WELCOME "The times they are a-changin’..." Bob Dylan's fifty year old song, inspired by Scottish folk ballads in response to a changing moment in time, has never seemed more appropriate. The world seems to get stranger – and often more scary – with every passing day. Over the next six months, Dundee Rep Ensemble will be interrogating a cultural influence which still holds so much sway over us: the American Dream. The Stars and Stripes Season kicks off with one of the greatest American plays, Death of a Salesman. The story of Willy Loman and his family burns with intense emotion. We aim to break your hearts with ensemble members Billy Mack and Irene Macdougall as Willy and Linda Loman, live music composed by Nikola Kodjabashia and an elemental design from Neil Warmington (Further Than the Furthest Thing in 2012). Our ensemble are joining forces with actors from Poorboy Ensemble to create a new play set in Dundee. Sandy Thomson, Artistic Director of Poorboy, will write and direct Monstrous Bodies (chasing Mary Shelley down Peep O'Day Lane). With Britain at war with the USA, the play explores Mary Shelley's time here in the city, just before the teenage author wrote Frankenstein. Intertwining Mary's story with a young woman's in modern day Dundee, it's a vibrant tale of fearless women. Our community tour will take on the disconcerting resurgence of far-right rhetoric with a touring production of The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui by Bertolt Brecht, adapted by Scottish playwright Alistair Beaton. Set in 1930s Chicago, the play is a parable of Hitler's rise to power. Coming to both the Dundee Rep stage and a Community Centre near you.

In February, Scottish Dance Theatre return to their home stage with a première of a new work, TuTuMucky, by hip hop choreographer Botis Seva. Presented as part of a double bill with Dreamers, Fleur Darkin and her ensemble ensure that Dundee remains the place to be for cutting edge dance. Our ever ambitious Creative Learning team have been working with theatres across the UK on a new commission. The Blue Road is premièred in June. Our programmer, Viktoria Begg, has left no stone unturned in her quest to offer you compelling and diverse shows over the next six months. We have local heroes (Shaper Caper and The Scaffies), comedic thinkers (Jon Ronson, Mark Thomas and Limmy), and big-belting Musical Theatre (The Dolls and Buddy). We are also proud to be the only venue north of the border to be presenting Room, an exciting new novel adaptation from your National Theatre of Scotland. Add into the mix a jam-packed Children's Theatre Festival during the Easter Holidays, some of Scotland’s hottest theatre-makers joining us for Gallus Theatre Week in March and even a bit of Agatha Christie in July, I'm confident there's something of interest to you in the coming months. See you here soon. Joe Douglas Associate Artistic Director

THE SCAFFIES
Wed 25 January – Thu 2 February, 7.30pm Matinee: Sat 28 January, 2.30pm From the writer of the highly acclaimed sell-out comedy play The Berries, Gary Robertson brings us another hilarious offering of Dundee life with The Scaffies. The year is 1978, and Britain is experiencing social and political turmoil with a strong threat of nationwide strike action and disruption for many public sector workers. For one group of Dundee cleansing workers, it’s business as usual... for the time being anyway. Theirs is a sometimes thankless job of hard graft, sweat, grime and filth which they combat with serious bouts of heavy drinking and merciless exchanges of banter, mickey-taking and black humour. From the high hopes and expectations of a nation entering the World Cup in Argentina to the harsh conditions of an unforgiving winter, follow The Scaffies as we step back in time to a culture long gone. This is working class humour at its raw best, transported straight from the streets and straight into the theatre.
“Once I started working with the scaffies myself, I thought it was a rich source of material there, hearing all the old stories. It’s a comedy play about a squad of binmen and their daily goings-on to get through the hardships of the job.” Gary Robertson

MARK THOMAS – THE RED SHED Directed by Joe Douglas
Sat 4 February, 7.30pm Red Shed is the third part in a trilogy that started with the multi-award winning shows Bravo Figaro and Cuckooed. A story of strikes, fights, dinner ladies and commies. Crap beer, great beer, burgers and burger slingers. Pickets, placards, friendship, love, history, dreams and above all remembering. Multi award winner Mark Thomas returns to where he first started to perform, a red wooden shed in Wakefield, the labour club, to celebrate its 50th birthday. The show will involve the audience (in a nice way) to recreate the shed and its inhabitants. Recommended for ages 16+ 75 minutes, no interval
Part theatre, stand up, journalism, activism it’s the story of the battle for hope and the survival of a community in a small wooden shed. “A mighty monologue, rich in the history not only of his own political formation, but also of Britain itself, over the last generation.” The Scotsman "Slick, crafted, compelling, poignant and bloody funny.” Three Weeks

