EDITOR’S NOTE ISSUE 112
2
021 has passed by in a blink of an eye and for this winter issue of DUB, we bring to you a wide variety of custom creations by some creative and experienced builders from across the country for your enjoyment. First up is Houston-based 713 Motoring, where we caught up with Ashton Barnes on the rebirth of the shop and the state of the custom scene today. Having built hundreds of custom rides from celebrities, to entrepreneurs overseas and local car enthusiasts, 713 Motoring knows what it takes to get the job done. Just up the way in Dallas, we checked in on Richard Rawlings’ badass Polaris Slingshot that looks completely different from other Slingshot builds we’ve seen. The Gas Monkey Garage team really took it up a notch when it came down to building a unique Slingshot that’s capable on the streets and dirt!
Home-based in Spring Green, WI, Mike and Jim Ring, collectively known as the Ringbrothers, need no introduction. Their creations have graced the pages of this magazine and countless others over the years. The Ringbrothers are always wowing us with their impressive builds and for this issue, they have us green with envy with a few of their latest and greatest four-wheeled creations. We spoke to Mike to talk about how customizing has really grown since the pandemic and what’s up with the shop! Then we head over to Las Vegas where we caught up with a pair of builders with some head-turning custom rides that would make anyone a fan. If you love retrofit builds then John Condor’s masterfully built 1972 Chevy K5 Blazer is what you’re looking for! When you think of Lincoln Continental you may quickly imagine a mid-60s black, 4-door convertible on white walls sitting low to the ground. But that’s not the case for Tuckey Checchia’s 13th build, with his 2017 Lincoln
Continental Reserve that’s low and steadily turning heads wherever he goes. It’s the culmination of his years of experience working on various custom rides from different niches that resulted in his masterpiece. Rounding out the trip was a stop by El Segundo, CA, for a private show at Mattel. The Hot Wheels Legends tour stop was the place to be if you’re looking to see every kind of custom car under the rainbow. Check in to see who won and will have the ride immortalized as a collectible die-cast Hot Wheels! We’ve been around the block once or twice with Ken but this was the first time we featured some of his personal custom rides when he was at the helm of DC Shoes. Check out what the Head Hoonigan In Charge was rolling back in 2005. So kick back and let our pages continue to inspire your next build...enjoy 112!
Because you never know what you might get into. Whether you’re cruising the city streets or navigating off-road terrain, the Atturo Trail Blade X/T lets you enjoy the best off all possible rides. That’s because it has the savage styling, smooth performance, and hungry tread that make for pure driving pleasure, wherever you roam. Where will you go with Atturo?

efore Ken Block was known for his wild driving Gymkhana YouTube video series or as a rally driver for Hoonigan Racing, we knew him as the main man behind the beloved DC brand. That’s right, we featured Ken way back in the early days of our magazine - Issue 26 in 2005 to be exact. Since then, he’s gone on to achieve great things, and in Issue 26, he was already setting the bar with his bespoke rides - a 2002 G-Wagon Benz G500 sitting on 22s and Bentley Continental GT which was laced out with 22” HREs. Ken also showcased his highly modded 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STI and 2005 WRX STI GB3000.

It gives me the rawest feeling of wanting to go as fast as I can.” While that was his first DUB feature, it certainly wasn’t his last and we’ve been fortunate to catch up with Mr. Block a few times!

GAS MONKEY GARAGE’S VISION OF THE 2021 POLARIS SLINGSHOT R
I like ‘em. They’re comfortable for the person that may not be as comfortable on a motorcycle. They’re a great wind in your hair, bugs in your teeth type experience.

hen it comes to having fun with anything on wheels, Richard Rawlings of Gas Monkey Garage is known not only for his outlandish builds but his wild antics behind the wheel as well. All this was displayed on Discovery Channel’s Fast ‘N Loud TV show, which first burst onto television screens in 2012. Though the show lasted for numerous seasons, production is now over. As everything evolves with time, the crew of Gas Monkey Garage is trying their hands at many different new projects to propel them into the next era. Having an open mind, Richard is always rotating what’s in the garage to suit his everchanging taste. Year’s back, he got a Polaris Slingshot as it looked like something he could enjoy on the road. Richard exclaimed, “I like ’em. They’re comfortable for the person that may not be as comfortable on a motorcycle. They’re a great wind in your hair, bugs in your teeth type experience.”

