Balance and harmony between the different components and wide open spaces An ambitious plan, involving Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort in a five year period of significant structural alterations. Behind this ambitious project, in the capable hands of the architect, Alberto Cecchetto, is the mission to inspire emotions. When talking about the philosophy behind the project, the architect begins with a reflection that concerns the hospitality business in general. Tourism is a dynamic economy, bringing with it new sensations and requiring an on-going and harmonious re-organisation of space... It is not simply a matter of enhancement or restyling, but the basic idea of restoring balance and giving the appropriate priority to each of the parts that make up a complex as vast as Du Lac, which comprises various buildings with differing characteristics, as well as the great asset of the park, whose potential must be maximised. The project is huge and started in the year 2015 with the creation of the Molo44 Lounge Bar & Bistrot, followed, in 2016, by the redesign of the main entrance and car park, and is due to continue with the reconstruction of the reception area to focus on the park, creating a large, new terrace.

What will be the most remarkable changes for the new season? A new, covered swimming pool is planned for the re-opening, that can be enjoyed all through mid-season: it will be a glass showcase with a terrace, in the middle of the park, close to the bamboo and the internal pond. The pool itself will be illuminated, giving the idea of swimming amongst trees, plants and bamboo. Once again, the park will be the star of the show and the architecture will highlight the nature that is at its core. Another grand improvement will be the restyling of the Restaurant Du Parc, at the heart of the resort’s dining service. Here too, the plan has been developed to underpin the vital importance of the park, offering vast windows through which to enjoy the lush vegetation. But Cecchetto’s architectural project does not finish here. Indeed, it will continue right up until 2020 with other significant developments – there are many more surprises in store!
The new, covered swimming pool
2016/2020 The grand renovation project for Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort all started with the re-design and expansion of the terrace of the Molo44 Lounge Bar & Bistrot and continued with the restyling of the main entrance and car park, as well as the rebuilding of several chalets and all of our “continental” bedrooms. All of these improvements have been greatly appreciated by our guests and many of them have told us how much they approve of the changes and have expressed their curiosity concerning forthcoming changes in the near future. The new, covered swimming pool is already at an advanced stage of construction, whereas numerous other new plans will come to life over the next few years, so for now, we can share some virtual images with you. We will, however, continue to keep our loyal clientele up-todate with progress regarding all these projects and other initiatives offered by Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort. 2017 Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort

THE PARK TURTLES, DUCKS AND FISH, FROGS AND SQUIRRELS, - THEY’RE ALL AT HOME HERE! The grandiose Park at Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort is a natural oasis of rare and precious beauty, a landscaped area covering 7 hectares and home to 200 species of exotic and Mediterranean plants, imposing, ancient trees and a myriad of little animals who dwell near the charming little ponds.

The park, which is an incredible resource for bio-diversity, boasts an unbelievable heritage of important forest species from all over the planet. These include the large, rare Chinese Sequoia, the Dawn Redwood, also known as the water fir, the Bare Cypress and the Southern Cypress, a giant reaching 30 metres in height. Then there is the Kashmir Cypress and the Camphor tree, the giant Western Red Cedar and the Japanese Pagoda Tree, all truly rare and precious specimens and brought together here in a mini paradise. As you walk through this splendid park, you will be shrouded in the many floral perfumes that reign supreme, such as magnolia, holm oak, oleander, palm trees, bamboo, Russian sage and myrtle, (not to forget the incredible scent of the Osmanthus Fragrans – or fragrant olive in Autumn).
The park is a green gem that captures both your eye and your soul – the perfect place to take a stroll and enjoy the silence of nature. It was once the garden of the Summer residence of Count Carl Justus Torresani, a Hapsburg dignitary, and was then subsequently purchased by Bartolomeo Bernardinelli, chief magistrate of the town of Riva del Garda. After living here for a few years, it was later transformed into a hotel, the management of which was entrusted to the Witzmann family, who continued to run it until the Second World War broke out. During the war, the building was used as a military hospital, but thanks to the Zontini family, it subsequently resumed life as a hotel. At the start of the fifties, the family decided to renovate, expand and improve the building, enhancing the sumptuous, luxuriant park on the shores of the lake.

