WELCOME
Welcome to Waterside, your local lifestyle magazine. Welcome to the 2018 winter edition of Waterside West. Christmas may seem a while away yet, but it won’t be long before we’re opening the doors on those advent calendars, rushing out to do last minute Christmas shopping and wondering just how to fit work in between all the parties! There are all kinds of festive events leading up to Christmas and entertainment venues are plentiful from the ice rink in West Quay Southampton to the Festival of Christmas in Portsmouth Dockyard. There are many different types of entertainment that reflects the diversity within the area, including the many Christmas festivities in many different venues, churches and cathedrals. Pantomime Season is also a wonderful time not just for the children but also for the rest of us and our inner child. Take a look at the “What’s On” guide for some of the highlights. As we head into the depths of winter and the dark nights and mornings it is sometimes hard to see the beauty of winter. The crispness of a frosty morning (but not, however, when we are scraping the windscreen prior to setting off on our daily routines) and the joy of the changing colours from Summer to Autumn and then even into Winter. Fashions change and as we look to how to keep warm we also look to how we can look and feel good. Although clothes do not a person make, we will feel good if we know we are looking our best. Skin care and beauty tips are always welcome and support our feelings of well-being. With this in mind I hope you will review the tips given within the magazine. We at Waterside West hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a warm and healthy winter. Merry Christmas, and a happy New Year, and we wish you all the best for 2019. Wrap up warm, keep well and carry on reading.

CHILD CATCHER’S CARRIAGE Joins Beaulieu’s Chitty exhibition
The original Child Catcher carriage from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will be on display for the first time in the UK at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu to celebrate the golden anniversary of the film. The Chitty Chitty Bang Bang 50 years exhibition opens on October 20th.

Only two of the four carriages built for filming have survived and this ‘hero’ carriage, on loan from the Medieval Crime and Justice Museum in Germany, was used for all of the key scenes. Standing alongside will be the Child Catcher’s costume, as seen in the film. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang 50 years will tell the story of Chitty and feature an original screen Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the Humber 8hp driven by Truly Scrumptious. Coggins’ Garage will be recreated in the museum to house the film’s inventive machines created by Rowland Emett, including the Humbug Major Sweet Machine, Clockwork Lullabye, Little Dragon Carpet Sweeper and Hot Air Rocking Chair. A full-size replica of Grandpa Potts’ hut has been built using the 50-year-old technical drawings from the archive of EON Productions. The actual Spy Phone prop used in the film will also be on show, together with Sally Anne Howes’ lifesize music box doll dress. A timeline wall will chart the Chitty story from its beginnings – as James Bond creator Ian Fleming’s inspirational book about the magical flying car – to Cubby Broccoli’s unique interpretation on film. Fleming was inspired by the real-life exploits of racing driver Count Louis Zborowski who designed and built four aero-engined racing cars that were named Chitty Bang Bang because of the sound they made while standing idle. The exhaust and leather bonnet strap from the Count’s original Mercedes Chitty will be on display as part of his legacy.

The cloud-shaped wall will also feature first edition copies of Fleming’s book which he wrote for his son Caspar and was published posthumously in 1964, alongside producer Cubby Broccoli’s programme from the Royal World Premiere of the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang film in 1968. Weird and wonderful Chitty memorabilia includes signatures of the star-studded cast, pedal and Corgi cars, comics, computer games, pop-up books and even lunch boxes made to celebrate the children’s favourite film. Never exhibited before original film concept art by Sir Ken Adam, storyboard watercolour artwork by Robert Laing and technical drawings by Peter Lamont will be on display, along with the solid silver Chitty model bought for producer Cubby Broccoli by his wife Dana.