“You can really have a good time. Then you have creature comforts with a stereo and what have you. And now they have them with a 5-speed or an automatic. Kind of like the motorcycle world, it’s highly customizable. There’re many groups all over the nation that I’ve met, and they’ve all got their own tricks… Then you have your guys that travel around, and they got their racks on for extra luggage… It’s also a lot of fun because you can talk to the person that’s with you. They’re right there with you and not behind you. So, it allows for a lot better experience when you’re traveling with someone,” said Richard. Seeing all the possibilities of this threewheeled roadster, Richard teamed up with Polaris to have his crew customize this 2021 Slingshot R to display at the SEMA Show. When asked about the ideas for this vehicle, Richard said “I took a look at everything that’s out there and I knew that I wanted to do something in a little bit of a different direction. I’m more of an adventure/travel guy and so when I build something for myself, I want it to have form and function.” “I’m only going to jump into things where we can do what we want… We never really built the same thing twice. We’re not Camaro guys or Mustang guys or what have you. Everything we build is completely different. I’m cool with having a challenge. We decided I had carte blanche, which is always dangerous. I don’t know who would give me carte blanche to do whatever I want but that’s where we are.” “Our Slingshot has 35-inch mud terrains and we built all of our suspension. We rebuilt the rear axle or swing arm if you will and extended it out. We ran a full exoskeleton on the body and above that, we have a roof rack with all the lights. This is not a vehicle for off-road or whatever, but it is a vehicle built to travel and to do more adventures and to get out there on the smaller roads. It has the room to put in all your luggage and it also has backup cans of water and gas. We went with Fox shocks that go through the front of the hood and we have a lot of articulation and travel in our suspension.”

“We took this thing down to the bare frame. We changed the entire way in which the motor compartment looks. For lack of a better term, we made it our own. We gave this thing an attitude that’s intended to scare people to death. I’ve always said if it doesn’t scare women and children, then it’s not that much fun. It’s very fast and a lot of fun.” “With a lot of the custom Slingshots I’ve seen, you’re going to be worried about a pothole, let alone a farm-to-market road. In essence, it’s the three-wheel version of my Mustang.” Referring to his ’68 Shelby Mustang that 38

was lifted to fit off-road tires and is a clone of a car in the Thomas Crown Affair movie. This is one of the most prized vehicles in his collection and it is interesting that he decided to take styling cues from it for this Slingshot. When asked about other mods, Richard stated, “it comes with a killer Rockford Fosgate sound system already and I used my time and effort for utilitarian purposes. It was built to stay in tune with cruising Highway 101 and hanging out by the beach and going to eat tacos. Hit PCH or hit Florida, go down through the keys, head up through Colorado,

that’s the ideology. You got those guys that will stick their nose up when a Slingshot comes by, but I guarantee you the people in that Slingshot are having more fun, so get you some of that!” Whether you dig these vehicles or not you have to give it to the team for adding their own unique touch to this project. Gas Monkey builds are never boring, and this is just another example of that. So, what’s next? Who knows, as things change with Richard at a rapid pace. We’ll just have to wait and see what the crew has up their sleeves.

13 Motoring is no stranger to the pages of our magazine. We’ve featured the notorious Texas customizing business before in Issue 56, and we thought it was time to catch up with them! A lot has changed for the Houston-based shop since then. With strong relationship ties and new blood infused into the brand, 713 Motoring has continued to remain a prominent force in the aftermarket automotive scene for 20 years. Throughout all the changes in the game, the executive leadership from OG veteran Ashworth Barnes has remained consistent. 713 first started when a group of high school friends began selling accessories out of a garage in Hiram Clarke on the Southside of Houston. Now 20 years later, those humble beginnings gradually grew into a small, local business before transforming into a major force in the automotive aftermarket industry. Run by Ashworth Barnes, the shop continues to be a notable name in the scene as it strives to push the limits on vehicle customization and customer service into an elevated art form. THE REBRAND In 2017, we rebranded our identity for a fresh start and built a new contemporary Westheimer location. With diversity in mind, I assembled a new team composed of different ethnic backgrounds and expertise in different fields besides automotive. With the help of Iyo Visual, the revamp is the new brand identity that you see today. That three-headed monster overseeing it all consists of AK Manesh, Mark Hernandez and myself. 713 has evolved over the years by continuing to add services to make a more complete customization boutique store that specializes in automotive design. When we first started, we were originally just selling wheels. 20 years later, we are doing complete project vehicles. Since the last DUB feature, we have a completely new team, fresh executive faces, a new retail store location, an off-site private garage, a new collision center and a whole lot more custom cars and experience. The business has grown exponentially over the years, being able to survive and thrive in this business is an accomplishment in itself. 713 has been fortunate enough to create a nationwide brand synonymous with high-end, quality custom looks.

