Season Preview The Wilmington College men’s basketball program will be going through a youth movement in the 2015-16 season as the Fightin’ Quakers return just one starter from last year’s team. “The OAC is going to be an incredibly difficult league this season as always,” said Wilmington head coach K.C. Hunt. “I love the talent level in our program, but our challenge is going to be our lack of experience. This is by far the youngest team I have ever had.” Wilmington returns just two of its top 10 scorers from a season ago, and just 21 percent of their total scoring. Christian Jones “It’s a transition year with a very young team, I really like our talent level,” said Hunt. “We are absolutely going to be counting on guys who didn’t get very many minutes last year and some newcomers. It is going to be an interesting year. A lot of unknowns, but a lot of pieces we can mold into a very competitive unit.” Sophomore Christian Jones (Hamilton, OH/Hamilton), who is the lone returning starter, was the league’s top three-point shooter, making 49.3 percent (37-of-75) of his shots. He finished fourth on the team with 10.5 points per game. “Christian is obviously going to get a lot of attention from teams, but there is no pressure on him,” said Hunt. “We are going to do our best to play great team basketball. Christian is a very good player. It’s not about one guy, ever. It’s about five guys playing together, sharing the basketball and playing great team basketball.” Sophomore guards D.J. Iles (Fayetteville, OH/FayettevillePerry) and Travis Gleason (Reynoldsburg, OH/Reynoldsburg) will be competing with junior transfer Connor Casey (Upper Arlington, OH/Arlington) at the point guard position. Gleason and Iles played in 12 and 13 games, respectively for the Fightin’ Quakers. Gleason averaged 1.5 points per game. Sophomore Nathan Scott (Sardinia, OH/Eastern Brown), sophomore Dane Blumenstock (Union City, OH/Mississinawa Valley), freshman Kevin Lewis (Cincinnati, OH/Clark Montessori), freshman Brandon Smith (Lebanon, OH/Lebanon) and freshman Will Patrick (Chester, PA/Pickerington Central (OH)) are all competing for minutes at the wing postions. Senior Zach McCorkle (Cincinnati, OH/Winton Woods),

who made an immediate impact after transferring midseason, will be counted on to be the team’s primary inside scoring option. Playing in just 14 games, McCorkle averaged 6.5 points and 4.1 rebounds. “My hope and expectation for Zach is that he performs at an all-league level. I think he has that kind of talent,” said Hunt. “Having that half season under his belt was great for him, he is in great shape and I think it’s going to be a big year for him.” Senior forward Chris Jackson (Ostrander, OH/ Buckeye Valley) played in 24 of Zach McCorkle the team’s 25 games a season ago, and his experience will be invaluable. “Chris is a veteran that has been in the program for four years,” said Hunt. “The attributes he brings are he is tough as nails, always in the right spot, is a total team guy, is scrappy and he just makes plays. Chris is going to be a huge contributor for us this year.” Junior Malcolm Pittman (Dayton, OH/Huber Heights Wayne), who missed all of last season with an injury, brings a powerful inside presence. Look for freshmen Andrew Russell (Columbus, OH/Central Crossing) and Jordan Hecker (Delaware, OH/Rutherford B. Hayes) to fight for minutes in the frontcourt. With Hunt’s propensity to play 12 players a night, there is a lot of room in the rotation. “We play 12 guys a night every year I have been here, and that is not going to change,” said Hunt. “I would envision we will have somewhere in the range of ten guys averaging 10 minutes a game. I think its going to be different changes, different lineups through the year as these guys grow and figure out how hard they have to play. “It’s going to a super competitive process, and honestly, all spots are still open,” Hunt continued. “Nothing is guaranteed in our program; you earn what you get. I like the guys coming in. They are talented. I just think there are young and trying to find out what college basketball is about, and I am excited about the process.” Wilmington opens the 2015-16 season 3 p.m. November 15 at Mount St. Joseph University.

2014-15 Season Recap

The men’s basketball team finished the season 11-14 overall, 8-10 in the OAC, and lost in the first round of the OAC tournament this season. Seniors R.J. Leppert and Dwight Johnson led the way all season for the Fightin’ Quakers. Leppert, who was the only player in the OAC ranked in the top 10 in points (10th, 12.4), rebounds (sixth, 6.6), assists (fifth, 3.6), steals (fifth, 1.9) and blocks (fifth, 1.0), earned first-team All-OAC honors. Johnson was named honorable mention with 12.4 points, 3.4 assists and a team-high 2.0 steals. Senior Jonathan Bibbs got off to a slow start, but finished the season reaching double figures in 15 of the last 17 games. Despite scoring a team-high 12.6 points per game, Bibbs didn’t earn any conference recognition. “Our season started slow, but we finished strong thanks in part to a tremendous senior class,” said head coach K.C. Hunt. “This senior group played in two OAC championship games, winning in 2014, one semifinal and one quarterfinal. It’s a very special group of guys that I’m sad to see graduate.” Freshman Christian Jones burst on the with a freshman record seven three-points in a late December victory over Alma. He made a three-pointer in 13 of the last 16 games, and finished fourth on the team in scoring with 10.5 points per game. A mid-season transfer, Zach McCorkle made an immediate impact on the boards, and finished second on the team with 4.1 rebounds. Senior Ben McGriff was the lone basketball player to earn Academic All-OAC.

