WELCOME

REP DISCOVERY DEAL

...to the second half of our 17/18 season. As well as a fantastic range of visiting work, you have four opportunities to catch our awardwinning Ensemble on stage in Dundee before the summer arrives.

Our Discovery Deal gives you the chance to try something new with access to the best available seats. The more you see, the more you save.

Deathtrap is the most successful thriller in Broadway history, perfectly combining suspense and humour, making it a classic comedy thriller and the perfect antidote to those winter blues. Johnny McKnight will be directing for the first time here at the Rep and we’ll be welcoming back Kenny Miller to design. Spring Awakening introduces a special collaboration between Dundee Rep and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. It’s a unique opportunity for final year students to work with our resident Ensemble. It’s also an opportunity for us to present this Tony, Olivier and Grammy award-winning musical that re-defined the genre and feels as current now as ever. The 39 Steps by John Buchan has famously been adapted for film a number of times, notably by the master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock. In this version we’ll be telling the story on stage as a radio play, directed by Ensemble member, Irene Macdougall and touring community centres around the Dundee area. Passing Places is a road movie for the stage, loved by many, and the first from the pen of Stephen Greenhorn that you can see this season at the Rep. We are thrilled to present yet another diverse body of visiting work including the return of Stephen Greenhorn’s smash hit, Sunshine on Leith, The Chronicles of William McGonagall, David Baddiel’s My Family: Not The Sitcom and National Theatre of Scotland’s hot from the fringe festival, Adam and Eve, alongside football fans favourites; Singing I’m No A Billy, He’s A Tim and On Our Way to Lisbon. For laughs, Stewart Lee, Ed Byrne and Iain Stirling will certainly not disappoint and we have lots to entertain young people during the Easter holidays, including a beautifully intimate show in a caravan outside in Tay Square! As for dance lovers, we are thrilled to be presenting Scottish Dance Theatre’s newest work, RITUALIA by Colette Sadler, as part of a Double Bill with Botis Seva’s tour de force TuTuMucky in February and we are especially proud to announce Ballet Black will be performing here for their first time in June. Our Creative Learning team are passionate about creating platforms for children, young people and adults to tell and share incredible stories. We’ve got a packed season, so check out pages 18, 19, 36 & 37 for more details. All of the team at the Rep look forward to welcoming you to our amazing theatre. Please do stop and tell us what you think. That way we can continue to make sure that we produce and present the work you want to see.

DEATHTRAP

Washed-up Broadway playwright Sidney Bruhl is desperate for another hit show. Then Deathtrap, written by one of his students, turns out to be a play to die for. Prepared to do anything it takes to get that script into his hands and chasing a desperate desire to once again be the toast of Broadway, Sidney invites the student to his home. There the author and his wife cook up the almost unthinkable scheme. Everything appears to be going to plan but does Sidney’s student have other ideas and is Sidney being truthful about his intentions? Plotting and double-crossing come thick and fast in this brilliant maze of backstabbing twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. One of the most successful black comedies ever, Deathtrap is a truly satisfying spine-chilling play-within-a-play-within-a-play that will have you laughing and screaming in equal measure. Deathtrap holds the record as the longest running thriller in Broadway history.

SPRING AWAKENING The Tony and Olivier award winning musical

“I hear your heart beat Wendla. No matter where I am, I hear it beating.” Winner of eight Tony awards, four Oliviers and a Grammy for best original cast album, Spring Awakening redefined the boundaries between music and theatre with its fusion of adolescent angst-fuelled anthems. A group of emotionally unprepared teenagers try to understand their new, thrilling and scary feelings. What’s right and what’s wrong? What are the rules? How far can they be pushed and what happens when you break them? Desires, emotions and hormones smash and explode in this hard hitting punk-rock musical.

DOUBLE BILL This exciting double-bill from Scottish Dance Theatre pairs TuTuMucky by Botis Seva, a fresh voice in British dance, alongside the world premiere of RITUALIA by Colette Sadler, a brand new commission. Together they promise an evening of high-energy, futuristic, and engaging work. TuTuMucky Powerful and complex, TuTuMucky explores how we’re shaped by the world around us, searches for peace in chaos, and celebrates revolt against the regiments of modern daily life. Blurring the boundaries between ballet, contemporary dance, and hip-hop technique, this work challenges traditional convention to offer a distinctively innovative form of dance. A fresh, rhythmic, and explosive journey to places both familiar and strange set to an original musical backdrop by beat producer Torben Lars Sylvest. RITUALIA Berlin based visionary choreographer Colette Sadler returns to Scotland to work with Scottish Dance Theatre in a reimagining of Les Noces. Originally premiered in Paris in 1923 by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, Sadler’s interpretation of Igor Stravinsky and Bronislava Nijinska’s feminist cultural landmark transforms the audience into futuristic voyeurs. Introducing a new matriarchy, evoking Stanley Kubrick-esque style and exploring gender, presentation and fashion, RITUALIA is set to be a thought provoking visual feast. Colette’s creative team includes costume designer Rike Zöllner and dramaturg Assaf Hochman.

