n case you haven’t noticed, the SEMA Show is a big deal for everyone involved in the automotive aftermarket and lifestyle. The SEMA Crunch is the last minute stretch known industry-wide when everybody scrambles to get things done in time for the big show. The majority of builders experience this as they put the final touches on their projects. Some are barely done days before the vehicles get shipped out to Sin City, while there are a few still wrenching hours before it needs to be showcased for the very first time, and there are even those who finish up during the week. Hell, we even feel the SEMA Crunch as we try to finish this magazine and pack as much eye candy and inspo as we can for your enjoyment when we bring freshly printed magazine copies to the show. In fact, the majority of the vehicles in this issue, as with all our others, have started out as builds that made it to past SEMA Shows. Calvin Chapleau’s white #MoneyTrapJeep wasn’t going to be much, but once he got the call that he had an opportunity to build a Jeep for SEMA, he went right to work to make sure he made the most of the chance.

David Williams spent years owning and building bagged full-size and mini trucks, but decided to switch things up with a lifted 2016 GMC Sierra! His experience definitely showed as he flawlessly created a SEMA-worthy truck that was actually on display in the LFTD& LVLD section! A.R.E. Acessories shows us why they’re the gold standard of the industry with their special gold-toned Ford F-150 that demonstrates their Midas touch for showcasing the right vehicles in the perfect arena. Cambered Customs took a planned simple build all the way to another level and built what they call Big Blue. Be sure to check out this feature on this GMC Sierra and you’ll see why. And their own Jeep build is the last under that name as they transition into their new marque, C.L.O.A.K USA, which commemorates their new chapter in their business and their American pride. Doetsch Off-Road builds have also blessed the pages with several of his Jeeps. His specialty in creating themed Jeeps that are both show quality and fully off-road functional is what

keeps us coming back. He recently teamed up with Grizzly Coolers to create Project Permafrost which was built to tackle the frozen tundra! Customizing can be a family affair, which is totally true for the Rodriquez family, who show off their preference and style for Ram Trucks, each customizing it to their own tastes! And if you love alternative rock music and live in L.A., chances are, you’ve heard of Jay “Lighting” Tilles on KROQ, who actually combined his love for work and trucks to build his “ROQ Crusher” Chevy Silverado Dually that acts as a marketing rig for the radio station. We also have some coverage of some of our favorite annual shows, Lifted Truck Nationals and the Lucas Oil Off-Road Expo! e’ve all heard the age-old debate of price vs value. Just because something is the highest price doesn’t make it the best product. Likewise, just because something is the cheapest doesn’t make it the best value. In this article, we’ll talk about price vs value as it relates to window tints.

There are two key things to consider as you weigh what type of window tint you should choose for your vehicle. The goal is to get the best value for whatever money you spend and the goal of this article is to help you achieve that.

The truth is that nearly any traditional dyed film will at minimum fade over time even if it does not change color. These films are usually the least expensive tint offered at a shop. The issue is that even if it looks great and is inexpensive on day one, but does not hold up for more than a couple of years, is that really a good value? A good value is having a film that looks and performs the way you want it to on day 1 and on the last day that you own the vehicle without overpaying to get that result. Ask questions and read the fine print to make sure you are getting a good value and not just a low price.

How Long Will The Window Tint Last? While many window tint brands carry a lifetime warranty these days, it is important to read the fine print. Often what is classified as a failure covered by warranty might not be the same as what you might classify as failure. For example, many films warranty against color change, but not against fading. So, if the films does not change color, but fades to a lighter shade over time, it is not a warrantable failure. You have a film that is now far lighter than what you wanted with no warranty recourse.