You can enjoy the wind and waves on a catamaran, accompanied by expert instructors, or hire boards and sails of every variety and you can attend the sailing and windsurfing school, taking part in intensive courses for children and adults. These are carried out with a maximum of three pupils and the instructor is always there on board with you, to keep theory time down to the minimum and get started straight away in the water. In this way, after just 4 or 5 lessons, it is possible to learn the necessary technique to be able to independently pilot the craft and take the exam to obtain the VDWS sailing license on a catamaran or board, recognised all over the world. The same expertise is to be found in our windsurfing courses. Thanks to the latest methods and the use of audio-visual aids, new, rapid-learning methods are available which mean that you can learn or improve windsurfing skills in a fraction of the time. Results are guaranteed: 12 hours for beginners and 9 hours for leaving the water and for gliding. Younger athletes, from 6 years upwards, will be at home here too. Children’s sailing courses are a speciality at Sailing du Lac, thanks to a very individual teaching method, well-trained instructors and a wide range of craft, specially designed for children, enabling them to achieve amazing results in very little time. The same applies to windsurfing. Learning the basic technique becomes an unforgettable adventure for little surfers, because the name of the game for all our courses is fun!
As well as being number one in terms of water sports, Sailing Du Lac also has the upper hand when it comes to the many other sporting activities that can be practised in the area, such as climbing, “via ferrata” steel cable climbing trails, hiking and the adrenalin rush of canyoning, that can be enjoyed in the stunning gorges and canyons of our lake and nearby Lake Ledro. Guests are accompanied by expert guides who belong to the CEC (Commission Européenne de Canyon). Of course, no sports centre would be complete without cycling, and Sailing Du Lac has a top notch bicycle park, ranging from city bikes for family outings along the numerous cycle paths in the area to the tougher mountain bikes for more demanding rides. The centre also organises tours of varying levels of difficulty with expert leaders. Even the slightly less fit can enjoy some of the more arduous climbs in the saddle of modern, ecological e-bikes with pedal assistance.

Torbole and Riva are the destinations for sailors and surfers from all over the world, attracted by the many winds that blow across the northern end of Lake Garda. In particular, the “Ora” – a strong wind that blows from the south, and the “Pelèr” – a tingling north wind, have made the shores that stretch from Riva to Torbole famous. The area is a popular choice amongst lovers of windsurfing and sailing who see it as the ideal location for enjoying these sports. The noble sailing clubs such as the Riva Sailing Club, the Torbole Sailing Club and the Torbole Windsurfing Club are witness to the tradition and importance of the location, which is now opening up to other sporting activities such as kitesurfing and Stand Up Paddle. From water ….. to the mountains. The cliff faces and steel cableways are many – all waiting to be climbed and conquered. From the easiest to the most demanding, you can put yourself to the test along the trails that have been opened up by those who have written the history of climbing, such as the mighty Manolo and the great Cesare Maestri. Every year, Arco – the climbing mecca – is visited by thousands of young fans of this sport, celebrated at the end of Summer with the Rock Master competition, an international event that brings great talent from the world of sports climbing to the Sarca Valley. Hiking and walking provide a backdrop to the latest trends, even the most extreme, such as base-jumping and slack-line between rocks and precipices. However, in the Garda Trentino area, there is also no shortage of opportunities to enjoy the more “aristocratic” sports, such as horseriding and golf. Amongst the numerous golf courses to be found around Lake Garda, The Bogliaco Golf Club, in Toscolano Maderno, with its 18 holes par 69, offers guests from Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort a discount of 20% on the green fee. The Rendena Golf Club in Bocenago, 9 holes par 35, designed by the architect Fulvio Bani, is situated at an altitude of 750 metres and boasts a driving range of over 250 metres. The Altogarda Golf Club also has a driving range and is just 2 kilometres away from the resort.

