he off-roading segment is thriving, growing by leaps and bounds each year. For the 2014 SEMA Show, custom lifted and leveled vehicles were everywhere – from accessorized Jeeps to monstrous trucks and everything in between. These vehicles were equipped with the latest gear to help them tackle the toughest terrains and look good doing it! All of our featured vehicles in this issue were top SEMA builds that caught the attention of everyone at the show. It seems Innovative Autoworks can customize anything. For their project vehicle for SEMA this year, they went over-the-top with their 2014 Dodge Ram 3500 Megacab Dually they nicknamed “Limitless.” No modification was spared to bring “Limitless” to life, with the truck carrying more than $100K in upgraded parts, including a totally one-off frame conversion that takes away two of the Dually’s back wheels. You’ve simply got to see this! Red’s Miami has been working with long-time client and friend Jay Zaleski on all of his custom trucks and totally outdid themselves when they turned his 2014 Ford F-250 FX4 into “Silver Bullet,” which is one of the few lifted trucks in the world to have a set of 26” off-road wheels and tires on it!

There’s a story behind the “Project Hope” Jeep Wrangler JK. The Jeep was built for Tom Buchanan’s dying father, who passed away from brain cancer late last year. As a ride that promotes hope, Tom made sure to stop at nothing to create the ultimate tribute Jeep that would invoke the spirit of his father while raising awareness and funding for cancer research. Finally, there’s “Tomahauk” built by Kenny Hauk of Hauk Designs. The off-road war bird is like a classic WWII fighter plane on four wheels with intricate details and modifications taken from actual WWII aircraft, “Tomahauk” had an overwhelming response when it made its big debut at SEMA. We’re impressed to say the least. Like past issues, we’ve compiled the best and latest in aftermarket accessories to help you decide on parts to create your dream off-roading machine. And we’ve added a new section – Battleground – which has two extreme off-road rides going head-to-head as they battle it out to see who reigns supreme. COMPLETE CUSTOMS has built some impressive off-road vehicles and we still can’t get over their Zombie Walk Jeep Wrangler with its incredible Camoliner Kevlar paint scheme. REBEL OFF ROAD really knows how to give their clients the VIP treatment, creating rides that turns heads and outperforms on the streets and trails. One particular client needed a street-driven rig that would handle the pavement as well as dirt. With an initial design that boasted big wheels and tires, black, white and red accents, as well as an emphasis in performance, the end result was nicknamed Cascade for its beauty and performance. Its Smittybilt exterior protection – which includes XRC front fenders, rear corner guards, body cladding, front bumper and rear bumper, tire carrier and winch – were requested specifically by the owner after they caught his eye at a previous show, while its 24x12 KMC XD Rockstar II wheels peaked his interest after admiring them on other off-road builds. The 40x15.50R24 Toyo Open Country M/T tires were chosen for their tall size and their quiet demeanor on the street as well as their longevity. A Fuel Off-Road Jeep JK grille gives it a unique look, while Rebel Off Road’s Recon coilover conversion kit, along with a Teraflex Long Arm suspension combined with King 2.5x12” coilover shocks with remote reservoir keep the Jeep’s ride smooth and bumpfree on any terrain. For performance, a Magnuson Supercharger, custom Magnuson Tune and a Magnaflow exhaust system all help to let it roar with power.

And to fit those American Force wheels without having them poke out, the crew converted the Dually from four wheels to two in the rear. “We bought the Dually so we wouldn’t have to make custom bed sides, which meant we would only have to build a pair of wider front fenders,” he says. Making it perform like the monster it is, a Hardway Performance ECU Flash and MBRP gold 4” exhaust with over axle dual tip dump MBRP gold boost tubes were used. “Limitless” also gets a breath of fresh air courtesy of an S&B Filters cold air intake system. To match the interior with the exterior, Gefert wanted the dash and door inserts painted green and gold, added a full black suede headliner and went with hand-fabricated seats embroidered with his shop’s logo.

Despite the rear conversion of the Dually it still has a massive footprint and is an imposing truck when you see it in person.

