EDITOR’S NOTE ISSUE 82
A
new year… a fresh 12 months to start new projects, learn from the past, and live life to its fullest. Luckily, the world didn’t end in a fiery cataclysm, so we’re ringing in 2013 with inspiring stories that will make you want to finally buy that dream ride, fix up the old school that’s been waiting in the garage, or simply entertain you with some automotive eye candy. NFL stars DeSean Jackson of the Philadelphia Eagles and Charles Johnson from the Carolina Panthers both get a fresh start for the upcoming 2013-2014 NFL season. They’re both working hard in the offseason, trying to improve their game to help their teams make it to the Super Bowl, while thoroughly enjoying their garage. DeSean Jackson will be riding around in his Bentley GT customized by the DUB Garage team, while Charles Johnson will probably be taking his Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder out for occasional speed limit violations. “Jersey Shore” might be over, but DJ Pauly D isn’t letting that get him down, as his career in music is just getting started. Now living in Las Vegas, he’s partying it up as the resident DJ at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino’s Vanity Nightclub. And he has some new Kawasaki sport bikes to keep him occupied in the isolated desert town. B.o.B will soon be switching it up musically for fans as he finishes new songs for his next release, which he says will definitely be different from his previous material. He understands that it might upset some fans, but he’s willing to take that chance to evolve as an artist. When he’s not slaving in the studio, he’ll be driving about ATL in his blackedout Gallardo Spyder. The House of Hotrods and Customs in Texas pride themselves by injecting new life into beat-down old hotrods and classics. Their work on three distinct Chevy Bel Airs demonstrates the caliber of work and craftsmanship that they put into their builds. Life was intended to be enjoyed, and DUB is tailor-made for those that think obsessing over cars is an integral part of that enjoyment. Enjoy 2013 and, don’t forget to take an issue of DUB with you along for the ride!

BEST DRUMMER EVER
WHEN THE SAINT GOES RIDING IN
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Travis cover! The Famous x DUB logo looks freakin’ sick! I’ve been a Travis fan since he first started out in the music biz with The Aquabats! He’s seriously a talented and inspirational person to me, and it’s crazy that he’s still so humble about his massive success. He needs to start another DJ/ drummer collabo soon, because his TRV$DJ-AM stint was my fave thus far. But, really, everything he’s done has resulted in good music. His taste in cars is awesome! I got into old school Cadillacs because of him.
You have to admire Saints’ Sedrick Ellis for keeping his 1984 Chevy El Camino after his big payday. You’d think that he’d get rid of his collegedays beater, but it says a lot about his personality and his character (as well as how much he loves cars) for him to invest time and money in restoring it. I think I’d be one of those guys if I was ever to make big bucks.
Jessica V. Sacramento, CA Wssup guys! Caught the episode of “The DUB Magazine Project” with Travis Barker on it yesterday. That was a great feature you did on him...I didn’t know that he didn’t fly anymore and just takes his tour bus to all his gigs across the country. Seems like a real down-to-earth dude. You should’ve featured more of his cars though. I wanted to see more of his Rivi and that red Chevy truck!
Marvin P. Via email When you’re a car lover, you just don’t throw away a ride because it’s old; you make it better. When cars hold special sentimental value, its worth the money, time and effort to fixing them up because of all the great memories that come back when you’re driving around. For Sedrick Ellis, that El Camino was an extension of his character before he went pro, which is probably what helps keep him humble and, at the same time, motivates him to play better.
DUB LATINO
Marquis R. Chicago Heights, IL Jessica / Marquis, Travis does have a very successful tenure within the music industry, but is just a successful person in general. It’s probably because he is so down-toearth still, which really goes a long way in the industry he’s in. He’s a genuine guy with loads of talent and our features in the magazine and in “The DUB Magazine Project” are only glimpses into his life. He’s always one of our favorite celebs to check up on and feature!
UFC’S BANTAMWEIGHT BEST Man, I was so disappointed that Dominck Cruz couldn’t get into the Octagon with Urijah Faber again because of his torn ACL. And it sucks even more to hear that he won’t be fighting again soon because of setbacks in his recovery. I thought he was the better coach on “The Ultimate Fighter: Live” than Faber! Looking forward to seeing him get back into the cage. Thanks for featuring him with his GT-R...that thing is a beast! Randy A. El Paso, TX Yeah, we’re pretty bummed, too, that Dominck’s recovery isn’t going too well. But he’s a super driven individual and will definitely be back in the Octagon to defend/retain his bantamweight belt! We’re sending him nothing but our best wishes and glad he has such awesome DUB fans!
I have to admit, I was a bit hesitant to watch your new “DUB Latino” series ’cause I’m not a native Spanish speaker, but was impressed with how well it came out! It was really entertaining! Even though I couldn’t fully understand everything that was being said (they speak REALLY fast) or knew a lot of the talent, I watched almost every episode. Plus the co-host Magda Angel is freakin hot!!! When are you gonna do a feature with her on your cover!?!?! EdgarGZ12 Via email Thanks for giving “DUB Latino” a chance! We really wanted to expose our Spanish-speaking fans to the DUB culture, just like how we did with our MTV show and got nothing but great feedback on the show thus far. We can’t wait until next season and, yes, Magda is “freakin hot” and a very cool person, as well! And your suggestion is noted! Be on the lookout for it.

