Welcome to Dublin Fringe Festival. 430 artists are set to overrun the city with unmissable art experiences for 16 days and nights. They’re reflecting. They’re raging. They’re ready to party. Expect spit-takes, strangeness and take-it-straight-to-the-group-chat scenes as their incandescent ideas come to life. This year’s festival celebrates the glorious, the curious and the improbable. From the top of the sky-line’s tallest buildings, to the peace of your bathtub at home, in streetside confession boxes and on offroad bus tours, our 2022 programme is packed with performances that will shift your perspective and offer you release. We’re amplifying the artists who create space for communal reflection and shared laughter. We’re shining a spotlight on the weird, the hyper-local and those who forge their own path. We’re introducing the brightest new talent – more than half of the artists between these pages are presenting work at the festival for the very first time. Join us in prizing togetherness and truth, beauty and defiance, silliness and play with 586 performances in 27 venues, all made with love and grit by some of the most courageous artists we know. Breathe out and give in to the plethora of ideas at play. These artists are expunging hidden pasts, taking us to not-so distant futures and vitally, viscerally, luxuriating in the now. Some powers have been hard won and these artists are holding space for remembrance – of the small, the slow, and the togetherness of it all. This year’s artists are issuing a reminder to exist urgently, to dance uproariously and to embrace the full breadth of your inner oddities. WAKE lifts the veil between worlds, where club culture meets Irish tradition in an exquisite frenzy of ritual, rave, grief and joy; conjuring up the spirits of the good times, of the marginalised, of everything that’s been and gone, toasting yesterday’s passing as we dream up tomorrow, together. This glittering Irish Pop-wake embraces the ecstasy of letting go, the wild abandon of the all-nighter and the beauty of transformation in a rabble-rousing night of gut-punching theatre, soaring spoken word, stomping beats and outrageous circus that will leave us dancing into the dawn.

Dublin’s sharpest drag artists and trans comedians put the alt-right through the ringer in a biting satire of a media environment that not only enables hate speech, but cheers it on. No faux-outrage too faux, no dog-whistle too shrill, no moral panic too panicky. Conspiracy theories with better contour: fake news has never looked this fabulous and mass hysteria has never been this, well, hysterical. Any familiar (and litigious) Irish faces are entirely coincidental.

A love letter to the queers, the weirdos, the trailblazers, the night-walkers. First part show, second part club night together an exploration of identity through memories from queer and club spaces. A storytelling of a night out, told through dance, runway, spoken-word and lip-sync, this performance transforms into a club night. This sacred space becomes a shared experience with the audience, creating memories together while sustaining the clubbing community and its beauty.

Part-narrative and part-meditation, this is a 30-minute sound piece for audiences to listen to in the bath along with an experience pack of resources to change their physical environment, connecting closely with their personal atmosphere and relationship with their bodies. Delving into the possible outcomes of rising temperatures and the correlation between social and climate justice, this performance experience continues Young’s investigation into water as a key character in our collective conversations on climate justice.

An exclusive night-time adventure in the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin. This meditative and immersive night-walk will guide you through a series of light and sound installations, exploring Dublin’s iconic Botanic Gardens as you have never seen them before. Responding to our relationship with the natural world, these intimate artworks explore the cultural remnants humans have created through our love of nature. Empty bird cages, a playful song, the insides of cuckoo clocks and fragments from botanical dictionaries are intertwined, telling their story through unforgettable sound and light installations in the serene surroundings of the gardens after dark. This is one artist’s attempt to make sense of a world, in which a passion for nature is mixed with an anxiety for its future.

Facilitated by an unqualified contemporary survivalist, the school’s syllabus revises and scraps outdated forms of survivalism with the aim of (re)imagining new ways of living. Departing from archaic survivalist endeavours that promise not improvement but rather endless struggle, this coach trip will lead you through a journey of queer, ecological and abolitionist coalitions which have paved pathways for thriving rather than just surviving. So why not buckle-up and enjoy the ride. Who knows, by the end of this 90-minute crash course, you too may graduate as an unqualified contemporary survivalist!

Two sisters on a graveyard jaunt at sunrise. R, the prodigal child returned from NYC with a good job. E, the older sister, an artist without work who splits her time between self-doubt and conviction. They coffee before work these days - sip from takeaway receptacles and do laps of the dead. What does it mean to be an artist who no longer makes art? Why are younger sisters always so infuriatingly competent, and what is it about graveyards that gives us such solace? This artist-led audio experience tackles these questions as you coffee and walk around one of Dublin’s hidden gem parks.

An outdoor meandering city project dedicated to Dublin’s (sea)gulls. In an ambitious participatory project, an environmental artist collaborates with a squabble of gulls, artists, scientists and locals to craft a bird’s-eye view of the city. A fizzy experiment that glides between performance, ornithology and empathy. Expect homemade beaks, sound, outdoor walking and a sideways look at the migration of gulls to cities. Dion can’t find the perfect man, so he decides to create his own. With the rules of manhood colliding with Dion’s own world view, he explores what it means to be a man in an increasingly alt-right world and how he (they?) might not be a man at all. A half-serious, half-comedic, mostly absurd love letter to the femme queers shedding an identity and realising one’s own place might be outside the gender binary. That, and a wee sprinkle of how all of this could lead to fascism.