Gefert wanted the truck to bang out some massive sound and didn’t hold anything back when it came to the truck’s system, going with an Audison bit ONE digital processor, two Hertz HDP 4 amps, two Hertz HDP 1 amps, a Hertz HSK 163.4 6.5” 3-way component kit in the front doors/dash and a Hertz HSK 165.4 6.5” 2-way component kit in the rear doors. “I couldn’t be happier the way everything turned out,” he describes. “When the day comes, it will be hard to give this one up since we truly outdid ourselves on this build compared to year’s past. nce Jay Zaleski purchased his first Ford truck, he never looked back and has owned a Ford ever since. But the seasoned car enthusiast from South Florida wasn’t fond of just any old Ford that you’d normally see on highways and always made sure that each of his vehicles were not left in stock form. The professional landscaper of Grass Masters, Inc. first started out with a passion for intricate Lowriders and slowly moved to big trucks after needing something with enough space to fit plants and shrubs he’d get from nurseries for his various clients. Over the years, Zaleski has acquired a variety of trucks including: • • • • • 52

A 2000 Ford F-350 Dually that was lifted on 22.5” Diesel wheels, which was his very first truck A 2004 F-550 flatbed lifted on 22.5” wheels One of the first 2005 F-350 Duallys that was lowered and sat on 24s A 2006 F-350 Dually bagged-out on 24” wheels A 2007 F-350 bagged on 24s

The first 2008 F-350 Dually bagged on 24” Diesel Wheels that were direct bolt-ons back in 2007 The world’s first 2011 F-350 bagged on 26” direct bolt-on Diesel Wheels A 2012 F-550 Flatbed that was lifted on 24s and with 37s that were the perfect ride for any off-roading adventures or for hauling plants on job sites.

But now Jay’s riding around in his 2014 Ford F-250 FX4 nicknamed “Silver Bullet,” which sits on custom-built 26” Diesel wheels. Ready for another game-changing truck, Jay decided he wanted to own the first truck in the world that was lifted and rolling on one-off 26x15 off-road, direct bolt-on Rodder-style Diesel Wheels with a BigLugz pattern (which is actually a big rig simulated pattern) wrapped in 37x13.5R26 Tuff MT tires. And he first got the idea from Frank of Red’s Miami, which was also the shop that worked on all of Jay’s other Fords. To have it ready to display at the 2014 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV, the crew at Red’s busted their tails off for an entire month to get the right

fit with the 26s, and to add a 10” Fabtech lift with 4-link coilover, AMP Research steps, AnzoUSA headlights with HID upgrade and a de-chromed body, including its bumpers, grille logos and other exterior accents. And to provide it with an extra boost of power, it was tuned with an SCT X4 with Xtreme Diesel Tuning custom tune and it sports a one-off mandrel bent 4” exhaust system by the Red’s Miami that was powder coated by the guys at Best Powder Coatings and finished off with a K&N filter kit. Because Jay wanted a clean off-road truck that wasn’t overdone, he kept the modifications simple, but it still caught SEMA attendees’ attention, with showgoers being drawn to its massive wheel and tire setup. After it returned from SEMA, Jay took Silver Bullet out to the region’s famed Everglades where it performed flawlessly in the dirt and mud. As his daily driver, he still tries to take it off pavement as much as possible and it has more than lived up to his expectations. But if Jay’s patterns hold true, we’re sure he’s already looking to the next build... and Red’s Miami will be up for the challenge.

enny Hauk isn’t one to live off of old accolades. Instead, the master fabricator and his Hauk Designs team are always looking toward the future and thinking of new ways to push the limits on their project vehicle. “The thrill for me is in the build, so as soon as I’m done with one, I’m already thinking about the next one,” he admits. His previous Project Phóinīx was an award-winning, traildevouring vehicle that took the off-roading industry by storm, but now the renowned mastermind is back with an entirely new Jeep that’s even more bold and brazen than ever. “Our goal has always been to break new ground and stretch the limits with our off-road builds,” Kenny says, mentioning that Hauk Designs was the first company to install a 24-valve Cummins crate engine into a JK Wrangler. With over eight years of experience building numerous high-powered hot-rod style rock crawlers, the 2010 Jeep JK takes inspiration and pays homage to vintage war planes from WWII and has been christened “Tomahauk.” “Those planes were amazing machines with tons of incredible details. You often see people try to

emulate the style with decals and painted on rivets. Our desire was to build something truly authentic with real rivets and with real vintage airplane parts incorporated into the design.” To perfect the authenticity of its warbird design, Kenny scoured the Internet for pictures of vintage WWII aircraft and studied the markings and cockpit designs on every vehicle that has since then incorporated cues and parts from these fighter planes and bombers. He would even spend days on end rummaging through old crates of antique parts from various sellers in search for the perfect pieces to use on his own creation. With the exterior design fully thought out, he then pinpointed the products that would turn

the JK into a vintage warbird capable of handling any terrain. As Hauk Design’s first fully hydraulic all-wheel steering build, Kenny and his crew heavily relied on their friends Sean Stapley and Matt Hodges from West Texas Off Road to design Redneck Ram hydraulic steering assist system for the JK and the result was “amazing.” Hydraulic steering is nothing new in the off-roading world, but it has recently exploded in popularity among many builders because of its benefit in producing more steering force, which is important for 4x4s like “Tomahauk” with massive 78

