or our fourth installment of LFTD & LVLD, we caught up with industry heavyweight Casey Currie. The off-road racer, team owner and founder of Casey Currie Motorsports comes from a renowned off-road family, Currie Enterprises, but has blazed his own path within the sport, as he focuses on expanding his brand, winning championships and creating unique off-road vehicles that are built tough like his JKRK, aka “Raptor Killer.” SEMA is always a great place to see what’s hot and new in the aftermarket and we’re featuring a few of those builds in this issue. First is Complete Customs who made the most noise at the show with their Jeep JK nicknamed “Snake Bit,” which will forever be remembered as the Jeep that took a bite out of a Liberty Walk Ferrari 458. The Jeep has since then been renamed “Ferrari Killer” and looks just as aggressive as it sounds. A.R.E. is another household name with many award-winning vehicles under their belt and they’ve added another with their “Extreme Sports” 2015 Ford F-150 that took home the Mothers Shine Award and the Ford Project Excellence Award. The truck is built for extreme sports enthusiasts to complement their adventurous lifestyle and all the gear that goes with it. Hostile Wheels and SS Customs wanted a big and bold project vehicle and came up with their “Dia de los Muertos” Ford F-250 that commands attention, with elaborate skulls and murals and its Hostile Exile Wheels. KAO Auto Styling has graced our pages before and now they’re back with their red and white Jeep built for Red Dirt Road Wheels. The shop’s crew

worked night and day to get everything finished and to make sure that this particular Jeep was show ready. SEMA is about being different and Bushwacker did just that with their Jeep JK-8 Trail Rescue Vehicle that sports a special JK-8 conversion that transforms a stock JK into a pickup truck. It also showcases their eyecatching Jeep Flat Style Fender Flares and Trail Armor and several other performance mods and accessories that make it the ultimate rescue vehicle. DUB’s Mobile Electronics Director loved the new styling of the 2015 Toyota Tundra so much that he transformed the front end of his previous model to exactly what he wanted. Check out the new look of his aggressively styled 2012 Tundra. Rockford Fosgate is arguably the biggest name in car audio, and now they’re looking to dominate in powersports country, providing massive sound for your favorite off-road toys. To demonstrate the new focus, they’ve built some impressive UTVs that are loaded with an array of their best speakers, subs, amps and more. 2014 TOYOTA TUNDRA “APHRODITE” Robbie Bryant of KEG Media is a master of creating some of the hottest vehicle renderings, but he’s also put together his own builds that have been in several magazines. Known for the intricate details in his “Head Hunter” 2009 Dodge Ram 1500, he’s since then built himself a slew of customs and even helped out with his wife Keena’s build. Her 2014 Toyota Tundra, dubbed “Aphrodite,” is the latest and greatest in the Bryant stable. Although he did make some suggestions, in the end it was Keena who came up with the overall concept: Lagoon Blue Matte Metallic exterior color and parts, including the one-off Honey Badger bumper from Addictive Desert Designs that was a must for the build.

2014 TOYOTA TUNDRA: THE UNEXPECTED CUSTOM What had started out as a simple project for Benji Pulido soon turned into a complete build six weeks before the 2013 SEMA Show – where it was showcased as one of the first custom and lifted 2014 Toyota Tundras in the world. hanks to the explosion of interest in weekend toys like watercrafts and UTVs, Rockford Fosgate has shifted its focus to provide customers with powersports and marine audio specific equipment, so that they can play and still listen to their favorite tunes. “They want it fast, fun and loud!” says Jake Braaten, a member of Rockford Fosgate’s product development team. In 2012, Rockford Fosgate began partnerships with many SXS (side by side) manufacturers to create equipment for this specific powersports application. “Project RZR” began with two employees of Rockford Fosgate - Braaten and Dan Hunter from their product development team. They tested and evaluated different materials and products that could work in both 2-seat and 4-seat Polaris RZRs. “This was no easy task considering the product has to withstand harsh UV, dirt, mud, sand, snow and any other destructive element you can think of,” Braaten says. Braaten’s 2014 RZR XP4 1000, affectionately called the “Dirt Lab,” started by teaming up with TMW Offroad to begin the customization process from mild to wild with a few additions like a custom roll cage, doors, front and rear bumpers and custom roof. With all of the safety hardware in place, Braaten moved on to a full Rigid

