SOMETIMES THE ANTICIPATION AND CHALLENGE OF REACHING A GOAL CAN BE BETTER THAN THE GOAL ITSELF.” – IVAN “IRONMAN” STEWART As a legend in off-road racing, Ivan “Ironman” Stewart was no stranger to tackling goals. He overcame the toughest challenges in the sport with 40 years of winning. Building your ultimate adventure rig always has its challenges - whether that’s money, supplies, parts, repairs or time - but knowing that all that hard work will pay off, in the end, is worth it. Many of the builders in this issue felt the same way about their journeys. Nic Ashby of Rockstar Performance Garage is no stranger to building vehicles and it’s just another day on the job. But

when you do what you love, it’s never really a job and that’s how he feels with every build that drives out of his garage. His latest is a collaboration with the Halo video game franchise that will award one lucky winner the chance to strut on the trails in a fully-built Jeep Gladiator that pays homage to the latest installment of the legendary Halo series. Jamie Wiseman has been a VW fan for as long as he can remember and has years of experience restoring vintage VWs. Now, he and his wife own three vintage bugs, with the Burro being his favorite off-road rig with all the fixings. He fabricates his own parts and accessories and tells us what his favorite trails are for him and his rugged Beatle. Shaun Freilich of the storied Complete Customs out in Texas is known for his flashy and sky-high customs, but when it came down to building his own Jeep Gladiator, he knew he needed it to encompass a few personal mods. Since he likes to get down on the grill, he added his very own Traeger Tailgater Grill, so he could whip up some culinary treats wherever he treks.

Michael Simpson grew up on a farm so riding 4-wheelers and wrenching on Jeeps was a childhood pastime. With a rugged spirit, he found himself building his first real adventure rig using an FJ Cruiser as the base of his masterpiece. Now, he’s an overlanding pro as he tackles some of the hardest trails in his home state of North Carolina. Because building a rig is only half of the fun, we’ve got an insider look at some events, including Pure 4x4’s Basecamp 3.0 Social weekend in Big Bear, CA, Pit and Paddock Drivers Project excursion off the beaten path from SoCal to Vegas and a look into a recent journey with Brian Lau’s (@more.van.ever/ @sprinter.overland.trip) community of van enthusiasts. We caught up with Nic up in Big Bear, CA, where he gave us the low down on the collaboration, and how he brought the special edition rig to life!

THE RISE OF ROCKSTAR PERFORMANCE GARAGE It’s like Rockstar Energy’s own garage, but I own it. It’s kind of a crazy world I live in within the industry. I’m a builder, content creator and do a lot of crazy things across the industry. We shoot a lot of content for Mickey Thompson, TV commercials and work with different brands. It’s kind of weird because I started my path in the import and muscle car scene, working on cars for Nissan and Chevy before getting pulled into this industry by the brands I now work with. This is where their need is and that’s what I’m fulfilling. Nowadays, we do events and our own stuff, too. It’s pretty cool how I built my own niche in the industry. This is my life and It’s awesome; I couldn’t be happier about it. We mostly do work with brands and we build very few customer cars since we are selective. If we build you a car, you’re basically an ambassador or an affiliate of ours and it’s going to be shown at events. We do work for brands like K&N Filters, Yukon Gears, R1 Concepts, Wheel Pros and more. A lot of our deals have been 10-plus year partnerships so it’s been cool to see a marketing company like ours retain clients like that. A lot of people wonder if we only build off-road rigs since they see just Jeep builds, but no. Last year, we did the CyberPunk giveaway car, which was a 1970 fully restored Mustang. But we’ve built Camaros, Challengers, Nissans, a lot of imports and muscle stuff. But the last few years we’ve been dedicated to off-road since that’s where our clients want us.

