ll custom builds start out as visions. The builder first visualizes his perfect vehicle and then goes out and sets things in motion to make that vision a reality. Jhulio Tadeo of MC Customs is one master visionary and this time around, he envisioned a killer widebody Lexus LX570 for one of his clients, MLB player Robinson Cano. Tadeo knew it had to have a menacing demeanor while exuding luxury which exemplifies the Lexus brand. Topo, better known as The Widebody King, has been fascinating car fans worldwide with his widebody creations. His latest vision was a widened Ford F-250 that’s slammed low and booming with massive bass thanks to it’s Kenwood eXcelon audio products.

Dave Doetsch had a vision of a postapocalyptic world where zombies walked the earth which inspired his “Project Infected”. The bright green Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is the rig you want to have in case “The Walking Dead” became a real life scenario. Timeless Kustoms envisions perfection every time they set out to build a new vehicle. “Vicious” may have been originally built in a different era, but this timeless Mustang is as modern as it gets with a 1,000 horsepower beast of an engine! NFL champion Cliff Avril had his vision in the closing weeks of the regular season in December 2016. He dreamed of a plan to live out one of his biggest car-enthusiast adventures - enter the goldRush Rally with his custom designed Dodge Challenger Hellcat, which he and Z Designz worked on for 6 months! AUTONEWSWIRE AUTOMOTIVE NEWS PIRELLI, INFINITI AND “PROJECT BLACK S” Infiniti and Pirelli have partnered together for Infiniti’s “Project Black S,” which explores the potential of a future performance grade for the car manufacturer. The project will include a hybrid powertrain that could really enhance the performance of their Q60. According to Tommaso Volpe, Director of Infiniti Global Motorsport, the collaboration will utilize Pirelli’s motorsport and automotive knowledge to further drive performance hybrid technology. What attracted Pirelli to the collaboration was the ability to be part of a true track-to-road technology project. Pirelli has already been trying their hand at improving performance and safety thanks to their collaboration with Formula 1 and motorsport and this partnership with Infiniti will demonstrate their renowned sporting DNA once again.

NEW ONE-OFF SHELBY MUSTANG WOWS ENTHUSIASTS Thanks to a new project to explore new business opportunities, the world now has a special one-off Shelby version of a 1997 Ford Mustang built by Shelby American, Inc. The lucky Central Texas owner recently received his bespoke ride after Shelby American reimagined the car as if they had built it brand new back in 1997, giving it nostalgic vibes. A handpicked team of craftsmen got to work on the special Mustang, which was totally redone from the inside out, literally taking the Mustang down to its bones. The supercharged 4.6-liter engine was handbuilt, while they rebuilt the transmission to handle it. They also upgraded the suspension and added a new braking system. hile most of us look forward to the warm days of summer, the heat isn’t so welcome when it’s making the interior of your car uncomfortable. In addition, the long days of summer are often accompanied by an irritating glare that can distract you while driving. To differentiate it from its peers on the SEMA floor, Topo slammed it down instead of jacking it up (as everybody else had done) thanks to a custom lowering kit by Atlas Springs. As the only lowered F-250 at SEMA, it got its share of admirers, with many online fans waiting months for the unveiling of Topo’s “big” SEMA project that he often teased on social media in the months leading up to the show.

opo of TS Designs needs no introduction. The “widebody king” extraordinaire is a fabricating genius, known for giving just about any ride a voluptuous exterior. He’s widened the likes of Mustangs, Camaros, Ferraris and Lamborghinis and now he’s turned his tuning eye to trucks. For the 2016 SEMA Show, he lent his creative touch to freshly designed Ford F-250, widening the rear by 5” and the front by 2.5” on each side for a very striking look.

“People actually think it’s a concept!” he exclaims. “I get stopped all the time by people who want to know when the truck is hitting dealerships because it looks like something that would come straight from the factory.” Like most of his builds, Topo kept this one nice and clean with the other mods, including custom-fabricated side steps that wrap around the side of the truck, tinted taillights, an ARE bed cover, Bedrug bedliner, CGS exhaust,

K&N filter, custom vinyl pinstripe wrap by DH Wraps, two-tone black and red Katzkin leather and custom F-250 light logos on the rear. To get the stance just right a set of Forgiatos wrapped in Pirelli rubber round off the build. But it’s the special Lightning Silver color from Aston Martin that Topo really loves given its ability to look like a “gold pearl or light sky blue” depending on what angle you look at it from.