The Ohio Athletic Conference, the third-oldest conference in college athletics, is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The Conference is older than the World Series and even the NCAA itself, and has survived two World Wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920’s. Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently, the Conference consists of 10 members: BaldwinWallace University, Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, Marietta College, University of Mount Union, Muskingum University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein University and Wilmington College. Wilmington became the 31st OAC member school in July 1, 2000. The enrollments of the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,200 to 4,500. All of the schools were founded in the 19th century, and have long and outstanding academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic standards, OAC athletic teams and athletes have consistently enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the edcational programs.

Athletic Training

Athletic Training at Wilmington College SPECIALISTS IN THE PREVENTION, TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION OF SPORTS INJURIES Athletic training is an exciting and fast-paced allied medical profession. As an integral member of the athletic healthcare team, the certified athletic trainer (ATC) is educated in prevention, treatment, evaluation and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries and illnesses sustained by physically active people. Certified athletic trainers work closely with medical professionals in a wide range of settings that include high schools, colleges and universities, professional teams, sports medicine clinics, corporate fitness facilities and hospitals. In 2012, Wilmington’s athletic training program earned the maximum seven-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Students completing the Bachelor of Science degree program at WC are eligible for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) examination to become a certified athletic trainer. Students also are eligible for the Ohio licensing exam upon earning their ATC credentials. All athletic training students are considered pre-professional during their first two semesters. After satisfactory completion of the pre-professional requirements, students are advanced to the professional phase of the curriculum, including advanced clinical education.

WC ATHLETIC TRAINING SCHOLARSHIP

All students accepted into the athletic training program receive $5,000 in the scholarships over three years. Students receive $1,500 their sophomore and junior years, and $2,000 their senior year.

ATHLETIC TRAINING INTERNSHIPS

WC interns get to experience first-hand the full scope of sports medicine. Some of WC’s most recent internship sites in the CincinBeacon Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine and many area clinics and high schools.

NATIONAL PROGRAM RECOGNITION

Wilmington students have received an unprecedented six NATA scholarships. One graduate earned the highest score on the national certification exam. WC’s program also has been feature on the front cover of the NATA News and in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

About Wilmington As a school founded by Quakers, Wilmington College embraces persons from all backgrounds, faiths and philosophies, and promotes in its program and activities such values as integrity, diversity, community, service, peace and social justice, and respect for all persons. The college also values international cultures and facilitates courses in global studies, as well as accommodating long-and short-term study-abroad and touring opportunities. While Wilmington offers such popular majors as education, business administration, biology, criminal justice, sports management, social work and pre-professional, some of its more unique academic areas are the highly acclaimed agriculture program and its athletic training/sports medicine program, which are considered among the best in the nation. Popular co-curricular activities for students are the numerous campus organizations at Wilmington that range from fraternities and sororities to faith-based groups, music and drama, publications, student government and service learning. Wilmington regularly hosts entertainment programs designed especially for college students, as well as those open to the greater community such as its highly acclaimed annual peace symposium and Issues & Artists Series, which has brought to campus unique entertainers, provocative and informative speakers, and entities representing diverse American and international cultures. Much has changed at Wilmington College since students gained national fame for building a dormitory in 1948. But a constant throughout the college’s 141year history has been the transforming nature of the Wilmington College experience. Students leave Wilmington with the tools to succeed as they engage in careers or further their education in today’s rapidly changing world. They also bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from the liberal arts, the embodiment of well-rounded individuals able to think critically and appreciate the role the arts, sciences and humanities play in a fulfilling life. They also realize that service to others is often an important road to self-realization. Indeed, since 1870, Wilmington College has prepared students to make a living, make a life and make a difference.

Why We Play Division III Athletics It’s not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or making SportsCenter. It’s a deep need in us that comes from the heart. We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat. We do it all for our teammates and for the student in our calculus class that we don’t even know. We don’t practice with a future major league first baseman; we practice with a future sports agent. We don’t lift weights with a future Olympic wrestler; we lift with a future doctor. We don’t run with a future Wimbledon champion; we run with a future CEO. It’s a bigger part of us than our friends and family can understand. Sometimes we play for 2,000 fans; sometimes 25. But we still play hard. You cheer for us because you know us. You know more than just our names. Like all of you, we are students first. We don’t sign autographs. But we do sign graduate school applications, MCAT exams, and student body petitions. When we miss a kick or strike out, we don’t let down an entire state. We only let down our teammates, coaches, and fans. But the hurt is still the same. We train hard, lift, throw, run, kick, tackle, shoot, dribble, and lift some more, and in the morning we go to class. And in that class we are nothing more than students. It’s about pride - in ourselves, in our school. It’s about our love and passion for the game. And when it’s over, when we walk off that court or field for the last time, our hearts crumble. Those tears are real. But deep down inside, we are very proud of ourselves.

We will forever be what few can claim ... college athletes.
