The Gamblers October 2014

Welcome to our Autumn Season Welcome to a packed Autumn Season at Dundee Rep! We are proud of the extraordinary diversity of the programme here at the Rep and we hope that there truly is something for everyone. Dundee Rep Ensemble presents a mini-festival of work by one of the greatest American playwrights of all time, Tennessee Williams. Starting with the all-time classic The Glass Menagerie, directed by Jemima Levick, and continuing with the Scottish premiere of some of his beautiful short plays under the collective title Talk to Me Like the Rain and Let Me Listen..., which tour community venues in and around Dundee. Our aim is that everyone in the city should have access to the work of this great writer at some point in the Autumn! We continue to explore new collaborations and touring with other theatre companies — this gets Dundee talked about across the country. With Newcastle-based Greyscale, we are co-producing a new all-female version of the Russian classic The Gamblers by Nikolai Gogol, starring Ensemble member Emily Winter and touring to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle. And, following the tremendous success of The BFG with you, the audience, last Christmas, we return to Roald Dahl by popular demand and

the fantabulous James and the Giant Peach. It’s hard to find a Christmastime show which gets the youngest children laughing at exactly the same things as the great-grandparents, but, with Roald Dahl’s work, we think we’ve found something that truly does appeal to every age! Scottish Dance Theatre’s international reputation seems to grow more stellar with every passing season, and this Autumn, after performing both Fleur Darkin’s Miann and Innocence at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, they head off to India and China. Our visiting company dance programme includes visits from both Scottish Ballet and Company Chordelia in association with Scottish Opera. Rep Creative Learning are always busy, but this season they are really pulling all the stops out! Our Community Company production Not Worth a Jot is a play with songs in the style of a 1920s cabaret and, in November, we play host to the UK-wide Shakespeare Schools Festival — plus an ever-growing number of participatory activities at all levels and a brand new playwriting & playreading group. We hope that you find something to thrill you here at the Rep, Philip and Jemima Artistic Directors

THE GLASS MENAGERIE by Tennessee Williams directed by Jemima Levick designed by Alex Lowde lighting by Mark Doubleday sound design by RJ McConnell Wed 3 – Sat 20 September at 7.30pm Matinees Thus 11 & 18 and Sats 13 & 20 at 2.30pm Previews Wed 3 & Thu 4 at 7.30pm Friday 19 September at 7.30pm Saturday 20 September at 2.30pm

Widely regarded as one of Tennessee Williams’ most powerful and haunting plays, The Glass Menagerie is a deeply personal, touching and profound tale of love and loss, illusion and escape, fragility and innocent hope. Tom Wingfield invites us to join him on a journey — looking back at his life with his mother Amanda and sister Laura and through the unrelenting memories that led to his final escape. As he looks back at his life in St Louis, we learn that Tom has the soul of a poet, but his job in a shoe warehouse leaves him longing for adventure and an escape from his mother’s suffocating embrace.

As he finds himself under increasing pressure to find a gentleman caller and a future for Laura, he eventually arranges to bring someone home to meet his sister. And when the gentleman caller does finally appear, Laura and Amanda become more hopeful than they have ever been — what follows is one of the most compelling and heartbreaking stories ever told. Often cited as one of the world’s most popular plays, this American classic is considered to be a semi-autobiographical work of genius. One of Williams’ most sensitive and magical pieces, The Glass Menagerie is a sharp reminder of the importance of accepting reality, the power of memory and the true meaning of escape.

“I didn’t go to the moon, I went much further — for time is the longest distance between two places”

Dundee Rep Ensemble presents

TALK TO ME LIKE THE RAIN AND LET ME LISTEN… four short plays by Tennessee Williams directed by Irene Macdougall set designed by Leila Kalbassi costumes designed by Enza Dormizzi lighting by Ian Dow Touring Dundee’s community centres Tue 20 October – Sat 1 November

The Rep’s celebration of the work of Tennessee Williams continues with an evening of his short plays, performed in community venues across Dundee. From the mid-1930s, long before he achieved recognition with The Glass Menagerie, Williams was a prolific writer of poetry, short stories & short plays. It is in these mini-dramas, full of poetic insight, that he began exploring his life-long theme of the search for salvation, happiness — paradise even — in an imperfect world. This Property is Condemned Willie, a teenage girl in a ragged party dress, lives alone in her family’s abandoned house, and then one day, playing on the railroad track, she meets a boy who will listen to her story. Talk to Me Like the Rain and Let Me Listen… A young couple create a quiet place of refuge for themselves in the midst of a cruel city.

Mr Paradise A young woman seeks out the poet Anthony Paradise in his squalid house in New Orleans, determined to tell the world of his greatness — but ‘Paradise’ is just a pen-name, and he insists she wait until his death. Auto-da-Fé A classic Tennessee Williams encounter between a mother and her son, Eloi, whose world is blown apart by the discovery of an indecent photograph.

perfect little gems of plays, never before performed in Scotland “These little songs, however little and unimportant they are, they keep on singing forever.” [Mr Paradise]

DANCE DERBY in association with Scottish Opera Wed 29 October at 7.30pm This powerful and hugely energetic dance theatre production opened to critical acclaim during Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2013 and now comes to Dundee Rep for one night only. The dance marathons of Depression-era America, with strict rules, extreme conditions and ferocious competition, were the reality shows of their day. Attracting huge audiences they could last for weeks on end, with competitors stopping for only ten minutes every two hours to sleep or wash. “…a beautifully wrought landscape of public humiliations and private grief.” ***** The Herald Tickets: £14, SnrCitz/Unemployed £2 off, Young Person (16-26)/Students £2 off, Friends £3 off, Children/Schools £2 off, Dundee Student Pass £5.

NOT WORTH A JOT

Fri 1 & Sat 2 August at 7.30pm — Matinee Sat 2 at 2.30pm Not Worth a Jot scratches through the glamour and sheen of the 1920s to expose what’s lurking underneath. A world full of crime and corruption: a world where amorality is a virtue and deviousness a blessing: a world much like our own. A new king is being crowned and hope is once again rising in the city. Cop or crook, whore or reverend, this is a new era, a chance to escape the past. Devised and created by Dundee Rep’s Community Company, Not Worth a Jot is a play with songs that bursts onto the stage with all the bravado and swagger of a 1920s Cabaret. Tickets: £9, SnrCitz/Unemployed £7, Young Person (16-26)/Students £7, Friends £8, Dundee Student Pass £5. Theatre

Through storytelling and visual performance the Deaflinks group will work with Gerry Ramage and Katrina Fisher from Solar Bear to devise a performance, scripted by playwright Sylvia Dow, where they will share their memories and stories. by Federico Garcia Lorca in a new version by David Ireland directed by Jenny Sealey designed by Lisa Sangster Wed 4 March – Sat 14 March 2015 at 7.30pm Matinees Thu 12 and Sat 14 March at 2.30pm Preview Wed 4 and Thu 5 March at 7.30pm In 2014 who can love who? Are there infatuations that still remain taboo? David Ireland’s radical new take on Lorca’s play is fuelled by searing lust, love and rebellion against social mores. In a society where almost anything goes, there are boundaries that still can’t be crossed. When a young man and woman are overrun with passion and defy their families the consequences are still fatally heartbreaking in this modern day re-telling of a classic. Tickets
