. He has his own PINKFISH clothing line that really stands out, and says “it’s been great to see the global demand for it, and it’s always special to see people wearing it in the crowds when I’m performing”.

BRAND NEW TAYLOR SWIFT WAX FIGURE IS REVEALED AT MADAME TUSSAUDS DUBAI

The figure of the record-breaking star is a sensational new addition to the newly revamped A-list Music Party Room

Madame Tussauds Dubai announces that a wax figure of country music star turned pop queen Taylor Swift is the latest figure to join its incredible line-up of famous personalities. This marks the first international addition to the hugely popular attraction since it opened on Bluewaters in October of last year.

Taylor Swift is one of the most successful recording artists of her generation and recognised as an inspiration to young women all over the world. Her like-for-like figure, donned in a brandnew look, makes its appearance in the Dubai incarnation of the world-famous attraction, which already features an array of impressive wax figures - royalty, global leaders, VIPs from stage and screen, regional stars and sporting giants included.

Taylor Swift’s handcrafted figure has been styled to reflect the romantic, nostalgia-tinged aesthetic she debuted with folklore, her critically

acclaimed, Grammy Award-winning eighth studio album. Taking direct inspiration from the Stella McCartney look that she went on to showcase at the 55th Academy of Country Music Awards in 2020, Taylor Swift’s wax figure sports understatedly glamorous make up, with her hair in natural waves framing her face.

An effortlessly sophisticated outfit consisting of a long-sleeved, subtly shimmering plumcoloured turtle neck top and fitted, high-waisted trousers accessorised with black strappy heels and a simple gold bracelet complete the elegant ensemble. Adding a fitting sense of music royalty extravagance to her get-up, Taylor Swift’s figure holds an authentic, hand crafted Gibson Acoustic guitar.

The arrival of Taylor Swift’s wax figure at the must-visit attraction gives ‘Swifties’ the chance to snap selfies and shimmy up to a remarkably lifelike replica of their hero singer-songwriter. It

also ties in with an exciting upgrade to the A-List Music Party Room, one of seven interactive themed zones within the attraction.

Ensuring that the atmosphere delivers on its promise to give visitors a ‘party to end all party’s’ experience, the popular dance floor feature has also been enhanced with all-new interactive projections, allowing fans to throw shapes and show off their moves like never before.

Sanaz Kollsrud, General Manager of Madame Tussauds Dubai comments, “At Madame Tussauds we are committed to enhancing the customer experience and making sure that they always feel impressed and amazed by our show stopping attraction. With the brand-new Taylor Swift wax figure, coupled with our new interactive A List Music Party Room, guests can now feel the fame even more when they next step inside Madame Tussauds Dubai.”

Dubai-based boutique art consultant, Skaya Art Agency is propelling the UAE’s creative industry to a new experience with its bespoke, multi-disciplinary art specialist services alongside its roster of international artist exhibitions across the city.

Developed by a dynamic sister duo, Anastasia Kopijevski, and Natalia Kopijevskaja, Skaya’s curatorial expertise facilitates all aspects leading to a gallery exhibit and beyond while specializing in contemporary fine art, pop, and street art.

Offering a wide spectrum of services thoughtfully tailored to individual artist and company requirements, key resources include curatorial advice for on-site specific commissions, and multi-stage exhibition steps. This covers planning and artist development, art acquisition, logistical coordination, collection management, and installation, leading to curated exhibits that engage with the community.

With the capacity to offer a full suite of services, Skaya developed a reputation for global artists to partner with as they engage with the Middle East art community. Such tie-ups led to a portfolio of creatives that the art consultancy cultivates for exhibitions across the city and routinely positions in the region alongside corporate work.

“We’re excited to represent international artists in the UAE and the wider region as we feel there is so much potential here. Our exhibitions in Dubai have gathered a lot of interest from art collectors, enthusiasts, corporate clients, and the general

public, a sign that art appreciation is present even in the aftermath of Covid-19 and economic unease. A cosmopolitan city like Dubai facilitates access to interact with different cultures and build multiple connections, an essential factor for running an art consultancy and expanding the audience of our artists,” said Anastasia Kopijevski, Founder and Owner, of Skaya Art Agency.

Skaya Art recently organized and facilitated two exhibitions to showcase work from its unique artist lineup and offer interactive engagements for attendees.

Faceless by Anna Chekh:

A debut exhibition held at Oblong Contemporary Gallery this past October showcased the artist’s mix of acrylic paint on canvas and sculptures in vibrant colourscapes aimed to brighten people’s moods and evoke joy during the war in Ukraine. Hidden within her work is a signature element –a faceless man, signifying the viewer’s desire to experience everything whilst remaining in the shadows.

Bringing an interactive, element, guests could create a digital piece of art using elements of Anna’s work via a technology installation. This resulted in their very own NFT art creation – a digitalized piece of artwork, aligning with popular blockchain technology.