However, it is cycling in all its many guises that has really taken over in recent years. The mountain bike reigns supreme in the Upper Garda area, where thousands of bicycle lovers whizz along the trails, adrenalin pumping, enjoying the breathtaking views. In May, for over twenty years now, Riva del Garda has hosted the European Bike Festival, an event that revolves entirely around bicycles and a fixed date in the international mountain bike calendar.

From downhill to cross country, and racing bikes too, the possibilities to have fun on two wheels in this area are endless

There is no shortage of adventure parks in this area: the two closest to Riva del Garda are the Elias Adventure Park, with trails suitable for various age groups and the Busatte Adventure Park, which sits above Torbole. Then there are the more famous and popular parks, such as Caneva World and Gardaland – Italy’s biggest fun park.
The walk through the city centre may not be long, but it is certainly atmospheric, and just a little further afield, an endless choice of excursions awaits you. One such easy, and very beautiful walk, will take you up to the “Bastione” – one of the town’s main symbols. It is situated on the slopes of Mount Rocchetta and was built in the 15th century as a military emplacement from which to protect the ancient town of Riva. From there, the view across the lake and Riva is quite exceptional, and spectacular on nights when there is a full moon. For the fitter visitor, it is possible to keep on climbing up to the little church of Santa Barbara, built by miners working on the conduits for the new electrical power station. You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to walks – long or short and no matter how difficult or easy.

Agraria Riva del Garda PASSION QUALITY THE LOCAL AREA “Agraria” is a traditional company, well established in the wine and oil sector of the Upper Garda area, promoting the culture of quality and lays claim to a strong link to the local territory. In 2016 a new bottle was designed for extra virgin olive oil – simply and elegant, as befits the quality of its contents. An engraved symbol recalls the geological characteristic of Mount Brione, the undulating land, the waves and ripples of Lake Garda, as well as the shape of the olive leaf. “Le Selezioni” is a range of high quality, typical wines, showing off the top end wines that the Upper Garda area offers. These wines are now on sale with a new, elegant design and labels with black and white photos illustrating the ancient vineyards from which they are produced. (www.agririva.it) 46

SINCE 1724 MARCHESI GUERRIERI GONZAGA
Tenuta San Leonardo Over a thousand years ago it was a monastery and for more than three centuries it has been the residence of the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga family who are its passionate custodians. These days, the Tenuta San Leonardo is a garden full of vines and roses, sheltered by the imposing mountains that protect it from the cold, north wind, while the valley regales it with the warmth of Lake Garda. La Tenuta is an ancient world, where the patient process of winemaking results in wines that are the absolute, authentic jewels in the crown of Italian wines, noted for their freshness, harmony ad an innate elegance. Since 1963, the Armanini family has brought all the freshness of mountain fish to the table, processing and selling the finest examples of trout and char-fish bred in their own premises in the beautiful Chiese Valley in Trentino. Pure, spring water, clear and fresh from the mountain peaks together with strict feeding protocols without the use of chemical additives, respect for the natural life cycle of these sought-after fish species. These are the ingredients that make it possible to provide a fresh, genuine and natural product for your table. 50 years of experience and craftsmanship, in the quest for quality and respect of natural methods – family know-how that has become a tradition. The restyling of the Restaurant Du Parc This year, the Restaurant Du Parc has undergone a restyling, overseen by the architect Alberto Cecchetto, whose aim has been to emphasise the closeness of the Resort’s park. Our guests will certainly appreciate the modern, elegant lines and the restaurant’s new furnishings, and in this area, that has been so completely transformed, naturally our menu has also been completely revisited. We are delighted and proud to announce that this year, dinner at the Restaurant Du Parc will be served as a buffet and enhanced by live cooking from Chef Marco Brink’s team.