Our BEST ever Chef Mince Pie Recipe Preparation time: 20 - 30 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes For the mince mixture, add all the ingredients into a medium pot and bring to the boil and leave to cool at room temperature. Heat the oven to 180oC. To make the pastry, cream the butter and sugar with the paddle attachment, on high speed. With the motor running, add the egg yolk and mix until incorporated. Lower the speed to 1 and add the flour. Mix until dough just starts to clump, but don’t over work it. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured board, and gently work to form a ball. Roll the dough out to 5mm thick, and cut into circles 8.5cm in diameter. Line a muffin tray with the pastry discs and fill with mince mixture. Use a 5cm diameter star cutter to cut out stars of the remaining pastry and place on the mince pies. Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly golden around the edges. Leave to cool completely and dust with icing sugar to finish.

ROGER VIVIER SPRING/SUMMER 2019 COLLECTION Hotel Vivier A cinematic Homage to Parisian Distinction Hotel Vivier is an ode to women, in all their diversity and beauty, that started with a journey of exploration into the archives of the Maison, to inspire a new creative vocabulary for the Vivier woman. That very imagination and rich variety of women are at the heart of a living and breathing world for the presentation of the collection. Stepping through the doors of the ‘Hotel Vivier’ is like walking into a sequence of scenes from a film. At the intersection of fiction and reality, the experience feels both familiar and unexpected. It is a fascinating place where visitors are invited to discover the world of Roger Vivier. Six women and five rooms. Five artistic professions that reflect his work and life. Liberated, contemporary, and eclectic characters; framed with cinematographic quality in their intimate setting, a represent-ion, yet a false reality. Before meeting any of them, the mistress of the house welcomes her guests into this captivating establishment and ushers them through the story. The Sculptor, the Photographer, the Dancer, the Lyrical Singer, and the Actress. Everyone plays a role in this unlikely movie. Every room has its own movie camera filming scenes in real-time and projecting them on screens at the entrance of the hotel, putting visitors at the heart of this cinematographic experience. Gherardo Felloni believes that the essence of Roger Vivier can be distilled into three fundamental pillars: silhouette, colour and exclusivity. Each one is articulated in new ways. The distinctive silhouette is enhanced by a low kitten heel creating a modern look with couture flair. When it comes to colour, Felloni never shies away from it. The rich colour palette carried through the collection is not just a bold style statement, it is a powerful vehicle to project the joie-de-vivre and positivity that have always been part of Roger Vivier’s DNA. Exclusivity, the final essential ingredient articulated by the designer in his collection is a nod to Monsieur Vivier’s creations, unique works of art commissioned for special occasions that showcased exceptional craftsmanship, unbridled creativity, elaborate shoes embellished with feathers, crystals, knotted threads.
22
At the heart of the collection, the Très Vivier creations continue a long tradition of unapologetic elegance, displaying the same head-turning qualities as the legendary pumps that took the fashion world by storm in the 1960s. The large square buckle in polished metal pays tribute to the aesthetics of the original pump, while a myriad of materials and textures brings Vivier sophistication, and the new Très Vivier bag with an oversized buckle is designed to be perfectly paired with the pumps.

“Hotel Vivier is a place like no other, where women
reveal all the richness, complexity, beauty and intensity of their personalities. Just as I went on a journey of discovery over the years to capture their many facets, my guests will make their own discoveries at every turn and inside every room, meeting the characters who inspire me every day.” – Gherardo Felloni

