Spray Pave Melbourne

What is your business name?

We are called Spray Pave Melbourne. Specialising in Decorative Concrete Resurfacing, we’re Melbourne based, bringing surfaces back to life with advanced products and finishes.

We have been working for over 10 years in this field.

What is one project you are really proud of?

The one project I am really proud of is the Coles Project. This project was quite complicated and challenging since we were resurfacing the concrete entrance area for Coles, which needed to stay open for 24 hours.

We had to divide the work into two parts to allow shoppers to continue accessing the store, often working while shoppers were passing by. The weather didn’t help either, as it was very windy, but we managed to get through it.

What product did you use?

We used the Dulux Avista 20Kg Resurfacing Compound base mixed with the Dulux Avista Colour Oxides.

What colours did you use?

We used a cream base with lite mocha and white flecks.

How many m2 did you cover?

The project covered around 250 sqm.

How many hours/days did it take you to complete the job?

The project was over two parts, with each part being about 2.5 days.

Was there a special technique/tips you used to help you?

Our experience made the process easier. By having a wellcoordinated plan and dividing the work into manageable sections, we were able to ensure a smooth workflow.

Additionally, using high-quality materials and maintaining clear communication with the Coles team helped us adapt to the challenges, such as the weather and continuous shopper access.

How long have you been an a Dulux Avista Accredited applicator? 6 years.

What is your advice to anyone who wishes to become an applicator?

My advice to anyone who wishes to become an applicator is to gain as much hands-on experience as possible. Start by learning from experienced professionals and practicing on smaller projects before taking on larger ones.

Always stay updated with the latest techniques and products in the industry, and don’t hesitate to ask for help or advice when needed. Patience and attention to detail are crucial in this field, as is maintaining a high standard of quality in your work. Lastly, build good relationships with your clients and always strive to exceed their expectations.

New Bare Concrete Primer can be used under Epoxy

New Bare Concrete Primer can be used under Epoxy

The new Dulux Avista Waterbased Bare Concrete Primer has the following features:

• It primes bare concrete surfaces

• It penetrates, strengthens and stabilises the concrete surface

• It is fast drying, very low VOC - 4g/L and low odour

• Can be used on bare concrete surfaces including concrete pavers, and Hardie™ Deck

One of the additional benefits of the new bare concrete primer is that it can be used on bare concrete under the Dulux Avista Waterbased Epoxy

Apply two coats of bare concrete primer on bare concrete in good condition. Once dry, Dulux Avista Waterbased Epoxy can be applied to provide following benefits :

 It increases the spread rate of the epoxy, as the bare concrete primer soaks into the concrete substrate.

 As a result, it is more effective in achieving a consistent finish than adding on additional coats of epoxy

 The epoxy sits prouder on the surface

Best application method for Dulux Avista Polyaspartic

Dulux Avista Polyaspartic is a two component, high performance, solvent-free 100% Polyaspartic with a high gloss clear finish that has fantastic benefits as a top coat.

However, because it is so fast curing, it can create a challenge for applicators to achieve an even consistent finish during application.

Applying the Polyaspartic by roller makes the surface shiny in spots where the roller first makes contact with the surface as it is difficult to spread and the extra product cannot be distributed properly by the roller and gets accumulated.

The best way to achieve an even and consistent finish on the surface is to apply the Polyaspartic using a squeegee, followed by back rolling it using the following steps:

1. Pour the Dulux Avista Polyaspartic out in ribbons across the surface and move the product around to desired thickness using the squeegee.

The squeegee will move excess product away from areas with excess build up quickly, providing a more consistent film thickness.

2. However, using a squeegee will leave some ridges on the surface that need to be evened out. This is why finishing off the surface using a roller is important.Note: 6-8mm nap roller is recommended for application as a top coat on coloured Epoxy. 12mm nap roller is recommended for application over vinyl flakes.

Using a roller, backroll to get a smooth uniform finish. Note that the roller needs to be replaced every 10mins. This is because the Polyaspartic sets quickly, the roller can become tacky very quickly during the application process, which makes the Polyaspartic stick to the roller and prevents an even finish.

Solvent wash for Reseals

Do you know you should be doing a solvent wash* when you do a reseal on acyrlic resins . If the existing sealer on the surface is more than 2 years old, then apply the Dulux Avista Solvent before resealing. This reactivates the previously applied sealer and allows for better adhesion of the new sealer with the new coating.

In order to do a solvent wash, ensure concrete is clean and free of grease, oil and paint. Pressure clean surface at a minimum 2000psi to ensure no residues are left on the surface. Ensure surface is dry using a moisture meter. Then apply Dulux Avista Solvent using a solvent resistant broom or roller, work in to surface until existing coating becomes tacky.

Once dry enough to walk on, the resealing process can begin. It can also be used to dilute solvent based Dulux Avista sealers (see relevant sealer TDS for details on www.duluxavista.com.au.

*Note: Solvent wash can be used only when clear sealer was previously used.

Exposed Aggregate Sealer, Surface Retarder & Hydrochloric Acid

Dulux Avista Exposed Aggregate Concrete Sealer is a protective clear coating specifically designed for use on exposed aggregate concrete surfaces. It can be used on freshly poured or existing exposed aggregate concrete.

Dulux Avista Surface Retarder is used to reveal aggregate in freshly placed horizontal concrete by delaying the surface set so that the mortar paste may be washed from between the aggregate particles, after the mass of the concrete has set. This produces an attractive exposed aggregate finish, or a key for subsequent pours or renders e.g. floors, driveways and paving.

Dulux Avista Hydrochloric Acid is used for acid etching of concrete surfaces prior to the application of Dulux Avista decorative coatings and repair mortars. The hydrochloric acid must be diluted with water. The ratio will vary depending on the surface texture and condition. However, the general ratio is 1 part acid to 20 parts water.

Spray-down toppings are usually applied by a hopper gun under pressure.

The Spear & Jackson SJ-HG401 - Hopper is an air operated Textured Hopper Gun that has following features:
