DUB PUBLISHING, INC. LOS ANGELES : WORLDWIDE Myles Kovacs | Publisher | myles@dubmagazine.com Haythem Haddad | Editor/Creative Director | haythem@dubmagazine.com John Ramos | Promotions Director | john@dubmagazine.com Rich Calbay | Managing Editor | rich@dubmagazine.com Cynthia Tran-Kovacs | Accounts Manager | cynthia@dubmagazine.com Pierce Flynn | VP of Business Development | pierce@dubmagazine.com

By the time you read this, the New Year celebrations will have come and gone...it’s a new year and the beginning of a new decade. We welcome it all with a fresh outlook and a big dose of optimism. We’re all lucky to still be able to do what we do and we are fortunate enough to have some amazingly cool projects on tap for this new year.

DESIGN DEPARTMENT Steve Cuevas | Graphic Designer | steve@dubmagazine.com Jonathan Rodrigues | Art Director | jonrod@dubmagazine.com Adrian Guillemet | Video Editor | adrian@dubmagazine.com

The past years saw less and less of those making the annual automotive pilgrimage to the SEMA Show. But 2010’s show saw a big improvement, and if this year’s SEMA Show is any indication of what’s ahead of us, then we can all breathe a sigh of relief. It was awesome to see companies like Monster Energy commit itself to the automotive scene and have a large presence at SEMA with their big rigs lining up the Silver Lot and having drift demos by Ken Block and Vaughn Gitten, Jr. Our very own DUB LIVE! display and DUB Show at SEMA embodied car culture to its fullest, like “a show within a show,” with a huge display of custom exotic cars, trucks, and bikes. It was the last show on the 2010 DUB Show Tour schedule, and we could not have asked for a better end to a great year. The annual DUB Expo party held at RAIN Nightclub had guests and VIPs enjoying Grammy-winning artist T-Pain’s killer performance, and the annual DUB Awards, where we honored those who continue to make our culture what it is today. Speaking of Grammy artists...we’re featuring Grammy-nominee KEM who has garnered tremendous success via perseverance, passion and harnessing one’s talents despite having a troubled past. Hailing from Motor City, the self-proclaimed car enthusiast was pretty pumped to take Lincoln’s 2011 MKX for a spin.

We also caught up with Paul Wall and talked about how he’s adjusting to his new home in L.A., as well as his new physique. Looking healthy and fit, he talked about his love of old rides, his 1961 Impala and his latest musical endeavours.

Then there’s the beautiful Mercedes Terrell, who got into her successful modeling career by chance. She has graced numerous magazine covers and is currently holding it down as Miss Supercross 2011, as well as reppin’ for Bellator Fighting Championships. She talks to us about her hectic schedule, her love of Mustangs and, of course, what she likes in her men!

CONTRIBUTING WRITERS Sean Tucker / Justin Jerdon Kristopher Ku / Deanne DeLuna

And if you love Mustangs, you’re gonna wanna scope out Spade Kreations’ latest metal masterpieces. Check out their take on the current muscle car icons: the Mustang, Camaro and Challenger. If that doesn’t get your heart pumping, reading about the action-filled drama, The Mechanic, starring Jason Statham, just might do the trick. TWO THUMBS UP

HOT FOR HOLLY Holly was definitely my fave out of Hugh’s “Girls Next Door,” and was I trippin’ when I saw her cover for Issue 69! My God, she’s still freaking hot! I’ve seen her PEEPSHOW and it’s a must see in Vegas! As MY ultimate sex symbol, it’s nice to see that she’s still really down to Earth… my perfect girl! Thanks for that awesome eye candy! Vince A.

After reading the Faster article, I knew I had to check out the movie! Man, all I’m gonna say is the car chase scene between the Chevelle and Ferrari is sick! Both cars are equally amazing and I had a hard time choosing one. The Rock’s character, Driver, was pretty badass, too! Overall, it was an entertaining movie that I’d recommend to anybody who digs action flicks.

Seriously, Vince, the pics don’t do Holly any justice! She’s 100 times hotter in person. We couldn’t take our eyes off her at the shoot and had to remember our manners. She was so nice that for a moment, we h iin V forgot she was famous! As for h her show Vegas, your right about it being a must see…besides Holly, there is definitely lots of other eye candy to scope out and we definitely like that!

SENSORY OVERLOAD

Diego P. Dwayne Johnson is just an overall badass in our books, Diego. He has that tough guy persona that really makes his depiction as Driver realistic, which is one of the reasons why Faster is such a great movie. Of course, the cars are another great reason, too!

LET’S GET THIS PARTY STARTED DJ! Steve Aoki is seriously living the life! What I wouldn’t do to be in his shoes…an international superstar DJ, record label owner, producer and all party man! I dabble behind the decks a bit myself, but am nowhere near being as innovative and creative as Aoki. His piece has now inspired me to pick up my game! Oh, thanks for featuring some cool new DJ gear in Taste! Chris aka DJ Sleepwalker

The Massive Destruction cover car is beyond crazy. There’s just so much to look at that you don’t even know where to start checking it out! Honestly, it’s a bit too much for me personally, but you have to give the guy props for doing something so insane to his Navi. No wonder it holds the DUB Show Tour award record. I’m just wondering what he’s gonna come out with for the next show…that should be really interesting. Craig O. We were the same way, Craig, when we first saw the outrageously done up Navi. It’ll probably take you about 20 minutes of just staring at Massive Destruction to really see everything that’s done to it. We’re on the edge of our seats, too, in terms of what he’s gonna bring g out to the 2011 DUB Show Tour come March. But we’ll be sure to keep you posted! posted!

Steve Aoki knows how to kill it on the ones and twos, DJ Sleepwalker! He was so passionate about the music in the interview, you can just tell that he really loves what he does, which is why his music is amazing! He makes us want to learn to DJ, too!

