Welcome to the Brave New World of ABSOLUT Fringe 2011.
Since late last year, we have been having animated conversations with artists around the ideas expressed on the page overleaf. We formed a provocation, a manifesto of sorts, and asked artists to respond. What they came back to us with surprised and later energised and propelled the festival forward. What you will find as an audience member at ABSOLUT Fringe this year, is artists of immense talent and capability pushing themselves to their very limit. Charting a new course through a very changed Irish society is difficult. Imagining a new way of being is not an easy task. What surprised me most was how many artists decided to approach their next work in this context by themselves. While a cynic might point to a hostile economy where a solo work is cheaper and easier to produce, I am convinced that a deeper reason for this choice exists. These artists are going the distance, taking the path less travelled, without companionship. And what that does for me (and hopefully for you) is inspire courage as we together marvel at their bravery. A contemporary vision quest is demonstrated in Man of Valour, The Year of Magical Wanking, The Eternal Rising of the Sun, Where Do I Start?, No Man’s Land and also arguably Twenty Ten, written by a crowd of anonymous solo contributors struggling to deal with a very difficult year. In thinking about our international programme for this year’s festival, we turned to another Brave New World: Australia. A faraway place that has straddled the line between Utopia and Dystopia in the Irish psyche for generations, and now the go-to destination for our once-again emigrating youth. I am delighted to present four very different shows as part of our Australian season this year; each one speaks to our audience in a very different way. We are as ever, indebted to the talent, energy and achievement of the participating artists in the festival, whose work this year I am immensely proud of. We couldn’t make the festival happen without our incredible volunteers, courageous funders and media partners, particularly our core funder The Arts Council and title sponsor ABSOLUT, our patrons, our programme partners, a hugely dedicated voluntary board and you, the audience. I really hope you enjoy the festival this year.

You’ve seen companies like THISISPOPBABY, THEATREclub, Pan Pan, The Corn Exchange, Rex Levitates and The Performance Corporation perform some of their greatest work and been there for some of our biggest international shows. You’ve caught acts like La Clique, Camille O’Sullivan and the Rubberbandits before they hit the mainstream, and enjoyed magical evenings in gardens, decadent tents and festival clubs.

No maN’S LAND BY FERGAL MCCARTHY Co-produced and presented by ABSOLUT Fringe.
NO MAN IS AN ISLAND… AND YET WE’VE ALL HAD DREAMS OF ESCAPING TO ONE.
After the huge success of last year’s LiffeyTown, artist Fergal McCarthy returns with a new art installation in 2011. A desert island will appear overnight in the midst of the Liffey, complete with sand, a tent, even palm trees. This island is an unreal place with room for only one; a constructed urban oasis where the artist will live on the Liffey during the festival. Islands have always been potent spaces for the imagination. The idea of a desert island floating in the middle of the Liffey may seem intriguing but is it any less incongruous than

those half-built edifices that rise alongside the riverbanks? Like Robinson Crusoe’s island, being stranded on the river could feel like paradise or prison. The artist's temporary colonisation of an unsteady island on the Liffey reflects many aspects of Ireland's current crisis of identity. More information on No Man’s Land: fergalmccarthy.blogspot.com
Last year Fergal McCarthy captured the zeitgeist of Ireland’s fall from economic grace so perfectly it would be hard to match. And yet here he is again, surpassing the achievement of Liffey Town, sharing his loneliness and need for contemplative solitude with all of us. Travel down the quays. Take in the full panoramic vista. Spend some time in contemplation with him. — FESTIVAL DIRECTOR

