WE LCO ME

Welcome to the 2018 late summer edition of Waterside West. It seems such a short time ago that we were discussing what to do and where to go in early summer. This summer has been eventful both weather wise and the events held within our area. The summer of 2018 will be remembered for the heatwave and then followed suddenly by the changeable weather we are used to. Once again, however, the summer seems to have flown by with lots to do and good weather to support outdoor activities, with the festivals having again proven to be a great success. The festivals and activities have welcomed many artists and visitors to the cities of Southampton, Portsmouth, Winchester, Chichester and surrounding areas of western Hampshire, thus helping to ensure the continuing popularity of the area that we live in. As autumn now approaches and the summer festivities have come to an end culminating in the Victorious Festival in Portsmouth and Cowes week on the Isle of Wight, we start to look forward to the autumn season. Entertainment does not end with the beginning of the autumn season, and indeed the area continues to offer many varied attractions. Waterside has included just some of the ideas and attractions that are available within our area. The long summer evenings are also now starting to become shorter and the barbecues become less it is perhaps time to turn our thoughts into preparing the garden for autumn and winter. We hope that you continue to enjoy the remainder of the summer and look forward to early autumn with the wonderful changing colours the season offers. We at Waterside West wish you all health and happiness and we hope you truly enjoy the magazine, the features and all else it has to offer. Best Wishes from us all.

Ocean Village’s fi

welcomes the w

Waterside access into Southampton recently became even more stunning with the completion of MDL Marinas’ Ocean Village comprehensive redesign. Notable innovations include new pontoons linked to a £50m luxury spa hotel complex, and a floating dock office to welcome guests from around the world.

MDL Marinas is well known for the high level of customer service provided 24/7, and Ocean Village Marina is no exception. The marina recently took delivery of a state-of-the-art floating dock office, which is offering a full concierge service. As well as being welcoming and professional, the office’s facilities will make it very straightforward – especially for those arriving at night – to find their berth via navigational guidance through a large, illuminated screen. 32

“Ocean Village Marina is one of a kind on the south coast,” says Adrien Burnand, MDL’s head of marketing. “Visitors are immediately encased in a world of luxury, whether they’re accessing the five-star facilities at Harbour Hotel straight from the pontoon, one of the many wonderful restaurants nestled alongside, or checking out new and classic releases at the on-site cinema.” YOUR LIFEST YLE MAGAZINE

At the edge of Southampton Water, with easy access to the Solent, Ocean Village’s basin was previously used by commercial ships and means that it is the only marina able to accommodate superyachts. “We’re delighted with the transformation of Ocean Village Marina,” Adrien continues. “We’ve been working on the project for quite a while, and it’s wonderful to see all of the hard work pay off. Lest We Forget…

On August 5 1914 the first shot at sea of the First World War was fired and exactly 104 years later a Lamplight of Peace commemorating the work of the Great War tunnellers and the millions of soldiers, sailors and merchant seamen that lost their lives embarked on its own 100-day journey, ending on Remembrance Sunday, on 11 November. Its first call was at The National Museum of the Royal Navy, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The specially-commissioned Lamplight of Peace is an original Bonnetted Clanny (Meusler) lamp that would have been used by miners in British coalfields and subsequently in the tunnels. The event is part of Battle’s Over – A Nation’s Tribute being organised by international Pageantmaster Bruno Peek LVO OBE OPR to mark the centenary of the end of the Great War. Battle’s Over – A Nation’s Tribute organiser Bruno Peek said, “The tunnellers are some of the great unsung heroes of the Great War. They fought their war underground, constantly surrounded by darkness and danger as they dug explosive-packed tunnels beneath enemy lines. Their extraordinary bravery has largely been forgotten but I hope that this event will serve to shed some light in the work they undertook in unimaginable conditions”. Professor Dominic Tweddle, Director General of The National Museum of the Royal Navy said, “We were honoured to be the first call for the Lamplight of Peace. As a museum we have worked incredibly hard to mark the centenary of the Great War.”

