WELCOME DUBLIN FRINGE TO

DEAR FRINGE-GOER, Fuelled by the low glow of the shining possible, we have lovingly set the stage for artists to innovate for the times. This September, they will create a constellation of performance experiments that forge new pathways to shared experience. THIS IS A STATEMENT OF INTENT. A month is a long time in 2020, which means plans might change between going to print and closing night. Together with some of the finest colleagues and partners in the country, we’re planning with care, humility and rigorous adherence to government guidelines. The safety of artists, audiences and staff is paramount in every decision we make. No matter what, Fringe will find a way to reach you with experiences in digital space, in the outdoors, in the post and back in beloved Dublin venues. THIS IS AN ACT OF FAITH. We want the future of the arts to be defined by artists. The valiant artists between these pages saw the possibilities in the parameters. Let’s follow the torchlight of their undeniable ideas to emerge somewhere new. In a time where everything feels temporary, art connects us to the eternal. We can’t wait for you to see what they have dreamed into being.

FESTIVAL PILOT LIGHT EDI TION

2020:

— RUTH MCGOWAN, FESTI VAL DIRECTOR

THIS IS A DOCUMENT OF COURAGE. The fight for this festival has been hard won. We’re staying devoted to artistic risk, active spectatorship and shared moments in time. We’re not giving up on togetherness — each of these unique projects need you, intrepid audience member, in order to come to life. All being well, we’ll see you there. We’ll share laughs, exchange epiphanies, wave from across the theatre just as the lights go down. All being otherwise, we’ll see you on the internet, we’ll hear you on the airwaves, we’ll vibe together on our respective kitchen dancefloors. Come what may, there are four indelible truths about Dublin Fringe Festival 2020: Pilot Light Edition.

1. ART WILL BE MADE. 2. JOY WILL BE FELT. 3. NEW EX PERIENCES WILL BE SHARED. 4. THIS FESTI VAL WILL BE ONE FOR THE HISTORY BOOK S. YOU’ LL WANT TO SAY YOU WERE THERE. K EEP HER LI T

FORWARD FOCUS

WILL I SEE YOU THERE

THEATRE, SOUND ART, LIVE ART

This is a forward-focused festival, with an emphasis on keeping the ever-industrious buzz of artists at work alight. We have learned the urgency of the immediate and the gratification of the slow burn: there is power in the here and now, there is strength in the solidarity created through months of hard graft. This year we’re championing 50 artists to continue crafting and coalescing their big ideas through an ongoing FRINGE LAB artist support programme. It’s time to catch momentum, to keep it going, to find a way through this, to scheme a thousand mini-utopias and then be ready to make them so (when the time is right!). Some things remain unchanged. Artists have always known how to shape the way forward in uncertain times. Dublin Fringe Festival will always have their backs. — Bee Sparks, Artistic Projects Manager

UTOPIA OR BUST

In January, we issued a curatorial call out asking for work in response to the theme Utopias & Uprisings. Little did we know how soon the task of reimagining the world would become so achingly, urgently real. Together with Centre Culturel Irlandais, Dublin Fringe Festival has commissioned three sets of trailblazing, peerless Irish artists to write and share their manifesto for the new era they want to usher in.

MANIFESTOS FOR A NEW ERA

This chapter is authored, curated and designed by Glitter HOLE, WeAreGriot and gender.RIP — some of the artists to whom we want to entrust the future. For the next 12 pages, you are in their capable hands. We are investing in their visions through bespoke residency support for their artistic practice and company development from FRINGE LAB and Centre Culturel Irlandais in winter 2020.

A co-commission from Dublin Fringe Festival and Centre Culturel Irlandais. Supported by Maria Luisa Preisser Terán.

Look out for their manifestos, displayed on the streets of Dublin and Paris, from Saturday 5 to Sunday 20 September.

GENDER.RIP gender.RIP is a collaboration between Dámhín McKeown, Alber Saborío, Ríon Murphy and a loosely associated collection of gender killers based in Dublin. We are a transled art collective. NOW

AN AVANT-GARDE PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTER

WE’RE Dublin Digital Radio

TALKING FROM THE VOICES YOU NEED 46

What is the role of a modern public service broadcaster? Who is it serving? How can we react to a failing mainstream media and better serve our nation? Through performances, interactive discussions and musical reflections, ddr. seeks to create an experimental public broadcaster, taking residence in Georgian Dublin while seeking to address a new, national public.

URGENT AND IMMEDIATE CONVERSATIONS

For one day only, Dublin Digital Radio is creating an avant-garde public service broadcaster.

TO HEAR.