Industries lighting system, focusing on a theme that was meant to light up the sky and the UTV’s undercarriage with the addition of roof, bumper and accent lighting. Some 30x10-14 Kahuna tires with 14x7 LiteLoc wheels were chosen for the overall performance enhancement, and provided the additional 1.5” of ground clearance over the factory tire size to clear some of the larger rocks in the Arizona desert. All performance mods came from long-time leader in SXS performance products Muzzys racing, while creature comforts like seats and billet accessories were provided by Triple X Performance and Axia alloys. But the look wasn’t complete until the addition of a wrap by Wolf Designs. With the looks of the XP4 finished, it was time to make it loud. Braaten chose to use the Punch M2 version of Rockford’s Powersports speaker line to put a combination of 16 midranges and tweeters in custom-designed enclosures as well as integrated into the rear seats. A 10” Power Series subwoofer was favored to fill out the low frequencies and was molded into the front dash for a compact and space-saving fitment. The speakers are powered by three of the ultra-compact Power T400X2ad amplifiers that deliver a total of 1,200W, and is controlled by Rockford Fosgate’s RFXMR5BB Powersports-specific source unit, which handles Bluetooth and iPod control with ease.

Dan Hunter’s 2014 RZR XP 1000 2-seater has more of a “Split Personality” graphics theme created by Brand Smith and Rockford Fosgate designers. This custom designed rig began with a visit to Dragonfire Racing for all the safety and convenience features, in addition to a custom cage, bumpers and doors. Rigid Industries lighting is significant throughout the design and makes it fully capable for all late night activities. Hunter opted for 14” ITP wheels and Bajacross tires to make the stance just right and the upgraded 30

Walker Evans shocks handles all of the suspension needs. Rugged Radio car-to-car communication products were added for multi-vehicle expeditions, so that drivers could still contact each other despite the growl from its upgraded Muzzy exhaust and performance products. After helping build Braaten’s XP4, Hunter selected a pair of Punch M1 Series full-range speakers and a single Prime Series 10” subwoofer, all from Rockford Fosgate’s Powersports line of products for his own RZR XP. With saving weight in mind, Hunter installed dual lightweight Punch BRT amplifiers to power the system. Bluetooth was made available by a separated phone controlled module called the RFBTAUX that works perfectly in the off-road environment. After many hours of research and development Rockford Fosgate’s test sleds have made their mark on the desert landscape and have launched more than 100 products specifically for the offroad enthusiast.

However, the freshly redesigned Ford F-150 presented two major problems at the time: securing a 2015 model before it was available to the public and obtaining aftermarket parts and accessories to put together a SEMA-caliber build in time. Fortunately, A.R.E. was able to partner with some of the biggest names in the industry to help develop their products for the new F-150. Together, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve put together an astonishing display vehicle that took seven months to complete before it was debuted at the 2014 SEMA Show. 64

“We set out to build a truck for the extreme sports enthusiast, whether that be someone that takes a one-day mountain biking trip or a week-long snowboarding excursion,” says Caleb Drennen, A.R.E.’s marketing specialist. “From that idea, the truck grew into what you see today - an all-in-one, geared-up, ready-to-go extreme vehicle which we call the Extreme Sports Ford F-150.” The main highlight of the build is A.R.E.’s ToolMaster HD MX Series Cap fitted with the optional Rigid Industries Light Bar. The cap features an internal skeleton that allows owners to carry more weight on the roof of the cap, as well as having the ability to mount multiple GoPros around the entire truck to capture all the action on any terrain it meets. A 6” Skyjacker Suspension system paired with King Shocks lifted the F-150 to accommodate the new 35” tall Toyo Open Country R/Ts, which were mated to 20” TIS Monster Edition wheels. An adjustable Air Lift Load Lifter was also installed, providing more stability in towing situations.

