2016-17 Season Preview Coming off a disappointing season, the experience gained by the youth bunch of Fightin’ Quakers a year ago will benefit the Wilmington College men’s basketball program in 2016-17. Despite returning three starters and seven letterwinners, the complexion of the team is not the same from a season ago.
4
“They are two completely different teams,” said Wilmington head coach K.C. Hunt. “We went into last season with one and a half guys with actual game experience. We are thankful, although still young, to be in the position where we are significantly more prepared to compete at the level we want to compete in. “We obviously have a history of competing at a real high level as we have averaged 15 wins every year I have been here, so what happened last year was unacceptable,” Hut continued. “That was something that was in the past that we had to go through as a group, and I think we learned a lot from it; I expect us to be really competitive.” Junior Christian Jones (Hamilton, OH/ Hamilton) is ready to take the next step in his development. After assuming the lead perimeter scorer role, Jones is surrounded by a more experience cast of characters which should aid his growth as a player. Christian Jones reached double figures 16 times last season in finishing second on the team in scoring with 13.5 points. He scored at least 20 points five times, including in all three of the final games. The lanky guard connected on a three-pointer in 20 of the 24 games. After taking the primary point guard duties in January, junior D.J. Iles (Fayetteville, OH/ Fayetteville Perry) had his scoring production nearly doubled. In the first eight games, he

averaged 6.6 points, and 10.7 points during the rest of the season. While his scoring went up, his assists went down. He averaged 4.5 assists in the first eight, and 2.8 for the rest of the year. Iles finished with 9.3 points, 3.6 assists and 1.9 rebounds. Depth in the backcourt will not be a problem this season as junior Jordan Jones (Dayton, OH/Thurgood Marshall), sophomore Will Patrick (Chester, PA/Pickerington Central (OH)) and sophomore Kevin Lewis (Cincinnati, OH/Clark Montessori) all gained valuable experience for the Fightin’ Quakers.
Jordan Jones has the most experience of the trio, playing in 39 career games with two starts. Both starts came his freshman season as he didn’t return to Wilmington until the second semester of his second season. He is averaging 12.6 minutes and 3.3 points in his career. Patrick played in all 24 games last season with eight starts, averaging 17.4 minutes and 5.4 pints and 2.2 boards, while Lewis averaged 5.7 points and 16.7 minutes in his nine games. Freshmen Payton Smith (Cincinnati, OH/ Purcell Marian), William Green (Fairfield, OH/Roger Bacon), William Hansford (Cleveland, OH/Richmond Heights) and Darius Dunson (Kettering, OH/Fairmont) will all have the opportunity to crack Wilmington’s deep rotation.
Junior D.J. Iles saw major improvements as the season progressed a year ago.
Wilmington’s lack of height could be a problem for a team that was beaten on the glass by an average of 11 boards a season ago, and lost its leading rebounder.
several different options and weapons. Our growth has to come with the ability to complete possessions with a defensive stop with a defensive rebound.
Senior Malcolm Pittman (Huber Heights, OH/Wayne) will provide some bulk on the inside, while sophomores Andrew Russell (Columbus, OH/Central Crossing ) and Jordan Hecker (Delaware, OH/Rutherford B. Hayes) will bring some length and athleticism to the forward position.
“Rebounding needs to be a team mentality where we all have a stake in the game,” Hunt continued. “It’s not just our bigs; every one on the court and all 20 of us. We need to do whatever it takes to end the possession with a defensive rebound.”
Russell started all 22 games he played, averaging 7.7 points and 2.8 boards in 21.7 minutes. Pittman appeared in all 24 games, averaging 8.3 minutes, 3.2 points and 2.3 boards, while Hecker averaged 15.6 minutes in nine games with 4.4 points and 3.4 rebounds. However, rebounding will have to be a collective effort by all five members on the court. “I think this team will go as far as we can defend and rebound,” said Hunt. “We have the ability to put the ball in the basket with
While undersized, junior Nathan Scott (Sardinia, OH/Eastern) will be able to stretch the defenses and battle defensively on the blocks. Scott finished the season averaging 3.6 points and 2.4 rebounds while playing in 23 of the team’s 24 games with one start. Freshman Noah Chatman (Goodlottsville, TN/Beech) and freshman Jacob Strieter (Huntington, WVa./St. Joseph’s) will also bring some size to the front line, while sophomore Julian Harris (Dayton, OH/ West Carrollton), freshman Trent Gilmore (Howard, OH/East Knox) and freshman Michael Frye (Columbus, OH/Harvest Prep) will bring some additional athleticism.

