30 YEARS OF BRINGING YOU THE EXTRAORDINARY

WELCOME

Dublin Fringe Festival 2024

Welcome to the 30th Edition of Dublin Fringe Festival!

Get ready to dive into the wild, the weird, and the wonderful –it’s the 30th edition of Dublin Fringe Festival! For three decades, we’ve been shaking up Dublin with jaw-dropping performances, mind-blowing art, and unforgettable moments. And guess what? This year is no exception!

Dublin Fringe Festival is all about breaking the mold. It’s a celebration of art without limits, a playground for artists to experiment, push boundaries, and defy expectations. Here, the traditional takes a back seat, making way for the new, the daring, and the downright unmissable.

This incredible journey wouldn’t be possible without the visionary artists who have made Dublin Fringe Festival what it is today. Their passion, creativity, and relentless pursuit of artistic brilliance transform our city each year. From the pioneers who took the first daring steps to the fresh faces bringing new energy, these artists are the heartbeat of our festival. This year, we celebrate their gifts, grit, boldness, and determination.

To our amazing audiences, this brochure is your gateway to a world where the ordinary becomes extraordinary. Step out of the mundane, dive in, be surprised, and get excited! This year’s festival features an incredible lineup of over 500 performances by more than 450 artists across 28 venues. Expect a rollercoaster of emotions, laughs, gasps, and maybe even a tear or two.

Whether you’re a Dublin Fringe fanatic or a curious newcomer, there’s something here to tickle your fancy. So, grab your friends, mark your calendars, and prepare to be enthralled. This isn’t just a festival; it’s a full-blown celebration and vibrant reflection of contemporary life, reimagined through the craft of some of the most inspiring national and international artists working today, all wrapped up in the buzzing heart of Dublin.

Thank you for being part of our story. Here’s to another 30 years of bold and unforgettable experiences at Dublin Fringe Festival.

30 YEARS ON…

Dublin Fringe Festival is still the place where artists make their mark: they’re carving out space artistically, culturally and politically in our ever-changing city.

The artists in this year’s programme are looking at an expanded world and asking where they fit. They’re forging families, claiming space for multitudinous identities and creating avenues for meaningful dissent. Because really, what’s the nuclear family without some new queer energy, civic space without access and intersectionality or conversations about the nation that don’t reflect the people living in it?

It’s a brave thing to occupy space in the modern world, and they’re doing it fearlessly. This year there’s a focus on love expanded: the make-up of family, precarity of romance, the urgency of pleasure. Vitally, these artists are claiming space for joy and community, letting us know that the path forward is a shared one. It would seem that communal catharsis and authenticity are the formula to this shared future. You know the one, it feels a lot like safety, but with a bit more sparkle.

Join this year’s programmed artists and let your pleasure-seeking be urgent, victorious. Sit up, take notice. Can you hear the beat floating up through the floorboards, the chant of the protest down the road, the spark of questions in a moment shared? It’s time to set off running, what’s next won’t wait.

ISL Deaf Translations Project

Team Interpreters

This year’s Dublin Fringe Festival features the second iteration of an exciting commission, led by artist and Deaf interpreter Lianne Quigley. Aiming to bridge the gap between the stage and Deaf audiences, Lianne will lead a specialised team of Deaf and hearing interpreters, offering an enriched and more inclusive Dublin Fringe for all through interpreted performances of four productions.

A celebration of Irish Sign Language (ISL) and a vital step towards recognising the cultural heritage of the Irish Deaf Community, this project facilitates and promotes team-interpreting in the theatre context. It goes beyond the familiar model of a ‘hearing interpreter signing to a Deaf audience’ and brings Deaf culture, creativity, and representation to the fore.

This pioneering collaboration between Dublin Fringe Festival and Lianne Quigley marks an important step towards a more accessible and inclusive artistic landscape in Ireland.

Darryl, a recording engineer and voiceover artist, lives in his attic creating radio ads and recording his play. After crashing his father’s car, Darryl embarks on a magic realist road trip to Limerick and Dublin, encountering suspicious locals, deceased celebrities, and historical figures. His special talent for speaking to statues leads to interactions with icons like Richard Harris and Molly Malone. Darryl’s journey is a blend of hedonism, selfreflection, and a quest for either salvation or escape.

Imagine finally achieving clarity after years of feeling underestimated and alienated—only to have a team of men shuffle you into a psychiatric ward.

Terra is one woman’s quest to extract beauty from the chaos as she strips away the layers of society’s expectations.

In her immersive debut, Azeviche channels her seductive alter-ego (Rita) and the wisdom of ancestors, infusing modern dance, vogue, and afro-futurism into a breathtaking dissection of intersectionality. Terra offers a perspective on Afro-Brazilian femininity and dance that will resonate deep from the soil, leaving audiences touched and inspired.

Directed and choreographed by David Bolger, this performance unites two of Ireland’s most exciting artists, Stephanie Dufresne and Alex O’Neill for the very first time – in an intimate duet that grooves between hope and the dystopia of an angry world.

Underpinned by the experimental freedom that being in Dublin Fringe Festival entails, this production investigates the blurred, vanishing line between fiction and nonfiction – in CoisCéim’s first work for the festival in over a decade.

CoisCéim is proud to be strategically funded by the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon and supported by Dublin City Council and Culture Ireland. DANCEHALL BLUES is an anchor of the company’s programme celebrating its 30th Year.