Electric Charging on the Rise ECOTALITY’S BLINK EV CHARGING STATION AT BEST BUY

MERCEDES-BENZ GOING GREEN At this year’s Paris Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz talked about its greener vehicle endeavors for about 30 minutes, as CEO Dieter Zetsche and Smart head Annette Winkler stressed the consumer and environmental friendliness of the brand’s offerings. Zetsche mentioned that he wants to be “efficiency world champions,” which

DELPHI AND WITRICITY’S WIRELESS CHARGING SYSTEM Delphi and WiTricity have teamed up to develop and market a wireless charging system for electric vehicles (EVs). Wireless charging uses an electromagnetic field to transfer energy between two objects. This action takes place without the need for a plug, and in the case of the DelphiWiTricity design, will be activated the moment a vehicle is aligned with the charging pad. The system can charge battery-powered vehicles at a rate comparable to most home-based chargers, so a full charge can take anywhere from two to eight hours, depending on the vehicle’s battery size. EV owners would only be tasked with parking their vehicles in alignment with the pavement-mounted pad and could then go about their day. Delphi envisions placing these charging systems in homes and embedded in company parking lots. There’s one small problem though. This won’t exactly work until automakers, or some aftermarket company, create batterypowered vehicles with a power capture resonator.

24 DUB MAG JAN / FEB 2011

will require initiatives that were “previously unthinkable,” such as the hybrid S-Class and the coming four-cylinder versions. No exact timeline was announced, but Mercedes-Benz is determined to compete with their German counterparts BMW and Audi, who have already announced such green efforts.

ECOtality is installing its Blink EV Level 2 charging stations at 12 Best Buy stores located within The EV Project’s pilot markets of Tucson, AZ, Phoenix, AZ, Los Angeles, CA, San Diego, CA and Seattle, WA., by March 2011. More stations may hit Best Buy locations later on if all goes well with the initial 12. ECOtality hopes to develop an ideal model for creating an expansive EV infrastructure throughout the nation and these pilot projects should provide the company with the necessary details to do so.

FORD’S SEXY NEW CHARGING CORD

Ford’s 2011 Focus Electric will come with its new 25foot long “convenience cord” that’s designed to be kept within a designated spot in the trunk for safekeeping. For short trips, it’ll provide a charge of 120V (with a 12-hour charge time) and will also support an optional 240V home charger for longer trips.

After you guys became friends, was Rebel8 an immediate project? Joshy D.: Actually it evolved over the years. I was already doing another clothing company that wasn’t going anywhere, but I asked Mike anyway if he’d draw something up to put on some shirts. That’s how it all started. It wasn’t all planned out and corporate and sh*t. We printed our first shirts in 2003 and didn’t go to our first trade show until 2005. It’s always been a grassroots type of thing. So Mike, how did you become interested in art? Mike Giant: My parents have always encouraged my interest in art making. I always had plenty of magic markers and paper at my disposal. I initially got interested in graffiti when I saw breakdancing movies in the early ’80s. I saw the book “Subway Art” when I was in high school, around 1988. I started writing graffiti illegally on the streets of Albuquerque the following year, just before I started going to the University of New Mexico to study architecture. Growing up in Albuquerque, I saw lots of fineline black and grey tattoos on the Latin and Mexican guys I would see around town. Many of the fathers and older brothers of the kids that would pick on me had tattoos, and I could see that they weren’t to be f*cked with. So I grew up seeing tattoos as signs of acquired respect and power within an outlaw culture. I also had friends in the punk rock scene that got tattooed a lot when I was a teenage skate rat. I was 19 when I finally got my first tattoo, a graffiti style armband of the word “GIANT” designed by my old friend Joker IHU. My second tattoo, and first upon arrival in SF in 1993, was another band designed by Joker—more importantly, that tattoo was made by my friend Nalla, who was working at Ed Hardy’s Tattoo City at the time. That shop and the guys working there back then really shaped my outlook on tattoo culture. I was really lucky to be around that. Why the name Rebel8? Mike Giant: Honestly, I told Joshy the name wouldn’t matter. I felt like the content was the important part, not the name. He had been playing around with a bunch of different names and Rebel8 stuck. I thought it sounded fine. As time has passed, I’ve come to see the 8 as representative of the Buddha’s Noble Eightfold Path, something I try to embody in my own life. And it’s a path that I see as somewhat rebellious in this modern world of ours, so I feel like our brand name describes my intentions pretty well.

ith deep roots in skateboard, graffiti and tattoo cultures combined with diehard fans that rep tats of the clothing line’s infamous logo, Rebel8 expanded its fashion roots and created it’s own culture. Starting out as a simple T-shirt company back in 2003 in San Francisco, co-founder Joshy D. and Mike Giant have taken Rebel8 to an internationally renowned status that keeps on growing with every piece they come up with each season. On the verge of opening their first flagship store in the Bay Area, Joshy D. and Mike Giant took some

time out of their hectic schedules to give us some insight into the world of Rebel8. How did you guys link up? Joshy D.: We met years ago in the graffiti scene in San Francisco and were running in the same circles. I was looking to get tattooed for the first time, and through the graffiti grapevine, heard Giant was the guy to go to. So, I emailed him and we went back and forth for what felt like months until we finally linked up for my tattoo. We became instant friends.

