“I love how colour and colour combinations are constantly evolving to reflect what’s happening in the world around us” Davina

Left Escapade, page 58

For over 18 years the colour team at Dulux has been exploring colour trends. This year’s theme of Balance is one that most of us can relate to as we try to find balance in our increasingly busy lives. This year I made my second journey to the Salone del Mobile in Milan and was lucky enough to take part in the international Color Marketing Group’s colour forecasting workshop. The trip reinforced to me how much colour and colour combinations are constantly evolving and just how closely influenced they are by social and economic events happening around the world. As someone who loves to travel, my favourite theme this year is Escapade. How can you not be inspired by the unexpected and playful colour combinations which take their cues from tropical climates like Miami, Brazil and Palm Springs? We hope you enjoy the Home edition of the 2018 Dulux Colour Trends and come away with plenty of new interior and colour inspiration, as well as practical tips, to help you bring some of these colours into your home.

Andrea Lucena-Orr, researches colour trends, presenting her findings to trade and retail markets, and media. Travelling to Milan Design Week, Andrea with Davina and Bree solidified their concepts and insights for the Dulux Colour Trends. “I adore working with colour and experimenting with unusual colour combinations and textures,” Andrea says, highlighting Reflect as her top trend. “Colour has an amazing power to transform spaces and I love the emotional connections you can create through personalising of colour schemes,” she says.

Lisa Cohen is an Australian-based photographer specialising in interiors, food, lifestyle and still life. Growing up in a family containing three generations of architects, it was only natural that Lisa developed a love for interiors and design. This led her to London, where she worked as a concept stylist on interiors magazines, before moving into photography. Since then Lisa has been shooting interiors, food and lifestyle images for large national brands, small independent clients and magazines worldwide.

Interior stylist and writer Michelle Halford, founded her blog, The Design Chaser, in 2012. With a focus on Scandinavian interiors, she reports on current trends, shares inspiring projects and collaborates with local and international brands. Her global following has seen her social accounts become among the most popular in the design world. She was named “pinner to follow” by the Huffington Post. For this year’s colour trends we asked Michelle to re-create the Kinship look for an everyday living space.

As Dulux’s New Zealand Colour & Design Specialist, Davina is fascinated by the constant evolution of colour and colour combinations in response to shifting social influences. In collaboration with Andrea and Bree, Davina applies her interior and colour design expertise to help shape the Dulux Colour Trends 2018, infusing them with vital New Zealand influence. She is passionate about New Zealand design and excited to see local designers represented in this year’s colour trends. “My favourite trend this year has to be has to be Escapade because of the playful colour combinations” she says. Her top colour choices: Dulux Motueka and Glinks Gully.

Interiors Stylist & Writer

From a young age, Bruce Summers loved all things design, furniture and homewares. With 10+ years in the industry, he decided to apply his experience to his passion for industrial product design. As Design Manager for Country Road Home, he covers everything from setting initial design directions to identifying new products and category opportunities. He oversees product design processes, visual merchandising, styling and marketing. For this year’s colour trends, Bruce gets creative with the Essential trend.

For Pip, selling beautiful things is in her blood. From a young age, she filled her weekends with selling picked flowers, pastel drawings, pikelets and cordial to passer-buyers. While she studied fashion and textile design in Sydney, the pull back to Orange, NSW, proved too strong. At age 22 Pip opened Iglou store, later followed by Jumbled. Jumbled sells an eclectic mix of homewares. “It is pretty much everything I love and want for myself, all located under the one roof,” she says. For this year’s colour trends, Pip re-imagines the Escapade trend.

Heather Nette King's love of colour has had a strong influence on her work as an interiors stylist and writer. She works with bold, unique colour combinations and loves inspiring others to do the same. Heather’s work is seen in leading interior titles and newspapers and she creates visual imagery for many of Australia’s most popular interiors brands. Her work has also been published internationally, and her own home has been featured in international style bible, Elle Decoration UK. For this year’s colour trends, Heather shows us how she would create the Reflect look in her home.

