t’s crunch time for many since the 2015 SEMA Show is literally around the corner. Right now hundreds of shops and customizers are scrambling to get last minute parts and sponsors to get ready to debut their work at the largest aftermarket show in the world. Yes, it’s a grind, but the results make the sleepless nights well worth it. A few of the rides in this issue already saw their grand unveilings at last year’s SEMA show. Tim Grachen’s “Project Silver Bullet” Toyota Tundra will be making it’s third appearance at the show. This time around, he upped the ante and built the ultimate off-road long-travel suspension truck and more. Usually, you don’t picture a dealership as a customization shop, but Sarasota Ford is changing that and are churning out one-off builds that rival that of the top dedicated custom shops across the nation. Their “Copper 250” will be displayed at this year’s show and is a testament to their craftsmanship. Fab Fours is always pushing the design envelope, especially with their over-the-top build of “THE LEGEND”. Now they’re back with an entirely new and equally insane “LEGEND 2.WHOA.” We’re looking forward to the crowd reaction to this one at SEMA.

Keefer Winn Kustoms is a fairly new name, but they’ve already proved that they can hold their own among the best of them. They’re gearing up to show off their skills and we’ve got the scoop on what makes them the shop to watch in 2016. If you’re at this year’s show, you won’t be able to miss Addison Guerra’s Ford F-250 “2DANKK” thanks to its massive lift and orange accents that can be seen a mile away. It all started with the huge lift and everything else just fell into place afterwards. Coy Balusek is no stranger to SEMA builds. Last year, he flaunted his 2014 Jeep Wrangler JK Rubicon, aka “Ripper,” in N-Fab’s booth. Dressed up by Complete Customs, the Jeep not only looks tough, but can easily maneuver through any trail you throw at it. Many builders like to take inspiration from the past and the Omix-ADA’s 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon “Kilroy” is one such vehicle that integrates nostalgic details. It pays homage to the iconic graffiti “Kilroy Was Here,” drawn on walls throughout the world by American G.I.s during World War II, and is a tribute to the legendary Jeeps that aided G.I.s throughout the war. Jordan Muesse of Premier Offroad and Performance created a set of “His & Hers” vehicles for his 2014 SEMA builds. The 2013

Jeep Wrangler is his gal’s, while the 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 Laramie is his, but both are dressed in a matching purple color scheme and complementary modifications. After buying a customized ride from a shop, Steve Cleary wasn’t completely satisfied with not having done the customizations himself and sought to build the Jeep of his dreams with his son. During his build, he realized the opportunity with building custom Jeeps and started Celebrity Jeeps in Dallas, TX with his son. Now they’re building custom-order Jeeps that are as stunning as his own. When the factory doesn’t offer long bed Ram 3500 Mega Cab Dually trucks you make one. And that’s just what Jay did with the help of TS Designs. Check out his long bed beast and how he did it. ONE GLANCE at the four-wheeled machine and you’re both intrigued and confused, scratching your head as you try to figure out what the hell it is. taff sergeant Richard White has been in the Army for 12 years and has served three tours of duty during his enlistment. Since being around off-road vehicles while in the service, he’s always had an appreciation for such machinery that could traverse deserts and more. It’s these types of vehicles that he spend months training in and some have even protected him in hostile territory. “Through my years in the military and the action I have seen, I have always felt comfortable and at home in an up-armored vehicle, so a Jeep was kind of my of way of getting that peace of mind back, especially dealing with Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) while driving,” he confesses. “As everyone knows, you don’t join the military to get rich, so as long as it was a 4-door, 4-wheel drive Jeep, I didn’t care about any other bells and whistles, especially since I’d be able to build it however I wanted and not have to spend the extra $30K on one that was already built.” With no initial design in mind, White knew it would be named “RAWDAWG” after his call sign from his first unit in the military. He started with a blank canvas and built his own armored Jeep based on parts he saw his buddies use on their own builds, opting for pieces and parts he liked and going back to the drawing board to 28

research others when specific ones didn’t fit his needs or catch his eye. “I didn’t want to be that guy that spent double the money just so I could have something to put on,” he mentions. “I took my time, did my research and saved up many Christmases, birthdays, anniversaries and tax refund checks that would go towards the Jeep.” To make his Jeep similar to armored vehicles he’s used to in the military, White used Poison Spyder armor on the Jeep, including their hood, JK Tramp Stamp and steel Rocker Knockers. He also added Rugged Ridge tube doors, TREX light grille, Spider WebShade, Olympic 4x4 Rear Smuggler Winch Bumper with tire carrier and JCR JK Mauler front bumper and their front skid plates all add to RAWDAWG’s toughness. Adding power was big thing for White so forced induction was in order. He chose to recruit a few of his Army buddies and install a Magnuson Supercharger. “We spent 13 hours putting it in by ourselves, with no real technical training behind us,” he laughs. Since the Jeep’s weight increased due to the extra mods, White felt it and upgraded to 4.56 gears because it wasn’t accelerating on hills. “With the upgraded gears and supercharger, she can go anywhere now!” he says. His other favorite feature is the PowerBass stereo system that lets him chill out to his favorite tunes when he’s out. Although he thought about tackling it himself, he left it up to the professionals for the installation. As of now, White has a total of around $70K invested into his prized ride and is satisfied with the final product. But, he does admit he’ll be adding a few things here and there to take RAWDAWG to the next level. “Every time I install something I take it off-roading to get a good idea if what I have 29

added will take the punishment of off-roading, and I haven’t had any issues with anything yet.” Since unveiling RAWDAWG at the Extreme Dimensions open house in Fullerton, CA, he’s received praise from the off-road community, especially since it took home first place in the off-road category. “I’m constantly getting asked wherever I go for pictures with the Jeep, I gladly oblige since I see the wow factor in their eyes and

it means all the hard work has been paying off,” he mentions. “This is my first build of my own vehicle and I’ve poured a lot of blood, sweat and tears into her along with my battle buddies and Projekt Cars. With so many things going on in the world - spending the last 12 years of my life in the Army - being able to turn wrenches and get dirty gives me a purpose that I had lost due to dealing with PTSD.”

