T
he last issue of the year is always a hard one to compile. Knowing that another year has gone by makes you realize how fast time moves forward. But this issue always puts the year’s past events in perspective for us as we’ve seen all the hottest and latest aftermarket trends for the year at various DUB Show Tour stops, events we cover, people we meet and more. This year, we’ve noticed how intense many are getting with their customizations, becoming game changers in their own right. Take for instance cover car “La Reina.” With so many intricate mods done to it, it’s practically as customized as a show winning Lowrider. In fact, even the Lowrider guys have been buzzing about it. Jake and Jay are helping change the way we look at hybrids with their new partnership with Valvoline, becoming their NextGen poster boys for those who want to be environmentally conscious while still getting their performance fill. The laced-up Fisker Karma, is as menacing looking as it is eco-frendly. “King Felix” Hernandez is only 26, but he’s already done what the majority of veteran pitchers dream of achieving in their MLB careers… throw a perfect game. Not only will he go down in baseball’s history books, but he’s set the bar higher with his car game! Beau Boeckmann at G.A.S. has added another accolade to his reputation by becoming the official West Coast Shelby American Authorized Mod Shop that will have all of Shelby’s devoted followers racing through his doors. To commemorate his late friend and to celebrate the new accreditation, he built a head-turning, traffic-stopping 2012 Shelby GT500 widebody that is seriously a beauty to behold. New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis is a big boy who’s rough, tough and into cars. Not many can say they kept their old beater once they started cashing big checks, but not Ellis. He kept his old El Camino from his college days at USC and made sure he dressed her up like it was when it hit the showroom years ago. Finally, we have our old friend Travis Barker. Despite the success, he’s been able to stay pretty modest, but isn’t shy when it comes to talking about his many cars. The self-proclaimed Cadillac man has added a few more to his collection and has recently ventured into the off-road truck realm with his GMC Denali. Oh, and his downright sick new tour bus is the envy of the poor saps still boarding planes to get around. 2012 was quite the year for car culture, and 2013 looks to be even bigger. Stay plugged in to DUB on the web to stay informed of what’s hot on the streets. Enjoy 81!

THE GENERAL
DUB INVADES THE ATL
Brian Deegan is the man! I’ve seen n him tear it up at the last two X Games mes when he competed in the Rally Carr races. He’s seriously one tough athlete! I’m a huge Metal Mulisha fan and sport the brand in my clothes, on my truck (I have a hugee decal on my truck) and was stoked d to read about his new racing career er in your last issue. That guy is unstoppable!
Hands-down, this past Atlanta stop of the 2012 DUB Show Tour was the best yet! I’ve been to all of the ATL DUB Shows and nothing compares to this one...more cars, cool booths and Snoop! He really put on a great show, with his band and dropping his hits and a few of his new Snoop Lion jams. Thanks for providing me and the entire ATL region with a memorable day.
Zach B Rancho Cucamonga, CA
CJ L. Atlanta, GA
Yeah, Deegan is the man! He’s a cool mofo and let us have some fun at his dirt track when we shot him at the Metal Mulisha Compound mpound (which was a blast!). He’s talented and down to Earth, which makes him such an admirable athlete and he’s super competitive without being too obnoxious about it...which is what we liked about him, too!
That show was the ish, CJ! Snoop put it down with the hits and his live band really made his performance one of the best the 2012 DUB Show Tour has had! We’re still talking about it at the office and consider ourselves very lucky to have had one of history’s greatest rappers at one of our shows...and Atlanta was very lucky to have been the city to have witnessed his musical greatness. And his new Snoop Lion persona is pretty cool, too!
DREAM WHEELS
LYRICAL AUTOMOTIVE AFICIONADO Lupe Fiasco is one of my all-time favorite rappers. He still keeps it real and isn’t like these young cats new to the game who talk about whack sh*t, thinking they’re all that and sh*t. He spits tight rhymes that make you think and they’re all backed up by fresh beats that aren’t annoying. It was real cool to see my man shown in a different light and hear him talk ’bout his love for cars. I’m a huge fan and know all of his songs, but never knew he could really spit out hardcore knowledge when it came to shop talk. His widebody Camaro is fly and I’m feelin’ his Jeep with the snorkel! Spitta_Fire Via Email
John Ramos’ towering F-250 is badass! He literally has my dream ride, and I’m now determined to get one like his (except I want mine black and will probably murder it out). But I’m feeling all the exterior mods he added and want a Kelderman lift just like his. Now that I have the perfect picture of my dream ride, all I have to do is save some money ’cause I know it ain’t gonna be cheap!
The hip-hop game isn’t as it used to be, that’s for sure, but Lupe Fiasco isn’t like any other rapper out there. He has talent, knowledge and loves cars...but not for flash or show. He appreciates the history of a car and goes to great depths to learn all there is about a particular model he really loves. This and his approach to his music makes us respect the lyricist even more!
Tanner L. Via Email That truck of his is a MONSTER! When we see him driving in the driveway at the office in it, we move out of the way! It’s super clean and slick that it begs for attention everywhere it goes. We’ve ridden in it a couple of times and it handles great and allows you to see everything on the road given its high lift. Good luck saving that cash, ’cause even Ramos admits that the build was a bit pricy, but totally worth every penny!

MERCEDES-BENZ SLS AMG ELECTRIC DRIVE WWW.MBUSA.COM
The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive coupe will offer 740 hp, all-wheel-drive and a body that looks like liquid metal. Mercedes had to go to extensive lengths to make sure the electric-powered SLS AMG would be one-up on its gas-powered peers. Powering the AMG Electric Drive Benz are lithium-ion batteries developed with the help of Mercedes Formula 1 engineers, packed into the tunnel where the driveline and transmission used to reside. Using two electric motors on each axle,
Mercedes was able to program the SLS AMG so that each wheel can be spun and braked independently, which provides better handling. Its 60 kWh of battery storage is the same as the mid-range version of the Tesla Model S, and Mercedes said the SLS can go about 155 miles on a single charge. The cost (in Germany) will be about $536,804, making it the most expensive vehicle Mercedes-Benz has sold since the demise of Maybach; it’s also double the price of a new Ferrari 458 Italia.
CHAD JOHNSON’S LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR BY THE AUTO FIRM @OCHOCINCO
Chad Johnson may have lost his job playing for the Miami Dolphins, but his car game is looking hotter than ever with the latest addition of a Lamborghini Aventador that was seen at Alex Vega’s The Auto Firm. The retail price for the exotic is a cool $376,000, plus whatever else he had done to it by The Auto Firm. He first showed off his new ride on his Instagram account, with captions like: “Just grab the new Lamborghini Aventador,” and “Loving my new toy.”

2012 PORSCHE PANAMERA SPORT TURISMO CONCEPT WWW.PORSCHE.COM
The Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Concept is supposed to unite the next generation hybrid drive with new styling and is said to be the “possible Porsche sports car of tomorrow.” It’s powered by an evolved form of Porsche’s current hybrid system that’s currently used in the Panamera S Hybrid, but their new system uses the 333-horsepower, supercharged 3.0-liter V6 and a 95-hp electric motor for 416 combined horses and a 18-mile electric range. What’s new about this system is that this
hybrid system prioritizes all-electric motivation unless the driver instructs the car otherwise. The Sport Turismo can also be used as a plug-in hybrid, as the lithium-ion pack can be charged in as little as 2.5 hours when plugged into a wall outlet. According to Porsche, the concept can go from 0-62 mph in under six seconds when the gas engine and electric motors are running simultaneously and can exceed 80 mph on just its electric power.