GALPIN AUTO SPORTS ANNOUNCES GTR-1 SUPERCAR AT 2012 LA AUTO SHOW WWW.GALPINAUTOSPORTS.COM
Galpin Auto Sports (GAS) announced its upcoming GTR-1 Supercar at the 2012 LA Auto Show. GAS President Beau Boeckmann announced that they’re currently building a prototype of what the Ford GT would have looked like if Ford had continued production of the legendary supercar. The supercar is being developed with the spirit of Carroll Shelby in mind, further making existing production
cars faster and even higher performance. The GTR-1 will be based off of Ford’s popular GT that was built from 2005 – 2006. The specially developed supercar will have more than 1,000 horsepower and will be available with the choice of handmade aluminum or carbon fiber coachwork, upgraded drivetrain and suspension modifications and a bespoke interior tailored to the customer’s specifications.
2013 PIRELLI CALENDAR SHOOT BY STEVE CURRY
WWW. PIRELLICAL.COM/2013 | WWW.STEVEMCCURRY.COM The 2013 Pirelli Calendar was presented in Rio de Janeiro at the “Pier Mauá”, warehouses at the old port of the “Cidade Maravilhosa” and was shot by Steve McCurry. And like any other version, this Pirelli Calendar will become a collector’s item. The 40th edition of the calendar recounts the recent social and economic transformation of Brazil. His work celebrates the beauty and colors that represent the soul of this magical South American country, which takes center stage in the Pirelli Calendar for the third time, following Patrick Demarchelier’s 2005 edition and Terry Richardson’s in 2010. The calendar alternates portraits of models and actresses with pictures of ordinary people: a young boxer working out, a fruit seller at the market, samba dancers, capoeira masters practicing their art, a woman jogging, an art teacher, a tourist at a museum, a secretary looking out a window, lovers walking together at sunset. There are 34 colorful images in the 2013 Pirelli Calendar, bound together in a calendar-book: 23 portraits of actresses and models, 9 images depicting bits and pieces of daily life, and 2 pictures entirely composed of graffiti and murals.

CADILLAC XTS “PERFORMANCE” DISPLAY WWW.CADILLAC.COM/XTS
Cadillac has added an industry-exclusive feature to its XTS that allows drivers to completely reconfigure the layout of the gauge clusters behind the steering wheel. This first all-digital gauge cluster allows drivers to choose from four layouts ranging from simplistic and minimal to ultra-informative. Controlled by an intuitive multi-directional switch on the steering wheel, the 12.3-inch LCD screen replaces traditional analog dials. Each of the four cluster layouts continually displays vehicle speed and fuel information, just like the dials of old. What’s
new is the reconfigurable display technology that enabled Cadillac designers to formulate options for both the design and type of information displayed. The result is four distinct clusters that skew to particular styles of luxury sedan drivers. The default cluster design is the “Balanced” display for those who prefer a traditional layout, while the “Performance” one is for enthusiast drivers that want information on the car itself. The “Enhanced” display is for the uber-connected driver, while “Simple” is for minimalist drivers.

I
t’s another typical weekend in Las Vegas and party goers at Vanity Nightclub inside the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino are amped up on drinks in anticipation of witnessing one of DJ Pauly D’s notorious sets. The opening DJ closes his set and Pauly D takes his place behind the turntables. Once changing of the DJ guards is done, Pauly D drops his first song and welcomes everyone to the club. The dance floor is now filled to the max with moving bodies, leaving no space between dancers as the crowd cheers for Pauly D’s set. What results is pure mayhem, as he drops nothing but club bangers that stirs up screams and fist pumps throughout the club. “I like to do what I call my ‘power set,’ where I keep banging them with hits after hits after hits,” he tells us at the shoot before the night’s gig, or what he considers “the calm before the storm.” “I get some rock in there, some hip-hop, dance and everything else you can think of.” MTV’s highly popular “Jersey Shore” wrapped its final sixth season last year, but Pauly D’s limelight is far from fading… In fact, it seems to be burning as bright as ever thanks to his skills on the turntables. “Jersey Shore” might have made him a reality TV star, but its his passion for music and DJing that has helped him become one of the world’s top DJs. The last time we spoke to the loud and rambunctious DJ, he was busy filming his MTV spin-off “The Pauly D Project” and playing shows at the Palms Hotel and Casino in Vegas. Now, the superstar personality is a resident DJ at Vanity Nightclub at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. “Only the best of the best DJ down here in Las Vegas,” he comments. “I’m most comfortable right in the club ’cause I can see everything. screaming, and I want them to remember the experience when they came to a Pauly D party, they’re gonna remember it and they’re gonna come back…and that’s the name of the game.” And despite being a bit sad about the end of “Jersey Shore,” he credits everything he has now to the opportunity to be one of the show’s housemates. “It allowed me to have this big audience to DJ in front of.” But, it also helped land him gigs touring with Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj, as well as a huge record deal on 50 Cent’s G-Note Records. “This is the most amazing thing in the world for me.” Now that he’s at Vanity, Pauly D has left the East Coast and now calls Sin City home, with a house off the strip and a dope penthouse suite at the Hard Rock, complete with a bowling alley and an amazing view of their pool (which

new custom 2013 Bentley Continental GT from the DUB Garage and his burgeoning music career. Where does your love for football begin? Since I was young, I’ve had a love for the game of football. My father and brothers were involved with football growing up and they inspired me to get involved, too. You were also heavily into baseball. What made you choose a career in football? I just had more love for the game of football than I did for baseball. I really appreciate and value the opportunity to compete at a high level every time I’m on the field. hiladelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson is a trooper and steadily maintained his position as one of the team’s key players, even after a tough injury toward the end of the season. Back in November, during a Monday night battle against the Panthers, Jackson fractured his ribs, keeping him sidelined for the remainder of the season. Considered a “deep threat” in the Eagles offense, Jackson is looking to make up for a less than satisfactory past season next year and is looking forward to making the Eagles a top contender for next year’s Super Bowl. But as he heals during the off-season, the 26-year-old NFL player isn’t just going to work on improving his on-the-field skills, as he also looks to up the ante on his car game and further develop his musical interests. We caught up with So. Cal native, All-American player while at Berkeley and two-time Pro Bowl attendee to talk about his love for the game, his 38 DUBMAG FEBRUARY 2013
What was the journey like to the pros? I’ll admit it’s a lot of fun, but it is equally just as tough. It takes a lot of hard work to make it to this level. How different is college from the pros? College is much different than the pros. I’d say the most significant differences are the speed of the game and the size of the athletes. Also, the intensity is much higher because everyone is out there to feed their families. But it was a pretty smooth transition. I came in knowing that I was going to have to work hard, and I did just that. I worked hard enough to earn a starting spot in my rookie season. You had the choice between a full ride to USC or Berkeley and waited for the deadline to choose. Why not go to such an esteemed program like USC’s? I felt that it was time for me to move away from home and face the world on my own. I think attending USC wouldn’t have really taken me out of my comfort zone. Plus I kind of liked the idea of playing against USC.

