The stylish body of the 2013 Avalon is breathtaking. The re-designed interior is awe-inspiring. First, there’s the roomy, whisper-quiet cabin. Inside are refinements such as IntelliTouch™controls, available heated and ventilated front seats with available heated rear seats for good measure. So inside and out, it’s like no Avalon you’ve seen before. In fact, only the name remains.

EDITOR’S NOTE ISSUE 86

E

verybody has a dream car… Some of us are even lucky enough to own our dream cars at some point. For this issue, we’re featuring many of our favorite celebs and athletes as they show off a few of their own dream-to-reality rides that inspire us to hustle hard to reach the same point. Ray Rice says he couldn’t feel more blessed to be able to afford rides like his Porsche Panamera Turbo S, Range Rover HSE and a modified Jeep Wrangler Unlimited complete with a Hemi engine upgrade. Oakland Raiders’ running back Darren McFadden is all about his old schools and made sure his childhood dream ride, a Grand National, was all dressed up to his liking thanks to the guys at the Devil’s Den Custom Body Shop. Chris Johnson, running back from the Tennessee Titans, takes a shot at reality TV as a guest judge on Spike TV’s “Ink Master,” where he has to judge contestants’ grille creations. Being the car guy that he is, Johnson shows off his 2014 Chevy Camaro that flaunts a oneof-kind orange paint job. Ben Baller is known for his extravagant jewelry pieces he creates for his celebrity friends, but he’s also known for his fly rides that will make you green with envy. But you can’t hate on the self-made hustler for his hard work and flossy car collection! Then there’s Nick Diamond, the man behind iconic streetwear brand Diamond Supply Co. who drives around L.A. in either his Diamond Blue colored Ferrari 458, 2013 Range Rover, or 2013 Mercedes-Benz S-Class. He also spills on the latest and greatest collabs his clothing line has in the works. And for all of us regular Joes out there wishing we had enough cash to drive our own dream cars, Mario, aka Sin, from Nokturnal Car Club is an inspiration. Thanks to years of hard work, he’s become a successful entrepreneur and has afforded himself a few of his own dream machines, including a Lamborghini Aventador, Nissan GT-R, Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale, 2013 Ducati 1199 Panigale S, Cadillac CTS-V Hennessey Edition and Audi A7. And when you finally do get your dream ride, you’ll want to take it to the guys at RDB LA to dress it up for you since they’re one of the nation’s premier shops. Not only will they customize any luxury car, but they’re not afraid to modify even the rarest of exotics, making them experts at what they do. We’ve even included a Road Rally guide just in case you’d like to enter your dream ride in an open-road adventure made for exotics and more! We’re hoping this issue inspires you to one day have your own dream ride sittin’ pretty in your garage! Enjoy Issue 86!

LUSCIOUS LADIES & BEAUTIFUL BEL AIRS

READER FEEDBACK

Beautiful cars like those Bel Airs that were featured in Issue 85 always look good on their own, but when you add smoking hot ladies next to them, it makes them look that much better! Suzanne Stokes and Jessica Burciaga looked mighty fine in their spreads. I actually skipped the car stories and went straight to their features! But I must say that Jessica is my favorite ever since I first came across her from her import modeling days. Mickey H. Via email

Tim Miller of Surf City Garage has my dad’s dream collection! Once I read it, I had to show it to my dad who was awestruck by all the vintage rides that were in pristine condition. Like Miller, my dad has been a car guy all his life, something that he passed down to me. While I’m more into newer cars, I can still appreciate all those classics. We don’t live far from Huntington Beach so we immediately booked a private tour of the museum, which really made my dad’s day. Thanks for a great feature! Benji S. Anaheim, CA Many admire Tim Miller’s collection of more than 100 vintage muscle cars, including us! With so much eye-candy in his Huntington Beach facility, it’s pretty hard to pick out a favorite. Touring his classic ride museum is like going back in time to a nostalgic era and we’re glad you and your dad got to experience it together! Be on the lookout for more Collector features in upcoming issues.

BACK 2 LIFE I’m a big Sean Kingston fan and was wondering what he’s been up to since his accident. Glad he’s back in action with new music since I can’t get enough of his latest single with Wiz Khalifa and Chris Brown! I got his new album the day it came out and it’s currently in heavy rotation in my ride. Besides his music, I’m digging his impressive fleet of rides and wouldn’t mind having that Mulsanne in my driveway. Florida4life Via Email We’re all glad that Kingston is back in the saddle doing what he (and fans) love, too! The music game would have lost a talented artist if he didn’t persevere through his horrible accident to come back and provide us with some great tunes. His collection is also great coast to coast, having recently added a Lamborghini Aventador to his fleet.

Ladies and cars seem to always make a great pairing, Mickey! Their photo shoots were some of our favorites for that issue, as well! Who doesn’t love to look at beautiful women posing next to stunning classics? But besides their beauty, both ladies have great personalities, making them the ultimate package for any lucky guy out there.

PARTYING AOKI STYLE Last time I was in Vegas, I partied at Aoki’s Neon Future nightclub experience inside the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino’s newest Hakkasan club and it was one of the best nights I’ve ever had in Sin City! He sure knows how to throw a great party because I’ve seen him many times before and it was nothing like I’ve ever experienced. It’s crazy to read how he’s actually a mellow guy in real life because his stage persona is so over the top. I would definitely be one of the partygoers who drive out to hear him spin from his Scion FR-S… Here’s hoping he actually goes through with what he said about throwing an impromptu party in his customized ride! Sean X. We can just imagine all the fun you had experiencing Aoki’s Neon Future nightclub, Sean (and we’re pretty jealous since we are huge Aoki fans). Next time we’re in Vegas, we’ll have to schedule it during one of his residency nights for sure. We were also pretty shocked to find out that he’s not usually as pumped up in real life as he is when he’s performing, but he’s still an awesome dude to hang out with, as we figured out during the day’s shoot. Knowing him, his statement about throwing a party in the desert somewhere from his FR-S is probably true, so make sure to keep updated on all his adventures on his Instagram feed!

DUB AUTONEWSWIRE AUTOMOTIVE NEWS

BUY A FORD FOCUS ST OR FIESTA ST, GET FREE RACE TRAINING The hot hatch competition is pretty intense these days – the Subaru WRX, VW Golf R and Ford Focus ST. There are plenty of sub-$30K little cars that will burn their way around a track and still carry a Craigslist pickup with the seats folded down. For buyers, having the fastest 0-60 mph time in a magazine or the best record in rallying might sound like an advantage on paper, but in the life of the average buyer, it doesn’t mean much. The cars are all fun-to-drive and all relatively affordable. With the math so close, what makes the decision about which one to buy? A company upping the fun-to-drive factor in a creative way could make a huge difference. Like, say, free driving lessons at a racing school with purchase. Ford has announced plans to offer complimentary ST Octane Academy sessions to buyers of Focus ST and Fiesta ST sport compacts. The lessons will be held at the Miller Motorsports Park in Utah. The catch? You have to get yourself to Utah, and pay for your own stay. Still, the two-day driving school is free with purchase. It includes class

instruction and drive time in race-modded Focus ST and Fiesta ST cars, time on a track and an autocross course, kart racing and a tour of Ken Block’s Hoonigan Racing headquarters. Buyers can choose to purchase a third day, which would include racing time in vehicles that have nothing in common with your new hatchback — including a Mustang GT on the track and an F-150 SVT Raptor off of it. Details have yet to be announced, including how to schedule your trip, but the press release says those who’ve already bought an ST will be eligible. -Sean Tucker

GALPIN FORD GTR1 SHOWN ON PEBBLE BEACH CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE CONCEPT LAWN AND THE QUAIL: A MOTORSPORTS GATHERING Galpin Auto Sports announced its first coach built supercar, the Galpin Ford GTR1, that debuted on the Monterey peninsula during a week of automotive festivities highlighted by an unveiling at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering and displayed on the esteemed concept lawn of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Continuing Galpin’s 60-year legacy of customizing vehicles, the GTR1 is based on the Ford GT as an interpretation of what the GT may have looked and performed like had it continued its evolution. The GTR1 boasts a power plant capable of an estimated 1,024 hp and 739 lb.-ft. of torque, generated from a twin turbocharged 5.4L V8 engine that is mechanically capable of speeds in excess of 225 mph – making it a truly modern and bold American mid-engine supercar. Designed by Galpin Auto Sports, the hand-crafted all-aluminum body was widened five inches compared to the Ford GT, and constructed by renowned concept car builder Metalcrafters. It features 20-inch forged aluminum knock-off wheels, Pirelli P-Zero tires, six-piston brakes with full

carbon rotors, jeweled headlamps and tail lamps and carbon fiber accents. The interior features a machined aluminum instrument cluster, a McIntosh sound system, and luxurious hand fabricated leather trimmed seats, dash, door panels and headliner. The Galpin Ford GTR1 will be extremely limited in production, with a choice of aluminum or carbon fiber bodies.