FACTORY TUNED AUDIO EXCELLENCE
AL & ED’S LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR PHOTOS: COURTESY OF AL & ED’S
L
amborghinis are already superior vehicles that have it all—style, performance and more—but when owners want to add a bit more personality to their exotic, Elie Rothstein at Al & Ed’s West Hollywood knows just how to carefully treat your precious Lambo. He recently outfitted one of the first Lamborghini Aventadors to hit the States (No. 3 to be exact) for his best client that has already had him modify a Ferrari 458 Italia, Aston Martin DBS Volante, Nissan GT-R and Audi Q7. “Al and Ed’s West Hollywood has a reputation within the Lamborghini community because of our relationship with various dealerships throughout Southern California and my involvement as the Director of the California region for the Lamborghini Club of America,” Rothstein reveals. The car was brought to Al & Ed’s West Hollywood from Lamborghini Beverly Hills back in March, which was a year after the exotic was ordered. And since the owner is such a good friend and customer of Rothstein’s, he was involved in every aspect of the ordering process and already has the customization plan in place even before he began work on the highly exclusive Aventador. “We already knew what we were going to do to the Aventador before we ordered it, so we opted out on several bespoke options that Lamborghini provides its customers since we knew they’d be a waste.” As far as customizations, Rothstein and his top client knew they wanted to foremost protect the Aventador’s exterior as much as possible. To do so, Rothstein applied a 3M clear bra film to protect the front end, rocker panel and door edges. Since the vehicle’s special Arancio 46 DUBMAG WINTER 2012
Argos color scheme (exclusive to the Aventador) included some matte finishes, he chose to use a matte clear bra film (also from 3M) to keep those areas matte and not shiny like a regular clear bra would make it. Because the client always likes to have special wheels on his rides, Rothstein enlisted the help of Forgiato Wheels to fit the Aventador with threepiece forged 20-inch front and 21-inch rear F2.09 rims. This is the first Aventador to receive a set of three-piece forged wheels, and they were finished in a two-tone paint scheme that perfectly matches the color of the exotic. Pirelli P Zero Neros provided the perfect fitment with 255/30R20 for the front and 355/25R21 for the rear. Performance was next, which included an upgraded exhaust system that not only reduced the Aventador’s weight, but also increased its boisterous roar and provided additional horsepower. “By removing the factory exhaust, the exotic looks
WINTER 2012 DUBMAG 47
better, sounds better and drives faster, which are all priorities for the client,” Rothstein says. But the owner’s favorite modification is the custom sound system Rothstein and his team provided the Aventador. “Even though it comes with a new and improved audio system, if you’ve had aftermarket audio before, then you’re spoiled and no factory system can compete, no matter how nice it is,” Rothstein explains. Because the owner spares no cost in terms of sound upgrades and wants everything to be audiophile
quality, the team replaced its factory speakers and amplification, added bass via subwoofers, but kept the stock in-dash head unit. “We added 3-inch midrange and tweeter speakers in the upper portion of the doors, and since we were inspired by the rear taillights and their aviation look, we incorporated their style into the plexiglass protective grilles that we
fabricated for the doors,” he explains. “So now the car has a three-way speaker system provided by Focal, using their Utopia Kit. No. 7 component speaker system (which are the world’s most expensive and best speakers in car audio that retail for more than $5,500 a set). Behind the seats we fabricated a sub enclosure and used a Kenwood eXecelon Series carbon fiber 10-inch subwoofer and finished the enclosure with orange and black leather trim to match the existing color combination of the interior of the Aventador.” To power the entire custom system, two Alpine PDX series digital amplifiers were used, providing a total of 1,800W of power for the entire system. Rothstein also customized the exotic’s floor mats using an artist’s talents to hand carve the Lamborghini crest out of orange carpet to give the interior a personalized touch. Throughout the entire build process, Rothstein didn’t have to change his initial customization plan since they already knew what the car’s interior would look like and were aware of their limitations. “If anything, once we finally got the car, our design actually improved because we had the chance to really appreciate and become inspired by the car and incorporate existing elements like its color and carbon fiber throughout our build.” As one of the company’s best builds to date, Rothstein tells that the owner loves his new Aventador so much that he asked Rothstein to help him sell his Ferrari since he doesn’t want to drive anything else but the new Lamborghini!

M
any purely think that tattoos are about self-expression, but for Travis Barker its deeper than that. As a walking canvas that vividly depicts various memories of family and friends, each telling a story about his life, Travis finds it hard to pick out a favorite since each one means something different. But he does mention that his passion for tattoos helped propel him to become the popular musician he is now. “When I was a trash man in Laguna Beach, I started to get a lot of tattoos. It was my way of forcing myself to go hard for what I love (which is drumming) so that I wouldn’t allow myself to get comfortable being a trash man. I tattooed my neck, hands and forearm, so I wouldn’t be able to get a normal job. All I knew was that I wanted to play music no matter how rich I became or poor I stayed, and getting tattoos helped force me to make it happen.” Tattooed from head-to-toe, the iconic drummer points out a few blank spots and explains how he’s looking forward to covering them with ink. The flesh-colored skin are reminders from where his skin was burned during the 2008 plane crash that changed his life forever. “They all hurt, but not the point where I want them to stop,” the famed drummer tells us when we ask about the pain that comes with some of the craziest spots (like his head). “Over the years, I’ve gotten so used to it. I have so many that I’m not sure how many I have anymore. I have some open space from where my skin was burnt off from the accident in 2008, so I’m looking to cover up those spaces.” His theory has obviously paid off since he is one of the most recognized drummers in today’s music scene. Influenced by a number of the best drummers in music history, it’s Animal from “The Muppets” who Travis attributes as his all-time inspiration for fueling his musical interests. “I always loved Animal’s style and he was a huge influence,” he confesses. “I’ve never been interested in playing guitar or being a singer; drums is what I’ve always been passionate about. It’s something I’ve never grown out of. I think I love drums more now at 36 than when I was kid.” That passion for the art of drumming can definitely be seen throughout the course of his 20-plus year career. He’s been a member WINTER 2012 DUBMAG 57
of several groups over the years, including The Transplants with Tim Armstrong and Skinhead Rob, The Aquabats, he’s toured and played drums with the Vandals, +44 and is best known for his affiliation with Blink-182. He also pioneered the DJ/Drummer trend with the late DJ AM, forming TRV$DJ-AM. “I love that everyone does it now,” he confesses. “It’s so cool that it’s now popular for a drummer to play with a DJ. Anytime you can open doors with your instrument, or whatever you do for profession, is when you win. It’s rad to see drum remixes to favorite hip-hop songs or that electronic DJs are collaborating with drummers. It’s all about taking drumming to new levels and that’s what I’m most proud of when I get to be a part of other genres. Being able to express myself in music other than punk rock has been a huge accomplishment for me; it’s monumental and groundbreaking.” Considering his career a “dream come true,” Travis attributes his longevity and success to staying humble and knowing that he can still grow and improve his talent while never letting that passion die down.

Everyday I wake up feeling blessed to make a living on what I love most. I’d even do this if I wasn’t making all sorts of money. That’s just how much I love it. In the beginning, I just wanted to do what I loved and be able to pay the bills. Even though I’m able to do that and more, I’m still amazed at the fact that I’m living my dream. I still smack myself all the time to make sure I’m not dreaming.”
Good things come to those who wait. It took Travis awhile before he found the perfect ‘51 Chevy. Now it’s bagged and booted with a fresh set of custom Smoothies and white walls which he posted up on Instagram a few weeks after the original shoot.

Besides his passion for drumming, Travis’ other love is cars, especially old school rides (preferably Cadillacs), a trait he inherited from his father. “My pops loved cars, and between looking at car magazines and the old rusted Cadillac we had in the backyard, it was something that naturally caught my attention.” His first old school was a beat up ’63 Cadillac, which actually caught on fire on the side of the freeway while going to a show, but Travis admits the fascination with one of America’s storied automakers was only heightened. His next big vehicle purchase was a ’66 Cadillac Coupe de Ville that he still owns to this day and claims it as one of his favorites. Over the years, he’s racked up numerous rides with his most favorite purchase being his new 2012 GMC Sierra Denali truck, which he brought to the DUB Garage for a wheel, tire and suspension upgrade. “I picked this truck ’cause I wanted something to have fun in and not worry about getting dinged in the parking lot or anything,” he says. “When I’m in some of my other cars, like the old schools or Bentley, I’m always paranoid they might get messed up. I like having something I can mash out in and run sh*t over with. Other than the guys at Platinum [Motorsport], DUB is the only other shop I’ll let work on my cars.” The DUB Garage team and experts from King Shocks fitted Travis’ truck with their OEM Performance Series Shocks which are made with the same components as their racing shocks. It was a direct bolt on to the stock truck and will

A set of TIS Off-Road wheels with custom Famous Stars & Straps center caps wrapped in Nitto Trail Grappler M/T tires replaced the stock set to complete the upgrade. Travis then took it to Platinum where they added a custom grille and changed up the interior from being wood grain to piano black
oak, as well as changed all the chrome moldings to black. “It’s murdered-out and has a cleaner look now,” he mentioned weeks later when we stopped by to check out his other favorite ride: his custom 2013 Prevost tour bus built by Marathon Coach. his tour stops. To benefit from the long hours on the road, the $2 million-plus custom tour bus allows him to travel with numerous guests, unwind a bit and be productive. “Its where I live for months at a time,” he says. “I get to finish work for Famous Stars and Straps, work on new music, put in some drumming practice in the back of the bus and then just chill and unwind since it has all sorts of amenities like Internet, satellite TV and more. It fits my family when they come out with me to shows and even other acts I’m a part of. Mix Master Mike and Yelawolf have both toured with me on this bus.” After providing us a tour on his luxurious bus, he showed off his other garage additions: a ’51 Chevy truck, ’64 Riviera and ’63 Impala. Barker had been in the market for an old school truck for some time because he didn’t want one that had been “molested” by other owners and finally found his perfect match with the red ’51. With a clean palette to work with, he added new wheels and bagged it so that it can sit low to the ground. His Buick Riviera is one of his daily drivers and sports a matte black paint scheme with a gold sparkled roof, while the Impala was bought from a good friend and came “juiced up” with hydraulics and sat on Daytons. “I put some Supremes on it and switched out the hydros to air bags to make it sit low. I love that car. It’s seriously up there as one of my all-time favorites.” With so many rides to choose from, he considers them like one of his kids, where singling out a favorite would be impossible.“I drive them all, depending on what I’m doing that day, how I’m feeling and even let my kids pick out what they feel like riding in on any particular day,” he says. “But right now I’m spending a lot of time in the tour bus doing all kinds of shows with Blink, Mix Master Mike and Yelawolf. Yela and I have our Psycho White EP dropping in November, and then soon after, sometime in 64 DUBMAG WINTER 2012

either January or February, the new Transplants album will be released, so I’m going to be on the road a lot.” Something that isn’t surprising from one of music’s most hardworking artists, who is involved with so many side projects. “In a way everything I do is therapeutic for me. All I know how to do is play the drums and produce
music, which is why my life is a dream come true everyday. I’ll never forget what [DJ] AM once told me, ‘Find something you love so much you’d do it for free, then find a way to get paid for it.’ I’ve been lucky to do so and I would do this for free if I had to. All these extra things are extras for me. It’s that love for music that keeps me going.”
TB’s home away from home is his custom “Stormtroopered out” 2013 Prevost bus built by Marathon Coach. The interior was inspired by one of his homes and includes all the amenities he needs on long road trips. The tour bus is worth more than $2 million.