Am I Just Paying for the Name? While buying a window film from a reputable company that will be around to take care of a warranty is important, not overpaying just because of the name on the box is important also. This happens all the time with many products. One that we see over and over relates to Bosch lighting parts for vehicles. Often, Bosch is the OE supplier for a given part to a vehicle manufacturer. When a part needs to be replaced, you can go to the dealership and buy the part in the car manufacturer’s box or you can buy the same exact

part in a Bosch box for usually much less. We can think of situations where we were able to get the same exact part, built to the same specifications, with even the same part number, in a Bosch box for more 50% less than we would have paid to get that item in the car company’s packaging. There are instances where the same can be said for window tint. You really need to compare the specifications and performance of a variety of films. You might find that some brands of window film charge significantly more for a product that performs no better, looks the same and has the same warranty as something that costs half the price. We hope that this brief article gives you some things to look for to ensure that you get the best value on your next tint job. os Angeles, California, “The City of Angels”, is a place where millions of people come to turn their dreams into reality. If you can imagine it, it can happen in L.A. Known to fans as “Lightning,” Jay Tilles is no stranger to those dreams turned realities. As a longtime resident of Southern California and a radio personality for KROQ-FM for the past 26 years, he has seen more than his fair share of entertainment and customization. In fact, he himself has been a part of that scene, owning everything from a lowered Mini Cooper to a lifted one-ton dually. The most common form of mobile advertisement for many radio stations is typically your standard econoline style van. They serve a great purpose, but Jay thought, “Why be ordinary?”

But before Jay got started, he said to himself, “What if I built a crazy truck that could be shown on KROQ’s behalf at events all over L.A. and Orange County?” After a few meetings, emails with attorneys, and a rendering or two, the station agreed and Jay was off and running. It would be the first time the station had ever permitted a privately-owned vehicle to adorn its logo. But what goes better together than rock ‘n roll and a lifted truck? With nearly three decades in the entertainment industry, Jay knew exactly who he wanted to be a part of the build. “I bought the truck in 2014 from CARMAX and had it shipped to L.A. from Arizona,” he details, adding that he searched for about a year and couldn’t find any dually to fit his needs in So. Cal. “I had very specific wants. It had to be a pre-owned truck with low mileage and be black or white. At the time, the goal was to buy a truck that would pull my 36 Hallett [powerboat], but as soon as I bought it, I, as do with every vehicle, immediately decided to customize it and, of course, bring it to SEMA!”

WHAT IF I BUILT A CRAZY TRUCK THAT COULD BE SHOWN ON KROQ’S BEHALF AT EVENTS ALL OVER L.A. AND ORANGE COUNTY?”

So the SEMA crunch began around May of 2015, with hours and hours of work ahead of him. The crunch timeline started with the dually spending a few months at Banks Power, followed by the suspension, custom fuel tanks, entertainment, wrap, wheels, tires, brakes, and lastly, the bumpers and roof rack were custombuilt simultaneously. The build was finished the night before the vehicle was set to roll into the 2015 SEMA Show. Shortly after the show, he updated just about everything on it. Wheels, tires, wrap, suspension, roof rack - a complete makeover for the following year’s SEMA Show. Since then, the truck has been shown at more than 70 events, including concert, festivals, car shows, truck shows, Monster Jam, SuperCross, off-road expos and the list goes on. “Occasionally, we place a DJ in the back of the truck and roll out the CargoGlide, which acts like a stage.”

With so many new mods, it was hard for Jay to pick out his favorites, but he still obliged and listed his faves; “Aside from the incredible work that Gale and his team at Banks Power did to the powertrain, the most notable parts of the truck is the aluminum roof rack and stainless steel front and rear bumpers. Designed by ICI, the Magnum bumpers were water jet cut and finished welded by Rick Wright at Wright Designs. They’re works of art.”

riginally founded in 1969, A.R.E. made its industry footprint in engineering aluminum truck caps and storage buildings. From then on, they’ve become an industry leader for thousands of different truck accessories. With custom truck builds soaring to new heights, the folks at A.R.E. knew they needed something to set them apart at the world’s largest automotive showcase, the SEMA Show. “We didn’t just want to do another project build, we wanted something more,” mentions Bryan Mutchler, A.R.E.’s marketing manager. 66