Wilmington advanced to the NCAA Tournament via winning the OAC Tournament in 2010 and 2014. The Fightin’ Quakers advanced to the OAC championship game in 2012. Entering the 2016-17 season, Hunt has a record of 128-110. In his time, he has coached two All-Americans – including 2014 OAC Player of the Year Malcolm Heard – and six of the school’s 26 1,000-point scorers. In 2009-10, Wilmington won a school-record 22 games and captured its first OAC Tournament title and made its first appearance in the NCAA Championship, where the Quakers advanced to the second round before losing to No. 10 Eastern Mennonite University. Hunt was named the 2010 Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year. Hunt’s team plays 40 minutes of intense basketball that is fueled by relentless effort on both ends of the court. And it all starts with high-pressure defense. Hunt played collegiate basketball at Wichita State University, and finished his career in the top 10 all-time in both steals and assists. A 1995 graduate of The Ohio State University, Hunt coached at St. Lawrence University, Dublin Coffman and Perry high schools prior to joining Wilmington’s staff in 2004.
Assistant Coach Micah Mills
AC
Micah Mills is in his second season as an assistant coach with the men’s basketball program. He came to Wilmington after spending three seasons as a graduate assistant at fellow OAC school, Otterbein. Mills served as the freshman boys coach and varsity assistant at Parkersburg High School during the 2011-12 season, and also works as a lead instructor for Point Guard College (PGC) Basketball Training in Stafford, Texas and at other sites around the country. He attended Ohio Valley University in West Virginia, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education while becoming a four-year letterman for the Fighting Scots basketball team. A three-time captain, he finished his career as the program’s all-time leader in assists and free-throw percentage.
Assistant Coach Kerry Wilkinson
AC
Kerry Wilkinson returns for his fifth season as an assistant coach at Wilmington College. A native of Wilmington, Ohio, and graduate of Clinton-Massie High School, Wilkinson was a three-year member of the Wilmington College basketball team before graduating in 2009. Wilkinson will be involved in recruiting, scouting and will work with Wilmington’s guards. Wilkinson is an intervention specialist at Wilmington Middle School.

Coaches’ Comments Jordan is one of those throwback players that all coaches love to have. Every time he steps on the court we know he is going to give us everything he has in his tank, and not back down from any task or assignment. Pair that with his growth as a leader and decision maker, and we have a player that is ready for a dominant junior campaign. PERSONAL: Jordan Mukial Jones was born on April 8, 1996, son of Jay and Yolanda Jones...has one sibling, Jeremy ... earned four varsity letters at Thurgood Marshall.

With the ability to “Think the Game,” Will has a unique ability to be in the right place at the right time and is always ready to make a play. Both his playmaking ability and coachability are going to aid him as a player through his freshman year and beyond

Noah has a skill set that is unteachable but as valuable as any; that skill is called a “Motor.” With our style of play and how we preach competing, we will never have to tell Noah to tone it down and we are sure he has no problem with that. With his relentless approach and nose to make a play, Noah has an opportunity to become a fan favorite here in the Green & White.