DOMINICK CRUZ DOMIN8TING ON THE STREETS AND IN THE OCTAGON
WORDS: NICK HALILI PHOTOS: VIKTER FUENTEZ
N
on-stop motion. This describes UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz in all aspects of his life. Ever since he first laced up a pair of wrestling shoes as a skinny 10-year-old, his signature trait has been to utilize speed over brute strength. Today, he’s known as one of the quickest, hardest-to-hit mixed martial arts fighters in the world, compiling a 19-1 record en route to his current world title reign. Out of the Octagon, Cruz is no different. After briefly considering a Dodge Viper, Dominick found the perfect whip to complement both his fighting style and personality in his black obsidian 2012 Nissan GT-R, the legendary all-wheel-drive hybrid of power and agility. However, Dominick has seen both the highest highs and the lowest lows of his career this past year. After successfully defending his title four times in a row, Cruz was asked by Dana White to be one of the coaches and stars of “The Ultimate Fighter: Live” on FX against the only man to ever defeat him in MMA, Urijah Faber. Although Cruz had already avenged this loss in a July 2011 rematch, the two fighters were to complete the trilogy with the rubber match after the end of the season. But before Cruz could get the chance to fight his arch-nemesis one last time, he suffered the worst injury of his career: a torn ACL in his left knee. The man who is always in motion was finally forced to slow down. DUB Magazine got a chance to talk to the champ about his rise in MMA, his injury, and his plan to come back better than ever in early 2013. Growing up, did you have any idea that you would become a fighter? I’ve been wrestling since I was 10, but anyone who knew me as a kid is probably in shock to know that I’m fighting for a living. To be honest, it shocks me sometimes. I didn’t even know I had it in me. I remember watching Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, Matt Hughes, thinking these guys are nuts! 72 DUBMAG WINTER 2012
The UFC Bantamweight Champion gets some pad work in with Alliance MMA Head Coach Eric Del Fierro.
What changed your mind about getting into MMA? Over time, the more you watch it, the more you want to try it. When I started taking boxing classes and sparring, right off the bat, I realized that when I got hit, it made me angry and made me want to hit back. It kept me driven. I had my first fight about seven months after my first boxing class. Thank God I went in there and tried it!
Even though you started out as a wrestler, you’re fighting style utilizes a lot of the footwork and defense in boxing. How did that come about? I decided that I’m going to work on never being hit. It sounds kind of crazy, but I watched a lot of the best boxers in the world and thought that if I can steal some of those things and add it to MMA, I’ll be a step ahead of the curve.
WINTER 2012 DUBMAG 73
Getting back to the fight game, how do you stay involved in the sport without being able to train like you normally do? I enjoy coaching and helping other people in this sport that has given me so much. I didn’t have a ton of people to coach me and help me out until I moved to San Diego and met Eric Del Fierro, so I’d like to try to be there for the [new fighters] coming up. I do some analyst work [for UFC events] on Fox and Fuel TV. What can fans look forward to during these next few months, as you get closer to your return to the Octagon? First of all, thank you to all the fans. The support from fans has been money. I’m at all of the [UFC] events, cornering a lot of the fighters from Alliance Training Center. All the Monster-sponsored motorsports events and Famous events, I’ll be there. Follow me on Twitter, @TheDomin8r.

Who are the boxers who have influenced you the most? You’ve got to watch Manny Pacquiao. You’ve got to watch Floyd (Mayweather). But you always hear about one person first when they talk about footwork, and that’s Muhammad Ali. Nobody could figure out how to deal with him. I thought, “I’ve got to steal a page out of his book!” So much of your fighting style is about movement and quickness, what has been the toughest part of dealing with your current knee injury? The hardest thing is not being able to put 100% into my training. I’ve always used training and working out to help me deal with everything in my life. Right now, I don’t have that option. I have to find different outlets for my adrenaline rush. It’s helped me learn a lot about myself. Although it might be different than being in an MMA fight, what do you do outside of the Octagon to get your adrenaline fix? I enjoy taking my (GT-R) out to the track sometimes. I’ll take my car out (on the street) and go as fast as I can…legally [laughs]. I also have a
74 DUBMAG WINTER 2012
huge interest in motorsports. When I rode in a pace car [for a NASCAR event], it was one of the craziest things to be able to feel the power of those cars. How different is it being on a track with those racecars versus driving a street car? Those cars are like a motor with a seat strapped to it. They’re insanely powerful! Just having them pull up next to me gave me a whole new respect for how fast those guys drive, how well they control (their cars), and how difficult and exhausting it is to drive in long races like that. What other motorsport events have you been able to check out? (Off-road racers) BJ Baldwin, “Twitch” (Jeremy Stenberg), all these guys that ride for Toyo and Monster, I’ve been able to meet them and go to some of their truck races. BJ was getting ready for a race and he took me on a few practice runs with him. The way that they drive those trucks through the desert is nothing short of amazing.

From your perspective as a champion and as a coach, what advice do you have for someone in the position you were once in: a huge fan of the sport who is dreaming about making that step toward becoming a fighter? If you’re looking to be a professional athlete on the top tier of any sport, my best advice is to put everything you have into it. If you’re not, somebody else is. It’s got to be all or nothing. You’ve got be willing to sacrifice anything to go after the goal you want: girlfriends, friends, time, partying, money, everything. When you can get to that point, to that humbling experience, then that’s when you’ll get to be your best.

I
t all started with a hot summer wedding. Jake and Jay stood by the microphone in front of 300 guests that seemed more focused on the buffet set-up than actually listening to the best man’s speech. One man looked on eagerly, however. After all, he had seen Jake and Jay turn the open bar into an impromptu stand-up comedy show just minutes before. These guys are going to deliver, he thought. A minute and a half later, the boys walked off the stage to a standing ovation, graciously accepting glasses of champagne like they were Dixie cups of water for a marathon runner. And as they approached the buffet line for fajitas, the man greeted them and introduced himself as Myles Kovacs. “You guys were awesome,” he said. “Let me buy you a drink.” In a regular story, they would shoot the breeze with Myles before going their separate ways forever. But a couple months later Jake and Jay hit a car event that was in town for one last day and saw a familiar face. The boys that stole the show from the wedding had been reunited with their biggest fan. Myles invited Jake and Jay back to the DUB booth to show off the newest rides they had on display. As it turned out, Jake and Jay were big time car guys. They talked shop with Myles for about twenty minutes, discussing everything from design concepts to dream cars to cup holder preferences. Myles was taken aback with their passion for cars, and it was at that moment that he realized that these guys could be a lot more than just casual acquaintances. A vision of a business opportunity lingered in his thoughts. Myles saw their contrasting personalities—Jay as a speed and performance savant and Jake passionate about today’s environmentally friendly cars—as the perfect voice for his newest project: making a green car cool. A few months later Jake and Jay found themselves on the set for “The DUB Magazine Project,” filming an episode that would air in November. 80 DUBMAG WINTER 2012
WINTER 2012 DUBMAG 81
For Jake and Jay, another day at the office now meant driving around in a $100,000-plus Fisker Karma and talking about ways to improve it. After shooting, Myles introduced the guys to Valvoline, sensing another possible opportunity. They were also impressed by the pair’s oncamera camaraderie, and when Jake and Jay mentioned a webisode series they were trying to produce, Valvoline’s interest grew even more. With Myles serving as the liaison, the two parties quickly partnered up and put the wheels in motion for launching the webisodes as a part of an end-of-year digital effort from Valvoline. We caught up with Jake and Jay to discuss dream cars, future plans and best man speeches.
Jay, how would you best describe Jake? Jay: He’s just that dude that’s everyone’s friend. He’s not only into cars, he’s into the great outdoors, so that’s why you see him appreciate the environment a lot more than the average guy. That’s also why you see him try to get with any girl that moves. Jake: I’m the rare guy that appreciates beauty on the inside. [Laughs] Jay: Yeah, right. [Laughs] What about Jay? Jake: He is the Michael Jordan of spending two hours to get ready to go out on the weekends. Jay: C’mon, man. Jake: You take at least a half hour.
Jay: Look good, feel good, my man. Jake: But seriously, he’s the guy that pushes me. I like to go off and do crazy stuff as much as the next guy, but he always helps take it up another level. Like the best man’s speech? Jake: Exactly. Can you give us a brief highlight? Jay: There’s a formula to the best man’s speech. It can’t be longer than a couple of minutes, and it’s gotta include a joke or a funny story, a sentimental man friend moment and a compliment on how nice the bride looks. Jake: We took our speech notes and basically listed off great characteristics about our buddy. It was like a laundry list: smart, super funny and loyal. And then the qualities got a little crazier: strong, OK-looking guy...
cars after watching the first The Fast and the Furious movie. Jake: Naturally, I became interested by hanging out with Jay. I grew passionate about muscle cars and design, but I also appreciate how today’s cars use technology to boost horsepower and fuel savings. What’s your dream car? Jake: The Fisker Karma we worked on for “The DUB Magazine Project” was pretty sweet, but I need a 4x4. Maybe a hybrid Jeep or something else I can go off-roading with. Jay: A toss up between a 2012 Shelby Mustang GT500 Super Snake or a Dodge Challenger 392 Hemi.
Jay: We eventually stopped, turned to our friend and said, “I’m sorry dude. We tried. You just have the worst handwriting on Earth.” That’s awesome. So we know you’re big car guys. How did your first get into that? Jay: It started when I was a kid. I pretended to work on cars while my dad was tinkering in the garage. I couldn’t get enough of speed and hot Jake and Jay opted for a set of 24-inch Forgiato 2.0 Magila ECL wheels wrapped in Falken FK 452 275/25R24 front and 275/30R24 rear tires for the Fisker Karma they helped build.