How has the company grown since 2003? Mike Giant: Well, when we started it was just Joshy and I. Now I think there’s four full-time employees working with Joshy at the warehouse. For the first year or so, Joshy had to ship everything from his tiny basement studio apartment. It literally filled his entire apartment and the alleyway outside his door. It was nuts. Then we got a warehouse that seemed huge at the time, and a few years later we had to move into the much larger warehouse we have now. It’s pretty amazing how far we’ve come especially considering the rough financial times we’ve been going through. Joshy D.: Everything started with me, $500 and a friend who knew how to draw. Over time, people JAN / FEB 2011

were responding well and I just stuck with it and kept pushing. In a lot of ways, things are still the same, but on a bigger scale. Mike and I still go out, smoke and shoot the sh*t, but it just so happens that we do it across the globe. It’s still two friends that make this company. When coming up with Rebel8 designs, where do you look toward for inspiration? Mike Giant: Just life in general, really. Like, I just worked at a tattoo convention, so I’m super inspired by tattoo art right now. I’m also really inspired by ’80’s skateboard graphics because I’ve been skating again. I try not to look for inspiration. It’s more like I try to relax into my natural creative

flow and see what it has to show me. Are there particular elements that you always seem to include in your designs? Mike Giant: I sure stick our “8” logo on damn near everything I do now. I’m also really into archetypal imagery from Cholo and skate cultures. It’s also common for me to mention the names of friends and lovers in my work. I think the references to Catholic and Buddhist iconography is pretty obvious in my work, as well. How do you keep reinventing Rebel8’s style, while still keeping it true to its roots? Mike Giant: I think our style is pretty set actually.

Joshy and I aren’t trying to make things that we wouldn’t wear, and I think that sets the limits where we’re willing to go with the line. I think we’re constantly trying to develop Rebel8 from its roots, rather than trying to reinvent ourselves. I feel like brands die when they lose their roots or their initial motivations. I don’t see us going out like that. Would you consider it a streetwear company? Joshy D.: Good question [laughs]. Every couple of years it’s a new name for everybody. Lately everybody is a “lifestyle” brand, but it’s now turning back to “streetwear.” Labels are hard in general. Pretty much, my biggest focus for us is

REBEL8 WWW.REBEL8.COM MIKE GIANT WWW.MIKEGIANT.COM

to be 100-percent strong as a clothing company, and I just call it Rebel8. What’s in store for Rebel8’s future? Mike Giant: More of the same sweetness, I hope. We’re going to be producing more skateboard decks, which has me very excited. I would love to see us connect more with the skate community this year. Our cut and sew line is really jumping off now, too. I love my new pea coat! I’m really excited to see that part of our line expand more and more over the years. And our women’s line is slowly developing, as well. I would love to see more women in Rebel8. We just want to do it right. We want to open a Rebel8 store in SF soon,

and I think we’ll be able to do a lot more special projects for the ladies when we have a retail outlet. The store is gonna rock! Joshy D.: The overall picture for Rebel8 is to take what we’ve been doing and showcase it around the world. This flagship store will really show our fans what Rebel8 is truly about. It’ll allow them to really be emerged in the brand and really get that experience of the culture we’ve been creating. In general, we hope the future is bright as f*ck! The biggest thing is to keep doing what we’re doing and just kill it. I don’t want to lose any of our loyal supporters who’ve been down from the jump on our path to the top.

he’s beautiful and can spin like no one’s business. She’s already dominated the L.A. club scene, and has captured the attention of audiences worldwide. From Spain to Thailand, Malaysia and Mexico, the beautiful and talented HeavyGrinder will make your ass dance once her fingertips touch decks. Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, DJ HeavyGrinder first tried her hand at modeling, but soon realized music was her passion when she made her way to the City of Angels in 1998. Once she fell in love with the sounds of underground dance music, there was no turning back, which is where the story of DJ HeavyGrinder begins… How did you get interested in DJ’ing? HeavyGrinder: I started DJ’ing when I was 17. I was at a friend’s house party in Los Angeles, who is a DJ. I touched the turntables and instantly fell in love with them. It’s been quite a romance since then [laughs]. My first gig was at the Sunset Room in L.A. and I’ve been playing clubs ever since 2003. What type of DJ would you consider yourself? HeavyGrinder: I’m an electro DJ. During live shows, I like to mix things up and surprise people when playing. I play some dubstep, breaks, electro-house, indie, pop, etc. Right now a few of my favorite tracks include: Gio’s “Gladiator,” Pola-Riot’s “What What (Valerna Remix),” Kill Everybody’s “Skrillex,” Raggamuffin’s “Kelevra,” and Innerpartysystem’s “And Together (Midnight conspiracy Remix).” Who’s really killing it right now with hot tracks? HeavyGrinder: I’ve been feeling a lot of production by Kelevra, Crissy Criss, Nero, Valerna, Chuckie and Skrillex lately. JAN / FEB 2011

"An immediate goal for me is to continue to expand my audience both at home and internationally..."

We’re sure you get this a lot, but why the name HeavyGrinder? HeavyGrinder: My name was influenced by the band Cannibal Corpse—a death metal band. I was a huge fan and the former vocalist was named “Corpse Grinder.” The music was very heavy, so I took the word “heavy” and “grinder” and combined them to make my DJ name. What’s it like being a female in a male dominated industry? HeavyGrinder: It was difficult in the beginning. There weren’t as many female DJs as there are today. I felt, like, I had to really work hard just to prove myself. I had to push myself into this industry to make my name. Do you feel the pressure to always have to dress girly and be sexy to get gigs? HeavyGrinder: No. I actually dress down most of the time. Long sleeve jackets or shirts and pants are my usual look. Every once in a while I might wear a skirt, but not very often. What was the journey like for you establishing a name for yourself in the scene? HeavyGrinder: The journey has had its ups and downs so far. Starting out, I had to deal with a lot of people criticizing, bashing, etc. But it only made me stronger. I am very glad that I stuck to what I love doing and kept moving forward.

