eems like just yesterday that we released the very first special off-road issue of DUB magazine called LFTD&LVLD. It was so well received that we spun it off as it’s own magazine. You’re now holding Issue 7 and we’re just getting started. We’ve met a ton of enthusiasts and readers of the magazine and the feedback received has been great! We’ve taken note so that we could put out a comprehensive resource for the lifted and leveled truck and Jeep scene. We’re starting the year off fresh with some of the hottest lifted customs from both veteran and novice builders alike. Haük Designs is notorious for unique builds and this year, Kenny Hauk has outdone himself. His Rock Rat Jeep pays homage to the Willy’s CJ2A vehicles from a bygone era – and he finds ways to infuse a modern take to the project. Another Jeep belongs to 20-year-old Taylor Sprayberry, who transformed his 1997 Jeep

Wrangler TJ into becoming “Hyper Active,” an award-winning Jeep that lives up to it’s namesake. The classic 1955 Chevy Apache is not your typical truck that we would feature, but as soon as we flicked through our Instagram feeds and stumbled upon it we knew that we had to get it in ink and paper. It’s a perfect blend of classic American pick-up design and modern LFTD&LVLD upfitting. One look at the Jake’s Custom Diesel Ford F-450 and you’ll think that your eyes are deceiving you. What you’re actually looking at is a six-door conversion that’s anything but ordinary and called “Poseidon’s Wrath” for its striking blue paint job. Doetsch Off-Road is on a mission to save moms from minivans. Their Tail Reaper Jeep is one such ride any soccer mom would love to roll! Thanks to a social media contest that let fans choose the mods, the Jeep is now a fan favorite everywhere it goes.

Sometimes a custom build doesn’t start from scratch. When it came time to rebuild his truck, Zach Pennock knew he needed to transform it from the ordinary lifted Ford F-250 it was, into a head-turning monster worthy of sharing the name“Optimus” with the leader of the Autobots from Transformers. enny Hauk of Haük Designs never builds anything normal. Instead, he lets his imagination run wild so that he can create the most unique builds on the planet. His Project Phoníx Wrangler JK and WWII warbird-styled Tomahauk Jeep were one-of-akind creations that garnered national attention from automotive and off-road enthusiasts. Now he’s back with what has to be his magnum opus, pièce de résistance, tour de force and simply put - his masterpiece. Named “Rock Rat,” his newest creation is a Jeep like no other. Taking influences from the rat rod culture, the Steampunk scene

and some Mad Max movies, the Rock Rat blew people away when it was revealed at the 2015 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV. “We love the rat rod scene and the creative designs we have been seeing in that segment of the car world,” Hauk describes. “We thought it would be cool to mix a rock crawler with a rat rod inspired Willys CJ2A. Something that we could slam down low for cruising around town and then lift up with a little nitrogen and take it off-road.” The project vehicle is based on a reproduction 1947 Willy’s CJ2A body from Omix-ADA and has been chopped and stretched to fit a modified YJ

frame. “The Willys is where offroading began. So what better vehicle to show our love for offroading heritage and blow people’s minds than a cool custom rat rod rock crawler?” The Willys CJ2A was the first mass-produced Jeep created for civilians back in 1945, which was first inspired by World War II model MB vehicles. Hauk started out with a rough rendering to get a basic idea of how it would look, but things kept evolving in the midst of the actual build. Once he received the body, he realized it was too small for everything he wanted to add and the engine and transmission didn’t fit the frame rails so he proceeded to stretch the entire platform. Over the course of three months, the rendering saw several revisions to get everything just right. 44