WINTER 2012 DUBMAG 83
What were your first impressions of Myles? Jake: If he hadn’t given us his card at the wedding, I would have never guessed that he was the founder of DUB. And as we continued working with him, he was way cooler than we imagined and totally down to Earth.
on timing. We all worked fast, but made sure everything was done right. You guys have had a pretty crazy six months. What’s next? Jay: It’s crazy, man. We’re both still in utter disbelief; we’ve certainly been blessed so far. We are also gonna be starring in a webisode series for Valvoline that is set to air online later this month. Basically, we are able to once again drive around in sick cars and be ourselves.
Jay: My kind of guy… When Myles approached you guys to be consultants for the segment on the “The DUB Magazine Project,” what ideas did you bring to the table? Jay: We needed the car to represent the concept of performance combined with environmental responsibility. Jake: And we needed to do all of this in one day… which was quite a challenge. Jay: That’s why we decided to go with the Fisker Karma. Jake: We took this sick car and made a few “improvements.”
Jake: And get paid to do it. How hands-on were you guys during the process of the project? Jake: We got to help strategize and “build.” Just being a part of the strategy was crazy. We got to sit in Myles’ office and hash out ideas. Ultimately, the Fisker is a beautiful car, so we didn’t want to do too much to it, and we only had one day to do everything. Jay: We consulted hands-on with the DUB team. It was nerve-racking to get it all done with such a tight deadline, and we were down to the wire
Jay: The director and crew have been amazing, and we’re really excited to see the finished product. You can check out the webisodes on the DUB Facebook fan page, as well as on YouTube. I’m crossing my fingers that they are as enjoyable to watch as they were to work on. Jake: No doubt. And be sure to check out what we’re up to at www.jakeandjay.com. The last six months have been an amazing ride. We’re excited to see where it takes us from here.
Jake and Jay needed a car to represent the concept of performance combined with environmental responsibility, which is why they decided on the Fisker Karma.
Jay: For some reason I don’t think Henrik [Fisker] would agree with that, Jake. [Laughs] Jake: We gave suggestions on wheels and tires, suspension and body accessories, but we also didn’t want to drift too far from what the Fisker already is. What are your favorite features of the car? Jay: Horsepower. The thing has serious guts, and the moment you even tap the pedal, it hustles. Jake: The solar panel on the roof. I mean come on…how can you compete with that? Jay: You are so predictable. [Laughs] 84 DUBMAG WINTER 2012

IT FELT SO UNREAL. THAT NIGHT SOMETHING JUST FELT DIFFERENT. EVEN IN THE DUGOUT, MY TEAM KNEW SOMETHING WAS UP WITH ME BECAUSE I WASN’T REALLY TALKING TO ANYONE LIKE I’D USUALLY DO.
S
eattle Mariners’ pitcher Félix Abraham Hernández García, aka King Felix, not only reigns supreme on the pitcher’s mound, but he has also recently been crowned royalty in baseball history, thus making his moniker even more appropriate. The 26-year-old right-handed starting pitcher had the game of his life back in August, when he pitched a perfect game against the Tampa Bay Rays, resulting in a brilliant 1-0 victory and one hell of a celebratory day for both the clubhouse and fans. “It felt so unreal,” he describes. “That night something just felt different. Even in the dugout, my team knew something was up with me because I wasn’t really talking to anyone like I’d usually do.” To many, it came as no surprise. The Venezuelan pitcher has long been touted as one of the game’s best pitchers around. He took home the Cy Young award in 2010 and continues to be a leading contender of the innings-pitched and Strikeout categories in all of MLB. His perfect game on August 15th is merely the 23rd time it’s been done in Major League history and only the second time it has been done by a foreign-born pitcher (it’s also the first in Mariners’ history). His talent combined with a very charismatic personality, makes him a beloved figure in Seattle, helping the clubhouse increase ticket sales and attendance numbers. To achieve his perfect game, King Felix used his mid-90s fastball and changeup, which caught the Rays by surprise. That night, he struck out 12 batters, including five of the last six hitters he faced. He allowed five balls to leave the infield and didn’t need the help of an awesome catch or spectacular play to preserve the no-hitter; instead he relied on his talent and perseverance. Despite his crowning achievement, King Felix is still very humble about his amazing accomplishment. “It was something always in my mind, but it wasn’t always what fueled my performance since I always go out there looking 86 DUBMAG WINTER 2012

As the end of the game got closer and closer, I was just telling myself that I’ve got to do it. By the ninth inning, I was a bit nervous, but was able to pull it off! I’m just proud of what I did and will continue to go into each game trying to have my best night regardless. That’s always been my top priority.” Signed by the Mariners in 2002, King Felix made his MLB debut in 2005 when he was only 19. Over the years, his talent has been key for the Mariners’ franchise, igniting an increase in fans and support. When he first started out the season, he admits he wasn’t always consistent, and worked hard on increasing his consistency. “I’ve been working really hard to perfect my throws, which is always on my mind, game or no game,” he says. “I’m one of those players who goes above and beyond to make sure that I’m

throwing well no matter what. Even on days I don’t feel like practicing, I have to always tell myself that it needs to be done for the sake of my game.” And because of his intense work ethic, it’s only fair that King Felix treats himself to a growing collection of fine rides. Still in its early phases, his garage touts a Mercedes-Benz GL, Nissan GT-R, Range Rover, Porsche Cayenne Turbo and a recently purchased Mercedes-Benz S65. “I wanted a fast car and once I saw the Nissan GT-R, I new it was the one for me,” he admits. “The GL is my wife’s car, while the Range Rover is the perfect family car. great for family trips, but has added performance, which is why I liked it and wanted it to stand out. Right now my favorite is the GT-R, but that might change as I get used to the new S65.” For all his customization needs, King Felix calls up his good friend Jhulio Tadeo of MC Customs in Miami, who he met through former teammate Carlos Silva. The two have been working together for the past four years, with Jhulio first working on his Cadillac Escalade, which is his transportation when visiting Venezuela. “Felix is the most humble individual you can ever meet,” Tadeo describes. “He is as loyal and as true as they come. As far as his cars go,