Extra protection and rugged style comes via front and rear Fab Fours bumpers and Bushwacker fender flares, while the front was fitted with Rigid Industries LED light bars and Plain N Simple Oracle Headlights for optimal lighting needs during night excursions. A Surco Safari Rock Rack Basket with a K2 Cooler allows for added cargo space for any expedition, while even more space is provided by the Truck Vault Lockable Truck Bed Storage Vault. An ARB Fridge Freezer keeps beverages and food nice and cold without ever having to worry about ice.

A bold and bright blue exterior color was chosen, which was custom-painted by Aaron Lynch and matched with a custom interior by Trent’s Trick Upholstery. “With the help of our many great partners, we have built a perfect truck for the extreme sports enthusiast,” says Drennen. “The truck made its debut at the 2014 SEMA show, where it was awarded the Mothers Shine Award and the Ford Project Excellence Award.” Now the award-winning Ford is touring the nation, making stops at various events, including the 2015 X Games in Austin, Texas.

S Customs is a shop that can build anything you dream up, but Owner/President Jeff Davis has a sweet spot for street rods and classic muscle cars. However, for SEMA 2014, the shop decided to step up their game and build something bigger than usual...literally! Since SS Customs’ Vice President Jacob Anderson knew the ins and outs of the lifted truck world, he helped guide Davis with the shop’s first venture into creating a massive lifted build. With the goal to fabricate one of the baddest lifted trucks at the show, the SS Customs crew hit up Robbie Bryant from Keg Media for some added expertise. The choices for which diesel truck to go with was between a Dodge Ram 2500 and a Ford F-250, and the crew decided to go with the Ford based on its overall look that fit better with their initial vision that incorporated a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) theme. “When we were discussing what we wanted to do paint wise for this build, a calavera theme stood out and made the most sense for the overall tough look of the build,” says Anderson. “And 73

since Dia de los Muertos is a day devoted to paying respect to family and friends who have passed away, we thought it would fit perfectly with our goal of doing something different for a truck build.” At first, black/white/greys were the color scheme, but the grey was soon dropped for an eye-catching red that made the airbrushed murals pop. “We gave Erik Contreras from Exile Airbrush the creative freedom to place the skulls where he thought fit best and we were thrilled with what he came up with,” he mentions.

To build a badass truck, the shop knew they needed to add some height and went with a custom powder coated 10”-12” Kelderman Suspension Airride Lift (painted by Thermodyne Powder Coating in Pensacola, FL), which allows the F-250 to tower above its rivals at the largest aftermarket convention in the world. The 24x14 Hostile Exile Wheels are anything but ordinary with its airbrushed red accents that complement the truck’s bespoke airbrushed murals all framed in massive 40x15.50R24 Toyo Open Country M/T tires. “We put a lot of time and effort into this build and it shows,” Anderson mentions. “We didn’t do everything bolt-on and made it a true custom truck. It shows in some of the little details, such as the frame being cleaned up and painted prior

to putting the new suspension on.” The entire project took eight months to complete before it was showcased to the public for the first time inside Hostile Wheels’ SEMA booth, where it received a lot admiring stares and nods of approval. But the road to completion wasn’t without a few challenges, with the biggest one trying to adjust the truck’s bedcover. “The bed cover we have on the truck couldn’t be mounted the way it comes due to the Backbone truck rack. We had to fabricate new brackets to allow us to use both the rack and the bedcover the way we wanted,” Anderson says. “The other big challenge we faced was making sure everything was up to our standards and ready prior to making the cross country journey to SEMA.”

As the biggest build the shop has ever done, Dia de los Muertos is now used as a promo vehicle to show what SS Customs can do. But with all of the elaborate airbrush work, Davis didn’t want to risk ruining the art by testing it out off-road and is more than satisfied by all the admiring glances while rolling on Fort Walton Beach streets. “We have a lot of people come by the shop just because they see it sitting out front. We are very proud of this truck since it was the first time we’ve ever built anything for SEMA,” he explains. And if this Dia de los Muertos Ford F-250 is any indication of future off-road builds, expect to see more monstrous projects from SS Customs!