He also knew that he wanted to go with a Cummins diesel to power his project, so he called his friends at Industrial Injections and Turbonetics - who are world-renowned for their diesel engines and performance- to help them build their 12 V Cummins diesel that they pulled out of an old school bus. Now, it produces just over 700 hp and 1,200 ft.-lb. of torque. Power is routed to a TH400 transmission before hitting its NP205 Transfer Case, where it’s then split to an Auburn-locked Dana 60 front axle and an Auburn Gear-locked 14-bolt rear axle, Hauk explains. Allowing it to traverse over rough terrain is its custom Synergy and Steinjäger suspension which allows 14” travel, ORI STX Struts and Super Industrial rebuildable ball joints from Rare Parts, as well as its 44” Pit Bull Tires on B.A.D. Beadlock wheels - all linked together with J.E. Reel driveshafts. A complete Red Neck Ram hydraulic assist steering setup from West Texas Offroad was fitted and helps it easily maneuver on the trails. The Rock Rat is covered in detail such as the custom HID Projectors headlights that feature etched skull logos which add to its intricate detail

and give it that bad ass look. Other vintage parts from the likes of semi trucks, tractors, fire trucks and airplanes have found a new purpose on this Rock Rat, too. The windshield glass is actually repurposed safety glass from an old house that was being torn down, while the unique center console features 120 feet of steel round bar, a well pump handle shifter and some old switches from a 1960s fire truck. The tailgate is a custom bead-rolled piece that fits the old vintage Willys look and the materials for the interior was cut at a local saw mill. According to Hauk, during the cutting process, the band saw blade broke, so he just used it as part of the trim that can be seen in several spots on the 1947 Willys body. But Hauk’s favorite highlights are the vintage looking Kicker Audio system built by Sounds So Good Audio from Waynesboro, PA; the one-of-kind hand-built ram skull steering wheel and the wormy maple wood interior that gives it that Mad Max feel. The outcome is a head-turning machine that’s built for any apocalyptic world. “I was really surprised at the overwhelmingly positive

response from people who have seen the build,” Hauk says. “People love all the little details we squeezed in all over this thing. The Willys guys, the 4x4 guys, the rat rod guys - they all seem to dig it. Now there will always be some purists who will hate anything new or different because it doesn’t fit into their mold or classification, but honestly they can keep living under that boring rock while we keep innovating and creating. To date, this has been the most popular build we have done. I think it is because it reaches out to people from all sides of the car and truck world.” Hauk’s creations don’t just look good, and his Rock Rat is more than capable of wheeling off-road. “Surprisingly we found a nice compromise that still performs really well offroad and is fun to cruise around on the streets .” Since Hauk was thrilled with the results, he’s actually looking to build a few more rides with a similar theme. Now, it’s touring the country, “blowing smoke, burning rubber and scaring small children.”

oetsch Off-Road is one of the country’s most reputable Jeep builders, having customized them since 2001. With his motto “Saving Moms From Minivans,” owner Dave Doetsch and his crew always go all out with every single one of their Jeep projects. “That motto is meant to imply that rather than a family going out and purchasing a boring minivan, they can instead build a highly capable Jeep Wrangler that can take them to the mall on weekdays and the mountains on weekends,” Doetsch explains. “We build custom Jeeps based on any budget.” Their builds are no stranger to our magazine’s pages and they always bring out new rides for the various shows, with Trail Reaper one of their main Jeep builds for the 2014 SEMA

Show. “We name all of our builds in order to give them a personality, and this particular build invokes a persona to get out on the trail and absolutely tear it up,” he says. “It was designed and intended to be the best mix of show and go.” A top-of-the-line Rubicon was chosen as the base for the build as it included heavy-duty Dana 44 front and rear axles, as well as electronic locking differentials. On top of that, they added a TeraFlex long-arm suspension system and a slew of other quality parts in order to show that a Jeep can still look “pretty while being functional.” And to add a bit more excitement for this particular project, Doetsch Off-Road created a national online contest that allowed the public to vote on nearly every aftermarket product used on the Jeep. A special website was created and

featured three choices for each major component, including tires, wheels, bumpers, interior and even the overall theme (rock crawler, street Jeep or trail Jeep). “The contest was called ‘Run My Build’ and had a goal to debut the finished Jeep at the 2014 SEMA Show in the Rhino Linings booth,” he mentions. “In the end, there were more than 70,000 votes and the end result features all the products with the most votes.” Since the contest dictated how the Jeep was going to turn out, the shop’s crew never knew what was going to be the most popular product or what they would be installing next. “The design was constantly changing and it kept us on our toes the entire time.”

