Welcome to our brand new season, new in more ways than one. We are delighted to introduce the first season of shows from our new Artistic Director - Andrew Panton. We also, as you might have noticed, have a fresh new look for the Rep. This is an exciting time to be based in vibrant Dundee and the Rep is proud to continue to be at the creative heart of this great city. Our new season offers something for everyone, from full scale ensemble productions to intimate performances. We hope you will join us for what promises to be one of our most exciting seasons to date as we bring our beloved building to life.

HELLO It’s an exciting feeling to be writing my first season forward for Dundee Rep, a theatre that I’ve admired, watched shows in and made work for over the years. I’m proud to be building on the legacy of wonderful previous artistic directors Hamish Glen, James Brining, Dominic Hill, Philip Howard, Jemima Levick and Joe Douglas - many of whom I have had the great pleasure of collaborating with here at the Rep. I’ve been made to feel very welcome in the last few weeks since I started in my new role as Artistic Director. So what can you expect from the next chapter? My aim is to bring work to Dundee audiences that will excite and inspire. We can change the way we feel about each other and the world we live in by telling stories using words, song, music, movement and dance and that’s what I’m interested in making for you, with you, and about you in our theatre. In my first season, we’ll produce a Scottish Premiere of a modern American classic, two thrillers from very different genres of theatre, a revival of a treasured Scottish comedy and a musical collaboration with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland which showcases the next generation of emergent talent onstage with our actors from the Rep Ensemble. I’ll be working with some of the country’s most exciting guest creatives to join our fabulous team here at the Rep who work, mostly behind the scenes, to ensure the heart of our theatre keeps beating with creative energy. Integral to this creative energy is our creative learning programme and the voices, creativity and stories of the communities we work with from across Dundee and beyond. We look forward to building on local and national partnerships to create exciting opportunities for these stories to be told. The Ensemble will continue to be at the centre of everything we do - the engine room of the Rep and the power with which to tell these stories. As well as the work we make here in Dundee, this season we are excited to welcome some of the biggest names in Scottish Theatre to the Rep such as Stellar Quines, Birds of Paradise, Utter and a co-production with Poorboy and Mull Theatre (Comar) along with welcoming back Craig Hill, BalletBoyz and our very own local hero, Gary Robertson with The Berries. We are also very pleased to host the award winning production Angel, the concluding part in Henry Naylor’s Arabian Trilogy. For Dundee Rep to play a part in this period of cultural growth in the city is a wonderful opportunity and it’s an honour to be steering that journey. I look forward to sharing our work with new Dundee audiences whilst also ensuring that audiences further afield get the chance to see our shows - they’re certainly something to shout about!

THE LAST QUEEN OF SCOTLAND
dundeerep.co.uk
“My Mum and Dad had £7 when they got here. They got 90 days to leave and seven shitty pounds. 90 days, two pints, one pack of fags, gone.” 1972, Idi Amin ordered the expulsion of Ugandan-Asians under a 90-day deadline. From Uganda to Dundee, a woman grows up knowing nothing about her homeland haunted by Amin’s impact on her destiny. Returning to Uganda years later she confronts his ghost. This is one story from a community in exile that sheds light on a unique period of untold history. Performed to a live soundtrack (Patricia Panther, Glasgow Girls) through the street sounds of Dundonian dialect as a homage to Jaimini’s city “the D”. Jaimini Jethwa is a Dundee based playwright and independent filmmaker. This is her first play at Dundee Rep and Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Director Jemima Levick’s most recent production The 306: Day for the National Theatre of Scotland, Perth Theatre and Stellar Quines in association with Red Note Ensemble, received great critical acclaim. lastqueenofscotland.com #LastQueenOfScotland

AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY
dundeerep.co.uk
This Scottish Premiere is the winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play. Tracy Letts’ August: Osage County then went on to be a major film with an all-star cast including Meryl Streep and Ewan McGregor. When alcoholic patriarch Beverly Weston mysteriously goes missing, the estranged members of the Weston family, ravaged by addiction, illness and deceit reluctantly return home. With the entire Weston clan confined to their country estate, troubled past relationships, lies and family secrets are spilled under the relentless Oklahoma sun of Osage County, bringing tensions to boiling point. Originally created by acclaimed Chicago ensemble theatre company Steppenwolf, this new production celebrates the ten year anniversary of its first production and will be created with the Rep’s very own resident Ensemble, directed by Andrew Panton as his first production as Artistic Director.

