Welcome! Dublin Fringe Festival 2017 is a heartstopper. An uproarious sixteen days of thrilling, provocative events that will consume and inspire the city. Bursting with works of conscience and consequence, expect the pure, the empowered and the wild, brought to you by hundreds of messers, leaders, dreamboats and deep-thinkers who will shake-up your September. It’s a complete city take over. We’re bringing you Fringe experiences in more postcodes than ever, lighting up and animating new sites. And lots of it is free! On offer are some special Fringe-fuelled international collaborations between Irish artists and their Canadian counterparts. Trophy by STO Union (Ottawa/Gatineau) creates a glowing pop-up tent city on Barnardo Square for the festival’s opening weekend. Inside, Dublin’s Change of Address reveal moments in their 02

lives where everything changed. Town Choir from Theatre Replacement (Vancouver) and Tonnta (Dublin) transforms notable writers’ observations on the city into choral song with a wry twist. We want to add phenomenal artistic experiences to your memory maps of Dublin. This edition is gritty and ambitious. It’s taking stock of the world around us, propelling us forward. We are right in the fire because that’s where the world is. You want grit? Look no further than Lucy McCormick (London)’s Triple Threat, her megalomaniac one-woman (+ Girl Squad) retelling of the New Testament - where she stars in every ecclesiastic, fantastic role. Leading Italian company Motus (Rimini) serves up their sensational MDLSX. Shaped like a VJ/DJ set, it’s an explosion of memoir and gender fluidity featuring one of the most

ferocious performances you’ll ever see. Both of these launch Neighbours — international disruptions from Fringe and Project; a brand new partnership that brings Dublin some of the best of the world stage. Add to that Fringe and the Abbey’s co-presentation of Ivan Coyote’s Tomboy Survival Guide (Vancouver) - a blissful campfire sesh of fearless songs and stories on gender you’ll want to gather around. One of Brazil’s hottest young theatre companies, Grupo Tripé makes their international debut at Fringe with Entre Quartos (Within Rooms), a visceral take on the messy lives and loves of 20-somethings in Brasília. Irish artists are calling the nation to account. Grace Dyas (THEATREclub) and Emma Fraser (NINE CROWS) create a waiting room that holds an archive of testimonies from women who have travelled to access abortion services, asking them what was different because they were NOT AT HOME. Junk Ensemble grapples with violence and PTSD as experienced by Ireland’s military with Soldier Still. Headlines, back-room whispers and unspoken myths from all corners of the island inspire artists from Belfast, Carlow, Donegal, Dublin, Galway, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Roscommon, Waterford and a whopping ten of ‘em from Cork! Fear not, thrill-seekers and craic-hounds: the pursuit of pleasure is still at the heart of the festival. Loosysmokes takes over one of the last standing warehouses of the Docklands for nine nights of incredible aerial circus and inky performance art. After their deliciously nightmarish turn in Pheonix Park, this is one not to miss. NEON Western by Cork’s Conflicted Theatre and Peter Power transforms the Samuel Beckett Theatre into a saloon with a rave twist. Homebeat brings Panorama Bar to D-Light with electronica wizard Edward. Mavens of magnificence, Film Fatale electrify Liberty Hall with a glittering cabaret extravaganza. Fried Plantains Collective serve up BLACK JAM; a knees-up night of the best of punk and hip-hop from the African diaspora with legends Big Joanie as headliners. See yis’ there, yeah?

