POWER & PLEASURE — Ruth Mc Gowan, Festival Director
This programme in your hands is your invitation – see you there.
Put your coat on, rally your mates and let's go. Help create the kind of city that you want to live in. When our powers combine this September, we’ll deliver a Dublin disrupted by bold moves, radical artworks and unforgettable experiences that leave an after-glow.
Dublin Fringe Festival has an unwavering commitment to new voices and new work. These sixteen days offer an introduction to the inventors and mavericks whose work demands to be seen. Take a risk with us and stay intrepid. You’ll be rewarded with revelation, beauty and intimate encounters that linger long after the curtain falls.
Defiant delight, escapism and laughter shared among friends and strangers has a transformative power — that’s why our festival is in hot pursuit of pleasure. We’ve assembled a dazzling collection of mischief makers and craic czars to share art experiences that pulsate with joy and send you home starry-eyed.
This year the focus is on power: seizing it, sharing it, speaking truth to it. Power comes in many forms, not just wearing capes or carrying cash. We recognise the power in the quiet, the soft and the patient, along with the primal, the furious and the muscular.
Artists illuminate the otherwise invisible. Their creative visions electrify reality and allow us to soar above the mainstream. The imagined futures they unleash propel the world forward. They are the source, their valour activates the power in others. They’ve created urgent events in conversation with Dublin and Ireland today, sweet antidotes to the fast and standardised, hybrid forms that push the boundaries of performance and one-of-a-kind escapades that offer new perspectives on the city.
True originals, philosopher kings, witches, smart cookies, feminist giants, outlaws, originators, buzzers, upstarts and luminaries-in-waiting: welcome to Dublin Fringe Festival 2019. Join us as we follow the lead of the extraordinary artists within these pages.
NEW RITUALS
FRINGE LAB
A curatorial note
In this edition of Dublin Fringe Festival our icons are fats and femmes, our histories are myriad and our faith is multitudinous. It’s not the old Ireland but it’s not a new Ireland yet; we’re liminal, crepuscular — looking to a skyline where it could be dusk or dawn. The exceptional artists in this programme are inhabiting a cultural landscape scattered with relics, they’re reclaiming ritual, occupying faith and praying to new deities. Ghosts have been exhumed and are being welcomed to the table. These artists aren’t casting off our past, they’re repurposing it, divining it, using it as tea leaves. They’re establishing a bold new world, one where we victoriously clamour to tell the histories of all involved, where the doctrine is truth-telling, where mass is dancing ‘til your feet hurt and communion is catharsis. They’re establishing new rites, they’re mythologising the now. — Bee Sparks, Artistic Projects Manager

NINE WEEKS SEÁN KENNEDY
This is a story of love, vulnerability, connection and reclaiming lost power. When Seán discovered his mother was terminally ill, he travelled to Australia to bring her home. Things didn’t go as planned. He’s trapped between two worlds. These nine weeks changed them both forever. Classically trained tenor Seán Kennedy uses his voice to release the pressure. He celebrates his mother’s life, and all women that defy male oppression and abuse. Together with conductor Julie Shanley and her choral ensemble, they bring the sonorous performance world to life.

It was fairly recently that Cal Folger Day went to New York to make music. It was in 1958 that her great-step-aunt-in-law went to New York to find herself in a textile design career. Lots of people go to New York, in reality and in dreams: it’s the nexus of fantasy. So why wouldn’t decades dissolve when a cultfavourite street musician in a Viking hat, Moondog, crops up in two separate lives? Through music, movement, and verbatim interview material, enter NYC as an astral plane documenting both history and self.

One day when his electric rice cooker informed him that his meal was ready, artist Jaha Koo experienced a deep sense of isolation. “Golibmuwon” (고립무원) is an untranslatable Korean word expressing the feeling of helpless isolation. A major economic crisis in South Korea had a devastating impact on the young generation to which Jaha belongs. This show combines personal experience with political events and reflections on happiness, economic crises and death.

