Welcome! Dublin Fringe Festival 2017 is a heartstopper. An uproarious sixteen days of thrilling, provocative events that will consume and inspire the city. Bursting with works of conscience and consequence, expect the pure, the empowered and the wild, brought to you by hundreds of messers, leaders, dreamboats and deep-thinkers who will shake-up your September. It’s a complete city take over. We’re bringing you Fringe experiences in more postcodes than ever, lighting up and animating new sites. And lots of it is free! On offer are some special Fringe-fuelled international collaborations between Irish artists and their Canadian counterparts. Trophy by STO Union (Ottawa/Gatineau) creates a glowing pop-up tent city on Barnardo Square for the festival’s opening weekend. Inside, Dublin’s Change of Address reveal moments in their 02

lives where everything changed. Town Choir from Theatre Replacement (Vancouver) and Tonnta (Dublin) transforms notable writers’ observations on the city into choral song with a wry twist. We want to add phenomenal artistic experiences to your memory maps of Dublin. This edition is gritty and ambitious. It’s taking stock of the world around us, propelling us forward. We are right in the fire because that’s where the world is. You want grit? Look no further than Lucy McCormick (London)’s Triple Threat, her megalomaniac one-woman (+ Girl Squad) retelling of the New Testament - where she stars in every ecclesiastic, fantastic role. Leading Italian company Motus (Rimini) serves up their sensational MDLSX. Shaped like a VJ/DJ set, it’s an explosion of memoir and gender fluidity featuring one of the most

ferocious performances you’ll ever see. Both of these launch Neighbours — international disruptions from Fringe and Project; a brand new partnership that brings Dublin some of the best of the world stage. Add to that Fringe and the Abbey’s co-presentation of Ivan Coyote’s Tomboy Survival Guide (Vancouver) - a blissful campfire sesh of fearless songs and stories on gender you’ll want to gather around. One of Brazil’s hottest young theatre companies, Grupo Tripé makes their international debut at Fringe with Entre Quartos (Within Rooms), a visceral take on the messy lives and loves of 20-somethings in Brasília. Irish artists are calling the nation to account. Grace Dyas (THEATREclub) and Emma Fraser (NINE CROWS) create a waiting room that holds an archive of testimonies from women who have travelled to access abortion services, asking them what was different because they were NOT AT HOME. Junk Ensemble grapples with violence and PTSD as experienced by Ireland’s military with Soldier Still. Headlines, back-room whispers and unspoken myths from all corners of the island inspire artists from Belfast, Carlow, Donegal, Dublin, Galway, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Roscommon, Waterford and a whopping ten of ‘em from Cork! Fear not, thrill-seekers and craic-hounds: the pursuit of pleasure is still at the heart of the festival. Loosysmokes takes over one of the last standing warehouses of the Docklands for nine nights of incredible aerial circus and inky performance art. After their deliciously nightmarish turn in Pheonix Park, this is one not to miss. NEON Western by Cork’s Conflicted Theatre and Peter Power transforms the Samuel Beckett Theatre into a saloon with a rave twist. Homebeat brings Panorama Bar to D-Light with electronica wizard Edward. Mavens of magnificence, Film Fatale electrify Liberty Hall with a glittering cabaret extravaganza. Fried Plantains Collective serve up BLACK JAM; a knees-up night of the best of punk and hip-hop from the African diaspora with legends Big Joanie as headliners. See yis’ there, yeah?