ENRICO CASATI SHOES ITALY WHERE AN AFFORDABLE PRICE CAN BE ASSOCIATED WITH QUALITY, EXPERTISE AND “MADE IN ITALY”
26
MENS’ SHOES
Our story begins with… …a leap in the dark, when two young people, Enrico Casati and Jacopo Sebastio leave their respective jobs to launch their own business in Milan. It was summer 2012 when Enrico realised the lack of classic, hand-made, shoes that would fit his suits, at accessible prices. With this consideration, he became the first representative of the customer segment that would have eventually become his own target.
The Keys of Velasca’s Success Velasca is increasingly recognised as a successful reality: not by chance, it is continuing to attract capitals from external investors. The keys of Velasca’s success were and are mainly due to its founders’ ability in recognising a market opportunity in the shoe-business, creating a new paradigm in which affordable price can be associated with quality, expertise and “Made in Italy”. This sensitivity was well-paired with the exploitation of the most promising sales channel of our times (e-commerce), that differentiated Velasca from every other classic producer of handcrafted shoes, dismantling every barrier between the producer and the consumer. As many other entrepreneurs, Enrico and Jacopo started their activity with a pretty small investment. “It was a leap in the dark, - Enrico explains - both of us left a secure job and had just some available savings. We expected hard times, but we believed in our starting idea and we were completely future-oriented. This has enabled us to not loose our goal: we have bet and we won!” Enrico tells about Velasca with a contagious enthusiasm: after all, Velasca’s numbers represent the measure of its success (in 2017, the turnover was about 3 million euros). Enthusiasm is also what he looks for in his collaborators: “Having the right team is a critical source of competitive advantage: in Velasca, we look for people who are able to reinvent themselves, that has a certain risk-attitude [the same that has encouraged him and Jacopo in undertaking the idea] and are willing to provide their own contribute to the company.”
Together with his friend Jacopo, Enrico proposed a new brand, not intercepting an existing demand, but creating a new one: customers willing to buy premium quality shoes at affordable prices.
Enrico Casati (left) and Jacopo Sebastio (right
Apart from brand equity, one of the main reasons why premium shoes are expensive is the many passages the final product has to make before reaching the final customer. In order to guarantee affordable prices (maximum 200), Velasca avoids all these intermediate passages and exploits the e-commerce channel to establish a direct relationship with its customers: from the artisan to the client. “To be a successful entrepreneur, you need to wear many different “hats” according to the situation: everything you meet can become an opportunity to learn.”

DRIVING MISS DAISY
A DRIVING & COMPANIONSHIP SERVICE The 1989 film, ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ depicted a trusted relationship between a driver and his passenger, and through the film topical issues, including independence, companionship, loneliness and dementia were covered.
All drivers and companions (sometimes people just want company in their own home) are CRB Police-checked, first-aid trained, Dementia Friends, uniformed and trained to deliver the services the Driving Miss Daisy way. It is a door-todoor service, picking a client up from their door and making sure the journey or outing is anxietyfree, safe and enjoyable, before returning them home and ensuring they are settled again. From simple journeys to shopping, medical appointments (we accompany clients into the appointments, if requested), social outings to extended stays, Driving Miss Daisy provides the service to enable people to live life to the full. We also provide home-to-holiday services, transporting people to and from airports, sea ports and holiday destinations.
Today, here in the UK, the Driving Miss Daisy offers a driving and companion services, enabling people in their local communities to lead more independent and fulfilling lives. Based in Port Solent, Portsmouth, Driving Miss Daisy UK’s fleet of specialist vehicles are adorned with the brand’s daisy symbol and the drivers are affectionately known as ‘Daisies’. There are over 30 franchises in the UK from Glasgow to the Isle of Wight, including Eastleigh, Lee-on-Solent, Isle of Wight, Havant and Hayling Island, Winchester, Whitchurch, Alton and East Hants, Chichester and Bersted, in the local area. The brand’s motto is ‘We’re family when family can’t be there’, and that is exactly what the service is about; and it applies equally to users who want to go somewhere and do not have family to ask, to sons and daughters who experience demands on their time from elderly parents, children and full-time job commitments. Isolation, loneliness and the inability to easily get out and about, especially if you are a wheelchair user, are major issues for families, as well as local and central Government. Driving Miss Daisy tackles all of this with their fleet of specialist vehicles, of which the majority are wheelchair accessible.