“With this intent, we partnered with companies and products that radiate the gold standard to bring our Ford F-150 to life.” The initial process started in July 2016 and veteran builder Trent Van Arsdalen of Trent’s Trick Upholstery in Baltimore, Ohio, was unanimously chosen to lead this project. The 2016 Gold Standard Ford F-150 project truck built by A.R.E. Accessories brings the best products in the industry together in one build. But Trent had some different inspiration in mind for the project. “I wanted the truck to have a pro touring style,

with air vents in the bumpers and a unique style of wheel choice. I didn’t want this build to be your standard four-wheel drive truck with run-of-themill accessories. I have had a feature vehicle in the SEMA show since the mid-’90s, I needed to build a game changer for A.R.E.” And that game-changer for Trent was the custom gold tonal paint job that immediately reaches out and grabs your attention. But that’s just the beginning since this truck is built up from bumper to bumper to show off the gold standard of products, on a gold standard truck – the Ford F-150. The bumpers, suspension, and all the exterior trim were painted to match the body for a smooth appearance. They also mounted fog lights in the exterior side mirrors, which is

actually a never seen before trick! The A.R.E. CX Revo cap with TopperEZLift system protects the TVs, storage system and charging station located in the bed of the truck, showcasing A.R.E.’s latest products. The entire interior was done in Alea leather, extremely high-end and durable. Trent then fabricated billet aluminum inverted speaker pods, along with exterior badging custom machined and the large A.R.E. emblem in the bed. The chassis was also completely repainted, and a Corsa stainless steel exhaust system was installed for added performance. One of Trent’s favorite parts of the build was the cap lift system. “I designed a two-pin plug for the third brake light so there are no wires showing when the cap is all the way up,” he describes.

The Gold Standard build was the epitome of the industry known “SEMA crunch,” completed in just over eight weeks from start to finish. First, Trent installed the cap and the front bumper. Then he mocked up all customized pieces, and bed structure. Once the customization was complete, he sent the truck to paint so he worked on the interior pieces and custom upholstery. When the truck returned from paint, Trent didn’t have much time left before the trip to Vegas. All the custom pieces were then installed along with the suspension and wheels and tires. The build was completed just a few days shy of the 2016 SEMA Show and was the focal point of the Ford booth. It gained so much popularity, A.R.E. decided it will return for its second year in row at the 2017 SEMA Show!

AM trucks have been around since the early 1980s and with every new generation, they’ve matured into a vehicle that is not only powerful and capable, but also loaded with creature comforts. And even though the first and second generation RAMs weren’t all that attractive, the latest editions are easy on the eyes, which explains why there’s so many lifted to the heavens. The Rodriguez family of Delano, California, is a RAM family, having used only RAM trucks on their family-operated Pistachio farm. “Our grandpa always had RAMs,” says Steve, the family’s frontman. “We just continued the tradition.” Not only did they continue their grandfather’s legacy, they built on it as the family has produced a trio of towering trucks that anyone would be proud to have in their stable. With three different family members - Steve, his brother Joey and cousin Zeke - of course, the styling is going to differ from rig to rig. To the novice onlooker, the three vehicles are simply lifted show trucks that just so happen to be the same make and model. However, the more astute truck enthusiast can notice from a mile away that they vary considerably and have distinctly unique themes. 81

The first in the family to put together their RAM was Joey, with the whole clan helping build his 2012 RAM with its matte pearl white wrap, neon and chrome suspension and Snugtop camper shell. And Joey’s rig isn’t lacking in the performance department as it features a Black Market Performance S475 turbo kit with Industrial Injection 150hp injectors and nitrous. A Mega Jr. Suncoast transmission and 4.88 gears front and rear make sure all that power makes it to the pavement properly. After Joey’s rig was completed, the family began to build the other two. Zeke’s silver 2500 with its magenta throwback graphics is an ode to the sport trucks of the ’90s and the powder coated suspension components are a striking reminder that this RAM can shut down any show. Zeke’s RAM boasts an insane Krazy Kustoms suspension lift, 24x16” American Force wheels and 40” Nitto tires.