BMW REVIVING 8 SERIES? BMW released a web retrospective on the 8-Series that was sold from 1989 until 1999. The 8 was both BMW’s highest-performance car and its most luxurious for a decade. It was a unique kind of high-speed, high-class, no apologies flagship, and they haven’t attempted anything like it in nearly fifteen years. Oh, sure, we’ve got the high-performance 6-series, but it stops a step below the ultra-performance niche that the old 8 filled for a decade. And we’ve got the 7-series, which can outrun most sports cars and out-corner a storm trooper’s speeder bike, but it hides that performance behind the facade of a CEO’s handmade suit, and has a backseat that could host birthday parties. The 8 gave you no illusions. It looked like sex and drove like it, complete with a snarling V12 and a smooth-as-massage-oil six-speed stick. Munich hasn’t tried anything like it since they shut it down. So the retrospective was an odd seed to plant, if they have nothing in the works. But a few months back, at the sort of car show reserved for the ultrarich and noted only by obsessed people like us (the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este held at Italy’s Lake Como), BMW and Italian design house Pininfarina (hired guns of the design world known for their work for every supercar manufacturer ever, they designed two-thirds of the cars on posters in your childhood) showed up with something they called the Gran Lusso Coupe. It was…well…almost a modern 8-Series, when you look at it. Long hood hiding 12 cylinders, pillar-less windows and two doors. And the look? If you 20 DUBMAG SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

mated BMW’s current design language with an alien cruise missile and stirred in an overflowing cup of sex appeal, you might get this thing — all sharp edges, aggressive stance and 21-inch wheels. Inside, it was even more absurd, with Foglizzo leather in deep brown and deeper black, deep pile carpets, a patterned virgin wool headliner and kauri wood from New Zealand that’s over 48,000 years old. In other words, it’d be the most luxurious thing in the Bimmer line, if they built it. And the fastest. And they just sent out a reminder that they’ve done this once before. Are they building it? There’s no guarantee, and it could be years off if so… but it would surely be odd to roll this thing out, send the press a reminder about the old 8-Series, and then pack up your bags and go. -Sean Tucker

“INK MASTER” FOR A DAY WORDS: RAMON GONZALES PHOTOS: ANDREW BREIG

T

he artistic parallels between automobiles and tattoos might not ring immediately clear for most, but for the producers of Spike TV’s “Ink Master,” bridging the subjective gap that comes standard with all things art, certainly results in entertaining television. Among the collection of unconventional challenges producers devise weekly to find the cream of the tattoo crop, Season 3 of the reality competition pitted 16 hopefuls against one very difficult opponent – the car grille – for Episode 2.

Johnson has an eye for fresh grilles, adding a stylish Stut grille to his 2014 Chevy Camaro.

Tasked with finding judges for the unique challenge, show mainstays Chris Nunez and Oliver Peck have spent decades with a tattoo machine in hand, earning a reputation as respected purveyors of the culture and the history that goes with it. For this particular episode, however, producers needed to find a special guest judge that not only maintained a passion for tattoos but for car culture just the same – cue Tennessee Titans running back, Chris Johnson (aka CJ2K). On the field, the native Floridian has proved menacing with accolades that include a 2009 Offensive Player of the Year nod and NFL Rushing Title in just his second year in the league. But off the SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013 DUBMAG 41

field, CJ2K is best known for hanging around with Lil Wayne, spending extra time and attention on his car collection and being covered almost entirely with tattoos. “I actually got my first tattoo when I was in seventh grade. I got it on my leg so I could try and hide it from my mom,” Johnson confides. The evil genius within the walls of the production office corralled three very different personalities who love tattoos and cars to come to one very irrefutable conclusion - one which tattooer Chris Nunez explains very simply. “Regardless of the medium, when you expose any artist for their craftsmanship, that’s where you will see the artistry. It doesn’t matter if it’s painting someone’s head or making a grille for a car or carving a piece of wood.” While the show has welcomed professional athletes in the past two seasons as special guest judges, the experience as a judge is one that Johnson took with a grain of salt. “I’m not an expert on cars or on tattoos, I just happen to really like cars and I have a lot of tattoos. There are similarities between the two. Designing a car,

42 DUBMAG SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

designing a good tattoo, it’s an art. I definitely feel like I know what looks good, but I wouldn’t call myself an expert.” So between car grilles, NFL players, reality television and tattoos, the focus might get

lost in the shuffle. Ultimately, there is a simple objective. Texas tattoo traditionalist and “Ink Master” judge Oliver Peck spells it out. “If the contestants have a problem with painting a head or making a grille for a car, the audience gets to

see how it all correlates in the end. The challenges are all designed to trip people up when it comes time to tattoo. We don’t have any say in the challenges themselves, we are just there to judge things after the fact... It’s like the whole Karate Kid ‘wax on, wax off’ sh*t. It might not make sense at first, but everything is designed to put the contestants through the wringer.” In the way of credibility and expertise, Nunez and Peck both spend the majority of their calendar year tattooing both domestically and internationally, with Nunez heading his recently opened HandCrafted Tattoo and Art Gallery in Miami, FL. Like his television partner Oliver Peck, both have spent well over two decades tattooing. Ever the road warrior, Peck owns and operates Elm St. tattoo in the Deep Ellum section of East Dallas Texas, as well as True Tattoo right in the heart of Los Angeles. The motley crew of judges proved critical in that the personality and perspective differences guaranteed no lean toward a particular preference. As for Johnson, finding levity in having to critique contestants’ artistic work wasn’t too out of his comfort zone. “I got the chance to get better acquainted with the guys [Peck and Nunez]. It was definitely different, but at the end of the day, we all obviously have a love for tattoos and cars. It made things fun for us.” But a mere love for cars might be downplaying things for Johnson. A noted aficionado of sorts, aside from his play on the field and his tattoos, his whips always manage to function as a talking point for sports columnists. 44 DUBMAG SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

Johnson got his first tattoo when he was in the seventh grade and hasn’t stopped since.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013 DUBMAG 45

For the more cherished vehicle in his collection, Johnson opted for pure luxury. “My first Maybach is special to me. There’s not many people that have one and there’s something about a Maybach that boasts being a boss.” In contrast to his Maybach, CJ2K embraces his Southern roots and rides his Chevys high. It’s his 1973 Chevy Caprice that holds sentimental value for the running back. “Guys out on the West Coast and guys in the South love that old school, classic feel. Only we ride ’em high. Guys out on the West gotta have that Lowrider look.” Don’t get fooled, CJ2K might have a penchant for luxury, but a Southern man has something intrinsic when it comes to American muscle cars. Showcasing his own creative dexterity, Johnson customized his own 2014 Chevy Camaro inside and

out. “I knew I wanted a fast car and I wanted to be one of the first to have this Camaro,” Johnson explains. Complete with a one-of-a-kind paint job comprised of a radiant orange that is actually a combination of some six different colors, this twin turbo is unmistakable on the road. In the pursuit of entertaining reality television, success seems inevitable when opposite ends of the spectrum are forced to work together. But in this case, their similarities were greater than their differences. Indicative of just how prevalent tattoo culture has become, as Peck puts it, “tattoos aren’t just for the bikers, punks, and cons anymore.” The walks of life that might converge on the floor of a car show, might look interestingly similar to the same congregation on the floor of a tattoo convention. For these two lifetime tattooers and superstar NFL running back, the underlining fact is all about craftsmanship. Spike TV was just smart enough to bring everyone together and keep the cameras rolling.