Wellness and fitness are just a part of the resort’s prerogatives, which, in 2016, became a theatre in which guests could enjoy pleasurable moments of partying and entertainment. Once again, this year, the evenings at Du Lac et Du Parc kicked off with an aperitif and music at the Capannina and Molo44. Music and exclusive drinks prepared by our barman, together with the atmosphere of the surrounding park make for delightful, unforgettable evenings during the warm Riva evenings. Numerous are the traditional, gastronomic events at Du Lac et Du Parc, such as our oriental style dinner on the Veranda, which was greatly enjoyed by our guests, as was the unforgettable midsummer buffet and that of the mid August celebrations, which once again, as in previous years, were not only an opportunity to sample the delights of our kitchen, but also to have a real party with friends. For some years now, Viale Rovereto, where our hotel is situated, has been home to lively street entertainment. In the warmer, Summer months, the road is closed to traffic and open to the public with music and parties. Du Lac et Du Parc also takes part in the “Xstrada” evenings, with its own DJ and a small bar, like many other places dotted along the street and beach. A wave of music and joy sweeps through the whole town.

Riva del Garda is considered to the the pearl of Lake Garda, nestled in its corner at the northern tip of the lake between luxuriant woods and the intense blue of its waters. The charm of the surrounding landscape is a backdrop to beautiful Renaissance palaces, Medieval niches and the works of Giancarlo Maroni, known as the architect of the lake, and best known for having created “il Vittoriale degli Italiani,” the museum and former home of Gabriele D’Annunzio at Gardone Riviera. Maroni was one of the protagonists of the post war rebirth in Riva, after the Austrian occupation, contributing a sort of “italianisation” to the town through his projects. He was responsible for both renovations and new buildings bearing ancient local features, managing to insert them into the lakeside landscape without spoiling it, but giving it a unique, unmistakable style. There are various examples of these buildings in the town, such as the Casa Armani and Casa Bettinazzi, the Benacense sports ground, the Hotel Sole and the Spiaggia degli Olivi – the beach complex built between 1932 and 1934 in Riva, at the edge of which we find the tower, which serves as a lighthouse looking out towards the centre of town, and the Sailing Club, a prestigious establishment which promotes high level international regattas. The building at the “Spiaggia degli Olivi,” dominated by a series of columns that resemble the Garda lemon groves, started life as a bathing establishment and meeting place in which to have fun during long, hot, Summer days. Then in the 1950s and 60s right up until the 1980s it was Riva’s discotheque and the main attraction for both residents and visitors looking for the Riva “dolce vita.” Following significant rebuilding works, the Spiaggia degli Olivi has recently reopened and aims to once more become a symbolic location in Riva. An architectural and engineering gem is the Hydro-Electric Power Station of Riva. It is a majestic, imposing building, facing the lake and another example of D’Annunzio’s architect’s work. It was built in the 1920s and has recently reopened its doors to the public with the latest, multi-media equipment, which provides the opportunity to get to know the place where the waters of Lake Ledro and the Ponale torrent are transformed into electricity before mingling with those of Lake Garda. 2017 Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort

