ummer is the best time of year! The weather is great and it’s the perfect time to take your favorite vehicle out cruising. Professional skateboarder Greg Lutzka is getting ready for a few summer competitions and letting off steam in either his BMW 5-Series or one of two Harleys. Lutzka was featured in Harley-Davidson’s Freedom Tour campaign that showcased five influencers as they learned to ride Harleys for the first time. Now, he’s a seasoned pro and will spend the summer logging in more miles on his motorcycles. Theotis Beasley is another well known skateboarder, who always has a grin on his face. Check out his story on why he barely got his license at the age of 23, has a Bentley and how he still hitches rides with friends. Champion pugilist Abner Mares will be working hard this summer if the highly anticipated fight against Leo Santa Cruz goes down later this fall. But, it won’t be all work and no play for the three-time world champion, who is looking forward to becoming one of boxing’s all time greats while giving inspiration back to his community. Ty Dolla $ign is having a tremendous breakout year and his summer is packed with festivals, concerts and radio appearances before he drops his debut album in the fall. The R&B sensation also plans to carve out some much needed time to figure out how he wants to restore and customize his Impala by taking notes on an Eleanor-inspired 1967 Ford Mustang. TAG TEAM I was wondering what was happening with Luda since it’s been a minute since he’s dropped anything new. He always comes out bangers, and I’m bumping Ludaverse in my ride right now. I’ve been to one of his concerts and have been to spots where DJ Infamous has been behind the decks...he definitely knows how to turn up a party! Looking forward to hearing what he comes out with next. As for their rides, the Range was cool, the Escalade was nice on the Savinis, but that Honda 450R is insane with its 28s!
Man, you guys did a great job on the Camry you put on the cover of Issue 93. I’ve never given them a double take while out on the road, but after seeing your DUB Edition version, I wouldn’t mind getting one. The way you guys lowered it and the wheels make it have a new luxe status. The DUB beats in the trunk look good, too. How do they sound? INK DREAMS I totally get why Kid Ink would choose his Corvette Stingray over his Lambo Huracán and would choose the same! A Corvette is classic and its looks are just as hot as a Huracán. I’d be too scared to really test out a Huracán’s limits given how expensive that ride is, where a Corvette provides just as much power and fun behind the wheel without having to worry about being so delicate with it. I’d opt for a black ‘Vette, though, and customize it to look like the Batmobile right from the dealership. I don’t know why he didn’t do that from the start! Israel M. Via email

2016 CHEVROLET CORVETTE Z06 C7.R EDITION Inspired by the C7.R race car, Chevy is releasing the Corvette Z06 C7.R Edition that actually has more horsepower than the actual track car, pushing out 560 hp versus 491 ponies. To help bring all that horsepower to a stop, the Corvette will come equipped with sizable carbon ceramic Brembo brakes. The Z06 will also feature a carbon fiber hood that has exposed sections, allowing you to see the grain, as well as exposed carbon fiber aero kit. Matching carbon fiber can be found inside, with other performance features including Performance Traction Management and Magnetic Ride Control. Buyers will be able to choose from Racing Yellow Tintcoat or Black, with a Jet Black leather interior and contrasting yellow stitching. Exact pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s expected to go for more than $100,000, with only 500 units available.
FALCON F7 SUPERCAR Ferrari and Lamborghini better watch out because there’s a new supercar competitor on the block. A small start-up out of Holly, MI called Falcon Motorsports is producing very high-end supercars by hand that will rival some of the best on earth. The family-run operation is building custom supercars that start at $295,000 and features aluminum and carbon fiber chassis that makes it lightweight and a twin-turbo V8
PORSCHE’S NEW HEADQUARTERS AND EXPERIENCE CENTER IN ATLANTA Porsche has opened up its new Headquarters and Experience Center on the Northeast corner of the Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport. They spent $100 million on the investment that’s comprised of 27 acres and will include a 1.6-mile Driver Development Track, which is a course that will include six different sections. It’ll even have an off-roading course and the only Kick Plate in North America. Visitors will also be able to scope out their heritage cars on display and loads of artwork. option called Restaurant 356. But the location won’t be all play and will house the company’s North American employees. It’s the largest investment Porsche has made outside of Germany and they expect more than 30,000 visitors a year.