Havant based Director, Tina Webb is passionate about the brand “We literally change people’s lives and it often doesn’t take a lot to make a huge impact on how someone can really get their independence back and live life to the full. For example, taking a lady with severe sight impairment to church once a week; before we became involved, the lady had been housebound for 18 months for fear of tripping on her garden path”. Tina continues “We take a husband of 90 to see his wife of 65 years who now lives in a Care Home for people living with Dementia. Then there are the parents who need help with the school run and activities; the friends who want to go shopping; the wheelchair user who wants support at the hospital, and so it goes on. Driving Miss Daisy enables people; we make a real difference”.
Glowing testimonials from satisfied customers are featured on Driving Miss Daisy’s website and on their Facebook Pages. These all touch upon real human interest values, and the demand for their services is growing fast. Each month, the Client Services Centre team literally takes hundreds of calls from clients and their families. The team often receive calls from people who simply haven’t spoken to anyone for days and the difference they make is immense. Sometimes it’s just going the extra mile and adding the simple pleasures in life that make all the difference. The Daisies have highlighted just some of these to include providing a newspaper for a lady who doesn’t remember to get one on her way home; to delivering a slice of cake to a favourite customer; a simple text being sent to ensure a client is coping; settling someone back in their home, with their comfy slippers and a cup of tea, to sending a
reassuring text to a mum to let her know her daughter is safely at school.

WINE & FOOD
HARVEST TIME • OCTOBER 2018 To pick or not to pick “Harvest is one of the most exciting and crucial times of the year on the vineyard” -Augusta Raimes The bumper harvest this year has created an excited buzz among English vineyards. A near perfect season for fruit has meant yield has been considerably bigger in comparison to previous years. However the bumper fruit volumes have also brought with them bumper challenges. Grapes are hand harvested bunch by bunch, row by row so harvest has stretched over more days. A storm in between days pushed Raimes back to avoid diluting the natural sugar levels of the grapes. “Good grapes make good wine” says Augusta who runs the vineyard with husband Robert “and we are very fortunate that the chalky terroir on our farm is ideal to produce and the care we put into growing produces high quality grapes.” Augusta and Robert Raimes are the fifth generation of farmers to farm their land on the Grange Farm Estate in Tichborne so growing is not just part of their everyday life, it’s in their soul. The grape harvest is concentrated into a short space of time, usually a few days. The grapes are so delicate and are harvested carefully by hand, picked into crates and then taken to the winery to be pressed.

Picking has to be done at just the right time to achieve a perfect balance of sugar and acidity. Sample readings of grape ripeness are taken leading up to harvest to pinpoint the ideal start date. The winery will be receiving grapes from several vineyards so slots must be booked in the press; grapes picked and delivered as a press load and pickers lined up accordingly. “We are hoping that this year’s abundance of fruit will allow Raimes to create some different wines such as a Rose or a Blanc de Blanc to add to our collection, which is very exciting” Festive Cellar Door at Raimes English Sparkling We will be open for free tastings and special case deals* for Christmas on Sunday 2 December. Drop in to our wine barn at Raimes, Grange Farm, Tichborne, SO24 0NE any time between 2 and 5pm for a taste of our award-winning Blanc de Noirs and Classic.
Bream with Scallops & Clams
Ingredients • 4 gilt head bream fillets • 40g samphire • Handful of fresh chopped coriander • 100ml cooking wine • 200g unsalted butter (cut into inch thick cubes and keep cool) • 320g Palourde clams • 200g King Scallops, halved (perhaps add in one or two extra so you can divide them between the four plates evenly) • 60g baby spinach (use a bit more if you are a big fan of spinach) • 2 lemons • 800g baby new potatoes • Pepper • Salt • Olive oil Method 1 Wash the potatoes, boil water in a pan and add a teaspoon of salt 2 Add the potatoes to the boiling water and cook for about 15 minutes (they should still be firm), then refresh well in cool water and place to one side 3 Lightly oil and season the bream fillets, heat a tablespoon of oil in a large non-stick frying pan, and pan-fry the fillets skin side down for 3-4 minutes, then finish under the grill for about 2 minutes 4 As the fish cooks slice the new potatoes and pan-fry in a quarter of the butter until golden brown, this should take about five minutes 5 As the potatoes cook melt a third of the remaining butter in another hot pan, add the clams and gently pan fry until starting to open, then add in the scallops 6 Once the scallops have started to brown, add in the samphire and de-glaze with white wine and juice from the two lemons, melt in the remaining butter to achieve a sauce consistency 7 Add the spinach to the new potatoes, and serve when wilted 8 Split the potatoes and spinach between four bowls and place in the centre, and spoon the scallops, clams and sauce around, then place the bream fillet on top and sprinkle the herbs over