With the exterior on point, Topo needed to have the right sound system to accompany his SEMA gem and went with a Kenwood system. “I used Kenwood in last year’s SEMA build and liked it so much that I knew I wanted to use them again this year,” he says. “They’re known for having good, quality products ever since I first started in this customizing business and continue to impress me with each new product line they drop.” Because he wanted clean, crisp sound that could echo in the Las Vegas Convention Center’s halls against all the competition and wanted to save on space, he used products from Kenwood’s eXcelon line, which is their most advanced series of products that deliver uncompromising sonic fidelity that audiophiles demand. The build itself is one of his best, he admits. “It’s definitely gotten a lot more attention than other trucks I’ve worked on.” Already at the pinnacle of his widebody fabrication skills, Topo admits his eyes are now slated on doing a widebody lifted truck – something that we might see at a SEMA show soon!

f you’re not quite sure what to make of this ’65 Mustang Fastback, you’re not alone. You can’t quite put your finger on what exactly it is about this build that gets you excited, but it definitely gets your blood moving. From the looks of things, a classic chassis is clearly identified…but it doesn’t look (or feel) much like a classic build or restoration. The one-off notes run from front to tail and in every crevice in between. Timeless you might even say, which isn’t far off from the truth. Enter Timeless Kustoms, a Southern California-based shop that specializes in fabricating high-performance builds of an extreme caliber, taking 1950s through ’70s vehicles, building them from the chassis up and making them turn-key. Pro-touring is just one of many areas of Timeless’ customization expertise. But before we go deeper into this particular build, we’ll explain what protouring is.

Pro-touring is a style of classic muscle cars that have been retrofitted with modern day components—such as drivetrain, suspension, brakes and body panels—to give them new school functionality, which in most cases, can be just as good or even better than some of today’s performance vehicles. The term itself was coined by Mark Stielow, a program engineering manager for GM and former editor of Chevy High Performance, Jeff Smith (now at Car Craft) in the early ’90s. Pro-touring cars are meant to be driven, and those who build these cars drive them hard. And these enthusiasts don’t simply go for a street cruise; they’re often found road racing, blasting down the quarter mile or auto-crossed, taking a fine punishment as it’s meant to be. It just so happens that Timeless Kustoms ups the ante for the pro-touring category with aesthetics that are equally stunning as the performance they put into their customer’s projects. According to Bill Dunaway, general manager of Timeless Kustoms, the inspiration for this Fastback is simple: “We wanted to build the ultimate pro-touring Mustang using the best parts the OEM and aftermarket has to offer. This car won’t only hang with today’s best exotics and hyper cars, it can actually run 52

up front with them.” Dubbed “Vicious,” it took over 10,000 hours and approximately 10 months to complete the build, and when we caught wind of it at the AutoCon event in Los Angeles earlier this year, we knew we had to feature it. One big standout of the project is the engine package. Based off a GT350 5.2-liter, the fully-built, Ford Performance Aluminator long block makes 1,000hp thanks to a twincharged setup—meaning it runs off a Precision turbo and a Magnuson supercharger—offering not only horsepower, but a wide power range from low to high RPM, which is controlled by a paddle shifter transmission. “A peaky engine would’ve been a handful to drive,” Bill continues. “But an engine that produces a very flat torque curve gives the driver an ‘endless power for days’ type of feel.” If you fancy yourself a gearhead, just knowing that this sucker is twincharged is exactly the kind of thing that gives us the feels we want. 54