After Portsmouth won the Cup in 1939, it moved from Fratton Park and was brought to the village for safekeeping - away from the city’s wartime bombing. The trophy is said to have spent its days on the pub bar and its nights stashed for safety under the landlord’s bed. 70 odd years on and Lovedean is still a lovely, peaceful village, set on the very edge of the South Downs National Park and Linden Homes has chosen this sought after location for its new collection of beautiful new apartments and houses. Catherington Park consists of a mix of 1 and 2 bedroom apartments and 2, 3 and 4 bedroom houses, so there is something for everyone. The village of Lovedean has a selection of great local shops (including a Tesco YOUR LIFEST YLE MAGAZINE

Waterlooville is just five minutes away: It offers an even wider selection of shops and services and boasts ten further primary schools, five secondary schools and two colleges. The village of Lovedean is perfectly placed for commuters: Portsmouth (and the Fratton Park football ground) is around 15 minutes’ drive away (via the A3) while Southampton and the south coast are within easy reach and travelling to London by road or rail is very straightforward: Rowlands Castle train station, less than four miles away, offers direct links to London Waterloo. Pots and Plant Big, bold and beautiful. Modern garden designers tend to lean towards this vision when asked to use pots and planters to create architectural interest in clients’ gardens. Historically, ornate traditional planters made in the beautiful materials of marble, cast iron and lead have long been used in gardens. Although in their heyday, these types of planters sat proud and majestically on the gates of country houses or adorned large sweeping terraces. Beauty of the material More often than not these planters remained empty, with their owners seemingly happy to allow the beauty of the material speak for itself. There is a lesson here somewhere. Pots and planters look great overflowing with the bright colours of seasonal flowers, or helping to show off a specimen shrub. However, the effect of a beautifully made pot in the less expensive material of clay, can often make a bigger impact.

The humble flowerpot The Egyptians were the first to make use of clay producing the humble flowerpot to move their plants about. Of course, in our more recent centuries, it is the

42

Greeks who are more famous for their beautiful terracotta pots. Also, the Cretans have long used their local clay to make big pots to store grain, olives and olive oil.

Earthy tones Authentic Cretan pots are fired up to 1150c, which means they can withstand the most brutal of our winter frosts. So in recent decades these very same pots, in all shapes and sizes have been finding their way to our shores. With their earthy tones of rust and tan, they have become increasingly popular as features in both the traditional and modern garden.

nters

Modern Lines For the more adventurous the huge range of frost resistant fibreglass pots is increasingly popular with people wanting something a little different. Not only can you have any shape or size to suit your garden, you can choose any colour under the rainbow and they come in a variety of finishes. Fibreglass pots are strong, lightweight and durable and planted with a colourful display of plants add a touch of class to your contemporary or courtyard garden. Because they are so light, these fibreglass planters are easy to move, which allows for more experimental positioning. These planters are particularly useful in the northern areas of the garden where you can use them to help to brighten

a dark or shady spot. Finally, they are relatively inexpensive.

Finishing touches No matter what material or style suits your tastes and garden, pots and planters help to add the personal finishing touches to your outdoor space. Frame the borders of patios, terraces and balconies or use planted with small trees or specimen plants to add height to small courtyards or gardens. You can plant with evergreens, colourful seasonal plants, trees and bulbs. The choice is yours. Contact: Hambrooks of Titchfield www.hambrooks.co.uk 01489 572285

Hobbies for life‌

Ten years ago, I decided to learn to play golf. It took me out of my comfort zone to become a learner again and even though I find the sport frustrating it is rewarding. It is a sport I can do with my husband which gives us as “empty nesters an interest that we can do together. I am often asked in my capacity as a head teacher my opinion as to whether children should abandon hobbies so that they may concentrate on their academic studies. At an early age many children develop interests from learning a skill such as playing sport or taking grades on a musical instrument. These activities are refined as the child progresses and whilst when quite young they could spend much of their spare time occupied by interests they then tend to hone to just one or two once they become teenagers. School work does take up time out of the school day and depending on age children need time to be able do homework and study independently. However, they also need to keep up their interests. 44

Pursuing hobbies is what helps make us rounded adults. It gives us activity that is not job related and through which we make friends and socialise outside of the working environment. It may also help keep our bodies fit as well as our minds healthy. This applies as much to children as it does to adults. Children benefit from meeting others outside of school. If children are not given the opportunity to try sports or other interests, then it is much harder to develop these life skills once they are older. I played hockey in my younger days and I found this useful in learning to hit the ball in golf in my latter years. Hobbies evolve over time. I felt I needed to be fitter and taking up spinning recently has improved my core strength as well as enabling me to meet new people. Activities are one way of relieving stress helping individuals feel better about themselves. This has been recognised as important in creating a sense of perspective on life. Children may not YOUR LIFEST YLE MAGAZINE