HAMBROOKS POTS AND PLANTERS
Big, bold and beautiful. Modern garden designers tend to lean towards this vision when asked to use pots and planters to create architectural interest in clients’ gardens. Historically, ornate traditional planters made in the beautiful materials of marble, cast iron and lead have long been used in gardens. Although in their heyday, these types of planters sat proud and majestically on the gates of country houses or adorned large sweeping terraces. Beauty of the material More often than not these planters remained empty, with their owners seemingly happy to allow the beauty of the material speak for itself. There is a lesson here somewhere. Pots and planters look great overflowing with the bright colours of seasonal flowers, or helping to show off a specimen shrub. However, the effect of a beautifully made pot in the less expensive material of clay, can often make a bigger impact. The humble flowerpot The Egyptians were the first to make use of clay producing the humble flowerpot to move their plants about. Of course, in our more recent centuries, it is the Greeks who are more famous for their beautiful terracotta pots. Also, the Cretans have long used their local clay to make big pots to store grain, olives and olive oil.
Hambrooks of Titchfield www.hambrooks.co.uk • 01489 572285
36
Earthy tones Authentic Cretan pots are fired up to 1150c, which means they can withstand the most brutal of our winter frosts. So in recent decades these very same pots, in all shapes and sizes have been finding their way to our shores. With their earthy tones of rust and tan, they have become increasingly popular as features in both the traditional and modern garden. Modern Lines For the more adventurous the huge range of frost resistant fibreglass pots is increasingly popular with people wanting something a little different. Not only can you have any shape or size to suit your garden, you can choose any colour under the rainbow and they come in a variety of finishes.
Fibreglass pots are strong, lightweight and durable and planted with a colourful display of plants add a touch of class to your contemporary or courtyard garden. Because they are so light, these fibreglass planters are easy to move, which allows for more experimental positioning. These planters are particularly useful in the northern areas of the garden where you can use them to help to brighten a dark or shady spot. Finally, they are relatively inexpensive. Finishing touches No matter what material or style suits your tastes and garden, pots and planters help to add the personal finishing touches to your outdoor space. Frame the borders of patios, terraces and balconies or use planted with small trees or specimen plants to add height to small courtyards or gardens. You can plant with evergreens, colourful seasonal plants, trees and bulbs. The choice is yours.