46 DUB MAG JAN / FEB 2011

What notable venues/festivals/parties have you played at? HeavyGrinder: I’ve had great shows on every continent; Kokugikan in Japan and El Devino in Ibiza were my dream gigs. My show at Kokugikan was insane! Playing in front of thousands of people dancing and enjoying the music. I get a natural high from watching my audience get off to the music every time I’m on stage. Where would you love to DJ but haven’t gotten a chance to yet? HeavyGrinder: Italy and Russia are at the top of my list. I would love to spend time in both countries. What type of equipment are must haves for you to play on? HeavyGrinder: Pioneer CDJ-2000s and DJM-800 mixer is a MUST! What are your DJ goals? HeavyGrinder: An immediate goal for me is to

continue to expand my audience both at home and internationally; to further spread my music worldwide and tour countries I’ve yet to visit. You also produce music. How did this come about for you? HeavyGrinder: I have been producing successful music releases for a long time now. I’m going to continue DJing and I hope to produce and play live for the rest of my life. I’ve been working on some great new music and collaborating with other talented people. I am releasing a collaboration venture with hip-hop artist Wyldman from Australia called, “Gold Coast’n.” Also, a new track with Valerna is sounding great. What’s the future looking like for your DJ career? HeavyGrinder: This coming year, I’m increasing my music releases; touring in new markets worldwide; exploring other areas of the industry; producing upcoming artists; forming new business alliances...2011 is going to be a hot year!

“M

an, I stopped getting on a scale after I hit 320 and was embarrassed of my weight,” Paul Wall explains. “This one time on stage, I lost my breath and almost blacked out because I was so big and it was then I realized I needed to do something about it.” Losing more than 120 pounds thanks to a gastric sleeve procedure, “The People’s Champ” is embracing his dramatic transformation. But his appearance isn’t the only difference in Paul Wall’s life since we last caught up with the Houston-born rapper. When we last checked in on him, he was fresh off his sophomore release, Get Money, Stay True. Now, he’s hot off his fourth album, Heart Of A Champion, and has now become a Southern Californian and transitioned back to his underground hip-hop roots. “I’m a grown man now,” he smiles. “Life is a lot different for me and it’s now reflected in my music and lifestyle.” With his latest album, Wall enlisted long time friend and Expensive Taste bandmate Travis Barker to help produce half the album. “Travis brought an entirely new sound,” he explains. “Since he doesn’t come from a hip-hop background, he brought in some very versatile music that fit with my rap style. This album had no set agenda, no plans, basically no rules. We came into the studio everyday and let the magic just happen on its own.” And magic it is. Featuring some unique collaborations, such as Kid Sister, Bun B and Jim Jones, Yelawolf, Jay Electronica and more, Heart Of A Champion is pretty far off, musically, from his debut album The People’s Champ. Still passionate about his hip-hop underground roots, Wall and Travis brought in some electro, rock and pop elements to the album, which he also hopes will crossover to his follow-up venture.

“Older cars are more my thing, especially finding them as original as possible.” “Man, I wanted to work with A-Trak and Diplo on this album, but they are on top of the world right now, so maybe on the next album,” he confesses. “I’m a big fan of underground rap and really want to do songs with people I’m fans of and friends with.” Another big change in Wall’s life is his now mended friendship with longestranged childhood friend and former groupmate Chamillionaire. “The beef has been squashed,” he asserts. In March of 2010, both announced they would join forces to headline their “In Love With My Money Tour.” He admits that while it may have been sparked by label disputes, the tension was really personal, which is why neither of them did the usual rapbeef thing and took shots at each other in diss tracks. “I have to give credit to Pimp C calling us both out on the song ‘Knocking Doors Down,’ and then talking to me and Cham separately to help us put our differences aside. That helped a lot to have somebody I respected and admired to sit down and tell me that I am trippin’ and need to snap out of it. It helped us put the differences aside and then we started talking again, making music and now we are on tour together.” While things aren’t exactly the same between the two rappers, Wall admits things will probably never be like before. “We’d both like to make an album together again, but we’ll see,” he says. “People are gonna want the old Paul Wall and Chamillionaire, but we both are grown men and have new sounds. Don’t think people want the new us together.” Despite all these new changes, one thing that hasn’t changed for Wall is his love for Cadillacs and classic rides. Still one to choose an old school over a new school, Wall’s clean ’61 Impala convertible is a bit of Houston in his new L.A. world (as well as his and her Cadillac Escalades that he and his wife use as daily drivers). “When I first started seeing the huge paychecks I never seen before, I went

50 DUB MAG JAN / FEB 2011

out and bought some Benzes, but they weren’t really me,” he explains. “Older cars are more my thing, especially finding them as original as possible. The best is to find them when they’ve had only one owner. New school cars are cool only for the moment since there is always a new model every year. You have to always be upgrading them like you do phones. With the classic cars, they are classic forever. You never have to worry about them going out of style.” As far as changing up his L.A. garage game, he’s looking to add a slick ’77 Caddy by this summer. “You gotta take your time with these classics. They can’t be rushed.” Looks like some things never change.

iss Supercross Mercedes Terrell stares nostalgically at the Monster Energy Ford Mustang she’s being shot with. “My first car was actually a Mustang GT 4.6, black-onblack,” the five-foot-six-inch, brunette beauty recalls. “So stoked to be in front of a Mustang for the cover shoot. I miss my old baby. It met its demise by an ex-boyfriend who totaled it. Man, it was a sweet ride! I might just have to buy me another one now!” Mercedes then goes on to inform us that her old Mustang was what actually began her fascination with cars at 16, which, of course, makes us all drool over the fact that she’s a gearhead. We’re even more in love with the girl after she starts talking about how much she loves having fun in the sand, while riding quads and sand rails. “My step-dad built sand rails as a hobby, so I grew up going to Glamis and riding in the sand and dirt,” she explains, going on about how her little sister rides dirt bikes. “I grew up in a very moto-driven family. My older sister was also into the import racing scene, which also got me into that for a while.” Can this girl be anymore perfect? Not only is the 26-year-old former import model, Monster Energy girl and now the face of Supercross, as well as a Bellator Fighting Championship ring girl,

but she can talk shop pretty damn well. “Let’s just say I can hold my own in an automotive conversation,” she laughs when we compliment her on her car knowledge. I’m not an expert or anything, but I know a few things. I like to think it’s because of starting out in the import scene as a model. You pick up things after doing it for a while.” In our opinion, she’s picked up a lot since her first modeling gig for a D1 drifting event back in