Felix likes to go all out— music, engine, kits, wheels and full-on personalization. He likes it all! He’s like a kid in a candy store when it comes to customizing his cars.” Tadeo also admits that while he may suggest a lot of mods to Hernandez, most of the time, he’s the one that comes up with ideas first.
With a car game fit for royalty, King Felix does admit the he’d like to one day add an exotic to his lineup, opting for either a Ferrari or Lamborghini. “Right now I’m not sure which one I’ll get, but all I know is that I want one. They both are good-looking cars and I wouldn’t mind having both, but I still have time to make my decision.” And that’s not all the young pitcher has on his mind. THE FRESHEST RIDES: DRIVEN
2012 BMW M6 CONVERTIBLE CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON WORDS: MIKE DALY PHOTOS: COURTESY OF BMW
W
hile recently testing BMW’s latest iteration of the M6, which had disappeared from the market for two years before a convertible rebirth this summer (now being joined in showrooms by a 2013 coupe), I struggled to think of an appropriate metaphor for the sporty open-air looker’s underlying power. Until, a scene from Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the Oscar-winning 2001 Hong Kong art-house kung fu film, came to mind. During a catfight of epic proportions, Michelle Yeoh’s experienced warrior points out to her young opponent (played by Zhang Ziyi) that despite her prodigious beyond-her-years
fighting skills, the beautiful young girl can barely handle the mighty power of the stolen wudang sword (aka the Green Destiny) that wobbles uncontrollably with a life of its own. Such is the case with the new M6. Though the beautiful third-generation 6-Series body rides a reengineered chassis, the newly developed S63Tü motor throbs with barely-contained power, not unlike the magical Green Destiny. And also like the wudang sword, the S63Tü isn’t exactly a brand new piece of hardware. The high-revving, twin-turbocharged V8 was originally utilized as the powerplant for the M version of the X5 SUV; in other words, a motor specifically designed to
produce a lot of torque for hauling heavy loads, with some degree of fuel efficiency at lower rpm. The minds at BMW took this already-powerful V8 and made a few tweaks for the M6, resulting in an output of 560 hp and 500 lb.-ft. of torque, the latter of which is available as low as 1,500 rpm. For those of you keeping track of such things, these figures make the S63Tü the most powerful engine ever equipped in a series-produced BMW. Which brings us to the lovely Zhang Ziyi, who, if the metaphor holds true, can be likened to the M6’s curvy body with its new kidneyshaped grille, and accentuated fender arches that accommodate a track 30mm wider than the base 6-Series. As previously mentioned, the chassis does have skills, with a suspension that has been completely reengineered by the M division. The integral rear axle sub-frame has unusually been hard-bolted to the body for superior rigidity, which is readily apparent in the car’s firm handling. On top of that, the active M differential (which includes its own electric motor) has been programmed in concert with the car’s tractioncontrol computers to limit rear-inside wheel torque during particularly hard cornering to prevent oversteer. It’s technology worthy of the Green Destiny’s brute strength, no doubt. But like the erratic performance of Zhang Ziyi with the wobbling sword, the results of the M6’s programming can be a bit of a mixed bag, as I found out trying to keep up with a dealerplated Scion FR-S through the twisting canyons of Calabasas, CA. Every time we hit a hard turn, the lightweight Scion would pull away, while my comparatively heavy test car (curb weight 4,508 lbs.) would sometimes prematurely activate WINTER 2012 DUBMAG 97
the traction control, limiting my intended rate of acceleration while exiting from the turn. Of course, I could have turned the traction control off completely, but having been warned by company PR personnel that the M6 can get out of control in a hurry without the system on to manage all that torque, and keeping in mind the steep and unforgiving ravines at my sides, I opted to let the Japanese car disappear from view. There’s little doubt he would have been burnt toast had we met on a freeway. While the M6 does claim a chunky curb weight, the S63Tü packs extraordinary punch, giving muscular edge to a car somewhat defined as a luxury grand tourer (this is no M3, after all). The luxury shines through in rewarding ways, with a silky smooth ride quality in comfort mode, and an optional Bang & Olufsen sound system that goes for an extra $3,700. Throw in a nice heads-up windshield display and a 10.2-inch infotainment screen, automatic door closers and front-end cameras, and the M6 offers supercar quality at a fraction of the price tag. Despite the luxury identity of the base 6-Series, the M6 remains a driver’s car, with individually adjustable settings to the suspension stiffness, shift points and steering response available via easy-to-use buttons along the center console, surrounding the handsome M-badged shift knob. A rocker switch also allows the automatic shift points to be tailored to the driver’s preference, while two programmable M 98 DUBMAG WINTER 2012
modes (easily activated via buttons on the M steering wheel) summon individually customized settings of all parameters, to instantly cue up one’s favorite combination of settings.
A dual-clutch 7-speed transmission with paddle shifters provides lightning quick shifting with Formula 1-style precision, capitalizing on the S63Tü’s massive torque and propelling the

M6 from 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds, and from 50-70 mph in a seeming heartbeat. And as a powerplant of this caliber ought to, the M6 is outfitted with first-rate brakes, with 15.7-inch rotors in front, 15.6-inch rotors in the rear and 6-piston calipers all around. A set of 19-inch aluminum wheels are standard, but optional 20inch M light-alloy wheels can be packaged with brand new M carbon-ceramic brakes, the first ever featured in a BMW. Well optioned at less then $130,000, the M6 is a relative bargain, roughly half as expensive as the similarly powerful Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG roadster, and far more performanceoriented than anything Audi has in this class. Potential buyers should take heed, however, of the necessary sword skills required to handle the Green Destiny. There’s a hidden dragon under the M6’s hood, and it’s good for 560 fire-breathing horses, despite what the pretty faced convertible coupe might have you believe…

THE FRESHEST BIKES: RIDDEN
2013 HARLEY-DAVIDSON STREET BOB WORDS: BASEM WASEF PHOTOS: BRIAN J. NELSON, TOM RILES AND HARLEY-DAVIDSON
I
f you could time warp to the early’60s, you’d witness a small, but vibrant motorcycle microcosm where raked-out custom rides explode with acres of chrome and endlessly edible color combinations. The vibe was strong and the statement clear: these bikers had attitude, and their two-wheeled machines reflected an exuberant celebration of unrestrained style. Over the last half-century, fashion trends have swept through the motorcycle world in waves—from the tricked-out choppers of the ’60s to the pastel superbikes of the ’80s—and HarleyDavidson goes back to the Easy Rider era with a new trim line dubbed “Hard Candy Custom.” The name is apt: with colors like Lucky Green and Coloma Gold Flake, these paint jobs look tasty enough to lick, shining in hues accentuated by embedded bits of shimmering metal, which are seven times larger than traditional flakes. The Street Bob is the most updated bike in the 2013 Harley lineup, and offers a full swath of Hard Candy options—from a funky sprung solo seat finished in white leather with contrasting diamond-pattern stitching to leather swingarm bags and, of course, traditional touches like ape hanger bars and forward controls. Changes for ‘13 include a new tank console with a repositioned ignition switch, chopped rear fenders with a cleaner all-in-one stop/turn/taillamp setup, a chromed rounded air cleaner cover, and rubber isolated handlebar risers, which include a forged top clamp for easier customizing. A rubber-mounted Twin Cam 96 V-twin provides 92 ft.-lb. of motivation, routing power through a 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission that turns the rear wheel via a belt. 104 DUBMAG WINTER 2012
DUB’s Street Bob road test covered the winding stretches of highway between the treelined coastal stretches of Washington State and the dizzying Canadian mountain ranges of Whistler, British Columbia. While the Street Bob wasn’t the only bike from the Harley lineup we tested along these roads, it was one of the more
head-turning—especially when decked out with optional Hard Candy parts. Swing a leg over its saddle, which sits only 26.7” above pavement, and you get a back-to-basics cockpit view: other than its big center console-mounted speedo, there’s not a whole lot of distractions aboard the Street Bob (unless, of course, you count the
retina-scorching Big Red Flake paint.) Fire up the 96 cubic-inch (1,584cc) engine— which is bigger than the powerplants you’ll find in a Chevy Spark hatchback—and mellow, thumping soundtrack hits your eardrums, not to mention the seat of your pants. While the Twin Cam 96 provides adequate acceleration
for most situations, an optional 103 cubic-inch setup offers beefier grunt, though you’ll have to kiss your 43-mpg rating goodbye with the bigger powerplant; at least the Street Bob’s hefty 4.7-gallon fuel tank offers a theoretical range of more than 200 miles with the smaller engine, making this bike a better long-distance
WINTER 2012 DUBMAG 105
cruiser than the equally stylish, but “peanut tank-equipped” Sportster models. Those of sensitive dispositions (and rumps) will want to avoid lengthy, high-speed rides on Street Bobs equipped with ape hanger bars or forwardmounted controls; extending your arm and legs creates a wind-in-the-sail sensation that’s fatiguing over the long run. Around town, the Street Bob’s performance defies its spec sheet: though it weighs a ponderous 672 pounds, the bike feels narrow and maneuverable, flicking easily through traffic and offering lean angles of up to 31 degrees on the left, and 30 degrees on the right. The clutch operates with low effort, and gearshifts are crisp easy to find—though there’s a distinct whine when firstt gear is engaged.
Priced from $12,999 in vivid black to $13,729 for custom colors, Harley-Davidson’s Street Bob’s improvements make it a slicker, sexier and ultimately sweeter package for 2013. And now that the model is open to Harley’s H-D1 factory customization program, the fit and style of the Street Bob is open to more than 2,000 combinations of paint and accessories. In spite of modernizations like fuel-injection and ABS, Harley-Davidson taps into a decadesold sense of nostalgia that recalls a golden era of motorcycling when style and road presence were dictated by the individual, not a big faceless manufacturer. It may not be cheap, but HarleyDavidson’s potential for personalization is unparalleled in the motorcycle world, and should go far toward keeping them on the cutting edge of bold, savvy street style.