THE MAIDS
dundeerep.co.uk
Two maids, Solange and Claire, unable to escape their dismal, subjugated lives, and torn by both love and loathing of their Mistress, visualise dark and destructive scenarios to eliminate her. As their imaginations take hold and the action builds to a frenzy, so does the fear, excitement and thrill in this devious and violent triangle of love, hatred and disgust. Genet uses the themes of jealousy, murder and betrayal and subverts them with his own disturbing games of language, transgression and transformation. Directed by Eve Jamieson and featuring original Ensemble members Irene Macdougall, Ann Louise Ross and Emily Winter, The Maids is as powerful now as when it was first performed in 1947. This is an intense psychological thriller that you won’t want to miss!

DEATHTRAP
dundeerep.co.uk
Deathtrap holds the record as the longest running thriller in Broadway history. Washed-up playwright Sidney Bruhl is desperate - he’s not had a hit play in years, inspiration is nonexistent and funds are desperately low. A break in his fortunes occurs when a student asks him to read DEATHTRAP - a play Sidney immediately recognises as a potential Broadway hit. Chasing a desperate desire to once again be the toast of Broadway, Sidney is prepared to do whatever it takes. Deathtrap, it turns out, really is a play to die for. Plotting and double-crossing come thick and fast in this brilliant maze of backstabbing twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. One of the most successful black comedies ever, Deathtrap is a truly satisfying spine-chilling play-withina-play-within-a-play that will have you laughing and screaming in equal measure.

SPRING AWAKENING The Tony and Olivier award winning musical
dundeerep.co.uk
“I hear your heart beat Wendla. No matter where I am, I hear it beating.” Winner of eight Tony awards, four Oliviers and a Grammy for best original cast album, Spring Awakening redefined the boundaries between music and theatre with its fusion of adolescent angst-fuelled anthems. A group of emotionally unprepared teenagers try to understand their new, thrilling and scary feelings. What’s right and what’s wrong? What are the rules? How far can they be pushed and what happens when you break them? Desires, emotions and hormones smash and explode in this hard hitting punk-rock musical.

Passing Places is a hilarious road movie for the stage. Stephen Greenhorn’s much loved contemporary comedy has been described as a Scottish equivalent of Kerouac’s On the Road. In this high-octane, fast-paced, physical new production, the Dundee Rep Ensemble showcase their storytelling talents, propelling you up Scotland’s west coast from Fort William to Thurso and everywhere in between on a hilarious journey of self-discovery.

Weegie believe it? Scotland’s kilted comedy treasure is back - and we predict a riot (a riotous night of comedy that is…!) We love his high-octane shows and his tours are selling out in advance - so book early!
After their highly acclaimed debut Plan B for Utopia, Joan Clevillé Dance are back at Dundee Rep with The North, the bleak yet whimsical story of a young man’s journey in search for meaning in an unpredictable environment. BLANCHE & BUTCH Blanche & Butch are backstage in a mist of hairspray and sequins as they reminisce about life as a troupe of disabled drag queens. Butch sings touching ballads - he’s all about regrets and reflection. Blanche, all camp and pop songs, lip-syncs - well, tries to - his “unique speech pattern” means nothing ever syncs. And who’s the other guy? The awardwinning Birds of Paradise Theatre Company bring you a dazzling new production directed and designed by Kenny Miller and featuring new music and high camp! Praise for Paradise Theatre Company’s previous show Wendy Hoose “Rude, ribald and hilariously off-colour” The Guardian “Bold, entertaining and sensitive” The List Inspired by Noel Greig’s 2006 play Heelz and Wheelz and made in co-production with the Tron Theatre, Blanche & Butch tells the witty and poignant story of the lives, loves and losses of the three disabled men who used to be the sensational Heelz n Wheelz. There’s not much sensation now...
ALL OR NOTHING: THE MOD MUSICAL In 1964, a new phenomenon exploded onto the dingy British streets. It was the essence of all that was cool. It was Mod. Mods stuck two fingers up at the class-ridden society and its dull redundant culture. They were working-class free spirits who rode sexy streamlined Italian Vespas or Lambrettas. The sharpest Mod of all was known as a ‘FACE’. The Small Faces encapsulated all that is Mod, a unique blend of taste and testosterone, neat, clothes obsessed and street-wise. But these cult sophisticates shared another passion, their dedication to Rhythm ‘n’ Blues. This quintessentially British ‘Mod’ Musical celebrates the unique sound of the iconic ‘60s Mod band, The Small Faces. Featuring the music of The Small Faces, including an arsenal of brilliant hits like Whatcha Gonna Do About It, Lazy Sunday, Tin Soldier, Sha La La La Lee, Itchycoo Park and of course All Or Nothing.