2004. But it’s her first Import Tuner cover that really launched her as a sex symbol. “This was never a dream of mine, but I’m glad I got into it,” she says about her vibrant modeling career. “It’s allowed me to be a part of two things I really love, Supercross and MMA. Seriously, these two sports are my favorite and to be a part of something you would go to already and still get paid is more than amazing! It’s seriously in my blood, which definitely helps me be all I can be as

Miss Supercross. It’s a pretty rad opportunity.” First winning the title in 2010, Mercedes has done such an amazing job as Miss Supercross that she’ll be holding the title for the 2011 season, too. Growing up in the OC (but now living in Las Vegas), Mercedes adds that Supercross was a family outing every time the circuit was in in So. Cal. “My family was super excited when I told them about the title!” she exclaims. “When they announced me as Miss Supercross at the opening race for 2010, it turned out that my little sister was also getting sworn in for the Air Force at the same race. It was really cool and such a coincidence for my family, who were, of course, all there. It was a memorable day for all of us!” Once you get this girl started on Supercross, she can pretty much talk about it nonstop! Her predictions for next year include rider Ryan Dungey being a serious contender. “I think everyone doubted him in 2010. He’s a great rider and don’t think he’ll get shown up when Bubba Stewart comes back this season. It’s actually gonna be a great showdown between Chad Reed, Ryan Villopoto, Stewart and Dungey. They are all serious contenders, but I’m rooting for Dungey. He always gives me great interviews after the races!” Standing next to Villopoto’s Kawasaki KX 450F bike, Mercedes added some praise for the rider. “He’s a great rider, but got injured at the end of the 2010 season,” she says. “He could have taken home the Championship, too. But that’s why Supercross is so exciting—you never know what’s gonna happen next!” Looking forward to what transpires for the new season, Mercedes already knows she’s in for a very busy year, as she juggles her responsibilities with both Bellator and Supercross. “I’m a traveling side show,” she jokes. “I fly more than a pilot I think. My schedule is pretty much: Wednesday fly out to wherever

“THIS WAS NEVER A DREAM OF MINE, BUT I’M GLAD I GOT INTO IT. IT’S ALLOWED ME TO BE A PART OF TWO THINGS I REALLY LOVE, SUPERCROSS AND MMA.” Bellator is, Thursday night is fight night, Friday I then fly to wherever Supercross is, with Saturday a long day at the races, then back home Sunday only to do it all again the following Wednesday. The time zones are a pain.” To help her keep track of time, Mercedes does have her own signature watch, thanks to a collaboration with Rockwell Time. “If I wasn’t a model, I’d probably be doing something in fashion, so this was an incredible opportunity that came about thanks to Supercross.” Adding more fashion-oriented things is a future goal she hopes to one day fit into her hectic lifestyle. But she’s not complaining. Mercedes is more than happy being a part of two things she loves and couldn’t ask for anything more. Well, maybe a new 5.0 Mustang GT to replace the one her ex crashed!

What do you currently drive now? A 2004 BMW 330 Ci. It’s lowered, has aftermarket LED lights, tinted windows, and wheels. I’m actually ready to switch it up and am looking at cars. Thinking about getting the new Audi A5 next. It looks sexy, sporty and sophisticated. What’s your dream car and do you ever think you’ll get it? First it’s a Porsche Carrera GT, then I want a four-door Jeep Wrangler to romp around and do fun stuff, and finally my Audi A5. I hope to have all three one day soon...you’ve gotta keep your dreams alive! What type of cars do you like your men to drive? I don’t really like when guys drive small cars at all, but then again, I don’t want them in a lifted truck, either. Ideally, I’d like them to drive sexy sports cars or SUVs, a 7-Series Bimmer or an Escalade... something along those lines. Overall though, the cars doesn’t make the man! I like to keep it lowkey; nothing brightly colored or too conspicuous. What traits do you look for in a guy? They have to have a sense of humor and make

me laugh. You gotta be lighthearted and looks, of course, play a part, but I have no specific look in mind. A great smile is always a plus. I like gentlemen, someone who opens the door for me and treats me like a lady. Someone who was raised right. I also like guys that can hold a conversation and honesty is big for me. Then who’s your favorite male celebrity? This changes all the time. Right now it’s Channing Tatum and Twilight’s Kellan Lutz. What are turnoffs for you? Bad breath…that kills it for me and poor table manners like when people chew with their mouth open. Also, I really can’t stand when guys start talking about their money or what they drive; it’s tacky. Body odor is a no-no and so are cheaters. Nobody likes a cheater. What’s your notion of a romantic date? Nothing really lavish or crazy. You don’t need to fly me to Jamaica or something. I think having dinner is always a good idea since it gives you something to do and a reason to sit in front of them and talk to them. So I’d say a low-key

dinner and a movie. I also love art and roller coasters, so a museum or amusement park would be a fun alternative. How does it feel to be considered a sex symbol? It’s really cool to be called that. It is surreal that people think I am one. It’s a compliment and something I never thought I’d be. Don’t see myself as one since I’m pretty goofy and awkward most of the time. What do you think is your best characteristic? I understand the butt thing because I’ve heard that a lot, but I think it’s my smile. That can tell a lot about a person. I would say my sense of humor, too. I’m not afraid to make a fool of myself and do a lot of impersonations from my favorite movies and comedians. So who would you date if you had the chance in either Bellator or Supercross? Can’t date either of the guys by contract. The guys are really sweet, but dating someone you work with is probably the worst idea in the world. It would be a big mess.

