WELCOME NICK PARR CHIEF EXECUTIVE Over the 2016/2017 year, the company has continued to evolve as we build on the success of the past, looking to an even brighter future for our unique organisation. Early in 2018 we will hear the outcome of our regular funding application to Creative Scotland. As we work through the final year of the current three year funding agreement, there is tension across the culture sector as to what the next three years will look like. Part of the future vision for Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre Limited is a more sustainable model that allows our artists to create and discover together in a safe and supportive environment. Our main funders are Creative Scotland and Dundee City Council – and we thank them both for their commitment to culture and creativity in the city. Alongside this support, local and national trusts and foundations have increased their contributions to the company and this is an area that we plan to grow over the coming years. But of course, it should never be all about the money. Our creativity must shine through and our plans for the next few years are amongst the best in the land! In partnership with Stellar Quines and the Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh, Fleur Darkin, Artistic Director of Scottish Dance Theatre and our dancers will create The Lover at the Lyceum in January. At home, our new Artistic Director of the Rep, Andrew Panton opens his first season for the theatre with Tracy Letts’ award-winning play August: Osage County, featuring a large Ensemble, with many familiar faces. We’re delighted to be welcoming choreographer Colette Sadler, who will create a new work on our dancers in 2018. Also joining us are our new Artistic Associates, EJ Boyle (Movement), Claire McKenzie (Music/Singing) and Jean Sangster (Voice) who will work with the Ensemble regularly throughout the year. Finally, I am particularly pleased to welcome Dundee Fringe promoter Sweet Venues who will present a series of cabaret events in the theatre’s restaurant – Sweet Venues Lates at the Rep. This is part of our vision for an even livelier building, day and night. Our aim is to make work that is unmissable. And that’s exactly what we’re doing.

DUNDEE REP AND SCOTTISH DANCE THEATRE ANNUAL REVIEW

PETER INGLIS CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre Limited is a prestigious force for creativity in the Scottish creative landscape and beyond. From our base here in Dundee city centre we reach out to the extremities of our city, its hinterland, Scotland, the UK and the world at large, with award winning productions and events, creating hope and inspiration as well as pleasure for young and old. 2016/2017 has been another expansive year for us. Our dancers performed in Brazil and Mexico as well as Europe and the UK. The inspired commissioning of Botis Seva produced the visually stunning TuTuMucky. As for the Rep Ensemble, we took John McGrath’s The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil around Scotland to packed houses and at home, the season came to a dramatic climax with the multi award winning production of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. The unique feature of our two artistic companies rubbing shoulders in the Rep building is the jewel in our crown. The arrival of Andrew Panton as the new Artistic Director of the theatre will only add lustre, while at the same time acknowledging the fantastic contribution that Joe Douglas made prior to Andrew’s arrival. Our creative learning team is one of Scotland’s largest, connecting with over 27,000 participants of all ages and for me, watching the young children perform as part of the Inspire programme and seeing the selfconfidence that it engenders, is always inspiring! Teamwork is a feature of how we work here at the Rep; we are greater together and we should continue to focus on collaboration and cooperation as an essential part of the art-making process. Finally, we are constantly seeking ways to improve the visitor experience for you, our public.

WHO WE ARE Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre sit at the cultural heart of Scotland and the City of Dundee. Founded in 1939, the Rep building is a centre of creative energy, a space for engagement with a wide range of art forms, while also playing a lead role in arts education and engagement across the city and beyond. Proud of its Scottish roots, the Company looks outwards, producing dance and theatre of national and international significance, for and with a diverse audience.

Sited in a purpose-built art space, Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre create and deliver work for a local audience, as well as on a national and international scale.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES

The model is unique. Two creative forces share a home and a legal structure. Having a permanent acting ensemble is rare (unique in Scotland), but combined with a dance company and extensive creative learning, it makes the Rep building one of a kind and a hub of creative energy.

Our work should be unmissable, forward-thinking, pioneering and bold; our teams should work together to be brave, collaborative and empowered to take risks. We must strive for a big, worldwide audience, inspired by our location and history – we will bring the world to Dundee and take Dundee to the world.