Some of the products with the most votes included Bushwacker Flat Style fenders flares; Rockford Fosgate audio components; Rigid Industries lighting; Rugged Ridge exterior and interior accessories; and TeraFlex suspension, tire carrier and front and rear HD differential covers. A year later, Doetsch is still getting requests to replicate the Jeep by their customers. And because Doetsch Jeeps are anything but just for show, all of the builds from the shop goes through real-world testing in the Arizona desert. “With a landscape made up of rocks, cacti, river crossings and miles of dirt, we have the best proving grounds for ensuring our Jeeps, including Trail Reaper, will live up to expectations.”

Currently, Trail Reaper is on tour and being featured at major shows and off-road events throughout the West Coast. Doetsch mentions that he was able to use new products that hadn’t been released to the public, which is what gave the Trail Reaper a (then) edge over the competition of other Jeep builds. But in the end, Doetsch aims to create custom Jeeps that will fit everyone’s budget, dialing the personalized build up or down so that the customer is happy with their finished product (which aligns with their pockets).

veryone remembers their first build. It’s an unforgettable experience that will live on with you forever - no matter how many rides you build over the years. Taylor Sprayberry recently finished creating his dream weekend warrior Jeep and loved every moment of the experience. Nicknamed “Hyper Active,” the 20-year-old Sprayberry knew he’d want his 1997 Jeep Wrangler TJ to be a beast on the trails, but also wanted it to be practical enough for daily driving and decided on a clean build rather than something over the top.

“The Jeep was chosen because of all the different build routes and capabilities of the vehicle,” he explains. “A Jeep is a vehicle category of its own and it can’t be compared to a car or a truck. It’s simply one of a kind. Using Monster Energy as inspiration, I thought what better name than ‘Hyper Active’ since it’s an energy drink and the Jeep is always hyped up for whatever I throw at it - whether it’s a show or a tough, rugged off-road adventure!” Unlike many seasoned builders that like to create renderings of what their projects could look like, Sprayberry designed the Jeep in his head. He knew the exact look he wanted and went after making it a reality with gumption.

“It mainly started out with the products that I thought were the best fit for the build. That changed when I came across Rough Country and their products. Most of the products on the rig are from Rough Country, and I liked how suitable they were for what I wanted. Shortly after Rough Country began to support me, I was able to find other products that complemented the look I was going for.” Such Rough Country products that adorn Sprayberry’s ride include the lift, track bars, front bumper, winch and front winch plate LED bar bracket and 50” LED bar bracket. Skidz Jeep & 4x4 (Hot Springs, AR) installed the lift and did a wide-track Dana 44 axle swap using brackets and trusses from Artec Industries, which also happens to be one of the biggest compliments off-road enthusiasts give him about the Jeep. LED Concepts provide his TJ superior lighting with their 50” LED bar with halo, 32” LED bar, 12” LED bar and the

headlight halos, with the headlights constructed by TS Lighting – one of his favorite additions. For the most part, people love Sprayberry’s first build - with its 1997 Jeep TJ graphics airbrushed by Hanson’s Custom Painting - and often congratulate him on such a clean off-road Jeep despite being a novice. But then there are those haters who criticize it, which Sprayberry notes that he’s okay with since it still means his Jeep is getting attention, whether good or bad. “The Jeep could always be better if I had the money to invest in it,” he admits. “But with what I’ve put into it I could not be happier with the way it looks and rides now.” The Jeep has made its rounds on the show circuit (including the 2015 DUB Show Tour Dallas stop, where it won 1st place for Best Jeep) and is now being used as Sprayberry’s daily driver and weekend toy, having been tested at Hot Springs ORV Park in Arkansas 70

a few times where it maneuvered through many Level 4 trails known for their high difficulty level. “Even though it’s a daily driver, the Jeep holds its own very well on rugged or rocky terrain,” he says. As of now, this is the fourth year of the build and according to Sprayberry it will never

be finished. “I will always strive to make it better with every opportunity I get.” With a newfound love for customizing, Sprayberry is already working on his next project – a 1983 Jeep J10 build, which he hopes is just as awesome as “Hyper Active.”