CONNECTED My perception of where the car game is right now is that you can easily connect with people all over the world through social media, so everyone feels as if they can customize their own cars. Although connecting and networking through socials have made a lot of pipelines visible, it also has many drawbacks. The biggest drawback of social media and the Internet is that the consumer cannot always trust the validity of the parts sold and if they are actually applicable. This is why it’s much safer to deal with an expert in your area that you can trust. The biggest trend I’m seeing right now is in wrapping vehicles. Vehicle wraps have taken the aftermarket automotive industry by storm in the last five years. The ease of installation and low cost, not to mention how it totally transforms a vehicle, make it a non-permanent alternative to changing the value of a vehicle. The amount of colors available and the ability to print on a wrap makes it incredibly versatile and a blank canvas for creativity.

These days, customers are coming in for classic cars. In Houston, there has been a resurgence of old-school muscle and a legendary strip in the area has become the scene that makes everyone want to bring their cars out. It’s a great thing for the city to see a comeback of old-school nostalgia in this Houston neighborhood. Everyone is adding wheels, engine mods and aftermarket audio upgrades for connectivity between devices. Right now, we have a ton of cars in the shop, including four current Lambo projects and three Rolls-Royce builds. We get everything, and I mean everything. Bikes, ATVs, Vanderhalls, Slingshots, lifted trucks, off-road vehicles...you name it! This is one of the unique things about 713, we can shine on any project.

GOING GREEN WITH THE RINGBROTHERS WORDS: KRISTIE REAL AND MIKE RING PHOTOS: COURTESY OF THE RINGBROTHERS
M
any car customizers grow up in the automotive world, having family members teach them the ropes or friends who take them to shows. Jim and Mike Ring are brothers who were born with a passion for working on cars, and they’ve made it their family business. As cofounders of Ringbrothes out of Spring Green, WI, the two have carved out quite a niche for themselves, creating one-off unique rides.
50
We recognize that we are fortunate in that sense though – it’s been a tough few years in a lot of ways for many people. The next few builds we’ll be announcing are a ’69 Charger for a race car driver from New Zealand, and our most aggressive K5 Blazer build to date. Most of our Blazers have been pretty conservative, but this one will almost be like a Monster Truck.
As their skills grew more precise and their vehicles list grew, the two created an automotive empire that includes producing and designing aftermarket parts, building iconic street machines and working on cars in their auto body shop. Every SEMA, their builds are highly anticipated and this year is no different...read on to find read on to find out why (as told to us by Mike).
What’s your methodology when it comes to customizing a vehicle for a client? It really depends on the level of the build. Some mild retromods are pretty straight forward and we can figure out what the client wants in a phone meeting or over a few conversations. Others require lots of design work, revisions and heavily customized parts. Those can take months of back and forth before we even begin building.
What are you guys up to, and what projects have you guys been working on during the pandemic? Oddly enough, we’ve been busier than ever. I guess when car enthusiasts spend so much time at home, they start dreaming up new projects. We’ve been getting lots of commissions for builds and orders for parts.
Which one of you handles what in terms of builds? Jim and I are both involved in the project from start to finish. When it comes to the hands-on stuff, he handles wiring while I do a lot of bodywork. We have an entire team here who are involved in every other aspect of the build too.
MAGAZINE 2021
Best advice to those looking to customize their own rides? Don’t be afraid to ask for advice. Reach out to the experts you know in each field. Call your local body shop, or engine builder or paint guy and find out what they like or don’t like. They have decades of experience you just can’t get when doing a home project. What sort of rides has your shop been seeing a lot of lately? The K5 Blazer has really taken off since we did our first one a few years ago. We unveiled “Seaker” at SEMA in 2018 and have built about six of them since. Prices have gone up, too – they seem to have become really popular for everyone. What are usually top mods that you always add to your builds? We always widen the body a little bit these days. Gives the builds a little nicer look, but also helps fit wider tires more naturally.
VALKYRJA 1969 CHEVROLET CAMARO Valkyrja just screams “power” when looking at it. Who was this built for and what was the goal of the build? We built it for a young man in Belgium. It was built for outright speed and power. He wanted to bring a bit of aggressive American muscle to Europe, and we think it did that well. His Dad has a Bugatti Veyron, and they said it feels faster than that. How did the name come about? The Customer actually chose the name for this one. The Valkyrja were figures in Norse mythology. How do you go about choosing the right exterior color for your builds, such as the different shades of green we are showcasing in this Issue? Jim’s favorite color is green, so I’m sure that’s played a factor, but we never set out on a build with a color in mind. We always say the car will choose its own color. Near the end, when we’re spraying out samples, one of them just makes sense so we go with that. The owner obviously has the final say, but many have trusted our judgment on this. Having BASF paint helps as well – whatever color we do land on always looks amazing with their stuff. How is building a car for a customer different from building one for yourself? When you’re building for yourself, there are no rules, nothing holding you back. With customers, there are always certain constraints. For the most part, our customers have always been great about trusting us, but if money or time were no issue, I’m sure we’d have a few changes on each project.
What trends have you started that you see trickling down to other builders? We’re proud of the parts we make and are always excited to see them on other builds. Some of our heroes in the industry use our hood hinges or door handles or shift knobs that’s always cool to see. What customizing trends do you see happening in the next couple of years? A lot of builds are becoming much tamer in a good way. More OEM+ instead of overdone. We love those kinds of projects. Really, just a modern interpretation of an old style. A great example is that it’s becoming more acceptable to have visible wires or hoses in the engine bay. It makes them feel much less sterile. Let’s talk about these Five rides you’ve recently built. First off, how did you name each? Lots of times the owner will name the build. Other times it’ll come from a story from the time we’re building at. Each car has a bit of a personality and the name just fits that. MAGAZINE 2021