BALLETBOYZ: 14 DAYS
WINNER of Fringe First Award 2016.
Celebrated across the world for their stunning live performances, films and TV work, BalletBoyz are back. 14 Days is their most ambitious production yet - involving five choreographers, five composers and five visual artists all playing with the theme of ‘time’. Unmissable.
2014. Kobane, Northern Syria. A city under siege by IS forces. The besiegers have modern tanks, howitzers and thousands of machine guns. The desperate people of Kobane are armed only with determination and ageing Russian rifles. Washington is predicting an inevitable defeat. But against all expectations, the brutal attackers are driven back. A team of Amazons - a group of female snipers called the YPJ - are instrumental in turning the tide... At the centre of the fighting: a pistachio farmer’s daughter called Rehana. She used to be a law student, but upon joining the resistance, she discovered she had a talent for killing... And now 100 jihadis lie dead. Shot by her hand. Now, she becomes the centre of an ISIS manhunt… Inspired by a true story. “One of the most powerful pieces of theatre I’ve seen in a long time.” Kirsty Lang, BBC Radio 4

THE BERRIES
ED BYRNE: SPOILER ALERT
From the writer of The Scaffies comes the longawaited return of The Berries. This hilarious play is set in the summer of 1974 in the berry fields of Kirriemuir and takes a nostalgic trip ‘doon memory dreel’ as we follow four ‘nabblers’ from the Fintry housing scheme during a typical day.
“I originally intended to call the show, ‘I’ll Millennial You in a Minute’, but my promoter considered the title, ‘off-puttingly baffling’. That’s my own chainsaw in the photo, by the way.”
Bouts of wild banter, topical and political debate are mixed with hopes and dreams to make sure the hard graft is forgotten, for the time being at least. Prowling in the background is the rough and temperamental character of Rab the foreman, making sure there is no slacking from the workers. For those who went to the berries, the memories and laughs will come flooding back and for those who didn’t, this play will certainly provide a comical insight into a culture long gone.

Is life that bad or have we good reason to complain about it? Are we filled with righteous anger at a world gone wrong or are we all just a bunch of whiny little brats? In short, are we spoiled? Come and watch as Byrne takes this question, turns it upside down and shakes it until the funny falls out. Go on, spoil yourself. “Comedy’s Holy Grail. Go See!” Sunday Times Ed’s television credits are countless (provided you’re really bad at counting); Mock The Week, Have I Got News For You, The Graham Norton Show, Live At The Apollo, The One Show, Comic Relief Bake Off 2015, The World’s Most Dangerous Roads and, most recently, he and Dara Ó Briain filmed the follow up to their Big Adventure show for BBC2 entitled Dara and Ed’s Road to Mandalay edbyrne.com

Presented by The Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh, Stellar Quines and Scottish Dance Theatre
THE LOVER At The Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh “Very early in my life it was too late”. In 1984 the great French novelist Marguerite Duras wrote the story of her own youth in Vietnam, a personal truth told in passionate, vivid fragments. These incandescent glimpses of remembrance became one of the most acclaimed and widely read books of modern French literature. Now three of Scotland’s major performing arts companies are collaborating in theatre and dance to bring her story to the stage; taking us back to 1929 when a fifteen year old girl crossing the Mekong Delta first catches the attention of an older Chinese man and accepts a ride in his chauffeured limousine. She has no idea how this chance meeting will change her life forever. 50 years on, looking back on their illicit affair which flared and died quickly, she finds the intensity of her first love still burning bright in her memory, illuminating a past fraught with the confusions of the lovers’ ruthless desire, her own dysfunctional family and the divisive colonial culture which pulled them apart. This unique collaboration between the Royal Lyceum Theatre, Stellar Quines and Scottish Dance Theatre brings this exotic tale of remembered passion to new life in an original stage adaptation by Jemima Levick and Fleur Darkin. Fusing spoken word, music and evocative dance, this production promises to be an irresistible blast of sensual heat for the dark days of January.
