Season Preview With four returning starters and 10 returning letterwinners, the Wilmington College women’s basketball team is ready to compete for Ohio Athletic Conference supremacy. “We have high expectations for this team,” said Wilmington College head coach Jerry Scheve. “We have pretty much everyone back. We have gained a year of experience. We had high expectations last year, but we didn’t accomplish what we wanted in terms of wins and losses. But at the end of the year, we were playing as well as anyone in the league.”
After spending much of the time last season, Jefferson will slide back over to her natural wing position. Sophomore De’Jah Locke (Cincinnati, OH/Mother of Mercy) played in 24 of the team’s 27 games, averaging 2.3 points and 1.1 assists. She could play a more important role this season. The quartet of senior Mary Moyer (Martinsville, OH/Clinton Massie), junior Emily Smith (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek), junior Emily Harman (Versailles, OH/Versailles) and sophomore A.J. Arling (Minster, OH/Minster) will hold down the front court.
Wilmington’s backcourt features a pair of all-Ohio Athletic Conference honorees in senior Brittaney Jefferson (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) and Moyer is one of the post defenders in the league sophomore Mackenzie Campbell (Cincinnati, OH/ and pulled down a team-high 8.4 rebounds in startTurpin). ing all 27 games. Head Coach Jerry Scheve
HC
In his 25 years on the Wilmington sideline, Ohio Basketball Hall of Famer Jerry Scheve has won more than 400 games. For Scheve — who was named the National Coach of the Year after leading the Fightin’ Quakers to the 2003-04 NCAA Division III national championship — it is an enduring love for basketball, not victory milestones, that keeps his coaching fire burning.
6
“I coached my first team when I was 16 years old,” Scheve said. “After I got out of college I started coaching again. As I was trying to find a career I knew the only thing I really enjoyed was coaching basketball. I remember telling myself that I didn’t know what else I’m going to do, but I know I’m always going to coach basketball, and I have. I’ve done it because of everything that’s involved with it — the kids, the game itself, the competitive part of it.” Since coming to Wilmington in 1990, Scheve’s teams have been the epitome of competitive, winning eight regular season and seven conference tournament titles. The 2003-04 national championship season was preceded by three National Tournament appearances that included trips to the “Elite Eight” and “Sweet 16” in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Wilmington advanced to the second round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament and returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2008. At Wilmington, Scheve has averaged more than 19 wins per season. Eleven of his 21 teams have won at least 20 games. The Fightin’ Quakers have won at least 20 games 10 of the past 15 years. The numbers are impressive, if not awesome, but they are not the numbers Scheve is focused on. “The wins are nice, but there are other numbers we concentrate on to get the wins,” Scheve said. “One goal we have every year is to make more free throws than our opponents shoot. It’s a real difficult goal to attain, but when you do it — and we have done it — it just indicates you’re doing a lot of things right. Number one, you’re getting to the foul line. Number two, you’re not fouling; you’re getting the other teams’ good players into foul trouble and you’re not getting your own people into foul trouble. It means you’re playing smart offensively andit means you’replaying smart defensively. When you do those things, you’re going to be successful.” Scheve also has been named Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year, Ohio Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, and Coach of the Year in the AMC, HCAC and OAC. He was inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014.
Allan King, Jr. Assistant Coach
Whitney Barfknecht Assistant Coach
Allan King is in his fourth season of his second stint as an assistant women’s basketball coach. King was an assistant for the Quakers from 2005 to 2007. He will also serve at the assistant softball coach. He came to WC after serving as the head girls basketball coach at Russia High School, where they won the district championship in 2012 for the first time in 12 years. The Raiders posted three straight winning seasons under King. After leaving Wilmington in 2007, he went on to serve as the head women’s basketball coach at the University of Pittsburgh Bradford. King took over a program with four players upon his arrival and won 11 games in his second season. He was also the strength and conditioning coach, and created a reading/ mentoring program for disadvantaged youth.
Whitney Barfknecht is beginning her career as a college coach after a year in the high school ranks. Barfknecht played three seasons for the Wilmington Fightin’ Quakers under coach Jerry Scheve. She also brings AAU coaching experience to Wilmington.