or Jake’s Custom Diesel, there are no limits to what can be done when customizing a vehicle. Their mission is to drum up wild customs that others think are impossible. One such example is their six-door 2014 Ford Super Duty F-450 Platinum that makes you do a double take to make sure what you’re seeing is right. “Just drop it off, trust our shop and pick up something that surpasses all expectations,” owner of the shop, Jake Mitchell mentions. Six-door builds are a favorite among Mitchell’s customers, and so when it came down to build his own Ford, he knew he wanted his own six-door Dually for himself. “This build was created from a wrecked, salvage truck and was reconstructed from the ground up,” he explains. “We like to build Fords over anything else and have all the Ford technology needed to create what is most

desired.” But what made the project more special, was the fact that it became a family affair, with his brother, father and grandfather lending a hand to get it just right. “In the three months it took to build the truck, many laughs were had, memories made, and inappropriate words said. It was fun to work on the truck with my grandpa because he and I worked on my first build.” The crew cab was stretched to accommodate one more set of doors and back row of seats to create the six-door Dually, which now sports six captain’s chairs with no headrests to make the inside feel more personal and comfortable. SBC Racks fabricated a one-off light bar rack to mount to the top of the extra large truck, while a 3rd Coast 16” suspension complete with King 3.0x12 Coilover shocks in the front, King 3.0x12 Bypass shocks in the rear and King 2.5x10

steering stabilizer. To complete the lifted stance a set of 42x14.50R17 Goodyear Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar tires were mated to 17” KMC XD Series Battalion Dually wheels. For some added power under the hood, EGR and DPF delete kits combined with a 4” Flo~Pro Performance exhaust and H&S Mini Maxx tuner provided Mitchell with extra horsepower. According to Mitchell, the hardest choice to make on the project was the color. “You just never know how it’s going to look like finished. My wife, Grace, picked the color and I went with her gut. Everyone at the shop loved the color – 3M’s Atlantis Blue, which is why we named it ‘Poseidon’s Wrath.’” Once the color was chosen, the Dually was ready for its exterior mods, which include Fiberwerx front fenders, Cervinis Ram Air hood and Fusion front bumper with Rigid Industries lights. The interior was chosen to exude luxury and also resemble and upgraded Platinum Ford interior and each door panel was custom molded to fit the 16 6.5” Focal door speakers. 94

The middle and rear seats have a console with cup holders that were designed to match the front center console in the other Ford trucks and house the Kicker Solo-Baric 15” subwoofer. “It was important for us to have the headliner be seamless, so when inside, you would never know the truck wasn’t originally a six-door. All the little details are as important to us as the big ones.” Although the truck was never built to be a show queen, Mitchell finally decided to take it to the Slamboree Show in Shawnee, Oklahoma after some encouragement from his community. “The general response from the public was very positive!” he says. “We feel like we won the most important award – the Kid’s Choice Award! We have people constantly taking pictures and videos while we’re at stoplights and driving around town. The truck is a great conversation starter.” The shop has completed numerous builds in the past, but they’ve never taken the time to showcase them until now. As the shop’s favorite build thus far, this truck has set the bar for future projects and Mitchell and his crew are now trying to go above and beyond for their next big build. he best kinds of builds are the ones that continue to be worked on. A custom ride is never really complete in the eyes of the builder and there’s always something more to add to make it really pop. Such was the case for David Sam of Auburndale, FL, and his 1955 Chevy Apache truck. After searching for a “classic truck,” he stumbled upon his soon-to-be masterpiece, which had already been restored like new.

