ollowing a disappointing 2015 campaign, the Wilmington College men’s soccer team will turn to a deep recruiting class to join improved returners to help turn the tide. “I am very encouraged as we had a very successful recruiting class of players coming in both in terms of numbers as well as talent,” said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. “I think we strengthened ourselves in all positions and the returning players have come along as well, so I think we will have a much more balanced team with depth in very position.
4
“Last year’s team was a very young after graduating 11 seniors, and quite frankly, the difference this year is the talent level across the board and in each position is just better,” Lewis continued. “We have very good size and we have guys who can be more effective offensively and defensively.” Wilmington’s biggest issue a season ago was defensive breakdowns. The Fightin’ Quakers allowed 42 goals in 19 games. The inability to defend set pieces was one of the most glaring deficiencies. Sophomore Jason Altmayer (Bethel, OH/ Bethel Tate) gained valuable experience last season, and returns to anchor a stronger backline. Freshmen Anton Berglund (Falun Dalarna, Sweden / Hagstroemska), Jon Leis (Springboro, OH/Springboro), Tommy Logan (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) and Gabriel Nygard (Karra, Sweden / Sjolins Gymnasium) will infuse new blood into Wilmington’s defense presence. Juniors Chris Bourque (Batavia, OH/Batavia) and Wes King (Zanesville, OH/West Muskingum) return for their third seasons.
Sophomore Benny Spirk
Bourque played in 15 games with 10 starts, while King played in 10 games with one start. “The biggest thing we obviously have to improve is our defensive pressure,” said Lewis. “We just can’t give up as many goals. That is probably our biggest focus right now; to make sure our defending is much better and that starts with goal keeper and ends with our attacking players.” Senior Nick Baker (Indianapolis, IN/Decatur Central) get the first crack at manning in between the pipes. He got his first opportunity as a junior, playing in five games with three starts. However, his season came to a halt via an injury at the beginning of the OAC schedule. “He is looking good through the preseason, a very good shot stopper and I think he is someone who can really get the job done,”
Spirk is playing the best soccer of his career right now. Martensson may be one of the best midfielders in the conference, and Kappelin is looking to an an impact player. Several newcomers Roman Kirschner (Opava, Czech Republic / Mendel’s Grammar School), Anton Holmquist (Tyreso, Sweden / Varmoto Gymnasium), and Nati Wallis (Clarksville, OH/Landmark Christian) will join veterans Grady Garrison (Cincinnati, OH/ McNicholas) and Alec Rivers (Ross, OH/ Ross) to bring additional stability and playmaking to the midfield.
Sophomore Niklas Martensson
said Lewis. “I think he will be really successful this year in the goal.” He will be pushed by transfer Eli Feuer (Bexley, OH/Bexley) and freshman Oscar Bjornerstedt (Taby, Sweden/Tibble). Wilmington needs to replace a lot of offense in Nick Toney, who led the team in scoring for three straight seasons. Sophomore Niklas Martensson (Torna Hallested, Sweden/NTI) is the top returning scorer, tallying four goals with two assists a season ago. Sophomore Daniel Kappelin (Pixbo, Sweden/IHGR) and sophomore Benny Spirk (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) each scored twice for the Fightin’ Quakers in 2015. “Our midfield play is going be the heart and soul of our team,” said Lewis. “We have three very good midfielders returning as
Sophomore Treshaun Pate (Cincinnati, OH/ Princeton) started to break out of his freshman shell before an injury cut his season short in 2015. But, he could be one of the team’s top threats from the forward position. Freshmen Noah Wallis (Cincinnati, OH/ Landmark Christian) and Carl Bergstrom (Gothemburg, Sweden / Elof Lindalv) will also be a threats from the forward position. With the plethora of threats, Wilmington will be able to find scoring from a multitude of players – regardless of position. “I think we’ve got so much more balance (than last year),” said Lewis. “We will also get some good attack from our wing backs. They are very technical players see the game well and have the ability to get us forward like what we saw from JJ (Buhrman) last year coming up. We might actually do more of that than we have done in the past.” Wilmington opens the 2016 campaign Thursday, September 1 by traveling to Wittenberg.