tires (44x19.50x17LT Pit Bull Rocker tires and 17” TIS 538 Monster Energy Edition wheels), locker differentials, and the ability to properly control and steer in challenging terrain. If designed correctly, a hydraulic steering system can add to one’s enjoyment of a day on the rocks or dirt. “Many off-road racers choose this setup since it can be adjusted to suit racing or crawling, allowing for better control,” Kenny details. “However, it is not recommended for on-road use since it can be over responsive on pavement.” Other essential modifications that help it tackle the most technical of terrains include: a Rock Krawler suspension and custom long arm system with 3” rear and 3” front stretch and 16” coilovers; Steinjäger front and rear steering arm system; 1-ton Ford Kingpin Dana 60 front axle with Artec Industries axle trusses plus Yukon gears, Grizzly locker, Yukon lockouts and shafts; and 1 ton GM 14-bolt rear axle with Dodge Dana 60 Knuckles with Yukon gears, Grizzly locker, Yukon shafts and Yukon lockouts. To make “Tomahauk” come alive, HID projector headlights provide it with menacing red glowing eyes, while Kenny’s good friends, David and Vanessa from Encline Designs and Vané Pinstriping, did all the hand lettering and airbrushing on the Jeep’s full-aluminum body armor custom-made by River Raider Off Road. Original B-17 Flying Fortress oxygen tanks were also used as fuel tanks. Inside, an original machine gun charging handle from a B-24 bomber allows the driver to shift gears and

custom JAZ Products racing seats were split in half, widened and riveted back together to look like authentic bomber seats - further displaying Kenny’s eye for intricate details in his builds. After finding a vintage WWII radio, Kenny knew he wanted to incorporate it into the build and asked the team at Sounds So-Good Car Audio in Waynesboro, PA to design a sound system around that radio, which now controls the entire system. A few B-24 steering yoke buttons also control volume of the complete MMATS Pro Audio speaker system and track selection on the hidden head unit. With over $100K in modifications, “Tomahauk” took a total of three months to complete, but it was still a race against the clock to complete it on time for its unveiling at the 2014 SEMA Show. “We had an overwhelming response,” Kenny said after its big debut. “It seems to draw people from all ages and backgrounds, but especially those who have actually flown in a vintage aircraft or collect airplane memorabilia from that era.” A huge success at SEMA, Tomahauk is scheduled to be properly tuned and tested on dirt and rocks to see what it’s really capable of at the 2015 Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, UT. “We will have the Jeep completely dialed in so that it can tackle some of the nastiest trails our country has to offer. I must say, it is going to be hard to top this next year.”

ost builds showcase a shop’s ability or depict a builder’s dream ride. But then there are those that not only make you stop and stare, but feel connected to the builder’s story. Tom Buchanan’s Project Hope is one such vehicle. As his first real project car, Tom stopped at nothing to finish this Jeep in honor of his late father, who recently passed away this past December fighting Stage 4 Glioblastoma brain cancer. Originally called “The Build For Buck,” Tom always knew that he’d one day build an offroading vehicle, since it had always been a part of his life. “Growing up in the swampy areas of Texas, there was no shortage of large, lifted trucks and Jeeps,” he describes. “Motocross, Jeeps and trucks were all I knew back then, so it’s something that’s been instilled in me.” The Jeep was initially going to be used by Tom and his dad, to showcase at local meets and play with on local trails, but that all changed after Tom and his family were notified that his dad’s cancer had come back after being in remission. The Jeep was the last thing on his mind until a few month’s into his dad’s treatments when he met someone going through the exact same thing as his father. “Knowing the pain and constant poison being pumped into my father’s body, it amazed me that this little girl I met was always smiling and just the sight of her gave me hope,” Tom remembers. It was at that moment, he wanted to do something to help in some way and that’s when he realized that his simple, everyday Jeep was destined to become the “baddest Jeep around” and do some good at the same time. But before he went to work on Project Hope, he organized his first event last year called Operation Jingle Jeeps, which focused

on spreading some holiday cheer to the cancer patients at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. Within a month he had more than 100 Jeep enthusiasts participating, a corporate sponsor and dozens of donation drop boxes all over Houston. Despite the chaotic weather (wind, rain, tornadoes and a wicked cold front), Tom and his fleet of lit-up Jeeps were given a police escort through the medical center where children who were too sick to go outside lined the windows to get a glance of the parade of vehicles, while visitors and volunteers lined the makeshift parade route cheering and clapping. “It was an awesome experience. I had my Jeep’s top off and had a real life Santa Claus standing out of my Jeep waving to the children. It was the best thing ever!” he vividly recalls. “We ended up donating two large moving vans of clothes and toys to the children in the hospital. It was the best feeling in the world.”