altimore Ravens running back Ray Rice is pretty modest when it comes to his garage when compared to other NFL players’ collection. Instead of indulging in a head-turning fleet, Rice opts for a few necessities – a play car, family vehicle and his luxury ride. When he’s in a playful mood, Rice will choose his 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with a Hemi conversion to take out for a spin, which sits on 22” HRE TR45 wheels wrapped in 325/50R22 Nitto Trail Grappler tires and is dressed the vehicle in matte black. As his most stand out ride, Rice admits it’s the car the receives the most attention thanks to its stealthy matte black 3M wrapped exterior and modifications like Smittybilt XRC bumpers and side steps, Xenon fender flares, AEV hood and Warn driving lights. “The Jeep shows a lot of personality,” he says, complimenting its Hemi engine. “It has a lot of power and that’s what impresses me the most.” SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013 DUBMAG 53

owning one day. Despite being able to afford the top-of-the-line raging bull now, Rice has a plan for his dream car. “I’ve always wanted a Lamborghini,” he says. “Back then it was a Diablo, but now I want an Aventador, but even though I can afford it, I won’t get one until I’m done playing football. That will be a gift for myself. I think I can wait. It’s not really a necessity right now, and it will make a great thing to work toward.” And work is all he’s been putting in to his game since he first got interested in football when he was seven years old. Besides cars, Rice’s other big passion is going out on game day and playing hard for the Ravens. When you were just starting out in the sport, did it ever cross your mind that it would turn into your profession? Yeah, I dreamed of becoming a professional football player and soon realized that you have to live your life a certain way in order to get there. You have to do good in school and stay out of trouble. Doing that gave me a chance (together with my athletic ability). It was a hard task to do growing up but it was all worth it. Being the family man that he is, Rice always picks his 2014 Range Rover HSE Supercharged when he’s traveling with his daughter since it provides incar entertainment – something all dads know the importance of. “It’s basically her car,” he laughs. “It’s great for going on trips because it keeps her quiet.” But Range Rovers hold a bigger sentimental value for Rice given it was the first luxury vehicle he bought for himself when he started in the league back in 2008. “Since it was one of my first big purchases, I always want to keep a Range Rover within the family.” To provide it with a better ride, Rice fitted a set of 285/35R24 Pirelli Scorpion tires that protect his 24” HRE G102 rims. On special occasions, Rice’s Porsche Panamera Turbo S is his car of choice, admitting that it exudes the perfect balance of performance and luxury with its 22” HRE S101 wheels wrapped in 265/30R22 front and 315/20R22 rear Pirelli tires. He also added a full Fabspeed exhaust system to the Panamera. “It’s an all-around great car,” he confesses. “It’s a family vehicle, but with performance. I can drive it leisurely or take it up a notch and really drive fast when I choose to. The handling is great on it and it’s a car that I know is safe for my fiancee to drive and for me to really push its power.” For Rice, power is an important feature when it comes to cars, opting for more horsepower whenever possible - a reason why his Jeep sports a Hemi, why his Range Rover is the Supercharged version and his Panamera is a Turbo S. “I like the feeling of being on the road and having a car that performs well in different situations. I live on the East Coast and you get a lot of snow, so you have to be able to have a car for different weather conditions out here.” Besides having enough power, Rice likes all his vehicle to be fitted with a set of performance wheels, particularly HRE Wheels. “HRE is just different,” he says. “They offer luxury and performance in one package. They are one of the best out there and they have a long history in the wheel game, so when you put them on your car, they fit well. They’re my top wheel brand and I put them on all my rides.” To help customize his fleet, Rice went to Dave Barron at No Limit Inc. in Baltimore, MD, who helped make sure Rice got the perfect set of HRE Wheels for all his cars. Although Rice is quite content with what his garage boasts these days, he definitely has his eye on a Camaro ZL1, which he hopes to get in the very near feature. But it’s the Lamborghini Aventador that he really dreams of 54 DUBMAG SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

How would you describe yourself as a player while at Rutgers? I went in and played as a true freshmen and ended up being an All American. I made a good name for myself and continued on for the next two years on a straight path. Once I was a junior, I realized I had achieved all my goals and decided to declare myself eligible for the NFL draft and ended up getting drafted in the second round by the Ravens in 2008. The hardest part about college football is that you’re coming from high school and have to really learn how to manage your time wisely. You have practice all the time then you had to go and study for school, while making time to fit in other things to have a regular life. It was hard to balance it all without getting into trouble.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013 DUBMAG 55

What was that moment like when you were drafted by the Ravens? I was thinking about my mom and how far we made it in life. I always wanted to be able to tell her at one point in life that we were going to be set. That was one of the moments I knew that I was financially going to be able to do things for her that I wasn’t able to do before. It means a lot to me since she was the one who raised me and helped keep me on the right path to get to where I’m at now. How’s college different from the NFL? Both are totally different. With the NFL, you have more time on your hands because you’re not doing school work, but you still have to balance out your time by taking good care of your body for a longer season. A season in the NFL can go up to 24 games if you make it to the playoffs, while in college it’s only like 13 games. What’s your biggest achievement in the NFL thus far? Winning the 2013 Super Bowl last year and making it to three Pro Bowls. I’ve been told so much in my NFL career that I couldn’t make it as a player, but look at me now, going into my sixth year and making it to three Pro Bowls. No one can take that away from me. I made sure to go out there and make the plays and that feels good to be able to shut people up. I was told I The 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited was given a Hemi engine and was lifted 3”. wasn’t big enough or that I wouldn’t last throughout an entire season, but I continued to work hard day in and day out. I love when people talk about me or tell me what I can’t do because for me, it’s nothing. It allows me to prove myself to them that they’re wrong. What do you predict for this upcoming season for yourself and your team? For myself, my personal goal is to make another Pro Bowl and back to another Super Bowl. That being said, I just want to go out there as a team and show that we are still contenders even with all the people we lost this year. We’re going to go out there and give it our best shot. What did you feel you had to work on or improve from last season? I worked on getting faster, catching the ball and blocking. Those are things you can actually work on and train for in the off-season, even though everybody else usually works on just strength. I like to come in to each season feeling my best and I feel this year I’m coming in really strong and ready to roll. I’m out to take care of myself and think I’m reaching my max point right now in my professional career. What have you learned over the years after five years in the NFL? As a veteran, I learned to follow the right people. I follow the top guys and look at how and why they are so successful and then like to mold myself after them. Ray Lewis has been a big influence to me. He’s more than just a football player; he was like a big brother and a father figure to me. Now that he’s gone, I’m going to take what I learned from him and apply it to myself and the team. I’m not a guy to speak up everyday, but I will when it’s important. He used to always ask, “What will your legacy be?” and now that’s the question I have to figure out.

outhern car culture is known for its appreciation of old school rides, something that Oakland Raiders’ running back Darren McFadden is all too familiar with. Born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, the 2008 NFL 1st Round pick might have some noteworthy new schools like his 2008 Bentley GT Speed and 2010 BMW 750i, but it’s his old schools that he’s most proud of. “I’m really an old school type of guy when it comes to cars. There’s just something nostalgic about them,” he says. “You can put your own twist on your old school and do whatever you want to it to really make it personal and reflect your identity.” His current collection boasts a ’71 Cutlass, ’96 Impala, ’72 Chevy Side Step pick up, ’76 Buick Centurion and ’72 Chevy Seaside, having just added his latest – a ’86 Buick Grand National that’s been modified by the team over at Oakland’s Devil’s Den Custom Body Shop. “A friend introduced me to them and after I saw their work, I knew it was the right place to

take my car,” he says. “I knew I wanted a new black paint job with red rally stripes, interior, audio upgrade and the motor reworked, but really let them help guide me with the customizations.” It was Nate Jaramillo of Devil’s Den Custom Body Shop who suggested doing a ’80s style single stripe down the driver’s side incorporating the Turbo 6 on the hood, as well as smaller ones above the door handles to bring the whole idea together. When it first entered the shop, the motor ran a little rough and the shop upgraded it to a T61 turbo and added a new throttle body with 50PSI injectors, in addition to a new fuel pump, polished aluminum intercooler, billet aluminum pulleys, polished 3” down pipe and flow pipe. “I’m a performance type of guy and like fast cars. There’s something about getting into a car and hitting the gas and just hitting the road - it blows your mind. Fixing up the engine of my old schools was at the top of my customization list, along with interior and sound.” To round out SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013 DUBMAG 67