ANCIENT CASTLES AMONGST THE WOODLANDS OF THE UPPER GARDA AREA A timeless world, amongst dense woodland and crenelated walls where majestic turrets are silhouetted against wild, rocky cliffs: the itinerary that takes you past the castles of Trentino and Upper Garda is a fascinating journey steeped in the magic and mystery of bygone times. Arco Castle, a fortress built to defend the town and once home to the Counts of Arco, dominates the valley and the River Sarca from its lofty position atop an imposing limestone cliff. Recent restoration work has returned it to its former glory. The “games room” contains a stunning example of gothic style frescoes dating back to the end of the 1300s and the beginning of the 1400s, depicting ladies playing dice and chess, Saint George and the Dragon, battle scenes and the investiture of a cavalier. Drena Castle, a little further north, is a medieval fortress with an imposing crenelated tower, almost 30 metres high, which rises up from the rocks of the Marocche, a dry, arid, lunar landscape dating back to post-glacial times. Moving yet further northwards, we come across Toblino Castle, which is situated on a small rocky inlet that drops down towards the lake, where its reflection can be seen in the waters of the lake by the same name and is surrounded by parkland. A number of legends exist regarding the castle, the most famous being that of the tragic love story between Carlo Emanuele, prince and bishop of Trento, and a woman named Claudia, who was said to have drowned in the lake. Tenno Castle, which looks out over Lake Garda, is now a private residence. It is noted for the landscape surrounding it and the amazing turquoise waters of nearby Lake Tenno as well as the adjoining villages, especially the splendid medieval “Canale di Tenno.” Built at the end of the 12th century on the site of a prehistoric castle, it sits high up in a strategic position, dominating the main roads that lead from the lower Sarca area to the Giudicarie Valley. 76
Unique in its own way is the landscape that caresses the northern shores of Lake Garda in Trentino. Not only does it offer rare landscapes of undeniable beauty and a perfect environment for sports lovers, but it is also home to art in various forms. Every year there are numerous musical, theatrical and dance events along with the most contemporary artistic expressions.

Castello del Buonconsiglio Museum of the Fashions and Customs of the Trentino People The Buonconsiglio Castle in Trento, which can be found in the centre of the town it symbolises, was once the splendid dwelling of the Prince Bishops, and is now the Provincial Art Museum. It boasts frescoes and other elements from various periods, taking the visitor back to past times. The oldest part, “Castelvecchio,” with its Cycle of the Months in the “Torre Aquila,” is a masterpiece of gothic art, taking us right to the heart of life in court and of the peasants of the late 1300s. The Renaissance building, the “Magno Palazzo,” richly decorated with frescoes, was built for the Prince Bishop Bernardo Clesio. Another wing of the building, called the “Giunta Albertiana,” dates back to the Baroque period.
Every summer, the castle offers a new exhibition alongside numerous other events. Providing an incredible insight into the lives, folklore, religion and traditions of a population, the Museum of the Fashions and Customs of the Trentino People is the most important Italian ethnological museum at regional level. The museum, tucked away inside the mystical setting of an ancient Augustinian convent, has over 12,000 exhibits, including large water machinery, such as the water mill, forge and Venetian sawmill, which tell the story of the farming methods of the Trentino mountains, serving as an ethnographic study centre for the whole of the alpine range.

Verona Verona is a city whose charms are as everlasting as the Shakespearian verses that have made it famous all over the world. It is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful cities in Italy, symbol of the romantic yet tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet. Its name alone evokes an ancient, mysterious fascination: images of ballrooms and market life, lords, ladies and the Scaligeri family, the story of the Montagues and Capulets and of eternal love. All of this is tangible as you walk through the city, amongst austere and elegant palaces, churches, castles and historic cafés in the streets that wind alongside the Adige river. The famous Juliet’s balcony is just a stone’s throw from “Piazza delle Erbe,” the city’s open air sitting room, dating back to imperial times and the pulsing heart of Verona’s social and political life. The mix of different eras and dominations is visible everywhere, in the towers, palaces and statues: the “Palazzo della Ragione” and the “Case Mazzanti” with their Renaissance frescoes, nearby “Piazzadei Signori” with the staue of Dante Alighieri, who lived for many years in Verona, the 84
PIAZZA DELLE ERBE PIAZZA BRA SCALA DELLA RAGIONE GIARDINO GIUSTI ARENA Just a short distance from Lake Garda lies a unique city of undying charm, and a Unesco heritage site.
“Domus Nova” and “Palazzo degli Scaligeri,” lords of the city between 1260 and 1387. From the arch that links “ Palazzo del Capitanio” to “Palazzo della Ragione” you enter the courtyard of the old market where you will see the splendid “Scala della Ragione.” From “Torre dei Lamberti” you can admire a unique, romantic view across the squares and roofs of Verona. In a nearby square you will find the church Santa Maria Antica, from whose courtyard rises the “Arche Scaligere.” Those wishing to explore further will be delighted by the archaeological area of the Scaligeri excavations, while nature lovers will want to visit the Giusti garden with its labyrinth and ancient statues and the rock with its five caves. Piazza Bra is another must-see with its palaces and so are the bridges across the Adige river, including the Castelvecchio and Ponte Pietra, which is the oldest of them. Verona is steeped in history, culminating in the Arena, the amphitheatre that provides a spectacular al fresco backdrop every summer for the famous, prestigious opera season. (www.arena.it)