But, the Rodriguez RAM that stands out the most from the trifecta is Steve’s 2014 2500. Not only is it the tallest of the bunch with an 18” lift, it also features the most substantial body mods of the crew. Steve opted to combine multiple genres with a pre-runner theme, featuring wider fenders, cage-mounted spare and round KC lights above the cab. Of course, everything else about the truck is strictly show status, but the hat tip to the desert pre-runners that the family grew up admiring on the beach is commendable. For the color palette, Steve opted for a subtle matte black finish with candy teal accents.

Although these three RAMS are quite different, underneath the body they’re all virtually identical. The three Rodriguez trucks feature Krazy Kustom Fabrication lifts and massive American Force wheels. The diameters and options may vary, but the chassis components are the glue that holds these farm trucks together.

avid Williams is no stranger to modified trucks, having spent years owning and building bagged full-size and mini trucks. But after years of slamming trucks to the ground, and coming across an insane deal on a 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT, he wanted to try his skillset on something different and create a lifted custom. “The plan was to build a show rig/daily driver that would also serve as a rolling business card for my shop, The Kustom Edge, here in Texas,” he says. Having a vision already in mind, David knew that he wanted the the Sierra to wear a black and green color combination. To help him with the rest, he went to KEG Media for the complete rendering. Although he stuck pretty close to the original design, he admits to giving the painter more leeway when it came to the flames, a design accent he’s particularly fond of.

With a desire to showcase the best products out there on his first lifted truck build, David went with a 12” Bulletproof suspension and had all the parts powder coated in Illusion Sour Apple by Prismatic Powders. A set of 22x14 Dropstar DS652 wheels wrapped in 37x13.50R22 Nitto Trail Grappler tires finish off its stance. The Sierra’s exterior was enhanced by its Hammerhead Armor front and rear bumpers and nerf bars that really make it look tough, in addition to its custommixed green flames that match the suspension. Purple pinstriping is seen around the flames for the extra detail David likes to add in his builds. Avec LED Lighting provides the GMC with bright lights for night drives, while extra accessories include a SnugTop Snuglid SL tonneau cover, BedRug bed liner, and a Fastway 10” drop trailer hitch. With two months to complete, David found that the biggest challenge was finding time for the truck build while also completing another SEMA vehicle at the same time. “The truck wasn’t entirely finished until we got to Vegas, which was a bit nerve wracking!” he details.

“It’s been a huge success, winning multiple awards everywhere I show it; everything from Top 100 to first in class and even a Best Lifted Truck award,” David confesses. When it was first unveiled at the 2016 SEMA Show, the responses David received were all positive, which says a lot given it was his first real lifted truck project. “I’m very happy with the results; only thing I’d do different is a bigger rim/tire combo. It’s one of my top three favorite builds I’ve done and I’ve built a lot of vehicles.”

s a customizer, you can easily get carried away as you’re trying to turn your concept into reality. You start off doing small tweaks, but before you know it, you’ve completely stripped down the exterior of your ride and left with only the bare frame hanging down from chains on the rafters of your shop. That’s exactly what ended up happening to Scott Kangas of Cambered Customs in Van Buren, AR. “Originally, the truck was black and all I was going to do was lift it and add 35” tall tires on 20s and be done with it,” he confesses. “But as soon as we pulled the truck into the shop, we lost control.” Ask any other builder and they’ll surely agree that losing control is a common side effect, but to remedy this, Kangas called up Robbie at Keg Media for some help on how to make it all come together for the GMC Sierra. Kangas wanted to build something “big and wide” for a really aggressive and bold look, which is exactly what Keg Media delivered in their rendering. From there, all the shop had to do was put the puzzle pieces into place for a totally transformed Sierra.