‘I have always liked to pretend my body isn’t there.’ - Susan Sontag

In her book Illness as Metaphor, Susan Sontag diagnoses the problem with the way we speak about illness - the metaphors surrounding sickness that can, in her view, quite literally kill.

Working with six participants living with longterm illness, Dead Centre adapt this groundbreaking text, asking: how can theatre deal with reality? Perhaps theatre can be a place where we live, and die, without metaphor.

After all, the one thing you can’t do on stage is pretend your body isn’t there.

Raphaël Khouri wants to heal the world with plants.

When his quest for a cure brings him to Greece, and he discovers the radical, queer and intersectional origins of western theatre, he’s forced to ask the question – where did it all go wrong?

Based on true events, Raphaël tells two intertwining stories – his own as a trans Arab playwright, and his three-year investigation into the mystery of Dionysos. This astonishing show offers a bold and inclusive new vision for theatre artists and audiences in the 21st century.

Noelle, a 40-year-old musician, is late for her headline show with three influential attendees awaiting her arrival. Armed with excuses, spicy piano ballads, spoken word, and chaotic monologues, Noelle traces her path from day dreaming child to spotlightseeking teen to her current terrified self.

This darkly comedic and vulnerable play dives into hope, creativity, vocation, and confronting your dreams. Are they dead and rotten, or just smelling funny and salvageable? Will Noelle find the validation she’s looking for, or will it be another stinker she’ll wash down with booze?

Becky Cheatle is a rising star of Irish comedy, though her 50 years as a man got mixed reviews, much like the Star Wars prequels. In her new stand-up show, she hilariously explores her gender transition through the lens of her lifelong love of Star Wars.

Join Becky for a truly unique and moving journey through gender transition, childhood memories, and adult crisis. Jump to lightspeed with a show that’s as heartfelt as it is hilarious.

May the laughs be with you!

Developed at Scene + Heard.

Join very busy, very famous, international cabaret star Mark T Cox for a juicy hour of comedy, filth and pop bangers as he explores the joys and horrors of contemporary gay life in rural Ireland.

In his charmingly soft boy style, Mark shares tales of school scandals, secret affairs, and too many late night kisses in a Ford Fiesta. With original music and plenty of sing-along moments from pop icons - J Lo, Kylie and of course, The Corrs.

This is one for the gays, the girlies, and your newly woke Irish Mammy.

SIMMER is a creative incubator, providing a platform for developing projects with the potential to push the boundaries of contemporary performance making. This programme is

designed to nurture promising works for future editions of the Dublin Fringe Festival and other national and international touring opportunities.

Our inaugural year will feature a double bill of new work being developed by two exciting artists, Pea Dinneen and Kevin Keogh.

Once Off Productions presents,

Pea Dinneen:

Raising Her Voice

How do you raise a voice? How do you get a whole country to hear it when all it’s done so far is drown it out? Well, with 90s pop bangers adapted to fit a playful, subversive personal narrative about transgender liberation in the face of an uncaring system, OBVIOUSLY.

Join playwright and niche cabaret legend, Pea Dinneen, for this intimate work-inprogress showing as she sings her way through this powerful story about herself, her country and her voice.

+353 Presents:

The Revengers

Tragedy

This abridged version of Thomas Middleton’s 1606 play delves into the self-destructive masculine ideology of revenge through the lens of hip-hop and drill culture. It follows two main characters as they navigate their private and public relationships with revenge, lust, and shame, exploring traditional masculinity’s often self-imploding ideologies.

Performed by rappers with original music blending drill and classical orchestral styles, the show aims to unsettle and provide an emotive theatrical experience.

WEFT

*Language note: we use ‘people of the global majority’ in instances where we can’t be specific about ethnicity or background. We have worked with What If Experiment to review our processes and procedures though an anti-racist lens. Decolonising language and de-centring whiteness was a key component of that learning.

Weft is an artist support and audience development initiative established in 2021 by Dublin Fringe Festival with various key partners. It was created in response to the structural barriers faced by Black and global majority artists and audiences living in Ireland. The initial programme was funded through the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon Open Call initiative 2021. Since then, Weft has evolved to become a core strand of Dublin Fringe Festival’s year-round artist support programme, FRINGE LAB.

The Weft programme consists of two strands: Weft Studio and Weft Audience Club.

Weft Studio is an artist support and development programme focusing on talent development and network building for emerging and early career Black artists and artists of the global majority*. It looks to address elements of support and holistic understanding for Black artists and artists of the global majority early in their careers in Ireland. Weft Studio creates a space for artists to learn about their creative habits, develop their artistic skills, and lead in creating their own work on their terms. It interweaves individual artist supports with practical project development opportunities within a community of peers who understand what it is like to live and work in Ireland as a Black artist or artist of the global majority. This year’s Weft Studio was led by award-winning writer and creative producer Shannon Yee.

For more information about Weft Studio, please email Weft Studio Producer Shannon Yee at weft@fringefest.com.

Weft Audience Club seeks to introduce the work showcased during the festival to new Black and global majority audience members, offering free tickets to see up to seven shows across the festival programme, along with artist talks with the artists featured in the festival. For more information about Weft Audience Club, please email Weft Audience Club Coordinator at weftaudience@fringefest.com.

Work by past Weft Studio artists can be found on pages 14, 40 & 92.

This year’s Weft programme was funded by the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, in partnership with British Council Ireland and Community Foundation Ireland.
