WELCOME FROM OUR CHIEF EXECUTIVE
NICK PARR
the whole story of the Company’. It is important that ‘all team members should be able to ‘sell and tell’, display their pride and help create a buzz around everything that the Company does’.
Dundee Rep Theatre is a purpose built award-winning theatre in the cultural quarter of Dundee. It comprises a 455 seat auditorium, three rehearsal studios and a four-time award-winning bar and brasserie. Welcome to our first annual review. I make no apology for ‘showing off’ our Company like a proud parent! Since arriving in Dundee in 2015, too many times have I heard ‘I didn’t know you did that’, when I tell someone about creative learning, international touring or our unique ensembles. One of our new strategic objectives is that ‘everyone will know how to share
And it is equally important to ensure that our external communication is getting across the same message. Innovating, pioneering and leading with passion and enthusiasm are aspirations for us over the coming years. Our new mission – Create Together, Discover Together is our mantra for the future. ‘Together’ emphasises the role of the ensemble model we uniquely host in both dance and theatre. ‘Create’ is what we’re all about. And ‘Discover’ not only places us at the heart of our City, but also charts our journey. Our unique two ensemble model, developed over the past two decades is a beacon of quality that we are lucky to have in Dundee (and Scotland). No other single organisation can boast permanent ensembles of dancers and actors and it is vital that our immensely
supportive funders continue to work with us to preserve our wonderfully creative company. 2015/16 was the first year of our new three-year Regular Funding from Creative Scotland and with Dundee City Council also supporting us so generously, I want to thank both our main funders for the invaluable contribution they make to the cultural life of our city and region. The quality of our work on stage, in the rehearsal room, in the studio and in classrooms across the City (and beyond) is second to none. Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre Limited has a well deserved reputation for excellence in everything we do – and that’s not going to change under my watch. Moving forward, our work will be unmissable. We will be forward-thinking, pioneering and bold. Our teams will work together to be brave, collaborative and will be empowered to take risks. Our audience will be worldwide as we bring the world to Dundee and take Dundee to the world.
A WORD FROM OUR CHAIR
PETER INGLIS
Dundee Rep Theatre has been around since 1939 and, as such, is a constant in the cultural make-up of the City. That’s not to say that we sit our laurels; we never lose sight of our aims and ambitions, always maintaining our key strengths of teamwork and professionalism.
I have lived and worked in Dundee for many years and I can safely say that it is an exceptionally exciting place to be at the moment. There is a great vitality and buzz around the city, due in part to the eagerly anticipated arrival of the new V&A Museum of Design, Dundee, which will ultimately impact upon all who live here.
I am very proud of the work Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre Limited has done in leading the way in diversity and inclusion, as was demonstrated by last year’s production of Lorca’s Blood Wedding, putting a cast of Deaf and disabled actors centre stage. As part of this project the Rep invested £12,000 to improve access to the building.
Creative Learning is also a source of great pride, as it continues to engage with members across the breadth of the community. The aforementioned are just a tiny example of what makes Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre great. The programme for 2017 is shaping up, and it will be yet another busy and remarkable 12 months, as we continue to make theatre and dance more accessible to the population as a whole. We also are very much looking forward to welcoming the Rep’s new Artistic Director Andrew Panton who will take up post in Spring 2017.

DUNDEE REP CREATIVE LEARNING The Rep’s Creative Learning programme is designed to enrich the lives of local people through the highest quality of artistic engagement and seeks to engage with those who face barriers to participation because of social, financial and/or health inequality. Dramatherapy
Youth Theatre
Dundee Rep Theatre’s Dramatherapy service is the only permanent resource of it’s kind in a UK theatre. The Rep’s dramatherapy service continues to offer support to members of the community who experience social, emotional and mental health difficulties. The adult service, funded by Dundee City Council and NHS Tayside, is now in its twenty first year. The service is at full capacity and works with an average of 25-30 adults aged 18-65 per year, who may participate in one of the two ongoing groups, or in individual dramatherapy sessions. Thanks to Comic Relief, the young person’s Dramatherapy service now has funding for a further three years. In October 2015, the service was invited to deliver a presentation on dramatherapy to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, during their visit to Dundee and the Rep.
In June 2015 we presented a double bill of performances from Dundee Rep Youth Theatre. The 14-16s youth theatre performed Discontented Winter: House Remix by Bryony Lavery and the 16-18s youth theatre performed David Almond’s Skellig. Each performance was supported by our technical team and all set, costume and lighting design was created by our in house creative team. These performances were great examples of the exciting and dynamic work the young theatre makers at Dundee Rep are capable of.