A
year ago, Clarion set course in a new direction, straying away from building the usual highly customized show car, in favor of building cars that resonate with the masses and kicked off its Clarion Builds program. The goal of Clarion Builds is to connect with automobile enthusiasts of all backgrounds by tackling unique restoration projects of iconic cars and trucks in cooperation with key partners, hand-selected for each individual project. Clarion’s drive to “connect with automobile enthusiasts of all backgrounds” is clearly evident

with the program’s first candidate – an iconic 1974 BMW 2002 – a car loved by nearly everyone. “We’ve built custom tuners and show cars in the past and it’s certainly fun, but the fact is, most of our customers don’t drive show cars. And when all’s said and done, outside of car shows and events, most show cars really can’t be used practically,” comments Allen H. Gharapetian, Clarion’s head of marketing. “We had a different idea – to restore cars with a rich history to like new condition, maintaining all of their factory curves and lines. While we, of course, plan on upgrading
each of our builds substantially, we want to do so in a manner that kept the modifications subtle in appearance, not to take away from the factory appeal and the original vision of these vehicles – and working with our key industry partners on this has made this possible.” To help with the build of the 2002, Clarion enlisted team racing driver and 2X Formula Drift champion, Chris Forsberg for direction, the SoCal-based vintage BMW experts at CoupeKing to manage the build, and KONI, TOYO, K&N, Mothers, New Century BMW and many others to take on various components of the build. “We started with what looked like a good car,” says Jubal Leierer, Clarion Builds project manager. “But it wasn’t until we got it stripped down did the car reveal its true form. Luckily this was something CoupeKing was more than happy to manage and was able to get the body as straight as the day it left the German assembly line in late 1973. The engine was tired and on the verge of self-destruction, so we pulled it and completely rebuilt it with updated components from our partners at Ireland Engineering, Pelican Parts and BMW. We were able to increase horsepower by about 80% over stock without any forced induction. We got the suspension dialed in, with KONI adjustable ride height struts, new springs, upgraded sway bars, Wilwood brakes on all four corners, and Toyo rubber.”

The wheels used on Clarion’s 2002 restomod aren’t 20”, but instead a rare find - actual German-built 30-year-old original 15” BBS RS-001 two-piece alloys that were the perfect specs for the Bavarian classic. The vintage racing wheels were straightened, sandblasted, powder coated and polished to better than factory condition. US-destined 2002s weren’t available with the luxurious “Lux” package, but CoupeKing has friends in all the right places and was able to outfit the car’s interior with the proper seats and panels in beautiful Oyster leather. The Alcantara headliner and contrasting dark gray carpet really do complete the look of this car. However, as you get to the car’s center console you start to notice that this tiny classic packs some serious sound! Clarion wanted to give the 2002 some serious sound, but didn’t want to hinder the car’s practicality by filling the rear seat area with subs or eliminate the use of the trunk, and the guys at BP Autosound in Buena Park, CA were up to the challenge and delivered awesome results. The car’s center console was modified to hold a Google-powered Clarion NX605 head unit, which feeds a 6-channel Clarion XC6610
amp custom mounted in the trunk. Channels 1 and 2 of the amp feed the custom front kick panels which hold Clarion SRG1622S 6 ½” twoway components and tweeters. Channels 3 and 4 feed the rear package, which hosts two Clarion SRG6953R 5-way 6x9s. In the trunk, BP Autosound created all-new leather-wrapped panels that allowed them to nicely display the XC6610 amp in the floor under plexiglass, while keeping the two Clarion WG2520D subs tight up against the rear seat in a sealed enclosure. The custom LED lighting adds a tuner element to the car, while maintaining the level of class you’d expect from a classic BMW. The Clarion Builds projects was a huge success and has been enthusiastically received by audiences on social media, and in person at a ton of events. The car will be hitting a bunch of different shows throughout the year, and will eventually be auctioned off, where the proceeds will be donated to a major national charity. Clarion already has a few ideas in mind for the next build but haven’t pulled the trigger just yet. Follow the updates on this project, as well as learn about future projects at clarionbuilds.com.

here’s no denying that Ryan Sheckler has grown to become one of the most influential skateboarders of all-time. The 25-year-old skate pro has come a long way and has helped advance skate culture to become a mainstream sport that’s embraced all over the world. Having learned how to ride when he was just a toddler, Ryan became a skateboarding sensation at an early age and by the time he was 18, was able to floss a slew of awesome rides like a Range Rover, a lifted Dodge Ram 2500 and a Jeep Wrangler that he showcased in Issue 56, 2008.