New York-inspired exhibition featuring Katya Leonovich and Denis Ouch

Held in collaboration with the newly opened BOCCARA Gallery in Gate Avenue, DIFC showcased artwork from two renowned artistsKatya Leonovich and Denis Ouch last November – demonstrating Skaya’s global reach.

Katya’s ‘New York City Movement’ collection is dedicated to New York, signifying the city’s flow, speed, heritage, and sleepless nature while showcasing ‘tunnels’ between concrete building walls, open spaces full of light, and endless motion of cars and people.

Denis Ouch’s ‘Banana Gun’ Collection communicated his views on the promotion of gun violence in mass media.

Commenting on their progress, Natalia Kopijevskaja, Partner at Skaya Art Agency said “The UAE has evolved and transformed into a regional hub for creativity and culture over the years, attracting global interest and gaining recognition as a creative center. We take pride in being able to showcase international talent in the UAE facilitating a connection with the general public, but also contributing towards larger goals of supporting the nation’s innovative thinking and collaboration values.”

With several exhibitions planned for 2023, Skaya is looking forward to showcasing a portfolio of international artists in the UAE and wider Middle East region for industry contacts and art aficionados alike.

A war survivor sheds light on Qatar’s education system

Being a torchbearer for children who will shape the world’s future makes a significant contribution to society. Educators must develop children’s skills and capabilities to bring light into a world filled with darkness and distress. Nothing is impossible when learning is at hand; it gives a person the ability to make a difference.

Aida Sokolar, a 38-year-old Bosnia and Herzegovina national working as a KS2 Leader and English teacher at the International School Qatar, believes that in a world where you can be anything, you should always be kind, honest, authentic, and original. According to her, how you make others feel about themselves says a lot about you.

Aida received her Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature from the University of Bosnia and Herzegovina and her Master of English Language and Literature from the University of Austria. Aside from that, she has a solid educational background, having earned a Master of Management and Leadership in Education from a university in the United Kingdom.

She also had the opportunity to work as a BosnianEnglish/English-Bosnian Court Interpreter. In

line with her eagerness to learn more, she obtained a Project Management Certificate and planned to pursue a master’s in Media and Communication in the coming years.

Her previous jobs revolved primarily around education and translation. She also works on projects related to her field. Her last and current jobs are simply a result of her passion for learning and teaching.

Since 2013, this remarkable woman has been residing in Doha, Qatar. She appreciates most about Qatar’s safety, friendliness, quietness, and intriguing blend of tradition and modernity, which is warm and welcoming.

Aida has been captivated by education since she arrived in Qatar. She was always interested in making a difference and assisting children in growing and succeeding in their chosen careers. Her passion for helping children learn is an excellent source of fulfillment.

Aida has a successful career in the education industry in Qatar, but she still faces daily challenges that challenge her to make everything possible in the face of impossibility.

“The daily struggles I faced were a lack of resources and being marginalized because I do not have a popular passport,” she explained.

When asked by Dubai Vibes Magazine about the difficulties she faced before settling, she said nothing else could surprise her because she had survived the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1995. She claims she did not struggle in Doha.

“It’s not easy being away from family, but we’re all here for a reason, and that keeps me going. I have the support of my family and friends, and I am always optimistic,” she added.

Her ultimate dream and plans are to work in the media industry and events and have her television program, company, communications, project management, and design for the United Nations.

This woman is truly visionary. A vision that has a significant impact not only on herself but also on those around her. A woman who never bothers to forge her path and is fearless in the face of life’s battles. It is true; Aida has the heart of a warrior and the determination of a lion.

Eben Zenodine Johannes

Teaching is most rewarding when students learn that they can do simple tasks.

Teaching is one of the noblest professions in the world. Imagine a world without educators; it would be a disaster. Educators are the people who train each professional before they become the person they want to be in the future. Every child can now stand on their own and run the world thanks to the power and skills of every teacher.

Eben Zenodine Johannes is one of the best teachers who regards education as a treasure. He is a 30-year-old South African who works as a Year 5 Teacher at International School Qatar. Because everyone else is already taken, his life philosophy is to be yourself.

Eben is a young, energetic, and enthusiastic prodigy with many talents and impeccable intelligence. He is a teacher by trade, but he is a master organizer and perfectionist. He enjoys any activity that requires him to think critically while also being expressive and creative. His interests include dancing, music, reading, and fashion.

In 2018, he began working abroad in Doha, Qatar. His teaching career began in 2015, shortly after graduating from university with a Bachelor of Education degree in English Literature and Life Skills. His first teaching position was in his hometown of Cape Town, where he worked with grade 7 students.

“Having all my previous learners graduate high school and go on to study at a university has been one of my biggest highlights to date, he said, appreciating me for having such a meaningful impact on their lives through my words and support.”

Staying in Doha for five years has given him a strong sense of belonging. He found Qatar a specific country to live in and adapt to. However,

he stated fairly that the country’s leaders ensure that all its expats are safe and well-treated.