TALK O
wnage: “The act or state of perpetrating fierce and unholy domination against another, resulting in shame and embarrassment for the victim.” This is exactly what Delanio Garland and his Harley-Davidson, “Real Talk,” did at Bike Week at Myrtle Beach this year. They not only OWNED the first week dedicated to some of the fiercest Harleys to set foot on pavement, but also the second week usually ruled by sport bikes. Taking over “Harley Week,” was a feat on its own, but dominating all rice rockets the second week is an accolade that allows for some serious bragging rights. As Harley-Davidson die-hards left Myrtle Beach just as all the rice rockets began to flow in for their week, Garland and “Real Talk” sat pretty, starring down all the competition with the
A walk around this motorcycle and you’ll be left speechless. And you might have to read this story a few times to really digest the masterpiece you’re feasting your eyes on. What first started as a forgotten artifact, just gathering dust and covered in a maze of cobwebs in TIC’s warehouse was transformed into the highly desired Harley-Davidson Street Glide. “This bike started out as a piece of crap sitting in the corner of the shop for years,” Smith says about the Street Glide’s previous cosmetic and mechanical condition. When Garland purchased this bike during an insurance estimate, he knew one day, that with the right owner, this would be one sweet project. “Wrecked bikes are the best for custom builds, since most of the broken parts would be replaced anyway,” Smith explains.

steel two-wheeled masterpiece that easily became the IT bike of this year’s show. There are usually a few new bikes on the scene that are the talk of the week or “must see” in person, but this was far from the tradition this year. Every where you turned, people were whispering about the “sick as hell” bike that was breaking necks, left and right…BOTH weeks of the show. “Real Talk” is a slammed 2008 Harley-Davidson Street Glide customized with center stand, air ride, smooth saddlebags, DVD touchscreen audio system, rolling on a massive 30-inch front wheel and Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14 fairing. Who built “Real Talk” was one of the most asked questions of the two weeks, which had the guys at Twisted Image Cycles (TIC) of Coshocton, Ohio smiling from ear-to-ear. Mickey Smith, owner of Twisted Image Cycles, is the designer and wizard behind the curtain at the end of this yellow brick road.
It was agreed during the planning stages that TIC needed to come up with something mean and different…and that’s where the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14 fairing came in to radically transform the Harley. Columbus Car Audio was sought out to handle the fairing and sound system needed for such a unique build that Garland envisioned. “I call them the ‘mad scientists,’ because they always have something up their sleeves for something over-the-top,” Garland says. At first, Garland merely thought a head unit would be added, but he certainly underestimated Columbus Car Audio. Instead, they spent extra time to drill a few more holes and a little more fabrication to install a Pioneer DVD head unit to go along with all the Rockford Fosgate mobile audio components. With the bike back at TIC, they immediately tore the bike completely apart, including the motor and transmission for a new paint WINTER 2012 DUBMAG 111

makeover. A dissembled motor provided the perfect opportunity to cut the frame in half at the backbone and the bottom of the tubes. TIC’s welder, Todd Maziar went to work welding and making new down tubes for the frame. The neck was stretched to allow the front wheel to fit and keep the bike at sitting level. With the frame now taken care of, the next stage on the build was a mock up of the body parts. After being assembled as much as possible, “Real Talk” was then transported to Dave Clark, owner of Crowtown Customz, for the paint and body modifications needed for the new look. To help set his builds apart, Clark always makes a trip to the junkyard to find a bumper or hood scoop he could mold into side panels. on this bike, Garland wanted it to be wild but clean, so Clark used standard flared side panels. The two decided to complete the new look with some Organic Green Kandy paint. With that now out of the way, engine parts were painted and a Zipper’s 103-inch big bore kit were assembled back together and re-installed. With all the major modifications completed, detail components were next to tackle. The gas tank, mirrors and dash were replaced with custom parts from Paul Yaffe Originals. A center stand and an Arnott air ride were installed to give “Real Talk” an aggressive lowered stance. The engine guard and handle bars were no exceptions as they were also replaced with Sinister Industries aftermarket parts. The stock seat was replaced with a dark forest green stingray one from A-Tech Upholstery. Arlen Ness goodies weren’t left out of the build either, replacing stock parts like the floorboards, passenger pegs,

Mickey would like to give a special thanks to Columbus Car Audio (fairing and audio), Dave Clark (paint and body modifications), Ageless Iron and Restoration Supplies, Kim Bowers of Bowers Machining and to his crew at TIC Chace Hayes, Howie Guinther and Todd Maziar.

U
p-and-coming Mississippian MC Tito Lopez is well on his way to carving out his own niche in hip-hop culture. Not only is he striving to be the next hip-hop icon, but he’s also looking to influence its culture, with a legacy that will one day be defined by “integrity, honesty and the ultimate underdog.” The intriguing and very articulate 25-year-old artist was just signed to Capitol Records a year ago and he’s already making headlines as being one of today’s authentic acts, a rarity in the current culture of hip-hop. His stirring video for “The Blues” from his latest mixtape “The Hunger Games” that was released this past summer, depicts the everyday struggle of the suburban neighborhood and Tito’s struggle and sacrifice to pursue success, as well as showcases the humility of the rapper and his approach to his craft. The mixtape’s other hit single, “Mama Proud” made it to 91 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and also suggests the rappers humble background. He’s currently in the midst of recording his debut album that’s already gotten the endorsement of Dr. Dre, Sha Money XL and the Dungeon Family. Tito Lopez is one artist you definitely need to keep your ears open for!
Where does your hip-hop story start? My parents were really young when they had me. My mom was just 17, so hip-hop was always being played in my house. My mom loves to tell the story about how my first words were, “Wild, wild, west,” which is the chorus of a popular Kool Moe Dee song. But my first actual memory of hip-hop was when I was three. I used to always watch the movie Do The Right Thing a lot and I can remember rapping along to Public Enemy’s “Fight The Power.” From there, hip-hop became like second nature to me. I loved everything about it and made sure to engulf myself in the culture as much as possible. As you got older, how did your love for it evolve? As I got older, I started to really listen to the lyrics of some of my favorite rappers like Outkast, Biggie, Eminem, Nas and more. I started to understand what they were saying and related to a lot of their themes. I wrote my first rhyme when I was five and just continued writing over the years. I didn’t have many friends growing up so I would let loose in my rhymes. I’ve always been good at English, so it was something that also came natural to me. Junior high is when I really excelled at my rhymes. I first realized I was good at rapping when all the kids at school would stop what they were doing to hear me spit at lunch. But it really started to take off in high school. That’s when I first realized I wanted to make this my career. I started to do more mixtapes and would perform at school dances with my boys and stuff. What rapper had the biggest influence on your music? Man, if I had to name only one it would be Eminem. I was just 13 when I got into his music. At first I thought he was this silly rapper because of his “My Name Is” video, but when I bought his album, I realized how deep his raps were. You could tell he put a lot of thought into his rhyme and I really connected to everything he was saying. I loved how he used his words as weapons and how his songs talked about how he was bullied when he was a kid and how he’s overcome so much. I knew then that I wanted to make music that others could relate to. What steps did you take to ensure rap became your career? I just started putting out mixtapes that I’d make in my bedroom. I became so focused on my music that I knew something good had to come out of it. After I graduated high school I went on the road and started doing small shows. My current manager
142 DUBMAG WINTER 2012
actually heard one of my mixtapes and flew all the way down to Mississippi to meet me, which was crazy. From there we just clicked and had the same vision for rap. After doing more and more shows, I finally got a deal with Capitol Records. What’s it like now that you have a label behind you? It’s cool. As soon as I was signed, I went right to work on music for my debut album. I now have more than enough material, but am currently in the phases of perfecting the songs. I’m enjoying having the time to really master each song while I go out and still grow my fan base and get this buzz around me. I like the label because I’m the underdog over there. The label doesn’t have many rappers, so I’m sort of a top priority in the urban side of things. It also shows that I made it on my own merit and credit despite having worked with people like Dr. Dre. I don’t want people saying I’ve got to where I am now because I got help. I’m fine with it being a hard and challenging road because it just shows that I’ve got the skills and talent to make it. But Capitol also has other great artists like Coldplay and Katy Perry, so it’s an interesting mix of labelmates. How’s your creative process changed since transitioning from mixtapes to making a studio album? I learned that I got better at making actual songs and music rather than just spitting out raw material. Not that raw is bad, but when you go into a studio, things are a lot more organized and there are people there to help you refine your sound and music. The producers I’ve worked with helped me better structure my songs so that it sounds perfect. It’s actually taught me a lot about myself and my creativity. My mixtapes were always approached as if they were albums, but this is entirely on a new level. I’m making records, not merely random beats to rap over. It’s so different and complex at the same time, but in a good way. But I’m still as real as it gets as far as my lyrics and themes to the songs. I like there to be meaning to my lyrics and always use my real life experiences so that people can relate to my songs more. How would you define your overall musical style? I like to call it “underground rap,” and all that means is that I’m speaking from the perspective of that person who was always picked last for teams, that person who wasn’t the popular kid in school, the person who was always thought of as never accomplishing anything or someone who everybody bet against. I was that person and I worked hard to prove those people wrong and make something of myself. Most people are underdogs in life and my music speaks for them; it’s for them. I’m the voice of the underdogs. Being fairly new to the music industry, what are some of the things you’ve been learning about it? You have to be patient about everything. I always knew that good things take time to develop, but it gets harder when you sign a major deal. I never not expected it, but it’s definitely been harder than anticipated. I’m learning that’s just how it goes, but at the same time, it’s allowed me to learn more about myself since I always just have to stay positive and ready for the right moment. I’ve also learned how important interviews and
shows are. The best part about this all has been my family seeing all my interviews and knowing that I’m accomplishing my goals, which in turn makes them really happy. A lot of producers have also taught me about always being myself through my music and to not try to be some character everybody wants me to be. What sets you apart from hip-hop’s other nextgen rappers coming up? I’m also not one to rap about the same old sh*t everybody else is talking about. I stay away from focusing on materialistic subject matter because that’s what everybody is spitting rhymes on. For me, music has to be driven by real life or it’s not going to be relatable to any of my fans. If music is grounded in reality, then fans will feel like you’re
speaking to them and on behalf of them. That’s when you get more support. Material stuff doesn’t matter in the long run because it either phases out or it becomes obsolete. Honesty is important in this industry and that’s why I’m the real deal. What other thing are you currently working on? I’m touring with fellow Mississippi artist Big K.R.I.T. and working on perfecting my album that will hopefully drop before next summer. I’m just trying to really build my name and hope to jump on some more tours for 2013. I might drop another mixtape before the album, though…still thinking about that. But overall, I’m just working hard to set myself apart from others in hip-hop so that people will look forward to my debut release.