Being a So. Cal kid, from L.A. to going to school up north, what was moving to the East Coast like to play for the Eagles? The adjustment to the weather was the hardest part, but this city shows a lot of love so that makes it really easy to forget about the weather. But I do miss the California sun, and I don’t like being so far from home. I love the cheesesteaks, though! What was draft day like for you? It was really exciting. I thought I was going to go in the first round, but I slipped down to 2nd. I was still so excited to have accomplished a dream that I’ve had since I was younger. You’ve been in the league for a few years. Many say your rookie year was your best thus far. Do you think this? No, not at all. I don’t pay much attention to stats; I just got out there and work as hard as possible to help the team.

How would you define this past 2012-2013 season for you? Las year was one of the toughest for the team in a while. We’re looking to change it up next season and make it to the Super Bowl and win. What do you know you already have to work on for next year? Everything. I want my game to be stronger across the board. I don’t ever feel like a player should feel content. Once that happens, you will see that player start to fall off their game. There is always something that you can work on. So other than football, you’re concentrating on your car game. What made you want to get the Bentley? Growing up, my dad always dreamt about getting a Bentley and it was always my favorite car. I remember thinking when I was little that one day I would buy one for him. My dad passed away in 2009, so I decided I wanted to get one in memory of my pops. Why did you want to customize it even more given it’s already such a beautiful car? The Bentley is an amazing car on its own, but I
wanted to personalize it to fit my style and my personality. I knew I definitely wanted rims, a sound system, and tinted windows. Everything else I left up to the DUB Garage team. I was really impressed when I first saw it all done up. My first thought was that it was clean…crazy clean. I really like the paint job. The matte black against the gloss white looks incredible. What other cars do you have? I have a Denali, a Challenger, and a Charger. They all have custom wheels and systems, but nothing like what DUB did to my Bentley. My Bentley is definitely my favorite because it’s such a smooth ride and it makes me think of my pops. What do you have your eye on next? I’m looking to pick up a Range Rover, truck or Ferrari. But my dream garage would definitely include a Rolls-Royce Phantom, Ferrari and a Lamborghini. Besides football, you’re also working on a side project with your label Jaccpot Records. How did this happen? Growing up I loved music. I used it to focus and keep me out of trouble. When I have a passion for something, like I do with music and football, I go after it…plain and simple. What have your learned thus far? It’s definitely cut throat, that’s for sure. But the 42 DUBMAG FEBRUARY 2013

game is open right now, especially out in the West Coast. My team and I are coming out with some different swag. A different sound that can do some damage to the game ’cause we’re bringing the heat. What type of music do you want to make? Right now we are producing hip-hop. That’s where my passions lie. The key to success in the music game is to stay relevant. I’m really venturing into something I’ve never done before. But we’re making real music and talking about our lives and reality. Look out for some hot stuff real soon! Who, in your opinion, is hot right now? 2 Chainz, Meek Mill, Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy and T.I.

Will you ever leave football for music? No, football is my first love. What type of artists are you working with? I put together some talented artists that I grew up with and some I met in Philly. Giving them an opportunity to be heard through their music. They are a talented group of rappers and writers. Do you rap yourself? Yep. I’ll go ahead and say it, I’ve got nice skills. I say my sound is like an Eazy-E sound. What would you like to achieve with your music career? I’d like to have a record label that consistently produces legitimately great music.

CHARLE JOHNSON THE LEADING PANTHER WORDS: KRISTIE BERTUCCI PHOTOS: DAVID YATES | WWW.DAVIDYATESPHOTO.COM
C
arolina Panthers defensive end and team captain Charles Johnson might be nicknamed “Big Money” for his $76 million contract extension he signed in 2011, but he’s definitely not acting like it. The team leader is modest about his success and is more focused on living up to the hype of being a franchise player. Looking to lead by example so that the Panthers are a top team next season, Johnson isn’t going to be resting this off-season. Instead, he’s going to be working harder than ever to ensure his predictions about his team come true. But he won’t be all work and no play—taking time off to show his rides some love, especially his 2012 Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder LP560 and 1969 Chevy Impala convertible. And he loves both equally, explaining how they’re his all-time favorite rides. “The Lamborghini was my childhood dream car,” he admits. “I knew when I had enough money, I’d get one.” And Johnson didn’t let his large stature stand in his way of getting his dream ride. He had the seats extended in the Lambo to allow him to comfortably take it out for its weekly ride. 44 DUBMAG FEBRUARY 2013
Then there’s his custom ’69 Impala, which was sitting in his garage for a full two years before he got around to tweaking it to his specifications with the help of Ultimate Audio in South Carolina. Now it’s dressed exactly how he first imagined it when he purchased it early in his NFL career. And because he’s an old soul at heart, Johnson also has Ultimate Audio fixing up his latest old school, a 1969 Cutlass that will follow his all-black garage theme. For now, Johnson is content with what sits in his driveway, including his Mercedes-Benz S550. But if he was to get another new ride, he mentions that it would probably be a Rolls-Royce Ghost or Phantom. But at this point in his career, the Pro Bowl player is 100 percent focused on making the Panthers a serious contender! Coming off the 2012-2013 season, how would you sum it up? We didn’t do what we wanted to do this year, and it’s really been an up and down season for the Panthers. I’ve always tried to remain a consistent player this past season, but it is what it is. The
key to it all is just consistency, which is what will allow you to have a long career in the NFL. But we did finish strong and we’re all looking forward to a much better season next year. What were your goals coming into this past season, and did you live up to them? I mostly wanted to get in better shape. I really don’t get too much into goals and stuff like that because it just comes with the territory of being a better player. Being in the best shape possible is what I thought would really help last season. During the off-season, I trained in really hot places like Miami, FL. I wanted to get a good sweat during some really intense training sessions I was putting myself through. I think being in better shape allowed me to finish off the season really strong and it’s something I’m looking to continue going into the new season. As one of the top players on the team, how much pressure does this put on you each time you play? There’s pressure, but I say it’s good pressure. You
ES N
feed off of pressure like that because you want to do so well that it motivates you to be as good as you can and then some. I actually like that kind of pressure. I don’t really let it get to my head much. I go and do what I have to do. If you prepare hard and do what you got to do, you’ll do your job well with or without the pressure. You and other defensive end Greg Hardy had a great year as one of the NFL’s most productive sack tandem in the league. What’s the chemistry like between you two? Do you guys have a plan of action already detailed out before each game? I’m more reserved while Greg is more outgoing. But our plan of action isn’t something we really talk about or plan; it’s more on the fly. We practice hard during the week, and we realize that since we do this, come game day we’re prepared to go out on the field and do our job. So we take pride in knowing what we have to do. But we also have a great vibe together that allows us to click so well. We know what we got to do and we just each want to dominate for every game, so we’re always on the same page no matter what.