Eben worked as a Sales Assistant, Pageant Organizer, and Event Planner before starting his career in the education industry in Qatar. His ability to work in various fields enabled him to gain valuable experience and knowledge, which he can now share with his students.

What he enjoys most about his current job, he says, is standing in front of his students and teaching them while also challenging them with questions, tasks, and assessments.

He added, “The most satisfying thing about my work is when students realize that they can do simple things and when the students say thank you for fun lessons.”

Although he is satisfied with his current job, he still faces daily challenges; according to Eben, students’ attitudes and emotions are factors in their daily struggles, as are the work deadlines set.

But the most difficult ones are the internal battles within himself, particularly the fight to not give up when things get tough.

“I overcame this by evaluating all my options, seeking spiritual guidance, and looking up to my role model, one, in particular, is Bonang Matheba, as well as reading books by American-Lebanese author Najwa Zebian; I think she is just amazing with words,” Eben said.

Finally, when Dubai Vibes Magazine asked him about his ultimate goal, he stated that it was to become financially stable and comfortable with multiple income streams. He also wants to pursue other professions while doing more work with education and youth.

18 DVM-DUBAI VIBES MAGAZINE VOLUME 2 • ISSUE 9 • NOVEMBER 2022 Hospitality legend who loves to take risks to seize success opportunities Taha Elouazzani PEOPLE image credit: supplied

Taking risks in life is intended for those with brave hearts. A heart that never stops loving and fantasizing about the best experience of a lifetime: for someone ambitious and passionate, the risk is simply a challenge that can be turned into enjoyment.

Taha Elouazzani, a young man who was raised and born in Morocco, believes that one should live today and take risks because great things will happen. He grew up in Essaouira, Morocco, and was born in Casablanca.

Taha discovered more about himself when he started his adolescent years and entered high school. He even had the chance to find out that music and sports were his true loves. Despite being a sportsman, he did well in school, and his abilities led him to college, where he met new people who shared his interests.

His love of music inspired him to form a group during his college years and begin singing Rap, and he chose to study applied art as his major. This initiative allowed him to share his art by organizing events.

Taha received his bachelor’s degree in applied arts and went to Marrakech to study audiovisual and law, which he did not complete but learned a lot from. After some time. He chose to study hotel management because he believes he is good at it. In 2016, he received his hotel management diploma.

This fantastic man went to Brazil for a vacation after receiving his diploma, which changed him into a new open-minded person and made him love and enjoys life when he returned to his country.

Taha’s first good job was in a call center in Casablanca, where he moderated video content and photos. Although it was far from what he studied, it was a start toward earning good money. But his first job was jumping on boats to catch leftover fish and sell it to make money so he could record his music. Thanks to his determination and love of risk.

When he returned to Essaouira, this is where he began his career in hospitality. He started as a waiter, a receptionist, and finally a bartender, where he discovered himself through art.

“I was always creating parties working on festivals until I found a good job as a bartender with a Spanish guy who is legendary in the hospitality realm,” he says.

Dubai life

In 2021, he was offered a job in northern Morocco as part of a large project with a caviar company to open a caviar bar cocktail at a beach resort for the summer season, which led him to Dubai. He got his first job in Dubai as a Bar Supervisor at Americano Souk Madinat Jumeirah in 15 days. At the time, he was learning about people and how the system works.

“I am social and open to everything, which helped me adapt quickly and make friends. As a shortterm resident of Dubai, I am delighted with what I have accomplished. Several people around me have supported and appreciated my work, which I am always looking forward to,” Taha said.

There is also a time that he decided to make a concept called Breaking Bars that show his art of mixology and creating events. It started on September 11, 2021 and it was his first ever episode, the moments are great that compliments the tasty cocktails that his offers.

“After this event my contact list start to get bigger and people start noticing me, I moved out from this venue to and other one but with the same company, this time it a beach club 10 times busier hard work but I always enjoy it he said.

Taha’s second episode was on November 22, 2022 at Weslodge Salon Marriott Hotel, this time, it was different with a theme of 90’s fashion which was a big success to his concept.

He has been in Dubai for a year, and according to him, Dubai is a well-organized city, and you can tell that all of its residents and visitors are on the same string level. For him, life after work consists primarily of going out to bartending, hosting events, and meeting new people.

He enjoys his current job because he is ambitious and passionate about everything. He wants challenges, which he believes is one of the reasons he chose hospitality because every day is a new day.

“I like serving people and making them happy. I like my team; that makes the day smooth with all the joy and professional skills,” Taha explained.

“The most satisfying thing about my job is the good reviews I get from my guests and how we can draw a smile on their faces.”

Finally, his ultimate goal is to own his bar restaurant where he can share his experiences and transform them into works of art.