THE RED CHAIR Written and performed by Sarah Cameron Directed by Suzy Willson Music by Paul Clark Produced in association with Fuel
Fri 31 March, 7.30pm A contemporary take on folk and fairytale storytelling traditions, Sarah Cameron’s towering solo performance is a surreal ballad populated with larger than life characters. Told in a rich and saucy Scots dialect with physical verve, a wee dram of whisky to oil the way and a musical score that rolls in like mist over the hills. The Red Chair sees acclaimed Dundeeborn performer Sarah Cameron steer us through a landscape of twisted reason, extreme compulsion and eye watering complacency, where domestic drudgery happens on an operatic scale and a father's dereliction of duty reaches epic proportions.
“Told entirely in an exhilarating Scots dialect and every word was as toothsome as a toasted teacake... A story never tasted so good." Argus Angel Award Winner, Brighton Festival 2015 Edinburgh Guide “The quality of the performance is astonishing and unforgettable.” The Scotsman on Clod Ensemble
The Red Chair is based on Sarah’s original book that had its first public reading as part of The House of Fairytales at the Port Eliot Festival. It lies somewhere between a Grimm’s Tale, an absurdist ghost story and a parent’s guide on how not to bring up children. Recommended for ages 14+ 100 minutes, no interval

“on the northern shores of the Tay, near Dundee... the airy flights of my imagination, were born” Mary Shelley, Author’s Introduction to Frankenstein 1831 It’s 1812 and the country is coming apart at the seams. War, poverty and riots make it a dangerous place for a young girl. After a furious row with her stepmother she is sent away from home, alone, into the care of the rich and radical Baxter family of Dundee. Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin is fourteen and hasn’t met the man who will make her Mary Shelley yet. She hasn’t done anything yet. But her genius for finding trouble pitches her into a world of politicians, revolutionaries, lunatics, American fugitives and the ladies of The Glassite Church Floral Tea Committee. In 2017, Roxanne had so much studying to do for school she nearly didn’t go to the party on Peep O’Day Lane. But everyone needs a night off, right? She doesn’t mean to crash out but when someone takes a topless photo of her, Roxanne’s life as she knows it is over.

DAPHNE ORAM’S WONDERFUL WORLD OF SOUND
Fri 2 June, 7.30pm Live-scored by electronic sound artist Anneke Kampman, Daphne Oram’s Wonderful World of Sound is a visually arresting journey through the amazing life of one of the great, unsung composers of the twentieth century. In 1942, a séance inspires seventeen-year-old Daphne Oram to found the world-famous BBC Radiophonic Workshop and in the process reshape the entire development of electronic music. One of the most distinctive composers of the 20th century, Daphne Oram was a pioneer of sound who cut a trailblazing path through uncharted musical territory. This is her story and the story of those following in her wake. Award-winning Glasgow-based ensemble Blood of the Young team up with SAY-nominated sound artist Anneke Kampman to explore the life and ideas of a true innovator who sacrificed everything for her art.
“Electrifying... it carries a real shiver of innovation.” The Scotsman, on Blood of the Young's Golden Arm Theatre Project “SECRET SHOW 1 is an unpretentious, accessible, genuinely joyous communal theatrical experience... the most entertaining show I've seen this year” Exeunt Magazine, on Blood of the Young’s Secret Show 1 The Herald The List

SINDERINS Plus support
Sat 3 June, 7.30pm With three singer-songwriters and an array of instruments both conventional and outlandish, Sinderins is a band that defies categorisation. Although the term 'space folk' has been coined in an attempt to describe their sound, their songs also throw elements of Jazz, Blues, Hip Hop, Rock and World Music into the cauldron. Following the official release of their debut album in 2016, Sinderins have honed their skills even further by playing a host of diverse venues around the country, from London's The Groucho Club to the Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where the band's performance at the Blue Tent was recorded live for BBC World on 3.
“Scotland distils the finest malt whiskies in the world. They’re to be sipped and savoured. So are Sinderins. If there’s any justice in the world, they’ll be the next Mumford And Sons.” Get Ready To Rock
A swarthy batch of young cronies made up from the parts of Dundee’s recent hot bands. The line-up of instrumentation they employ hints at the unusual sound they have harnessed – bouzouki, mandolin, harmonium, double bass, autoharp – the list goes on. With the musicians alternating between microphones and instruments to meet the demands of each song, their live shows afford the audience not only a unique sonic experience, but an impressive spectacle as well.