exterior modifications, McFadden had already purchased 22” Asanti wheels, but the guys at Devil’s Den added the same red as the stripe for the Tubro 6 in the center of the wheels. The interior is fitted with Ferrari red leather with perforated leather down the center of the seats to give a sporty look. To break up the color contrast the shop added black stitching. There’s red suede on the headliner and red carpet to match. To finish off the interior, they added the Turbo 6 logos on both driver and passenger seat headrests. To really top things off, they added a feature on the shifter plate of a small Turbo 6 that Darren autographed. McFadden left the audio up to Juan Vasquez, who installed a set of Pioneer Pro Series 3.5” 250W bullet tweeters in the dashboard, along with a

arley-Davidson enthusiast Joe Ochoa and his brother Bobby had big plans before Bobby fell ill in 2001 after being diagnosed with cancer. They dreamed of getting matching Harleys, fixing them up and taking them on the open road as they embarked on weekend excursions. When his brother passed away in 2002, Ochoa knew he had to make good on that promise and decided to create a tribute bike to his Bobby using a 2003 Harley-Davidson Softtail. After riding it stock for about a year, Ochoa finally saved enough money to dress it up in 2005 and began working on what would become the award-winning “La Otra” bike (translated to “the other” in Spanish, with Ochoa referring to it as his “other woman”). “I would see other Harleys at shows and stuff and knew mine had to be completely different from all the rest,” he says. “First, I started picking out colors and went with blue and silver since those are the colors of my favorite football team, the Dallas Cowboys.” Once the color scheme was decided on, Ochoa allowed builders Road Dog Customs free reign on the rest, providing them with minimum requirements like a stretched tank and fender and an eye-catching paint job. And like most enthusiasts, he knew the bike needed more flair after

it was complete in 2007 and opted for a second revamp, but this time choosing to add intricate engravings all over the bike done by Carlos at Salas Engraving and some pinstriping and silver leafing done by Mike “Draggin Lines” Lamberson. “The engraving is my favorite part about the bike,” he comments. “It’s that paisley pattern usually found on handkerchiefs. Nowadays, everybody is engraving their bikes, but back then, I never saw a single bike with that same pattern, and that really took the bike over the edge when I started to enter it in shows in 2008. It’s so detailed that everybody compliments me on it.” Besides the engraving, Ochoa’s other favorite piece on his bike is the mural of his brother on

the rear, which allows him to take Bobby out on any two-wheeled adventures – just one of the reasons why he made sure it wasn’t purely a show bike. “I bought the bike with the intentions of riding it and that’s what I do,” he explains, adding that it’s his ride of choice on the weekend. “I’ll even ride it to shows. A lot of people tell me that they like the bike even more because I

actually ride it since a lot of guys out there never really ride their show bikes.” Still cruising the show circuit today, Ochoa plans to totally redo it early next year by changing its color and adding a few more modifications to the already impressive Harley. “I’m going to go with a different color of blue and diamondcutting the levers, as well changing out the gas

tank and fenders. I don’t want to do too much because I don’t really want to go over the top or too crazy with the build. I want to keep it classy.” And even though he may get plenty of offers to sell the bike, Ochoa never plans to part with La Otra because of its sentimental value. “It’s something that will always remind me of Bobby. I could never get rid of it.”

MB&F HOROLOGICAL HM5 ON THE ROAD AGAIN WWW.MBANDF.COM |

FACEBOOK.COM/MBANDF

@MBANDF

At first, the HM5 On The Road Again watch looks as if it has a somewhat simple design, but at closer inspection, you’ll notice that it’s a rather complicated timepiece. Its hour and minute displays are bi-directional, jumping hours with indications inversed reflected 90° to the vertical and magnified 20%. It takes styling cues from futuristic-looking icons of the ’70s like the Lamborghini Miura, one of the first supercars with a futuristic design. Like the Miura, the HM5 has slits on the rear-side of the watch that open and close using a small lever on its side that are designed to open and close to allow light in. Once light enters, it can charge the SuperLumiNova on the discs that tell time. The entire case is shaped like a wedge, and the initial limited edition version of the watch will be produced in zirconium. At about 49mm wide, the wedge watch isn’t very small, which is why it was designed to allow someone to read the time easily while not removing their hands from a steering wheel. Inside of the timepiece is a movement designed by JeanFrançois Mojon and Vincent Boucard of Chronode, with automatic movement built on a gear train from a Sowind (Girard-Perregaux) movement (as is the case with many other MB&F watches) and then developed specially for the HM5’s design. It’s limited to just 65 pieces and has a price tag of about $63,000.

HUBLOT MP-05 “LAFERRARI” LUXURY TIMEPIECE WWW.HUBLOT.COM | @HUBLOT

FACEBOOK.COM/HUBLOT

The 2014 LaFerrari is an amazing supercar that features stunning design cues and impressive performance specs, which translates over to the Hublot MP-05 “LaFerrari” wristwatch. Designed in parallel with the actual car, it features 637 components for movement, a Tourbillon and 11 barrels arranged in a line similar to a spinal column (which work together to keep the watch turning for up to seven weeks at a time). Reminiscent of the LaFerrari’s outline is a complex-shaped sapphire crystal, as well as an open-case back that’s made from black PVD titanium. The original display features the hour and the minute on the right side of the barrels, while the left side has the power reserve. Anodized black aluminum cylinders to the left indicate the remaining power available, while ones on the right tell time. It’s limited to only 50 watches (more exclusive than the LaFerrari itself) and features a 50-day power reserve - a world record for a hand-wound luxury watch. Price is said to be around $318,000.

Bathing Ape (BAPE) was one of the first true streetwear brands to explode on the scene after being founded by Nigo in 1993. Popular in Japan before hitting the underground streetwear scene in the States, Nigo became one of the top branding specialists in fashion in the early 2000s with his exclusive line of clothes, sneakers and action figures that went for thousands of dollars. And thanks to his iconic ape image that appeared on all his items, Nigo was afforded a quite lavish lifestyle that included the ability to floss some serious rides. Back in our May/June 2004 Issue 19 , we featured a part II of Nigo’s story when he invited us back to Japan (which was continued from Issue 12) and showed off his million-dollar fleet that included: a Lamborghini Gallardo, Rolls-Royce Phantom and Hummer H2. Hot then and still hot now, Nigo’s collection included intricate details like the diamond-encrusted “Spirit of Ecstasy” hood ornament on his Phantom. Like his lavish car collection, his home in Japan featured heaps of luxurious accents like Andy Warhol painting, an envious Louis Vuitton collection and more.

What was the motivation behind your Ferrari 458? I’ve always wanted a Ferrari, but it always felt like something that was untouchable growing up. I never thought I’d get one even though it was also dream of mine. But when the time came and I realized I could really go out and buy one, I did just that! I got it all black. I thought it looked tough. Then one day, I thought it would be so sick if it were our “Diamond Blue” color and thought it would really pop whenever I drove it. I saw people driving red, orange and yellow ones (which popped), but thought our “Diamond Blue” would stand out more and look even more exotic. I had no idea how it

would turn out and it actually looks better than I ever thought it would. Platinum Motorsport did a painted wrap on it since there wasn’t a regular vinyl wrap in that color. Other than the painted wrap, what else did you do to it? I first started with the brake calipers in Diamond Blue. And it originally came with silver wheels, but I had them re-finished in gunmetal to make it different from others. A while later, I decided to do the entire car that color. Inside, I have custom Diamond floor mats and that’s really it. What other cars are you currently pushing? I have a new 2013 Range Rover Supercharged and 2013 Mercedes-Benz S550. The Benz has some 22” Zenetti Capri wheels on it with Nitto Tires. It already came really nice in matte white; a color I hand’t seen before. I don’t think I need to do much else to it since it’s already perfect the way it is. The Range is also white and sits on 22” Zenetti Bellagios that are also on Nitto Tires. I also have a few Chevy Chevelles I take out every once and a while 120 DUBMAG SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013 DUBMAG 121

What got you interested in Chevelles? Growing up in SF, all the gangsters had nice Chevelles. They always looked so expensive to me and I loved them. Again, I never thought I’d own one let alone three. I liked hearing them in the neighborhood, mashing down the street with their motor rumbling at a stop sign. I was like, “Man, that’s a bad ass car.” My favorite would be my 1970 ragtop Chevelle SS 396. It’s almost completely original, except for the paint and interior.

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz S550 sits on 22” x 9” front and 22” x 10.5” rear Zenetti Capri wheels and Nitto INVO 255/30R22 front and 295/25R22 rear tires.

