Welcome to the Brave New World of ABSOLUT Fringe 2011.

Since late last year, we have been having animated conversations with artists around the ideas expressed on the page overleaf. We formed a provocation, a manifesto of sorts, and asked artists to respond. What they came back to us with surprised and later energised and propelled the festival forward. What you will find as an audience member at ABSOLUT Fringe this year, is artists of immense talent and capability pushing themselves to their very limit. Charting a new course through a very changed Irish society is difficult. Imagining a new way of being is not an easy task. What surprised me most was how many artists decided to approach their next work in this context by themselves. While a cynic might point to a hostile economy where a solo work is cheaper and easier to produce, I am convinced that a deeper reason for this choice exists. These artists are going the distance, taking the path less travelled, without companionship. And what that does for me (and hopefully for you) is inspire courage as we together marvel at their bravery. A contemporary vision quest is demonstrated in Man of Valour, The Year of Magical Wanking, The Eternal Rising of the Sun, Where Do I Start?, No Man’s Land and also arguably Twenty Ten, written by a crowd of anonymous solo contributors struggling to deal with a very difficult year. In thinking about our international programme for this year’s festival, we turned to another Brave New World: Australia. A faraway place that has straddled the line between Utopia and Dystopia in the Irish psyche for generations, and now the go-to destination for our once-again emigrating youth. I am delighted to present four very different shows as part of our Australian season this year; each one speaks to our audience in a very different way. We are as ever, indebted to the talent, energy and achievement of the participating artists in the festival, whose work this year I am immensely proud of. We couldn’t make the festival happen without our incredible volunteers, courageous funders and media partners, particularly our core funder The Arts Council and title sponsor ABSOLUT, our patrons, our programme partners, a hugely dedicated voluntary board and you, the audience. I really hope you enjoy the festival this year.

No maN’S LAND BY FERGAL MCCARTHY Co-produced and presented by ABSOLUT Fringe.

NO MAN IS AN ISLAND… AND YET WE’VE ALL HAD DREAMS OF ESCAPING TO ONE.

After the huge success of last year’s LiffeyTown, artist Fergal McCarthy returns with a new art installation in 2011. A desert island will appear overnight in the midst of the Liffey, complete with sand, a tent, even palm trees. This island is an unreal place with room for only one; a constructed urban oasis where the artist will live on the Liffey during the festival. Islands have always been potent spaces for the imagination. The idea of a desert island floating in the middle of the Liffey may seem intriguing but is it any less incongruous than

those half-built edifices that rise alongside the riverbanks? Like Robinson Crusoe’s island, being stranded on the river could feel like paradise or prison. Last year Fergal McCarthy captured the zeitgeist of Ireland’s fall from economic grace so perfectly it would be hard to match. We sent an email once a day to ANYBODY who wanted to play and asked them “What have you learnt today?” Now, we have an archive created by a crowd. Time is running out. It has to be said aloud. We’ll start at the beginning, take two months of the archive at a time; a different show every night. We’re going to perform it for you in black and in white. On Saturday we’ll hear it all back to back. Six hours of endurance. A verbal attack. You can come every night, or just one time. You’ll catch up, we’ll fill you in. That’ll be fine.

LISTEN. We all know a lot went ON and a lot went WRONG and we have a HUGE DOCUMENT to prove it. I MEAN IT’S ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY SEVEN pages long. It was written by people JUST LIKE YOU. We learned that we all felt the same things at the same time. Now we want you to know that too. YOU WROTE Twenty Ten so come and LISTEN and maybe it won’t happen all over again.

Magical WanKing Neil Watkins has wanked more than is healthy, allegedly. One of Ireland’s most exciting artists and incendiary performers, Neil is a force of nature, a maverick, a 33-year old homosexual with a Jesus complex. On orders from Heaven, this is Neil’s journey through the wilderness of queerness; from Catholic Ireland to the cruising bars of the world, from suburban ‘Head Shops’ to Native American ceremonies. Named as Queer Notions 2010 Festival Highlight by The Irish Times, this is a brave and heartbreaking exploration of porn addiction, destructive sexual behaviour, Catholic guilt and family heartbreak. Written in hypnotic verse, it is both a profound personal journey and a furious state of the nation address.

Three women in a darkened theatre perform a compellingly illogical dance. As if lightly blown onto stage, with a quick glamorous saunter, one hand on hip, they travel a straight line followed by a curved one, appearing to navigate without a specific destination before arriving near the audience. A moving, profound, sublimely ridiculous performance of their very own lost opera. They are not lost; but where are they going? SWITCHED ON is a series of music events specially curated by Darren McCreesh, where you’ll experience eclectic expressions of ‘the new great music’ and appreciate the significance of electronic and experimental music in defining the ‘Brave New World’. “In the new great music, machines will also be necessary and will be assigned a share in it.” This was futurologist Ferruccio Busoni in 1907, confidently predicting the emergence of electronic music which would come to dominate popular and experimental music in the late 20th and early 21st Century. However, others such as renowned folk music collector Cecil Sharp hoped that music would help lead a retreat from industrial values towards a pastoral Arcadian epoch. What neither school of thought anticipated was the capacity of musicians to absorb the tools and language of technology as part of their own songwriting craft; a kind of unending, evolving creative spur. ARCADIAN SONGBOOK SERAFINA STEER | KATIE KIM | LISPECTOR When not performing with the likes of Patrick Wolf, Serafina Steer writes ethereal and intimate songs for performance with a harp. Her recent album, 'Change is good, change is good', prompted Jarvis Cocker to proclaim it one of his favourites of 2010. Katie Kim’s ambient folk/pop has garnered favourable comparisons to Cat Power and Joanna Newsom. The music revolves and swims around layers of fuzzy drips and murky clouds, always seeming to come to an elegant conclusion.