MAN OF VaLOUR From the creative team behind the acclaimed Freefall (Best Play, Best Director, Irish Times Theatre Awards 2009), Dublin’s diverse and exciting ensemble theatre company, The Corn Exchange, presents Man of Valour, a one-man action movie, created by Michael West, Annie Ryan and Paul Reid. Farrell Blinks is an office drone with an overactive fantasy gland. His imagined, heroic adventures offer violent release from the pressures and boredom of his ordinary life — until the border between fantasy and reality begins to blur. When his demons come after him, Farrell has to find his voice and face them down.
Backed by an award-winning creative team, Man of Valour is a breathtaking performance by Paul Reid (RTE’s RAW) in the unique transformational style of The Corn Exchange. The Corn Exchange returns to the festival after a long absence with this incredible new show. It’s about now, and it’s for you. We sent an email once a day to ANYBODY who wanted to play and asked them “What have you learnt today?” Now, we have an archive created by a crowd. Time is running out. It has to be said aloud. We’ll start at the beginning, take two months of the archive at a time; a different show every night. We’re going to perform it for you in black and in white. MACNAS: ON THE edge of thINgs Is A FIeRce beauty What we call the beginning is often the end and what we call the end is often the beginning. This is the communication of the future. A story led by a Mistress of Invention that is low and divine, soiled and sublime. Misfits and navigators, poets, punks and mystics growl at the moon, unbind darkness and rediscover the pulp and sinew of innocence. Catch a glimpse of new universes as imaginers, conjurers, philosophers and inventors, like rough-hewn seers, stagger, stalk, rip, roar and wrangle their way through a world of science and sawdust caught in the act of becoming... In this ugly, pretty life be amazed, terrified and tremble with the joy of things as wise beasts, rude charmers, arch
rascals and babbling, brilliant buffoons evoke, wake and create a new world on the edge of things…. With one eye on art and the other on invention, Macnas will once again open the festival in truly spectacular fashion, amidst the stunning, evocative environs of The National Museum of Ireland - Decorative Arts & History, Collins Barracks. Don’t miss this free outdoor feast for the senses. After the incredible success of The Wild Hunt last year, we could think of no better way to open the festival than to invite Macnas back. Combining a lyrical text, truly immersive staging, and Wilson’s enigmatic and compelling performance style, Autobiographer draws us into the unravelling mind of the central character Flora. Voiced by multiple performers, Flora reveals a curious and evocative portrait of a life refracted through the lens of dementia. Melanie Wilson is a performer, writer and sound artist making work that centres on the use of sound as a distinct, immersive agency, powerfully linked to state of mind. Most recently her production Iris Brunette toured nationally and internationally to great critical acclaim, receiving the Best Production award at ABSOLUT Fringe in 2009. Australia’s Chunky Move has earned an enviable reputation for producing a distinct and unpredictable brand of genre-defying dance. Antony Hamilton and Byron Perry’s I Like This is a journey of two men who embark on an unusual creative project: to design an environment, attempt to make sense of it and begin to control it. Intimate, playful and engaging, I Like This balances detailed sophistication and delightful mischief. It’s often comic absurdity reveals our limited capacity to be able to genuinely communicate with each other, to control or fully understand our surroundings.

To err is human, to dance divine. Meet Gina, she’s hopeless, everyone knows. She wants to be in a hot air balloon with Michael Jackson. She wants to cry during her Oscar speech. She wants to hit that high note that makes people gasp. She wants to soar…to fly… to move. But Gina is hopeless, so she can’t. This is the dark, moving and tender journey of Gina’s transformation. A poignant account of redemption and release. On the heels of multiaward winning I ♥ Alice ♥ I, HotForTheatre brings you a compelling story of salvation, deliverance and barrel jumps. Mother Tongue is in the emergency ward; each focal ag cryáil amach for the kiss of life. In this bilingual exploration of the fragile soul of Gaeilge, a Béarlóir and a subtitle operator slug it out with tongue tying, grammar wrestling, dictionary massacres and a mutant version of the Pepsi challenge. It’s a celebration of language as weapon, chicaning into some farcical linguistics and a revelatory revival meeting for forgotten words. Fully subtitled bilingual theatre.

ALL THINGS CONSIDERED IT’S A NICE PLACE TO START Last month 300 strangers throughout the 32 counties received thank-you cards from us. We wanted to reach out so we wrote to them. Because things were grim; we were sad and we didn’t know what to do. We wanted to say thanks for letting us skip the queue that time, for being bright and different and needed and involved and for daring to be you. Writing these notes gave us hope and a reason to look up; made us think of fresh starts, new beginnings and a time for change. Now, we’re making a play about it and we want to share it with you. We want to change the world but we are only three. This could be a nice place to start.

My WoRd is my Bond Tired of the same old group dynamics, six members of a writers’ group and their mentor ditch their attempts at fiction in order to embark on a journey of truth and tell their own stories. But memories have been known to play games, manipulate the facts and lie and the stories of truth that we weave may not be so reliable. This new play provides an entertaining and thought-provoking exploration of the boundaries between reality and fiction, creativity and vanity. This might be a ghost story. Worse yet, it might not. The dark corners of the theatre reflect the dark corners of the mind in this adaptation of the American Gothic novella which charts a young woman's descent into madness during the Victorian era of medical extremes. We stage scenes of spectacular love. Scenes of romance downloaded from pop-culture are transposed to the real time of theatre. Cue Romeo and Juliet’s amateur dramatics, a scene stolen from Mills and Boon, a fairytale featuring a ham sandwich and more. Throughout the narrative, two guys and one girl are locked in a revolving love triangle, forced to exhaust the spectacle of love and see what survives. Two of the actors clearly can’t act. We are two Argentinean cousins who came to Dublin a decade ago in search of our long lost motherland, reversing the journey of our greatgreat grandfather who emigrated from Dublin to La Pampa 200 years ago. This is an epic archival voyage which attempts to reconstruct our Irish identity after being brought up on a romanticized ideal of the Emerald Isle. Our search for “the glory and the story of the sea-divided Gaels" uncovers a journey of lies, revealing that perhaps the motherland is better loved from afar…