SOCIAL MEDIA AN ADDICTION?
Ovid’s tale of Narcissus talks of a man fatally gripped by self-obsession who falls in love with his own reflection, ‘when such beauty in the stream the youth observed, no more could he endure’. In the age of the selfie and the airbrushed reality of the Facebook post, we live in a society similarly paralysed by narcissism and self-obsession. A compulsive use of social media feeds an addiction – an addiction to self. Selfies and snap chat stories are little more than imagined realities, contrived for the immediate gratification of the thumbs up. Centrist dad rant over and by all means wave away my concerns. However, in a recent Times newspaper report, on a study of compulsive social media use by William Van Gordon, an alarming picture emerges of its lasting impact on mental health. Addiction has traditionally been categorised into two groups – chemical (drink and drugs) and behavioural (gambling). In his study Van Gordon talks of the modern phenomenon of ontological addiction, where excessive social media users become afflicted by self-obsession. There is an obvious and growing link between excessive social media use and poor mental health – notably with the growth of body dysmorphic disorder. Is society plainly unaware of the grip of social media? Van Gordon provokes a powerful question about social media
Seemingly we believe that it provides an instant story book for our life – but in doing so are we really living for the moment and frankly should the world really care what our dinner out looks like – heaven forbid we should talk to our partner? Too many young people now base their sense of worth and personal value on their number of likes. Worryingly it provokes amongst some teenagers an impossible pursuit of perfection and unhealthy lack of perspective. Additionally, when we are gripped by an inflated sense of self we can spurn those that we love, turning loved ones into modern day Echos and Ameinias, and reject what actual matters in life. This may all sound bleak and alarmist. But as parents and possibly teachers we can take control of the issue. Simply we can lead by example, not been locked to our phones and not living our lives through social media. Meaningful discussions at the dinner table and time doing what matters – this is where we can be that positive influence. At Portsmouth High School we haven’t taken the knee jerk reaction to ban the use of phones. Like Lady Marchmain’s shutting away of Sebastian’s whiskey decanters it just breaks trust and suffocates responsible choices. Promoting sensible and moderate use of social media is the best anecdote. We also through our Sixth Form weekly well-being hour and promotion of student enrichment allow our girls to nurture their own positive sense of self and gain a perspective that life is much than the retweet or thumbs up.

MARY POPPINS RETU Mary Poppins Returns is an upcoming American musical fantasy film directed by Rob Marshall and written by David Magee, from a story by Magee, Marshall, and John DeLuca. Based on the book series by P. L. Travers and a sequel film to 1964’s Mary Poppins, the film stars Emily Blunt as the title character, with Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Dick Van Dyke, Angela Lansbury, Colin Firth, and Meryl Streep in supporting roles. Van Dyke is the only actor from the original to return, portraying the son of one of his original characters. Set in 1935 London, 25 years after the events of the original film, it sees Poppins, the former nanny of Jane and Michael Banks, returning after a family tragedy.
The film was officially announced in September 2015. Marshall was hired later that month, and Blunt and Miranda were cast in February 2016. Filming lasted from February to July 2017, and took place at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, United Kingdom. Mary Poppins Returns is scheduled for release on December 19, 2018, giving it one of the longest gaps between liveaction film sequels in history at 54 years. Set in 1930s London, which is the time period of the original novels by P.L. Travers. The story follows Michael (Ben Whishaw) and Jane Banks (Emily Mortimer), who are now grown up. Michael is living with his three children (Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh, and Joel Dawson) and housekeeper Ellen (Julie Walters), in the house on Cherry Tree Lane.

BOOK REVIEW ANOTHER MURDER MYSTERY FROM LOCAL AUTHOR – PAULINE ROWSON
ON LOCATION WITH DI ANDY HORTON IN DEAD PASSAGE DEAD PASSAGE is number fourteen in the DI Andy Horton series of crime novels and like the others in this marine-set series it is set on Horton’s CID patch, Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight. As many of my readers know it is locations that often inspire me and in DEAD PASSAGE, Rat Island in Portsmouth Harbour is one of those. Here is another that tickled the little grey cells and is the focus of DI Andy Horton’s investigation into the mysterious death of a local politician twelve years ago. A mysterious telephone call sends Horton on a complex and twisted investigation into the death of a local politician twelve years ago and uncovers a trail of lies, secrets and revenge with roots deep in the past. ON THE SCENE WITH DI ANDY HORTON One of the locations that inspired me for the Inspector Andy Horton crime novel, DEAD PASSAGE, number 14 in the series, is a very interesting and ancient monument in the vibrant waterside city of Portsmouth (England) where the DI Andy Horton crime novels are set. In previous Horton novels I have featured the ancient fortifications of Old Portsmouth, which were erected by Henry VII and Henry VIII to protect the city from the marauding French. One very interesting area close by and full of historic significance is the Spur Redoubt listed as an Ancient Monument it is the only surviving extant length of the ramparts and moat which enclosed Portsmouth. The tunnel through the ramparts is also the route Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson took on his way to board HMS Victory for the Battle of Trafalgar on 14th September 1805.
Pauline Rowson is the author of nineteen crime novels: fourteen featuring the rugged and flawed Portsmouth detective, Inspector Andy Horton; three in the mystery series featuring Art Marvik, the troubled former Royal Marine Commando now an undercover investigator for the UK’s National Intelligence Marine Squad (NIMS) and two standalone thrillers, the award winning, In Cold Daylight and In For the Kill. She was brought up in Portsmouth and now lives on Hayling Island. For more information about Pauline Rowson and her books visit www.rowmark.co.uk