Over the course of this creative symposium, we’ll seek your ideas, hear from otherwise unheard voices and discuss new ways of producing content to service the public of the future. Venue Irish Georgian Society Performance 5 September, 17:00, €15 Duration 150 mins Developed with the support of Dublin Fringe Festival and DCC Heritage. Supported by The Digital Hub, Official Digital Partner of Dublin Fringe Festival. Design: Emma Conway

DESTINY:

A CONSTELLATION OF QUEER AFROFUTURIST VISIONS Origins Eile A Dublin Fringe Festival Commission

A series of events for Queer Black celestial kinfolk. A four-part decolonial re-imagining that honours a rich ancestry of Black and Queer Afrofuturist visionaries, Origins Eile (OE) invites you to join us as we explore Queerness, Blackness and the cosmos. Fellow QTIBPOC time-travellers and shapeshifters, lets come together to traverse the virtual and physical realms and transcend the bounds of white cis hetero capitalist patriarchy to generate new visions of Black Queer transformation and liberation. OUTER SPACE VS INNER SPACE This programme brings our community on a journey from events that probe the unknown, conceptual, and existential ‘outer space’ to events that hone in on the more familiar, personal, and intimate ‘inner space’.

OUTER SPACE

INNER SPACE

DIVINATION

CONGREGATION

OE present a multi-media collection of Queer Afrofuturist creative work in a re-visioned virtual ‘gallery’ space. Curated through an open submissions process. Cosmic Creation | Celestial Celebration | Collage Exhibition runs 5 - 20 September Opening party, Your Place, Saturday 5 September, 19:00 with DJ set by Batti Mamzelle.

QUEER AFRO FUTURES

A panel discussion with some of our Queer Black heroes. Join us as we are guided through thought constellations, and collectively meditate on the liberatory and transformative potential of Queer Afrofuturism as an imaginative framework. Critical Perspectives | Consciousness Your Place, Saturday 12 September, 19:00

We never wanted a seat at their table, and so we continue to build our own. Come join us for a hosted dinner around OE’s table for some Black Queer soul-body nourishment. Care | Congregation | Connectedness Hen’s Teeth, Sunday 20 September, 19:00

PROPAGATION

OE has compiled a Queer and Black Afrofuturist reading list for all our celestial babes. Explore in your own time from your own comfort zone, for your healing, your expansion, your inner world and personal growth. Consciousness | Cultivation | Continuation For full event details see fringefest.com.

Origins Eile events ALWAYS centre Queer Black audiences and are for and by them. All audiences are invited to attend the online panel discussion, tickets are €12 for white folx and *BIPOC attendees are free. 48 CULINARY ART, VISUAL ART, LECTURE PERFORMANCE

MAD, BAD & DANGEROUS

NETWORK & SHOWCASE 15TH ANNUAL INFORMATION TOOLBOX Things are very different this year. But… networking and promoting your work are just as important as ever… it just has to be done differently. ITI will assist artists and companies to make connections and showcase their work to national and international programmers, presenters and festivals — ONLINE. Information Toolbox, for the 15th consecutive year, will offer the space for artists and companies presenting work in Dublin Fringe 2020 (including those who have postponed until 2021) to engage with programmers, presenters and potential collaborators

from across Ireland and from abroad. See what you have in common; talk about the challenges of making and presenting work in a post-COVID-19 world; learn from each other; start to build connections and plan for working in new or adjusted ways. Like most people we are still working on the logistics and format for our event, registration opens late August. Further details including registration will be available on fringefest.com or irishtheatreinstitute.ie Information Toolbox is supported by the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, Culture Ireland and Dublin City Council.

Up Up Up & Copper Alley A series of interviews between influential Irish women over 70. These women have been blazing trails for 50 years. They were moving mountains long before hashtags. The relationship that intersects age, gender and public space has never been so fraught. The need to see, hear and prioritise older people has been rendered explicitly visible. They are the ‘difficult’ women, the brass necks, the sharp, the fearless: the mad, bad and dangerous. Featuring Lelia Doolan, Bernadette McAliskey and Dervla Murphy.

A HUGE THANK YOU To all the artists, staff, technicians, patrons, partners, stakeholders, venues, funders, sponsors, friends and family who have banded together to make the festival happen in a uniquely challenging year for our sector. The cooperation and camaraderie that has enabled us to make a festival mid-pandemic has been heartening and healing. To our core funders the Arts Council, Dublin City Council and our Principal Patron, Ballymore, thank you for backing our vision every step of the way. Thank you to the artists. In our curatorial callout in January, we said ‘art is a powertool’. Little did we know how deep you would have to dig. Thank you for your courage and your craft. You are our heroes. It’s a privilege to watch you work. Sincere thanks to every single intrepid audience member for your curiosity, passion and belief in the power of art and in our community. We want to (but definitely won’t!) give you a MASSIVE hug for picking up this brochure, for caring about Fringe and for supporting Irish artists.

Deepest thanks and huge respect to the staff of Dublin Fringe Festival. The fight to make this festival was hard won. The impossible was made possible by the devotion, grit and good humour of the experts and true believers on Team Fringe listed here. A million thanks wouldn’t cover it. You have done phenomenal work and are a force for good. Thank you to the Fringe board for your belief and your counsel. Thank you Shannon Lacek and Chopper Stepe for everything you have done for Dublin Fringe. This festival was made in childhood bedrooms and sub-optimal box rooms, across the country and the continent and over dodgy wifi. It was built and dismantled on post-its, reimagined on endless spreadsheets, in lonely and challenging times. We did it all to signify that art is a necessity in any world worth living in.