“When I originally bought the truck, I had every intention on keeping the truck the way it was and just adding a stereo system,” Sam explains. “But once I saw the Specialty Forged wheels, I had to put those on it.” So he switched out the 20” wheels that were already on the truck with a set of 26x16 Specialty Forged gloss black and milled wheels wrapped in massive 40x15.50R26LT Fuel Off-Road Mud Gripper tires. “When I saw them online, they blew my mind just how big they were and I knew they would look perfect on my ’55, which already had a lift high enough to clear them; I just needed to change the running gear out.” 102

As for the audio, the classic pickup was given a modern system with a new Retro Sound Digital radio with Rockford Fosgate components, Sundown Audio 8â&#x20AC;? subs and two Crescendo 400W and 600W amps. The frame features a complete rectangle tubing with a Chevy 454 Big-Block motor, Turbo 350 Transmission and a Deuce-and-a-half transfer case. After Sam purchased the truck, he added a custom leaf spring suspension that gives the truck its unique look. He also added a fully functional hydraulic dump bed with brand new black stained wood floor kit, in addition to aftermarket power steering, 4-wheel all-disc brakes and an aftermarket air conditioning system. Sam bought the Apache to be a weekend cruiser and wanted to add to its unique looks for his own personal enjoyment - not to be taken to shows or become Internet famous, which would eventually happen. Being extremely satisfied with his additions, Sam enjoys taking the Apache out for weekend rides and prides himself on collecting stares whenever it hits the road.

ou may be familiar with Optimus Prime from the Transformers movies and toy franchise, and know that he’s the leader of the Autobots. Capable of transforming into a Big Rig that towers above the rest, Zach Pennock wanted his Ford F-250 build to do the same among other customs and christened his creation “Optimus.” Dressed in a similar red, white and blue color scheme as Optimus Prime, Pennock’s mission was to build a show truck worthy of the same respect as the fictional Transformers character. After buying the truck from a good friend who would only sell it to someone who would take care of it and take it to the next level, Pennock went to work to make his personal “Optimus” come to life. Although the initial design was only meant to feature a leaf spring suspension with 22” wheels and 35” tall tires, as the truck’s third owner, Pennock decided he needed to make it live up to the Optimus namesake. “I knew that I wanted to change some things on the truck to make it stand out,” he says. “I started by selling its old school small wheels and big tires. Then, I 4-linked the rear and changed the powder coat color to ‘Shocker Yellow’ to match the pinstripe in the paint.” According to Pennock, the suspension was a oneoff idea that would let him keep his fuel tank and mimic the front Z Link Kit from Skyjacker.

To further provide a unique look, Pennock decided to go with the CenCal style and opted for 24x14 Hostile Exile wheels wrapped in 37x13.50R24 Toyo Open Country M/T tires. “I wanted to build a CenCal truck because growing up I always built the old school square body Chevys with 16” wheels and boggers,” he explains. “I followed a lot of different builds on Instagram and got a lot of ideas from there. I chose the tire and wheel package because I like the clean style of Hostile wheels and had to run 37” tires to fill the fender well.”

To give “Optimus” the extra power it needed, Pennock boosted performance by adding a Methanol injection system, GTP38R turbocharger, ram cold air hood system, 5” polished Magnaflow exhaust and Power Hungry Performance Hydra Chip with Cyclops adapter. Inside are TVs in the headrests, Kicker 10” subs behind the back seats and RE Audio XXX Series component speakers. Since the truck was first built by Bigfoot 4x4, Inc. (in St. Louis, MO) to match one of their monster trucks, the paint scheme was already planned out and Pennock decided to keep it the same. However, he did change the front end to the ’05-’07 F-Series, pulled the body off and welded all the holes in the frame to give it that Autobot look and smoothed out the rails and sprayed the frame and axles.