What people are saying about us... TWO INTERVIEWS WITH OUR GUESTS Interviews by Giorgia Zamboni
We feel at home here, it’s a holiday home for us where, year after year, we come back and meet up with old friends A sensation frequently expressed by guests at Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort, above all by some of them who have become loyal, long-term clients, as well as being friends.
Mr. & Mrs. Hartes of Stuttgart have been coming to Du Lac for over twelve years. We catch up with them in their favourite little corner, a small lawn near the path that leads you from the huge Sequoia straight towards the lake. Katherine smiles: …We are particularly fond of this majestic tree, which we could see from our bedroom window during our first few stays. We like to think that when we come back to Du Lac, he remembers us and is pleased to see us again. My husband has painted it many times, and once, back at home, he even painted a watercolour of it that he gave to friends as a gift. I asked Georg what he enjoys most about his holidays here in our Resort: …We have always come to Riva del Garda in the middle of the Summer, when the roads, shops, bars and beaches are crowded, but here in “our” hotel, we never even notice: the park, the swimming pools, the tennis court, our bedroom – which has been our favourite for many years – and the attention of the hotel staff…. this is our holiday, and we have only ever skipped it a few times. Mr. & Mrs. Hartes exchange a glance and smile: …We like everything about it here, and above all, we like to think back to our very first stay at Du Lac, before we even got married... 106
Lolli and Ruggero Margiotta from Bergamo have been coming to Riva del Garda several times a year for sixteen years. The couple first discovered the Resort in the year 2000, thanks to the suggestion of some friends who had already stayed at the hotel. For us, this is our holiday home. We know everybody and we feel like part of the family. The first few years, we used to come regularly in August, then it gradually extended to a visit in June, July and again, at the end of the season, towards October. The hotel offers excellent value for money, but what we especially appreciate is the personal relationship with everyone. Over 16 years we have seen the staff grow up, and we have developed a lovely relationship with them. They greet us with hugs and kisses when we arrive and again when we leave. Mr. & Mrs. Margiotta enjoy the Resort from dawn to dusk. For Ruggero, the cycle path at the end of the park is what makes this place even more special, while for Lolli, her magical moment is an early morning walk with their dog, Pluto, and the first coffee of the morning offered by the reception staff. When I come downstairs with our dog before breakfast, as soon as the bar staff see me on the terrace, they immediately bring me a coffee. I then have a simple, regenerating walk around the fabulous park, where I usually stop and have a chat with Paolo, the head gardener, who takes such loving care of all the plants, and he enjoys giving botany lessons to my husband. The structural changes, both recent and future, don’t scare the Margiottas. We like the new entrance very much and it will be even more beautiful when then palms and climbing plants have grown: we were a little concerned about the works on the Murialdo, but it actually fits in very well with the rest; the park is always beautiful and marvellously well-tended and here the only changes are the plants that grow, just as we do. We are back for the third time this year and no doubt we’ll be back again in October. So, like every year, I’ll ask the Chef, Marco Brink, to prepare apple fritters for me along with hot chocolate and pastry cream and he’ll tell me how the season has been going, and we’ll chat about our children and all sorts of other things, before saying “arrivederci” until next year.