ORGANIC BEAUTY PRODUCTS to help your skin survive the Winter SenSpa, part of the historic Careys Manor Hotel in Brockenhurst, was recognised at The Beauty Bible Awards in London’s Belgravia. Created especially for SenSpa, the Wonder Eye Cream and the Detox Body Scrub each won a Beauty Steal Award, with both products praised for their great results and affordability. WIG SPECIALITIES expands private clients service Internationally renowned Wig Specialities, which has provided every imaginable type of wig for Broadway, the West End, Hollywood and TV for more than 40 years, is expanding the service it provides to private clients suffering from alopecia or undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy. The company’s new easy-to-use website showcases its services and explains how Wig Specialities bespoke services can help anyone undergoing the traumatic experience of hair loss. Says Wig Specialities managing director, Richard Mawbey: “There are many and varied reasons why women find themselves in need of good wigs or hair pieces and our many years of experience in this field helps our clients find something that is individually designed and made specifically for them. “Often first-time wearers have little or no knowledge of how any of this works and we endeavour to be as helpful and as caring as possible in order to achieve the finest results. It must be stated that we have no ready-to-wear wigs, as we only make to order.”
Richard Mawbey’s experience and values are at the heart of what makes Wig Specialities’ products and services the high quality they are. One of his main beliefs is that, if a wig cannot be styled in the same way as a natural head of hair, it should not be sold. This conviction comes from his early working experience as a hairdresser. As well as working closely over the decades with stars and household names, Wig Specialities has a select list of private clients, many with permanent hair loss, for whom Richard and his team sensitively age the wigs over the years. All this care and attention is now being offered to a wider clientele, to bolster the confidence of people at a very low time of their lives. It is nestled at the heart of historic Winchester that was once the seat of Anglo-Saxon and Norman royal power. This magnificent Cathedral is the resting place of Saxon royalty, bishops and Jane Austen, the much-loved English novelist. Started in 2006, the Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market is recognised as one of the best in Europe and loved for its unique location nestled between the iconic cathedral and the ice rink, the market includes over 100 chalet-stalls. 27 November – 1 December FESTIVAL THEATRE TICKETS Price: from £10 One of the UK’s best-loved stars, Ruth Jones makes her highly anticipated return to the stage in this witty, thoughtprovoking and bittersweet new play by William Gaminara. Based on the screenplay by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard Adapted by Lee Hall Music by Paddy Cunneen 20 – 24 November FESTIVAL THEATRE TICKETS Price: from £10 Young Will Shakespeare has writer’s block... the deadline for his new play - a comedy called Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate’s Daughter - is fast approaching, he’s struggling to finish the first line of a sonnet and he’s in dire need of inspiration. Then he meets the beguiling Viola de Lesseps, the beautiful daughter of a wealthy merchant. Viola is prepared to do anything - including risking the frosty disapproval of Queen Elizabeth I - to fulfil her illicit dream of performing on the London stage and pursuing a passionate affair with the greatest playwright of the age. This adaptation of the multi awardwinning film classic is exuberant, witty, funny, and a beautiful homage to love, art, and theatre itself.
This new production will be directed by Philip Breen, director of the highly acclaimed recent Royal Shakespeare Company productions of The Merry Wives of Windsor and The Hypocrite.
Under the watchful eye of Steven, their choirmaster, Connie, Ben, Diane and Bruno gather every week in the village hall to practice their accomplished acapella singing. They are a motley crew, but whatever their differences, whatever the problems they may have at home, all are happily bound together in their shared love of music. Until one day Maggie knocks on the door. . . Soon she is urging them to enter Talentfest, a potentially life-changing route to Britain’s Got Talent.
AN EVENING WITH ERIC & ERN AT CHRISTMAS 2 December 7.00pm FESTIVAL THEATRE TICKETS Price: from £10 A show for all the family from 8 to 80! Join Olivier-nominated Jonty Stephens and Ian Ashpitel in a brilliant homage to Britain’s best-loved comedy duo, crammed full of those famous Morecambe and Wise routines, sketches, songs and of course, a musical guest. You’ll feel you’ve experienced the real thing and been taken back to a world of sunshine and laughter. Bring the kids, they’ll love it as much as you did.
15 – 30 December FESTIVAL THEATRE TICKETS Price: from £10 A princess under a fairy’s curse pricks her finger on a spindle and sleeps for a hundred years, waiting to be woken by a prince’s kiss. But hold on a moment. There’s a distinctly different slant to this story. The princess is beautiful and spirited but there are two princes and a lot of threatening thorns. As for the fairy who caused all the trouble in the first place – well, putting things right isn’t as simple as casting another spell. Rufus Norris’s splendidly entertaining and mischievous version of the original fairy tale ventures beyond the usual ‘happy ever after’ ending with the prince and princess united. The course of true love never did run smooth – especially if your mother-in-law is an ogress with an unfortunate taste for human flesh... https://www.cft.org.uk/whats-on