THE BERRIES THU 10 MAY - 7.30PM TICKETS: £11, Concessions £8, Students £8, Child £8

From the writer of The Scaffies comes the long-awaited return of The Berries. This hilarious play is set in the summer of 1974 in the berry fields of Kirriemuir and takes a nostalgic trip ‘doon memory dreel’ as we follow four ‘nabblers’ from the Fintry housing scheme during a typical day. Bouts of wild banter, topical and political debate are mixed with hopes and dreams to make sure the hard graft is forgotten, for the time being at least. Prowling in the background is the rough and temperamental character of Rab the foreman, making sure there is no slacking from the workers. For those who went to the berries, the memories and laughs will come flooding back and for those who didn’t, this play will certainly provide a comical insight into a culture long gone.

ED BYRNE: SPOILER ALERT I originally intended to call the show, “I’ll Millennial You in a Minute”, but my promoter considered the title, “off-puttingly baffling”. That’s my own chainsaw in the photo, by the way. Is life that bad or have we good reason to complain about it? Are we filled with righteous anger at a world gone wrong or are we all just a bunch of whiny little brats? In short, are we spoiled? Come and watch as Byrne takes this question, turns it upside down and shakes it until the funny falls out. Go on, spoil yourself. “Comedy’s Holy Grail. Go See!” Sunday Times Recognized as one of the finest observational comics in the industry, Ed’s television credits are countless (provided you’re really bad at counting); Mock The Week, Have I Got News For You, The Graham Norton Show, Live At The Apollo, The One Show, Comic Relief Bake Off 2015, The World’s Most Dangerous Roads and, most recently, he and Dara O Briain filmed the follow up to their Big Adventure show for BBC2 entitled Dara and Ed’s Road to Mandalay. www.edbyrne.com Twitter @MrEdByrne

SINGIN’ I’M NO A BILLY HE’S A TIM On the day of an Old Firm clash, a Rangers and Celtic fan end up sharing a courtroom cell. Their only hope of escape is betting on the match to pay their fines. While taking turns to watch the game on a TV through their cell door, the pair bicker their way through every entrenched cliché of “Scotland’s shame” from religion to politics and national identity. But aided by their kindly turnkey Harry – whose worries for his sick grandson help put their petty quarrels into perspective – they’re forced to reach a grudging understanding. Des Dillon’s brilliant satire of bigotry in Scotland and its connection with the nation’s two biggest football teams first scored critical acclaim at the Fringe in 2005, and has since been a near-constant fixture in theatres in Scotland.

THE PRINCIPLE OF UNCERTAINTY Dr Laura Bailey knows how to explain to everyone counter-intuitive double slits experiments or the paradox of a cat in a box, being dead and alive at the same time. FISK

BARBARA DICKSON WITH NICK HOLLAND

An international co-production with Teater Katapult in Aarhus, Denmark. In association with Macrobert Arts Centre.

SUPPORT ACT: ANTHONY TONER

Amidst a vast, cascading expanse of ocean, a tiny boat is tossed through rolling waves and thundering storms, a speck amidst the immense turbulent seas. Steadily rowing forward into the nothingness is a fisherman, driven by despair, sailing to nowhere with all his worldly possessions. He looks out as the darkness looms and prepares himself to leap… But before he can jump out, something else jumps in; a mass of colour thrashing about the tiny boat. This uninvited guest has finally broken through the surface to discover what lies above. Fisk is a story of a man and a fish, and the unexpected impact they have upon one another. Weaving together a rich tapestry of puppetry, movement and intricate design, alongside an evocative original soundtrack, the piece draws audiences into an immersive marine world.

As a multi-million selling recording artist with an equally impressive Olivier Award winning acting career, Barbara Dickson OBE has firmly established herself as one of the most enduring and popular artistes in Britain today. In this special acoustic performance Barbara and her pianist Nick Holland explore her catalogue of songs at an intimate level. The pair let the words and melodies take ‘centre stage’ as they perform a wonderful range of material drawing on her folk roots, contemporary greats, and some of her classic hits.

SAT 12 MAY - 7.30PM TICKETS: £25

Examining themes of depression, dependence and desolation, Fisk is an exploration of the lengths we can go to in order to escape from ourselves, yet also finds joy in even the deepest and darkest depths. Recommended for ages 14 and above.

EVE / ADAM DOUBLE BILL Eve

Adam

Eve tells the story of a child raised as a boy, when she knew all along that was wrong. That child grew up to be one of the 10 outstanding women in Scotland in 2017. What does that do to our understanding of what it is to be human in times of revolutionary change? With trans rights again under threat, legendary playwright, performer, father and grandmother Jo Clifford tells a story both gentle and passionate, intimate and political, to remind us that the journey towards our real selves is one we all need to make. Wherever it leads us…

If you are born in a country where being yourself can get you killed, exile is your only choice.

“laced with a spiritual understanding of what it means to transform and transcend the urge within” The Herald “compelling, moving and eye-opening” The Telegraph “a love story of epic proportions” The Wee Review “a tremendously moving experience” The Scotsman

3000 TREES: THE DEATH OF MR WILLIAM MACRAE Andy Paterson’s fringe smash play has gathered a cult following since its first sellout run in 2014. Willie MacRae – anti-nuclear campaigner, SNP politician and successful lawyer. His death prompted speculation that he was murdered by the state. MacRae was found dying in his car on a Highlands road in 1985 with a single gunshot wound to the head, apparently fired from his own gun. Was he under surveillance the day he died and was he killed to protect government interests? Now in its third year of touring, this is a moving and thought-provoking play, offering a reminder of dark political times that resonates today. “Paterson is eminently engaging” The Wee Review “The script is great... Paterson is” compelling’ The Herald Outstanding Show Fringe Review The Mumble The Herald