Fringe makes its momentous first foray onto the Abbey Stage with Foil Arms & Hog’s brand new show OinK. If comedy is what you’re after, Alison Spittle, Conor O’Toole and Davey Reilly make much-anticipated returns and Pajama Men’s Shenoah Allen premieres a new solo about a man transforming into a truck (gas). Be sure to catch red-hot Fringe debuts from artists you’ll want to know including Jessie Doyle, Luke Casserly, Hannah Mamalis, Sahar Ali, Erin McGathy and Sugar Coat Theatre Company and many more new voices. Did we mention our first-ever Young Radicals: Fringe for Kids? Co-presented with Collapsing Horse, this line up features breakout new shows from LORDS OF STRUT & THISISPOPBABY, Eccles Theatre Group; Cobra’s Quest, a free podcast produced by 7-year old Cadhla and her dad; international hit for under-fours, Whoosh!; and a very special Young Hearts Run Free featuring teen bands and Dublin’s glitterati in a gig for ages 13 and up. Tell your friends, bring the chizzlers (and grown-ups, we won’t blame you if you sneak in by yourself). Thanks as always to the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, Dublin City Council and Fáilte Ireland, our core funders. They, along with an incredible mix of supporters, sponsors, embassies and FringeKin Friends make all the difference in bringing this year’s Fringe to life. Thanks to the hundreds of festival artists, technicians and team members, the 100+ volunteers, and most of all to you, dear Fringer. Thanks for exploring with us and making this festival yours. This edition is the biggest and best blast of smelling salts Dublin has ever had. Fringe 2017 will delight the senses and give you all kinds of reasons to explore the city. Revive yourself with new perspectives, urgent ideas and hands in the air, full-body art experiences. Get back in the ring with Fringe. Join us for an unforgettable fortnight that will leave you reeling in all the best ways. — Kris Nelson and Ruth McGowan 03

NEON John is trying to get gone – an unwilling antihero in a fallen world. But what revenge do they seek and who will pay? Because everything of value costs something. Enter the Soiled Dove saloon, grab a drink, a dab and have some fun while the rest are hung. The devil plays the music that drives us wild. The preacher munches Love Doves. The sheriff maintains law, order and hedonism. The prostitute is the moral compass for the whole damn town. The rainman wants the madness to end, making him the bad guy? In different locations, two writers type out observations of the world unfolding around them. In that same moment, a town choir receives these observations via a large screen and sings them out to the public. Drawing on patterns of relaying information that mirror Twitter or Facebook, Town Choir treats everyday considerations as the news. Intimate and minute details are transmitted through the ether and then filtered through the live body in an epic choral declaration. Theatre Replacement builds performances that react to contemporary existence. It reflects a concern with creating innovative new forms for worldwide audiences.

“Filthy and utterly hilarious.” The Stage

Post-popular prodigy Lucy McCormick and her Girl Squad present a trashstep-dubpunk morality play for the modern world. Casting herself in all the main roles, Lucy will attempt to re-connect to her own moral conscience by re-enacting the New Testament via a Nu-wave holy trinity of dance, power ballads and performance art. With trademark absurdism and enthusiasm, Lucy puts her best foot forward in the face of existential deadlock. In this hour long show Lucy invites you to join her in airing out some festering dirty laundry. Inspired by East London’s queers, queens, squatters and strikers – come to the real Royal Variety. With guest entertainment direction by cabaret and performance art superstar Ursula Martinez.

Contains strobe lighting, smoke machines, nudity and adult themes. Commissioned by hÅb and Contact for Works Ahead, with support from Soho Theatre and Marlbourgh and funding from Arts Council England. Supported by British Council (Ireland) and Dance Ireland.

We can try to alter mosquitoes to eliminate malaria, attempt to cure cancer or guarantee your child will be blonde. aon mhac tíre, nó roinnt mic tíre Ruairí Donovan and Mica Sigourney

“499 km de theorainn chun siúl - níl a fhios againn cé chomh eile a freagra a thabhairt ar cad atá ag tarlú.” A performance in three language sets: Gaeilge, English and Dance. Two Irishmen walk into a theatre: one from America and one from Ireland. Two men walk Irishly into an amharclann. Two Irishmen walk the border between the Republic and The North, then into a theatre. This duet traces a border, looking for midlands, mid folks and inbetweeners. It describes the familial lineages of an Irish emigrant and an Irish native, both queer; both with aspirations to discover or uncover a future by squinting at the past. Coming home. Leaving. Coming and going.