An interview with
ASKHAM MAGIC
56
You have been performing outside of England. Could you tell us more about your travels and future projects? Yes, I have been performing in Frankfurt, Bremen, London, Portsmouth, Plymouth and Southampton. A lot of my performances were in the bars and restaurants in Germany, also this is where I launched my YouTube channel from. Looking to take my show on the road and hit Europe and maybe hop across the pond to the USA in the coming months.
Getting from military to entertainment was a big step. What has led to this change? It was, in fact many “big steps”. I guess the short answer is hardship, failure and never giving up. I went from Army to student to pirate fighter, to underwater diver, to special forces candidate to magician. Not your typical route. I met a royal marine that goes by the name of the magic marine and he shows me what he can do, and it blew me away. Later a family friend introduced me to Gee Whiz who has supported me with learning what I need. A lot of people view magic as card tricks. What are the ‘tricks’ you do? I love card performances I think when you have a great performer that handles cards well you are in for a real treat. However, this is extremely hard as there is so much talent out there! But.... I have found something that I am building for stage. I can’t tell you about it here however if you follow my social media for details the BIG release of this stage act will be announced on there soon! nobody that I have spoken to about this (all of whom have 5 to 50 years’ experience in magic) have ever heard of it being done before, and all agree that it will be epic when it’s complete. Besides from performing magic, what are your other interests? I love the environment and history and being out in nature is wonderful. Bushcraft/wilderness camping is a hobby of mine and between you and me with this magic journey I’m going to save the world!
What was the most dangerous trick you have performed? Time traveling can be pretty dangerous! But I can always fix the mess that people make when we have time travelled. Luckily, I am a member of AWS Magic Club which is the 4th oldest club in the country and used to have the legendary Harry Houdini as a member. I am building some dangerous escapology into my show in honour of the passed greats! At the moment the most dangerous performance I do includes fire and a very sharp spear.
As a magician, you need to be able to distract your audience and to silence their awareness. What is the key to that? That is part of the magician’s code of secrets that can only be given to budding new magicians. If you wish to develop your skills in the magical arts and receive professional instruction you can contact me through Facebook & Instagram by searching for @Askham_Magic 57