hen you want a custom truck, you find the best customization shop in town or ask a buddy for referrals. You don’t walk into a dealership, buy a truck and ask them to lift it right then and there…unless you buy it from Sarasota Ford in Sarasota, FL. The dealership not only sells some of the most coveted trucks around, but will also lift it for you! “We have been lifting trucks with BDS lift kits for about three years now,” mentions Kevin Wisneski, Aftermarket Manager of Sarasota Ford and their 707 Performance division. “We became one of the first dealerships in Florida to offer lifted trucks with factory warranties.” 50

And they’ve recently expanded their aftermarket offerings to include a number of services, ranging from the simple painting of emblems and taillights, color-matching wheels to complete builds with motor and suspension work . “We provide things to give customers that custom truck look that’s ready for the road right after they buy it. We’re all about the ‘less is more’ look, and work with companies that manufacture quality products and stick behind them with warranties.” Last year, they maxed out their customizing skills, creating fully built 2014 Ford Raptors -

adding modifications like wraps, bumpers, superchargers, lifts and the whole nine yards creating $100k Raptors that were all sold within a few months. Continuing to push the envelope on their customizing repertoire, they teamed up with BDS Suspension for their latest project, which was to build a daily driver that could easily moonlight as a show truck on the weekends. “We wanted to make a statement to show that we could build a rig this massive and awesome and still have a warranty-friendly truck that a customer could bring to the dealership for normal repairs or maintenance,” Wisneski describes. “Our dealership - and 707 Performance (which is myself, my partner Amada Reeves and and our general manager Ian Parisi) can turn out

custom trucks that rival some of the big name shops and this was the truck that would let the world know that.” In order to make the statement, they decided to go big and chose a Ford F-250 over a Raptor or F-150. BDS Suspension supplied them with a dual shock hoop, Fox Shocks 8” lift that was stretched to 10” for added height. But now that it’s going to be displayed at this year’s SEMA Show, the suspension is being upgraded to the coilover kit BDS will debut at the show. FIBERWERX wide front fenders were chosen for extra clearance and a more aggressive look, while their bedside allowed the team at Sarasota Ford to fit Raptor taillights in. “We realized that we were now building a Raptor-esque F-250

that would look really bold and have a solid suspension to go with it,” Wisneski says. plainANsimple custom headlights with Rigid Industries Dually LED cubes, Addictive Desert Designs Honey Badger front and rear bumpers, and a Royalty Core grille add to its muscular exterior, while SRQ Customs, came on board with Sony to do a custom stereo system install. Adding to the truck’s performance are an AIRAID intake and MBRP Inc. exhaust system with black 8” Turndown Exhaust Tip. Setting off its towering stance is a set of 22x12 American Force Ambush Wheels custom painted tuxedo black and copper paired with 40x15.50R22 Toyo Open Country M/T tires. Every part added to the truck was either painted tuxedo black or copper, even the windshield cowl. “The attention to detail we did was second to none and I’m really proud of that,” he confesses. “Having gone to SEMA, I’ve seen some crazy trucks and how far people really go to build. This one is built just right without getting 52

too wild.” When the truck was done, Carter Reed (BDS Suspension’s media relations) actually flew out to Sarasota to check out the finished product. After a quick impromptu photo shoot and a few postings on social media, Wisneski and his crew at the dealership had an influx of people coming out just to see the truck and get more info on the builders behind the clean build. The public really got to feast their eyes on the truck at the dealership’s massive grand re-opening that also featured a new, modernized dealership equipped with movie theater massage chairs, a café and other luxury amenities for its clients. It’s also been down to the Spring Break Nationals in Daytona Beach for Sony’s Sound Competition, where Wisneski says it drew a huge crowd and could be heard from a mile away. And it’ll soon be shown off at this year’s 2015 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV before it’s put up for sale and Wisneski starts brainstorming his next big project. “We lived in a comfort zone of just doing lifts, wheels and tires; maybe some minor paint work,” he explains. “So this was a huge thing and definitely a learning experience. We learned that it takes minor details to really make an awesome build!” 54

ay may be more of a self-proclaimed fishing addict rather than being a hardcore auto enthusiast. But thanks to his good friend Topo, aka The Widebody King, of TS Designs, he’s caught the customizing bug and has created a feature-worthy build on his first try. After having seen Topo’s own personal stretched Ram 3500 Mega Cab, Jay decided he needed his own show-worthy beast and went out to buy one. “The build wasn’t even going to happen,” he says. “I just wanted a truck to tow my boat on the weekends to the dock and back home. I chose the Mega Cab after seeing Topo’s stretched Mega Cab Dually pulling 3-4 cars like nothing and decided it was the perfect truck for my weekend fishing trips.” To get a Mega Cab like Topo’s (with an 8’ bed), he shipped his truck to LongbedMyTruck out in Salt Lake City, UT, who extended the driveline from the standard 6’ bed to 8’. But unlike Topo’s

own Mega Cab that’s rimmed up with 26s, Jay decided he wanted to lift it. “I wanted it lifted with the ‘clean but functional’ look and not overly done. I wanted to pull my boat to the docks and look good while towing them.” Since he didn’t know much about customizing trucks, he did some research on the web to see what other builds were out there. “I had been to the SEMA Show back in 2013 and 2014, but I never saw a Mega Cab lifted, stretched and all done up. The build started with an 8” BDS long-arm suspension, then the 24” Forgiato wheels wrapped in 37x13.50R24 Toyo Open Country M/T tires were chosen. Since I wanted an aggressive look, I got an aftermarket hood with the scoop and then the bumpers, but there was still something missing to me,” Jay describes. “Topo had Lue AWC Grills make me

Some parts would be backordered, and I’m not kidding you, it would be months before I got it. and he still hasn’t been able to drive it. “There were always a few changes here and there during the build, so as of now she’s at Outlaw Offroad in Santa Ana, CA, getting a King Shocks coilover upgrade, with the bypass instead of the springs, and a double shock setup. Topo and his crew were the ones that added the chrome to the suspension, and he helped me get the wheels and tires and installed the Fusion bumpers and Lue AWC Grills grille.” Most of the products for the build came out of Jay’s pocket since he didn’t go out and look for sponsorships, which is something he hopes to do for any future builds. “Looking at it, I’m satisfied with the outcome and the journey from start to finish. ddison Guerra’s Ford F-250 can never be missed thanks to its mighty 3rd Coast Suspension with Accuair air system that has the ability to lift the truck from 8”-16” with the control of a touch pad. It can be spotted anywhere hovering above the crowd of mediocre vehicles on any highway, parking lot or street which is exactly what Guerra was going for. With his design process based around the lift (which was installed by B&C Off-Road in Pasadena, TX), Guerra knew that once it was in place, every other modification needed to be in tune, so that they all combined and made one massive statement.