Foil Arms & Hog: OinK Dublin

Former children and regular eaters Foil Arms & Hog are back with the Irish premiere of their new show at Ireland’s national theatre. OinK is a fast paced sketch show featuring a collection of songs for the elderly, a baggage handler’s interpretive dance and a shop that naively sells only balaclavas. The show has yet to be reviewed but when it is, it will be “utterly spellbinding” and “a triumph”. Best known for their YouTube videos (50 million online hits), their live show is what they’re most proud of. They’ve sold-out every year at Fringe since 2012, a run that must surely end, but hopefully not this year.

DUBLIN FRINGE FESTIVAL AND THE ABBEY THEATRE PRESENT

The Shitstorm By Simon Doyle Directed by Maeve Stone Dublin An hallucinogenic riff on Shakespeare’s last play; A West-Kerry Tempest. Miranda’s been stuck on the island with her dad Prospero for a while now and things have been pretty bad. His threats to give up his magic have always been hollow until now. He’s run out on her and things have gotten a whole lot worse. Ariel is out of a job, Caliban is dangerously bored and Miranda is a teenage girl with no supervision. When the real storm hits she finally starts acting like one. In this new play Shakespeare’s characters find themselves in an entirely different context. A modern mash-up with some fierce female music and a new girl at the microphone. Cáit Fahey

Dummy Morb

Growing up as children of a celebrity ventriloquist, family problems regularly become front page fodder. Especially when your parent is a national joke. Burned by the glare of the spotlight, Teddy is a recluse, his only companion the dummy on his arm. But when his sister Dolly has a meltdown live on children’s television, the family home receives a couple of new house guests. One of them wooden. Throwing tantrums as well as voices, the whole family take to the stage. But which dummy is in control? From Peter Dunne, writer of This Year’s Girl, Eerie, Inhabitance and BROADENING, comes a dark hearted comedy about guilt, trauma and ventriloquism sure to set tongues wagging.

Talk Real Fine, Just Like a Lady Amanda Coogan and Dublin Theatre of the Deaf

Amanda Coogan and Dublin Theatre of the Deaf make a welcome return to Fringe this year in a new work that will appropriate Teresa Deevy’s play The King of Spain’s Daughter. Taking Deevy’s deafness as their ignition point, this new work will contextualise Deevy’s script within the cultural perspective of the deaf community in Ireland. Using Irish Sign language, and particularly women’s sign, as a choreographic tool the company will inhabit the Peacock in a visually stunning immersive performance. Amanda’s work has been described by Artforum as “performance art at its best” and The Irish Times described Coogan’s 2014 collaboration with DTD as “a quiet, beautiful spectacle and an intriguing collaboration.”

Nine Hilary Woods

“My dreams are a stupid refuge, like an umbrella against a thunderbolt.” A sickly day, humid, grey, blurry visions throbbing in the heat. A Ryanair flight, escape, promise. Sky close, running aground short of breath, swimming shorts, suncream, Chuck Berry. Is it better to dream than to be? “I wasn’t meant for reality, but life came and found me.” Planet Nine looks like a volcanic crater of thickened fog and frenzied awakenings. A demystifying trip of intrigue at the edge of the cosmos, a powerful piece of theatre fusing sound, dance, film, romance, and a hapless hero called King.

Everything Now Irish Modern Dance Theatre

Everything Now – our final gesture before we’re thrown off a cliff. A rollercoaster ride with beautiful dancing men, a laughing/shouting multicultural chorus, dazzling lights, stunning sounds and physical explosions, interventions from emotionally virtuosic performers from Africa and Ireland, and sound artist Jassem Hindi. Racially and politically mixed up and fucked up, supple, diverse and half beautiful, Everything Now fuses the physically brilliant with the awkward, combining formality and rigour of highly disciplined dance with elements of a 1960s happening. This is our testament. NOW! Choreographed by John Scott – creator of New York hits Lear and Fall and Recover.