t’s always exciting to be nominated for a Grammy, which R&B singer KEM definitely is after he garnered two 2011 Grammy nominations for his song “Why Would You Stay” off of his latest release, Intimacy. An intimate confession of true remorse, the song has KEM competing against the likes of other genre greats like John Legend, Jaheim and Fantasia for the Best R&B Song category, and vying for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance award along with Usher, Musiq Soulchild and El DeBarge. For KEM’s third studio album Intimacy, he goes deep and explores the meaning of Intimacy—not only in terms of romantic situations, but family and self-intimacy as well. “It’s a very thoughtful and musical record. drug rehabs and shelters. “A lot of songs on my first album Kemistry were created and developed in the worst periods of my life and I don’t regret it,” he confesses. “My faith and my journey are reflected very well in that album. My music was actually instrumental in helping me navigate that rough patch of terrain in my life.” He vividly remembers having to be kicked off the piano one night while at a shelter and shares that rock bottom hit when he found himself having to sleep outside after breaking a shelter’s rules. “That’s what made me determined to change my life,” he says. Now clean and sober for more than 20 years, KEM mentions that everything he might have lost during his troubled past, he’s gained back 100 fold. Once he got back on his feet, he continued to write and record his music while waiting tables, singing at weddings and practically anywhere he could until he finally independently released his first album in 2002. Universal Motown quickly learned of him signed the singer/songwriter to a l multi-album deal. m Since then, he’s become a popular act in the S adult contemporary genre and has become a a leading man in the world of R&B music. l “Life is a great teacher,” he describes. “I’ve “ learned a lot since my last album…and yes, I still l call c them albums. My albums are like children to me. m I work endlessly nurturing each song with the

hope that when I send them out into the world they will make a difference.” While making a difference is always a good thing, being nominated for a Grammy ain’t bad either. “Being nominated and winning a Grammy is at the top of my achievements list,” he mentioned in the interview, which was done before the Grammy nominations came out. Looks like KEM might just be able to cross that one off of his list!

“LINCOLN HAS GONE A LONG WAY IN TERMS OF THEIR DESIGN. I LOVE ITS SILVER COLOR AND HOW THE BLACK TINTED WINDOWS REALLY MAKE IT STAND OUT.” 70 DUB MAG JAN / FEB 2011

KEM GETS INTIMATE WITH LINCOLN’S 2011 MKX KEM was given the opportunity to take Lincoln’s 2011 DUB Edition Lincoln MKX out for a quick spin. Here are his thoughts on the luxury crossover vehicle: ON CROSSOVERS: “I like crossovers better than a traditional SUV. They, obviously, give you the best of what an SUV offers, but in a sedan-like form. I like how you sit up higher and it’s easier to get the kids in and out of the car. They’re also great on mileage and are easier on the environment.” ON THE EXTERIOR: “Lincoln has really gone a long way in terms of their design. I like how the exterior makes use of curved lines instead of it being all straight-edged. It has a nice appeal. Plus, the silver color is really sleek, especially with the tinted windows. Of course, DUB has it pimped out on 24s and added a performance suspension system, too, which adds to the car’s style.” ON THE INTERIOR: “You have all the amenities you’d find in a European luxury automobile inside the MKX. It’s very comfortable. The ergonomics of where your elbow rests is crucial for me and the MKX has the center console perfectly positioned for this. ON HANDLING: “It has a really smooth ride. Acceleration and pickup is also quite good. You can easily get a bit carried away while driving the MKX, which is very important for when you feel like driving faster than usual.” ON THE SOUND SYSTEM: “My favorite feature in the Lincoln MKS is the stereo system. It’s intimate. Listening to my CD, of course. It’s like I’m sitting in my own living room, listening to me [laughs]. Gotta love it, it’s great!” “I like the whole SYNC situation. Being able to plug in my iPod and being able to make a phone call without having a handset in my hand is also great.” “It’s one thing to hear your music in a studio setting, but it’s entirely different in the car and that’s where people usually hear music the most… while they’re driving. All my cars have to have a really good sound system and the MKX’s has a nice sound presence. The bass isn’t out of hand, which can often be a problem. It’s a really good system and I’m very impressed.” OVERALL THOUGHTS ON THE LINCOLN MKX: “The general style of the car matches my style of music; my music is smooth and easy on the palette. The car is smooth and sleek. Somebody has definitely been paying attention to the details—exactly like how I do with my music…and I can appreciate that.”

or director Simon West (the man behind movies like Con Air and Black Hawk Down), one of his favorite parts about his job is being able to choose the type of cars that will go in his movies. For Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Simon really got to have his fun, selecting tons of cars for the action-packed adventure flick that starred Angelina Jolie. “Lara Croft was a James Bond-like character, so I was able to fill her garage with tons of goodies like a Lotus, some specially-made utility vehicles and was even the first to feature the Aston Martin Vanquish…even before James Bond got it,” he says. “As a director, you’re able to project a lot of yourself in the films and I like to do it with cars, given I’m a huge car fan.” Simon’s latest film, The Mechanic, a reboot of the 1972 Charles Bronson movie of the same name that stars Jason Statham as the main protagonist and Ben Foster as Jason’s protégé, allowed him to once again project a bit of himself via the chosen cars. Jason plays Arthur Bishop, a “mechanic,” an elite assassin who lives by a strict code and has a unique talent for eliminating designated targets. As the best in the business, he’s a solo-type of guy. But when his professional mentor Harry McKenna, played by Donald Sutherland, is killed, Bishop is anything but forgiving and immediately seeks to kill those responsible for the death of his close (and maybe) only friend. Ben Foster plays Harry’s son, Steve, who wants revenge for his father’s death and approaches Bishop for guidance and tutelage about his craft. Although resistant at first, Bishop takes him on as his apprentice. On a mission to kill, Bishop takes Steve deep into his brutal and violent world, but while on the hunt for the killer, deception and mystery takes its toll, providing complex emotions amidst an action-packed background. While most hit man-oriented movies include fast