2015-16 Season Recap The Wilmington College women’s basketball team struggled with injuries all season long, rebounded late to win four of its last five games, and finished the season 11-16 overall. “We had a very frustrating season, where every time we were ready to take a big step forward, we would suffer another key injury that would set us back,” said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. “While we were very competitive in nearly every game we played, it took us until the end of the year to figure out how to win those games on a consistent basis. No one associated with our team is happy with a losing record, but I really felt we went a long way towards laying the groundwork for a very successful future. Our players continued to work hard and improve throughout the year, and I was really excited about how we ended the season, with four consecutive wins against quality opponents, before losing a close game in the tournament.”
23 Alexandria Kingsbery was the only senior on last year’s team
From the outset, the Fightin’ Quakers had to deal with the loss of its senior point guard as Ashley Andracki was lost for the season before a game was played.
Junior Brittaney Jefferson moved over from the shooting guard position, and played admirably. She was the second leading scorer, averaging 14.3 points per game. Jefferson, who was named second team All-OAC, led the team with 67 assists and was third on the team with 4.7 boards. The 2015-16 season, however, was the birth of a potential superstar as Mackenzie Campbell burst on the scene. Campbell was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year after leading the team with 14.9 points per game. She was also named second team All-OAC and Freshman All-America by DIII News. After being held scoreless in an injury-shortened appearance in early December against JCU, Campbell reached double figures in 19 of the last 20 games, including a career-high 27 points against the Blue Streaks. She added a 25-point performance against John Carroll in the first round of the OAC tournament as Wilmington pulled the 67-57 upset. She was second on the team with 6.4 rebounds and added 1.3 assists for the Fightin’ Quakers. Junior Mary Moyer was key to Wilmington’s interior defense. She was handed the task of slowing down the other team’s top post threat, which she did effectively, and Moyer was the team’s leading rebounder – pulling down 8.4 boards per contest.

The Ohio Athletic Conference, the third-oldest conference in college athletics, is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The Conference is older than the World Series and even the NCAA itself, and has survived two World Wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid1920’s. Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently, the Conference consists of 10 members: Baldwin-Wallace University, Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, Marietta College, University of Mount Union, Muskingum University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein University and Wilmington College. Wilmington became the 31st OAC member school in July 1, 2000. The enrollments of the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,200 to 4,500. All of the schools were founded in the 19th century, and have long and outstanding academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic standards, OAC athletic teams and athletes have consistently enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the edcational programs.

As a school founded by Quakers, Wilmington College embraces persons from all backgrounds, faiths and philosophies, and promotes in its program and activities such values as integrity, diversity, community, service, peace and social justice, and respect for all persons. The college also values international cultures and facilitates courses in global studies, as well as accommodating long-and shortterm study-abroad and touring opportunities.
While Wilmington offers such popular majors as ed-
ucation, business administration, biology, criminal justice, sports management, social work and pre-professional, some of its more unique academic areas are the highly acclaimed agriculture program and its athletic training/sports medicine program, which are considered among the best in the nation.
34
Popular co-curricular activities for students are the
numerous campus organizations at Wilmington that range from fraternities and sororities to faith-based groups, music and drama, publications, student government and service learning.
Wilmington regularly hosts entertainment programs
designed especially for college students, as well as those open to the greater community such as its highly acclaimed annual peace symposium and Issues & Artists Series, which has brought to campus unique entertainers, provocative and informative speakers, and entities representing diverse American and international cultures.
Much has changed at Wilmington College since
students gained national fame for building a dormitory in 1948. But a constant throughout the college’s 147-year history has been its hallmark for hands-on learning and the transforming nature of the Wilmington College experience.
Students leave Wilmington with the tools to succeed
as they engage in careers or further their education in today’s rapidly changing world. They also bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from the liberal arts, the embodiment of well-rounded individuals able to think critically and appreciate the role the arts, sciences and humanities play in a fulfilling life. They also realize that service to others is often an important road to self-realization.
Indeed, since 1870, Wilmington College has prepared
students to make a living, make a life and make a difference.

Why We Play Division III Athletics It’s not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or making SportsCenter. It’s a deep need in us that comes from the heart. We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat. We do it all for our teammates and for the student in our calculus class that we don’t even know. We don’t practice with a future major league first baseman; we practice with a future sports agent. We don’t lift weights with a future Olympic wrestler; we lift with a future doctor. We don’t run with a future Wimbledon champion; we run with a future CEO. It’s a bigger part of us than our friends and family can understand. Sometimes we play for 2,000 fans; sometimes 25. But we still play hard. You cheer for us because you know us. You know more than just our names. Like all of you, we are students first. We don’t sign autographs. But we do sign graduate school applications, MCAT exams, and student body petitions. When we miss a kick or strike out, we don’t let down an entire state. We only let down our teammates, coaches, and fans. But the hurt is still the same. We train hard, lift, throw, run, kick, tackle, shoot, dribble, and lift some more, and in the morning we go to class. And in that class we are nothing more than students. It’s about pride - in ourselves, in our school. It’s about our love and passion for the game. And when it’s over, when we walk off that court or field for the last time, our hearts crumble. Those tears are real. But deep down inside, we are very proud of ourselves. We will forever be what few can claim ...