Do you think there’s a difference between Northern Cali and Southern Cali car culture? People are into so many types of cars in both places. SF kids like Hondas and Acuras, with the old school scene being more about muscle cars. You don’t really see too many exotic or nice cars up in SF as you do in L.A. like Ferarris, Lambos and such. You see them everywhere down here since people use them as daily drivers. But here, you don’t have young kids pushing muscle cars like you do in SF. And when you do, it’s usually an older guy. In So. Cal, it’s more about Lowriders than anything.

Nick’s chain is a gold Cedar Tree of Lebanon made by Ben Baller from IF & Co., while his watch is an 18K gold Rolex Sky Dweller.

You definitely have a varied collection, what do you look for in your rides? I’m into everything and my collection reflects that. I have a Ferrari that I love to drive fast in; it’s a beast. The Mercedes and Range Rover are family cars that are for cruising – but the Range Rover has power in it so it’s a dope car on both fronts. Obviously your car collection is attributed to your success with your brand Diamond Supply Co. Are you ever surprised by your overall success? Growing up was rough. I grew up in a group home and didn’t really have any parental guidance and never went to school. I was just a kid whose whole life was about skateboarding with friends. Those who were older would tell me I wouldn’t do much of anything and would always ask what

would I do after skateboarding since I didn’t have much of an education. It’s just a lot of negative stuff people would say to me about my future that made me have doubts about what I could do and achieve. But in the back of my mind, I knew if I wanted to do anything, I’d have to do it on my own. I couldn’t wait for someone to hand me anything. So when I started my brand, I made sure I had a passion for it. That’s been my driving force for the past 15 years now. I love it and am glad it all worked out. When was the moment you realized you wanted to change your life and do something? This one day, I was having a rough time, working at some sh*tty job and chilling at my house. I was

staring at the wall thinking, “What the f*ck am I gonna do with my life?” I kept getting hurt while skateboarding and for months, even years, I’d have these days where I’d be bummed out about life. I always had dreams of owning my own brand, but never knew where to get the resources to start it. Finally, one day, I was like, “F*ck this. I’m going to just do it!” And that’s exactly what I did.

Do you ever go back and reflect on what’s led to your success? I don’t’ really reflect on stuff, but I don’t really have a lot of time to myself to think. I’m either travelling, working on this, working on that, so there’s little time for me. Plus I have a daughter and I’m always with her or my lady . But what I’ve done in the last couple of years has been amazing when I really stop and think of it. What’s the secret to your longevity in streetwear culture? I think the secret of Diamond Supply Co.’s longevity is staying fresh at the time, dropping a lot of new products and staying core to the skateboarding community. We never went out of our realm. Sure, there are people outside of skateboarding that like our stuff, but we really never chased them and always made things we like. We put out things I like personally and drop more than 100 new T-shirt graphics a year. We’re always evolving, but making sure we keep it fresh. We never repeat our graphics and aren’t selling out to anybody. We sell to the same stores we’ve been selling to over the years, picking up a few new accounts here and there, but we’ll never be in a department store. We’re lucky

124 DUBMAG SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

because kids are fickle these days. You have to just keep reinventing yourself and doing new sh*t all the time. Do you guys follow any trends? Not at all. We make what I like and we set our own trends. A design might be out of left field but that’s a good thing. We’re not about to go and follow any hot trends. We’re popular and people copy us. Whatever we make, there’s another brand out there trying to make the same thing, which is why we have to keep making new sh*t. Can you pinpoint the moment when the brand really took off? We’ve been doing it for a while now, but there was a time when we were stagnant. The financials weren’t right and we couldn’t get the business side of things down. We didn’t have the money to produce anything for the orders that were coming in. That was making it hard to really grow. But once we found a way to actually deliver on our orders, it kept doubling and tripling and increasing our sales. That’s when we really started to pop off and that’s what has helped us get to where we’re at now.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013 DUBMAG 125

Some say that the Diamond SB Dunks are what put you on the map. Is this true? We actually didn’t capitalize off of the release like we should’ve since it was during that stagnant period. Yeah, it was successful and we became world renowned for the Dunks (people even voted it the No. 1 Dunk), but it wasn’t what it should have been. We did get a lot of people interested in Diamond who didn’t know about us before, but they still couldn’t really get our product anywhere. That was the problem. If we were popping in stores, we would have killed it and things would have happened for us a lot sooner. But it worked out in the end because it was limited and a lot of people like when you have limited drops. But they don’t know that I never wanted it to be that way. Yeah, some things should be limited in production, but my main line isn’t meant for that. I want to see my designs out there on a lot of people.

The Diamond Supply Co. flagship shop in Los Angeles on Fairfax Ave features all their newest gear and has their iconic Diamond SB Dunk on display.

Do you have a story on the craziest experience or interaction with someone rocking your gear? Yeah, I see people wearing Diamond everywhere now. It’s crazy. I was just at Chipotle and the kid working there had a huge Diamond tattoo on his arm and then my friend told him I was the owner and he freaked out. That’s as crazy as it gets. But I do get surprised when celebrities wear my stuff.

It’s just how you market it. You obviously have to make a good product, but thanks to the Internet, you can share it with the world a lot easier. Instagram is amazing when it comes to this. I started with $500 and would give away my shirts

to friends in the industry, hoping others would take interest in it. Now, as long as your sh*t looks good, anyone can have a brand – and everyone does. There are thousands of brands out there now, which is dope. I love it!

So what brought about your signature Diamond Blue color? I bought an ex-girlfriend something from Tiffany & Co. back in 2003 and had the box sitting around. I had never seen that color on anything before and so I decided to do an all-black shirt with the print in that color. It was a big hit with everyone. Then when it came round for the Diamond Dunk collaboration, I was like, “We’re gonna use this color for it,” and it just popped since there was never a shoe like that before. I changed the color a bit and called it “Diamond Blue” so we wouldn’t have any lawsuits. What advice do you have for kids out there trying to figure out how to make their brand as successful as Diamond Supply Co.? Nowadays, it’s a lot different than when I started out ’cause of the Internet. It was a lot harder to pop off and get recognized before. I was in SF wondering how to get people to know about my sh*t. But now, I think anyone can start a brand.

hat hasn’t he done? A sneakerhead before there were sneakerheads; a DJ to head of A&R at Priority and Aftermath Records; street socialite and tastemaker; and currently the go-to jeweler to the stars. He is a jack of all trades. Ben Baller (born Ben Yang) lives up to the hype that he and the media has created. We caught up with Ben to see what the K-Town Hustler has been up to as he breaks down his car game, business, social media, haters and living it up on his own terms. CAR GAME: What’s your favorite car in your collection? Well, it’s a tie between two cars… I had a 2008 BMW M5, the E60 chassis, and it was fully done up. It had a body kit and 600hp to the wheels; speaking of wheels, it had custom-made 22” Agetros and was slammed. I just loved the way it looked as much as the way it drove. I remember one night, I was racing a Ferrari F430 with three other people in the car and the guy was looking at me like, “Is this really happening? Four people and the guy is in a BMW on 22s next to me?” The other favorite car was my 2004 Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale. I loved that car

and it was my first exotic car ever. It was red and black with red interior and carbon fiber everywhere. I only got to drive it a couple times a month. I’m actually looking for another one again. One thing about both cars is that they were both painfully loud. I mean like NASCAR or a UFO was landing loud. Do you have your eye on anything else right now? It’s funny you say that. About eight months ago, I really wanted the Ferrari 458 and the Lamborghini Aventador. But if I buy either of those cars, my wife told me that I had to buy her a car and other luxury amenities [laughs]. However, I will still probably buy one of those cars in the near future. Did I mention that I love my wife?