and flashy cars, such as Lamborghinis or Ferraris, for Jason’s character, Simon wanted a much less extravagant vehicle. “Bishop is a hit man who has to be low-key, so nothing flashy would have worked,” Simon explains. “It also had to be a useful tool and something cool, so I ended up going with a Chevy Silverado Z71 Extended Cab. It was a realistic car for someone with Bishop’s job since it was big enough to carry all of his weapons, while still allowing him to ram his way out of situations when he was on missions. It was sort of like a tank that he modified himself.” But for Bishop’s passion car, West picked a 1966 Jaguar XJ6 that he restores throughout the film and eventually becomes an interesting plot point in the end. “[Steve] McKenna is very envious of it and wants to take it out for a drive, but Bishop is totally against it. Ultimately, the Jaguar is Bishop’s prized possession and Steve wants it. Both cars reflect the type of person I am; I like rugged 4x4s but at the same time enjoy classic sport cars. ” Not wanting to give too much away, Simon believes audiences will enjoy the latest iteration of The Mechanic for its realness and believable situations, something that’s been lost in many films of the same genre due to CGI and special effects. “I think the further you go from reality, the less emotionally involved people get,” he explains. “I didn’t want to over glamorize Bishop’s job and made sure every piece of action and plot was totally possible, even down to the fight scenes. Jason and I talked about it all and wanted everything to look like what an experienced hit man would be doing in real life. The scenes might be brutal and gritty, but they are real. eep in America’s heartland is Cincinnati, Ohio-based Spade Kreations, one of the largest and most notable shops in the Midwest. Here, blue-collar hard work and dedication are part of the culture. For owner Rick Spade, hard work is no stranger. Beginning 12 years ago, what started as a hobby in various garages turned into a career. After years of self-taught custom car building, Rick has learned the secret to success. From simple stereo installations that echo the shop’s early beginnings to full-on restorations and builds, Spade Kreations has done it and seen it all. Lately, Rick and his crew of skilled workers have been receiving a high demand in customization orders for the latest iteration of Pony Cars, which prompted him to add some Spade styling takes to a Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger, which were built as their 2010 SEMA show car projects. “These domestic manufacturers have made some impressive leaps and bounds in the past few years, especially in terms of building some appealing and desirable platforms,” Rick says. “The fact that they also opened themselves up to customizers like ourselves to build a host of aftermarket goodies has allowed us to transform these modernized beauties into our creations.”

But modern Pony Cars aren’t the only cars Spade Kreations has been working on. “We are seeing a trend where guys want all the amenities of the new cars, but wrapped in the shell of an old school. So we’ve been doing a lot of interior builds that resemble new cars, a lot of late model fuel injected engine and transmission swaps and a lot of technology upgrades.” As a shop that specializes in it all, Rick is working on expanding the current facility to make more room for his immediate plans. He has taken advantage of every opportunity to grow and succeed, which reiterates his passion for hard work and taking risks. “We’ve definitely seen a huge pick up in our wheel sales, which is why we wanted to build something that would show off more wheels,” Rick says. “We are also building a bigger showroom so we can have up to three of our

latest projects on display.” He has since built Spade Kreations into a top-tier shop that is backed by a decade of word-of-mouth advertising and quality work. “As a shop, we try to stay grounded and always stay focused on our local market no matter how much notoriety we get nationally,” he explains. “Something that has helped get the shop over the rough economic times these past two years. We set our sites high and never let our minds rest.” In fact, it also doesn’t hurt to have some help from mom. “If it wasn’t for mom doing the accounting, I would have never made it this far. She worries about the numbers, while I stay focused on our direction.” He also holds a great deal of pride in his down-to-earth crew. Their mission statement: “Anything and everything to do with vehicles is our forte,” says it all. More importantly, their number one goal is to identify and establish strong relationships with their customers, as well as show enthusiasts everywhere their multitude of customizing capabilities. Looking toward the future, Rick can’t wait to start customizing their recently purchased semi that hauls up to six cars. This has been a longstanding goal of his, and he plans to display it at shows nationwide, while having his father, Big Rick Spade, Sr., drive. “But the long-term goals are all about expansion! First, locally with a larger facility, and then it’ll be time to venture into different cities, partnering up with allies we’ve met along the way,” Rick explains. “The ultimate vision is for Spade Kreations to help change the custom car industry by building a recognizable brand…to create a network of custom shops and ultimately become more profitable and successful. I have learned the hard way, and I hope to one day make a business model that passionate car customizers can follow to become successful.” Rick’s next accomplishment is a private plane, with a Spade Made custom exterior and interior. With one eye on the prize and the other focused on customizing just about anything, we are all very eager to see what Rick and his crew can “pony” up next.

his year’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas was a vast improvement from previous years, which is an AMAZING sign that the industry is on the rise. From November 2-5, many from the automotive segment made their way to Sin City to check out the latest in products, trends and builds. Our DUB LIVE! outdoor display was Gigantic! The best way to describe it is “a show within a show,” given it was filled with numerous customs, exotics, luxuries, bikes, Lowriders and more. Besides our display, another fave was Monster Energy’s showcase that featured some cool ass drift demos by Ken Block and Vaughn Gitten, Jr. T-Pain also showed up to Monster’s area to spin a few tunes. The annual DUB Expo VIP party was held at RAIN Nightclub in the Palms Resort and Casino on November 3. Pioneer’s DJ Kris P was behind the 1s and 2s, while T-Pain jumped onstage to close out the night. The Jabbawockeez, Kaba Modern and Super Cr3w were busting their grooves and moves on the dance floor, while Onyx performed live.