At the heart of the Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre vision is the belief that artistic and creative experience of the highest quality should be open and available to all. Two ‘companies’ exist within one legal structure, governed by one Board of Directors with a breadth of skills and professional interests. Since 1999 Dundee Rep Ensemble has been Scotland’s only permanent company of full-time actors has created award-winning productions, establishing a reputation as one of the UK’s foremost theatre companies.

Ambitious Programme

Alongside both companies’ work is an extensive programme of Creative Learning opportunities which engage communities and schools on a local and national scale.

Mission Create Together, Discover Together

Vision Unmissable experiences for the curious. Together, we engage, support and dare to take risks.

Values Our staff team and Directors share an agreed set of values and work to a code of conduct.

Scotland’s principal contemporary dance company, Scottish Dance Theatre, was established at the Rep in 1986 and is a valued research engine for dance. Pioneering new ways to create and distribute work across all scales, the company commissions preeminent artists in many fields whose practice is outstanding and assured in its relationship with the audience.

Confidence to Lead As we build our profile through communications inside and outside the organisation, we will strive to give everyone the freedom to innovate, to be a pioneer and to lead with passion and enthusiasm.

Investment We will invest in our art, our people, our audience, our resources, our capacity.

Breaking Down Barriers We will continue to diversify our Company (our audience, our participants, our performers, our Directors and other team members). Our Values and our Code of Conduct will inform the customer experience – ensuring all of our values are at the core of what we do.

Miann toured sell out performances in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil in September 2016. A highly successful technical theatre training scheme for Scottish and Brazilian students, supported by British Council Cultural Skills was piloted, which we are now developing as part of our future offer in international touring. Alongside UK touring, additional international touring took place in South Korea, Romania, Belgium, Hungary and Serbia. Scottish Dance Theatre celebrated our 30th birthday in September 2016 with an evening of work created by members of the local community and our dancers; a showcase birthday gala to celebrate our journey so far and the launch of the Whitfield Youth Dance Company (now known as DD4).

SCOTTISH DANCE THEATRE CREATIVE LEARNING

Scottish Dance Theatre Creative Learning continues to develop audiences, engage with communities and foster future talent through productions and immersive participatory experiences.

In Rio de Janeiro, the Creative Learning Team worked with Nucleo Dos in Centro Des Artes, Mare and returned to share the learning with DD4, the new youth dance company based in Whitfield. Contributing to the celebrations marking the company’s 30th Birthday, participants performed in special one off events The Great Big Birthday Show – which included the premiere of TIM (This Is Me) devised by the young cast - and the Birthday Gala. TIM (This Is Me) was then performed at Tramway at National Theatre of Scotland’s Home Away Festival in Glasgow where the cast also led and took part in workshops with international groups. Thanks to funding DD4 the new youth dance company by Scottish Dance Theatre for young people in the Whitfield and Fintry area, is up and running (and jumping and turning)!

SCOTTISH DANCE THEATRE PARTICIPANTS 7,103

Led by dancers, Giulia and Oleg, participants take part in weekly sessions in Breakin’ and Contemporary Dance, fusing the styles and adding dance theatre to make new work. We want to encourage young people to become Dance Leaders and give back to their communities. We are grateful for the support of the People’s Postcode Trust, Northwood Charitable Trust and the Nine Trades of Dundee for helping us launch this inspiring new youth dance project in 2016/17. Dundee Dance Partnership’s Dundee Young Artists Project (funded by Cashback for Creativity) was completed and three groups of young people with and without disabilities are now continuing regular dance activities through the new Outreach Dance programme. In February, the Young Company performed a new work by Steven Martin as a curtain raiser to Scottish Dance Theatre’s premiere of Dreamers and TuTuMucky at Dundee Rep.

In January we will stage our first commission with the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh in co-production with Stellar Quines. Fleur Darkin and Jemima Levick will adapt and co-direct The Lover, based on the novel by Marguerite Duras, which will have an initial three week run in Edinburgh before coming to Dundee in its onward touring.