Does Anybody Ever Three grown up children are living in a black box. They’re sitting in the bath because they're dirty and they want to be clean. As they have no idea how they’re related to each other, they have no idea how to relate to each other. They’re making brutalities into games to pass the time, and they want you to see what they’ve just learned to do. These bloodless siblings are learning that we love the people we hate just as much as we hate the people we love. Does Anybody Ever is a new show by

As a child, Lucy admired the evil Queen far more than the fairy princess. Who held the keys to the kingdom? Who had everyone jump at her command? One day, Lucy would. 20 years on, she has fulfilled her dream, becoming head of her department at Harper, Harper and Harperson. All is well in her kingdom until a ghost from her childhood plunges Lucy’s world into shadow. Through puppetry and performance, Beyond the Bark shows us that our future is determined by how we face the past. Now, Lucy must face the darkness to see the bright side of the moon.

Ireland is once again demoralised. The blame this time is our own. Old enmities are gone, old stories remain. But have the poets and dreamers who started it all got off lightly? Was imagined Ireland impossible for the reality to live up to? When the word became flesh did the dream end? From a bank of video images, mixing audio and narration, live artist Denis Buckley takes us on a dark-night Dreamtime odyssey. Scuttling by the syringes and chained gates, a new Hibernia is born through the absence of naming and owning. Tired old stories are torched in the cold light. Fashion spectacle extraordinaire, this new production plays with the rhetoric of live performance in a post-digital, mediatised world. When live events are designed to be filtered via TV, online networks and other forms of media distribution, what affect does this have on production and our relationship to ‘real stuff’? Taking the classic ‘runway’ format as a site for exploration, the event showcases a clothing collection that has been made to be documented which consequently struggles to cope with a live scenario. SWITCHED ON is a series of music events specially curated by Darren McCreesh, where you’ll experience eclectic expressions of ‘the new great music’ and appreciate the significance of electronic and experimental music in defining the ‘Brave New World’. “In the new great music, machines will also be necessary and will be assigned a share in it.” This was futurologist Ferruccio Busoni in 1907, confidently predicting the emergence of electronic music which would come to dominate popular and experimental music in the late 20th and early 21st Century. However, others such as renowned folk music collector Cecil Sharp hoped that music would help lead a retreat from industrial values towards a pastoral Arcadian epoch. What neither school of thought anticipated was the capacity of musicians to absorb the tools and language of technology as part of their own songwriting craft; a kind of unending, evolving creative spur. All events take place at The Workman's Club and go on until late. Licensed premises: Strictly 18+.
wILD COMBInATION SPILLY WALKER | TR-ONE | ANGKORWAT | DAVID KITT & BROKEN AUDIO MOVEMENT (DJ SET) Distilling 30 years of electronic dance music, Spilly Walker’s songs are rich in sonic texture and filtered with a melodic pop sensibility. Classic house, Hip Hop and electronica are all filtered through the Spilly song-writing machine in a subtly original way that brings to mind Arthur Russell’s transformative minimasterpieces of sound. Spilly Walker will be joined by the Chicago house stomp of TR-ONE and expressionist electronica of Angkorwat. While versed in the language of modernist electronic music, each provide tantalising glimpses into new worlds, demonstrating the vitality of electronic music well into the 21st Century. Music for the head, heart and feet, be sure to bring your dancing shoes. country Ireland dates Fri 16th @ 7.30PM price €12