FROM MILITARY HERO TO SPOKESPERSON I grew up on a horse ranch in Utah and went into the military after 9/11. When I joined, I was deployed in one of the first units in Iraq without armored Humvees. So I started fabricating the armor for them to stop help against attacks and explosives. When I got home, I built a car called The National Guard’s Fallen Heroes dedicated to friends who were killed in action. The car was a huge hit in 2007 and went on tour for Hot Import Nights. That led me to a relationship with Nissan and I turned into a spokesperson for the National Guard. I wanted to do something else and that’s when Rockstar came to me about building a garage for them. It was around the same time I built a 5th generation Camaro with Chevy and it won the Gran Turismo Award and was featured in video games and magazines. 34

THE HALO INFINITE CALL The last few years have been a weird transition with what’s going on with Rockstar over at the corporate level. We got a call about doing another video game build, and low and behold it’s Halo Infinite. I was pretty stoked to do this one, though. Anyone who grew up in the ’90s knows Halo video games, and it’s awesome that the game is still holding on and is one of the biggest games out there. Being able to be a part of something like this with Rockstar Energy and Halo is amazing. This is something that is going to be there forever. Just like when we won the video game award, this will always be tied to the video game and its launch. Some day my son will see this. He’s 9 years old and for this past Halloween, I was late to SEMA because he was dressed up as Master Chief. I couldn’t miss that opportunity to pair his costume with the Jeep and go to school and go trick-or-treating with him. The biggest challenge for this build was the timeline; we had 12 other builds to do for SEMA. And now that Rockstar Energy is part of Pepsi, the approval process is long. Every aspect of the build needs to have approval so it’s a grueling process. But that’s the reason you end up with something like this - the quality is unparalleled because of those approvals. I wouldn’t have changed it for the world even though it was very tiring and a lot of work.

ARMING THE MASTER CHIEF EDITION JEEP GLADIATOR The Master Chief Edition Jeep Gladiator that we did is not your normal Jeep Gladiator build. We stripped this thing down to basically a rolling chassis and sprayed the entire exterior in a Patriot Liner Code Green, matching the Master Chief’s MJOLNIR armor suit. Now, you can’t have Master Chief without aggressiveness, so you have a set of 42” Baja Pro XS tires on it wrapped around a set of 20” Black Rhino Abrams wheels. These things are held together by Yukon 1-ton axles - 60 front and 80 rear. They’re big but you’re going to need them for a build this massive.

Fab Fours completely outfitted this thing to give it that Halo look because you can’t have that normal Jeep look anymore if you want to build something that belongs in a Halo game. And the doors look very military. We didn’t want to do a half door but did a full surround to make it feel like you’re in a two-door chassis. It’s as if you’re out on the battlefield. When you’re out there going around in this thing it’s going to need some good suspension. We added a JKS mid-travel suspension with 2.5” top-of-the-line competition series FOX shocks, which are really going to pair well with their hydraulic bump stops. MagnaFlow went above and beyond and custom-fabricated the M41 SPNKR-inspired exhaust system, which is a fan favorite rocket launcher in the game. Baja Designs lighting is crucial when you’re out on the trail and running this thing so we outfitted it with proper lighting front, back, top and

underneath. There’s also a Pro Eagle mounted in the back as well as a Powertank which saves a ton of time when airing back up. We added a Warn winch and Factor 55 Ultrahook up front for recovery purposes. We also added all the performance goodies with a K&N intake, HP Tuners, Mishimoto coolers, PSC hydraulic steering and a set of R1 Concepts customengraved rotors. When you’re in it driving, it feels like a video game in the cockpit, so we went to PRP and got their Summit seats which they masterfully built to match Master Chief as well. It also has full internal comms headsets; everything from Rugged Radio; and a 10” Stinger Off-Road touchscreen display on there for cameras.

