sk any first-time car customizer about their experience and they’ll most likely respond with how exhilarating it was. Sure, there might have been a few bumps along the way, but when they saw the finished product, they’ll rant and rave about how they’ll do it all over again. They’ll also mention how they’re already planning their next build! Once you get started, it’s hard not to follow up with another and even more after that. As a healthy addiction, it’s a creative outlet for many and even a stress reliever for some. For John and Jan Counts, it was a lifelong dream to have a classic 1957 Chevy 3100 pickup truck and their dream finally came true thanks to a little help from DC and Marvel characters as well as the crew over at Trend Auto Repair. Ryan Walker was no stranger to car customization, but he was a newbie when it came to trucks. He wanted to step up in a

big way and knew he needed something that already commands attention in stock form. So, he went all out on his 2018 Ram 3500 Mega Cab that is literally dressed to the nines.

For Ford truck enthusiasts like Hunter Clark, finding and building a Dentside F-250 Crew Cab is the ultimate dream given how rare they are. But with a customizing-driven heart, he didn’t stop until he found the perfect one to complete his ultimate build.

We’ve got the deets on two of the nation’s biggest truck shows, the 34th Annual A&A Auto Stores Summer 4 Wheel Jamboree in Bloomsburg, PA and the notorious Daytona Truck Meet.

Nobody knows how addicting truck customizing is better than Robbie Bryant of Keg Media and Christopher Varner of Varnbilt Motorsports. or his first truck build, Ryan Walker didn’t hold back. His goal was to assemble a fully functional truck that could impress at shows as well as on the road and so “Black Tie Affair” was born. Ryan is no stranger to the customizing world. He first started modding vehicles with his brother 10 years ago, the 36-yearold entrepreneur details. In 2018, he built a DDR Motorsport Grullón GT8 kit car and then purchased the notorious “Limitless” build that same year, which was a 2016 SEMA build that has also graced our pages. He eventually sold it to fund something “bigger and better.”

I REALLY WANTED TO SEE HOW CRAZY WE COULD GO WITH IT BUT STILL MAKE IT A FULLY FUNCTIONING 4X4 AND DAILY DRIVER - ALL THE WHILE WINNING AWARDS AT BIG TRUCK SHOWS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. That’s how this Ram Mega Cab truck came into existence. “I really wanted to see how crazy we could go with it but still make it a fully functioning 4x4 and daily driver - all the while winning awards at big truck shows across the country,” Ryan details. As a self-proclaimed “Dodge guy,” his goal was to add “some crazy aspects” that haven’t been properly done on a truck of that size. He enlisted the help of the crew at KEG Media, who was instrumental in linking him up with all of his current sponsors and builder Elite Customs. With a clear vision in mind, he got to work with his team behind him and began what would be his biggest project to date.

To match the mega-size of the Ram, the suspension needed to have a higher-thanaverage lift. The Ultimate Air Ride 12”- 18” suspension gives the massive height that impresses at shows, while also providing a smooth ride on the streets. Combined with FOA shocks, a Wilwood big brake kit, and build-out by Elite Customs, the truck commands attention everywhere Ryan drives it. Performance enhancements that make it perform like a champ include a Flo~ Pro exhaust, AirDog Pure Flow filter, S&B intake system, PPEI tune, SCT Performance tuner and PSC performance steering.

The full fiberglass front and rear fenders aren’t normally seen on show trucks on this level, which is exactly why Ryan wanted to add them. As a favorite modification, the addition of the fenders gives it a different and sophisticated look that lives up to its classy moniker. In addition, Black Tie Affair was given suicide doors with shaved door handles that resemble some of the finest Italian sports cars. Interco Super Swampers 44-inches tall wrapped around American Force Jester wheels give it a proper stance to compete and set itself apart in the custom truck show scene. Adorning Black Tie Affair is a plethora of lighting accessories that light up the rig’s path come nightfall and adds to the overall sexiness of its exterior, along with the Rhino Hitch, Retrax bed cover and AMP Research power steps.

While no real challenges arose during the buildup of the truck, Ryan does admit that timing was a huge issue with parts being delivered. But once everything came in, the build was a breeze thanks to his support team. When the truck was unveiled at the 2019 SEMA Show, showgoers couldn’t stop complimenting him on its towering presence among the sea of other highly modified trucks and cars. “I think people were impressed with it, especially given it was my first build,” he admits. “I have had great reviews overall at shows across the country and have been lucky enough to take home a trophy every time.” And we totally get why as Black Tie Affair boasts more than $250K and is one of the most sophisticated builds we’ve seen to date!

