Get ready for One Book Northland events throughout the month of April! This year’s selected title is Disability Visibility: First Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century, an anthology of first-person narratives on the subject of disabled life and culture in the United States. Copies available at participating libraries and booksellers.

Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 27! The Duluth Public Library will host a Disability Visibility Fair that day at the Main Library. The day’s highlights include over a dozen local organizations to share information on disability and accessibility, a community art project facilitated by CHOICE unlimited, a community book discussion, and a presentation and Q&A session by local musician and disability culture advocate, Gaelynn Lea! An ASL interpreter will be present at Gaelynn’s portion of the day’s events.

Family Story and Playtime • Birth to Kindergarten

Start the morning with a storytime geared for kids ages birth to Kindergarten in the Gold Room from 10:15-10:45. You and your children will have fun while building essential early literacy skills through stories, songs, rhymes, and movement. Afterwards, head to the Green Room for open play (until 11:30 am) that builds both large and fine motor skills and helps get those wiggles out.

Join us for a brief storytime, ideal for babies birth-24 months. Then stay for some early literacy playtime and socialization.

Come for a special storytime with Mayor Roger Reinert at 10:15 in the Gold Room and stay for open playtime from 10:45 to noon in the Green Room. There will be activities for ALL kinds of movement such as running, skipping, throwing, rolling, hopping, climbing, crawling, and dancing!

You’ve probably seen The LEGO™ Movie and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone but you haven’t seen them like this! Join us for two movies over spring break and become part of the movie with a bag of props and react out loud to iconic movie scenes. Yell, snack, and have fun as you watch and become involved with the movie. The Teen Advisory Board will be leading us in key interactive moments! Suitable for elementary age through teen. Kids age 8 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Beautiful Writing with Calligraphy • Tween to Adult Calligrapher Lynn Prouty will introduce attendees to the world of calligraphy. There will be an introductory talk and demonstration before we dive in to try writing with a dip pen and ink, a quill pen, and a glass pen. Geared for ages 12 and older.

Library Cake Wars • All Ages

Put your cake-baking and decorating skills to the test in the Library Cake Wars! The theme will be announced Monday, April 15 on library social media channels. Then, bakers will have until April 21 to submit a photo of their creation for voting. Please email photos of your cake entry to libraryevents@duluthmn.gov. Voting will be open from April 22-27 on the DPL’s Facebook page—the two cakes and their bakers with the most votes will each win a $30 gift card to the Duluth Kitchen Company!

The Marsh King’s Daughter: Film Screening with Lake Superior Writers and The Bookstore at Fitger’s

The Duluth Public Library is partnering with the Lake Superior Writers to present a screening of the film adaptation of Karen Dionne’s international best seller, The Marsh King’s Daughter. The Bookstore at Fitger’s will also be present at the event to sell copies of the book. Set in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the story follows a young woman who risks everything to hunt down the dangerous man who shaped her past and threatens her future–her father.

John Blatnik and Swante Norlund: Behind Enemy Lines in WWII

Learn about a local legend! John Blatnik was a congressman and has a bridge named after him. He was also in the OSS during WWII, working behind enemy lines and running rescue missions. We will learn about one such rescue, that of a B-24 gunner Swante Norlund. Presented by Briana Fiandt, Curator of Collections & Exhibits at the Richard I Bong Veterans Historical Center.