Tallulah Harvey

20 DVM-DUBAI VIBES MAGAZINE VOLUME 2 • ISSUE 9 • NOVEMBER 2022
Creating a happy life is a key to achieving a fulfilled life
PEOPLE image credit: supplied

Finding happiness in life is one of the most rewarding goals a person can have. However, to achieve this selfactualization aspect of life, one must first travel down various paths to find fulfillment.

Tallulah Harvey, the owner of UK Clinic and Lead Laser Aesthetic in Dubai, was born in Bristol, UK, and has always been passionate about all thing’s beauty.’ She trained as an aesthetic clinician in the UK under the esteemed Dr. Aiken and launched her clinic, ‘Lulu Cosmetics,’ in 2018.

She has received laser training in Dubai and focuses her attention on her skin with various resultdriven treatments at the new Cornerstone Clinic in the stunning Grosvenor House. She enjoys working out and cooking multiple foods when she is not at her clinic. She is frequently found with her head in a cookbook. She also spends time with her three dogs, Winston, Alfie, and Pablo, who comprise her ideal Dubai family with her husband.

She was always told that if she put her mind to it and worked hard, she could be anything she wanted.

“I have carried that ethos into my adult life where my dreams and aspirations mean I am constantly working to better myself and my life,” Tallulah said.

She also admitted that she is a hopeless romantic and that when she was younger, she fantasized about meeting her knight in shining armor, having a fairytale wedding, and creating a life she could only imagine. That dream was realized earlier this year when she married her husband in a fairytale chateau in the south of France.

She added, “I believe dreams can come true, and I make sure that my dream grows, and I always believe that we can achieve anything we want in this we call life.”

Tallulah worked as a PA for the CEO of a global

advertising and technology company before transitioning to aesthetics and beauty. Her role was gratifying because she assisted the senior leadership team from beginning her journey to becoming a Unicorn. Working in such a fastpaced, commercially driven industry gave her invaluable insights into what it takes to run a successful business.

When Dubai Vibes Magazine asked her what she enjoys most about her current job, she said that everything she does is to help clients achieve their goals. Tallulah enjoys working with clients to create a plan and take them on a journey to achieve the skin they’ve always desired.

She also enjoys the complexity of layering treatments; the work she does in the clinic is only one stage; they also collaborate with the client

to create custom skin routines, resulting in long-lasting results.

“The passion comes from seeing the smiles on client’s faces and, of course, the amazing selfies that soon follow,” she said.

Struggles that turn into lessons

Dubai’s market is highly competitive. Building trust and long-term relationships with clients is the cornerstone ethos, and when someone joins the Cornerstone family, they frequently become friends with their clients. Another area for improvement is having to say no to clients.

Customer service comes first in everything they do, according to her. According to her, the beauty industry sometimes has unrealistic expectations, and they work with their clients to create custom beauty programs for each individual.

“My belief in life is that every battle or fight I have endured has a greater meaning and lesson for me than the feelings it creates at the moment. I try to have perspective and realize my blessings in every moment.”

Despite the challenges that life throws at her, she believes that the main goal in life is to be happy in every aspect of your life. People with goals should surround themselves with good people who share their values and principles.

“Yes, I dream of a villa on the Palm, a G wagon, and a new Gucci and Chanel collection, but most of all, a beautiful, healthy, and happy family with her husband,” Tallulah added.

Finally, the most remarkable aspect of Dubai for her is the limitless opportunity it provides. If you have the desire and ambition to seize life and make it what you want, Dubai will help you realize your dreams.

sets Alira apart? The full bloodied Emirati sings flawlessly in multiple languages, including Filipino, Hindi, Japanese and Chinese. Add to that is his trademark countertenor voice, which allows him to sing in a vocal range equivalent to the female mezzo-soprano voice.

Videos of Alira singing Filipino ballads at two concerts in Dubai have gone viral on social media, with the videos garnering multi-million views. When he sang Anime hits in Arabic and Japanese at the Middle East Film and Comic Con, crowds broke into cheers and sang along with him.

“People who hear me sing for the first time are often in disbelief. They think I am lip syncing to someone else’s voice. But as they get to know me more, they realize it really is my voice,” Alira said.

The 27-year-old Alira discovered he could sing

in both male and female voices when he started practicing singing in his teens. “I was drawn to the songs of power belters like Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. They brought out so much soul through their music and I was just hooked,” Alira said. After years of practice, he honed his countertenor voice, making him the only Emirati performer in this unique singing style.

He also grew a penchant for song writing and created 21 songs in the last two years. His debut song, Take Flight, hit UAE airwaves this year and has been touted by media as a “breakthrough hit”. The catchy dance song was mixed by Grammy award-winning producer Wayne Wilkins.

Through his music, the young Emirati is boldly pushing boundaries. He seamlessly made his international debut at Expo 2020 where he

launched his original song We Are One. The performance was one of the most watched at the global event, that a conglomerate in India sponsored its reprisal in Mumbai with a cast of 500 performers. This earned Alira a new international world record for biggest ensemble cast for a 7-minute single song production.