ndy Canaza is no stranger to modifying cars...afterall, he is our magazine’s Mobile Electronics Director and has helped build countless project vehicles over the years. But after working on other people’s projects, Andy wanted to create his own masterpiece and finally got the chance to turn his already mildly modded 2012 Toyota Tundra into the head turning ride that he wanted but never had the chance to put together. “I always wanted to do something more to my daily driver, but it wasn’t until after we launched LFTD & LVLD that I decided to transform my Tundra into a project vehicle,” Andy mentions. “The truck was already lifted so I knew I had a solid platform to build on, and when I first saw how aggressive the new front end of the 2015 Tundras were I knew instantly that I wanted the same look for my 2012 model.” Since the 2015 Toyota Tundra kept a lot of the same styling cues from before, Andy figured it would be easier to do a front-end conversion instead of having to purchase the new model he admired. Now, came the hard part. Because Andy knew how much work was needed to tackle the conversion, he got some help from Shawn Lucero from Rogue Offroad in Las Vegas, NV. “I’m glad I called my buddy Shawn to come help me knock 83

it out,” he says. “It took us 12 hours to finish the job since we had to make sure everything lined up correctly. The hardest part was aligning the components up so that it all just fit perfectly. Either the grille sat too low or the bumpers weren’t perfectly straight, so it was a tedious task that we really had to take our time on to get just right.” To complete the transformation he fitted Bushwacker fender flares and Fab Fours front and rear bumpers to give it an all around tougher look. He added a Rugged Ridge winch with a Factor 55 ProLink shackle mount and AnzoUSA U-bar projector headlights and L.E.D tail lights. The suspension was set up by Bryan and the crew at Bulletproof Suspension in Mentone, CA, where he installed a 15” Bulletproof suspension system and added the parts Nitro Gears sent over, including some Auburn Gear Limited Slip Differential (LSD), that made a huge difference for Andy’s daily commute. “They really improved the overall driving experience of the Tundra. It handles a lot better and the Nitro gears gave me back the power I lost with my bigger wheel setup. I’m now able to change gears a lot faster than before and it helped out a lot with improved gas mileage as well. And as far as the lift, it really

makes my truck look more aggressive now that it has the new front end. I get to really stand above everyone else on the road.” To keep the look clean and compensate for the huge lift he also installed the retractable AMP Research Power Steps to help him get in and out easily. If the Tundra’s massive height alone doesn’t catch your attention, its 3M matte aluminum vinyl wrap will. While it’s actually not a bright and eye-catching color, it’s not something you see on a daily basis which is what makes it stand out. Andy opted for a fresh set of 22” TIS 535 wheels that were color-matched to the wrap and then perfectly paired with a set of 40” tall Nitto Mud Grapplers. More power comes via a K&N Intake system and a Metal Mulisha Exhaust by Gibson which gives the Tundra a menacing growl. Andy 84

upgraded the interior with creature comforts including a Webasto sunroof and redoing the interior with custom-fitted ALEA Leather. The center console was topped off with the extra large Alpine INE-Z928HD head unit, which has an 8” WVGA screen and features all the infotainment he wanted in a source unit. Boasting more than $45K in aftermarket parts, Andy’s Tundra was unveiled at the 2014 SEMA Show where it was well received by show goers. Now, that he’s finished and satisfied with his build, he’s looking to the future and is considering another truck or a C7 Corvette.

he 2014 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV may have started out like any other year, but it ended with “the crunch heard around the world,” according to Shaun Freilich of Texas-based Complete Customs. Jeep fans may have already heard about what will be one of SEMA’s most talked about incidents in the history of the aftermarket specialty show. For those who aren’t in the know, that crunch Freilich is referring to is the moment his Jeep accidently rear-ended Liberty Walk’s $250K-plus widebody Ferrari 458 near the DUB Live area during the exit parade for the SEMA Cruise. It was a moment that he’ll never forget... Witnessed by many show goers, the crash that happened during the final parade caused a lot of commotion and anger from those who flinched at the damage the Jeep did to the Ferrari. As everyone looked on with dropped jaws and racing hearts, Liberty Walk’s Kato was more than cool about the incident. “I was driving our Aventador in the parade and all of a sudden I heard an ugly noise,” Kato describes. “I immediately looked behind me and realized that a Wrangler had crashed into our 458. I could hear that LB fans weren’t happy about it and they didn’t hide their anger toward the driver of the Wrangler. Without any exchange of words, it was clear that the driver was panicking. But I didn’t get mad because anything can be fixed and nobody got hurt.” Although the 458 did have substantial damage, the 2014 Wrangler Unlimited dubbed “Snake Bit” (and now called “Ferrari Killer”) was in tip-top shape, which was expected from a custom that’s built to take a beating, from a shop that’s become a household name in the custom off-road industry. But things were anything