You’ve become a defense team leader in your tenure with the Panthers. Was this always something you wanted to be? I’ve never said it myself, but people say I’ve become a Panther’s leader. But it wasn’t something I was after. I think I lead by example and how I play out on the field. It was a role I was reluctant to really step up to at first, but accepted it because I want to do more for my team. I’ve become more helpful, vocal and more of a mentor for the rookies and new players of the team. It was amazing to be named a captain and am still adjusting to my role as a leader for the Panthers.
So what’s your leadership style to help rookies and keep morale up? Most people relate to me because I’ve been in lots of situations before so they look up to me for advice and veteran knowledge. I used to be that guy who was not applying themselves, but now I’m working hard to really become a top player all the time. And they see that I’ve developed into being a consistent player, while still always looking to better myself and my game. I’m always telling rookies and the other guys to stay focused on their skills because it makes an even better player. 46 DUBMAG FEBRUARY 2013

FEBRUARY 2013 DUBMAG 47
What’s your biggest accomplishment this past season? Being considered a leader was big for me. I always have high standards and it’s all about winning for me, so every win is an accomplishment. I like winning and until we win big like I want us to, then I’m not going to be satisfied. I’m looking to have my team take it all. But my overall accomplishment is just being able to play and doing something I love. I got this new deal and I’m trying to live up to the hype. I don’t want anyone to look at me and say how my skills don’t reflect the big contract I got. I want to prove that I’m worth every penny and that I’m the best at what I do. I want to build a legacy and will keep grinding to become remembered as a great player. Do you embrace your nickname “Big Money?” It’s all good. But I don’t really like it because it just characterizes my contract and not me as a player. I’m not just about the money. What was your first big purchase after you signed the six-year contract extension? Honesty I bought my house that I wanted and it’s been the only real big purchase since. I’m also saving a lot and waiting to see how my career pans out. You’ve been with the Panthers for the past five years. What’s the team atmosphere like? It’s been a rough ride but a good ride. I’ve seen people come and go, but the team’s vibe has always been positive. We’re still a young team and we’re grinding hard to be No. 1. I think we’ll be one of the top teams this coming season.
The 2012 Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder LP560 sits on custom-built, blacked-out, color-matched wheels and to fit comfortably, Johnson had the seats moved back.
After the tough loss to the Buccaneers back in November, you went to ranting on Twitter, which some have criticized to saying it should have been kept in the locker room. Are you always so vocal on social media? Do you care about the backlash? I don’t care about backlash and I’m going to always say what I want to. I’ve always been like that and I know you can’t always please everybody. Sometimes things need to be said, but I do agree that some stuff needs to be kept in-house. But when the coaches believe in what you say then I feel that I’m doing something