“Our leaders have set up the UAE as the global hub for world-class talents. I want to be part of this ethos. I want people to realize we are more than just our record-breaking buildings or imported talents. That our own local talents are also global performers and equally world-class,” Alira said. He is thankful for the love and support he is getting in the UAE.

Alira is working on producing an album in 2023, along with other surprises for his growing fan base. “I want my music to resonate with everyone and to encourage them be unapologetically themselves. We can reach our fullest potential if we love and embrace who we are,” he said.

A Fashion Maverick

Interview by Vassilios Nicolaos Vitsilogiannis
PEOPLE image credit: supplied

Diane Pernet is a Paris-based Americanborn international fashion blogger, critic and founder of the international ASVOFF (A Shaded View on Fashion Film) festival.

She became a New York City fashion designer in the 1980s and she maintained a label of her own for 13 years. She relocated to Paris in the 1990s where she got her first job as a costume designer for director Amos Gitai and his film Golem, l’Esprit d’Exile. Pernet also worked for the CBC’s Fashion File which led to an appointment at Hong Kong Joyce Magazine, where she was the fashion editor for five years.

In the late ’90s, Diane took on a “Dr. Diane” fashion-advice column at ELLE.

Her brainchild ASVOFF showcased for the first time in September 2008, with fashion films as a centerpiece and from that point it developed into a yearly travelling international event with satellite conferences, performances and exhibitions.

Butheina Kazim of Cinema Akil interviewed Diane Pernet at Fashion Forward in Dubai when she screened a selection of ASVOFF. Diane strongly believes that Arab countries have too much to offer in Art.

Her appreciation for art is quite diverse. Most recently she was moved by The Sleeping Chapter by a young French artist, Théo Mercier, who has often been called the Prince of Contemporary Art. For Diane Pernet what counts the most is that the artwork passes an emotion, makes her think, it could be disturbing like Anish Kapoor’s blood paintings. The blood-red installations could evoke nightmares, but the thing is they do evoke something visceral. Johan Creten is a Flemish sculptor based in Paris that works a lot with ceramics and bronze. His pieces are sensual and often sexual; recently, many are dusted with gold. She like photographers such as Daido Moriyama, she considers photography like art and appreciates his sensual, haunting night photography.

She loves feeding on art exhibitions, films and life in general. That’s her source of inspiration.

She thinks even the most ‘non-fashion’ person puts consideration into what they wear. She remembers living with an old boyfriend who

was an artist and a photographer and totally against fashion thinking it was very superficial, yet he took great care in what he wore even if it was almost like an institutional workwear. Diane thinks fashion plays an important role in our lives. Some dress in labels to show the inside of their wallets and some dress to belong to a tribe like for instance the tribe of Rick Owens or Demna. Some, and they are very few, have their own distinctive style and at this point, one must define the difference between fashion and style in the most basic of terms. As she sees it one buys fashion, and it has a sellout date, but style is forever and doesn’t necessarily have to cost much.

She gives a meaning to every article she wears, it expresses her personality. On the one hand, she is very warm and open as a person but by wearing dark glasses and a veil she is not encouraging people to come too close. Not at all into hugging but more Japanese in the sense that warmth is not necessarily expressed by the distance between two people.

Diane Pernet focuses on the uniqueness of documentary filmmaking in comparison with the other genres of filmmaking. She’s always felt that life is stranger than fiction. In the current edition of ASVOFF, there was a focus on interesting documentaries like Bruce Weber on the Italian photographer Paolo di Paolo who took the most amazing reportage photographs but when the newspaper he worked for closed he did not lift his camera for 50 years and his own daughter had no idea what a brilliant photographer her father was. At the age of 95 when he’d not taken photos for 50 years Pier Paolo from Valentino contacted him to take backstage photos at his couture show and the story of his life was told in a poetic and emotionally moving way. More than ever she thinks people born around the 90’s have a hunger for what went on before them and that has been captured in films like Kingdom of Dreams Part one and two which cover the golden years of fashion, or a documentary on Azzedine Alaia A French Couturier by Olivier Nicklaus or a film on Sisters with Transistors tracing the women in electronic music through the ages or a film on Guy Bourdin the epic photographer are all really immersive and it is like reading an autobiography of someone you admire but set to emotion and with the elements of the image and sound a personal entry into a world that you would not ordinarily be prive too.

One day Diane made her decision to leave for Paris. New York in the end of 1990 was like Blade Runner in the worst of ways, 80% of Diane’s neighborhood was dead or dying from AIDS, the homeless situation was out of control, drugs were rampant as was crime and as a fashion designer, which is what she was at that time, this just was not inspiring. She thought about leaving for at least 4 years before she took the leap across the ocean with no strategy and no plan other than she could not stand living in New York anymore. Diane believes that Parisian society is not an open society. She recalls moments from NYC where the New York society embraced foreigners, in Paris, they repel them. It was tough the first three years, but she was determined to stick it out. Thirty-two years later she still lives in Paris.