but easy throughout the build. Challenges kept hitting Freilich and his team every step of the way. First, two weeks before SEMA, the main theme of the project had to be entirely changed and then while transporting it to the show, the Jeep was damaged to the point that it wasn’t going to be driveable. But luckily, Bryan from Bulletproof Suspension saved the day and had some parts sent overnight, so that it could at least drive into SEMA. But at the show, the Jeep and its trailer wouldn’t fit inside the booth, so the whole project had to be placed in a different location. Then to top it all off, it took a bite out of a Ferrari, which made for a stressful and exciting SEMA show for Freilich and his Complete Customs team. “With this particular build, we knew that we wanted to top last year’s Zombie Walk Jeep,” Freilich says. “After seeing people’s reactions to it and talking to them at last year’s SEMA Show, I think we came close to pulling it off. We built a

The wreck was unfortunate and I hated that it happened to such an awesome car, but Kato from Liberty Walk was a stand up guy and joked about it.” Since then, the Ferrari has been repaired and is back in the show scene while the “Ferrari Killer” is back home in Texas doing its own stint on the show circuit.

asey Currie might come from a well known family in the off-road industry, but he’s not just living up to his family’s legacy; he’s carving his own path and leaving everyone else in the dust - literally. Racing dirt bikes at 5 and off-road race trucks by the time he was 16, Currie has built a career playing in the dirt, racing Jeeps, trucks and more, while still building some brawny off-road customs. He was one of the youngest team owners/drivers on the CORR circuit and has raced in the TORC series, running the Pro Light 2WD Truck class. His off-road accolades include everything from JeepSpeed class wins in the MDR series to podium finishes in SCORE. He’s currently bringing the heat in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (LOORRS) and gearing up for a winning season. We caught up with Currie to talk about his latest custom Jeep, racing and life as a businessman. First off, thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk to us. Tell us about this beast on the cover, the JKRK (JK Raptor Killer). Why did you build it this way and what was the purpose?

Thank you for taking time to come out! I love to think outside the box. I don’t like to do things the normal way and always want it to be top of the line. On this build, I wanted to build the first Jeep JK with A-arms in the front. I also wanted it to be fast, so I put an LSX 454 in it with 620 hp. I ride dirt bikes and mountain bikes, so I wanted a place for my bikes and gear. My intentions for the build was to go faster and further than all my friends. How did it do out in Moab? Incredible! I cannot even believe that out of the box, the JKRK worked outstanding. I took it on Hell’s Revenge, which is a moderate trail. Once we finished, I decided it needed more and went for the toughest trail in Moab, Pritchett Canyon. The trail is known for causing serious damage and a lot broken Jeeps. I drove the JKRK through the trail with no damage and no close calls. The A-arms and 4-Link give the Jeep a great ride along with the Bilstein Shocks. Now I can say the Jeep is truly a “Raptor Killer.” No Raptor could ever accomplish that trail without getting destroyed.

It pushes out a lot of power through the LSX motor, how easy or how difficult is it to drive? The motor is an LSX dyno tuned by Redline Performance in Anaheim, CA. It is tuned for easy driveability. But when you stand on the gas hard, it will smoke the tires in all four gears. Stoney Transmissions built me a 4L80 tranny, with all the best parts and Dynamic Converters lined me up with the perfect stall converter.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s your favorite part of the JKRK? Honestly, everything about it. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s truly my dream Jeep. The guys at my shop did an outstanding job. We have a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this build. Almost every part of the Jeep was custombuilt. No one had answers or parts, so we had to build everything. Will it ever compete head to head against a Raptor anytime soon? Absolutely. I would love to take the JKRK and a Raptor to Baja and to Moab and do a true comparison. Can something like the JKRK be easily bought? Not as of now, but the team and I are working on a platform that will make the parts available to the public. I want everyone to enjoy.