Orange County Diesel outfitted his then 2008 Ram 2500 with a custom 6” lift with King Shocks and 22” KMC Monster Wheels wrapped in some Toyo Open Country M/T rubber. Other mods his truck was hooked up with include a one-off exhaust, Glassworks Unlimited fender flares and a massive sound system by Kicker. The DUB Edition 2008 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited he had rolled on color-matched 26” TIS 10 wheels with Pirelli tires and color-matched exterior trim, tinted tail lights and a custom-built DUB Edition mesh grille. Sheckler has always been about giving back and his Range Rover was actually auctioned off for the Children’s Cancer Foundation. One lucky bidder walked away with a hooked up Range that sported a custom-painted Strut mesh grille and side vent package, Kicker system and 26” Asanti AF 132 Wheels with Toyo Tires.

The N-Largo kit widens the vehicle to 80.7” (stock is only 76.5”) and raises output of the Ferrari’s V12 to 781 ponies, up from 729 hp thanks to new mapping for the ECU and a high-flow exhaust system. Exterior modifications consist of carbon fiber components, including new fender and bumpers, custom side sills, five-piece diffuser and rear wing. Also included with the conversion kit are bespoke 21” forged three-piece front wheels and 22” rear wheels. And to complement the widened dimensions, the suspension has been tweaked, lowering the ride by 1.6”. There’s also a front lift function that will make it easier to navigate challenging roads at the push of a button. To complete the transformation, MC Customs laid down an eye-catching matte red paint job that further adds to the Ferrari’s unique styling. The N-Largo kit was tested in a wind tunnel to make sure that the new additions reduce negative lift and improve handling stability.

“It’s extremely aggressive, yet clean,” Tadeo mentions. “It enhances the aerodynamics of the vehicle, both in performance and looks.” And because the shop is familiar with such intricate builds, there were no challenges for this project since the kit was “extremely well built and designed,” Tadeo adds. Although this might be his first Novitec Rosso Ferrari F12 tuning upgrade, it certainly won’t be his last!

ome people need to flaunt their success with a garage filled with cars they don’t even drive, while others prefer to take a modest approach. Pro skateboarder Greg Lutzka belongs in the latter category. The veteran skater has been riding the streets, racking up sponsors and cashing skate competition checks for a while now, but his taste for the finer things in life is pretty simple. All he needs is his BMW 5-Series and his two Harley-Davidsons to make him happy. This is Lutzka’s second BMW and is his best yet (the first one he bought after winning his first skate competition).

“I’ve always been into European cars since I was young,” he says. “Those kinds of cars are just awesome cars to drive, especially German ones. They handle so well and are really stylish, which is probably why I’ve always liked them. My first Bimmer, I drove from Milwaukee, WI to California and drove that thing for a few years until my career picked up and I bought a Bentley GT.” After selling his Bentley, Lutzka decided to go back to his first true love and a 5-Series was his first choice. “I test drove other cars and even had an Audi before, but didn’t like it and got rid
of it,” he confesses. “Nothing beats a Bimmer and what’s great about them is that they’re not too expensive, yet still luxurious and are fun to drive. They have great interiors, their suspension handles really well and it’s seriously one of the best rides I’ve ever owned.”

They really set off the overall look of my BMW,” he says. “It drives good right now, and I feel that when you lower it, although it might look nice, you’re really compromising its ride. All I need is a nice set of wheels and tinted windows and I’m good to go!” Lutzka is also sponsored by Kicker and will be adding a booming sound system in the near future. When he’s not cruising L.A. streets in his 5-Series, he’s hitting the open road in his 2013 Harley-Davidson Street Bob Dyna that he just started riding over a year ago. In fact, Lutzka was a motorcycle virgin, with his Harley passion ignited after getting sponsored by them and participating in their Freedom Tour campaign that showcased five influencers as they learned to ride Harleys.

“They’re from Milwaukee and so am I, and they wanted to get a skateboarder personality to appeal to a younger demographic and so that’s how the partnership began,” he says. “They also wanted someone that had never ridden a bike before because their whole campaign was about showing the public how easy it is to learn. And they really are! I had a blast and now love to ride my Harley through the canyons in L.A. and especially during rush hour traffic since I can just zip through it all.” Lutzka also admits that it’s been one of his favorite partnerships to date and enjoys doing all the YouTube promo videos that shows off his newfound riding skills. He’s become so engulfed with riding that he now has more than 20,000 miles under his belt and admits that it feels like he’s been riding all his life. And unlike his BMW, the Street Bob boasts a number of modifications, including performance suspension, shocks, fairing and seat. Thanks to the amazing partnership with Harley-Davidson, Lutzka now has two bikes since Harley-Davidson recently sent him a new 2015 Dyna Low Rider bike. “Between the three rides, it’s a great mix,” he says. “I’m going to switch out the bikes quite a bit, but Street Bob will always be my favorite since it was my very first Harley.”