Put on your headset and journey through dangerous waters and new frontiers to find sanctuary. In this radical new approach to opera, we strive to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past – the scorch and burn approach to living in this world.

WEFT IS AN 18-MONTH TALENT-DEVELOPMENT AND NETWORK-BUILDING PROJECT FOR EARLY CAREER BLACK ARTISTS AND ARTISTS OF COLOUR MORE BROADLY IN IRELAND. OVER THE LAST YEAR, THIS LANDMARK BODY OF WORK HAS RESULTED IN NEW CONNECTIONS, NEW IDEAS AND IMPACTFUL DIALOGUE. The Weft Studio Group was an initiative for racialised artists who wanted to make their own work on their own terms. Together with facilitator Dylan Coburn Gray, these 13 artists - of different disciplines but equal talent, rigour, promise - shared skills with one another; presented work-in-progress to a peer audience; took in shows in London and Dublin that were provocative foils to the artists’ own work. You can find work by four of the Weft Studio Artists in this year’s festival programme – see pages 25, 43, 57 and 63. This is not the end of the Weft Studio - it’s a set of evolving partnerships. We look forward to more ideas born in this Weft Studio Group featuring in future editions of Dublin Fringe Festival. Visionary artists and organisers Origins Eile moved into Fringe HQ as our first ever FRINGE LAB Associate Company. They are working across the year to create meaningful opportunities for networking, collaboration and creative growth, facilitating free events and workshops while also developing their organisation through a number of international mentorships. Weft brought heroes Hot Brown Honey back to Ireland! This summer they are assembling an extraordinary crew of Femme Black artists and Artists of Colour to create Hive City Legacy: Dublin Chapter. (A Musical) is a moving, heart-warming tale of lost identity and one musician’s journey to reclaim herself and her passion for life. In partnership with Pavilion Theatre, Dún Laoghaire. Shiva R Joyce is a writer and printmaker, currently focusing on classical poetry, street art and digital relief prints to capture BrownSkinIslanderGal realities across the Antipodes and Ireland. She is working on a project entitled Cartography of otHER, which entails gathering markers for the navigation of otHERing. In partnership with Melbourne Fringe Festival Colm McCready is a theatre and film-maker who graduated from Mountview, Lyric Drama Studio and QUB. Scaredy Fat is a morbidly monstrous body horror disco charting Colm’s journey to discovering his body... discovering how bloody terrifying it is. Using video, lip-synching and mess, the play dissects the beauty of big boys, rural queerness and campy horror films. In partnership with The MAC, Belfast. WAR/WAR/WAR is a theatre-making collective led by CoDirectors Aoife Delany Reade and Anna Doyle. Aoife creates audience-centric works, employing an expanded notion of theatre to invite participants to engage with their surroundings and individual capacities to enact powerful micro-change. Anna (they/she) writes expressionistic, character-driven work, showcasing female talent and experience. Their plays have premiered internationally; from Galway to Manchester to New York. Organised by Irish Theatre Institute (ITI), Information Toolbox attracts presenters from across Ireland and brings hand-picked guests from international organisations together for a morning of networking with Irish artists. How it works You must register to attend. In advance you will be given a timetable of one-to-one meetings. You’ll have the chance to meet programmers and presenters, pitch your show to venues and festivals and build your network of connections at home and internationally. Through the wild ride of the past two years some positives have come to the surface, including a new focus for many artists around innovation in digital practice. We have partnered with our friends on the other side of the world, Melbourne Fringe Festival, to share some of the most ambitious work from Ireland and Australia that has been created specifically for digital presentation. Bewley’s Café Theatre Little Gem Award The most exciting show that’s under 60 minutes with a handsome prize: a two-week run at Bewley’s Café Theatre and €2000 for the remount.
Best Design Outstanding lighting, sound, scenic, projection, costume or overall design. Best Performers Two of this year’s brightest stars will take home this accolade. Best Ensemble The standout ensemble – the heartbeat of a show. Judge’s Choice Awards Three awards to acknowledge something that defies categorization but must be recognised for its brilliance. Fishamble New Writing Award Awarded to an emerging Irish (or Irelandbased) writer for a new play. The award includes dramaturgical support by Fishamble: The New Play Company. First Fortnight Award The winner will be invited to perform at the First Fortnight festival in January 2023.
Next Stage Wild Card A bursary to be part of the Next Stage at Dublin Theatre Festival with Theatre Forum. Axis Green Arts Award axis Ballymun will offer a cash prize of €1000 as well as targeted support for future productions to help the planning and delivery of environmentally aware work.
Spirit of Wit: Moira Brady Averill Award A unique award for an artist willing to take risks and whose work defies categorisation with bold and unconventional material. In memory of Moira Brady Averill, who had the power to transform space and thought through alchemical wit. The award comes with a monetary prize and framed illustration by artist Walker Mettling. Radical Spirit Co-presented by Dublin Fringe Festival and Project Arts Centre. This commissioning award is for an Irish artist dedicated to making bold, contemporary work which embodies the radical spirit of both Fringe and Project. The George Fitzmaurice Award This award will connect an experimental artist with an original voice with St John’s Theatre, Listowel via a two week residency. The prize includes a €1500 bursary, workspace and travel/ accommodation.