Fringe makes its momentous first foray onto the Abbey Stage with Foil Arms & Hog’s brand new show OinK. If comedy is what you’re after, Alison Spittle, Conor O’Toole and Davey Reilly make much-anticipated returns and Pajama Men’s Shenoah Allen premieres a new solo about a man transforming into a truck (gas). Be sure to catch red-hot Fringe debuts from artists you’ll want to know including Jessie Doyle, Luke Casserly, Hannah Mamalis, Sahar Ali, Erin McGathy and Sugar Coat Theatre Company and many more new voices. Did we mention our first-ever Young Radicals: Fringe for Kids? Co-presented with Collapsing Horse, this line up features breakout new shows from LORDS OF STRUT & THISISPOPBABY, Eccles Theatre Group; Cobra’s Quest, a free podcast produced by 7-year old Cadhla and her dad; international hit for under-fours, Whoosh!; and a very special Young Hearts Run Free featuring teen bands and Dublin’s glitterati in a gig for ages 13 and up. Walk through a pop-up city of stories. Comprised of a cluster of tents, Trophy lights up Barnardo Square. Inside each tent, encounter a person who tells the true story of a moment in their life when everything changed. Move through the city of stories, visit as many tents as you feel drawn to. The installation’s evolution is determined by your actions. As the day passes, the tents transform into multi-coloured structures covered in stories of change. Trophy is a living monument to the experiences that make up our lives and a compelling conversation about change. In this special-to-Fringe presentation, STO Union and Change of Address join forces to give a local voice to a powerful Canadian concept. In different locations, two writers type out observations of the world unfolding around them. In that same moment, a town choir receives these observations via a large screen and sings them out to the public. Drawing on patterns of relaying information that mirror Twitter or Facebook, Town Choir treats everyday considerations as the news. Intimate and minute details are transmitted through the ether and then filtered through the live body in an epic choral declaration. Theatre Replacement builds performances that react to contemporary existence. It reflects a concern with creating innovative new forms for worldwide audiences.

Post-popular prodigy Lucy McCormick and her Girl Squad present a trashstep-dubpunk morality play for the modern world. Casting herself in all the main roles, Lucy will attempt to re-connect to her own moral conscience by re-enacting the New Testament via a Nu-wave holy trinity of dance, power ballads and performance art. With trademark absurdism and enthusiasm, Lucy puts her best foot forward in the face of existential deadlock. In this hour long show Lucy invites you to join her in airing out some festering dirty laundry. Inspired by East London’s queers, queens, squatters and strikers – come to the real Royal Variety. Levin & Levin BrokenCrow

The story of Ida and Bubbie, escapees from the Russian pogroms of the early 1900s. Dressed as boys to save their lives, the girls eventually become Europe’s most famous male impersonators. But on the night of their Broadway debut, disaster strikes and the Levins are forced to question everything they ever thought about everything they ever knew. Why Won’t You Have Sex With Me? Louise Bruton

A colourful exploration of sex and disability. Written by wheelchair user, disability activist and journalist Louise Bruton, this show is a response to those who think that disabled people aren’t getting any. She turns the table on non-disabled people as she tries to figure out why they think disabled people are sexless beings. Dating is a battlefield for us all but Why Won’t You Have Sex With Me? explores the challenges and attitudes that disabled people encounter along the way. It will make you laugh, make you cry and maybe you’ll get the ride.

The Egg is a Lonely Hunter Hannah Mamalis

Sophie works in a shop. She suffers from an irrational fear of eggs. Her nipples are behaving strangely and a black hole has appeared in her neighbourhood that could be / probably is a pervert. While precocious eight year olds and prophetic animals lurk around every corner, her dreams and reality begin to blur beyond comprehension or control. Former children and regular eaters Foil Arms & Hog are back with the Irish premiere of their new show at Ireland’s national theatre. OinK is a fast paced sketch show featuring a collection of songs for the elderly, a baggage handler’s interpretive dance and a shop that naively sells only balaclavas. The show has yet to be reviewed but when it is, it will be “utterly spellbinding” and “a triumph”. Best known for their YouTube videos (50 million online hits), their live show is what they’re most proud of. They’ve sold-out every year at Fringe since 2012, a run that must surely end, but hopefully not this year.