Romeo and Juliet: two households. A balcony. Baz Luhrmann, Dire Straits, the Junior Cert. Why is this story so ubiquitous? Why do we use it as a shorthand for romance when it’s about two teenagers and — spoiler alert — it doesn’t end well? Directed by Aoife Spillane-Hinks, all-star Megan Riordan performs an eclectic cabaret extravaganza on the nature of love, presence, consciousness, grace and acting as a vessel. WE ARE LIGHTNING! JOSEPH O’FARRELL (JOF) & SAM HALMARACK Performed by local Dublin musicians
You are invited to the final requiem for the last music joint left in town. Acclaimed artists Joseph O’Farrell (JOF) and Sam Halmarack combine theatre with the fist-pumping euphoria and power ballads of a stadium gig, in a darkly comical work that reflects on the importance of communal spaces where people can come together and express themselves. The Ringside Bar is transformed into a music venue on the brink of closure. A teen band, a brass band, a community choir and ageing rockers from Dublin join JOF’s drums and Sam’s guitar to mark and protest its demise, leading audiences through a strange ceremony and heartfelt celebration of how music shapes the lives of the people who play it. Join us for our last chance to come together and be saved by music. Please note: contains the use of smoke machines and strobe lighting.

THE NORTH IS NEXT DUBLIN FRINGE FESTIVAL, GCN & OUTBURST QUEER ARTS FESTIVAL
Dublin Fringe Festival and GCN have joined forces to commission a zine to spotlight and support the drive for queer and reproductive rights in Northern Ireland, in partnership with Outburst Queer Arts Festival, Belfast. It’s 2019. The 1.8 million people who live in Northern Ireland still don’t have marriage equality or access to abortion services. Their human rights have been encroached on for decades. Part care package, part activist artwork, this forum invites creators and thinkers from all over the island to illuminate a global blind-spot. This is a real story and it happened to me. The first solo show from Stephen Colfer, co-creator of Dreamgun (pictured above in 2009). With the help of his trusty projector and obsession with true crime podcasts, Stephen tells a true (minor) crime story about gaming addiction, short-term accommodation and death at sea. All events depicted in this show actually happened and there is proof. Hilarious proof.

‘I changed the world, just so you know.’ It’s June 2018. A post-Repeal world. Dawn no longer has to walk for miles knocking on doors, she just has to walk to Santiago. No one said it was easy but neither did anyone say that your toes might explode, which would’ve been nice to know. Written and performed by Miriam Needham and directed by Donal O'Kelly, this darkly funny solo show uses physical theatre storytelling and magical realism to explore activist burnout, loneliness, and disconnection.

On a slowly crashing plane, we invite you to consider what remains — the ghosts we have manifested, through data and plastic, by shedding our skin. In Irish mythology, a fetch is the ghost of a person still living. Plastic takes a thousand years to decompose, and my hour is almost come. Please go through my bin, read my browser history, and try to figure me out. This intimate new work for two audience members lies at the intersection between sculpture and performance.

We all have choice. We all have autonomy. But one wrong move can shift opinion. No one wants to be on the wrong side of history. The mob are out for blood. Who’s next? Joe was a really big deal. Before the video that turned the tide. Jack had a following too, but in a very different way. Cillian was just a kid. This play digs deep into the darkness of the online world in an attempt to put a human face on anonymous hate.

Siobhán is back in East Cork, fresh off the boat from London where her journalism career didn’t hit the dizzying heights she hoped it might. Back in the nest, she discovers her mother and cousin Mags have adopted new age spiritual practices to help cope with a death in the family. While worshipping at the altar of self-help, they try to encourage the deeply cynical and newly nihilistic Siobhán out of her slump. Playful, intense, poignant, irreverent; immerse yourself in an exploration of the roles of masculinity, queerness, MeToo and gender in our rapidly changing society. ON SPIRALS, PART 3 EDDIE PEAKE Commissioned by IMMA and presented in association with Dublin Fringe Festival
This is a new live work by artist Eddie Peake, commissioned by IMMA, as part of the exhibition Desire: A Revision from the 20th Century to the Digital Age. Looping motifs — sonic and danced — layered one over the other, purposely confounding and spasmodically synchronising with one another are presented in the form of a three-phased, non-linear narrative featuring four gold-painted protagonists. Spiralling choreographic patterns of movement and sound make manifest abstract phenomena such as depression, psychosis, obsession and desire. Performed by Emma Fisher, Sara Lupoli, Kieram Corrin Mitchell and Eddie Peake.