ESPIONAGE 1965 FORD MUSTANG Has a very military aircraft feel to it and out of the group has the most horsepower. What does it feel like to hit straight away in this? This car is very fast. It’s all carbon fiber so it’s lighter than stock, but it’s got a really aggressive engine. The car could make 1,000 horsepower all day, but we bumped it down to 800 for usability. No one has asked for the extra 200 yet. Why the name Espionage? The owner lives in Russia, so it seemed fitting.

COUGAR 1968 MERCURY COUGAR The Cougar looks somewhat of a sleeper (comparatively speaking) with its subtle details. What was the goal for this build? The owner had a ’68 Cougar when he got married and wanted to bring one back into his garage with some modern amenities, performance and reliability. We obviously went above and beyond on fit and finish as well. It is a nice build that can be used every day.

FUTURE’S 1971 CHEVROLET K5 BLAZER What was the inspiration behind this build? This was the second one we actually built. We did another K5 Blazer before this called Seaker that sold on Bring A Trailer which Future saw. He wanted something similar but built to his own tastes. So that first one was the inspiration but the specs on this was all him. Looks like the Blazer’s suspension and chassis would make it handle perfectly both on and off-road? Ya, that one has a full Roadster Shop chassis and new suspension so it drives great! Realistically, it likely won’t be used for any hardcore off-roading, but it’s plenty capable.

GRINCH 1970 CHEVROLET CAMARO What is the most unique feature of this build? The build was a relatively simple one in terms of design, but very high quality, fit and finish. I love how the paint came out and the front “Grinch” badge looks cool too. What kind of driving/driver was the Grinch built for? We didn’t overpower this one so it’s really usable. You could drive Grinch every day if you wanted to.

he late 60s and early 70s were a great time for sportier full-size off-road SUVs such as the International Scout and Ford Bronco. In 1969 Chevy introduced its smallest full-size SUV, the K5 Blazer, which quickly started outselling its more established competitors solidifying its place in history. Fast forward to now and the American classic is now a sought-after base for customizers looking to breathe new life into the storied SUV. John Condor is one such customizer, seeing potential in the K5 he fondly remembers his grandfather owning. The nostalgia of the K5 coupled with the family connection has made it the perfect platform when it came down to choosing a new vehicle to dress up. Growing up in Las Vegas, NV, John knows the glitz and glamor all too well given the City That Never Sleeps is his playground. He went from fixing up VWs to imports before switching over to 4x4s, so he’s accustomed to wrenching on all styles of rides. “I’ve been around different car clubs since I was 16, so I’ve seen it all,” he details about his background.

For this retrofit, he decided on a K5 Blazer so that his daughter could ride along when he’d hit the town for a cruising session. After attending the infamous Chevy-only truck show Dinos Git Down in 2017, he knew exactly how he wanted it to turn out when it was all said and done - slammed to the ground and barely gliding over the pavement. As soon as he bought the shell in Cali, he immediately dropped it off at Airth Defined Hot Rods in Vegas for the restoration.
To get the dropped stance proper, he installed a full AccuAir ENDO CVT air bag set up and paired it with a Porterbuilt Stage 3 suspension for more performance and comfier ride. The wheel wells are filled with 20” Detroit Steel Wheel Delrays wrapped in Nitto NT555G2 tires. With the stance already taken care of, performance was the next focus. John went with an LS3 engine with 6-speed automatic transmission, custom Magnaflow exhaust by 6651 Customs in Vegas and Wilwood brake
system and their Hydroboost upgrade kit. A Vintage Air climate system and Vintage Air Front Runner drive system were also installed to eliminate the kind of harmonic vibration that can often destroy a conventional engine drive bracket. Perfection and attention to detail don’t happen overnight when you’re building a custom at this level. John had to wait four long years until he and his daughter were able to cruise in his beloved K5 Blazer. Now, his favorite part is seeing people’s reactions to it when they see him behind the wheel. When he’s not taking it out for quick spins in Sin City, he’s showing it off at various events, where it’s admired by show-goers. “It’s definitely the cleanest build that I‘ve done right now. But stay tuned for more because I have something else planned for the near future that’s going to be as big!”