eau Boeckmann, President of Galpin Auto Sports (G.A.S.), vividly recalls one of his most memorable experiences with automotive legend Carroll Shelby. “I was most taken aback with one incident when he came into Galpin and asked my dad and I what we thought of some of the projects he was working on,” he reminisces. “I thought, ‘Wow, here’s one of my idols in the industry, asking me what I thought about some of his projects.’ It was so cool just to sit around and chat with Shelby about all things automotive related and more. It’s an honor to have been friends with him and to have known him.”
Boeckmann, his father, Bert, and Galpin have all been involved with one of the world’s most recognized American automotive designer, racer and entrepreneur since the very beginning of his Shelby American, thus paving the way for G.A.S.’ latest recognition of becoming a Shelby American Authorized Mod Shop. The story goes, that Lee lacocca, legendary former Ford and Chrysler President and “father” of the Mustang, introduced Shelby to Boeckmann’s dad Bert in the early 1960s, given both were involved in racing and in the same racing circles. Once Shelby started to build his own cars, he’s noted as referencing both Bert and Bob Tasca as “the two people that got behind it, and if they hadn’t gotten behind it, nobody probably would have heard of the Cobra.” Not only does Galpin Ford (right across the street from G.A.S. and the #1 volume Ford dealer on Earth) already sell the Shelby GT350, GT500 Super Snake, and GTS, but now G.A.S. offers a full-range of genuine Shelby modifications, the only place on the West Coast to do so. “My father’s and Carroll’s relationship goes back 50 years when Galpin Ford became the first Shelby dealer in California. Carroll Shelby was a dear friend, and we miss him tremendously. He was always looking to the future, so for us this is a way we can continue his legacy building amazing cars that honor him.” The only other authorized Shelby Mod Shops are the main factory in Las Vegas, NV and Tasca on the East Coast in Rhode Island, who like Galpin, has a storied history with Shelby. “The Tasca family still remains good friends of ours to this day,” Boeckmann reveals. “My dad and Bob Tasca were WINTER 2012 DUBMAG 153
the first Ford dealers to sign up to sell the Shelby Cobras and GT350s. And back in 2005 when Ford was thinking about bringing back the Shelby Mustang, Bob Tasca III and I were on the product committee at Ford, and were really the ones pushing Ford to rekindle its relationship with Carroll and bring back the Shelby Mustang. I guess history repeated itself!” Since the early-2000s, G.A.S has been one of Southern California’s most recognizable customization shops, building on Galpin’s history of wild builds that stem back to the ’50s through ’70s, when Boeckmann’s dad would turn vans into what we now consider party buses. In 2005, the G.A.S. showroom was officially unveiled and their reputation and ability to build any car to customers’ desires preceded them thanks to amazing talent and a team whose passion burns as intensely as Boeckmann’s for all things automotive related. Already able to modify any car imaginable, being an authorized Shelby Mod Shop allows G.A.S. to take any Shelby car and upgrade its performance and styling, with all the work then endorsed by Shelby American. So any mods performed to the vehicle or any parts added to a stock Shelby bought across the street at Galpin Ford, will be documented in the Shelby Registry that chronicles the entire life of a Shelby vehicle, maintaining the vehicle’s integrity and authenticity as a Genuine Shelby. “This is the cool part for customers,” Boeckmann says. “They get the Shelby magic, and it’s official in the Shelby Registry. For hardcore enthusiasts, this is an extremely important thing. It’s their car’s birth certificate in a way. The document becomes part of that car’s DNA, its history and its future.” Currently, G.A.S. can modify 2007 to present Shelby models, as well as 2005 to current

Mustangs, and can even provide Shelby upgrades to off-brand models like the Ford GT, Corvette, Camaro, Challenger or even an off-road truck like the Raptor. “Each vehicle modified will leave the shop with a Shelby certificate and engine plaque, authenticating the work performed on that vehicle.” Even before it was officially announced, Boeckmann created a 2012 Shelby GT500 widebody to show at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance’s Quail Lodge Motor Sports Gathering to get the buzz about the new appointment started. “I wanted to have a car that really represented what we could do at G.A.S. and how the Shelby Mod Shop addition incorporates to our established business,” he
reveals. “This was a major accomplishment, showing our custom Shelby GT500 alongside of one-off concepts cars. It was really amazing.” Treated to a vast array of custom touches, the widebody was taken out 9-inches via handcrafted sheet metal fabrication, dressed in a special Aston Martin Morning Frost Pearl White paint scheme and given one-off custom threepiece wheels by Forgiato Wheels. Its interior was also upgraded to an Aston Martin level, featuring custom Crimson red raised grain leather, wrapping the seats, dash, doors, headliner, and more–even the trunk. building the first G.A.S. supercar, based on the Ford GT and featuring a bit of Shelby DNA. “Shelby and Ford came out with a concept car called the GR1 a few years ago that was never built, and it’s that spirit that we’re basing our supercar on.” He reveals that it will have an all-aluminum body, push out more than 1,000 ponies, have a custom interior, handcrafted wheels and more. “This is one of the most exciting projects I have ever worked on and we can’t wait to show it. doors and rear deck have McIntosh MSS530 5” component speakers. In the trunk is a custom fiber glass box with a 13.5” JL Audio subwoofer, powered by two McIntosh amplifiers with more than 1,100W of power. Boeckmann will display it again at this year’s SEMA show in Las Vegas. And as the 50th anniversary of the Mustang gets closer in 2015, Boeckmann knows that whatever special model Ford will release will also be a new opportunity for Shelby American. “I think that some feared that when [Shelby] passed away earlier this year that it would be the end of Shelby American,” he admits. “But that couldn’t be farther from the truth. He set up everything to make sure his legacy continued on through the years and that’s what we want to make sure happens with this Mod Shop program. We actually began working on this deal before he passed away, and he was very much in favor of Galpin and Shelby coming together again.” Inside the G.A.S. showroom, Shelby enthusiasts can also find a wide selection of Shelby branded memorabilia, apparel, merchandise, and parts for the Do-It-Yourself enthusiast, creating a unique experience for die-hard fans. La Reina “THE QUEEN” OF SHOW CARS WORDS: DICK De LOACH PHOTOS: STREET VISION PHOTOGRAPHY

ector “Zacatecas” Esquivel, president of the Los Angeles chapter of Nokturnal Car Club, is no stranger to the DUB scene. His Avalanche, “Zacatecas,” named after Esquivel’s parent’s city of birth in Mexico, won several top awards through the years. Not content to rest on his laurels, Esquivel’s second show-stopper was his lime-green fully custom 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe two-door called “Zacatecas II,” that he picked up stock for $2,500 with the intentions of making it his daily driver. “I started with a few simple ideas,” he says. “But, of course, it didn’t end up that way.” Making it show-worthy, it won second place “Best of Show” at the 2010 DUB Show Tour Houston stop, losing to a frame-off truck. This served as inspiration for him to take it to the next level.
Esquivel knew that if he was to stay ahead of the competition and take the highly desired first place, he had to take the Tahoe to its limit—and beyond. “I decided to do the truck Lowrider style,” he says. “So I went to Mexico Collision Center in South Gate, CA, and sat down with Javier “Mexico” Gomez to create a completely new look. Javier started by doing a frame-off build, including filling and boxing the frame, taking everything down to bare metal, gutting the interior and starting over. Most of the makeover, including the multicolored House of Kolor pearl paint, was done by Mexico. What he couldn’t do himself—such as the upholstery, engraving, and mural—he had done by Joe Camacho of California Upholstery in Bell, CA, Jaime at Casteñeda Engraving in La Puente, CA and by Alberto Herrera in Visalia, CA. 160 DUBMAG WINTER 2012