This summer, he’s looking forward to shredding in the Dew Tour and hopefully taking home first place. Having been competing for 15 years, Lutzka knows what it takes to win contests and his secret to success is literally riding every single day.” I don’t call it practicing at all since I enjoy it,” he describes. “I know my board like the back of my hand, and when you’re always on it, you become so comfortable that you go into competitions not really thinking about it as much.” And just like his board, Lutzka has become so comfortable on his Harleys that he’s looking forward to racking up more miles on them this summer.

What was your first ride when the checks started rolling in? I’m 24 and barely got my license last year. I went years without driving, so I’m still pretty new to the streets. My homeboy, who skates with me, would drive me everywhere, so I didn’t think I needed a car. But when I started to go to more
and more meetings, I felt I needed to get my own ride finally since I always had to make them around my boy’s schedule. I got tired of looking around for someone to take me. But my first car was a Porsche Cayenne that my sister told me to get. I didn’t really want it at first, but when I saw it up close, I was like, “Damn, this is hot!” I actually had the Porsche before I had my license. It would just sit out back and I’d always look at it wishing I could drive it. Then I got my license and have been coasting ever since then!

The Porsche is a nice ride, but tell us about your Bentley. There was this car lot - European Auto House - that I’d always pass by and then one day I actually stopped to check out their new rides. At first a BMW caught my eye and then I saw the Bentley and fell in love with it and decided to trade in the Porsche for it. Right now I only have the Bentley. What mods have you done to it so far? I just added a set of Savini Wheels to it. I had been a fan of theirs on social media and hit them up one day about getting some wheels, and they got back to me and it’s been a cool deal. I was down for whatever style and didn’t have anything in mind, so they helped guide me on what would look best. I also got it wrapped by RDB LA. They hooked it up with a gloss and matte wrap, so now it’s two-tone and looks dope. I also have speakers that Alpine sent over and want to put those in soon.
Do you plan on growing your garage? I’m just happy with the Bentley, and I don’t really drive it that often; I still have friends drive me [haha]. I mainly use it to drive to events, meetings and other big things in the area. I’m from Inglewood, so driving around in such a nice car has people thinking you do other things. But I’m looking to get a Honda Civic or Accord for everyday use to hit up skate spots and stuff. All I need is one ride; I don’t need anything crazy. Do you have a dream ride, though? To be honest, hopefully I can get a Rolls-Royce one day – that would be tight. I think a Ferrari or Lambo would be too much for me.

So how’s the pro skateboarder life treating you so far? I’ve been pro for about four years now and it’s been great. But I’ve been skating since I was 13. I have great sponsors like Nike and have been traveling the world and working on videos and stuff. I’m always skateboarding. I don’t really do a lot of skate contests since I’m not that competitive, but I’ve done a couple like the Dew Tour. I’ll be doing some stuff for Lil Wayne and his Young Money team soon, so that should be cool. How did you get started in skateboarding? I came from a bad area in Inglewood and my cousin who lived in the suburbs got me into it. He showed me a skateboard for the first time and a couple of tricks, and I was fascinated with what he could do, especially how he was able to keep the board under him while getting air. He had an extra one and gave it to me and I’d just go outside and practice every day. Through the years, whenever I was bored, I’d get up on my board and try to think of tricks I didn’t know and then continue practicing them until I perfected them. Then I practiced the moves at a real skatepark and have someone film it. I’m always putting up videos on IG for my followers. Fans want to see you skate more than pictures of you going out and partying or hanging out. Nike was like, “Less of those types of posts and more skate ones” since that’s what people know me for, and I totally agree. I like to put up more skate stuff than lifestyle things. Did you ever think that you’d go this far with skateboarding? No, I never saw this happening. When you’re a kid, you see all these skateboarders getting sponsored and you want it, too, but you never really know that it’ll happen for you. I just stuck with it and never thought about getting sponsors that much and just kept practicing and grinding. I think that’s when sponsors come to you and it’s the best way to try and make it your career. Just skate for yourself and for fun and don’t worry about getting sponsors. When you think about sponsors all the time, you stop having fun on your board. My advice to kids these days is just let it come naturally. How did you get your reputation as the happiest skateboarder out there? As a kid, I was always like this. I was always up for anything and just happy all the time. I was blessed to grow up in a good family. My mom wouldn’t let me go out until my homework was done and that kept me on track and out of trouble. I’m just blessed and happy to be here, man. Will you be doing more contests this year? Yeah, I’m preparing for the Dew Tour this summer and then will start Street League next year even though I keep saying that. Like I said, I’m not a competitive person, but I’m getting into them more and more. I’m at the skatepark for a couple of days straight before a competition just doing the same trick over and over again so that I get the consistency down. I also work on my basics and make sure those moves are perfect. Then I try something new because like in any sport, you have to keep it fresh if you want to get better and advance your career. What’s it like to be on Nike’s skate team? Words can’t explain what it’s like to work with one of the biggest companies in the world. It’s great and they really take care of me in every aspect. If I want to go skate somewhere, they come up with a budget for me to do it. Nike 90 | DUB MAGAZINE 2015
does so much for skateboarding and they really support the culture. And their offices in Portland, OR are awesome; I always enjoy trips up there. Any advice for upcoming skaters looking to follow in your footsteps? Stay humble and go after whatever you want to do in life, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it. Always work at what you love and try something different until you accomplish it. Just continue to progress and move forward.