our teenage years are very impressionable. It’s a vulnerable age, where you are potentially introduced to lifelong passions. For Tuckey Checchia, he was 16 years old when he was first exposed to automotive culture. He vividly remembers being introduced to the game by a friend’s older cousin, who showed him the ropes to building a “beautiful, yet powerful, ride.” Of course, he soon immersed himself into the culture, learning the basics of customizing. Every chance he got, he’d attend car shows, truck runs and car meets to learn more about the art and culture of customizing. Today, he has 13 builds to his name and according to him, his latest one is the most unique build he’s created. When you think of the Lincoln brand, a murdered-out, classic Continental with suicide doors might come to mind. It’s a storied vehicle that when fixed up with modern amenities can be just as head turning as the latest Ferrari or Lambo. Since Tuckey likes to be different and create unique elements on his rides, he needed something totally different for his build than the usual modern options.
I knew choosing the Lincoln would bring about a challenge as I haven’t seen anyone build one. But I knew I could bring the beauty of this 2017 Lincoln Continental Reserve shine through my creative vision for it.
“When I saw the Lincoln for the first time, I was curious about it,” he admits. “My first thought was, ‘What’s that?’ I hadn’t seen a Lincoln Continental before.” That’s when he knew it was going to be his next project. Although not the nostalgic classic everyone loves, the modern Continentals aren’t what you would expect when it comes to show cars, but Tuckey didn’t care. “I knew choosing the Lincoln would bring about a challenge as I haven’t seen anyone build one. So once he signed the ownership papers, he wasted no time and got to work. Having always admired the aesthetics of VIP cars, he wanted to follow the fad but add in an American twist to the look. For those not familiar with VIP styling, it’s a tuning look commonly used on Japanese luxury cars, which feature big wheels, low offsets that are flush, a lip kit or body kid and slammed to the ground.

To get the look just right, the first mod he added was a set of AG Wheels, which is also his favorite mod. “I had my wheels custom fitted, specifically for how my cars would sit when I aired out. I get a tremendous amount of compliments on my wheels.” He wrapped them in Atturo tires for that perfect stance. To achieve being slammed, an AirLift Performance 3P Management Pack with two Flo 28” tanks and Viair 485 Gen.2 compressor were added. For better performance, he went with a Steeda cold air intake and their Proflow blow-off valve.

When it came to exterior mods, Tuckey kept it simple but unique with a stained glass design roof wrap. Inside, there are diamondstitched floor mats with more coming soon, he admits. Audio features a custom enclosure with Rockford Fosgate 12” T1 sub and a Power 1,000W amp. As a show car, the Lincoln is far from finished and he has tons of other mods to include in the near future. Despite its unfinished status, he still takes it to car shows and loves cruising on the weekend in it. He admits to relishing in all the compliments he gets when driving the Lincoln, which gets a lot more praise than his highly customized 2012 Dodge Charger he previously built before this one. “The Lincoln is just starting to hit the show circuit. I find it is hard for some to judge it since it doesn’t fit the norm.” But he doesn’t care because he’s passionate about his Lincoln and truly admires its “originality, quality and attention to detail (just look at my sunroof).” 72

he Hot Wheels Legends Tour is one of the world’s biggest traveling car shows that attracts new talents in automobile engineering and design. The tour also awards the best with die-cast immortalization. The Hot Wheels Legends Tour started in 2018 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the brand and now includes several stops in different states of the US, and for this year, the show was live-streamed to other countries. At each stop, the show’s judges carefully examined custom-built cars by local builders and marked them based on three factors; authenticity, originality and garage spirit. Hot Wheels held the final stop in its 2021 Legends Tour on Saturday, Oct. 9th at the Hot Wheels Global Headquarters El Segundo, CA. This year, the tour is a combination of physical and virtual events while also featuring a wide mix of vehicles that reflect LA car culture, including Lowrider, classics, and one-off builds.