How far can the body be pushed before it pushes back? This dancer is primed for success — a flat in London, a flexible day job, trendy friends and the occasional gig go-go dancing. Her migraines are getting worse. But she just has to keep hustling. Any day now she’ll get her big break. If her breaking point doesn’t get there first. Told through theatre, dance, aerial and a healthy dose of self-deprecation. The truth is bubbling under the surface and she’s about to let it spill.

Have you ever chased a rainbow?
GAME THEORY We take fun very, VERY seriously. MOOP is Matter Out Of Place: it’s rubbish, trash… stuff from Somewhere Else. Five silent characters find increasingly hilarious and beautiful ways of playing with the strange (to them anyway) stuff that keeps appearing in their world. A physical theatre performance about curiosity, play and getting un-bored, this is a show for anyone who’s ever found more than one use for a stick. Let the games begin!
Or wondered what it would be like to stand in one? This interactive art installation invites you to take a walk inside a rainbow. Using prismatic light, you will experience the way the light shines through to create a canvas of colour. Pop on your white coat and step inside this magical space, where you can feel and touch the colours of the sky. An odyssey of a young Frenchman in Dublin. After hearing about the Bataclan attacks back in Paris, author and performer Louis Deslis heads into the night to find comfort. From Paris to Sandymount, via Burgundy, Workmans and the Tallaght Luas stop, with lots of joie de vivre (that’s French for craic), this is a poetic punk portrait of coming to terms with where you’re from and where you find yourself.

THEATRE
The patriarch has passed. A mother and daughter have a story to tell. One is comfortable existing, and the other is eager to be seen. And they have an audience to please. This new multifaceted performance deconstructs power and privilege, and challenges the representation of working class Dubliners on our stages. What happens when their catchy colloquialisms and unforgiving audacity are no longer funny? Written by Nadine Flynn, this new play interrogates what happens when the accent is no longer the punch-line.

An interdisciplinary performance, integrating song, sound and sculpture. Intergenerational trauma is both genetic and behavioural, it is embodied, and inherited. We sometimes feel it in our spirit and move in step with its endless echo, but it finds its roots in story. Stories passed down from parent to child, embodied memory, whispers of hardships past and present. With each retelling, they are shaped to serve a different purpose, and the mouth of each re-teller carves pain differently.

ABOUT US THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! We wanted Fringe 2019 to deliver a Dublin disrupted by bold moves, radical artworks and unforgettable experiences that leave an after-glow. That wouldn’t be possible without the devotion and determination of the upstarts, pioneers and champions who came on this adventure with us. Our deepest thanks to the staff, technicians, volunteers, patrons, partners, board members, interns, stakeholders, venues, funders, sponsors, judges, friends and family who combined their powers to create the magical force of Fringe. Special thanks to icon and friend Kate Lennon for her vital contribution to Fringe 2019. Fringe has been a launchpad, a trampoline, a safety net, and a home to thousands of artists since 1995. We would like to take a moment in our 25th year to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has kept the flame burning brightly over the years. Thanks to Aisling O’Brien for seven amazing years of service, now flying it on her own. Special shout out to the incomparable Marcus Costello and the brilliant Conleth Teevan who have brought their time and their talents to Dublin Fringe Festival for over a decade. Thank you to every single Fringe audience member — we love and appreciate your curiosity, passion and sense of adventure! Finally, to the 600+ artists whose work is contained within these pages — the city is yours. Thank you for your courage and your craft. You are our heroes. Take a look at the complete list of angels and allies who fuel Fringe at fringefest.com.