The amazing body work comes through “necessity of having to cover up the mechanical parts of the car, as well as finding venting sources to cool down multiple heat sources,” according to Bill. Timeless gave Vicious a mini-tub with 2” custom flares, added Dynacorn body panel shells and fitted the rear end with a diffuser that was inspired by Ferrari’s F-430. Slide over to the inside and it’s a red wonderland of more one-off work, which is kept extremely minimal to keep the driver focused on what’s most important: driving. From the custom floorpans to the Sparco seats, the dashboard with a customhoused Racepak digital cluster and rear seat delete, this is one passenger cabin we’d love to spend quality time in. As it stands, Vicious could be one of Timeless Kustoms’ best projects to date, and the proof lies in being the shop’s current flagship. “This car is the best of the best,” Bill says. “Perfect weight distribution, 1,000hp, fully independent suspension…it truly is a race car in a Mustang skin.” Best of the best—we couldn’t agree more.

hulio Tadeo and his crew at MC Customs have done it again, transforming an ordinary vehicle into a sight to behold for one of their most trusted and valued clients, MLB player Robinson Cano. When the second baseman for the Seattle Mariners called him up about adding their Midas touch to a Lexus LX570, Tadeo knew it had to have a menacing demeanor while exuding luxury like the Lexus brand is known for. “He wanted an elegant widebody kit, outof-control audio system and wheels to match the kit,” Tadeo describes about Cano’s initial build list. To fulfill his widebody request, Tadeo chose WALD’s Sports Line kit that features design language that was specially created to match Lexus’ new aggressive front end designs. Consisting of front and rear bumper add ons, four fender arches and a rear spoiler, the kit was the best fitting and most elegant option for Cano’s request. And to make it roar like the beast it is, a one-off exhaust system done by MC Customs lets Cano’s ride be heard everywhere it goes.

As an audio enthusiast, all of Cano’s rides need to produce massive sound and the Lexus was no different. “The sound system is really impressive,” Tadeo boasts. “I love the clarity of it. We used JL Marine equipment in the trunk, removed the third row seat and it has audio for days. I personally experienced a day in the Malecón In Dominican Republic pumping the tunes in this bad boy and it was an amazing experience!” As the first widebody Lexus the Miamibased shop has created, Tadeo sees it as a “beast in a league of its own,” which had Cano more than satisfied with the end result, blown away with the level of detail and sophistication that the shop provided for his luxury SUV.

s a Super Bowl Champion and one of the top defensive players in the NFL, Seattle Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril knows all too well how tough the grind of a football season can be. It doesn’t get any tougher than in the closing weeks of the regular season in December, when temperatures start plummeting and players can feel the cold seep into their bones the moment they step on the field. During these times, the mind tends to wander. Right before having to get themselves laser-focused on the playoffs, players have a small amount of time to think about what they’re going to do in the off-season. It was during the waning days of his Pro Bowl-worthy 2016 season that Cliff hatched a plan to live out one of his biggest car-enthusiast dreams. “There’s only a two-month window [for NFL players] where you don’t have to work out, so I try to fit in all my charity work and my family trips. This year, I wanted to do something else, too. Something a little different.” A car enthusiast since before he could even drive, Cliff often goes online to check out car show pics, videos and even recently attending the Charlotte stop of the DUB Show Tour. Years ago, he started watching videos of high-end car rallies, where celebrities and other wealthy exotic car owners would go on Interstate, and sometimes international treks, on some of the most legendary roads in the world. “I heard about these rallies like The Gumball [3000] and goldRush [Rally]. I’d watch their videos on YoutTube with all these Lambos, Ferraris, and McLarens. It looked like they were having a great time, so I thought, ‘Why not try it?’” But the question was: how does one stand out amongst the sea of six-figure European exotics that tend to run in these high-profile

IT LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE HAVING A GREAT TIME, SO I THOUGHT, ‘WHY NOT TRY IT?’ rallies? Cliff’s answer: bring a 2016 Dodge Hellcat sporting 800-plus horsepower and 24” Forgiatos that can go toe-to-toe (in a straight line) with any of them. He had already owned the Hellcat for a few months, and hit up his friends at Ultimate Audio in South Carolina with the idea of doing a custom widebody for his ride. They referred him to Z Designz in Los Angeles, who specialize in fully-fabricated bodywork that takes it to a level far beyond what is possible with off-the-shelf body kits. MAGAZINE 2017