THE FRESHEST RIDES: DRIVEN
2013 FISKER KARMA
WORDS: MIKE DALY PHOTOS: COURTESY OF FISKER
T
o be perfectly frank, until recently, I just didn’t get the Fisker Karma. I was reasonably familiar, of course, with the car’s obligatory checklist of technological innovations, as well as the moral mandate of green that pervaded its design brief. A luxury-segment, gasoline generatorreinforced, electrically powered plug-in hybrid 4-door sports car with a solar-panel roof somewhat speaks for itself. And company founder and chief designer Henrik Fisker’s resume, which includes penning the BMW Z8 and the Aston Martin DB9, commands the kind of respect that ensures patience with such a tender and tenuous venture of a car company. But despite its integrity on paper, in reality, Anaheim, CA-based Fisker Automotive has shown fissures and cracks in its operations, including: losing a 2008 lawsuit to competitor Tesla, wellpublicized delays in bringing the Karma to market (including a default regarding the terms of a federally-funded loan), a litany of press releases
either denying or spinning various negative media reports (including two fires, a recall, and a scathing review from Consumer Reports) and a recently hired CEO that brings the tally to three different chief executives within the last 18 months. Additionally, Fisker somewhat routinely claims to be the first luxury electric vehicle to come to market (or something along these lines), which can be questionable given Tesla Motors was putting cars on the road at least two years before the first Karmas began taking delivery. All of which led me to wonder, despite the beauty and lofty intentions of the Karma, is the model more style than substance? Perhaps a good bit of hype undermined by the nagging constraints of reality? Then I experienced the Karma, and as it turns out, I just didn’t get what Fisker is trying to do. If you read the fine print, you realize that Fisker doesn’t claim the Karma is the first market-ready electric vehicle, but rather the first luxury EVer. What does that abbreviation mean,
exactly? Of course the “EV” stands for electric vehicle, but the little tacked-on “er” means extended range. Like the less expensive Chevy Volt, the Karma is a plug-in hybrid that primarily runs on electricity, is driven by an electric motor and can be recharged from your home. Where the “er” enters the picture is in the gasolinepowered generator that sits in the front engine compartment. Generally inactive, the 2-liter GM Ecotec engine (lifted from the Pontiac Solstice GXP) kicks in when battery charge is low to supply power to the rear-placed electric motor, or to provide boosted power for sportier driving profiles. The inline four-cylinder Ecotec solely supplies electrical energy to the rear motor, and never directly drives any transmission or axle. Fisker realizes the Karma is not a true EV, like the Nissan Leaf or the Tesla Roadster, but clarifies that it was never intended to be. As PR chief Russell Datz explained during my test drive on the winding roads of Carmel Valley, Fisker doesn’t believe the societal infrastructure will readily accommodate convenient electrical charging any time soon. In other words, Fisker could make a pure electric plug-in EV, absent of any gasoline component, but society would not build enough public charging stations to allow such a car to be truly effective as a daily-use product. This is essentially the predicament that Tesla is in, and it clarifies the relevance of the hot-button issue of all EVs: the dreaded range anxiety. After all, if there was a charging station on every other corner, who would care if a fully charged battery was good for 138 miles (like the Nissan Leaf) or 300 miles (like Tesla’s most expensive battery pack option), both of which are a bit flimsy by conventional thinking. Being that a realistic charging infrastructure isn’t expected anytime soon, though, Fisker FEBRUARY 2013 DUBMAG 53
went the route of the EVer, and it really takes experiencing the Karma in person to understand just how precisely they nailed it. From a design standpoint, appearance, ergonomics and sustainability, the Karma is a truly amazing car. Ordinarily, I prize driver’s parameters above all else in a car like handling, acceleration and braking – basically, the performance attributes that essentially define sports cars. The Karma is not that car, though it drives quite well,
and is relatively quick and sure-footed for its considerable girth of 5,300 lbs. (which is about 300 lbs. less than a Bentley Mulsanne). Fisker makes no bones that the Karma is a heavy car – too heavy to really be a pure driver’s car. But certain engineering aspects do mimic more unbridled performance machines. The singlespeed transmission, for instance, provides full torque availability at any time or speed, while the regenerative braking feature, which feeds power back into the battery by sapping momentum, resembles the kind of downshifting gear-control favored by manual transmission enthusiasts. Despite the smooth suspension and handling (which were perfected at great pains by the same folks who developed the Ford GT), outrageous torque (959 lb.-ft.), and performance-tuned Brembo brakes, the Karma’s strengths lie not in its road manners but in the little details, which brilliantly abound in green concepts. Fisker has prioritized sustainability on several ideological levels with the Karma, from the obviously tactile to the philosophically esoteric. Yes, the car runs on electricity and incorporates solar-power roof panels (said to deliver an extra 200 emission-free miles per year), thus lowering its carbon footprint, but that is somewhat of a given. Beyond that, though, the Karma features interior details like no other series-produced postwar car I’ve seen, including authentic recycled leaf inlays on a clear 54 DUBMAG FEBRUARY 2013
The interior features authentic recycled leaf inlays on a clear center-console (displaying unobstructed vision of the battery pack below), recycled Alcantara or leather upholstery manufactured using fewer hides per interior (ie. more hide from each animal for less waste), and unfinished fresh mahogany dashboard trim that is only legal because it was reclaimed from dead trees either killed in a forest fire or dredged up from the bottom of Lake Michigan.
center-console (displaying unobstructed vision of the battery pack below), recycled Alcantara or leather upholstery manufactured using fewer hides per interior (ie. more hide from each animal for less waste), and unfinished fresh mahogany dashboard trim that is only legal because it was reclaimed from dead trees either killed in a forest fire or dredged up from the bottom of Lake Michigan. Every surface urges to be touched, a rewarding and tactile experience that extends from the Burberry-wool-suit styled panel upholstery to the Alcantara-swathed, unusually designed steering wheel. When these guys set about “reinventing the wheel,” so to speak, they obviously weren’t kidding. Integrated to absolute aesthetic perfection, the various recycled elements would be impressive enough alone, until you realize that they embody what Fisker VP of global design Alexander Klatt described to me as the company’s ultimate vision
of sustainability. As Klatt explained, Fisker doesn’t merely see the Karma as a strong example of sustainability because recycled materials have been incorporated into the car, or just because it gets good gas mileage (which, at 54 mpg, is four more mpgs than a Prius, and more than twice as many mpgs as Porsche’s Panamera hybrid). The design and management team have actually undertaken to create a car so bespoke, so unique and jewel-like, that they envision it as an instant long-term collectable, in and of itself, one that will never need to be discarded. In doing this, they have created the ultimate sustainable product – an item that never has to be recycled simply because it is too nice to ever be thrown away. Sound a little nuts? Well, after driving the Karma for an all-too-brief 45 minutes (with an 18-mile jaunt at 239 mpg, no less), I came away convinced that the idea is far less crazy than it might appear in a car magazine.