134 DUBMAG SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

Are there any specific features of exotic cars that intrigue you? Yeah. It has to be fast, and I mean, exotic fast not Maserati or R8 fast. I mean Bugatti fast! It can’t be rivaled on the road against some souped up Japanese car. It needs to be aggressive and have that mean loud ass exotic super bass in the exhaust note. Navigation is also a must. In L.A., there are so many nice cars that it’s hard to be different or original. So I always have Platinum Motorsport help me if I ever need car tuning advice. So why did you want to get the Rolls-Royce Ghost? I chose the Ghost because it’s the most sporty luxury sedan and it commands the boss title whenever and wherever it is. I’ve owned a 760Li, which is the flagship luxury sedan for BMW, and I’ve owned a fully done up S-Class before, too. Those don’t say boss; those just say you’re doing good. Even the Maybach didn’t really do much for me. It had to be the Ghost. The Phantom is too “old man steez” and you get driven in a Phantom, but you drive the Ghost! I first had it stock and then just threw on some custom made forged 24” chrome 3-piece Agetro wheels, wrapped them in 275/30R24 Falken Tires and called it a day. But after a few months, I had Platinum lower it and I had everything on the car powder coated gloss black. The only thing I left chrome was the Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament and all the Rolls-Royce emblems. Everything else, from the moldings to the exhaust pipes and door handles and even the keyholes, was powder coated gloss black. I got rid of the chrome wheels and powder

coated those all gloss black, too, but I kept the rivets chrome polished. The grille was a b*tch to powder coat; it’s [made up of] 47 pieces. At the end of the day, everyone has done the two-tone matte black to regular black and/or the matte look totally or some sort of mix of black. I wanted something different from David Beckham’s or Kim Kardashian’s Ghost. I wanted a VIP look and

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013 DUBMAG 135

it’s slammed now, so with the metallic onyx paint job Rolls-Royce gave it along with the gloss black accents, my sh*t is looking super proper now! What about the Lexus LFA? The LFA sort of fell in my lap... Lexus North America reached out to me, and I guess they wanted to do some marketing to a younger audience (who really under 30 can afford this, but maybe 0.000001%?), and thanks to my boys Clark and Indo, I got to have one for a few months. I was shooting the second season of my show (which I have walked away from; long story), and so we thought it would be great cross promotion. So what are my thoughts? First off, it feels motorcycle fast. It will kick ass at the snap of your fingers. The sound of the car? It’s f*cking unbelievable. And the handling and looks of the car are up to par in my opinion. But against a Ferrari or Lamborghini? That’s a tough call honestly. Maybe I’m just partial to Italian cars, but the interior of the Lexus is just that of a Japanese car. I don’t feel like it’s a $400,000-car on the inside. Yes, the navigation is nice and easy to use, but the leather doesn’t feel like that of a Ferrari or Lamborghini either. I didn’t get to race anyone in it, so it’s hard to gauge how fast it really is because when it gets to numbers, I say f*ck the numbers. It’s about the driver. Again, I didn’t get that chance to line up against anything worthy. Overall, if I were going to spend $400K on a car? I would have to choose the Aventador. But the LFA is nice and gets lots of looks. I would choose this over the McLaren or a Lamborghini Gallardo and maybe a Ferrari 599 or California, but it would take a lot of thinking if I had to choose between this and a 458 or even FF. Again, the feel is different; it didn’t feel like an NSX, but it wasn’t like a supercar to me. The very moment I stepped foot inside a Bugatti, I was like, “Wow! Whoa! Holy sh*t! This feels like an airplane even in first gear...” But for a Japanese car it deserves a lot of respect. I grew up loving the Supra, but I’m a grown man now. I’m just thankful 136 DUBMAG SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

to have been able to roll this beast on the strength of being a tastemaker. ON BUSINESS: Do you have any upcoming collaborations with Diamond Supply Co.? Yeah, we have five collaborations; the Cutty collab just dropped a couple months ago and there was a line around the block and it sold out on shelves across the globe. One of the collabs with Diamond is with Grizzly, which is a brand within Diamond itself, but that’s set for spring 2014... I have a big release for the holiday season, too, so look out for that. It’s been crazy. I have been doing in–store appearances around the country. Diamond Supply Co. is an independent skate brand from the Bay Area that turned into a hundred-million-dollar

company, but most kids think it’s just an urban streetwear brand. I’m glad to be a part of the team and hyped I have been a part of their success. How has your network of celebrities helped your success? You know it’s crazy. Everyone says celebrities help sell things and sometimes that’s true; some of my clients have helped, some have not even though in their own mind they thought they did. I think that the amount of celebrities that follow me has really helped my business. When people want a $500,000-piece, they know Ben Baller has to make that piece. Obviously, there have been a few celebrities who have increased my exposure. For example, Justin Bieber and The Kardashians have been key characters that have increased my popularity overall.

How did you become involved with Aftermath Records? I met Dre while I was a DJ at the Creeque Alley bar, which was a bar owned by movie producer and rock and roll legend Lou Adler and Denzel Washington. One day in the studio, Dre connected me with the label that birthed him. So I was at Priority Records and then Dre told me to come start up this label with him. I never really spoke about this actual moment. I think about it right now and wonder, “What if I told Dre that I didn’t want to work for his record label?” Where would I be? I really wonder what would have happened if I stayed at Priority. We were the biggest record label at the time with Master P and Westside Connection killing it!

You are partnered with World Star Hip Hop. What are the parameters of your alliance with them? Nah. Q, the head of World Star Hip Hop, had bought a lot of jewelry from me, but our friendship now is much more important. I met Q at the Beverly Hills Hotel a couple years ago. We immediately clicked because we both had similar upbringings and a similar story and both have that “chief executive/captain mentality.” One day I started researching World Star Hip Hop and was amazed at how much power and magnitude this operation had that only employed six people. It is close to a billion-dollar company. I’m happy to be a part of their family, but on a personal level, Q is my son’s godfather; so it’s deeper than business. How has social media helped your business? Unbelievable. It’s 85% to 90% of the business in terms of marketing. I mean if social media didn’t exist, I would still get it in on the forums or blogs. But now all I have to do is post an Instagram pic and bang! Between that, Twitter and Facebook, that’s like close to a million people being reached within seconds. I also dabble around in the Asian social media outlets, as well. What is your favorite piece of jewelry that you have made? It would probably be any of Jonas Bevacqua’s jewelry (CEO of LRG, RIP). Either the panda or LRG cycle piece. All the stuff I made for him was the best quality I ever made and so consistent. It still sh*ts on the game, and he was the yellow gold king early. Outside of that, it’s the super detailed little things like these little skulls that were made for this rock star that were completely solid and fully iced out. We set a 1-carat VVS1 E-color diamond in each eyeball. They’re beautiful. I just like high detail.

Do you have any plans to expand your business to other locations? Yeah, we are in the middle of opening a store in Beverly Hills, CA and one in Koreatown in Los Angeles. We may build stores in other major cities like Las Vegas. It takes a long time to actually create a store. Just building the glass display cases take forever. ON ADVICE:

“My chest was done by the best black and gray tattoo artists on earth -Mister Cartoon on the script and the rest by Chuey Quintanar. My body is like one big ghetto timeline of my life. I know where I was mentally and physically during every session. I regret getting the 3 color tattos I do have. But all good. It’s something you learn later. You take chances and risks and its permanent with ink. Tattoo removal wasn’t around during my time coming up... and neither was the pussy ass numbing cream.” – Ben Baller

Do you have any concrete advice for aspiring jewelers? Rule No. 1 is to get paid! On a lighter note: You got to lose a little before you gain a lot. You might have to give out some free shi*t initially if you have a little name or no name at all. But after a certain moment, you don’t have to give out anything if your work and marketing is done right. I was blessed. I had a really good product early on to market. But I had top-notch marketing to back it up. People don’t realize that I had to study a lot for this line of work. It wasn’t through school or anything proper like that. I had to learn from my uncle old school style and he taught me certain things about the actual craft of being a jeweler. But my cousin Steve helped out a lot, too. You need a great teacher and you need to study the greats: i.e. Jacob [The Jeweler], Manny and Tito, etc. and, of course, the godfathers of fine jewelry like Harry Winston, Cartier and such. You should apprentice for somebody (if possible). Ideally, you should have your own business. I couldn’t go into business owing someone or working for someone because then later if I wanted out, I’d be assed out and I would leave with nothing. My uncle

hasn’t been involved for about five years now; it’s just me and my cousin. I used money I raised from selling sneakers. I don’t know how everyone else does it, but you have to have capital to become a jeweler - at least if you’re going to buy and sell. Remember, all that gold and diamonds sitting in your display cases is cash! I sit here sometimes and read random things and will come across some kids saying, that I’m only the face of the brand or the cars aren’t mine, etc. I have been doing this for almost nine years with IF & Co. and been doing fly whips since the mid-’90s. The face of the brand doesn’t take $250,000-plus worth of jewelry by himself on trips every time he leaves if he has no ownership [laughs]. To rent the cars I own, they’d range from like $1,800 to $2,000 a day…c’mon man. Some of y’all sound so silly. So, don’t be a hater when you’re coming up. And some more advice is to ignore the haters. They make me laugh. I can honestly say not once has a hater or hateful comment ever made me feel bad or upset. But on a more serious note - when it comes to this business, though, no matter how cool you are with another jeweler or aspiring jeweler, know they don’t want you to succeed. Keep the grass cut low so you can see the snakes. Remember, there are no shortcuts in this game. Every overnight success was 10 years or more in the making. This is the longest trade I have done professionally next to DJ’ing. Any shout outs? I am so very grateful to the DUB Magazine staff. Seriously, I’ve known Herman and Myles forever. We have been down since the Industry