Esquivel said he named the truck “La Reina” from “La Reina del Sur “(The Queen of the South), a Spanish-language telenovela about the rise of Teresa Mendoza, a young woman from Mexico who becomes the most influential female in the Southern Pacific States in Mexico in the illicit trades. “The mural is of the star, Kate del Castillo,” Esquivel describes. The transformation of the truck was done practically “overnight” by custom car standards, taking less than 10 months. “I owe a huge thanks to Javier and the MCC crew, plus my club members (especially Lil Raider, Bear, Ivan Lexoma, Impala King and Richie Rich for all their help) and a special thanks to my wife Lucy and son, Hector Jr., for putting up with me during the rebuild.” But the hard work and persistence definitely paid off because it finally took home “Best of Show” at the LA stop of the 2012 Monster Energy DUB Show Tour back in August! “Best Of Show” at the 2012 LA DUB Show Tour stop. ll of Sedrick Ellis’ dreams have come true: he was fortunate to play for one of the nation’s top college programs while at USC under Pete Carroll; he was drafted as the 7th overall draft pick in the first round in 2008 by the New Orleans Saints; and touts a Super Bowl XLIV ring from the Saints’ big win over the Indianapolis Colts and superstar quarterback Peyton Manning. But there’s still one of his dreams that hasn’t come true…owning a sports car. “I’m kind of upset they don’t make a sports car for big guys,” the 6’1” 307 lb. NFL defensive tackle admits. “I have a couple of buddies who have Ferraris, Lambos and stuff like that, but no matter how hard I try, I can’t fit into them. I always see the little guys like receivers in the parking lot riding in these fancy cars, and I’m like, ‘It’s not fair!’ To all you car makers out there, you need to make a sports car for bigger dudes like me to fit in; there’s a market out there! Right
now, I’m just waiting for someone to come out with one so I can have my dream car.” Currently, that dream car is a Lamborghini Aventador. “Man, I want one so bad,but once you reach a certain weight and height, it’s over,” he says. “I went to go test drive a Lambo at a dealership in Beverly Hills and even the sales guy was looking at me a bit funny when I tried to get myself into one. If I can’t get one while playing, I’ll wait until I’m done and drop, like, 50 pounds and see if can squeeze into one then.” But the Chino, CA native isn’t mad about it and doesn’t mind patiently waiting for that sports car given he already has a pretty impressive fleet of rides. His Mercedes-Benz S65 was his first major purchase after joining the NFL, while his 1972 Chevelle is his first old school. The 700-hp Dodge Challenger SMS 570X is his go-to car when he wants to haul ass and one of WINTER 2012 DUBMAG 169
his notable buys since it’s modified by the famed Steve Saleen. “When I found out that Steve Saleen was commissioned by Dodge, I hopped on the opportunity to get one,” he exclaims. “Man that car has it all: it’s supercharged and it really gets up and goes! It’s definitely a hot car.” Then there’s his absolute favorite car, the vintage 1984 Chevy El Camino that he’s had since college. The nostalgic car holds a lot of fond memories for Ellis, who made it a goal to fix up once he hit the big leagues. “That car has been through a lot. It was supposed to be green, but looks gray, the right window didn’t roll down, the air conditioning didn’t work and whenever I slowed down at a light, all the electrical wiring would turn off. The fuel gauge didn’t even work and left me stranded on the freeway once while driving back home from USC. It’s a whole different car now when you see it, and it’s really cool to have witnessed that transformation. It’s a beauty now.”
As a devoted car enthusiast, Ellis knows a thing or two about making his rides hot. “All my cars are black…that’s my thing,” he notes. “I’ve always wanted a fleet of just black rides. They look tough and mean like me. I’m going to
continue that theme as I grow my collection. It’s going to be my signature style.” Besides the allblack exterior, Ellis’ rides must have a fresh set of wheels to live up to his style standards and not just any wheels either. “You just can’t throw

any rims on your cars cause it’s not going to look right,” he comments. “I’ve seen guys do this and it just throws off the entire look of their car. I’m not one to go too crazy or big with wheels either. You have to match the wheels to the style of the particular car to make it look right…that’s when you know it’s done right.” And by the looks of all his cars, Ellis definitely knows what he’s talking about. The So. Cal player actually has more dreams of diving deeper into car culture when he retires from the game. “I actually see all these commercials about how you can go back to school and learn how to build an engine from scratch and learn the ins and outs of working on cars, which is something I’d like to consider once I’m done playing ball,” he confesses. “I’d like to put together an old school from scratch using only my two hands. It’ll be a great business because there will always be car enthusiasts who want to build and rebuild their rides. Who knows, I might even have my own garage one day.” Despite planning for his retirement days, Ellis is focused on his current career as one of the league’s best defensive tackles, as we learned when we sat down with him to talk shop about his football career!
The 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Convertible is a complete rebuild and one of his favorite old schools.
His 1984 Chevy El Camino aka “The Beast” was Sedrick’s car while at USC. When he made it to the NFL he had it completely restored. It was brought to the DUB Garage to have the interior redone and install a stealth Sony stereo system.

Was it a huge adjustment playing college football to playing in the NFL? Getting used to the NFL is all about adjusting to the speed of everything. The speed of learning the plays is accelerated and the speed of going up against the best athletes in the sport. So if I had to give any advice to college players out there, it’s just to slow the game down and take your time to learn it because once you get started in the season, ain’t nobody going to wait for you to catch up.
The 2008 Mercedes S65 AMG was Sedrick’s first thing he bought when he got his first NFL paycheck.
What was it like going to college at a school that’s known for consistently having a top-tier football program like USC and always recruiting the best players in the nation? Man, USC was stacked full of NFL talent at the time, so you always had to think you could make it to the next level. That’s the only way you’ll get there, especially going to a school like USC where there’s so much talent, you can’t expect anything less from yourself than to make it to the next level. All your teammates are pushing themselves to their limits, so it’s just something you do, too. That confidence in yourself and your skills are key. But if you made it to ’SC, then you probably already have the talent to make it to the NFL, you just have to keep your skills on par from there.
to live up to the expectations that people set for you. Either way, it’s a stressful situation. When that day came for me in 2008, I just tried to relax. My family and I rented out Dave and Buster’s in Ontario, CA to watch it and it was a great day for me. Originally, Cincinnati had the 10th pick that year and I was supposed to go there. They were the only team that brought me on a visit so I had already figured I’d be drafted there. So I’m sitting there, waiting for the 10th pick to be called and then all of a sudden, without a call or anything, New Orleans skipped ahead and got me at the 7th since they had traded with New England. It was a surprise! I didn’t even hear from them until after the pick was made, so it was kind of out of nowhere and definitely an interesting experience.
Was there a lot of pressure being in a program that had so much talent? That pressure can go either way. It can crush and ruin you or make you better; it’s just about how you take it. But there is a lot of weight on you to know that everybody expects you to do big things. A lot of the guys there took that pressure and ran with it. Since the competition was at such a high level, you just knew that you had to run with it to stay ahead.
Obviously, it worked out for you since you ended up wining a Super Bowl with the Saints the following year. What was that experience like? That was nuts, man. To have the Super Bowl in Miami…it doesn’t get any better than that. Plus we went up against one of the best teams in the league with one of the best quarterbacks, Peyton Manning. It was seriously like nothing else I’ve ever experienced. The after parties were amazing and all the love we got months after the win was unbelievable. We were just rolling that year in both defense and offense. To be able to win 13 straight games during the regular season and continue those wins in the playoffs, then go to the Super Bowl was just so unreal. It’s a unique and once in a lifetime thing that most guys don’t experience. Hopefully, I’ll get to go through that again in my career.
What was draft day for you like? It was really cool, yet so much was going on. Depending on where you’re going, you have different worries. If you’re at the bottom of the draft, you worry if you’re going to get picked, but if you’re at the top, you worry about if you’ll be able
Do you ever get caught up watching your great offensive teammates during games? Of course! When Drew Brees is getting all the quarterback records in the NFL and going up against the best linemen in the NFL, you can’t help to look up at the Jumbotron and get taken away by the guys that you play with because they are talented guys. I’m most thankful that they’re on my team because I know I wouldn’t want to play against a guy like Drew. He’s tough and can pick apart a defense any time. Since they are so good, do you ever feel they make you look bad in practice? Going up against them in practice is actually a good thing. I look at it like this: if you can do well against Drew Brees in practice, who is one of the best quarterbacks in the game and who has the best offense to back him up, then there is not much another team’s offensive can do in a game that’s going to be better than him. So it’s definitely an advantage the way I look at it. What’s the biggest accomplishment in your career thus far? There is a ton, really. Being picked 7th during the first round of the draft in 2008 was cool, winning a Super Bowl is huge and playing with the NFL’s best is always a highlight. I can’t say that I have just one in particular, but when you lump up my body of work all together, it’s a beautiful accomplishment as a whole. Any advice to young kids out there hoping to make it as a pro football player? Really, just have fun with it. I see kids now and it’s already work for them because their parents push them so hard to be the best. I didn’t see football as a job until I got to the NFL and it’s important to still have fun with the game. You can’t let yourself get burnt out. His 1972 Chevelle Convertible is completely rebuilt with a big-block 502 engine.

Candy-colored Lowriders, custom bikes, trucks and more filled the convention center, looking like a bag full of Skittles from up above. Pictures were snapping everywhere as guests took pics next to their favorite rides and music was booming everywhere, but the Boost Mobile Concert Series powered by LG stage was where it was all going down with a musical lineup that was pretty insane! Performances by Robert Charles, Drumma Boy, Menace, Vo & Elroy Ave., Crucial Mafia, Bam Rogers, N.O.4, Kia Shine and Skool Boy hyped the crowd with fresh jams. But it was the performances by French Montana, Ca$h Out, Yo Gotti and Gucci Mane that really brought the heat for the day! Guests packed the Monster Energy Zone that featured thirst-quenching flavors and eyepopping beauties as the Monster Energy girls posed with fans for pics. All the kids made sure to take an opportunity to try to win one of the many DUB Garage Toys that were being given out at the show, and parents made sure to stop by the TIS and Dropstars Wheels showcase to check out the latest wheel designs! The Pirelli Lounge displayed their latest tires, and the Kawasaki booth’s bike collection stole the attention of bike enthusiasts wanting to scope out the Vulcan Vaquero and ZX-10.