Diane studied film, that is what she got her degree in all those decades ago, she had her own brand as a fashion designer in New York for 13 years and in between she worked a little bit as a costume designer for films and understood that there was a fear of fashion for most directors and by putting together ASVOFF, the first festival actually was in 2006 and it was called You Wear it Well, Diane wanted to show how one supports the other so in a way it was joining a circle, a circle that was her life experience. She likes to support fashion designers and filmmakers but more than anything what ASVOFF really is, it is a cultural event: fashion, culture, film. It is not about advertising or celebrity, it is about creation.

She loved paying tribute to Alejandro Jodorowsky, William Klein, she is happy to say she gave the talented Woodkid his first concert in Paris.

Diane Pernet discloses some of her future plans. She collaborates with Konstantinos Menelaou, a film director living in Athens, for a documentary. She is starting a membership to ASVOFF via the creation of a limited number of NFT’s. She is looking forward to doing something in Japan next May and who knows what else is in store... just keep going forward as long as she can.

Interview by Vassilios Nicolaos Vitsilogiannis

Michel Adam Lisowski is an Austrian businessman and successful entrepreneur. He spent his high school years in Vienna and was granted a scholarship for Mathematics at Princeton University. Fashion was always his passion: In the early 80s, he started his first fashion business, operating a big factory producing his own brand of clothes for a big retail chain. During his time in Paris, he founded FashionTV in 1997. Today, FashionTV is a multimedia platform offering a 24/7 review of global fashion, beauty, and lifestyle.

Today, Michel Adam is the president and CEO of the global 24/7 television network FashionTV. The company has become one of the most widely distributed satellite channels in the world: 31 satellite and 2,000 cable systems, with a total of 500 million households in 192 countries across the five continents. FashionTV is a multi-media platform, which includes TV channel, app, OTT and SVOD services, worldwide that provides glamorous entertainment with an emphasis on the latest fashion trends.

He always dreamed big. His ability of strategic thinking helped him to build several big companies. On the other hand, he always enjoyed what he was doing. During his high school years in Vienna, he spent a lot of time with his friends. Many of them had an international background like him.

He said that he wouldn’t change anything in his

life. He would do everything exactly the same again.

Family is very important to him. He grew up with his mother, who always supported him, and his brother. Now, he’s a proud father of four children. His family is the center of his life, even if he’s far away travelling.

FashionTV is more than a TV channel. FashionTV has its own fashion brand, in collaboration with action hero Jean-Claude Van Damme as well as F beverages such as F Vodka, F Prosecco, Fashion water and energy drinks and several franchise businesses like F parties, F bars, F clubs, F beauty salons and F hotels. Recently, the “Fashion House”

club opened in Poland.

FashionTV provides access to the latest & hottest fashion trends. The globetrotting and international audiences associate the channel with luxury locations, hotels & high-class venues. It is the only TV equivalent to thousands of various fashion magazines and appeals to everyone who is interested in fashion, design, lifestyle & latest beauty trends. FTV’s unique mix in production and distribution, innovative technology and distribution give the viewers a VIP access to the best available quality.

FashionTV is available in SD, HD and UHD and can be received through satellite, IP or mobile application. The F+ multi-content platform features 12 visually stunning streams with all types of themes such as Fashion weeks, Swimwear, Models, Designers, Bridal, Hair and Makeup, Fashion Men and more. The F+ app is available on the web, Apple Store, Google Play, Apple TV, Android TV, Amazon TV, Roku and on many OTT platforms.

Michel has a passion for fashion! He adds “We express ourselves through fashion. It’s nonverbal communication that is internationally understood. Fashion is art for the eyes and my biggest incentive for most of my businesses”.

FashionTV events were attended by international top models, star designers and celebrities from all around the world like Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ivanka Trump, Roberto Cavalli or Flavio Briatore. FTV celebrated its 24th anniversary and had the glamorous World’s excellence Gala in Athens, Greece at the foot of the Acropolis with FashionTV singer Ania J. Hundreds of VIP guests attended the Gala which was displayed on huge video walls next to the historical sight.

Also, Michel Adam spends quite some time in the Emirates. So, FTV organizes many events in the UAE. Many international and regional celebrities are invited and attend the mesmerizing nights.

His motivation to write and produce the film “Exodus to Shanghai” was quite a long time in his mind. He wanted to honor the Jewish people who escaped the Holocaust. A Chinese Consul called Dr. Ho helped thousands of Jews by issuing exit visas to Shanghai. The idea was to create a movie that is entertaining and honoring at the same time. “Exodus to Shanghai” premiered in 2016 at the Berlinale in Germany and was a huge success.

And...his motto is “Everything is possible!”

Looking forward to something special in a day motivates a person to be inspired and continue living life to the fullest. Passion will always be a reason for some people to get out of bed in the morning.