Fierce Notions Ill-Advised Theatre Company

A new musical about democracy, politics and fishbased confectionery products from writer / composer Fionn Foley. The distant yet familiar state of Hibernia has been taken over by corrupt tyrant Austericus, plunging its citizens into an oppressive autocracy. Two slaves, Ragnall and Milo, bear witness to a divine oracle and try to convince a local cod merchant to be the face of the revolution. But will he take the bait? Together with a riotous troupe of actors, musicians and fish, emerging Irish musical hit-makers Ill-Advised present a spectacularly irreverent take on the absolute state of the place and the power of being a ‘character’.

It has been a time of soul-searching for Gladys and the Gutter Stars. They have stowed themselves away for months in seclusion, working on their hotly anticipated new album. Rumours abound. Susanne R. Day’s Toilers– Her Lost Play– as reconstructed by Painted Bird

Three young women determine to remake the world. They start by reconstructing a lost play. In 1913, Susanne R. Day staged a ‘little propaganda play’ in a fundraiser for women fighting for the vote. She had been fearless before, in her arguments, her commitments and her politics. She believed women should participate in all the big decisions and meant to prove it with her life. One hundred years later, three young women discover the stakes are just as high for them. Fringe Award-winners Painted Bird reconstruct the text of Day’s lost play, imagining what might have been.

NOT AT HOME Emma Fraser

(NINE CROWS)

& Grace Dyas

(THEATREclub)

Dublin

In 2013, she travelled to have an abortion. Afterwards, she needed to talk to women who had made this journey. She asked them to share their stories. In the waiting room, they all felt alone. They were not at home. Now, THEATREclub and NINE CROWS are asking you to come and hear their story in NOT AT HOME; an installation, a performance, a witnessing space – a waiting room. There will be no arguments, no shouting, no stopwatch to ensure balance. This is not a sermon to the converted – it’s a calm place for the undecided, for those who have made up their minds and for those who need some space to think. Contains nudity and adult themes. My Left Nut Michael Patrick

Kicking all the Boxes Liz FitzGibbon

Belfast

Dublin

400 millilitres. That’s how much liquid was drained from Michael’s left testicle when he was 18 years old. That’s more than a can of coke. He should have told someone sooner, but who could he turn to? His dad died ten years ago and besides, school is full of rumours about what the giant bulge in his trousers actually is. Who wants to stop that? The true story of a Belfast boy’s journey through puberty with no father to help him through and a giant ball to weigh him down.

What do you do when life no longer parties with you but instead looms large with the big questions? What can you do? You can batter it into submission until – kicking and screaming – it stops asking what you have to show for yourself. From the mind of a former kick boxing champion and developed with Mikel Murfi comes an explosive, physical, gut-busting – utterly fabricated – story like no other. Taking life’s big questions and leaving them reeling.

Strange lights are appearing in the sky. It’s the future. We all have chips implanted in our brains. They let us access the Internet. They let us make calls and receive our emails. They control how we act. They regulate how we feel. Dublin is mostly unchanged; apart from the holograms and robot security. The Spire is a giant information feed: Twitter, news, public service information, cake videos and weather updates all day. Every day. Two sisters are about to experience the end of the world. But only one of them knows it. An explosion of spoken word, sci-fi and sisterhood. Dublin’s going out with a bang.

“It happened every time he went on the pop. At first it made him curious. Soon he became only afraid.” Writer Peter MacNamara has written a short story inspired by the Dublin phrase ‘on the pop’. It’s a tale of one young man’s trials and tribulations as he cums to terms with his erection being inexplicably linked to a white pigeon. Studio Yum Yum members – Niamh Hannaford, Gavin Leane, Gearóid O’Dea and Darren O’Driscoll - have created a series of vibrant visual art works in a range of mediums including painting, photography and sculpture in reaction to the story. ZEHR GUT & D-Light Studios present

One of the stars of Weimar’s increasingly infamous Giegling collective, Berlin DJ and producer Edward makes his Irish debut with a very special three hour live audio visual performance in the unique setting of D-Light Studios. While his production output spans across a broad range of styles, Edward’s music typically encompasses the emotion-filled qualities that have helped make Giegling one of house and techno’s bestloved labels in the world. Zehr Gut is a collaboration between alternative space focused event producers Homebeat and the Goethe-Institut Irland celebrating the continuing impact of German artistry here in Ireland. Support from Dreamcycles.