But for Pennock, the highlight of the build is the custom reverse triangulated 4-link suspension with King coilovers in the rear, which a lot of people didn’t believe would actually work. “People doubted the suspension setup, but after some trial and error we perfected it.” He definitely proved them wrong and after a year of being under construction, “Optimus” made its grand debut at the Lifted Truck Nationals Off-Road Truck Show, Cruise and Concert in Ridgedale, MO back in September 2015. Pennock couldn’t be happier with the final result and has even tested out the articulation, which he says “holds up great.”

he summer temperature at the Monsters & Tacos at 4 Wheel Parts in Redondo Beach on October 10, 2015 topped triple digits, but the scorching heat didn’t stop lifted truck and Jeep enthusiasts from coming to the meet to be with friends and talk to company reps displaying at the event. Wahoo’s Fish Tacos filled everyone’s bellies and Monster Energy made sure people were hydrated while checking out all the lifted trucks and Jeeps that showed up for the meet. Enthusiasts were also able to see the SEMA Cares X Rugged Ridge Jeep designed by Arianny Celeste that was on display inside the 4 Wheels Parts store showroom. The truck and Jeep meet concluded with presenting Tim Grachen with the Best LIfted Truck/Jeep trophy for his Pre-Runner style Project Silver Bullet Toyota Tundra and Redline Truck Club getting the Biggest Truck club trophy. he first ever Lifted Truck Nationals off-road show and concert was held on September 18 - 20th, 2015 at Branson Cedars Resort in Ridgedale, MO. The show was presented by American Force Wheels and hosted by Branson Cedars Resort and Keg Media. As the first year for the event, more than 200 registered trucks and Jeeps came out to showcase their builds, with many SEMA-quality trucks in attendance. Aside from all the custom rides, the show also featured numerous vendors, showing off their latest and greatest products, such as Undercover Bed Covers, Off-Road Life Apparel, American Force Wheels, Rigid Industries, Fusion Bumpers, Iron Cross Automotive and many more. There was also plenty of food and drink vendors, with Budweiser one of the show’s sponsors, as well as a special playground area for kids. They had national recording artists play a Friday night kick-off concert and a Saturday night after party concert, with performances by Cypress Spring, Sarah Ross, Demun Jones, Mic Adams, Moccasin Creek, Big Chuk, Megan Ruger, Lenny Cooper, Mic Adams and Jawga Boyz. With a successful first year in the books, the team is looking forward to next year’s show and they’ve already planned a special Friday night Lifted Truck Parade and Cruise to kick off the weekend.

he Chinese calendar indicated that 2015 was the “Year of the Sheep,” but here at LFTD& LVLD we believed it was the “Year of the Lifted Truck”...well, at least it was at the 2015 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV. With consumer confidence slightly improving and gas prices dropping by more than $1.00 per gallon at the pumps nationwide in the last couple of years, America’s love for Jeeps and full-size trucks has swelled. The LFTD& LVLD display outside the Las Vegas Convention Center South Hall was evidence of this current trend, with TIS Off-Road Wheels, Dropstars Off-Road Wheels and GRID Off-Road Wheels leading the surge with new wheel designs that make you look good driving on city streets or wheelin’ out on dirt roads. Toyo Tire’s outdoor video screening of Recoil 2 was another affirmation that lifted trucks are cool and exciting, which saw off-road racing champion BJ Baldwin drifting and jumping through urban and off-road hurdles that brought out the kid in all of us. And all that was just on the outside. The pageantry of new products for Jeeps and trucks proliferated within all the three halls of the Convention Center and echoes from showgoers amazed at the amount of lifted rides was a recurring theme throughout the week. Established names in the off-road and lifted game like Fab Fours, Skyjacker, ARE Accessories, Wild Boar OffRoad, Bushwacker, Westin, BDS Suspensions, Rigid Industries, and Rugged Ridge all showcased unique vehicle builds that displayed their respective new product offerings to demonstrate why they’re on top of their game and pushing the off-road category to new heights. Not to be outdone, our parent company introduced its new DUB IR luxury window tint. This new window film features state-of-the-art technology that reduces the absorption of infrared light, which allows your ride to stay cooler on the inside even though it’s like an inferno outside. SEMA 2015 has definitely set the tone for a huge 2016 and we can’t wait to see all these great products out on the streets, trails and shows!