Project Hope not only looks good on the outside, but also provides lots of boom thanks to its DUB Audio system. And the interior has been color-matched to it’s striking blue exterior.

With Operation Jingle Jeeps a success, it was time for Tom to turn his focus to building a Jeep that would not only honor his dying father, but also everyone else fighting against cancer. He spent eight months perfecting every detail to build the “strongest,” most eye-catching Jeep on the road. “I wanted this Jeep to be a symbol of strength and most of all hope,” he adds. He collaborated with KEG Media to turn his ideas into a blueprint of the project, transforming an ordinary Jeep into a vision of hope. Eric Contreras of Power House Custom Cycles in Houston, TX created a bold blue and black masterpiece in paint, while Car Toys installed the

DUB Audio system that incorporates three 12” subwoofers, three 1,000W amps, six 6” and six 4” component speakers with a Jensen head unit controlling it all. The Wild Boar Tanga Fastback gives it an aggressive edge, as well as a meaty set 37x13.50R22 Mark Ma Dakar M/T III tires wrapped around color-matched set of TIS 535 wheels. Power was added via Magnuson supercharger, Yukon gears and a roof rack by RackWorks to fit the Wild Boar top and was masterfully put together by the crew at All Out Offroad Performance in Houston, TX. Although he experienced a few hiccups along the way (one being that Tom continued to use it as a daily driver), all that really mattered was that the entire project was finished in time for his father to see, and luckily it was. And it was also completed just in time for the 2014 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV back in November where it was unveiled in the DUB Garage booth. “The biggest compliments were from some of the bigger names in the off-roading

“I WANTED THIS JEEP TO BE A SYMBOL OF STRENGTH AND MOST OF ALL HOPE.” community that came to check it out,” he details. “They congratulated me on a well-built Jeep, which meant a lot given it was my first real build.” With Project Hope completely finished, it’s now on tour inspiring all who see it and bringing about awareness for those suffering with cancer by being co-branded with the non-profit agency, Cars4Cancer and widely publicized as a cancer tribute vehicle. It will also help raise money for cancer research when the Jeep goes up for sale, with a portion of the proceeds being donated in his father’s name to MD Anderson for brain cancer research. “My only wish was that was that I could have taken dad for a ride, but I settled for a smile and a, “Great job, son.’ I can only hope to be half the man that he was and will make sure he isn’t forgotten. He’ll live on through this Jeep and this story.”

INSTALLATION DONE ON A 2009 JEEP RUBICON. Installation procedure on 2010-15 JK models or those with power mirrors will differ slightly.

DOOR PANEL REMOVAL

step 1

Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove all door handle screws.

step 2

Starting from the bottom, use a flathead screwdriver or trim panel tool to pop off doorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s trim piece.

step 3

Now the door panel is removed.

STOCK MIRROR REMOVAL AND DISASSEMBLY

step 4

Remove glass from mirror housing by prying back the glass toward you until small clips snap away from the housing and then pull up to remove. 98

Use a #40 Torx bit to remove the bolt holding the mirror housing from the base.

step 6

Use a #30 Torx bit to remove the two retaining bolts holding the mirror to the door.

step 7

You can now move the side mirror assembly from the door.

step 8

Remove three (3) #20 Torx screws from the mirror mechanism.

step 9

To separate the base from the mirror housing, tap slightly on the bottom of the assembly.

step 10

You now have the mirror assembly completely separated and ready to install the stock mirror mechanism in the Oracle Off-Road Mirror assembly.

ORACLE LED MIRROR INSTALLATION

step 11

Route the LED wires (and stock mirror power wires, if applicable) through the new LED mirror housing.

step 12

Reinstall the mirror mechanism and tighten down the three (3) #20 Torx screws.

step 13

When assembling the LED housing back together, make sure the wiring doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bind with the mirror mechanism.

UP FIT

Reinstall the #40 Torx screw to the bottom of the base and tighten down.

Using a #3 bit drill a hole on the bottom of the door mirror mount so you can run a wire through the door panel and along the stock wire loom.

Make sure wires do not bind or get snagged with any part of the window mechanism inside the door panel.

step 17

Apply an even amount of pressure to reinstall glass back onto the mirror housing. You will hear clips snap in.

Tighten down mirror assembly to the door and re-install door panel.