Nicknamed “2DANKK,” Guerra chose the F-250 as the truck for his project because he loved the body style and the “luxury feel of the interior of the Lariat model,” in addition to the sound of the exhaust system. With the lift already chosen, it was time to pick a color scheme that would magnify the build’s towering stance, and the orange/grey combination was selected. “My wife helped choose the unique color scheme, and I ran with it,” Guerra mentions. “There aren’t any famous gray and orange trucks that have been built, so I was glad that she came up with this color combo to set the truck apart from the rest. My wife also helped name the truck, so that it would have a unique name for it to be known by.”

Although the build was centered around the massive lift, it’s the unique wrap design by ECD Customs that Guerra notes as one of the biggest highlights. “It was installed by Tyler Wrap Company in Flint, TX and SynFX in Tyler, TX. This design attracts everybody’s eyes due to the triangle pattern, and the orange highlights that are in the wrap,” he says. “Another highlight are the Specialty Forged Wheels (powdercoated and pinstriped by Pat’s Paint Werks in Webster, TX) that are mated to Toyo’s Open Country M/T tires. These wheels have a crazy design, and they are huge! They cannot be missed rolling down the road. The wheel quality is out of this world, and the styles that are available are unmatched.”

ECD Customs also created the wrap for the Fox Shocks, while powdercoated ShowTime Metal Works (STMW) front and rear bumpers were a perfect fit with the design of his truck. Two Rigid Industries 40” combo light bars were added to the front bumper, and two 6” light bars adorn the rear bumper. There are four rock lights that light up the truck underneath to highlight the one-off suspension and the rest of undercarriage. To amplify its presence, a FLO~PRO exhaust was chosen, and a Torque Technologies DBF Delete T1 Tuner ups the horsepower and torque of the F-250.

Completing all the work for Guerra was Maxxed Performance in Baytown, TX. “I would not have been able to complete this build if they didn’t help,” he confesses. “After being let down by a previous shop I was working with, I frantically called Max Brill two weeks before SEMA 2014 with a long list of items that I needed done in order for me to be able to take my truck to the show. He instantly made me feel like family and everything was done three days later.” According to Guerra, the truck is always the center of attention and he usually gets a slew of compliments everywhere he goes. “It is crazy 76

the amount of pictures and videos that people take as I drive down the road or stop somewhere. Everybody loves seeing the truck lower when I pull up somewhere, and lift back up when I leave. When I was a freshman in college I saw a guy with a lifted black Duramax. I went up to him and asked him what size lift he had. His response was, ‘When you can afford the diesel then come talk to me.’ I do my best to answer any questions and talk with whoever wants to talk about my truck, because I do not want to be like that guy.” Despite missing his SEMA 2014 debut because of complications, he instead unveiled it at the Lone Star Throwdown in Conroe, TX where it came in Top 20 of more than 2,000 vehicles that attended. Now, he’s finally going to show it off where he originally wanted and will be hitting this year’s SEMA Show!

he third time’s a charm, and Tim Grachen wants to make sure his 2nd generation Tundra is perfect with a 2014 Tundra conversion. He’s already shown it twice at SEMA, having it on display in 2013 with Go Rhino and last year with DECKED, showcasing their latest bed storage system. Now, he’s gearing up to showcase his truck once again at the 2015 SEMA Show, this time, upping the ante to his customization talents. As an avid off-road enthusiast, he set out to build the ultimate off-road long-travel suspension truck. “I’ve always had bracket style lifted trucks, which can’t exactly do what this truck will be able to do once it’s all finished up,” he admits. “I’ll be

able to do plenty of off-road excursions, while still showcasing it at different shows.” Nicknamed “Project Silver Bullet,” Grachen wanted something flashy, but not over the top. The initial design for the truck was very basic when he first thought of it after the 2014 SEMA Show was over, but as months passed, he continued to switch things up to create the perfect blend of function and style. “The final design is completely different and for the better in my eyes,” he adds. “There have been many long-travel off-road Tundras that have been built over the years, so I did a lot of research on exactly what I wanted and what would be the best products to accomplish that look.”

In order to make it perform out on the trails, Grachen opted for the completely new Camburg long-travel suspension, complete with 8” Fox DSC 2.5 coil-overs, 8” 2.5 piggyback triple bypasses, and 2.5 bump stops in front; while out back there’s Fox 16” 3.0 piggyback triple bypasses and 2.5 bump stops. Atlas SU1 spring under leaf packs round out the suspension mods, while a set of tough 17x8.5 BMF DRT Pro Series wheels in satin black with holes painted satin silver and wrapped in some 37X12.50R17 General Grabber Tires allow for a perfect dual purpose ride on-and off-road (with two spares in the bed rack just in case anything happens while having fun on the trails).