2015-16 Season Review It was a season of growth for the Wilmington College men’s basketball team as they managed just a 5-19 record, while going 4-14 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Wilmington returned just one starter and 21 percent of its scoring from the previous season, so the Fightin’ Quakers knew there would be some growing pains. “The 2015-2016 season was a transition year for our program,” said Wilmington head coach K.C. Hunt. “We played Christian Jones (2) and Zach McCorkle nine freshman and sophomores who gained invaluable experience. We had two great seniors in Zach McCorkle and Chris Jackson, who led our young group. Our returning group has a chance to compete at a high level especially in the backcourt with Christian jones and DJ Iles leading the way. I am excited about our future.” Senior Zach McCorkle started the season with a double-double, and finished the season as the team leader in points and rebounds. He dropped in 14.2 points per game with 6.5 rebounds, and was named honorable mention All-OAC for his efforts. He finished ninth in the league in rebounding and 11th in scoring. The forward reached double figures in scoring 19 times, including eclipsing the 20-point mark four times. Sophomore Christian Jones was the focal point of opposing team’s perimeter defensive strategies, and was still able to shoot 43 percent from the field while averaging 13.5 points per game. In the season opener, Jones established a new school record making 18 free throws. He ended the season with three of his four 20-point games of the season. Sophomore D.J. Iles emerged as a steady point guard with 9.3 points per game and a team-high 87 assists. Freshmen Andrew Russell and Will Patrick, along with sophomore Nathan Scott, showed tremendous development over the course of the season.

The Ohio Athletic Conference, the third-oldest conference in college athletics, is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The Conference is older than the World Series and even the NCAA itself, and has survived two World Wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920’s. Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently, the Conference consists of 10 members: Baldwin-Wallace University, Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, Marietta College, University of Mount Union, Muskingum University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein University and Wilmington College. Wilmington became the 31st OAC member school in July 1, 2000. The enrollments of the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,200 to 4,500. All of the schools were founded in the 19th century, and have long and outstanding academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic standards, OAC athletic teams and athletes have consistently enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the edcational programs.

As a school founded by Quakers, Wilmington College embraces persons from all backgrounds, faiths and philosophies, and promotes in its program and activities such values as integrity, diversity, community, service, peace and social justice, and respect for all persons. The college also values international cultures and facilitates courses in global studies, as well as accommodating long-and shortterm study-abroad and touring opportunities.
While Wilmington offers such popular majors as ed-
ucation, business administration, biology, criminal justice, sports management, social work and pre-professional, some of its more unique academic areas are the highly acclaimed agriculture program and its athletic training/sports medicine program, which are considered among the best in the nation.
34
Popular co-curricular activities for students are the
numerous campus organizations at Wilmington that range from fraternities and sororities to faith-based groups, music and drama, publications, student government and service learning.
Wilmington regularly hosts entertainment programs
designed especially for college students, as well as those open to the greater community such as its highly acclaimed annual peace symposium and Issues & Artists Series, which has brought to campus unique entertainers, provocative and informative speakers, and entities representing diverse American and international cultures.
Much has changed at Wilmington College since
students gained national fame for building a dormitory in 1948. But a constant throughout the college’s 147-year history has been its hallmark for hands-on learning and the transforming nature of the Wilmington College experience.
Students leave Wilmington with the tools to succeed
as they engage in careers or further their education in today’s rapidly changing world. They also bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from the liberal arts, the embodiment of well-rounded individuals able to think critically and appreciate the role the arts, sciences and humanities play in a fulfilling life. They also realize that service to others is often an important road to self-realization.
Indeed, since 1870, Wilmington College has prepared
students to make a living, make a life and make a difference.

Why We Play Division III Athletics It’s not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or making SportsCenter. It’s a deep need in us that comes from the heart. We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat. We do it all for our teammates and for the student in our calculus class that we don’t even know. We don’t practice with a future major league first baseman; we practice with a future sports agent. We don’t lift weights with a future Olympic wrestler; we lift with a future doctor. We don’t run with a future Wimbledon champion; we run with a future CEO. It’s a bigger part of us than our friends and family can understand. Sometimes we play for 2,000 fans; sometimes 25. But we still play hard. You cheer for us because you know us. You know more than just our names. Like all of you, we are students first. We don’t sign autographs. But we do sign graduate school applications, MCAT exams, and student body petitions. When we miss a kick or strike out, we don’t let down an entire state. We only let down our teammates, coaches, and fans. But the hurt is still the same. We train hard, lift, throw, run, kick, tackle, shoot, dribble, and lift some more, and in the morning we go to class. And in that class we are nothing more than students. It’s about pride - in ourselves, in our school. It’s about our love and passion for the game. And when it’s over, when we walk off that court or field for the last time, our hearts crumble. Those tears are real. But deep down inside, we are very proud of ourselves. We will forever be what few can claim ...
college athletes.