hen you’re an up-and-coming rapper hailing from Compton, CA, expectations are designated to your talent. You’re no longer just a new artist; you’re following in the footsteps of other Compton legends like Eazy-E, Dr. Dre and Game. And shadowing such greats has everybody expecting you to live up to the hype of what kind of rappers the region fosters. For many, the pressure can be tough, but for Problem, it’s non-existent. “I’m not really trying to be the next Dr. Dre or Game; I’m trying to be the first Problem,” he asserts. “Their legacy is already set and their music is already great, so why would I even try to compare what I’m doing to that? I’m writing my own chapter, and hopefully one day, my name can be associated as another great rapper from Compton. But right now, I’m just being me and don’t really put that pressure on myself ’cause if I did, I’d go crazy.” But Problem’s talent has placed him on the fast track to stardom, and thanks to a highly successful 2012, his association to such Compton greats will most likely become a reality in the near future. The multi-talented producer, songwriter, engineer and rapper got his first big break thanks to Snoop back in 2008 and has already worked with other big names like Chris Brown, Pharrell, Game, E-40, Wiz Khalifa, Kurupt and many others, making for an impressive resume. But it was his hook and rapping on E-40’s club smash “Function” that really caught everybody’s attention. His “Welcome to Mollywood” mixtape secured his place as a rapper to watch out for, with its follow-up, “Welcome to Mollywood 2,” a highly anticipated release last fall. Signed to one of the hottest indie labels on the West Coast, Diamond Lane Music Group, Problem is gearing up for an even bigger 2013, with a full LP release and a worldwide following. How did you end up with Problem as your rap name? That name comes from when I used to play basketball in high school. My friends saw me one day and said there were going to be problems on the court whenever I played and they just started calling me Problem. 78 DUBMAG FEBRUARY 2013
There must be a lot of misconceptions revolving around your moniker? Yeah, people think it’s from the streets or something like that. But I’m really a cool dude and am nothing like what people usually interpret the name as being. Like when I say I’m a rapper named Problem from Compton, it’s assumed that my music is hardcore and all I rap about is being a menace or something. But I’m glad people think this ’cause they’re shocked to find out how different my music is than what they first expected. The only real problem I had with my name was that it was difficult to Google me, but now it works. I like it ’cause I can play off it when rapping...like I’m a problem to the industry. What made you decide to try rapping? I’ve always loved music, but only pursued it as a career late in my life. I actually started rapping because I knew girls liked rappers [laughs]. Girls used to come to parties and stuff and I’d freestyle for them, just playing around. But then I really started getting into the business side of things when I started to meet a lot of producers and engineers. My whole life was then surrounded with music. But I wasn’t in high school, cyphering during lunch and sh*t. So after you realized rapping could be more than just a way to impress girls, what did you do to make it your career? My cousin helped me learn how to work all the studio equipment and I taught myself all the engineering side of it. I worked hard perfecting the soundboard and mixing stuff for a year. It helped me to become a better rapper since I can do it all. Many artists only want to either write lyrics or make beats, and I can do more than that, which has really helped my skills. My first big break was a writing gig for Snoop Dogg back in 2008. After I got that fat ass check, I knew it was my calling. From there, I got to sit around and hang out with all my rap heroes like DJ Quik and Kurupt and just pick their brains on the industry. They’d all give me tips, and I got to see how they worked the industry and stuff. That whole year after working with Snoop was like attending a rap college. I got to see what it was like to be a real entertainer from legends. Why was 2012 so successful for you? That track I did with E-40, “Function,” really helped get my name out. Plus I was on five tracks for Wiz Khalifa’s “Cabin Fever 2.” I dropped my huge mixtape project, “Welcome to Mollywood” and its follow-up. I was surprised to find that fans were buzzing about it even before it dropped. Those have been big turning points for this year! What sets you apart from other artists? My name is Jason Martin, aka Problem, and I’m not trying to be anyone else, that’s the difference. I’m not trying to do what Lil Wayne or Drake are doing because I’m doing me. I’m pushing Diamond Lane Music and doing things my way. I’m doing things with my eyes straight and not looking to the side to see what everybody else is doing. I’ve got tunnel vision and that’s what makes me different in this industry today. It’s important to do what you want to do and that you have the freedom to make the music you want. I don’t’ want to be boxed into what other artists are doing because I’m not trying to be like them.

@RAPPERPROBLEM
What’s 2013 looking like for you? It’s going to be bigger than last year! I have some huge collaborations (that I can’t name right now) dropping and I’m hopefully going to release my debut album called Plan B. I already have more than 40 songs for it. I’m waiting a bit to get my fan base up to where it needs to be so that the album can be successful. This album is going to be really personal and it’s going to show fans who I really am. My mixtapes introduced them to Problem, but the album will define who Problem is. But I’m also looking to drop part three to the “Mollywood” mixtape series and even have some other mixtapes in the works. What imprint would you like to leave behind in hip-hop culture? I want Diamond Lane Music to be like a Def Jam or Interscope. I want to help build it to be a huge imprint in hip-hop and a place that innovated new musical trends that will continue on through the ages.

ister Cartoon’s collaborations keep stacking up with his most recent one being a customized 1939 Chevy Master Deluxe with handpainted murals depicting images inspired from Warner Brothers’ new Gangster Squad film, now in theaters. The film stars Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, and focuses on the 1940’s story of Mickey Cohen as he tries to take reign over Los Angeles. “I felt that my ’39 Chevy matched the movie and the automobiles used in it, and since I already had one, I mentioned to Warner Brothers how it was the perfect car to place some custom murals inspired by the movie,” Mister Cartoon describes. “I actually
got married in that car, and it already had all the Lowrider customizations done to it, so it made for the perfect canvas for the murals.” And instead of taking scenes straight from the movie, Mister Cartoon created his own interpretation of Gangster Squad for his murals, making the artwork unique. “I used pictures that Estevan [Oriol] took of the actors on the set as inspiration because I didn’t want to copy anything straight from the movie or any promotional material. I also factored in what type of murals I’d want to have on the car forever. It was cool that Warner Brothers was down for letting me do my own thing and didn’t tell me what images to use. I just sent them my FEBRUARY 2013 DUBMAG 81
sketches after watching the movie and everything was good to go.” The Gangster Squad ’39 features Candy Cobalt Blue flaked fenders, Bentley Black paint for its exterior and white gold leafing with Candy Blue accents, as well as Mister Cartoon’s movie-inspired murals. It’s slammed to the ground via custom airbags and rides on handmade 72-spoke Zenith 14-inch wire wheels. The custom interior has Aston Martin suede diamondpattern inserts, hand-woven floor mats, Japanese leather seats with a suede headliner. Rockford Fosgate provided the audio system, while custom-molded fittings were added to the dash for LCD screens. Before the film was released in theaters, SA Studios and Warner Brothers had a VIP premiere viewing and party, hosted by the movie’s director Ruben Fleischer and Mister Cartoon. The event brought out star-studded movie buffs, including
celebrity jeweler Ben Baller, actress Brooklyn Sudano, DJ Reflex, actors Jason Weaver and Keith Robinson, pro skater Theotis Beasley, NFL legend Eddie George and many more who celebrated the LA-centric gangster movie. Mister Cartoon’s customized Gangster Squad bomb made its official debut at the party that featured pin-up girls, other custompainted vintage cars, as well as inspirational art and photos from the era. It was then displayed at the 2012 LA Auto Show before it traveled to additional locations throughout the country for screening events of Gangster Squad with Sanctiond’s Mobile Detail Unit in tow, so that the ’39 bomb was kept shiny and clean when displayed at selected theaters. And to celebrate the custom ride, Sanctiond released limited edition bottles of their Spray Detailer and Tire Glaze, featuring artwork created by Mister Cartoon for the movie. Mister Cartoon also exclusively designed a billboard for the film that was unveiled on Platinum Motorsport’s wall on the iconic Sunset Strip. During the unveiling, he painted live additions to the piece. 82 DUBMAG FEBRUARY 2013