A DO-ANYTHING FOUR-DOOR ’79 FORD F-250

or classic Ford truck enthusiasts like Hunter Clark, finding and building a Dentside F-250 Crew Cab is the ultimate dream as they are very rare. In fact, this is his second one given his first was not in buildable condition. When the Sturgis, Michigan-native found this ‘79 F-250, it only consisted of a cab and a frame. He then had to find a front clip and bed to complete the body.

Since the truck was basically a blank slate, Hunter saw this as an opportunity to make this truck something better than the original. Filling the void upfront, he purchased a 5.9L 12-valve 6BT Cummins diesel engine that he thought was ready to run, but the deal turned out to be too good to be true. After discovering water in the engine, Chad Lindsey (of Legendary Diesel Performance) tore it apart for a full rebuild.

Now back in the truck, the Cummins engine is fed by a custom tank and Fass Diesel Fuel Systems 200 GPH lift pump. The power has also been boosted by a compound turbo kit by Diesel Power Source, all while spent gases are released by a custom 4” exhaust with 7” stack in the bed. Power is pushed to the Dodge 47RH transmission and into the divorced NP205 transfer case. To equal length driveshafts then move power to the 2006 Ford F250 Super Duty axles. With help from his brother, Paul “Tyler” Clark at Clark and Smith Fab, this truck received a custom air bagged suspension that gives it up to 10” of lift. Making this possible, they used a suspension calculator on the Internet and Tyler drew up a front three-link along with a rear four-link in CAD, having everything cut out on a plasma table. The suspension now uses a set of Fox 2.0 reservoir shocks and 5,000-pound double convoluted airbags that are supplied air from an AccuAir ENDO tank, which is controlled by an e-Level management system.

Taking the truck to the next level, the exterior was finished out with a modern look. Runges Auto stepped in to smooth the body and coated it in Tri-Coat Pearl White, which was used with inspiration from Hunter’s 2013 F250 that has that same color. To further modernize the truck, Hunter added a set of 24x12 Fuel Off-Road FF75 forged wheels in gloss black and milled finish. They are covered in LT375/40R24 Nitto Trail Grappler M/T tires that help keep traction offroad and also ride quietly on the road. One of the key features of this truck is the fourdoor cab, which is a big space to fill. Hunter was lucky enough to find all the original door panels and then upgraded the seating with two sets of front seats from a ‘96 OBS Ford F-250 and covered them in Katzkin leather. On the dash is a set of Auto Meter gauges and a Pioneer double din head unit controls the JL Audio sound system. Helping to pilot this truck is an Ididit steering column and B&M shifter with Far From Stock bracket. Although these trucks are hard to come by, Hunter was able to find all the right pieces to build this incredible F-250. In the process, he was also able to make it his own with a modern twist. Since Hunter is a family man, this truck helps serve the purpose of hauling everyone around and also having the ability to play. Trucks like these are simply winners all around.

COMIC BO DREAMS 1957 CHEVY 3100

rizona natives John and Jan Counts’ 1957 Chevy 3100 pickup truck has a storied history - just like their 45 years of marriage. They lived the typical American dream in Arizona, with John working for the Maricopa County Department for 41 years (which he just retired from in 2021) after serving in the U.S. Navy for eight years as a Second Class Petty Officer. With an interest in trucks as a weekend hobby, the Counts bought the classic truck in 1980 from an airman at Luke Air Force Base and had big plans to restore it to its former glory. John enlisted his brother to help tear down the truck to restore its wiring, glass, wood bed and weather stripping. According to John, it still had the original straight-six engine, suspension and manual transmission. In 1983, the couple had the truck repainted from the original grey to a bold blue. They thoroughly enjoyed the pickup until 1995, when it, unfortunately, was vandalized. From then on, it was sadly parked in the garage until 2018. That was the year John realized what he wanted to do in his retirement and driving around in his beloved Chevy 3100 was what he wanted to do for the rest of his days. “John wanted to put his truck back together since he’d be able to take his grandkids to car shows since he was no longer working,” details Shawn Brown, owner of Trend Auto Repair, who helped the Counts restore the Chevy into the modern masterpiece it is today.

“His original intent was always to do a basic restoration, including a 4-wheel drive and automatic transmission,” Shawn adds. However that all changed after having John in the shop one day as they were all trying to come up with a design for the battery covers. “To help come up with a pattern, we asked John what hobbies he had and what his favorite things were. We would have never thought he’d say DC and Marvel comics,” he says laughing. John then went on to detail how his grandfather would take him every Sunday to a local pharmacy to buy a comic book for a nickel. His fondest memories were spending that Sunday afternoon reading the comics with his grandfather. That’s where the team got the idea for the Iron Man and Captain America battery covers and then it just escalated from there - the Thor 4-wheel drive shifter and dome light, light-up Justice League dash panel, Gotham City skyline in the kick panel, Aquaman tridents carved in the wood bed, Spider-Man steering wheel and webbing in the fan shroud, and the firewall featuring Venom and the Joker. Altogether, the total transformation of the pickup took about a year and a half and was worth every penny for the Counts.