RACING Lets talk about your racing career. Obviously, you grew up in dirt sports. When and how did you realize that you wanted to make it a career? In college I started a dirt bike shop and it was doing very well, so I made the decision to devote myself to racing moto. After one year of racing pro Supermoto and ranking 5th in the AMA, I decided I wanted to race trucks. I met some industry people at Nissan and they loved my personality and, honestly, from there the snowball was created and it has never stopped rolling down the hill. Growing up, who inspired you to race? Robby Gordon was always the fastest man on the planet, and I liked the way he went about things, so I wanted to race like him. Also, my dad was my biggest inspiration. He always pushes me to be the best and has guided me every step of the way.

Out of all of the different types of racing you have competed in, which has been the most challenging and why? Short course is probably the most challenging because of how high the competition level is. The King of the Hammers, though, brings an aspect to racing that I feel only a few drivers in the world can do at a top-level pace, and I love that challenge and race. The 2015 Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series began on March 20 and you had a solid start to the season. What’s your team’s game plan to keep the momentum going to get a crack at the championship this year? This year we have made some changes internally with my team. We have part of my team working

on the race truck full-time - testing, prepping and tuning. Trad Ronfeldt (Racing Division, Currie Racing) is leading up that team and it makes it nice that my race program is seeing 100% effort all the time. We are going to every race like it’s the last and going for wins. The team and truck are clicking right now, so it’s going to be an exciting year. BUSINESS When you founded Casey Currie Motorsports in 2007, what did you envision for the company and how does it currently live up to that vision? When I started racing, I drove for another team. After that year, I felt I could do it better, so I started CCM. It has evolved a lot. In the past couple years we have won championships, world

championships, along with building exotic race trucks and Jeeps. Oren Anderson (Jeep Division, Currie Racing) is my other guy who helps keep the focus on the Jeeps. We are going to almost 30 Jeep events this year. It’s a wide-open shop, and we never stop moving forward. The company is growing every year and I feel very blessed to be where I’m at. What has been your biggest achievement with Casey Currie Motorsports? My biggest achievement would be winning championships. It means everything went right all year long. Also, I feel my Jeep program is another achievement. We have built some of the nicest and most insane Jeeps in the world. Being a team owner and racer in short course, how do you balance the two? Which responsibility is harder and why? Team owner is stressful and has its lows and highs. But when you stand on top of the podium, it’s an even bigger achievement knowing that everything your team did was correct. We build all of our trucks in house, so it’s a huge undertaking. Driving is fun for me. I love challenges, and I love being under pressure. It takes a great team of guys to make everything be smooth with driving and owning the team. How has coming from the legendary Currie Enterprises family prepared you for life outside from racing? My family is crazy! My uncles and dad push themselves to be the best every day. I feel their company is successful because they only work for the best and they won’t take anything else. I know that has groomed me to become the same way. They can be very hard on me at times. But I find that when I’m under pressure, I succeed more because I have a family that pushes me to be the best I can. What was the best advice you received from them that you could pass along to your fans? Family is always No. 1! If you loose your family over racing or a business, you have already lost. Never give up and always work to be the best. Challenge yourselves every day.

Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve recently become a father, how has that changed your life? Best thing that has ever happened to me! My son is one and he is the highlight of every day. He makes me feel so blessed. Lastly, do you have any words to all your fans? Hammerdown and make every day count!

he Jeep Wrangler has risen to become a staple in the Axial Racing lineup and the SCX10 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited C/R Edition is the result of a collaboration between Axial and Casey Currie. Just like its reallife counterpart, the RTR Jeep can handle its own on dirt, mud, rocks and more thanks to it 4-Link rear suspension that’s optimized to reduce axle steer and torque twist, as well as its durable axles that are far superior than the competition and will stand up to some severe punishment. Its 27T Motor provides massive power for high-speed trail runs or powering over obstacles, while the realistic high-strength c-channel chassis frame is made from durable steel and realistic shock hoops, with multiple shock mounting positions, for total suspension adjustability. Other features of the 1/10 scale RTR is 1.9 BFGoodrich Krawler T/A KX Tires, Poison Spyder, a Rock Brawler bumper and Crusher flares, rear bumper with swing out crawler and an array of Rigid Industries Light bars, including their 50” E-Series roof mounted light bar and a pair of Rigid Dually lights. he popularity of off-roading has boosted the number of weekend warriors that hit the trails every chance they get. And with so many vehicles out there wheeling, Bushwacker thought it would be cool to create a special Trail Rescue rig just in case any of these rides needed an extra hand maneuvering out of a sticky situation.