Bree is passionate about interpreting interior trends into beautifully styled spaces that are both appealing in aesthetic and rich in narrative. Her unique talent for styling inspires others to create new styles and looks for their own home spaces. “My colour trend highlights for 2018 are Dulux Waimakariri River and Marine Parade,” she says. Between the ‘fake news’ and ‘click-bate’ headlines, it can be hard to sort the truth from the alternative facts! It’s time to switch off the noise and drown out the negative vibes. To create space for compassion and kindness, and truth and transparency. In doing so we find new joy in reviving long-held traditions. CREATING THE LOOK MICHELLE HALFORD CREATES A WARM, COSY SPACE WITH THE KINSHIP TREND

17

“I was immediately drawn to Kinship’s palette of deep red, brown and caramel tones. Together with cosy, neutral shades they create a warm, cocoon-like atmosphere perfect for a living room. For the walls I used Dulux Tikitiki alongside Hildegard. My hero pieces, a Fritz Hansen Lune Sofa, pendant light, layered rugs and wall art, are inspired by Dulux Very Terracotta, Raccoon Tail and Fortrose. I chose Dulux Glinks Gully as a neutral accent to carry through to other furniture selections. Embracing expressive folkloric elements I have chosen beautiful wood, woven and ceramic pieces to add texture and interest to the room.”

For furniture and soft furnishings, choose tactile finishes like velvet and wool. — Offset rich colours with a complimentary neutral to create warmth and cosiness. — Bring a fun, folkloric style to your space with patterns, embroidery, fringing and tassels.

t’s the simple pleasures that remind us that life need not be so complicated. The familiar comfort of a cup of tea, the warm kiss of the sun on your face. Beauty can exist in the most humble and quietest of moments. Showy status symbols begin to lose their shine, replaced by the Nordic tradition of Hygge (HOO-ga). Time is no longer an elusive and fleeting luxury, rather a series of moments to be savoured and shared.

Our search for a more authentic existence inspires a new-found appreciation for natural and recycled materials. As we embrace the old as new, we repair our rifts with nature and move towards a more genuine and conscious way of living. CREATING THE LOOK 4

BRUCE SUMMERS GETS INSPIRED WITH THE ESSENTIAL TREND

“For my Essential space, I’ve focused on natural materials, finishes and textures that carry a modern, understated and casual sophistication. I have focused on soft green tones and warm neutrals that create a statement without being loud ideal for creating a sense of calm. The colour palette works perfectly with raw timber, leather and brass allowing the materiality to be the hero. I have balanced clean lines with the exaggerated and simple woven textiles including a rug and upholstery fabric. Incorporating elements of nature can really finish a space. I selected a juvenile Eucalyptus tree which works against Dulux Flooded Gum or Spanish Olive.”

BRUCE’S TIPS

— Link your interior spaces with the outdoors by choosing soft green tones and warm neutrals inspired by nature. — Add accents of charcoal or black to your calm colour palette to create moments of visual interest and help anchor the look. — Create a sense of intrigue with artisanal accents like hand-glazed ceramics, beautiful hand loom cushions or folded leather baskets.

14 PIP BRETT OF JUMBLED GETS CREATIVE WITH THE ESCAPADE LOOK. 12

“Colour really makes my heart sing! For this fresh, fun space, I’ve used brave, bold block colours to create my dream room. I love an element of surprise, so I’ve clashed patterns and geometric shapes, and played with scale to create a playful, exciting look and feel. Inspired by holidays in Palm Springs and Miami - I’ve brought the outdoors in with indoor plants, used colourful artwork and a green feature wall to channel that vibrant, happy feel.”

PIP’S TIPS

— Yellow is like magic! Use it as an accent colour to make your other colours pop. — Looking for inspiration for a new colour scheme? Start by pulling key colours from your favourite artwork to build a colour palette for your room. — Use directional lines to take your eye on a journey through the room. Try fine-lined furniture or fittings in black, or experiment by painting a linear pattern on the wall.

HEATHER USES THE REFLECT TREND TO CREATE A STRONG, FEMININE SITTING ROOM. 6

“This is my dream ‘room of one’s own’ a modern take on an elegant space for reading magazines, entertaining girlfriends and catching up on correspondence. The slate floor suggests it’s in the formal part of the home, and the strong walls and ceiling colours provide an intimacy good for encouraging the sharing of secrets! The bronze feature wall ups the glam factor, and the mix of furniture and accessories from the 50s to now keeps the feeling fresh and contemporary. Lighting would be hung low, and kept dim at all times."

4

3

heathernetteking.com.au

HEATHER’S TIPS

— Create a sense of intimacy with low hung lighting and deep, moody colours.

2

1

— Be bold with your colour scheme by adding a dark ceiling colour to complete the look. — Add a touch of glam using a precious metallic paint, like Dulux Gold Effect, on your feature wall. Up the opulence with glints of metallic throughout your space. — For a fresh look, combine classic furniture styles with contemporary additions.