FORM AND FUNCTION IS A MUST What annoys me or irks me a lot is when a giveaway build looks as if they put a lot of lipstick on a pig and it’s all show with no go. Then, whoever wins the giveaway car is given this custom car with all these bells and whistles, and they’re like, “What am I going to do with this car now?!” So, when we built this Jeep, and like the cars before, they must have functional mods to become a real giveaway car in my eyes. The car has to be functional and drivable. This build has DOT-approved tires mounted on non-beadlock wheels because that’s not DOT. We chose every part of the Jeep to be functional for whoever wins it. They’ll be able to drive it and show up on these trails and not get laughed at. A gamer will enjoy its theme while an enthusiast will be able to wheel with us if they show up at an event. If you put a 42” tire on a rig, and you don’t have 1-ton axles on it you’ll eventually shatter that drivetrain. We built this thing like we’d build things for our brand partners. We used a Yukon Hardcore 60 axles up front and an 80 in the rear. The 80 is bigger than a Dana 60 axle, and it’s in the rear because of the weight of this vehicle. We always do shakedown runs to test it all out and this Jeep’s shakedown run was at Gold Mountain and Little John Bull up in Big Bear, where we wheeled for about eight hours straight. We went back home and only had to fix one thing on the Jeep and everything was good to go.

THE FAVES When it comes to my favorite mods, that’s tough to answer…I’d have to pick the two 1-ton axles since they don’t get the most credit but what you need to actually function when offroading. Another favorite mod is the exterior of the Jeep. The cool thing about the Patriot Liner is that the owner is a buddy of mine and he’s exmilitary, too, so it was cool working with him for this Gladiator. The new owner can expect to get it in one piece after all these media trips. It’s the ultimate off-road rig that has both performance and ruggedness. It has a lot of custom parts; no one else can get billet badges made like this. I hope they really enjoy it because it was truly a labor of love.

ure BASECAMP 3.0 SoCal started off with a few hiccups due to the fact that the majority of the staff and equipment were coming from Northern Cali and the drive/logistics of things was quite the task to coordinate and execute. But thanks to an amazing Pure group in NorCal, everyone hustled to make sure the event ran smoothly. Despite arriving 11 hours later on vendor/Pure setup day, the team was already greeted with a slew of amazing trucks and builds. It was amazing to see real individuals excited for the event!

Throughout the weekend, the Pure 4x4 team were able to feel and witness their guests truly enjoying themselves as they were really in their element. They’d hype the crowd and instantly feel the same energy reciprocated amongst the cheers and “LFG” chants. The conversations, jokes, relationships that were made and sheer amount of networking bred from the event is also a phenomenal vibe to witness. The SoCal venue, Holcomb Valley Ranch, was an ideal location, and the team loved hearing their guests express their love for the Ranch. Always stressing their “Pack-in, pack-out policy,” staff were proud to see that guests were learning, listening and were responsible campers. And guests came out from as far as New Jersey, Delaware and Florida.

FROM DIRT BIKES TO VINTAGE VWS I moved to Alabama from Toronto, Canada, in 1989 when I was 17. I’ve always been fascinated with off-roading - from riding dirt bikes to racing off-road RC cars. After college in 1992, I landed a job as a master automotive technician at our local Toyota dealership. In 2004, I opened up my own automotive repair shop. Since then I’ve restored vintage VW’s, and have been fabricating my own parts and accessories. I’ve loved VWs ever since I was a kid and had an RC dune buggy. Now, my wife and I own three vintage bugs, including the Burro.

THE MEMORABLE FIRST El Burro is actually the first off-road vehicle I’ve ever built. The best thing about it was that the vintage VW Bug could go pretty much anywhere! The Burro name was fitting for the Bug since it was our pack mule to the west Colorado and beyond. We wanted something different. I had a ’67 Bug that I was going to restore and sell, but instead, I decided to convert it for something unique. We had a trip planned to go to Colorado, and we thought it would be fun to drive the Burro on a 6,000-mile road trip from Alabama to Colorado and back. It never skipped a beat! We even got it up to 14k feet elevation at Imogene Pass.