ÜLTRAKUGEL TWINKRANES | BRUNO SPOERRI | ANWORTH KIRK & DEMDIKE STARE, SUPPORT: SOMADRONE, B-MUSIC DJs (ANDY VOTEL) Irish debut for Swiss electronic pioneer Bruno Spoerri whose impressively unconventional musical career spans over 40 years. As a composer for industrial and engineering companies, Bruno mixed primitive sampling techniques with musique concrète as well as using contemporary experimental psych-rock and funk musicians to motivate workers on the factory floor. Mysterious art/trash music project Anworth Kirk & Demdike Stare will perform a live re-vamped score for “Le Viol du Vampire” by ‘Fantastique’ filmmaker Jean Rollin. They will be joined on the bill by Twinkranes, Dublin’s delayed response to Neu! and Silver Apples, whose metronomic debut ‘Spektrumtheatresnakes’ had The Guardian, NME and assorted tastemakers purring with approval. Ültrakugel is a Finders Keepers/B-Music Presentation curated by Darren McCreesh
ARCADIAN SONGBOOK SERAFINA STEER | KATIE KIM | LISPECTOR When not performing with the likes of Patrick Wolf, Serafina Steer writes ethereal and intimate songs for performance with a harp. Her recent album, 'Change is good, change is good', prompted Jarvis Cocker to proclaim it one of his favourites of 2010. Katie Kim’s ambient folk/pop has garnered favourable comparisons to Cat Power and Joanna Newsom. The music revolves and swims around layers of fuzzy drips and murky clouds, always seeming to come to an elegant conclusion. Experiencing the music of Lispector is like unlocking a treasure trove of minimalist, Daniel Johnson-esque lo-fi pop masterpieces, each song an entry point into a world of private pleasures. In their own unique way, each artist shares an uncanny knack for bringing you to Arcadian corners of the imagination.

Revolutionary texts: Then and now. Writers and directors from ABSOLUT Fringe’s Revolutionary Texts series discuss political Irish playwriting from the independent theatre sector from the 1990s to the present day. 1PM - WAYNE JORDAN
Where love and acting go together; A REFLECTION ON THE RECENT HISTORY OF THEATRE MAKING IN DUBLIN. By talking through his own experience of the work of director Jason Byrne and his company Loose Canon, Wayne will examine some threads he perceives in the recent history of theatre practice in Dublin and the challenge this work makes to his own practice. 1.30PM – LOUISE LOWE
Space, Place and Community Louise Lowe makes theatre in site-specific and site-responsive contexts that reflect the physical architecture and encapsulate the energy of each space; the residue of people who have inhabited them, their history, present tense and sometimes their imagined future. In this lecture Louise will explore the role of the audience as a vital and critical element of this type of performance. 2PM-2.45PM – LUNCH BREAK
2.45PM – ELLA CLARKE
Lecture on a Professional Biography in Thirty Minutes Ella Clarke will perform a demonstration of her composite professional experience from her beginnings at ballet school, time studying in Russia, contemporary retraining, pursuit of form, meeting Deborah Hay, creating Genesis Project, developing solo practice, choreographing for theatre and performance as a genreless art. 3.15PM – DYLAN TIGHE
What’s the point? Ethics vs Aesthetics on and off stage. To what extent do ethics related to the context of presentation and conditions of production influence the overall meaning of the performance? Using his own work as a starting point, Dylan seeks to answer this question with reference to contemporary theatre practice. 4PM
The State of this Fringe Nation in a Brave New World A panel discussion with audience participation on the work presented in ABSOLUT Fringe 2011, This session will be chaired by Loughlin Deegan, outgoing Artistic Director of Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival and incoming Artistic Director of The Lir, Ireland’s new National Academy for The Performing Arts.

Irish Theatre Institute’s 6th annual Information Toolbox, a key networking event, is produced specifically with the needs of new and emerging theatre and dance companies/artists in mind. This event provides an ideal environment for new and emerging Irish companies/artists to promote shows, pitch work to venues and festivals and begin dialogue with key funding agencies and support organisations. This event has evolved to also provide the participants with an opportunity to meet and engage with international organisations and presenters. The objective is for these companies and artists to investigate the possibility of re-mounting their shows following ABSOLUT Fringe or, indeed, to create new work in the future. ITI is delighted to partner again with ABSOLUT Fringe and Fishamble: the New
Play Company on the Show in a Bag initiative. Information Toolbox is an ideal platform for these five new small-scale artist led shows to be promoted to presenting venues and festivals around Ireland. ITI’s Information Toolbox is an event exclusively for companies and artists presenting work in the 2011 ABSOLUT Fringe. ITI’s Information Toolbox is funded by The Arts Council, Dublin City Council and Culture Ireland. Book your place directly through Irish Theatre Institute by contacting Jen Coppinger, Information & Events Manager; jcoppinger@irishtheatreinstitute.ie or (01) 670 4908.