ulti-talented artist B.o.B (born Bobby Ray Simmons, Jr.) is a musical phenomenon. Not only can he play numerous instruments (including the piano, trumpet and guitar), but also has successfully been able to create his unique sound that fuses hip-hop, R&B, rock and pop into a cornucopia of amazing music that appeals to a vast audience. One could pinpoint his moment of success when his first single, “Nothin’ on You,” hit radio airwaves, propelling the Atlanta,
where everything came from. It was that experience that sculpted me to be the artist I am today. It’s that motivation you have when you’re living in a situation you want to get out of tremendously that develops character. That brought out everything a musician would need to make it in this industry.” And like the determined person he is, it was in sixth grade that B.o.B decided he wanted to pursue a music career. With the help and support from his parents, he started
“IT’S THAT MOTIVATION YOU HAVE WHEN YOU’RE LIVING IN A SITUATION YOU WANT TO GET OUT OF TREMENDOUSLY THAT DEVELOPS CHARACTER. THAT BROUGHT OUT EVERYTHING A MUSICIAN WOULD NEED TO MAKE IT IN THIS INDUSTRY.” GA musician into global fame with millions of adoring fans, but he thinks otherwise. “I used to sell candy in high school and there was a point where I was making more money than what my dad was bringing home from work,” he details. “I thought to myself, ‘Damn, if I could do that, then I can make anything else I wanted happen.’ That’s when I realized I was successful. Everything else just happened to follow because of that moment.” But even before he began to hustle candy in his teens, B.o.B’s dedication and motivation developed as a child, growing up in an unfinished home that his father was building after getting evicted from the family’s prior residence. “There were no exterior walls, doors or windows…basically, we were camping for a couple of years before it was ultimately finished,” he vividly recalls. “It was definitely an interesting place to be in as a kid, but that’s 86 DUBMAG FEBRUARY 2013
making beats. He later sold his first beat to former Slip-n-Slide artist Citti, which he says further peaked his interest in music. Like every up-and-coming artist, B.o.B worked the independent scene, doing free mixtapes, promoting his work online on sites like MySpace (“back when it was jumping,” he notes) and doing any and all gigs he could to gain exposure. He even played at one of the DUB Show Tour stops back in 2007 during his underground days. But all his hustle and grind finally paid off in 2008. Gracing covers of XXL and Vibe, with subtitles identifying him as the next promising artist to look out for. The debut of his first album in 2010, The Adventures of Bobby Ray, was the pivotal point and biggest accomplishment (to date) of his life. “That’s when the world discovered who I was, and it was such an incredible and indescribable feeling. It obviously changed my life

in a major way, and nothing I have now would be possible without that album. It opened the doorway for me to be able to afford all of my eccentric hobbies like collecting guitars, hats and guns, and allowed me the type of income to drive around in my Lamborghini.” The black Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder was B.o.B’s first purchase after he dropped his highly anticipated second studio album, Strange Clouds, in early 2012. “I wasn’t gonna go out and blow all this cash on a huge watch or expensive jewelry as other rappers tend to do and got this Lambo instead. I told myself, ‘Why not? You’ve worked hard for a year recording your album.’ So I figured I’d treat myself to a fine ride.” The matte black Gallardo Spyder is B.o.B’s “beast,” and he confesses that he was a bit nervous when he first drove it because he didn’t’ want to mess it up. Currently opting for speed and style or comfort, he wanted his Lambo to be both sleek and stylish, so he added a set of color-matched wheels, smoked-out the taillights, and had

a custom audio system installed by Butler Tire. “It’s one of those cars that you put the pedal down and it blows,” he laughs. “There’s absolutely no delay and as soon as you press the gas pedal, you’re off!” He adds that the fastest he’s gone is 130 mph, but wouldn’t mind increasing that number on the right highway. Besides his Gallardo Spyder, B.o.B also has a Lincoln Navigator (also blacked-out) that he uses to get around town or hit up the ATL’s prominent Tree Sound Studios—one of his favorite places. The studio has it all, from recording booths to a rock climbing wall, arcade games and even a pool table, making it his second home. “Tree Sound has this zentype of feel to it,” he describes. “It definitely brings out my hippie side. But there’s this special essence to the place that really makes me comfortable and allows my creativity to just flow.” Currently working on his next album, B.o.B has been spending a lot of time at Tree Sound Studios, banging out new music that his fans are already craving. In a different “zone” than previous projects, he’s looking to really open up on this upcoming release. “I’m not afraid to talk about what I like doing and want to really change things up a bit. Artists sometimes feel pressure to be the same person their whole career, and I’m not like that. I am not the same person I was two years ago and in two years, I’m not going to be the same person I’m right now, so why should my music?” He’s also aware that in the process, he might turn off some current B.o.B fans who like his previous tunes, but is looking forward to diversifying his fan base with those who will appreciate his new music. “But the main thing that will never change is that I will approach my music with honesty and the best intentions to make it as good as possible,” he adds. “If it’s not good and I’m not jamming to it, then it won’t be released.” Although he won’t reveal any definite details about new tracks, he does admit that he’s bringing back more “rawness” to whatever he does next, similar to what was heard during his mixtape days. “I’m really getting back to my comfort

zone and my element of that hunger I had when I was just coming up. As an artist, you try to stay that hungry throughout your career. It’s hard because you work so much so you don’t have to go back to the days when you were struggling, but at the same time you want to have that hungry passion when you were going through those difficult times. Staying motivated and not complacent is what it’s really about.” With that mindset, B.o.B looks to soon expand his talents and enter Hollywood, a goal he already knows isn’t going to come easy. “The thing that makes life interesting is challenging yourself to do different things. I can’t act, but just the thought of pursuing that goal and accomplishing it is so thrilling for me. It’s how I’ve approached everything else and look at me now.”