R
&B is making a comeback after years of being shadowed by hip-hop and Ty Dolla $ign is leading the pack. As the go-to guy for R&B hooks and features, Ty (born Tyrone Griffin Jr.) is gearing up for a huge summer before he drops his highly anticipated debut album Free TC. His latest single “Drop That Kitty (feat. Charli XCX and Tinashe) is already slated to be one of summer’s top jams, and he’s going to be touring the world, performing at various summer concerts and festivals. Earlier this year, he was honored by MTV and included in their “Artist To Watch,” lineup for 2015, joining the likes of other up-and-coming acts like Rae Sremmurd, with a yearlong campaign and promotion across the network’s various platforms. “I can’t believe it sometimes; it’s amazing at how great everything is turning out right now,” the 30-year-old L.A. artist says. “It’s incredible the places music has taken me and the opportunities I’ve been given. I’m going to keep on giving it my all and doing the best I can at my craft.” Ty’s been perfecting his techniques for a while now, since helming YG’s 2010 hit “Toot It and Boot It (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)” and has since been an in-demand writer, producer and featured artist. He’s worked with many chart-topping artists since then, including B.o.B, Chris Brown, Trey Songz, and more. But it was his 2013 Beach House EP that really placed him on the musical rap scene as a credible solo artist. With a musician for a father, Ty fell in love with music at an early age and began by

Over the years, he expanded his knowledge of music and learned several instruments, including guitars, drums and keyboards. “I’m a real musician and different from others since I play everything,” he says. “It doesn’t matter what instrument it is, I can do it all. I make beats, sing, write – everything.” And it’s his ability to do it all that makes him such a noteworthy artist whose music is unique and filled with truth.

His album will feature a variety of tracks – from club bangers, to smooth hits, lounge tracks and more. “My heart went into making this album and I went all in, with every song that made it. I’m here to give everybody incredible music.” With a ton of collaborations from the likes of his “homies,” including YG, DJ Mustard, Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa and more, Free TC also has a very personal message for Ty. “My brother is locked up for something he didn’t do, so I need to stack up all the bread I can to get him to hire a good lawyer and get him out of that situation, while still providing fans with good tunes.”
Between a busy tour schedule and trying to help out his brother, Ty isn’t about having a million-dollar garage right now, and is instead trying to build his first old school. “I have a 1964 Chevy Impala that I’m trying to fix up,” he says. “I’ve always loved old school rides and am excited to start building my first one. I want to keep the classic styling of the Impala and just want to update a few things. But I’ll definitely chrome the bottom and add chrome accents.” Since it’s his first build, Ty didn’t know where to start and looked to Mike Agazaryan of Arete MotorSports, who owns the Eleanor-
inspired 1967 Ford Mustang Ty shot with. Like Ty, Agazaryan has a passion for classic cars, with a Mustang his dream ride that he’s always wanted to create. “This build has been my longest and most difficult to date,” the experienced builder notes. “I’ve always wanted that Eleanor Mustang from the movie ‘Gone In 60 Seconds,’ and my dad and I sought out to build one. It took months of hard work and patience since we had to make sure all the parts fit right. There was no reference point we looked to while building it, so we had to do everything from scratch to make sure it was perfect and show quality. I told him that building a custom like this takes patience to make sure it all flows right.”