Caroline Ralston, the 37-year-old British Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Proposal Boutique, believes that the UAE encourages residents to dream big and that any goal is attainable in this country.

Caroline is from the United Kingdom and has a First Class Honours degree in Tourism Management. She arrived in Dubai as an Emirates Cabin Crew member 11 years ago and has since traveled the world as a First-Class crew member and then as a VIP crew member on private jets.

She received her dream marriage proposal in 2013 from now his husband, and her proposal story enthralled everyone she told about it.

“I have always been a true romantic, so I decided to set up the UAE’s first marriage proposal planning company to ensure other women get a unique and romantic proposal story,” Caroline said.

While in Dubai, Proposal Boutique works with men worldwide to give their partners their dream marriage proposal. They provide a fully personalized service, from selecting the ideal venue to arranging all extras such as fireworks, yachts, photographers, musicians, and much more.

According to Caroline, the company can even assist them in selecting the perfect engagement ring and writing the proposal speech; it is the complete A-Z of proposal assistance.

As the CEO of her own company, she is a hands-on leader who manages all aspects of the committees she has for her business. Every day is different and hectic for her.

Love for job

Caroline founded a company to ensure that other women receive the perfect proposal, and she enjoys making people happy. She enjoys making each proposal story unique and memorable and working with her clients on the small details that their girlfriends will adore.

According to her, the feedback she receives is fantastic, and they have a 100% success rate with five-star ratings and glowing reviews, making it the most rewarding job in the world.

Although success is approaching, she still faces day-to-day challenges in her chosen industry. Few people have heard of proposal planners, according to her, but their business is very niche, and they want to stay true to that niche, so that is one of their daily struggles.

She added, “The most challenging part has been hiring employees to support the business growth. In the beginning, I was doing everything myself,

from planning our client’s proposal to doing the set-up on the day of the proposal and coordinating the whole event. Still, as the business has grown, I can no longer set up the proposal events, so I hired a team of proposal coordinators.

Caroline believes that the most challenging part was finding the right staff because you need a team that reflects you and your brand and will, take care of the clients and creates incredible romantic settings for them. Fortunately, she is a member of several business networking groups, so the support she received was excellent, allowing her to expand the team.

Dubai Life

Caroline has lived in the UAE for over a decade and received so much support and advice from other business owners. She believes that people want success for one another, which is incredible.

Upon being asked about her life after work and the activities she is involved in, she replied, “I am a workaholic, so life is hectic, but I love heading to the UAQ stray dogs center and walking the dogs when I have time as it’s a great way to give something back to the community and meet other dog lovers.”

“My ultimate dream is to have a happy family and to enjoy more downtime from work. I would love to increase our international proposal offerings and for the company to have its charity.”

UAE fitness trailblazer appointed as chair of global exercise body

32 DVM-DUBAI VIBES MAGAZINE VOLUME 2 • ISSUE 9 • NOVEMBER 2022
PEOPLE image credit: supplied

One of the UAE’s most prominent fitness industry professionals, Catherine HansonFarid, has been appointed as the chair of the International Confederation of Registers of Exercise Professionals (ICREPs), the first female to hold the position in more than 10 years, having been voted into the position by representatives from other national fitness registers.

The membership-based organisation, which acts as the international partnership for registration bodies, is responsible for facilitating international portability and recognition of exercise professionals worldwide and sharing of best practice between ICREPs members. The ICREPs Global Standards set a benchmark of instructor competency, which is implemented through each of the members. ICREPs also supports the creation of new national registers and ensures all members implement a Code of Ethical Practice.

In her new role, Hanson-Farid will be responsible for ensuring members, who span four continents and ten countries and include 250,000 exercise professionals, meet international standards and receive the benefits of professional membership while also acting as a figurehead for the fitness industry at a regional and international level.

“The fitness industry, both in the UAE and globally, is on a significant upward trajectory.

Several factors are contributing to this growth, including a population that is increasingly becoming more health-conscious. As a result, we are seeing increased demand for qualified exercise professionals who can deliver optimum results for their clients.

“As part of our role, we ensure all ICREPs members map their registration process to global standards and raise the bar across the industry. The opportunity to work with our members to achieve this goal is something I am incredibly passionate about, and I look forward to contributing to driving up standards across all fitness-related disciplines.”

With 37 years of experience in health, fitness and wellness, Hanson-Farid has been a central figure in the UAE industry since 1995. As a UK-certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor, she introduced Les Mills group fitness programs to the region in 1999. She went on to establish the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) UAE in 2013 with CEO Naser Al Tameemi, where she remains Director of Operations.

As part of REPs, she is responsible for all aspects of the operation, including day-to-day management, business development, membership, compliance, and marketing, while collaborating with leaders, operators and educators to create networking

and educational events, adding value to REPs membership. The team is also closely aligned with Dubai and Abu Dhabi Sports Councils, where they work together on several initiatives.