Insider days so after two previous features, it’s amazing to get the cover of a magazine I love so much! Thank you Rich and Brian for taking the best pictures of my ugly ass and thank you to my endorsements: Diamond Supply Co. and RIF Los Angeles for always keeping me draped in the freshest sh*t from head to toe. My motto in life is to be healthy and wealthy. I have had an amazing year and none of this could have happened without my Icee Fresh Team (my cousin Steve especially) and with so much halfway success stories, but more failure, I have come to an incredible point of green lights and right turns in my life. I am very blessed for sure. This isn’t the end and I haven’t plateaued or

come close to my apex. Since the day I met my wife, Nicolette, I have not lost in business or in life, period. I was having a really tough year prior to meeting her and it’s crazy how sh*t turned around. My son is the best thing to ever happen to me! He is my motivation and I thank God everyday for him. I love you London! I can’t ask for anything else. Thank you everyone! Mad love and RIP Jonas and Leo. Oh sh*t…I can’t forget about Platinum Motorsport! This photo shoot or any press I’ve done that is car related would have never happened without George, Jack, Sam and Rob – my #PML family. They have been hooking up and tuning my cars for 10 years now. Nobody touches my cars except them!

MARIO “SIN” ESCOBOSA

okturnal Car Club is known for having some of the wildest show cars around, but that’s changing thanks to their member, Mario “Sin” Escobosa. Even though they’re still churning out award-winning rides with some of today’s craziest modifications, Sin has helped take the well known Southern California car club to the next level with his luxurious and exotic fleet. The 32-year-old pawn shop owner (who also invests in gold) first came up in the car show scene in 2005 with his tricked-out Chrysler 300C that was christened the “transformer” for its heavily modded attributes that featured many motorized elements. “I had motorized a lot of things on the car like the trunk, rear doors and more, which was something many weren’t doing back then,” Sin says. Although proud of his Nokturnal ride, Sin was growing impatient with all the hassles and headaches that went into getting a car in pristine show-ready condition and started to grow weary of his Chrysler. “I got tired of waiting for it in the shop,” he confesses. “It was in the shop for practically two years and I couldn’t take it anymore, so I decided to sell it. I knew I wanted another car to show with Nokturnal, but didn’t want to deal with the drama that went into building such a customized car.” That’s when he started transitioning into high-end vehicles, choosing to go with a 2004 Lamborghini Gallardo that he bought in 2008 – the first exotic for Nokturnal. “Business was going good and I decided to buy my childhood dream car. I used to have this one poster of a Lamborghini Countach up on my walls as a kid and knew one day I’d own my very own Lambo. Of course, I was talked about in the

car club scene and a lot of haters thought I had rented it or something. But for the most part, a lot of people were praising Nokturnal and were like, ‘Wow, game over…they just killed the car scene with that car.’” Fast-forward five years and Sin’s car game has only gotten better and more expensive. Interested in a vehicle’s style, his garage now sports rides that don’t need over-the-top customizations to turn heads because they’re already attention grabbers on their own. “I’m all about style. I won’t buy it if I don’t like how it looks and all my cars reflect that.” And Sin’s garage is full of style, which includes a 2012 Lamborghini Aventador, 2009 Nissan GT-R, 2013 Audi A7, 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Hennessey Edition, 2012 Lamborghini Gallardo

Super Trofeo Stradale, and a 2013 Ducati 1199 Panigale S bike. With such an impressive collection, you’d expect him to have a favorite, right? But for Sin, all of his four-wheeled toys are No. 1 in his heart for different reasons. For his daily drivers, Sin switches out his Audi A7 and his Cadillac CTS-V, usually opting for the Audi most days. “I had an Audi A5 coupe before and it was too small, so I decided to get the A7 sedan version.” And because customizing is still a huge thing for Sin, he decided to dress it in a matte metallic blue wrap and dropped a set of HRE S104 wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero tires, and added a KW coilover suspension and 152 DUBMAG SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

custom exhaust, custom front grille and oneoff Fast Intentions exhaust. Sin’s Cadillac was purchased back in 2010 after a buddy at a Cadillac dealership called him and told him about the first CTS-V’s in California. After checking it out, he knew he had to have it. “I liked it for its luxury aspect,” he explains. “I used it as a daily driver for about a year before I got the Audi. I previously had a CTS sedan and liked how it drove.” But Sin wasn’t fully satisfied with its power, calling up Hennessey Performance in Texas. They gave it their 700 package; which boosted horsepower to 700, while California Upholstery did the custom interior that sports black inserts with white diamond stitching. He then topped it off with HRE S101 wheels and a KW coilover suspension. Sin’s Nissan GT-R is “pound-for-pound the perfect car for its price.” It’s also his most customized ride in his auto menagerie. It features an Alpha 6 Performance Package, upgraded front end, HRE P44SC satin black wheels in Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber, KW adjustable coilover suspension, GReddy exhaust and Zele Performance full carbon fiber lip kit.The interior is stock, but he’s currently contemplating on upgrading it, while its exterior is smothered with a custom Arancio Borealis orange paint scheme. “When it came out, I immediately loved it,” he says. “It’s honestly the best car out there

for its price. It has so much power, great handling and everything on the car is just perfect. For that price, it out performs other cars like an M3 or Mercedes AMG (stock, of course).” On the weekends, Sin likes to take out one of his two Lamborghinis (especially if he’s participating in one of LP4’s weekend exotic runs since he’s a member of the online forum). His

Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale is special to him since it’s one of 150 ever built (with 50 of them in the U.S.). Previously interested in only all-white rides, he decided to get it in red to match its red and black interior and added a set of HRE P40SC satin black wheels and Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, in addition to a KW suspension kit. But it’s the Lamborghini Aventador that was his highly anticipated purchase. “I wanted one the day they came out,” he says. “When it first came out, it had a ridiculous markup on it and so

I waited and got the Gallardo instead. But that yearning for it was always there. I could have sold the Gallardo to get it, but once I drove it, I couldn’t get rid of it so I just decided to wait a bit. I actually just picked it up a month ago and I am totally in love with it.” Already beautiful when left untouched, Sin opted to add a set of HRE P101 satin black wheels with Pirelli P-Zero Nero rubber, which are HRE’s latest wheel style. “My Aventador is the only car 154 DUBMAG SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

with them on. It’s an unreleased model. I’m also planning on doing an exhaust system on the car.” Besides cars, Sin is an avid bike enthusiast and has a white Ducati Superbike 1199 Panigale S that fulfills his two-wheeled passions, something that first started back with his first Suzuki GSXR 750 in 2004. “I just got the bike a few months ago after I got the itch to own a bike again. I don’t ride it much, but it’s a beautiful bike and I wish I had more time to take it.” Wishing he had more time to drive them all is a sentiment Sin always has. But he makes sure to give each one of his cars equal love, switching them out over time. Although his garage seems to be pretty full already, Sin does mention that his next purchase will most likely be a RollsRoyce Ghost. Like any typical person, Sin has taken to Instagram (@sin_noklife) to showcase his lifestyle, posting pics of his rides in particular, accumulating more than 25K followers who adore his vehicles. But despite such a lavish collection, Sin doesn’t want his fans or fellow club members to think of him as being cocky or a snob and does everything in his power to make sure he stays grounded. “I want people to see me as one of them,” he says. “When people meet me, I want them to feel as if I am one of the guys; just a normal person they can talk to how they would with their friends and not in a different way. They can talk to me normally and joke with me like I was one of their friends, and not feel intimidated because of the cars or wealth. That’s why I say I’m the same person. I don’t need fancy suits or cigars. When I meet [Instagram] followers they tell me, ‘Sh*t bro, you’re cool as hell!’ or ‘Damn bro, you’re not like other guys that think they’re too cool to talk to us.’ I see myself as one of them ’cause I am.”