EL BURRO COMES ALIVE Good thing there’s a huge market for off-roading VW’s because there were many parts, but I still had to fabricate a huge amount of mods for the Burro. We wanted to keep the entire Bug body and not go with the Baja Bug look. I did everything myself given I own my own shop and have been doing this for a living for quite some time. Everything from the suspension to the interior, bumpers, roof rack and body parts are all custom built. A FEW OF MY FAVORITE MODS ARE: 1. The custom A-Arm front suspension since I designed it from what I learned from building and racing RC cars 2. The Roof rack. It gives the vehicle a whole lot more storage 3. The Holley Sniper Fuel injection. When it was carbureted it was a pain to keep changing the jets at different elevations. The Burro is about to get a new heart transplant. I’m in the process of building a new engine that will be turbocharged to help with elevation and towing the trailer. I’m also going to be installing a locking rear differential to help with traction since we only have 2wd. The biggest challenge of the build was keeping everything reliable, especially when you’re out in the middle of nowhere.

ADVENTURING IN EL BURRO We mostly love week-long camping trips, but we also use it for our vacations from time to time. It’s so much fun to drive. On our trip to Colorado and back from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, we camped out of it for two weeks. It was the first major trip we took with the Burro and we had a blast. We ended up driving several of the mountain passes in the Ouray and Telluride area. But in all, we got to see pretty much the whole state of Colorado. The drive was uneventful thankfully and we got to see a lot of different scenery. We also love to drive and camp and explore the mountains of Tennessee since it’s only a 3-to 5-hour drive for us. We turned a lot of heads driving this thing off-road. Being only 2-wheel drive, you have to think ahead when on a narrow pass. Sometimes we would have to get a running start to get momentum going to make it up a steep grade. We can’t crawl like the 4x4s; that’s why I’m installing the locking diff. Other than that the Burro is very easy to handle off-road. Now I know why they drove VW’s off-road for years. I must say the 4x4 guys are super! We were in a group of Jeeps driving up one of the mountain passes in Ouray. They would all pull over for us so we wouldn’t lose momentum and have to stop. Don’t get me wrong, the Burro will still crawl up some of the steepest grades. We drove the Burro through some heavy mud and deep creeks and we still haven’t got to a point where we had to use the winch. 50

PLANNING SMARTER, NOT HARDER I always make sure the Burro is maintained and ready to go, it’s a very reliable vehicle. I sometimes drive it back and forth to work for days. But being a very unique vehicle, I always have to make sure I use parts from other makes of vehicles that are popular, so if we do have an issue while on our trips, I can pop into an auto parts shop and grab a spare if needed. I always carry some extra parts with us just in case. The Burro is equipped with tools, first aid, wool blankets, and some provisions just in case. But if the trailer is being towed behind us we’re set for anything!

ith a career in finance, Brian Lau of (@more.van.ever) needed a bit more adventure and excitement in his life. With a love for the great outdoors stemming from his childhood experiences in the Boy Scouts, he knew he needed to give into his yearnings to get back out into the wild, which is why he started his Instagram group called @sprinter.overland.trip, where he plans community events and trips for other like minded enthusiasts. Now he fuels his outdoor passion with his family in his custom 4x4 Sprinter Van!

THE BEGINNING It was an idea that was put together by Cody Foster (@xpeditionamerica), Steven Mary (@ lunchbox.overland), and myself Brian Lau (@ more.van.ever). Cody has 20 years of military experience training navigation courses and has a love for exploring. Steven is a professional chef with a great passion for cooking and camping. I love to organize events and bring a community together. We knew MB Sprinter owners were looking for adventure and thought the Sprinter Overland Trip would be a great opportunity to experience offroading with other like-minded Sprinter 4x4 owners that had the same desire to explore as us. The Sprinter Overland Trip occurs about every quarter, approx every 3 to 4 months.