ABACUS Laura Murphy

Step off the conveyor belt. Nine women take 18 buckets through some finely tuned choreography: lifting and swinging, twirling and clashing to the beat of the industrial drum. They’re working on the hour, every hour for six hours. A hypnotic journey across the factory floor making a spectacle of the mundane. Choreographer Laura Murphy finds the humanity in mass production and hears music where others hear noise. Pick up a bucket and get in line.

Cork

This is an outdoor performance, please dress appropriately. Supported by Temple Bar Cultural Trust. Originally created as part of Cork’s Dancer in Residence at Firkin Crane supported by the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, Cork City Council and Firkin Crane. The development of this work has been supported by Dance Ireland.

Dublin Fringe Festival Awards 2017 Fringe Awards recognise, reward and celebrate the hard work and talent on display in the festival each year. Annually hundreds of artists bring their intelligence, heart, vision and drive to projects at the festival. They inspire us. The Awards honour and acknowledge some of the stand-outs in this year’s festival. Over 600 artists are part of the 23rd edition of Dublin Fringe Festival. Their determination, ambition, hard work and creativity is thrilling. We want to celebrate these makers and their incredible talent. We’re thrilled to introduce two prestigious new Awards this year.

NEW AWARDS The Georganne Aldrich Heller Award offers a ground-breaking festival creator a monetary prize and a bursary to go towards that artist working in New York – either making a research and networking visit, attending an artist residency or going towards a tour. Creating a valuable connection for an Irish artist with the New York scene, the winner will be championed by Ms Heller, a stalwart friend of Irish and American theatre. It’s an honour to introduce another new award – Spirit of Wit. Presented in memory of Moira Brady Averill. Moira had the power to transform space and thought through alchemical wit. We want to this year recognise her kindred spirits. With humour at its core, Spirit of Wit also includes the equivocal characteristics of her creative and performative power. The 2017 award will be presented by Gareth Averill and Maeve Stone in partnership with Dublin Fringe Festival.

118

Best Production For the show that has it all! Best Design Outstanding lighting, sound, scenic, projection, costume or overall design. Best Performers Two of this year’s brightest stars will take home this accolade. Best Ensemble The standout ensemble – the heartbeat of a show. Judges’ Choice Awards Chosen by the judging panel to honour things that defy categorisation, but must be recognised for their brilliance. Fishamble New Writing Award The best play by an emerging Irish (or Ireland-based) writer. Award includes dramaturgical support by Fishamble: The New Play Company. First Fortnight Award The winner will perform at the First Fortnight Festival; whose mission is mental health awareness, challenging prejudice and ending stigma.

Next Stage Wild Card A bursary to be part of the Next Stage at Dublin Theatre Festival with Theatre Forum. Bewley’s Café Theatre Little Gem Award The most exciting show that’s under 60 minutes with a handsome prize: a twoweek run at Bewley’s Café Theatre and €2,000 for the remount. Spirit of Fringe, Spirit of Project Award Co-presented by Dublin Fringe Festival and Project Arts Centre. An Irish artist dedicated to making bold contemporary work and who embodies the spirit of Fringe and Project. Georganne Aldrich Heller Award A standout Irish artist or company that demonstrates innovation and connects with audiences. Part bursary, part investment, the award supports an Irish artist to connect with the New York theatre scene. Spirit of Wit Award A unique award for an artist willing to take risks and whose work defies categorisation with bold and unconventional material. In memory of Moira Brady Averill.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! We can never thank you enough! This Fringe is taking over our city. It’s building the ramparts, parties, havens and escapes that we need in 2017. But it wouldn’t be happening without a truckload of very special people. Huge thanks to our artists, technicians, volunteers, staff, partners, board members, interns, stakeholders, venues, funders, sponsors, friends, family and judges. And to each and every Fringe goer: thank you for your support, your passion and your curiosity. Big love! Take a look at the list of those who fuel Fringe at fringefest.com.