THANKS TO DUB for giving me the opportunity in being featured in the magazine; Mitch & Famous Autosports for the top notch work on all the rides; HRE wheels for the opportunity to allow me to work with them with all my cars. They have the best of the best wheels. Thanks to my car club Nokturnal ’cause they are awesome! Thanks to the kiddos for helping with the rides and being there for me! And Most Important, my son Damien! For keeping me going and striving because I’m doing this all for him, for his future! Love you Damien!

estled on the busy and iconic Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood, CA, RDB LA is one of L.A.’s premier shops, specializing in just about everything customization related – from tricking out high-end rides for the rich and famous to doing simple everyday mods for the average Joe. Regardless of your bank account, coowner Vik Tchalikian and his crew will treat your car as if it were their own because quality work and superior customer service is what they strive to provide to all their customers. But their Sunset Blvd. shop is actually their second location, with the first on Pico Blvd in the heart of the City of Angels. While the Pico shop focuses more on heavy collision work, it’s the Sunset location that sees all the action. “Since it’s a pretty busy street, we’re always getting walk-ins,” Vik details. “It’s also in an exclusive neighborhood that has a lot of high-end business types and celebrities, so it’s the perfect location for getting customers with Hondas to getting those with Benzes or Lamborghinis.” RDB LA is known for a lot of things, particularly their eye for dressing up cars with their skilled paintwork. “We’re very quality oriented and have painted every car you could imagine. From Ferraris and Lamborghinis worth millions of dollars to old school and classic vehicles.” According to Vik, even though you can customize a car, it may not always come out looking right, a problem in today’s industry. “Our goal is to make our customers satisfied with the way it looks and if we don’t like it, the customer won’t see it until we do. It’s all about tasteful ways of doing things.” Although they offer many services that can be done by other shops, besides quality setting them a part, RDB LA does something that no other known

shops currently do – provide in-house mechanical repairs for a variety of makes and models. So instead of having to go back to the dealership to get oil changes, alignments and more, you can easily roll up to RDB LA to get your car modified and have the oil changed at the same time. “It provides our clients with convenience since we really are a ‘one-stop shop,’” Vik mentions. “We’re currently providing this service to a lot of models, but hope to grow into a shop that’s certified to do it for high-end cars like Lambos and Ferraris.” Eventually, he’d also like to spread out business in other parts of the nation and even one day go internationally. As they work on expanding, Vik has more than his hands full with his current two shops, providing custom work for the rides for the likes of Reggie Bush, Usher, Deadmau5, Jordan Farmer and plenty of well-off patrons. “We did Reggie Bush’s Lamborghini Aventador that everybody in LA has seen him driving. He came to us after seeing the one that we showed at last year’s LA Auto Show that featured a full body kit. We were actually the first to do so and painted it matte pearl white. Not a lot of people know how to work on them and with that one, we basically dismantled it and placed it back to together in pristine condition.” And that’s another trait that sets apart RDB LA - the fact that they aren’t afraid of modifying some of the world’s already exquisite and expensive cars. “We did a set of black and white McLaren MP4-12Cs for private clients in 164 DUBMAG SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

Miami in only three weeks. We also did a rare Bertone Pirana, which was a concept car produced in 1967 and is the only one in existence, for a customer who wanted to debut it at Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance. He wanted us to fully repaint it and we made sure to put it back together without damaging a single thing. It was pretty scary to do, but in the end it came out great and everyone was impressed.” They’ve also worked on several classics, making sure to always handle them with care. “We’re always detail oriented and make sure to always stay up to date on all makes and models to provide the best work possible. We carefully take a part these cars and then every screw and bolt is accounted for. At times it can be tough, but it’s something we pride ourselves on doing.” To add to their already unique offerings, RDB LA also fabricates their own handmade exterior kits for models like Mercedes-Benz and Bentleys and can create one-off creations at clients’ requests. While there are so many

customization shops, RDB LA takes things to the next level, enjoying jobs that no one else in the world does. They are actually the only ones in the world to have the guts to open a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren’s taillights, modifiy the design, reseal it and then put it back on the car. “We also made a custom widebody for a Bentley in only a month which is unheard of,” Vik confesses. “The customization work we do is crazy. We do it faster and different than most shops.” Currently in their garage are a few Aston Martins, Ferraris, Maseratis, with Vik mentioning that the shop gets a lot of Mercedes-Benz AMGs, in addition to the usual Hondas, BMWs, Audis, VWs and the like. But the one car he hasn’t had the chance to get his hands on is a Bugatti Veyron. Of course, it’s only a matter of time before one nonchalantly strolls into the shop!

ON LOCATION ROAD RALLY EVENTS

C FOUR POPULAR CROSS-COUNTRY ROAD RALLIES

ross-country road rallies have been a part of American automobile culture since the 1970s. Four unsanctioned cross-country road races called the Cannonball Baker Sea-ToShining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash were held in the 1970s, which started in New York City (then later in Darien, Connecticut) and ended in Redondo Beach, California. This actual crosscountry road race inspired the 1981 box office hit movie Cannonball Run, starring Burt Reynolds.

BULLRUN RALLY BULLRUN.COM | FACEBOOK.COM/BULLRUNRALLY @BULLRUNRALLY The Bullrun Rally is one of the most glamorous luxury lifestyle automotive rallies in the United States that’s been around for 10 years. Each year, a hundred of the world’s finest supercars and luxury vehicles go on an epic 8-day rolling party across the United States. Fueled by an impressive schedule of public and private events at the finest venues and hotels in the most exciting cities in the Unites States, Bullrunners - with a smattering of high-profile celebrities - make their way from one checkpoint to the next, learning their destinations daily, winding to a close each night in the party capitals of America. But it’s just been in the last decade that cross-country road rallies have become very popular as brought about by the rise of social media and the involvement of high-profile celebrities. Currently, there are four popular cross-country road rallies and, fortunately, none of them closely resemble what goes on in the movie Cannonball Run; none of the them are timed races or purposely try to break traffic and speed limit laws.

In just five years, the goldRush Rally has established itself as one of the premier lifestyle automotive road rallies in the United States and has attracted international participants year after year. A tight knit group of automobile aficionados from the automotive online forum Luxury4Play band together once a year and get behind the wheel of their Audis, Bentleys, Bimmers, Bugattis, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Maseratis, McLarens, Porsches and Rolls-Royces for a memorable cross-country automotive romp. goldRush Rally bills itself more like a scenic driving adventure along the most breathtaking routes in the county, then makes pit stops every evening at five-star hotels that are capped by nightly VIP parties and entertainment for participating rally teams and other guests.

GUMBALL 3000 GUMBALL3000.COM | FACEBOOK.COM/GUMBALL3000 @GUMBALL3000 The Gumball 3000 is an annual international road rally founded by Maximillion Cooper in 1999. Each year, 120 cars of the mostly exotic and luxurious variety join the 3,000-mile trek over public roads, crossing international borders. However, unusual entries, such as outrageous campers and cop cars, have joined the party in recent years. This road rally attracts the most celebrity participation every year, with past high-profile participants like rapper Bun B, hip-hop artist Eve, DJ David Guetta, skateboarding legend Tony Hawk, rapper Xzibit, drummer Travis Barker, Oscar-winning actor Adrien Brody, retired NBA player Dennis Rodman, Snoop Lion (formerly Snoop Dogg), and even members of the Royal families of Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Just like Bullrun and goldRush, the Gumball 3000 rally is not a serious race so there is no prize for being the fastest to reach a destination. Organizers emphasize that this is a road trip adventure and not a race.

Since 2007, Targa Trophy has been producing automotive lifestyle events for sports car and driving enthusiasts. Targa Trophy events incorporate a road rally with a car show, nightlife parties and other lifestyle elements at the final destination in a package that is accessible to many car enthusiasts. Events range from singleday road rallies to three-day driving adventures. One unique feature included in Targa Trophy are the checkpoints, where one has to follow specific instructions in order to show proof (a photo taken, a receipt from a purchase made at the checkpoint or some other proof) that one has made the required pitstop. From an automotive standpoint, Targa Trophy welcomes vehicles of all sorts: exotics, European, JDM, American muscle and trucks.