Not a fan of the Liberty Walk-style riveted widebody setups one often sees on the car show scene these days, Cliff envisioned a widebody setup that was just as imposing, but far more slick and streamlined. “The dopest thing about it,” Cliff says, “is that it almost looks like it comes from the manufacturer like that. So many people come up and ask, ‘Man, what dealership did you get [the Hellcat] from?’ and I’m like, ‘You can’t get this at the dealership.’ The way the lines flow, it’s a head turner for sure.” Performance-wise, bolton mods like exhaust, headers, and pulleys, along with an engine tune, were all that were needed to enhance the stock Hellcats’ already prodigious power numbers to even more absurd levels.

Always one to be closely involved in all his car builds, Cliff took part in his Hellcat’s transformation from beginning to end. “My wife hated it,” he laughs “’cause I’ll be up at night Googling like crazy on the iPad, going through different pictures and writing things down. I was texting with [Z Designz owner] Zee [Siddiqi] almost every day for six months straight, talking about how everything would look.” Although he prides the bodywork as being almost OEM-like in fit and finish, he did insist on one thing that could never be mistaken for the factory units: the mammoth 24” Forgiato wheels powdercoated matte black with red accents. Measuring an unreal 15.5” wide and sporting enormous 9” lips, the only tires that can fit them are 355-series Pirellis that are sometimes out of stock for months at a time. “The crazy part is, even with wheels this wide, I can still break the tires loose going like 60,” Cliff says. With his 6.2-liter Hemi-powered beast complete, it was off to Beverly Hills, ground zero for the 9th annual goldRush Rally. The nine-day event is less a race and more a moving multi-million-dollar car show that spans six states and almost 4,000 miles. In between the drives are track events, five-star hotel stays, and private parties. “It was cool from the jump. Just meeting up in L.A. with all these car lovers. It must’ve been over $20 million in cars there. There were like three 84

Buggatis there. One of them was a black and white one worth like $3.5 million. There were tons of Lambos, Ferraris, and McLarens. Everyone loved the Hellcat, though. I was the only domestic there, other than one Mustang.” Starting in Southern Cali, going up to Washington and ending in Vegas, Cliff decided to do half the rally, since it would take him right to Seattle, where he owns a home. “One of the coolest things we did was going up from L.A. to San Fran. We took the scenic route up by the coast. The scenery was

amazing. Then they shut down the Golden Gate Bridge for us and gave us a police escort. It was about a hundred cars from the rally on the bridge.” When asked if he’d be down to do another rally, Cliff said, “For sure. I can’t wait to do it again. It was probably one of the coolest things I’ve done. It’s like when you’re a kid, and you’re playing a racing video game. That’s the only other time you can see cars like this all in one setting.”

Designz is no conventional speed shop. One noteworthy vehicle of theirs is a 2015 Toyota Sienna minivan that they transformed into “The Toyota UUV” (Ultimate Utility Vehicle). Built for Toyota’s SEMA booth in 2015, The UUV is a matte-black suicide-doored, off-road beast that looks like it’s kept in the Batcave when not on car show duty. Then there’s one of their current projects: A 2016 black widebody Dodge Charger Hellcat made for Seattle Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril. The 800+ horsepower monster was built with the goal of battling head-to-head against the legion of Lambos, Ferraris and McLarens at the 2017 goldRush Rally, while also being a comfortable daily driver for the 6’3”, 260 lb. NFL standout. Oh, and then there’s the fact Z Designz also customizes milliondollar helicopters at their fabrication facility, located adjacent to Brackett Field Airport in La Verne, CA. DUB caught up with Z Designz’s mastermind, Zee Siddiqi, as he was putting the finishing touches on the Hellcat on the eve of the goldRush Rally.

How did you first get into customizing cars? My eldest brother was involved in the big import racing scene back in the ’90s. He had a car show called “Drag Wars.” I got to see car culture there and then I started falling in love with modifying, designing, and building. From there, after I finished college, I got heavy into the marketing side of cars. I had the pleasure of working for a lot of big shops on the east and west coast like Galpin Autosports, Ultimate Auto, and West Coast Customs.