Great Big Dance Show
25/01/2017 10:12
Scottish Dance Theatre Creative Learning aims to develop audiences, engage with communities and foster future talent. At home and on tour, our finely tuned group of freelance dance artists based in Dundee together with our professional dancers connect with participants through productions and immersive participatory experiences. A particular highlight of our new engagement activity took place in June 2015 at Rachel House Children’s Hospice. Our dancers made and performed a short work for residents and their families, and then led one-toone dances with the young people. The team continues to manage Dundee Dance Partnership’s Dundee Young Artists Project (awarded £160,000 from Creative Scotland’s Cashback for Creativity fund) offering 4,700 Dundee-based young people, both with and without disabilities, a programme of opportunity to engage with high quality dance, visual art and theatre. Our Youth Dance Company performed new work by former Company dancers Giulia Montalbano and Steven Martin at Y Dance Destinations (Macrobert, Stirling), Go Dance (Theatre Royal) and our own Great Big Dance Show.

EQUALITIES, DIVERSITY, INCLUSION Relaxed performance and drama groups Families with children with additional support needs can feel isolated and rarely can enjoy time out together as a whole family. Children attending a relaxed performance enjoy an afternoon or evening with their family in an inclusive environment which is suited to their needs and best interests. Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre Limited works very closely with other outside agencies in education, health and voluntary organisations, and the staff in Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre Limited are all trained in supporting and encouraging the children and families who attend Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre. Children with disabilities are vulnerable and may need specific support - many do not attend groups outside school because of this. Attending groups for children with additional support needs can help the child make friends, which is something these children can find difficult. These friendships can go on for life as the parents who attend with the children also make friends having something in common. Without relaxed performances and drama groups run by the Rep, families would find attending the theatre more difficult.

DUNDEE REP FUTURE PLANS In 2015 we introduced the first of our themed seasons with the Revenge Season. Three very different plays, bound together by the common thread of Revenge, with Blood Wedding, Titus Andronicus and Great Expectations. Building on the success of the 2015 Revenge Season we went on to present a second themed season in the Spring of 2016, this time the theme of Love, featuring Little Red and the Wolf by Scott Gilmour and Claire McKenzie - a co-production with Noisemaker, Love Song by John Kolvenbach and Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare. The Rep’s seventh community tour was Spoiling, by John McCann, and topping it off this Christmas is George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl, adapted by Stuart Paterson. Creative Learning will continue to develop a rich programme of events and activities, including an exciting new youth theatre, Young Illuminate, for children and young people with learning disabilities. In January we will launch GIFT, our brand new performance project for Primary Schools which will see teachers and pupils devising original performances for our main stage.

Future for Equalities, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) We are pleased to announce our success in gaining a Time to Shine Intern at Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre, whose primary role will be to conduct research into and report on all aspects of our EDI. It is an internship programme established by The Rank Foundation and operates as a Living Wage paid position in a meaningful work role. This internship is twofold: to address organisational development gaps/ requirements within the charity, and to enable a person with the right skills mix, talent and work ethic.

SCOTTISH DANCE THEATRE FUTURE PLANS Scottish Dance Theatre Scottish Dance Theatre turned 30 in 2016, and toured the Double Bill - Dreamers and Process Day to MODAFE Festival in Seoul, Korea; YAMA to Sibiu International Theatre Festival and December Dance Festival in Bruges and also toured both works throughout the UK. Miann toured to Brazil as part of the Cultural Olympiad at the Paralympics and the Creative Learning team led intensive projects in both Rio Di Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Following previews in Dundee in July, the World Premiere of Velvet Petal took place in Mexico City and at the Cervantino Festival in October. Birthday celebrations continued in Dundee in September with an evening of work presented by 140 dancers from across Scotland and the debut of TIM (This Is Me), created by a cast of young women and directed by Dawn Hartley, Head of Creative Learning.
Children’s Dance classes
A showcase birthday party celebrated our journey so far and included the debut theatre performance of a group of vulnerable young dancers from Dundee Young Artists, a Cashback for Creativity project. TIM headed to Tramway as part of National Theatre of Scotland’s international Home Away Festival in October. Rounding off the Creative Learning calendar, the children’s classes led an audience through McManus Gallery and Museum with their own choreographies inspired by the artworks. We now look to the future with the launch of Whitfield Youth Dance Company, our birthday legacy, and a collaborative youth performance project with Rep Creative Learning and Verdant Works, continuing to connect our work to Dundee’s communities.