THE PLANNING The most important factor is a schedule that works for all three partners. After we decide on a date, we announce it and start booking reservations and sponsor support. The location is scouted to ensure the trails are in good condition and campsite locations are available. Trip details that include an overview, gear list, and safety information are given to the attendees prior to the trip. Meals are planned and prepared by Chef Steven Mary and his crew. We also lineup a series of clinics and a photographer for the weekend adventure. We currently have a capacity of 40 vehicles. We have 3 partners, 1 photographer, and we often bring along additional crew to help with safety and cooking. All our marketing is done on social media and word of mouth. We have slowly established growth since our first trip. Every trip we have grown our convoy to about 8-10 vehicles, making sure we can still execute the trip with the principles and foundations it was built on. We started the trip in late 2020 with a dozen vehicles. Since then, we are on our 6th trip coming up in February 2022. Locations are primarily chosen by seasons. Typically if it’s a cold season we seek a warmer climate, and vice versa. We also look for areas that are suitable for the size of the sprinter vans. As for sponsors, we ask our personal vehicle build sponsors for donations and/or discount codes. In some instances, we get approached by companies to offer items to review or giveaway to participants. The first trip was very exciting. We didn’t know what to expect, or how the Sprinter drivers would handle the offroad elements. We were thrilled to see how successful it was and the great feedback we received. They really enjoyed the driving experience and the gourmet food! 56

THE ADVENTURES This is an “overland” trip which means there is a lot of driving involved. We travel to remote destinations on a three-day, two-night trip. All the meals throughout the weekend are provided so our attendees can enjoy the spirit of adventure, and not so much the planning. That part is left to us. We include multiple points of interest along the route. Drivers will get some challenges, but the trip carries a theme of exploration and community. This is especially seen at camp when everyone is reuniting or meeting new people at the campfire. We all learn, laugh, and share the love of the Sprinter Overland Trip experience.

THE FUTURE We are always evolving the events with the hope of improving them each and every time. We try concepts to see how they work out for our team, as well as the experience impact on our attendees. We’re also looking into new events that can grow from Sprinter Overland Trip. We currently have an expo in the works for Summer 2022, as well a navigation rally in the Fall of 2022. These are not only new and exciting for us, but we believe they will be a welcomed addition to the rapidly growing adventure van market. 58

THE BEGINNINGS OF A GREAT ADVENTURE My name is Shaun Freilich, and I’m the owner of Complete Customs in McKinney, TX. I was born in California and raised in West Texas, but I would visit California every summer and would often camp in Johnson Valley. As I got older, I purchased an RV and loved camping with my family and friends. I started wrenching on vehicles when I was five years old at my grandparent’s junk yard in Lucerne Valley, CA. My passion eventually carried over to me opening a custom car shop when I was 30 years old. The first off-road vehicle I built was my 2017 Toyota Tundra, and my favorite thing about that Tundra was the fully custom Mazzulla long arm suspension!

COMBINING WORK AND PLEASURE I was always building off-road vehicles through my shop, so eventually I decided to build the ultimate overlanding vehicle. I picked the Gladiator because it was new to the market, and I had been patiently waiting for Jeep to release it for several years. I have owned four-plus Jeeps since opening Complete Customs back in 2011. All of the Jeep builds are awesome, and I really enjoyed taking them off-road. I have also built some amazing partnerships over the years with some of the best manufactures in the off-road industry. So in the design phase of the vehicle, I first looked to manufactures we have worked with in the past and with this build I decided to combine some of my passions to come out with something different. I called the build the Traeger Gladiator for the obvious fact that it has a Traeger Pellet Smoker attached to the back and is fully functional!

All the work performed on my vehicles are done by the amazing team at Complete Customs! We’ve worked on many SEMA builds throughout the years and the biggest challenge was getting products in a timely manner. The build was designed to go off grid and disconnect from the everyday hustle of life. I love to BBQ, so adding the Traeger Grill was a must and is my absolute favorite mod on it. The cantilever mount for the Traeger Tailgater Grill is fully custom and built to fit the Leitner Active Rack System. We worked with Christopher Moos from Moos Craft to create the cantilever mount. I have loved cooking for the past 10 years of my life, and the thought of being able to cook in the middle of nowhere with nothing else going on around me sounded amazing! I’ve used it on the trails and camping several times and the response I get from other off-road drivers is awesome. It’s definitely something you don’t see everyday!