While its comic book homage is definitely the highlight for everyone who sees the truck, Shawn mentions that his favorites include the upgrade from a 6-cylinder engine to a 350 engine with overdrive and adapting the frame to the 1979 full-size Blazer axles and leaf springs to make it a more functional 4-wheel drive. Thanks to all the unique customizations, John had a truck he never dreamed of having. With the fabrication going above and beyond what he ever imagined or knew he wanted, the pickup is his prized vehicle. Everyone who sees it is blown away by its uniqueness and attention to detail that is admittedly hesitant to really drive it as much in favor of keeping it in its pristine condition. But because it’s something he wants to share with others, he does plan on slowly showing it off more in the coming years.

or the majority of people, driving a new, stock vehicle out of the dealership is an exhilarating feeling. But for a customizer, it’s the start of something bigger and better. No one knows this feeling better than Christopher Varner of Varnbilt Motorsports. Growing up, his dad ran a few diesel repair businesses and built race cars and race boats on the side. Christopher quickly fell in love with the automotive world and the passion only burned brighter as he got older. “Since I was younger, I was never interested in driving or working on anything that was stock,” he admits. “I always wanted to customize anything I have ever owned.” Thanks to his interest in custom vehicles, he’s now making a career out of his passon, running a Ford, Lincoln, Hyundai, Nissan and Honda automotive franchise while building vehicles for fun after hours. In addition to all that, he’s one

of the founders of the Atlantic City Truck Meet, which is one of the latest truck shows to hit the East Coast. While some might think being overly involved in automotive culture to that degree would wear one out too soon, it’s actually what drives Christopher and his afterhours projects, including this 2017 Ford F-450. He and his crew designed the truck to be a great all-around daily driver, show vehicle and hauler for transporting other projects across the country. Because it was going to be a part-time towing rig, Christopher realized that he needed a ride that was known for being a reliable and capable work horse. For him, the Ford dually more than lived up to his expectations. And because he loves black trucks with gold accents, his vision was set and all that was needed were parts and man hours to bring it to life.

With a great relationship with TIS Wheels, Christopher knew right from the start that the dually needed a fresh set of their wheels for a proper stance and paired them with an aggressive looking set of 37x13.50R26 Gladiator tires. To make the exterior pop he opted to go with a Mimaki-designed TIS vehicle wrap. “We’ve been working with them since 2016 when we built our first 2017 F-350 for SEMA and knew this project also needed to roll on their wheels.” To get the specific look he had in mind, many of the parts had to be built in-house, which made the process somewhat lengthy to get everything just right. The suspension needed a lot of fabrication to get its height optimal for daily driving and hauling performance. The set up he went with was a custom-built 4.5-8.5 Air Ride kit, 4-link rear and 3-link front suspension, complete with KING shocks coated black and anodized gold to match the exterior’s color scheme. Exit 74 Fabrication helped with all the CNC-machined parts, making sure the fitment was on point.

To bolster the performance numbers, the F-450 gets a boost thanks to some PPEI tuning and P1 Race Parts exhaust system. The BAMF LED rock lights add some flair to the rig while lighting the way during night hauls, in addition to its one-off Varnbilt badging on the rear tailgate and the fender emblems. In the end, all the extra hours needed to fabricate everything paid off when Christopher first laid eyes on the finished project a few weeks after starting. Although not the wildest custom to date for him (or even the most challenging), the Ford came out classy and sleek and is currently servicing him as his daily driver in addition to being his tow pig for the upcoming show season.

obbie Bryant is an industry influencer when it comes to helping create some of the most impressive builds in the scene. Robbie and his crew at Keg Media are highly sought after year after year given their vast knowledge of what it takes to create a show-winning ride coupled with an extensive list of aftermarket manufacturer support. He’s been around for quite some time and his legacy only grows each year thanks to noteworthy projects he helps bring to life and the many that have graced the pages of this magazine since its beginning. Over the last 20 years in the aftermarket automotive world, he’s seen so many trends come and go that he can literally say he’s seen it

all. But one thing that will never go out of style is a well-thought-out concept, he mentions. “Our years of experience in automotive design has definitely helped keep us in the trendsetter category with our builds,” he adds. Every year the custom truck scene is growing and the creativity and varying styles on builds is ever-changing. Robbie admits that he’s also learned not to pay too much attention to what other people are doing. For him, that’s only a distraction and can actually hinder your own progression. “Keep your eyes and mind focused on your own build,” he asserts. “Then you’re never following the pack, you’re leading it.”