Despite being a 2008, it features the modern look of a 2014 Toyota Tundra thanks to a 2014 Tundra conversion kit by McNeil Racing. An RK Sport Ram Air Hood, Royalty Core RCD custommade grille with two 11.5” Vision X XPI light bars, and N-Fab RDS front bumper with three 11.5” Vision X XPR light bars and rock rails add to its undaunted exterior. Inside, the dark red Roadwire leather with black diamond stitching seats is one of Grachen favorite additions, along with the Roadwire heated front seats, custom-wrapped center console and one-off leather stitched headliner and pillars in the same hue. The build took eight months to complete and NBQ Motorsports in Stanton, CA helped build the

truck, but it wasn’t without it’s share of issues. “We did face many different challenges since the truck was converted from a 2008 Tundra to a 2014 Tundra front end, using the McNeil Racing fiberglass kit,” he mentions. “But the biggest issue that held up the build was finding out that the stock driveshaft was going to have to be replaced because it was too long. That hit us by surprise and delayed the completion of the suspension by two weeks while Powertrain Industries in Whittier, CA built me a new driveline front to rear and new center bearing. Having already created a buzz with his previous renditions of the truck, Grachen has steadily garnered tons of attention on this

project, with many waiting to see it fully finished. “I’m blown away at the final outcome of this truck. It came out exactly as I had rendered it and the craftsmanship that went into it to get it finished in time is remarkable.” Silver Bullet will attend multiple shows prior to SEMA 2015 and will also attend various shows during 2016 to flex its off-road prowess (which Grachen mentions is without a doubt possible). “The best thing about this build was being able to work with so many different people. It truly was an honor to work with so many talented people having the same passion as I do to get this truck to where it is today. I also want to thank all my sponsors for supporting this build from beginning to end.”

yle Freitas, of Valley Springs, CA, is no newcomer to the custom truck scene. In fact, he’s had at least three project vehicles featured in manufacturer’s booths at the SEMA Show – including last year’s show. For his latest truck, a 2015 GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali Duramax, Kyle called on Ryan Stepps at Forbidden Motorsports, in Modesto, CA - a company well known for building top-quality trucks, both for show and go. “I had seen several of Ryan’s builds at past SEMA Shows, so I contacted him and we put together a plan for my truck that would feature my sponsors’ products, including Rolling Big Power (RBP), because it was scheduled to be in the RBP booth at SEMA,” Freitas details. Forbidden Motorsports has been in business for more than 12 years and during that time the company has built numerous show-quality project vehicles, as well as countless competitive off-road rigs.

“When Kyle contacted me we were already flat-out with other SEMA project trucks, plus our regular customers,” Stepps says, “but the Denali is a great platform to work with, and Kyle had some of the best sponsors in the business, so we took it on. The result is a truck that can easily take home a show trophy or tackle tough terrain. nywhere you shop, you’re bound to see “His & Hers” branded items - from kitchenware to bedding, artwork and more. So when off-road enthusiasts and shop owner Jordan Muesse needed promo vehicles for his up and coming shop in Katy, TX - Premier Offroad and Performance – he knew he needed to grab everyone’s attention with a set of his and hers off-road machines. Since these vehicles would be the shop’s first statement in the offroading customization scene, he decided to go with a 2013 Jeep Wrangler and 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 Laramie as the foundations of the build. Muesse’s mission was to make these vehicles eye-catching and unique, in addition to being trail-worthy, especially if he wanted to spread the word about his shop - a reason why he went for a bold matching purple color scheme. “The truck is known as ‘Barney,’ the Jeep is ‘Baby B’”, he explains. “At first, I just planned on doing the purple truck and then decided to build the Jeep as a gift to my fiancée. I’m a huge Ram truck guy, as well as a Jeep fanatic, so of course I had to do all Mopar vehicles!”

Muesse wanted both to have the same rugged feel when parked next to each other and with the help of Strictly Custom Designs, was able to put his ideas to paper. “The builds were not very far from the initial design, but we did have a few small tweaks here and there,” he describes. “As for products, we made sure to do our research on the latest and greatest parts the aftermarket had to offer and we chose what would fit with our initial design.” The Ram sports a custom 12” 3rd Coast Suspension system with dual Fox 2.0 shocks in the front and Fox 2.0 reservoir shocks in the rear, while a set of 22x12 TIS 534B wheels framed in 37x13.50R22 Nitto Trail Grapplers complete the setup. the trio came about.” The Dodge Ram 2500 took about a year to completely finish, with the shop finishing just a few months before its SEMA 2014 debut; the Jeep was easier to complete and done within three months. Both were meticulously managed in order to get everything just right before they were unveiled at last year’s SEMA Show in the LFTD&LVLD section. “The public’s eye was definitely caught by the color scheme,” he explains. “Their purple color isn’t something you usually see, especially on two corresponding builds. The Ram 3500 definitely got a lot of attention as well since it towed both rigs to Las Vegas from Texas.” As the shop’s first big foray into the lifted truck/Jeep niche, Muesse and his team were

beyond thrilled at the results and the attention their vehicles received. And right after the show, they went out to the Las Vegas desert for this quick photo shoot, where they also got to see some dirt. “They stood up to the test on the terrain and were able to show off all the capabilities of the aftermarket parts, giving all of our sponsors the ability to brag that these aren’t

verything is seriously bigger in Texas, and the favored vehicle of choice is a lifted truck. The bigger, the better is how offroad enthusiasts in the Lone Star State like to do things, and Keefer Winn and his team at Keefer Winn Kustoms (KWK) are just the guys to make that happen. Inspired by his older cousin, who always had a few lifted trucks, Winn grew up interested in the style and was totally hooked once he got his first truck at age 16. His obsession with the off-road lifestyle sparked the idea for the shop when he was in high school when he and a few friends would try to “build the biggest and best” trucks around with their limited budgets and skill level at the time. “I was always taking it to the next level with every chance possible,” he admits. “Everyone around would go crazy over my trucks! So I would lift buddies’ trucks out 129

in my parents shop, which made me think that I might have a future doing something I’m truly passionate about. Being the truck enthusiast I am, I continued to learn from magazines and experimenting on my own trucks on the side while running my detail shop and helping my dad in his glass shop where I gained the knowledge and skills to open my own shop.” As soon as Winn was ready to open a full shop, he didn’t waste any time and sought out to create a thriving business that already had customers within weeks of opening its doors in Paris, TX. Barely a year into business, they’ve become one of the main shops in their area, specializing in lifts, lowering kits, performance, custom lighting and powder coating (they’re actually the only powder coating professionals within their city limits). But what they’re really known for is their suspension work and attention to detail. “I would like to thank Keg Media for being a big help to my shop. We’re actually 130