Known for creating notable truck and Jeep builds throughout the company’s 48-year history, the Bushwacker Jeep JK-8 Trail Rescue vehicle was unveiled at the 2013 SEMA Show as a way to showcase their Jeep Flat Style Fender Flares and Trail Armor. And because of the prominence of the Jeep as a project vehicle, Bushwacker wanted to be unique and decided to go with the JK-8 conversion, converting the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited into a pickup. “The conversion is eye-catching and you still have the awesome capability of a Jeep Wrangler, mentions Andy Lilienthal, Bushwacker’s Public Relations Manager. “It was a perfect combination of form and function for us since you don’t see them all the time and there’s a huge aftermarket with a lot of potential to make a unique, adventure [Jeep].” 145

To live up to its rescue duties various mods were added such as an on-board air tank for airing up flat tires, generator for electricity, winch for recovery and all the auxiliary lighting for increased off-road visibility and in case a rescue occurred at night. “The rig had to be capable of getting a stuck truck, so we lifted it and added larger tires, rock

sliders, a snorkel and a roof rack so that it could carry additional gear if needed.” The company’s fender flares not only add to it’s rugged good looks, but provides the vehicle with extra tire clearance. And to make its presence known, an MBRP exhaust system lets it roar with power. “We custom-painted the fender flare edges to match the vehicle and, of course, the custom topographical map graphics give it a cool, offroad, overland style,” Lilienthal says. “Plus the aforementioned soft top looks great. Add the roof rack, lights and various accessories and it just became a one-of-a-kind rig. It makes you stop and go, ‘Wait, is that a Jeep?’” And the response has been great since it was unveiled and has travelled to numerous off-roading events. “When we took it to the Jeep Jamboree in Ouray, Colorado last September, people loved it,” Lilienthal adds. “It’s unique, different, functional and capable - all the things we wanted in an off-road vehicle. It’s a real attention grabber and it’s a build that’s ‘just right’ - not too crazy, but when you see it, you can tell this isn’t just a regular Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.”

AO Auto Styling has been building custom vehicles in Sin City since 1989, so they know a thing or two about what makes a ride stop you in your tracks and gawk at its beauty. When the Jeep Wrangler JK first dropped back in 2007, they knew that they now had an amazing platform for off-road builds that would challenge their customization skills and creativity. “They have become one of our most popular vehicles that we upfit,” mentions Joel Baker, President of KAO Auto Styling. “Prior to Jeeps, we

were very big in Hummers. Now there is never a day that we don’t have at least two Jeeps in the shop being worked on.” Over the years, Jeeps have become the hottest off-road vehicle at SEMA Show, with KAO actually modifying seven different Jeeps for the 2014 SEMA Show in their hometown of Las Vegas, NV. “Each Jeep had a different style and theme to it, with this particular red and white JK built for Red Dirt Road Wheels. We also created a custom ATV with matching wheels to complement it.” 154

vehicle until I get a design that excites me.” Then, the fun starts as the whole shop starts to brainstorm ideas on how to create the most unique vehicle possible. “In the beginning, no one really liked the red and white idea, and everyone thought that the white wheels were a mistake, but as it got further and further along, it turned out to be a shop favorite!” “As weird as it sounds, we were really excited about the tires. Last year was the debut for the