When did you decide that you wanted to branch out and own your own shop? After getting experience for 10 to 12 years, I reached a crossroads and decided to start my own business. It was a scary thought and it still is. When I’d listen to motivational speakers say “Sky’s the limit,” I thought, “Well, that’s always worked for me in my car builds, so why wouldn’t it work in business?”

What vision do you bring to the table when it comes to customizing cars? The great people I worked for at those big shops always pushed me to learn the entire process of building a vehicle. One of the things I pride myself on is that from the paint to upholstery to fabrication to welding to metal shaping, I’m very well-rounded. There isn’t one aspect of a build of a vehicle that I couldn’t do myself. How does your company, Z Designz, fit your unique perspective on customization? With Z Designz, one thing I never want to lose sight of is that all processes being done under one roof. We don’t have to source anything out to anyone. That’s the only way you can say you’re the creator of something. And beyond that, the difference in what we offer is service. It’s the experience. The process of involving the customer from the ground up. Another very unique thing you guys do is customize helicopters. How did you branch out from cars into aircraft? It was kind of a fluke thing. I found this large facility for my business, but it’s actually on airport property. As more aviation companies started moving to this area, I couldn’t stay here unless I did some aviation work. I noticed that the fit and finish in aviation (customization) was nowhere near ours with cars. We got aviation-certified in structural refinishing, upholstery, and electronics and I did a couple of small projects. Other companies saw the fit and finish on our work and it just snowballed from there. 94

What are some of your favorite projects at the moment? We got Cliff’s Hellcat, for one. Then there’s an 800-lb. Nemesis single-passenger race car we’re building. The client wants to put a 400 horsepower Audi turbo motor with 6-speed transmission in it. There’s nothing we can’t do. Sky’s the limit on automotive. We’re also building a Bell Ranger helicopter for SEMA. We’re building a carbon fiber interior, matte Mercedes black and gray paint with red accents outside, suede leather inside. It’s going to kind of merge the aviation and automotive world together. Since you say that there’s nothing your shop can’t do when building cars, what’s the least amount of car you need as a starting point? A customer can come with nothing but a piece of paper with an idea. In fact, it’s quite the contrary of what people think. It’s actually easier to have a blank canvas than it is to reverse engineer out designs to fit an existing platform. When it’s from scratch, we can set the suspension wherever we want. We can mount the motor wherever we want. We can place the transmission wherever we want.

Looking back at the nearly two decades you’ve been a car enthusiast, what has changed the most as far as what interests you? I used to be really driven towards aesthetics. Now as I’m getting a little older, I’m starting to realize I want my designs to have a lot of real world function. To have a purpose. Vents need to create downforce, wings need to have a reason to be shaped and angled a certain way. That’s now what I’m pushing toward.

What mark do you want your company to leave in both the car and aviation industries? Aviation customization is going to blow up. The industry doesn’t have anybody that has the fit and finish of the custom car world. But automotive is always going to be my passion. We’re always going to be building concept vehicles and we’re always going to be building SEMA cars. I’ll have to see what the future holds.

he zombie apocalypse continues to fascinate the masses, due in part to the ever popular zombie shows like “The Walking Dead” and “Fear The Walking Dead.” And although naysayers don’t think it’ll ever happen, you can never be too prepared, which is what Dave from Doetsch Off-Road thought. The experienced Jeep builder found inspiration in the zombie apocalypse, setting out to build a daily driver that could handle the streets and the trails (and leave the undead in the dust if need be). Nicknamed “Project Infected” to reflect the zombie theme, the post-apocalyptic rig needed to fit right at home escaping and eliminating zombies or hauling supplies to the next base camp. Tired of seeing these sorts of builds sporting dark, drab colors, Dave wanted something that was highly visible to help survivors navigate to it while defending the homefront and chose it’s bright green exterior. Since his shop specializes in customizing the No. 1 off-road vehicle on the market, finding the best mods and accessories to fit with his theme was a cinch! “We wanted to feature new products from companies that share our passion for the Jeep and that are still developing new innovative parts and accessories for it,” he describes. Although they primarily want to use new products that will debut at SEMA, Dave and his crew are more than comfortable switching things up to display their creative building skills.