Further underscoring her health and fitness credentials, Hanson-Farid was recently appointed as Vice-Chair of the World Active Forum (WAF), a network of national fitness associations and organisations from around the world, with a vision to boost the industry’s visibility – politically, socially and economically – as an essential service when it comes to public health and wellbeing.

“The pandemic had an incredibly negative impact on the fitness industry globally. However, we have bounced back in better shape than before, and our growth rate, particularly in the UAE, continues to gain pace. Now more than ever, it is crucial to maintain the industry’s high standards and ensure we are all working toward the common goal of making people fitter and healthier,” concluded Hanson-Farid.

A past bodybuilding competitor, winner, judge and health and fitness writer Hanson-Farid is proactive in using the platform she has been given to help nurture and support the next generation of fitness professionals.

Rebound Plastic Exchange to support GCC-wide efforts in sustainable waste management

Rebound Plastic Exchange, a global B2B digital trading platform for recycled plastics, is ready to support the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC) in achieving sustainable waste management.

Currently, it is estimated that it will take USD 60-85 bn. invested across four key value streams, plastic, concrete & cement, metal, and bio-waste over the next 20 years to meet targets throughout the GCC region - according to a new report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in collaboration with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

The recent launch of Rebound Plastic Exchange will spur trust and quality assurance amongst buyers and sellers in the GCC, providing companies and nations with a vital benchmark for their capacity to adopt and trade quality assured plastics, equip them with frameworks to facilitate exchange, and highlight the tangible benefits of transparent plastic trading.

Maryam Al Mansoori, General Manager, Rebound Plastic Exchange, said: “Facilitating the demand supply gap with the GCC’s recycling infrastructure will position the GCC as a key actor in the global effort towards circularity. Rebound Plastic Exchange can help do just that.”

The report, titled “Recycling in the GCC: Securing Valuable Resources for a Sustainable Future”, finds that the GCC generates between 105 and 130 million tons of waste per annum, and that the USD 85 bn. investment stronghold would cover design, collection, sorting, and recycling investment across these four key waste streams.

The recorded numbers underscore how the generated waste in the Gulf countries comes primarily from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW), and agricultural waste.

As the host of COP28 next year, the UAE has an

opportunity to not only drive climate action at home but also to set an example to the world. Hosting the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) World Congress in 2023, Oman will certainly build on the momentum by attracting key stakeholders to the region.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) together account for approximately 75% of the region’s waste, which accentuates the joint WBCSD-BCG study. Under the theme, “Chemistry in Action: Shaping a Sustainable Future,” the 16th Annual Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) Forum, taking place from 6-8 December 2022 in Riyadh, KSA, will attract global and regional leaders in the chemical industry to discuss designing more sustainable value chains through collaborative ventures. The forum will host the inaugural Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association Symposium under the slogan “Delivering our Plastics Circularity Ambition” to provide a platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange towards a plastics circular economy.

The Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) represents the downstream hydrocarbon industry in the Arabian Gulf. Established in 2006, the association voices the common interests of more than 250 member companies which include Borouge, QAFCO, among others. The industry makes up the second largest manufacturing sector in the region, producing over USD 108 billion worth of products a year.

Dr. Abdulwahab Al-Sadoun, Secretary General, GPCA, commented: “Plastic waste - when harnessed and managed properly - has significant value which can be tapped into to drive our circular economy efforts. Plastics also perform better when compared to alternatives when it comes to GHG emissions. According to a recent study by McKinsey & Co. there are few viable alternatives to plastics in food packaging

applications, with plastics having a lower GHG impact in 13 of the 14 non-plastic alternatives analyzed. This is thanks to its Inherent properties which help to drive down CO2 emissions in many modern applications today.”

In fact, where poor plastics disposal practices can threaten human health, its sustained recycling could cut carbon dioxide emissions by 10 to 12 million tons each year and reduce primary energy consumption by around 4% overall.

Yet at present, low GCC recycling rates are leading to losses of large volumes of recycled plastics, which have crucial applications, such as in construction, medicine and food packaging.

Plastic consumption in Qatar is still currently capped at 145.8kg per capita, out of which a mere 1% is recycled. The highly anticipated global football event is currently expecting 1.5 million visitors this quarter. A series of workshops were held to provide local organizations and businesses with tools to host the upcoming wave of participants and prevent single-use plastic consumption from snowballing. Current plans to seize 60% of all waste produced during the football season for recycling will act as a clear differentiator.

Today, the UAE plastic recycling market is forecast to reach 1.44 million tonnes by 2030, and could greatly benefit from neighbouring Bahrain, a state that bolsters material recycling (MRF) and plastic (PRF) recycling facilities but lacks feedstock.

Increasing waste circularity aligns with environmental and economic benefits since recycling was proven to create over 50 times as many jobs as landfills and incinerators and translates to at least 200 - 300 thousand jobs in the GCC by 2040.