Tue 13 – Sat 17 June, 7.30pm Matinees: Thu 15 & Sat 17 June, 2.30pm Emma Donoghue’s best-selling novel Room has been adapted as a new play with songs by Scottish songwriter Kathryn Joseph and Cora Bissett. Previously adapted by Donoghue for the screen, the film won Academy Awards, Golden Globes and BAFTAs. Kidnapped as a teenage girl, Ma has been locked inside a purpose built room in her captor’s garden for seven years. Her five year old son, Jack, has no concept of the world outside and happily exists inside Room with the help of Ma’s games and his vivid imagination where objects like Rug, Lamp and TV are his only friends. But for Ma the time has come to escape and face their biggest challenge to date: the world outside Room.
“You would fight anyone who tried to wrestle [the book] from your grasp with the same ferocity that Ma fights for Jack, such is the author’s power to make out of the most vile circumstances something absorbing, truthful and beautiful.” The Guardian

THE RESISTABLE RISE OF ARTURO UI By Bertolt Brecht In a translation by George Tabori Revised by Alistair Beaton Director Joe Douglas
Thu 8 – Sat 10 June, 7pm
Community Tour Dates
When Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933, Brecht made the decision to flee his home country with his young family, rather than stay and be victimised for his political beliefs. It proved a shrewd move, as the Nazi party fed the fears and injustices felt by the population, marching them towards World War II and the Final Solution.
All performances at 7pm
Written when Brecht was a refugee in Finland, The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui charts Hitler’s rise to power as a parable play. Arturo Ui is a wannabe gangster in 1930s Chicago, very firmly in Al Capone’s shadow. But with a bit of muscle from his companions and a few “acting” lessons, a man can run any town. And maybe the town next to that. Dundee Rep Ensemble take on this funny, gutsy, enlivening play, first produced 60 years ago by the Berliner Ensemble. Brecht fled to the USA because it offered sanctuary from fascist Europe. The final play in our Stars and Stripes Season asks us, in 2017, to spot the signs of hate and encourages us to resist. A satirical, musical-comedy, touring to Community Centres, Village Halls and the Dundee Rep stage in June.

The forest. The wake of an unnamed crisis. A group of young people work to make sense of what happened, what it means, and what they will do now.
Taking inspiration from The Blue Road by Laura Lomas and drawing on personal and political stories from near and far, this new performance will explore what home means to us in 2017.
The Blue Road is an exciting new play by acclaimed writer Laura Lomas exploring memory, loss, living in the aftermath and our capacity to begin again. Mokita (Kivila, Papa New Guinea): The truth everyone knows but agrees not to talk about.
In these short, evocative works based on overheard conversations in cities and towns across the country, Craig Taylor captures the state we’re in with humour and pathos and perfect timing.
In No Offence, but... Dundee Rep Young Company present an exploration of language, both spoken and unspoken. The words they want to say and the questions they want to ask.
Join Dundee Rep’s Community Company for an evening of performance – sometimes funny, sometimes heart-breaking, these tiny plays in which every one of us could have a starring role are windows into other people’s lives that reveal the triumphs, disasters, prejudices, horrors and joys of twenty-firstcentury life in Britain.
The company want to know what happens when you just can’t find the right words, when language isn’t enough. Reflecting on times where they wish they had said it differently, this exciting group of theatre makers ask ‘What are the moments in life there are no words for?’

Commissioned and supported by National Theatre of Scotland and Dundee Rep
Fri 21 & Sat 22 July 2017, 7.30pm
Thu 3 August, 7.30pm
August 1972 – Idi Amin had a dream and ordered the expulsion of all Asians from Uganda under a 90-day deadline. From Uganda to Dundee, Jaimini Jethwa grew up in Scotland knowing nothing about her homeland until she found herself being haunted by Idi Amin. She started to run but he was everywhere.
YDance (Scottish Youth Dance) is the National Dance Organisation for children and young people in Scotland. Each year since 2006 the Project Y company has brought together 24 talented young dancers aged sixteen to twenty one from across Scotland who have a unique opportunity to work with top professional choreographers to develop their talent and create new work.
Performed by one woman to a live urban soundtrack, through the street sounds of Dundonian dialect, The Last Queen of Scotland is Dundee playwright Jaimini Jethwa’s homage to her city – her ‘love letter to the D'. Previewing at Dundee Rep before opening at Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Join the conversation: #LastQueenOfScotland
The 2017 tour features four new contemporary dance works choreographed by Gary Clarke, Hagit Yakira, Steven Martin and Theo Clinkard. “exuberant... delivered up with such zing and precision...” The Herald on Project Y