And Ty made sure to take notes so that he could create a work of art with his own Impala. “Everything about the Mustang catches your eye when you first see it,” he says. “Everything from the paint to the interior, it’s just a really cool car.” As he gears up for a long customization process and a booked summer, Ty isn’t about to do a half-assed job on either to make sure that his Impala and music career are successful. “I’m going hard everyday to be the biggest artist in the world,” he says. “I want to be one of the best there ever was. I’m here to stay and my ability to do it all only enforces that. It’s all good, though, I know I’ll be here for a while doing my own thing, with both cars and music.”

W
hen you grow up with nothing, you have nothing to lose and push that much harder to succeed. Such is the case with pro boxer Abner Mares, who has become a reputable name in the boxing circuit with three world championships on his impressive resume. The 29-year-old has had a total of 31 fights, with 29 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw, and uses that one defeat as a motivational tool to continue to strive for more wins no matter who his opponent is. Hailing from Hawaiian Gardens, CA, the Mexican fighter started out his career fighting in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico and has since then risen to the top thanks to hard work and dedication, always challenging himself to do better for his family and his fans. We caught up with Mares to talk about his golden Benz, his career and what it’s like to be a boxer these days.
When did your interest in cars begin? It definitely came during my boxing career because I grew up with no car. I was always taking the bus. I remember seeing nice cars always passing by while at the bus stop and as a kid, I’d just wonder if one day I’d own one of those nice cars. That was my inspiration – to have a nice car of my own and say I made it. What was your first car and do you have any crazy stories with it? My first car was after I came back from Mexico and it was a 1997 Acura. I had it for about a year and one day took it to a local swap meet. It was stolen that day and I never saw it again.

What was your first car purchase after your first big paycheck? My first nice car was a Yukon, and I had 26” wheels on it. It was the first real nice car I’ve ever owned. Well, thank God I’ve had a few cars since the Yukon like a Bentley, Fisker, Porsche Panamera and others. Why did you choose the Mercedes-Benz S550 and how did you decide to get a gold wrap? What caught my attention to the Benz was the luxury of it – both driving it and being driven. There are times I don’t like to drive and have others drive me. I love to sit in the back seat. It’s a 2015 model and the interior is amazing – It’s so roomy and comfy and makes you feel important. I like to just sit back and relax after a hard day of training. But it’s also really nice to drive. It’s pure luxury inside and out. When people see you driving it, they think of a suit-and-tie-type of guy, but I wanted to change that and wrapped it gold to show the world that it’s also a car for someone like me who has come this far to make something for themselves. Yeah, it’s an eye catcher. Do you have any other mods on it? Other than the wrap, I just laced it up with a nice set of Giovanna Wheels. It doesn’t really need anything else.

What other cars do you have in your garage? I have a BMW 640i Gran Coupe and my wife’s Mercedes-Benz GL450. But I’ve had so many other rides like a Jaguar XF and Range Rover Sport in the past. Are looking to add more? If so, what do you have your eye on? Yeah, I’m waiting for that one big paycheck to buy a Lamborghini Aventador. That’s my dream car.
How did you become interested in boxing? How old were you and what did your family think when you told them you wanted to learn the sport? My family has been supportive because my dad was a professional fighter and my older brother was one, too. And now pretty much my other brothers are boxers as well. There are 11 of us in total and we’re all interested in the sport, so it’s pretty much a family affair. We were all brought up in it. I grew up watching it and was sort of
forced into liking it, but afterward I just loved it and realized I could do something in life with the sport. I was an ex-Olympian and went to Athens, Greece in 2004 to represent for Mexico. That opened the doors for many things in life and I’m nothing but grateful for this sport. I pay it back by training hard and giving fans great fights. What was the journey to become pro like? The journey to becoming not just a professional fighter, but a world champion, has been rough. It’s not just, “Okay, you get the chance at a world title.” No, you have to earn yourself a world title. With me, I started young and was always getting into fights at school. My parents kicked me out of the house and I was sent to Mexico, where I lived for five years, and that’s pretty much where I really became interested in the sport. I made it to the Olympics and was signed by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions here in the States and that was pretty much what started my pro career. I started winning tough fight after fight and earned a world title fight not once or twice, but three times.
Your first professional fight as a pro was against Luis Malave in 2005. How have you evolved since then? Well, like I said, I’ve been a world champion three times and I think I evolved to be a different type of fighter. I’ve not just stuck to one weight class, but have fought in three different weight classes and will soon add a fourth. It’s just been an experience and an exciting ride. There’s so much maturity in this sport and it happens over time. What’s the fourth weight class? I’m looking to move up to Super Featherweight and catch a fourth world title. You’ve fought as a Bantamweight, Super Bantamweight and Featherweight. What’s been the most challenging class to fight in and why? Without a doubt my only defeat. Not just because I lost, but because the aftermath of it all with all the name calling and naysayers on social media. Anyone can type something that’s hurtful and people said some mean things and underestimated me. I’m going to prove people wrong, though. I’m not a three-time world champion because of a coincidence; I earned it because I’m good fighter. That was the toughest part of my career, but in time I’ll prove them wrong.