THE TRIPS OF A LIFETIME The most memorable trip was with my wife Courtney when we drove from Silverton, CO, to Lake City, CO, on Cinnamon Pass. It took us a full day to make the drive, and we enjoyed every moment of it. Seeing all the wildlife and history in between the two cities was an experience within itself. When it was time for lunch we found a stream right off the trails and set up shop! We purchased some filet mignon steaks, fresh local bread and fresh greens back in Durango before we headed out. So, I made some of the most amazing steak sandwiches on the trail. All the other people driving on the trail would pull up to us and tell us they could smell the steaks from miles back! They couldn’t believe we had a Traeger in the middle of the Colorado mountains and were cooking steaks! That is definitely a special day that we will talk about for many years to come! The most technical trail was in Moab, UT. Thankfully the rig didn’t suffer any major damage, but we did come back with a few battle scars! The 2.5” ICON Vehicle Dynamics Suspension set us up for success when on the trails providing plenty of travel to get across some of the more technical areas.

PREPARED PREPPER Preparation is key when going overlanding or even just for a quick day trip. You always need to make sure you have everything you need in case something doesn’t go as planned. I normally lay everything out the night before to make sure I didn’t forget anything, then I pack everything as organized as possible so I can find it when on the trails. Getting stranded is everyone’s biggest fear, especially if traveling off-road by yourself. You want to always make sure you have the basics on your rig like a WARN Winch, Monster Hooks and rope. All these items will come in handy if you get stuck. I would also always recommend some sort of communication radio. Depending how far off-road you’re traveling, most cell phones don’t work, so you can’t depend on them if something happens.

veryone knows the fastest way from point A to point B is a straight line, and for most Southern Californians, going to Las Vegas is just that….blasting through Interstate 15 as fast as legally possible to get to Sin City. Usually, one never really stops, except for Barstow or Baker for a quick refuel, Alien Jerky, or a quick bite at the Mad Greek restaurant. There are known offshoots, such as the Calico Ghost Town to lesser known places like the 80acre town of Nipton, CA. Having just returned from the 2021 SEMA Show, our “back in office” emails were suddenly interrupted for a quick trek back to Las Vegas. But this time, we took three days to head out with the crew and from Turn 14 Distribution / Pit + Paddock and other industry professionals to join them for their Drivers Project, which showed us we don’t always have to be in a hurry to get to Vegas.

Normally, the Pit + Paddock Drivers Project is a three-day road trip from L.A. to Monterey before heading to Reno, NV, and finishing in Las Vegas. The excursion combines modified cars and exotics, but this time it was a caravan of Adventure Rigs for their first-ever Drivers Project Off-Road through the desert of SoCal to Las Vegas. The Drivers Project is all about getting automotive enthusiasts together to enjoy the custom builds while doing some really cool stuff in between. This event provided enthusiasts with a chance to go the “long” way to Las Vegas, stopping at sites and areas not normally visited. The journey began at Advanced Clutch Technology Inc. in Lancaster, CA, where all participants were given a rundown of the drive and what to expect. The group - featuring a variety of trucks, Jeeps, and Broncos - began the expedition by driving through the Mojave desert until we made our first stop at the Mojave Air and Space Port, where we hung out and shot some quick photos. The next stop on the journey was at the Calico Ghost town. There, we spent some time exploring the silver mines, abandoned city and took a train ride around Calico. The day ended with the group meeting at our campsite nearby, where we had dinner and spent some time by the campfire.