working together on a couple of builds for SEMA 2015. Social media and shows have been a huge help in growth for the shop also. We continue to improve our skills and service daily by offering our customers with the best prices/services and making sure no corners are cut.” Currently, custom powder coated wheels and suspension are in high demand at the shop. “Everyone seems to be moving towards attention to suspension detail,” he says. And it goes perfectly with his mantra of going for “the biggest, newest, most trend-setting thing possible, and attention to detail.” “This is where KWK comes in handy. We are not only dealers for all the top brands from lifts, wheels, tires and lighting. We do all the powder coating and installation in-house. It’s also not always about how much money is spent. It’s about being the most creative and being on top, not a follower. I’m here to raise the bar with the most trendsetting styles and products for both show

We’re still very much a new shop and trying to establish KWK, so business really fluctuates, but hopefully that is about to change!” And changing it is, since Winn recently had his first celebrity client – Shane “Kahuna” England, who is a Monster Jam racer. Winn powder coated his wheels and is currently working on the suspension for a truck that he’s building. As for the weirdest request thus far for the shop, Winn mentions that he had a client come in looking to “raise down” his front end. “That was a new one for me,” Winn laughs. So far, the team is working hard and 100% focused on stirring up attention at this year’s SEMA Show (they’ll have three vehicles on display, to be exact), while still honoring clients’ requests. “The SEMA trucks are going to be pretty crazy,” he admits. “They’re the craziest we’ve ever done, so be on the look out for them if you’re at the show!” GEAR: 2012 FORD F-250 SUPER DUTY

s the owner of CrossFit Hutto in Texas, Coy Balusek knows a thing or two about being tough. The workout regimen isn’t for the weak, but it does make members stronger and fitter than they’ve ever been before. So when it came to customizing his own JK Rubicon, he needed a Jeep just as tough as him and created the “Ripper.” As his second SEMA build (the first was a bagged Toyota Tacoma),

Balusek wanted something extreme and would hold its own during off-road trips. “Go big or go home is my motto!” Balusek exclaims. To get the badass Jeep perfect, Balusek enlisted the help of Keg Media to create the rendering, with the final result identical to the initial concept. “I knew they know what a SEMA build should be. I explained what I wanted and they designed it just like I envisioned. They are

the best to work with. I knew I wanted American Force wheels, Rackworks rack, N-Fab bumpers and Nerf bars and Smittybilt armor. I really liked how they looked. I’m super glad I choose them, not only are the products awesome the company is awesome as well.” Once every part was chosen, Balusek’s Jeep was dropped off to Shaun Freilich and the team at Complete Customs to work their magic and

make the render a reality. That was the last time Balusek saw his Jeep until the finished product was unveiled at the 2014 SEMA Show in N-Fab’s booth. “I couldn’t believe it. Keg and Complete Customs did an amazing job! So much so that my wife tells everyone that it’s hers,” he laughs. And Balusek didn’t waste any time testing its prowess in the dirt and mentions that the Jeep did great. “With everything we put on it and the tough trails, I thought it would for sure be a challenge, but it was nothing Ripper couldn’t handle,” he says. “This build was more fun than the others, and I really worked with professionals on this build and they’re the ones that made it so awesome. I can’t wait to build another one!” 156

mix-ADA is an industry leading manufacturer of more than 16,000 high-quality Jeep, truck and off-road accessories - including Rugged Ridge and Alloy USA brands, and complete Jeep styling packages. They used their Off Road Success Center at the 2013 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV, as the venue to build its vision of what a modern military Jeep might look like. The 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, dubbed “Kilroy,” is homage to the iconic graffiti “Kilroy Was Here,” drawn on walls throughout the world by American G.I.s during World War II, and a tribute to the legendary Jeeps that aided G.I.s throughout the war. Using a stock Commando Green four-door Jeep as its canvas, students from technical colleges across the country, under the guidance of Omix-ADA employees, completed the build in just a few days in SEMA’s Upper South Hall, while thousands of attendees watched it progress. “We needed to create a unique Jeep that required very little fabrication or additional modification of the components since this was being built on-site, over the course of three days in the middle of an active trade show,” says Patrick Bennett, product development manager at Omix-ADA. “Most of the accessories on the Jeep are off-the-shelf items that we offer for the JK; everything from

the wheels, suspension, skid plates, front and rear bumpers, to the hood, new fender flares and seat covers are all available from our catalog.” Henk Van Dongen, director of marketing at Omix-ADA adds, “The build not only allowed us to showcase what we could do with our new products, but having an interactive effort at the SEMA Show gave us an opportunity to network with, and get the next generation involved in the off-road hobby and aftermarket industry.” The final design was settled on after reviewing elements of historic Jeeps in Omix-ADA’s Atlantaarea collection and tied in with the patriotic theme of their booth at the 2013 SEMA Show.

Jeep’s appeal is about more than its offroad abilities. Over the years the Jeep JK has grown to celebrity cult status, with four-door Wranglers popping up everywhere. They’re the ultimate weekend warrior that can easily double as a daily driver and can be customized any which way you imagine. The possibilities are endless when it comes to putting together your own Jeep, which is one of the other main reasons for their popularity. Steve Cleary is one such Jeep Wrangler JK devotee, something he never thought he’d become. With a preference for custom sports cars, a life threatening close call with him and his daughter in his custom Porsche 911 Twin Turbo made him want to trade in the fast ride for a different type of thrill seeking vehicle. After selling his precious speedster, he began searching for a larger vehicle and had two criteria for the potential new ride: it had to be fun to drive and be a convertible of sorts. “I love the open air while driving,” he describes. “I looked at the larger BMWs, G-Wagons, Defenders and other vehicles. Honestly, buying a Jeep at that time never even crossed my mind. If someone had suggested it I would have said, ‘no way!’ I believe I was on eBay, while searching for a new vehicle, when I came across a custom Jeep that grabbed my attention.” His first custom JK was built at a shop where he was given a short list of different styles and components to choose from and two months later, his Jeep arrived. Although he loved his new ride, over time, he realized that his Jeep wasn’t overly customized and there were lots of things he still wanted to do to it. “In retrospect, I began to wish I had done the research myself and truly built a Jeep from the ground up,” he confesses. After a few months of fun with that first Jeep, Cleary accidentally flooded his engine compartment during an off-road excursion with