ouse of Hotrods and Classics is a car enthusiast’s own personal haven, as a shop that makes any car creation dream a reality. Based out of Mansfield, TX (a suburb of Fort Worth), the one-stop shop will help you create the hotrod, classic or custom car of your dreams…just as long as you have the funds to back those dreams up. The shop actually started as a venture for the owner’s personal creations after several disappointing experiences at other shops in the area. Taking matters into his own hands, House of Hotrods and Classics began with a few hired hands working on all the owner’s cars before word spread like wildfire about the quality and work that the personal shop was pushing out. Soon, the shop was open to the public. Now it’s grown to be one of the most reputable one-stop shops in the country, with skilled artisans, master mechanics and master craftsman that do it all. The three custom hotrod Chevy Bel Airs are just a glimpse into the type of work that House of Hotrods and Classics does. According to Assistant General Manager Joey Dello Russo, the Bel Air is an iconic hotrod ride, which is why the blue ’57 and black ’55 were chosen as personal customization cars that they showcase
at various car shows across the nation. The red ’55, nicknamed the “Fast Lane,” is actually a customer’s who requested that the shop spare no expense at both finding and fixing up his childhood dream car. Since the customer didn’t have his desired car, Dello Russo went out and found one to his exact specifications. The owner then gave Dello Russo free reign on the modifications. “It was literally sitting out in a field,” Dello Russo explains. “The customer didn’t have the car and didn’t know where to find one. He just came in with a dream and a check book, basically, and left the rest up to us.” The black ’55 Bel Air show car was built to be a hardcore muscle car with nothing but performance, while the blue ’57 was made to be more the luxurious of the two. “If both of those had a child, it would be the red ’55,” Dello Russo comments. “It has all the luxurious amenities you can place in a car, while under the hood is pure muscle. It’s just a sick hotrod. I drove it, and it literally took my breath away.” But the shop doesn’t just specialize in hotrods, with Dello Russo stating that they do it all. “We’re motor heads, gear heads, knuckle busters who just want to work on cool cars.”

T
hings heated up in the desert when the 2012 DUB Show Tour arrived in Phoenix, AZ on Saturday, October 6th! The Phoenix Convention Center was the “it” place to be for any customized ride, bike or car enthusiast. We had an enormous turnout for DUB’s return to Phoenix, proven by never-ending lines at the box office for tickets and all the thanks we received from fans for returning to their city after a one-year hiatus. The region’s sickest rides were on display and many West Coast car clubs traveled to Phoenix to represent for their clubs. And after guests consumed the variety of vehicles on display, they were treated to loads of interactive booths and exhibits that were scattered about the convention center floor. Pirelli Tires showed off their latest tire technology, as well as their lovely models, while the Monster Energy Zone was buzzing with excitement as fans consumed their favorite Monster Energy flavors and had a chance to meet Deebo (from the movie Friday) and the beautiful Monster Energy girls. The Harley-Davidson booth was packed with showgoers checking out their latest offerings, while the Harley-Davidson “Custom Bike ShootOut” was the place to be to see all the custom Harleys and get the chance to meet with the 2012 Playboy “Playmate of the Year,” Jaclyn Swedberg. And because no DUB Show Tour stop would be complete without our amazing performances, The Boost Mobile Concert Series powered by LG provided tunes from the likes of Mahoganisoul, Bobby Brakins, Clyde Carson, DJ Quik, E-40 and Wale! Plus, we had DJs from local radio station Power 98.3 spin during performances, which kept the crowd musically satisfied throughout the entire day.

Another great highlight from the event was the Boost Mobile Community GiveBack Meet and Greet with Starlight Children’s Foundation AZ, where numerous kids got the chance to chat it up and take pics with DJ Quik and Wale. Phoenix was a great addition to our schedule and we’d like to thank all the fans, car clubs and
exhibitors who came out to the show. But nothing would have been possible without the support of our sponsors: Monster Energy, Boost Mobile, Pirelli, Harley-Davidson, UFC, Sony, Mobil 1, Kawasaki, “The DUB Magazine Project,” “DUB Latino” on mun2, TIS, Dropstars, Monster Energy Edition OffRoad Wheels, DUB Garage, MOTIV and Gear.

E
very year, Las Vegas, NV plays host to the most anticipated automotive aftermarket expo in the world, the SEMA Show, which brings together tuners, car customizers and countless enthusiasts to showcase their latest and greatest products and builds. The 2012 SEMA Show (from October 30-November 2) proved that the industry is recovering dramatically after being hit hard after the recession tightened everyone’s pockets in 2008. With attendance numbers up for both visitors and exhibitors, this year’s show at the Las Vegas Convention Center featured nothing but the hottest custom rides, most innovative aftermarket parts and, of course, the after show parties. Highlights from the show included: a slew of street-and off-road-ready Jeeps, such as LeBron James’ gold Jeep JK Wrangler built by Ultimate Auto; more than 50 customized versions of the new Scion F-RS and Subaru BRZ models; La Reina, which was crowned “Lowrider Truck of the Year”; Snoop announced his collaboration with Mister Cartoon’s Sanctiond car care line; and the debut of the 2013 DUB Edition Toyota Avalon, which was showcased with Toyota! DUB LIVE! DUB LIVE! was the final stop in the 2012 DUB Show Tour, and it was a massive outdoor arena outside of the convention center’s South Hall, which showcased a wide variety of custom cars, trucks, SUVs, exotics, Lowriders, motorcycles and more—all in DUB style, in addition to some of the coolest and most interactive booths around! The centerpieces of this year’s DUB LIVE! display were provided by Platinum Motorsport, who came out with their painted fleet, consisting of a kitted-out matte white Rolls-Royce Phantom

Before the party were the DUB Awards, presented by Mobil 1, which celebrated the industry’s best.