What are the challenges in fighting in each weight division? It’s challenging because you’re moving up in weight and challenging yourself to fight stronger fighters. The punches get heavier and the risks of getting knocked out or getting really hurt increase. It’s not just about eating a lot and gaining weight; it’s about being ready at the right time and feeling great physically. You have to feel ready to move up in weight class and it’s tough to try and catch a world title because you’re fighting the best in that weight class to win that one title. You’ve also traveled the world for boxing. What’s been the best place to train/fight in and why? Where would you love to fight next? The place I loved the most, without a doubt, is Romania. There are a lot of light skinned folks out there and since I’m on the brown side, people were really captivated by me and loved my fighting style. I’d love to go out there again. What’s the significance of your trademark bandana that you always wear? There’s a lot of significance. Not only am I turning into a warrior once I put that on, but the reason why I put it on is to change into a different Abner. I had a detached retina back in 2008 and the doctor told me I couldn’t fight anymore. But I came back within a year and decided to come back as a changed man and that’s pretty much how the bandana came about. I wanted to catch people’s attention and now people want to see that bandana all the time. Once I put it on, Abner is ready for war. 124 | DUB MAGAZINE 2015
Who has been your toughest opponent to date and why? I think all my fights have been difficult in different ways but I’m going to say that my toughest opponent is myself. It’s easy to became a world champion, but harder to give it up. I always have to challenge myself to continue to work hard to maintain world champion status. It’s not easy and the most difficult fighter will always be me in every fight I undertake. What’s your training program like? Does it differ for each opponent? Well, the schedule is pretty much the same, but training methods are different since every fighter has a different style that I have to prepare for.
It’s usually an early morning run, come back and eat breakfast before I shower and sleep. Then at noon, I’m in the boxing gym sparring and then I’ll take another nap; and by six, I’m either doing leg or upper bodywork. It’s a job and I’m training for eight to 10 weeks. How would you describe your boxing style? What are your strengths as a boxer? What are some things you think you need to improve on? Always trying to improve myself, and as soon as the fight is over I’m watching tapes to see where I went wrong. But my fighting style is “BoxerPuncher.” My advantage is that I’m fast with my hands and my footwork.

What’s been your biggest achievement/ accomplishment to date? It hasn’t been winning three world titles, but being an example for my kids. I’ve showed them what can happen when you don’t give up and keep your dream alive. I think that having two kids and seeing that they are grateful and admirable of what I do is an accomplishment. Who would you love to fight? If you could have one dream fight, who would that be? Dream fight would definitely be Manny Pacquiao. It won’t happen because we’re in different weight classes and he’s getting ready to quit boxing, but he’s such a great fighter. He’s a warrior and combined with my fighting style, I think it would be a perfect matchup.
There’s a lot of talk about you going up against Leo Santa Cruz. What can fans expect from such a fight? Two kids from L.A. battling it out. It’ll be a great fight and I’m ready for it. I think it can be one of the best fights in boxing history! We hear you’re involved in your old community, what exactly do you do? Just being a good example. I grew up in Hawaiian Gardens in Cali and I go back and am involved in the community. I go to schools and talk to the kids about their dreams and how to follow them. It’s good for them to see someone like me who came from nothing make it in life.