E DUCATI O N be naturally studious and finding an interest that develops their talents in other ways is important. This raises their self-esteem whilst also relieving tedium and boredom. Not all interests need to be competitive and there is a benefit in learning, for example, a musical instrument and not sitting grades. Moreover, helping out in a charitable way brings enormous rewards. Hobbies also make people more engaging and it enables them to develop their conversation. Depending on the activity it may encourage patience and certainly commitment and dedication. To answer the question as to whether children should continue with hobbies then the general answer is a resounding yes. However, the child should enjoy the activity taking into account that sometimes they need to be encouraged to really give it time to see if they like it. Development of grit and resilience is another benefit.

Bike it. You will like it. Cycling has become highly popular in Britain and shows continuing capacity for growth. Fifteen years ago about two million bicycles were sold in Britain each year and now it is more than three million. Indeed, in 2015 three and a half million Britons bought a new bike. The advantages of a bike; getting from A to B cheaply, an increase in general fitness and a healthy glow are evident. Not so evident is the sense of relaxation you get and the go-as-you-please freedom you discover along the way. Small towns and big cities are all changing to accommodate more cycling, and to separate bicycles from cars, buses and lorries. These changes take time and lots of money, but it is clear that there is a quiet revolution taking place. If you don’t already have one, think about buying a bike and get going this autumn, so that you can master it and feel ready for next spring. Talk to the experienced staff at a dedicated bike shop, set a budget and see what suits. The lighter the better. YOUR LIFEST YLE MAGAZINE

Also, bear in mind that a great many big employers have joined the Government-backed Cycle to Work buy a bike schemes, which give you a tax free £1,000 to spend on the bike and equipment, with the cost is deducted monthly over 12 months. This can allow you to splash out a bit more. Look out for good second hand offers too where previous owners are trading up. If doing this, have it looked over by an experienced friend or, again, your local bike shop who do repairs. And it is not just the bicycles, but there is the kit too. Firstly, a good U-shaped lock plus proper lights in the winter are essential and should not be skimped on. Additionally, you need to be seen even if you are not heard. This means wearing something white or bright, but you don’t have to go day-glow. You can still be fashionable if you think about it. Just make sure you can be seen. There are some cities where cyclists jump traffic lights, have no lights, and invariably dress in street cred black. A&E have their share of them but you, if you ride thoughtfully, have no need to join them. Instead you can pick and choose where you want to go, what you want to see and the best quiet route to get there. 49

Vélo South Excitement is mounting within West Sussex ahead of the firstever Vélo South – a major new closed-road cycling event that will see 15,000 riders of all abilities explore the region on two wheels. The 100-mile sportive, which starts and finishes at Goodwood Motor Circuit on Sunday 23rd September, will take cyclists on an unforgettable journey on closed roads through the spectacular countryside of West Sussex.

Community events have been organised to celebrate the event. The Queens Head Pub in Barns Green will be a ‘cheer point’ for cyclists riding in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society and villagers are also getting in on the fundraising act. The Lintot Pub in Southwater is staging a family BBQ, featuring a live local band, balloon artist and face painting, while the East Ashling Association is throwing a Vélo South-themed lunch party on the village green. In Lavant, the Parish Council is organising a ‘Cycling Sunday’ event for all age groups. Vélo South is set to provide a significant boost to West Sussex tourism and the local economy, with 15,000 entrants and their friends and families travelling to West Sussex for the event. They will be treated to such highlights as Ducton Hill, with its views across the Sussex Weald, and picturesque villages like Ashington, Wiston and Partridge Green.

With thousands of cyclists riding for charity, Vélo South is expected to raise a substantial amount for both local and national charities. 50

Wey & Arun Canal, considered ‘London’s lost route to the sea’, will also be a key feature, along with the panoramic hill-top views of Harting Down and the feeling of cycling through Provence as participants pass the spectacular Lordington Lavender. YOUR LIFEST YLE MAGAZINE