“It was a fun ride choosing products that we wanted to use on this build,” he says. “We wanted to use products we sold in our store and that captured the design we were looking for.” One of the more drastic changes was the color as a blue exterior was chosen with orange accents for the suspension and undercarriage, which is why he nicknamed it “Big Blue.” The full frame-off build includes a slew of new mods and accessories, but it’s the fenders and bedsides that Kangas loves the most. “I love how wide the truck is,” he mentions. “The extra width keeps the truck proportional to the lift and the aggressive wheel and tire package we chose. The details are truly what differentiates this build from others. Practically every bolt has been turned and painted on this build.” 112

Due to the amount of modifications and details, a majority of people sometimes find it difficult to tell what kind of truck it is, demonstrating its uniqueness from other lifted trucks. “I love this truck. It really encompasses all that we dreamed it would turn into and more,” he says. “But the greatest part about building the truck was getting our close friends and family involved. If it weren’t for the team effort, we wouldn’t have finished the build.” Currently, the truck is being used as a location beacon for Cambered Customs and everyone in the neighborhood knows “Big Blue.” Kangas makes sure it does more than just market his shop and showcases it in parades and charity events, too, in addition to enjoying it with his family every chance he gets! 114

2014 JEEP WRANGLER

hen Calvin Chapleau of Cochrane, Ontario, Canada, brought home his Jeep Wrangler, he didn’t think much of it. He initially bought it as a daily driver for his wife and to take out for weekend spins himself. But two days later, he got a call that would change the future of his Wrangler. “Eric from ECD Customs called to tell me that he had an opportunity to place my Jeep at SEMA,” he explains. “From that moment, I knew I only had two months to strip it down and have it ready for the biggest automotive show of the year!” From the jump, he knew it wasn’t going to see much off-roading, so he went for a “nice, clean look” instead of a full-on trail rig. The most attention-grabbing detail is in the form of a flashy wrap inspired by Vegas’ No. 1 attribute – gambling. “We called it #MoneyTrapJeep for the money-inspired wrap because it was headed to Vegas,” he says. “What better theme is suited for Sin City!?!”

Calvin didn’t cut any corners when it came to choosing products, only going with the best in parts to be on display at the industry’s biggest event of the year, having Uptown Service Centre put in countless hours to make sure it was ready for the show. Aside from the ECD Customs printed wrap (installed by Chucky Courty) sporting money graphics, other standout mods on the Jeep include the 6” Skyjacker long arm suspension that was powder coated white to match the Jeep, TIS 535 wheels wrapped in Fury Off-Road 37x13.50R22 tires and Off Camber Fabrications bumpers. The end result was a stunner of a Jeep that was a hit at SEMA and later at the Lone Star Throwdown in Texas. “Everyone loved it! It’s definitely my favorite since it was my first real SEMA build, but it certainly isn’t my last! Be on the lookout for my F-250 Powerstroke with RYD Motorsports at SEMA 2017!”

ave Doetsch has done it again…! He’s taken the most capable off-road rig in existence (according to him) and turned it into a themed ride that not only looks good at shows, but is also more than capable of handling any terrain you throw at it. This one in particular is meant to take on the frozen tundra in style, collaborating with Grizzly Coolers for this arctic winter build dubbed “Project Permafrost.” “The design goal was to showcase a capable Jeep that could make its way through the frozen tundra, while blending in with its surroundings,” Dave describes, adding that Grizzly Coolers was very involved with creating the JK. “ We went back and forth on design elements like style of tire (all terrain vs. mud terrain), what size suspension lift, full roof rack vs partial, etc. – in order to replicate what would be needed for a cold journey in the wilderness. Overall, the design stayed true to the build theme.”

Parts make or break the project and in this Project Perfmafrost, the build was used to showcase a new product that was a joint venture between Grizzly Coolers and Alpine Electronics, called the Alpine PWD-CB1 In-Cooler Entertainment (ICE) System. It combines a fully functional Grizzly 56 quart cooler as well as an amplified (12V/120V) component speaker system with Bluetooth control. “At SEMA 2016, the cooler was on display inside Project Permafrost, so that the public could try out the innovative features,” he mentions. “Beyond that, we were also excited to showcase Katzkin’s new ZKINTECH leather seating. It offers a popular design on the face of the seats, with custom accent stitching and logos.”