ud Lewis begins his 41th season at the helm of one of the nation’s most successful and respected programs. With 487 career victories, Lewis is among the winningest coaches in NCAA Division III history.
6
Lewis’ Quakers have captured 11 conference championships and made 10 national tournament appearances, including a berth in the NAIA Final Four in 1986. “The bottom line is that I love to see a competitive team play. I love to see that we can match up and play the kind of soccer I am most capable of coaching. That requires a good technical level and a good understanding of how the game should be played. I have been very influenced by the Dutch and Spanish flavor of the game, and I see how it makes the game beautiful. We saw great goals scored, some great defending and great goalkeeping last year. I expect that we will be very competitive from the get-go this season,” Lewis said. Lewis came to Wilmington following an All-American playing career at Bowling Green State University and stints with the Cincinnati Comets of the American Soccer League and the Buffalo Blazers, not far from Rochester, N.Y. and Penfield High School, which he led to a New York state championship in 1970.
Despite his many successes as a player, Lewis’ early years as a coach provided few bright moments, as the Quakers won just six of 25 games in 1975 and 1976. “I came right into college coaching, as opposed to mentoring under somebody and really learning the ropes,” Lewis said. “I learned a lot of lessons the difficult way. But I did recognize fairly early on that we could run a very competitive program here. Our facilities, our location, our academic program here have given us a competitive edge that allows us to play with the best in the country in Division III.” Under Lewis’ guidance, the Quakers have won ... and won ... and won. Wilmington has posted winning records 34 times over the past 40 seasons. “We are very proud of the tradition we have established at Wilmington College,” Lewis said. “The past couple years, we haven’t enjoyed the level of success we have become accustomed to, and we are anxious to re-establish that tradition. Success on the field is closely tied with success off the field. We feel that when we are winning as players, chances are very good that we also will be winning as people who are members of the campus community and beyond.” Lewis’ personal accomplishments comprise a seemingly unending list: eight-time NAIA District 22 Coach of the Year, six-time NSCAA Mideast Coach of the Year, threetime Ohio Coach of the Year, three-time Association of Mideast Colleges Coach of the Year and 2004 Ohio Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Small-college soccer is Lewis’ passion. “I love the game and working with the student-athletes. It’s such a great opportunity,”
Nick Kinder
Marc Johnson
Nick Kinder joined the Wilmington College coaching staff for the 2010 season, but he is anything but a stranger to the WC sideline.
Marc Johnson is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Wilmington men’s soccer program.
Kinder was a four-year mainstay during his career at Wilmington, starting 46 games and playing in 67. The midfielder/forward earned All-OAC and AllOhio honors in 2009 and was a three-time Academic All-OAC pick. “Nick has been a great addition to our staff. He is very knowledgeable. His knowledge of the game and overall awareness of our program are invaluable,” Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis said. “The players really respect him. He has a nice demeanor that really benefits our team.”
Johnson attended Arizona State University before transferring and finishing out his college career at University of Cincinnati. His primary roles are to serve as the Goalkeeper trainer for the program, as well as head up the recruiting process. On top of his work with the program, Johnson also works as the varsity assistant and goalkeeper trainer at Mason High School He currently resides in Mason, Ohio.
Sean Bray
Sean Bray is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Wilmington College men’s soccer program. He comes to Wilmington after a highly successful five-year stint as an assistant coach at the University of Rio Grande, where the Red Storm won the 2015 NAIA National Championship. During his time at Rio, the teams won four conference tournament titles, and advanced to the national tournament in all five seasons, including three trips to the Elite Eight. Prior to his stint at Rio Grande, he spent seven seasons – including the last three as a head coach – at Marian University. Bray holds the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and the NSCAA National Diploma.

COACHES COMMENTS
Nick Baker had a breakout season in 2015 that was put to a halt when he broke his hand against conference rival Marietta. Nick had an excellent spring season and is an excellent shot stopper. He was the team’s most improved player in 2014. Nick’s work rate and commitment to his player development as well as his selfless leadership are remarkable qualities that serve the team so well. Nick will play a big role in the team’s success in 2016

Niklas started all games in 2015 as a central midfielder. He has great technique, vision and awareness. Niklas has an amazing shot and we need to create more opportunities for him to get good looks at goal. His maturity and experience will play a big role in the team’s success this fall.
Nils Asteburg Junior D Ojersjo, Sweden Porthalla Gym
8
COACHES COMMENTS
Nils returns as a two year starter and team Captain. He played a Centerback role in 2015 and will likely be on the field in a number of rolls including the centerback, wingback and holding centermid. He is very solid player technically, strong on the ball and one of the best 1v1 defenders on the team. His experience and leadership will be much needed on and off the field.
10 Daniel Kappelin Sophomore MF Pixbo, Sweden IHGR
COACHES COMMENTS
9
Daniel can be one of the most dangerous players on the field in the wingmidfield role. He has good pace and the ability to go inside or outside when taking on a defender in the flank. His ability to create dangerous scoring chances is something we need him to do with consistency. Daniel is capable of having a breakout season in 2016.
Alec Rivers Senior MF Ross, OH Ross
COACHES COMMENTS
12
Alec is the team’s returning seniors and gained helpful playing time in 2015. Alec has made remarkable progress in his possession and vision in the midfield. He is one of the hardest working players every time he steps onto the field. Has a dangerous shot with either foot when creating or given the chance. Will play an important role in the 2016’s team leadership and success
Jason Altmayer Sophomore D Bethel, OH Bethel-Tate
13
COACHES COMMENTS
As a freshman, Jason was one of 2015’s key players making the transition from an attacking player to the centerback role. He is an incredible athlete with his speed, quickness, balance, strength and endurance. Jason improved every game last fall and every training session in the spring. He will likely play a big role in the back line either in the middle or wingback. We are hoping to get Jason more involved in the attacking 3rd of the field. He is a very good 1v1 defender and has significantly improved his play out of the air.
Zach Simpkins Sophomore D Germantown, OH Valley View
COACHES COMMENTS
16
Zach’s game has come a long way since he arrived in August of 2015. He is such a good student of the game and has really worked hard on his technical skills to keep the ball in possession. In spring he played wingback in many of our trainings and I can see that he has a good understanding of the role and expectations of the position.
Grady Garrison Junior MF Cincinnati, OH McNicholas
15
COACHES COMMENTS
Grady will make the transition to the midfield this fall. He has excellent qualities for that role as he has excellent vision and field awareness of teammates and opponents. He can be a tenacious defender and very good at keeping the ball. He can strike the ball well with either foot and will be an attacking threat in the final 3rd.