2011 CADILLAC CTS-V COUPE AN ENGINEERING MIRACLE FORGED FROM A BLOCK OF SOLID AGGRESSION WORDS: SEAN TUCKER

rue story: We damaged an Aston Martin. Well, actually, we had something to do with the moment a Vantage folded up its hood by crashing into the back of a Nissan Versa. We weren’t in either car, but we definitely caused it. It turned out that the driver of the Vantage wasn’t watching where he was going. Instead, he was looking to his left, watching us pass him in the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe…and he momentarily lost track of what he was doing and hit the Versa. Just goes to show how good the CTS-V Coupe looks.

snarling C63 AMG Black Series. Lexus has the F unit, and its V8-powered IS-F. And, to answer them, Cadillac built V, with its specially-built division pouring everything into the new model—from magnetorheological damping (shock absorbers that can infinitely vary their stiffness using electromagnetic fields) to a modified

version of the V8 found in the Corvette ZR1. The result? An actual M3-beater. The four-door CTS-V has embarrassed the M3 in a handful of races – something unthinkable just a few years ago. Everyone in the automotive press assumed the story would end there. Sure, they’d probably put out a coupe version. BMW and Mercedes both chopped two doors off of theirs. But it would be a small change, like it is with the M3 or the C63 AMG. Nothing radical. Then this thing showed up. And blew all of our assumptions out of the water. EXTERIOR The Cadillac CTS-V Coupe is not a version of the CTS-V sedan with two doors removed. It’s a

Introduced in 2004, the four-door Cadillac CTS-V is one of the most important cars the American automotive industry has ever produced. It proved that America could hang with the most advanced German engineering, at a time when that seemed to be in doubt. The coupe is now taking it to new heights for American cars. Every serious luxury automaker builds a midsize sport sedan that can seat four in luxurious surroundings, and still hold its own against some sports cars on a winding road. Most of them stop at that. But the real title contenders have a separate team of engineers, a sort of tuner Special Forces. They then take the car to a secret laboratory buried in a mountainside somewhere and apply every trick in the tuner’s book to make it into a magnificent beast that will beat nearly anything it comes up against at a stoplight – a four-door race car, for all practical purposes. BMW has the M division, and its favorite son, the M3. Mercedes has the AMG shop, and the JAN / FEB 2011

completely new body design—and it’s the boldest thing to hit American roads in a very long time. Cars this brash don’t really get built. They show up as concepts, then get radically toned-down and brought to market with much disappointment. But this? This is like nothing you’ve ever seen before. It looks evil yet sleek. While most sporty cars look sculpted, this one looks like it was designed with a hammer and a chisel and whitehot forge, all hard angles and glossy planes, but it’s gorgeous. Cadillac sends it to us in a glossy black they call “Raven,” with a black interior, riding on 19-inch painted aluminum wheels, with genuine Brembo brakes peeking through. INTERIOR The ordinary CTS has one of the most welldesigned interiors of anything on the road. The CTS-V Coupe has the same, with added tactile adrenaline to remind you that you sit at the helm of a car that inspires fear and admiration. Its 14-way adjustable Recaro racing seats (a $3,400 option) are comfortable, but more importantly, they’re trimmed in Alcantara suede that holds you in place when you take a tight turn at a speed that would be inadvisable in any other car. The steering wheel is wrapped in the same suede. When the car is sitting still, this feels like a luxurious touch. At high speed, it’s almost a safety feature, making the wheel stick to your hands for precision cornering.

The dashboard’s coolest trick is still the touchscreen for the navigation that pops up when you need it. When you don’t, it slides back into its hiding place, leaving just the top inch exposed, showing the pre-sets for the standard satellite radio. Ours is trimmed in something Cadillac calls “Midnight Sepele Wood.” As a $600-option, it’s a subtle woodgrain that is a sleek grey in color, and works well with the black leather and suede. PERFORMANCE But the point of the CTS-V isn’t found in the

Alcantara seats or even the Aston Martinwrecking look of the thing…it’s in what happens when you flex your right foot. The 6.2-liter, supercharged V8 under the hood is an incredible engine, putting out 556 horsepower – more than the M3 Coupe, more than the C63 AMG Black Series – hell, it’s just four horsepower fewer than you get in the Ferrari 458 Italia. The engine is tuned masterfully. Some ultrapowerful mills are actually hard to drive at low speeds, but not this one. Zero-to-sixty comes in just 3.9 seconds (we got 4.4 in the M3 Coupe), but with this car, zero-to-sixty is nearly impossible,

because 90 comes on so fast, who can stop at sixty? More than once, we accelerated hard out of a toll booth, planning to slow down at highway speed, but overshot by almost 30 mph. It’s that powerful. At speed, you feel like you’re not driving the car so much as you are reigning it in, holding it back, settling it down to keep it from rocketing off to its 191 mph top speed. There is a helpful boost gauge in the instrument cluster to tell you when the unique intercooled, four-lobe Eaton supercharger has kicked in – but the V8 is so powerful, we actually found it pretty hard to trigger the screws. But this is no muscle car. It handles like a taut little sport coupe, with insanely tight steering that makes the car feel like an extension of your body. It’s rear-wheel-drive, and we only had dry conditions to test it in, but it felt as grippy as some AWD systems. We’d power on into corners looking for the slightest hint of slip from the 19-inch performance tires – but we never found it.

Gripes? Sure. They put an mpg gauge in this thing. They should take it out. We don’t want to know. Idling in bumper-to-bumper traffic, we didn’t need the reminder that we were getting 4 mpg – of the expensive premium stuff the supercharger demands. Then again, we didn’t exactly try driving smooth and slow like dad taught us. We were in the baddest car on the road, you see. VALUE Our tester came in at $69,890. It’s more than you’d pay for a M3 Coupe, C63 AMG and an IS-F. We don’t care at all. It’s a better car in every imaginable way. The four-door CTS-V was built to take it to the Germans and show that American automakers could design with the world’s best engineers. The CTS-V Coupe, though, just isn’t the same thing. It’s so much closer to a pure sports car than any of its rivals—that supercharger puts it in an entirely different league. Bottom line? An accident-causing, neck-breaking vehicle worthy of its American background.