DAY 2 Day two of Pit and Paddock’s Drivers Project OffRoad started at the famous Peggy Sue’s Diner in Yermo, CA, for breakfast before we drove to Baker, CA, to hit the trails on Mojave Road. On the Mojave Road, we made a stop at the Lava Tubes, which were naturally formed long ago by molten lava. The lava tube is located about five miles east of Kelbaker Road on the unpaved Aiken Mine Road. After, we made our way to the Aiken Cinder Mine and explored the abandoned equipment, taking advantage of the opportunity to shoot some photos. The next stop of the journey was at Rock Springs Loop Trailhead. We were greeted with lunch and got to see the abandoned Rock House built in 1929. After a long day, we headed back on the trail to make the trek to the next campsite.

DAY 3 Day three of Pit and Paddock’s Drivers Project Off-Road began at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant in Needles, CA. After grabbing breakfast, we headed to the city of Nipton to explore the town of 20 residents and checked out their art monuments. From there, we made our way to Vegas Off-Road Tours to jump in some Polaris RZRs for some fast and dusty off-road riding. After exploring the trails in the RZRs for a couple of hours, we finally headed to Vegas to close off the trip with a fantastic custom dinner experience at Vegas Test Kitchen.

IT ALL BEGAN ON A FARM I’m from Ivanhoe, NC, and I’m a machinist for General Electric Aviation. I grew up off-roading on a farm but I’d also work in the garage with my dad when I was little. I enjoyed watching him and learning from him when he would work on old muscle cars. On the farm, I’d ride 4-wheelers and older Jeeps, but this FJ Cruiser is the first build that I have ever done. The entire build was created for fun, but also to be able to go camping and off-roading with my family. I knew that Toyotas were very reliable vehicles on and off-road, especially the FJ Cruiser. This was my first time owning a Toyota, once I went for a test drive I knew this was the vehicle I wanted to build. It needed to really be made for overlanding. I enjoy being able to go off-road to get to camping sights with my family. We all enjoy hiking and exploring new spots and being able to spend time together.

REAP WHAT YOU SOW I had planned my build out by researching parts on the Internet and various forums keeping in mind the terrain I would be on and the load I’d be carrying. Also, I chose products that would be better suited for off-roading and that would be more practical for overlanding. I tried to do most of the work myself, but had to outsource some of the other work. The biggest challenge was putting it all together and organizing this entire build over the time frame of 4-6 months. I’m still not completely done as I change parts here and there, which all comes with the territory when you own purpose built vehicles. I find it extremely rewarding when you upgrade your vehicle and see how those parts come together to work on the trail. Some of my favorite additions so far are the Long Range Tank that helps the Toyota go twice the distance; the RTT (roof top tent) that allows my whole family to camp together; the LED lighting that tremendoulsy helps light the trails at night; and the Viair Compressor for airing up the tires after deflating for the trails. The next major modification that I am debating is doing a diesel motor swap or adding a supercharger kit to the current motor.

PUTTING IT TO WORK My favorite trip would have to be going to Uwharrie National Forest and the OHV Trails in Troy, NC. I was able to tackle the hardest trails there with the help of all the mods done to my vehicle. Old NC105, Linville Gorge Wilderness, in Marion, NC, are also great. I like that you can camp, hike miles of trails to see the river and the falls. Then there’s the beautiful Lake Marion and the fact that it all overlooks the Blue Ridge Mountains which is simply breathtaking when you see it in person. Concurring Uwharries was the most challenging trail I’ve taken the FJ on, but I got through it with the assistance of my Warn Winch on the steep ledges. The rig was damaged when I leaned into the wall; I put a dent in the door and scratched the mirrors, door handles and rock sliders. It’s a very difficult trail and it had my heart racing the whole time while on it. I love that feeling! 74

KEEPIN’ IT SIMPLE I like to keep things simple and writing down a camping list and always having a bugout bag of essentials ready to leave at any time for camping or for emergencies is a must have and what I usually suggest to others. I try my best to trail and off-road with other people and never like to do it alone as the “buddy system” is tried and true. Onboard, my head unit has 3D Maps, and I use the All Trails App to keep up with where I am, and where I have been. I also always have extra supplies and ways of communication in case something were to ever happen.