Treshaun had significant playing time in 2015 but was injured in our last game of the season vs Heidelberg. Had his first collegiate goal vs Wittenberg. Tre has excellent breakout speed and a good touch around the goal. His wrist injury kept him on the sidelines during our Spring season.

2015 Season Recap The Wilmington College men’s soccer team struggled to replace the contributions of 11 gradated players, including seven starters, from the 2014 season. The Fightin’ Quakers finished the season 5-13-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the OAC. “I knew this season would be a big challenge especially with the quality of opponents would face,” said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. “Our three returning seniors, leading scorer Nick Toney, right back Jesse Buhrman and defensive center mid Ethan Zimpfer did a great job in leading our team. A strong freshman class led by midfielders, Niklas Martensson and Benny Spirk, improved significantly with each game. We were competitive in every match but two games and finished the season with strong in our last several games with a 2-2-1 record.” Senior Nick Toney (Morrow, OH/Little Miami) earned All-OAC honors for the third time in his WC career, picking up second team honors. He led the team, and finished fifth in the OAC, with nine goals. For his career, Toney tallied 19 goals and eight assists.
16
Freshman Niklas Martennson (Torna Hallestad, Sweden/NTI) was second on the team with 10 points (four goals and two assists). Sophomore Nils Asteburg (Ojersjo, Sweden/Porthalla Gymnasium) earned Academic AllOAC honors. “We developed throughout the season and learned what it takes to win in the OAC,” said Lewis. “We have a core of the key building blocks needed to make a serious run in the conference in the 2016 season.”

As a school founded by Quakers, Wilmington College embraces persons from all backgrounds, faiths and philosophies, and promotes in its program and activities such values as integrity, diversity, community, service, peace and social justice, and respect for all persons. The college also values international cultures and facilitates courses in global studies, as well as accommodating long-and shortterm study-abroad and touring opportunities.
While Wilmington offers such popular majors as ed-
ucation, business administration, biology, criminal justice, sports management, social work and pre-professional, some of its more unique academic areas are the highly acclaimed agriculture program and its athletic training/sports medicine program, which are considered among the best in the nation.

Popular co-curricular activities for students are the
numerous campus organizations at Wilmington that range from fraternities and sororities to faith-based groups, music and drama, publications, student government and service learning.
Wilmington regularly hosts entertainment programs
designed especially for college students, as well as those open to the greater community such as its highly acclaimed annual peace symposium and Issues & Artists Series, which has brought to campus unique entertainers, provocative and informative speakers, and entities representing diverse American and international cultures.
Much has changed at Wilmington College since
students gained national fame for building a dormitory in 1948. But a constant throughout the college’s 147-year history has been its hallmark for hands-on learning and the transforming nature of the Wilmington College experience.
Students leave Wilmington with the tools to succeed
as they engage in careers or further their education in today’s rapidly changing world. They also bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from the liberal arts, the embodiment of well-rounded individuals able to think critically and appreciate the role the arts, sciences and humanities play in a fulfilling life. They also realize that service to others is often an important road to self-realization.
Indeed, since 1870, Wilmington College has prepared
students to make a living, make a life and make a difference.

Why We Play Division III Athletics It’s not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or making SportsCenter. It’s a deep need in us that comes from the heart. We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat. We do it all for our teammates and for the student in our calculus class that we don’t even know. We don’t practice with a future major league first baseman; we practice with a future sports agent. We don’t lift weights with a future Olympic wrestler; we lift with a future doctor. We don’t run with a future Wimbledon champion; we run with a future CEO. It’s a bigger part of us than our friends and family can understand. Sometimes we play for 2,000 fans; sometimes 25. But we still play hard. You cheer for us because you know us. You know more than just our names. Like all of you, we are students first. We don’t sign autographs. But we do sign graduate school applications, MCAT exams, and student body petitions. When we miss a kick or strike out, we don’t let down an entire state. We only let down our teammates, coaches, and fans. But the hurt is still the same. We train hard, lift, throw, run, kick, tackle, shoot, dribble, and lift some more, and in the morning we go to class. And in that class we are nothing more than students. It’s about pride - in ourselves, in our school. It’s about our love and passion for the game. And when it’s over, when we walk off that court or field for the last time, our hearts crumble. Those tears are real. But deep down inside, we are very proud of ourselves. We will forever be what few can claim ...
college athletes.