his son and his insurance company funded him the money to buy a new 2014 JK. But this time, he and his son were going to build it right and to their specifications. “I wanted the Jeep to be open air with trail doors and bikini top. It had to be offroad worthy with new seats. And it had to be built with quality parts and be unique,” he mentions. As soon as they got their new Jeep, they stripped everything out of it and worked with Line-X to pick out a custom graphite color and had them Line-X as much of the Jeep as possible. According to Cleary, they had done many Jeeps but said this was the first Jeep in which they sprayed the interior as well. “They told us it was their most challenging and most rewarding job to date,” he says. “My first Jeep had a similar finish, but tended to sparkle in the sun. So much so that one person asked me if I had added glitter to the paint! To avoid the same issue we worked with the owner of the local Line-X to add just the right amount of matte coating. It drove the cost of the

Line-X up, but was well worth the extra money.” Cleary chose lime green as their accent color and began powder coating selected parts, even bolts and brackets, to get the look just right. “When we did install accessories we didn’t like we replaced them with better components,” he explains. “If we didn’t like the color of a stock item, like the vent rings (and we didn’t) we custom painted them. After we had completed so much powder coating on the suspension components and differential covers we noticed how ugly the axles and drive shafts looked. They were naturally covered in surface rust. So we removed them, had them sanded and painted black. Now they look great. Again our desire was to make a true one-of-a-kind custom Jeep and we spared no expense (within reason) to reach that goal.” A lot of attention was given to the interior, which now flaunts custom marine-grade floor mats; Corbeau seats with custom 3-point harnesses, lime green accents and heating pads on all four seats; and a one-off sound system, mainly with Wet Sounds products. One challenge they had was deciding where to mount the subwoofer, while also incorporating some storage for a briefcase and the Jeep cover. To overcome this, he added a push button lock that now works “like a charm” and gives them storage for two amps. “We love the swivel mount rear speakers. For tailgate parties we simply turn them around and blast away. Adding the LED lighting to all the speakers (even the indash speakers) gave it that extra touch.” The build is loaded with LED lights, including two 50” LED light bars above the windshield and a mixture of spot and flood configurations to give them options when off-roading. And for a bit of character, some green LED lights under the seats and within the engine compartment were added, and they painted the Jeep emblem lime green. For off-road performance, they went with the Rubicon 179

Express 4.5” lift kit and Fox suspension in addition to a Fox steering stabilizer. For added power, a RIPP Supercharger was added and a Gibson exhaust system with dual tail pipes was installed. “After buying a Jeep from a large custom shop, and then building our own, we realized the tremendous benefits of one-off custom Jeep builds,” Cleary confesses. “I didn’t realize the options available to us until we built our own from the ground up. I also realized you couldn’t really design a one-of-a-kind Jeep in a couple hours.” Having started a number of successful businesses, Cleary realized the opportunity in the custom Jeep industry and he and his son, Jordan

have since started Celebrity Jeeps in Dallas, TX - a custom Jeep business that only builds made-toorder Jeeps to customer specifications. “Our business model allows us to move way beyond what has become somewhat of a cookie cutter industry, and explore a wide range of designs and options that reflect our client’s desires. People looking at a high-end custom Jeep might not have any idea of the opportunities in a custom Jeep build. We also market to people, like me, who might have never considered a custom Jeep. I have owned many cars that cost more than my Jeep, but none were as fun to drive, had the versatility and turned as many heads.”

ab Fours pushed the envelope of design with their concept THE LEGEND that was featured in DUB Magazine’s Issue 94, and now they’re back with a completely new radical custom – The LEGEND 2.Woah. This new project builds upon THE LEGEND and improves its functionality to go with its ground-breaking looks. “The premise of ‘The LEGEND 2.Woah’ was to keep a majority of the crazy proportions and styling of being wide, low, and on huge tires…. Yet be prepared to ride on ANY trail regardless of difficulty, says owner/CEO of Fab Fours, Inc. Greg Higgs. “We have to be able to go where the enthusiasts and cameras are, and if that is on the hardest of the hard trails, so be it! 2.Woah was going to look wild, but function like a boss.”

Just like its predecessor, THE LEGEND 2.Woah is just as bold and eye-catching and is all “show and go, without a question.” To finish the vision of the original, all five in-house designers at Fab Fours worked tirelessly to get everything right, and thanks to the company’s sophisticated product development, they have all the equipment needed to prototype instantly. According to Higgs, they’re now creating a new product every 56-man hours, which is extremely fast in the aftermarket industry. “Consider that after that design time, we can create a steel version in half a day,” he mentions.” Since we have full 3D CAD models of the Jeep JK 195

this was a straightforward process of concept sketch to the Jeep. The real changes were just from the first LEGEND to 2.Woah, particularly the tighter fenders and the redesigned 4-link front suspension compared to the original radius arms.” In total, it took nine weeks to build 2.Woah, but if Higgs had to make another one tomorrow, he says it’ll only take 12 days now! THE LEGEND 2.Woah may look like a show vehicle, but Higgs made sure that it was still trail worthy, with only a few minor concessions to performance here and there in the interest of keeping the Jeep so low. It still has all the mods you’d expect from a high-end rock crawler – including ProRock 80 front and rear axles , RCV axle shafts, PSC Motorsports full hydraulic steering, a roll cage, a LS3 motor, a 4:1 transfer case, and zero degree departure and approach angles. One standout addition on the 2.Whoa is its huge red Mohawk on top of the JK, which was introduced when Higgs was sketching the Jeep to decide on color scheme. “Thumbing through color options and glancing over at the Jeep it hit me and I went and sketched the ‘HAWK’ on top,” he describes. “As it was written, it had to be done! That and I refused to cater to the ‘haters’ that talked smack about our original THE LEGEND. LEGEND 2.Woah was in fact going to be a more capable purpose-built crawler that oozed function – I had to add something purely impractical and over the top.” Another highlight of the build is its insane width thanks to its 46” tires and no lift kit. According to Higgs, it has a net width of 103.5” - slightly hanging over a legal width trailer. “No lift means that the full burden of the diameter of the tire will be right at the center of the frame,” he adds. “Normally, with the frame considerably 196