“For example, we ran Rugged Ridge’s Spartan Grill which has been in the marketplace for a couple years now,” he explains. “However, the grille has a modular center insert and Rugged Ridge recently debuted an insert that allows you to mount a pair of round LED lights. Since our front bumper did not have fog light provisions, we instead opted to mount a pair of JW Speaker LED fog lights in the grille. The final install showed off the brand new grille insert while suggesting a creative way to retain fog lights.” Because the Jeep was going to be presented inside the Rhino Linings’ 2016 SEMA Show booth, Dave featured it with a full treatment of their spray-in-bedliner treatment, which included a Rhino Linings coating on the complete interior tub, the front and rear JCR Offroad bumpers, inside the rear fender wells, on the JCR Offroad rock rails and rocker panels and on the front and rear steel JCR Offroad fenders. “It’s definitely a bomb-proof way to protect nearly every corner of the Jeep!” he exclaims. All of the lighting used on Project Infected was ultra-efficient off-road proof LEDs, with JW Speaker-branded products featured like their LED headlamps, LED taillights, LED fog lights, plus LED auxiliary lights mounted on the lower windshield A-pillar and over/across the windshield on a Rugged Ridge light bar bracket. A full custom Katzkin leather interior mimicked “zombie skin” center inserts surrounded by black leather and Hyper Green double stitching.

“The response at SEMA, as well as afterwards, from everyone who laid eyes on Project Infected, was that they loved it,” Dave mentions. “The super bright Hyper green color was definitely attention getting and the massive 38x15.50R20 Nitto Trail Grapplers wrapped around GRID Off-Road wheels took over the roads. We’re always trying to “one-up” our last build and it is definitely getting harder as time goes on. But we think we hit Infected out of the park in regards to the use of strategic new products and overall theme.”

Even though the shop has worked on countless builds, this one wasn’t without its challenges. Since all the bumper, fenders, rock rails and much of the exterior were coated in Rhino Lining, the crew experienced a tricky install since there were very narrow tolerances between each of the parts that were supposed to seamlessly fit together or be installed close to one another. “For example, the rock sliders slip under the corners of the fenders, but since Rhino Lining is thicker than paint or powdercoat, we had to shave some of it off so that the pieces would fit together like a puzzle. While this wasn’t a major setback, we did have to take it into consideration as we installed all of the various components.” But after they mastered how to overcome this small road block, the rest of the build was fairly simple, taking only two months to complete. To make sure it lived up to all the hype of being a post-apocalyptic vehicle, Dave made sure he tested the beast out. So after its SEMA debut, it’s been on a “show tour” ranging from Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, UT to the Offroad Expo in Scottsdale, AZ, while continuing to visit different events across the U.S. and taking part in off-road adventures.

The Cook Convention Center was bursting at the seams with some of the hottest car culture the South has seen and guests were also treated to an insane concert lineup! We haven’t been to Memphis since 2014 and we must say… The city really stepped up their car game! The Monster Energy Lounge delighted all with samples from the latest Monster flavors, while the Monster Energy calendar models greeted and took pictures with admiring fans. The LFTD & LVLD Truck & Jeep Showcase had some serious stunners when it came to custom off-road vehicles in the form of trucks and Jeeps. t’s been 5 years since we touched down in Charlotte, North Carolina, but we finally brought the DUB Show Tour back on Saturday, May 6th at the Park Expo Center! Our return was bigger than ever and surpassed our expectations in so many ways! The crowd, exhibitors and just about everybody were excited that we were back and it as a fun and exciting show. The Monster Energy Lounge was the place to be, with free samples of the hottest Monster Flavors. The Monster Energy calendar models were in the house signing autographs and taking pics with fans. The LFTD & LVLD Truck & Jeep Showcase featured the hottest custom off-road vehicles around, while the all-star concert was the highlight of the night.