Talk Real Fine, Just Like a Lady Amanda Coogan and Dublin Theatre of the Deaf

Amanda Coogan and Dublin Theatre of the Deaf make a welcome return to Fringe this year in a new work that will appropriate Teresa Deevy’s play The King of Spain’s Daughter. Taking Deevy’s deafness as their ignition point, this new work will contextualise Deevy’s script within the cultural perspective of the deaf community in Ireland. Using Irish Sign language, and particularly women’s sign, as a choreographic tool the company will inhabit the Peacock in a visually stunning immersive performance. Amanda’s work has been described by Artforum as “performance art at its best” and The Irish Times described Coogan’s 2014 collaboration with DTD as “a quiet, beautiful spectacle and an intriguing collaboration.”

The Assassination of Pope Urban II James Moran

An experimental comedy show about the nightmarish life and brutal death of Pope Urban II. Born a runt, Urban II lived with a wasting disease of the body and spirit that has been eradicated by modern medicine. After being born and raised in a graveyard by friendly ghouls and dead bodies he went to the Vatican where he was elected Pope in 1088. Eleven years later he was abducted and murdered by visitors from a distant planet. Using his diaries as reference, James Moran shines a light on Pope Urban II’s innermost thoughts through live performance, script readings and lecture from the pulpit.

Who are women? And what have they been doing all this time? Nothing like a primary source to answer this query. Nothing like a primary source chopped, screwed, and stuck over a spliced choral excerpt of a Cecil Sharp folksong. Part gig, part theatre, part documentary, this verbatim pop-opera exhumes its singing ghosts from the transcript of a 2002 RTÉ interview with Anne (aged 90) and Catherine (aged 88), who were raised by their grandmother Lady Augusta Gregory in Galway. This tuneful séance is less of a celebrity sighting and more of an automatic drawing spectacle.

Using a portable cassette tape recorder, he recorded 15 hours of stories about leprechauns, aliens and lonely pharmacists; absurdist political satire and musings on life, love and death. In this production Paddy’s granddaughter, Emma O’Grady, examines the fractured and fragile personas we present to the world, who we might be behind them and who we could be instead. This is a piece about emotional inheritance and grief for wasted creativity that serves as both a tribute and a warning.

FRINGE LAB was used by over 200 companies for 6,000+ hours in the last year. Dublin Fringe Festival Awards 2017 Fringe Awards recognise, reward and celebrate the hard work and talent on display in the festival each year. Annually hundreds of artists bring their intelligence, heart, vision and drive to projects at the festival. They inspire us. The Awards honour and acknowledge some of the stand-outs in this year’s festival. Over 600 artists are part of the 23rd edition of Dublin Fringe Festival. Their determination, ambition, hard work and creativity is thrilling. We want to celebrate these makers and their incredible talent. We’re thrilled to introduce two prestigious new Awards this year.

NEW AWARDS The Georganne Aldrich Heller Award offers a ground-breaking festival creator a monetary prize and a bursary to go towards that artist working in New York – either making a research and networking visit, attending an artist residency or going towards a tour. Creating a valuable connection for an Irish artist with the New York scene, the winner will be championed by Ms Heller, a stalwart friend of Irish and American theatre. It’s an honour to introduce another new award – Spirit of Wit. Presented in memory of Moira Brady Averill. Moira had the power to transform space and thought through alchemical wit. We want to this year recognise her kindred spirits. With humour at its core, Spirit of Wit also includes the equivocal characteristics of her creative and performative power. The 2017 award will be presented by Gareth Averill and Maeve Stone in partnership with Dublin Fringe Festival.

Bewley’s Café Theatre Little Gem Award The most exciting show that’s under 60 minutes with a handsome prize: a twoweek run at Bewley’s Café Theatre and €2,000 for the remount. Spirit of Fringe, Spirit of Project Award Co-presented by Dublin Fringe Festival and Project Arts Centre. An Irish artist dedicated to making bold contemporary work and who embodies the spirit of Fringe and Project.