From start to finish, the build was completed in just under six weeks, with it being first shown at the 2016 Offroad Expo in Pomona, CA inside the JCR Offroad booth, followed by the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Since then, it’s been on display at several off-road events throughout the Southwest, like the 2017 Easter Jeep Safari event in Moab. “Everyone loves the layout of the build and can appreciate the theme and effort that went into it.” Currently, it’s being used as a display vehicle for the Doetsch Off-Road shop located in Chandler, Arizona. “We’re always pushing the bar on each build, and this project allowed us to utilize a few new products, making the build unique relative to those that came before it!”

ome of the best businesses are birthed from side hustles. As a firefighter in Denton, Texas, Jason Nalley’s empire began as he conjured up a trade to churn out some extra cash. Jason began spraying bed liners as a side job and thanks to his quality and professionalism, his business gained momentum. Word spread quickly that there was a guy around town doing a better job lining beds than all of the big names that have become synonymous with the industry. But Jason’s big break came when the largest vehicle customizer in the area gave him an opportunity to beat a bigname competitor. Jason blew the competition’s doors off and earned the gig, cementing his side hustle into his main hustle.

When Jason began the venture, it was just him in a 500-square-foot building. The business, Camoliner, expanded, ultimately employing 18 people in a 16,000-square-foot facility. Unfortunately, the company funneling the majority of the jobs to Camoliner eventually turned off the spigot, thus forcing Jason’s company to downsize significantly. But that hasn’t stopped Jason from hustling even harder. And that’s what this Jeep Wrangler build symbolizes – the rebooting of Jason’s business, as it would be the last build under the Camoliner nameplate and the first with the new outfit, C.L.O.A.K. USA.

With this build, Jason and his wife, Darla, wanted to lean on companies that produced American-made products. Jason conjured up this idea at SEMA, as he walked the aisles and counted the mind-numbing amount of cheap knock-off brands. Thankfully, plenty of sponsors latched onto this idea, which made the build even more special. “Bodyguard Bumpers took care of us the most, and they’re right here in Texas,” Jason says. He also took a liking to Skyjacker for their core values. “They’re a strong Christian company and I really liked them,” he mentions. Another company that was quite eager to come on board was Cooper Tires, which manufactures their tires in Ohio, Arkansas and Mississippi.

The goal for this build was simple: to highlight their company’s expertise. Sticking with the “Made in the U.S.A.” theme, Jason wanted to encompass an overall aesthetic that represented the entire country. Ultimately, they settled on a map in different colored protective coating that spans from coast to coast with Texas on the hood – as it should. The process to achieve such a complicated design certainly can’t be tackled by just anyone with a spray gun. Jason and his team began with a tan base liner, layering the base coat and sealing it with a top coat – over and over again to get it just right. The result is impressive and something you truly need to see and feel in person to fully appreciate. “From about 20 feet away, everyone thinks it’s a wrap,” Jason explains. “Pictures just don’t capture it. That’s why we like to have it at places like SEMA,

so people can walk up and touch it.” On top of the obvious exterior modifications, Jason also enjoys the new Cooper Tires. Originally hoping for 37s, Cooper only had the unreleased 40” tires available at the time of the build. “The Cooper 40 actually weighs less than most 37s and they’re super quiet,” Jason proclaims. “That’s my new favorite tire; I’m sold.” As their pride-and-joy sits complete, Jason and Darla Nalley have used this build to catapult their new venture, C.L.O.A.K. into the forefront and establish themselves yet again as leaders in their industry.

he annual Lifted Truck Nationals went down September 9th through the 10th and provided a weekend filled with badass trucks, booths and fun! The event by Keg Media was again held in Ridgedale, MO, at the beautiful Branson Cedars Resort was presented by American Force Wheels and hosted by Road Armor bumpers. More than 500 lifted trucks, Jeeps and UTVs were in attendance, which were the center of the show. The cruise on Friday night was another highlight, led by American Force wheels in downtown Branson. The afterparty was held Saturday night with DJ Get Low spinning the latest tunes and helping give away prizes for winners of the night’s games. Best of Show went to Don Gardner with his 2016 Chevy HD2500 from Des Moines, Iowa, while Longest Distance went to Sean O’Hara from Chaplin, CT. But these were only two of 100 different awards given out at the show, which included more than $33,000 in raffles from sponsors including wheels, tires, bumpers, steps, lift kits and so much more!