Several famous faces will be saddling up to enjoy the spectacular views including England’s Rugby World Cup-winning skipper Martin Johnson CBE and two Olympic gold-medallists – local girl Sally Gunnell OBE, riding for Age UK West Sussex, and rower Mark Hunter MBE, who triumphed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The 15,000-strong field will also be filled with inspirational entrants, including Emsworth-based Dave Acres, riding in memory of son Will who died earlier this year from Pulmonary Hypertension (PH), a rare condition affecting the heart and lungs. Retired pilot Graham Watson is aiming to celebrate his 70th birthday by completing his first-ever 100-mile cycle challenge at Vélo South. The Aldingbourne resident is also raising money for the British Heart Foundation, which has played a pivotal role in keeping him healthy after being diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat in 2013. Rookie cyclist Alan Barrett, from Littlehampton, is taking on Vélo South to raise funds for family devastated by lifechanging injuries 3,300 miles away. Alan’s brother-in-law Brian Campbell, who moved from West Sussex to Canada last year, has been left paralysed from the YOUR LIFEST YLE MAGAZINE

waist down after falling from the roof of his Toronto home. Selsey blood cancer survivor Steve Mitchell is cycling Vélo South to show he is no longer the frail patient laid low by the harrowing conditioning treatment he underwent a decade ago. Steve, aged 52, owns the E-bike Centre in Birdham, Chichester. Jon Ridgeon, Executive Chairman of organisers CSM Active, said:

Anticipation for the inaugural Vélo South began to grow way back in March when all 15,000 general entry places sold out in a matter of days, and the excitement is tangible...

DISNEY’S THE NUTCRACKER

All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key—which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden FoworaKnight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world. Starring Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Disney’s new holiday feature film “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, and inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale.

I had dreams, yes, of course I did. And I always wanted to be in the movies. In fact, I was what you might call something of a daydreamer at school. Couldn’t concentrate, a shy kid, bit of a loner. And I was lousy in school. I was antisocial and didn’t bother with the other kids… A real screw-up, a moron. I didn’t know what I was doing there. That’s why I became an actor. My father, a hard worker, a local baker, and my greatest hero today, as a matter of fact, worried about me a lot, thought I might be backward. He told me I needed to get out there, mix with other the other kids and make friends. But I was this shy kid who always wanted a brother. I loved the movies and the escapism of the cinema. Acting and Hollywood were a world away from Port Talbot. But in the back of my mind, I thought maybe, just maybe… How influential was Richard Burton in your rise to fame? Burton was, and still is, hugely regarded in Wales . One of the greats. Truly one of the greats. He and Elizabeth ( Taylor ) were in Port Talbot at one time during the height of their fame. He was visiting his sister, I think, and I was about 15 when I met him… Very impressed, just by example, very encouraging. Just before they left, I saw them together getting into a large car. Elizabeth looked back and smiled at me, caught my eye. I watched them drive off and thought, he’s done it, by God, he’s made it and if he can do it then there’s hope for me… I thought I’d follow my nose, follow my luck. And I think I’ve been very lucky. What were the most important lessons you learnt as Oliver’s understudy and protégé? Confidence. He was very gifted. Very generous with what he said. He once YOUR LIFEST YLE MAGAZINE

wrote “A new young actor in the company of exceptional promise named Anthony Hopkins was understudying me and walked away with the part of Edgar like a cat with a mouse between its teeth.” He taught me to believe in myself. Who were your main heroes and influences? My father. As mentioned Burton and Olivier are both up there too. Oh yes, and Tommy Cooper - “Just Like That”, a comedy genius. Still makes me laugh, just thinking about Tommy. How did you get into the film world? I didn’t want to end up ponsing around the West End and I wanted to be in the movies. I wanted to to prove I could do it, get to the top of my game. Live the dream. In 1968, I got my big break in ‘The Lion in Winter’ playing Richard I along with Peter O’Toole and Katie Hepburn. It was a godsend. I took all the offers that came along. I like work, the money. If they ask me and I like the script, the people, good directors. I have worked with some difficult directors - no names, no back talk... and I avoid them. But if it all feels right, a challenge, I do it.

Growing up in Port Talbot , did you ever dream of becoming a world-famous actor?

You’re involved in a number of philanthropic endeavours. Why is it important to you to give something back to society? ‘A’ helps ‘B’ and ‘A’ benefits. It’s the best deal in town. I am a patron of the RAPt charity and a few other things. *RAPt is pioneer in offering addiction rehabilitation to prisoners. An agenda that is now in the news. I’ve been lucky, it’s been an amazing journey, so far, and it doesn’t hurt to give a bit back. (More info - *www.RAPt.org.uk )