higher than the centerline of the tire there is a much smaller cross section of tire to manage when turning lock to lock. To pull off a fully functional 2.Woah, the axles are 78” wide! Then, it has 14” wide wheels with a negative 77 offset!” Although, the response has been phenomenal for Higgs and Fab Fours since people love its over-the-top nature, it’s still not flawless when it comes to its off-road capabilities. Higgs still has an Atlas transfer case to install so that it can do “front digs” to avoid 3-point turns due to its long length and width and mentions that it performs

its best at around 7 psi in the tires. “With the extra width wheels, she is quick to squirt some air in a bind. Beadlocks for the wheels are in the future, we just have to find the right set that can complement the build and maintain the width.” When THE LEGEND 2.Woah was unveiled at Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, UT earlier this year, Higgs mentions that he pretty much destroyed the original axle trusses and suspension links when he limped off of Pritchett Canyon which is one of the toughest trails in Moab. “The front axle was holding in place by a thread!” he

confesses. “But about 20 hours working besides the stellar team at Moab Outpost, I had her patched together and back out on the trails. This was the major learning curve for coming back and redesigning the suspension… no risk now!” 2.Whoa is gearing up to make an appearance at the upcoming SEMA Show, where it’ll compete in the show’s “Battle of the Builders.” Higgs and his team gave it a quick tear down and a new color scheme to make her presentable. After, THE LEGEND 2.Woah will then take to the road and hit industry wheeling events, FAB Fours trade shows and general off-road adventures, hitting up any trail that it encounters. Oh, and for those that don’t believe that THE LEGEND 2.Woah is a legitimate off-road machine, Higgs has some parting words for you… “Call us out. If you can get media coverage interested then lets do it. Crawling, bouncing, racing, any time, any place! See you on the trails!”

1. Start by ensuring your battery is fully charged, disconnect any accessories (mobile phone, iPod, radar detector, dash cam or GPS) from the vehicle’s accessory port, and turn off the daytime running lights (see owner’s manual). Insert the supplied communications cable into the tuner.

3. You’ll be instructed to turn the key to the ‘on’ or ‘off’ position, but do not start the engine at any time during the programming process. Hypertech’s power programmer will communicate with your truck’s computer to confirm tuning calibration, and display Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) if any are present.

2. Connect the other end to the diagnostic port under the dash. Securely plug the cable into the port and the programmer. During programming, do not disconnect the tuner until completion.

4. If you do have any trouble codes (DTCs), it will ask you to clear it before the Max Energy 2.0 programmer can reprogram your vehicle. Once cleared, it will allow you to select any available options and features for your vehicle.

8. GEAR RATIO (Most Vehicles) - Use the buttons to the right of the screen to highlight Gear Ratio, then press the ‘Select’ button to calibrate the speedometer and odometer if a non-stock rear gear ratio has been installed.

To save your selected tuning options, use the buttons to the right of the screen to scroll up or down and select any combination of letters or numbers. The ‘Prev’ and ‘Next’ buttons move the cursor left and right. Once you have selected a name, press ‘Done’.

5. Press ‘Select’ to enter the Tuning menu from the Main Menu. The programmer will display 3 tuning options:

9. COLD AIR INTAKE (Some Vehicles) - This will only be listed if your vehicle requires a custom tune when using an aftermarket cold air intake. Use the buttons to the right of the screen to highlight Cold Air Intake. Press the ‘Select’ button to install custom tuning for a specific aftermarket air intake.

PROGRAMMING Follow all of the messages on the programmer screen during the programming process. The programmer will prompt you to turn the key to the ‘RUN’ and ‘OFF’ position during this process. When turning the key to the ‘RUN’ position, it is important to make sure that you turn the key to the most forward position possible WITHOUT starting the vehicle.

PRESET TUNE - Select a previously saved tune for installation. CUSTOMIZE TUNE - Select all Power Tuning and adjustable features available for the vehicle. UNINSTALL TUNING - Select to reprogram all options back to factory stock settings. When using the programmer for the first time, select the Customize Tune option. Note that some features are not available for all applications. The year, make, model, and engine of your vehicle determines the available features. During the installation, only the available features for your application will appear on the screen. Screens may vary slightly from those shown. 6. ENGINE TUNING - Use the buttons to the right of the screen to highlight Engine Tuning, then press the ‘Select’ button to install optimized engine tuning. For diesel vehicles, such as Jereme’s ’08 GMC 3500HD, use the buttons to the right of the screen to highlight your choice of tunes: Stage 1, Stage 2, or Stage 3. Press ‘Select’ to save the chosen tune. If you select ‘Stock’, the programmer will install any additional features selected, but retain the stock engine tuning. 7. TOP SPEED (Most Vehicles) - Use the buttons to the right of the screen to highlight Top Speed. Press the ‘Select’ button to adjust the top speed limiter. Using the buttons to the right of the screen to scroll up or down, and the desired MPH can be highlighted. Press ‘Select’ to save the chosen value. Some applications allow the top speed limit to be lowered. The top speed settings that appear on the programmer will LOWER your speed from 25 to 75 MPH. This will keep your vehicle from exceeding that speed. To raise the top speed limit, highlight and save the speed that matches your tires’ speed rating. Raising the top speed is not recommended for vehicles with load rated tires, as serious damage or injuries could occur.

