In January, new housing approvals in Australia reached a decade-low, accompanied by a significant drop in loans for the construction of new homes, which hit their lowest point in 15 years.
However, despite 12 interest rate increases by the Reserve Bank of Australia, resulting in a 4 percent rise in official rates over the past year, property prices have not only stopped falling but have started to rise.
This resilience is being fueled by several factors including the federal government's forecast immigration settings and continued tightening of the rental market. Ongoing housing scarcity is increasingly outweighing the challenges posed by higher interest rates and reduced borrowing limits for some buyers, according to Domain.
These influences will likely have a positive medium-term impact on new housing sales, providing opportunities for developers, builders, and prospective homeowners. It now appears evident that residential construction in Australia may have reached the bottom and is moving into the next phase of the cycle.
With market conditions set to improve and confidence in the housing sector growing back to pre-pandemic levels, our industry can continue to do what it does best – meeting the demand of Australian families through the ongoing provision of quality homes.

Dulux Acratex offers performance solutions designed to keep masonry and render systems looking great for longer. Our systems work to maintain the look of the home for years to come.
Long term, Dulux Acratex systems provide your clients with a greater level of satisfaction that their home will keep looking as good as the day they moved in. Adding a protective barrier topcoat to the exterior facade will provide the home with optimal protection.
The importance of top coats
While strength and flexibility are built into the acrylic render coat, Acratex topcoats like AcraShield Advance provide a flexible protective finishing coat with maximum resistance to the elements which extend the system's life.
One coat of Acratex Acrashield Advance extends the life of the underlying render system, improves resistance to the elements and comes with a 10 year warranty.
Two coats of Acratex Acrashield Advance ensures maximum resistance to the elements and extends the coating life from 10 years to a 15 year warranty.
Acratex Acrashield Advance is available in the full range of Dulux colours.
Additional Benefits of a Top Coat:
Bridges cracks and reduces the appearance of cracks.
The top coat protective barrier prevents peeling and discolouration and is mould and dirt resistant.
Creates a thick, moisture proof barrier to stop surface contaminants causing stains. Maintains true colour for longer.
Easy maintenance and cleaning with a simple wash down. Touch up minor scuffs of affected area, rather than repairing the entire surface.

The annual Dulux Colour Forecast is one of the most highly anticipated events in the design calendar and this year is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
The Dulux Colour Forecast is a big responsibility, but one that Dulux takes very seriously as consumers and design practitioners alike look ahead to the colour trends set to inspire Australian interiors.
Having worked at DuluxGroup for over 25 years, Dulux Colour and Communications Manager Andrea Lucena-Orr has been part of the annual Dulux Colour Forecast since its inception in 1999. She has seen the amount of research and insights that shape the annual forecast evolve over time. Recalling those first few years, Andrea says that the Forecast announcement was based on supplier information from Europe and forecast reporting – with no social media and limited information available from websites. Today, we have never been more globally connected and interior trends are transitioning faster than ever before.
Colour and mood are inherently connected, which is why in unsettled or challenging times people are drawn to different hues to help them feel comforted and secure. During these times people tend to gravitate towards earth-based colours such as browns, soft greens and blues, hues that evoke a sense of strength and calm.
Over the last 25 years, Australians have faced significant moments that have influenced and inspired our interior colour trends. These include economic crises, natural disasters, political instability, climate change and war or terror-related disasters as well advances in globalisation and digital technologies like social media.
2010: coastal-inspired interiors
2011: hellow yellow
2017: greige reigns supreme
In 1999, the first year of the Dulux Colour Forecast, the new standard for open-plan interiors saw an increase in white to simplify larger spaces.
In 2005, the Dulux Colour Forecasters identified natural tones and textures being used to reflect a desire for sustainable living.
The 2010 Dulux Colour Forecast saw hues of cool, calming blues team with beige and whites to create a coastal aesthetic which is still one of Australia’s most loved interior styles.
The 2011 Dulux Colour Forecast saw yellow make a huge comeback after 20 years of being considered unfashionable. Following the global financial crisis (GFC) yellows, warm reds, oranges and pinks filled homes with positivity.
2014 was a particularly vibrant and joyful Colour Forecast with the colour rule book thrown out the window. Metallic shades of gold and brass combined with bold and bright colours.
2015 saw green shades used as a response to the world feeling constantly ‘plugged in’ and a desire to feel closer to nature. Colours reflected untamed, natural landscapes with ashy blues, clean white and dark greys.
In 2017 cooler, tonal palettes of blue and greige (grey and beige) offered an antidote to the challenges of the digital age. Connection, tactility and balance prevailed.
2019 saw surprising and unexpected colour combinations team with repurposed vintage pieces and organic shapes and frayed edges in decor.
2019: unexpected colour combinations
The 2024 Dulux Colour Forecast will be announced on 31 August 2023