Even though Red Dirt Road Wheels was behind the build, the shop didn’t let them see the Jeep until they were completely finished building it, despite describing what was being done throughout the duration of the project. “We told them to trust us and that they would get a lot of bang for their buck, as well as a great response at the show.” KAO lived up to their claim and delivered a unique and head-turning JK to the SEMA Show. The foundation of the build were the 20” RDR RD01 wheels with 37” tall Toyo Open Country R/Ts, and complemented with a BDS Suspension lift kit, Borla exhaust system and a slew of other top parts and accessories. Originally, the Jeep was supposed to be all black with red accents, but it looked too common for Baker and his team. They eventually decided to strip and powder coat the wheels white and also opted to paint the Jeep and accessories to flow with the design that Baker came up with. “Normally, I’ll sit with a vehicle for a few hours prior to a build and walk around it over and over again, while drawing different designs. I’ll sometimes also lay pinstripe tape all over the 156

new Toyo Open Country R/T tires, and they are an awesome tire for mud, dirt, snow or whatever you want to drive on. We were really hyped to be one of the first to get a set of the new tires to pair with the RDR wheels on this Jeep. We also went a bit crazy with the lighting on the JEEP with LED, HID and Halogen lights from KC Hilites, which made all our night testing excursions a breeze!” No build is really without its challenges and the fact that the shop had to complete 38 one-off

rides for the 2014 SEMA Show put some pressure on the crew to get the Jeep done on time and looking it’s best. “We had a total of 45 days to build all 38 vehicles, so everyone in the shop worked non-stop, seven days a week with long hours to get everything done on time. We were actually at the show the day before it opened until 4 a.m. putting finishing touches on the Jeep since we got some last minute parts. There’s a ton of blood, sweat and tears in this build.” KAO also did six other Jeep builds for last year’s SEMA show and took all seven of them out to the desert right after the show to test out their work and to “beat the crap out of them in the dirt and sand.” As one of the Jeeps was getting photographed, the others were being piloted by a different KAO employee. “We went on a mad dash all through the desert, chasing this red and white Jeep,” Baker describes. “It started as a little game of follow the leader and turned into a crazy game of chicken. We even had one guy in a Jeep filming the fun, which made for some great video footage. Other than one muffler flying off, all seven of our Jeeps did spectacular out there!”

he 2015 Polaris RZR Mint 400 Presented by General Tire, desert race kicked off on March 11, 2015 in Sin City, and started with the always exciting 4 Wheels Parts parade that included over a 100 race vehicles cruising down the infamous Vegas Strip. The parade was led by this year’s Grand Marshall and off-road racing legend Larry Ragland in his iconic Class 1 car. The next day was all business at the event’s

Mint 400 Method Wheels Time Trials, where racers competed to see who would start first at one of the toughest off-road races in America, with Dale Dondel achieving the fastest lap time of the day and walking away with $5,000 cash. After the qualifiers were done, it was time for Rugged Radios Meet & Greet, where fans got autographs from their favorite racers, such as Steve Strobel, Jerry Zaiden and Jason Coleman. A new Miss Mint was crowned, with the beautiful Amy Scott of Solana Beach, CA representing The Mint 400 throughout the year. The final event for the day was the KMC Wheels Pit Crew Challenge Presented by Mystik Lubricants which has become a staple event each year at The Mint 400. It’s a chance for pit teams to showcase their speed and skill as well as get a chance to win some great prizes.

On Friday, March 13, 2015 teams paraded their race vehicles down Fremont Street for their technical inspection. Saturday was race day, as racers filled the Primm Valley Casino Resort and lined the infield at Buffalo Bill’s Casino. Everything from vintage and stock bug classes to popular UTVs and everything in between participated in the race. The winner of the mornings three-lap race was Roger Starkey in his single-seat Class 1000 car. During the two-day race, the overall first place finisher was Justin Lofton, with Robby Gordon taking second and Rob MacCachren coming in third. Fox Shox awarded the overall winner $10K in prize money. A rough and challenging section of The Mint 400 race was also designated the “Fox Proving Ground,” which is known by racers as being extremely difficult to ride, especially at high speeds. The Mint 400 was created by Norm Johnson in 1967, which was, at first, a publicity event to promote the The Mint Hotel in Las Vegas. The race continues to bring together competitors from across the nation to test their skills and vehicles against rough terrain and fierce racers and has become known as The Great American Desert Race. The Mint was featured in Hunter S. Thompson’s novel “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” as well as later in the cult classic film by the same name.