Like every other builder, he does care about achieving that “wow” factor, but he doesn’t like to go too over the top with his personal builds. Instead, he’d rather have a “nice, clean look” that’s modest when it comes to modifications. “Sometimes, less is more,” he admits. This is the case for his own Chevy Silverado 1500. He instantly knew that he needed to create something for himself once he saw the new body style come out and immediately fell in love. The new body lines and sleek front end were perfect for his creative vision and once it was purchased, he went right to work on his own custom ride, using the same building techniques he uses for clients of Keg Media. “I called up my buddy Justin, owner of Cognito Motorsports, to see if he wanted to team up and have it in his booth at SEMA that year,” he says. “Of course he was down, as we’ve done many booth builds together, and we later debuted it in their booth at the 2019 SEMA Show.” With a specific look in mind, he wanted to use Troll Blue from Prismatic Powders for the suspension. “I knew it would look great and no one at the time had really done that color. It complemented the factory Satin Steel Metallic paint perfectly.” Another big thing that he wanted to look and fit just right was the bumpers. For him, every bumper at the time looked like it was tucked behind the long front fender, but he wanted to hide that.

“The front end grille and headlights were sleek, but that fender threw the truck off for me. I called up my buddy Cody of Chassis Unlimited as he just recently got into building some greatlooking bumpers. His vision and mine were the same and he developed a killer bumper to hide that long front fender and really complete the sleek look of the front end.” Once those two things were perfected for Robbie (and his partner in crime, wife Keena), it was time to finish his build. Since it was going to be shown in Cognito Motorsports’ booth, the 1500 benefits from their 8” lift setup, which is complemented by American Force Wheels - another company Robbie likes to usually collaborate with. “Our friends at Fury just came out with a 15.50 wide 35” tire and we knew for sure we had to showcase that. Bernard and Alicia at Alea Leather helped with a fresh look on the interior. Bernard always designs something special on my personal builds.” Then, to help make his Chevy one of the cleanest rides around, his buddy Jarrod Muck and the crew at Cali Customs OKC did all the wrenching to bring his rendering to reality. Thanks to all his great connections, Robbie admits that practically all of his personal builds are seamless and this Chevy was no different. “I think this build is right up there with all my past builds. Super clean. Just the right amount of jazz.” With so many compliments on the look, Robbie knew he knocked another project out of the park. “People really loved the clean look and the Prismatic Powders Troll Blue on the suspension and wheels.” While Robbie is always busy with Keg Media and his various clients, right now he’s working on a Toyota Tacoma currently on 44” Interco Boggers wrapped around 28x16 TIS Forged wheels. “Lots of Fab Fours accessories on this one and we call it ‘Don Taco’ and hope to grace the cover of this fine magazine with it. It will debut in the TIS Forged booth at SEMA 2021 thanks to Myles and John.”

2021 DAYTONA TRUCK MEET

ombine hot rides, fun in the sun and live entertainment and you’ve got yourself the most anticipated truck show of the summer – Daytona Truck Meet 2021! The largest truck show in the world was held the weekend of June 11th through 13th as more than 35,000 spectators, 100s of vendors and more than 5,000 custom trucks from all over the nation came together at the Daytona International Speedway. Some of the sweet rides out in attendance included everything from low riders and squatted trucks to sky-high rigs and mud bogging mud trucks. Everyday was a huge party and Daytona Beach was an amazing place to be that weekend in June. With so much to see, live entertainment, a burn out pit and more, it was a great way to kick off summer.

2021 4WHEEL JAMBOREE

he 34th Annual A&A Auto Stores Summer 4 Wheel Jamboree was held at the Bloomsburg Fairground in Bloomsburg, PA on July 9th – 11th. The weekend was a truck lover’s dream with non-stop action from the morning to the nightly fireworks show! Attendees were able to take Monster Truck rides, cruise the show in The General Tires Cruise Lane, buy parts from A&A Auto Stores and Jack Williams tires, Dyno their trucks, compete in a burnout competition, watch insane Mega Truck racing, and were also treated to back to back nightly concerts from Blackberry Smoke!

Ultimately, the two trucks that stood out were Daryk Pitzer’s 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 for LFTD&LVLD and Doug Avery’s 1985 Toyota SR5 Pickup with a V8 Chevy 350 crate motor!