10. FAN TEMP (Some Vehicles) - Use the buttons to the right of the screen to highlight Fan Temp. Press the ‘Select’ button to adjust the temperature at which the electric cooling fans turn on and off. Using the buttons to the right of the screen to scroll up or down, highlight the temperature to turn on the cooling fan, and press ‘Select’ to save the chosen value. 11. 0-60 RESTRICTION (Some Vehicles) - Use the buttons to the right of the screen to highlight 0-60 Restriction. Using the buttons to the right of the screen to scroll down, highlight Disabled and press the ‘Select’ button to save. 12. SELECTION REVIEW & PROGRAMMING - The Tuning Menu will display a + sign next to each option that you selected to change. Once you have completed your selections from the Tuning Menu, the programmer is now ready to flash the vehicle’s computer. Press the ‘Flash’ button to continue. The next screen displays all of the Tuning Options for your vehicle, and the options selected. Use the buttons to the right of the screen to scroll up or down, and review your selections. To accept all tuning options, press ‘Accept’ to begin the programming process. To make changes to any option, select ‘Change’. 13. PRESET TUNE - The programmer allows you to save up to 5 preset tunes. This feature will save a specific selection of programming options in the programmer memory. The preset tune can be selected from the Tuning Menu. If you wish to save the currently selected tuning options as a Preset Tune, select ‘Yes’. If you don’t want to save the selected options as a preset tune, select ‘No’.

While the unit is programming, the following is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: DO NOT leave the vehicle while programming is in process. DO NOT unplug or disturb the cable, or turn the key off (unless instructed to do so by the programmer). DO NOT START THE VEHICLE AT ANY TIME WHILE THE PROGRAMMER IS CONNECTED! If the unit stops programming or is interrupted, please make a note of any message(s) that appear on the programmer screen and call the provided tech service line. On certain applications, the instrument panel message center may light up, and random code information, such as REDUCED ENGINE POWER, and other warning lights may display. This is a NORMAL step during the programming process. That’s all there is to it, and unlike some tuners that require a dash mounted display, Hypertech’s power programmers can be stored conveniently in your glove box or center console. (NOTE: The above numbered steps correspond with the new, numbered step-by-step images. The other images/ captions below are included to make the install more colorful. NEW JEEP WRANGLER CLIMBER EXHAUST SYSTEM TAKES THE WORRY OUT OF ROCK CRAWLING WORDS & PHOTOS: DICK DeLOACH

orla Performance, a pioneer in the design and manufacture of stainless steel cat-back performance exhaust systems for three decades, has released its new Climber exhaust for the 2012-2015 Jeep Wrangler 4-door, equipped with a 3.6L V6 engine, and automatic or manual transmission. The new system is built from aircraft-quality austenitic T-304 stainless steel and designed to tuck up above the frame, allowing maximum clearance for rock crawling and off-roading. The exhaust also won’t interfere with highperformance suspension parts or skid plates, bolts on with no welding and only one simple cut and reduces exhaust weight by 25.5 pounds. While the installation is pretty straightforward, Borla recommends that an exhaust shop or professional aftermarket parts retailer perform the installation of the system. However, if you decide to do the work yourself, Borla recommends using two people and all under-car safety precautions be used, including eye protection. A hoist or heavy-duty jack stands is required. When we got word from Borla’s Marketing Manager Chris Higgins that the exhaust was being installed at Borla’s R&D facility in Oxnard, CA on a full-custom 2013 Wrangler JK, owned by Ken Mitchell, president of American Fastbacks, Inc., in Corona, CA we wanted to be there. We talked with Mitchell a month after the installation to find out what he thought of the system and he said he loves it. “When highway cruising I gain about 1-2 MP; the only problem is I’m not getting the best gas mileage because I keep it in a lower gear and am always on the throttle to hear more of the exhaust rumble!” he said. 210

Borla Senior Fabricator, Lorenzo “Lo Lo” Avila begins by unbolting and removing the huge factory “suitcase” muffler.

Next unbolt the front muffler assembly clamps, unhook it from the two rubber hangers and remove the assembly.

Measure and mark a 2” line behind the driver-side catalytic converter and cut the pipe using a power saw (or hacksaw) with a metal-cutting blade.

The bulky and restrictive factory exhaust (rear) can’t compare to the quality of the Borla exhaust, which is also 25.5 pounds lighter.

Attach the new under-trans pipe assembly to the right-side flange using factory hardware. Place a clamp over the expanded end of Y-Pipe assembly insert the ends into left-hand front pipe assembly and under-trans pipe assembly. Do not tighten clamps.

The new Borla under-trans pipe assembly tucks up tight - above the transfer case - and is much less restrictive than the factory component.

t was on and popping at our first LFTD&LVLD custom truck and Jeep show at TORC’s Showdown in Charlotte off road race at the Charlotte Speedway in North Carolina this past July 10th-11th. Monster Energy was on hand with us, passing out samples of the DUB Edition flavors, showcased Ken Block’s Gymkhana 3 Ford Fiesta and brought out our favorite Monster Energy Girls Carissa Rosario and Carla Daniela to greet fans with crowd-favorite brand ambassador, Deebo! We also had some of the sickest custom rigs on display, including several trucks from Rimz One and a pair of crazy custom Jeeps from Fab Fours - THE LEGEND and THE LEGEND 2.Whoa. hings got hot and steamy down South for the 2015 Custom Sounds Texas Heat Wave! Held from July 24th through 26th at the Travis County Expo Center in Austin, TX, the three-day car show was literally the place to be for all car culture enthusiasts in Texas. Having been around for more than 25 years, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of the biggest shows in the South! The show had something for everyone, including custom trucks and cars, burnout contest, live music, tattoo expo, hydraulic contest, monster trucks, bikini contest and an audio competition to see which ride was the loudest! Hundreds of vehicle enthusiasts showed off their hottest customs and went all out to compete against other hot rides for awards and cash prizes. Basically, if it had wheels, it could be entered into the competition, with all makes and models represented at the show. The Tattoo Expo allowed fans the opportunity to be inked by some of the finest tattoo artists in Texas, while all the fun booths and interactive displays were a treat for all.