“These suckers are 75” wide at the wheel mounting surface and are the burliest axles available on the market today, short of going to military-grade take outs!” Higgs explains. “Obviously the 4” chop top is the part that makes this build over the top, only to be accentuated by the highly illegal red-over-chrome tint!”
A sleek looking brushed titanium finish wrap covers the exterior and includes an embossed Fab Fours logo on the hood to let everyone know who built the insane Jeep. Inside, an ARC Audio system provides the ride’s soundtrack for any off-roading adventures, while Katzkin leather graces the interior, along with black and red Barracuda seats. Since Fab Fours already builds custom trucks and Jeeps for marketing and product testing purposes, they’ve naturally created many partnerships with many aftermarket manufacturers, so finding parts for this unique build wasn’t that difficult. But what did become a challenge throughout the process of the build was getting it done on time for the big Vegas show. Even with a tight deadline, THE LEGEND was ready for SEMA and received tons of attention – both good and bad. 136 | DUB MAGAZINE 2015

“The general public absolutely loves it, even though they don’t really know what it is – they just know it looks awesome,” Higgs says. “Now the off-road community…that’s a different story. Lots of dudes are quick to thumb their nose at anything that is different. And if it’s not the way they would have done it, then it’s clearly lame. ‘The fenders are too big, why waste money chopping a top…yada, yada… This Jeep wasn’t built for that guy and his narrow vision. It was built to make kids and old guys smile from ear to ear and get pictures with it. And to that end, it was an overwhelming success!” THE LEGEND was even featured on Jay Leno’s Garage car-centric web series, as his team deemed the Jeep the most radical vehicle of the SEMA Show. And because Higgs envisioned even more for his out-of-the-ordinary Jeep, he’s since then

built another one – THE LEGEND 2.0WOAH, which blends all the crazy proportions of the first, but addressed all of the performance issues that come with a prototype, including ones that were found while testing its functionality during a week-long rock crawling trip across Colorado on 44” boggers. “My marketing team gave me the kibosh on taking it off-road since they would need it in “show-ready condition” for the next year. That’s where THE LEGEND 2.0WHOA comes in since we had to shut down the naysayers that said she was a trailer queen. T
he Los Angeles stop of our annual DUB Show Tour is always a highly anticipated event in Southern California, with car clubs and fans coming all the way from neighboring states, and even overseas, to relish in all the hot cars, exciting displays, and of course, dope music provided by chart-topping artists. This year’s L.A. stop was no different and the Los Angeles Convention Center was booming with energy on Sunday, March 1, 2015. The Monster Energy Lounge was on and popping with fans lining up early to meet the beautiful Monster Energy Girls and get some refreshing samples of the latest Monster Energy flavors, plus the new DUB Edition Punch. Guests were also able to get up close and personal with Ken Block’s iconic Gymkhana 3 Ford Fiesta and get autographs from a few of the concert’s headliners. Their Monster Energy team also put on a full BMX and skate demo which left showgoers “oohing” and “ahhing” all day! Those who have a passion for all things off-road enjoyed our LFTD & LVLD Off-Road Showcase that displayed the meanestv custom trucks, Jeeps, SUVs and more. The show always offers something for every car taste, including sleek luxury and exotics cars, resto rods, classy lowriders and crazy customs. It was a show for everyone! Since the show was presented by Toyota Camry, a few bold new 2015 DUB Edition Camrys were on display and accompanied by the Toyota Girls and DJ spinning the latest tunes. Performers Rae Sremmurd gave out autographs and fans were even given special VIP entrance when they showed us their Toyota keys! The HarleyDavidson booth displayed their new 2015 bikes that were showcased by their gorgeous HarleyDavidson spokesmodels.

T
he New York International Auto Show never disappoints, with numerous unveilings of new rides, concept cars and more. The Monster Energy DUB Show also called the NYIAS home from April 10-12 inside the Jacob Javits Center. The NYC stop featured loads of customized rides and interactive booths, which translated to an amazing weekend for car enthusiasts. The Monster Energy Lounge featured a few lovely Monster Energy Girls, including Carissa Rosario and Carla Daniela, in addition to new Monster Energy flavor sampling. Tommy “Tiny” Lister, Jr., aka Deebo, also made the cross-country trip with the Monster Energy crew to show NY some love, as well as Ken Block’s infamous Gymkhana 3 Ford Fiesta. UFC fighter Rashad Evans was also on hand taking pictures and signing autographs with the Monster Energy crew. The 2015 Toyota Camrys were on display to give showgoers an idea of what can be done with the new Camry platform, while New York-based hip-hop artist Bodega Bamz came through for a quick meet and greet in the booth. The HarleyDavidson display featured their new 2015 bikes, beautiful Harley Girls and a special contest for fans to win their own Harley of choice. The DUB Developed by Meguiar’s display showcased all the best car cleaning products and provided guests with demos on how to use them. The TIS and Dropstars booth showed off all the latest and greatest wheel styles, while the DUB Edition Audio booth providing some hard-hitting sound!