In February, the full company of dancers and apprentices will premier a daring new work by Scottish Choreographer Colette Sadler, a visionary feminist remake of the ballet Les Noces, premiering at Dundee Rep.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAID Little Red and the Wolf

Much Ado About Nothing

George’s Marvellous Medicine

“Beautifully presented by a sevenstrong cast from the Dundee Rep ensemble, who play out the drama as if they had been born to pass on the story of Little Red and her fighting Grandma – superbly played by Marli Siu and Ann Louise Ross.” ★★★★ Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman

“This production plays it for laughs – and they are plentiful, thanks to a sterling performance by Robert Jack as the reluctant suitor Benedick. His performance is a lesson in how to react – his face and body eloquent, his squirming done with subtlety and great comic timing.” ★★★★ Peter Cargill, The Stage

“Wonderful acting, not least from the astonishing Ann Louise Ross.” Joyce McMillan, The Scotman

Love Song

The Cheviot, The Stag and the Black, Black Oil

“From the staging to the sensitive performances that show personal and family life, Panton captured intimacy beautifully and in a way I could have never imagined. But most importantly, both Panton and Kolvenbach reminded you about one key thing about life- don’t forget to live.” Ewan Gray, DURA

“As a history of social cleansing and political racketeering is laid bare through songs and stories, the show’s contemporary currency is astonishing, with the role-call of mercilessly lampooned toffs, grotesque hoteliers and developers, political yes-men and predatory oil men instantly recognisable archetypes.” Neil Cooper, The Herald

Death Of A Salesman “As Billy Mack makes clear, in his brilliant and heartbreaking central performance, the tragedy of Miller’s hero Willy Loman is that he believes in the American Dream of success through hard work, enterprise and charm, and in all the ideas about masculinity and fatherhood that come with it.” ★★★★★ Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman

COMMUNITY, HEALTH & WELLBEING Community & Wellbeing During the year, our company for older actors, The Beautiful People received an invitation to Holyrood as part of Luminate Scotland’s creative ageing festival. This was a precursor to the company’s visit to rural Sutherland to create ‘a ceilidh play in a day’ inspired by The Cheviot, Stag and the Black, Black Oil, while the Rep Ensemble appeared in Inverness. Our well-being programme continued to develop with the addition of Young Illuminate for young people with additional support needs and the appointment a new Dramatherapist to lead on our successful Comic Relief bid to deliver dramatherapy for young people aged 11 to 25.

Dramatherapy Dramatherapy is a creative form of psychotherapy that uses aspects and processes of theatre, play and other art forms to support members of the community who experience social, emotional and mental health difficulties. It is a therapy that facilitates creativity, personal growth, insight and positive change. Dramatherapists are regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). This means that they are required to meet national standards for their training, professional skills and behaviour. It also means that the public is protected should any professional fail to meet these standards. Dundee Rep continues to run two free services for adults and young people living in the Dundee community who are experiencing mental health difficulties and life challenges. Dundee Rep is the only theatre in the UK that has an in-house therapy service. The adult service, funded by Dundee City Council and NHS Tayside, and the young persons’ service, funded by Comic Relief, follow a full referral and assessment system and they offer both group and individual sessions.

EDUCATION Creative Pathways Our Creative Pathways programme includes a broad range of routes into the work of the organisation for pupils, students, graduates and volunteers, with opportunities throughout the year. One of our most recent developments is extended placements – bespoke work experience for young people who show particular promise for a focused area. This year one of our extended placements was offered to 17-19s youth theatre participant Erasmus Mackenna, focusing on the area of directing. Erasmus started his directing placement in August 2016 and over the next few months had the opportunity to shadow Associate Artistic Director Joe Douglas in rehearsals for The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil, Spoiling, George’s Marvellous Medicine, Death of a Salesman, and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. We are very proud to say that after the summer, Erasmus will begin a 4-year Directing course in Amsterdam.

Next Up In March 2017 the Rep launched Next Up a festival celebrating young theatre makers in Scotland, specifically the North East. The festival focused on devised theatre with each group creating an original performance from the shared stimulus of ‘The American Dream’ inspired by our spring production of Death of a Salesman. A mixture of school groups and local youth theatres performed over the festival weekend alongside an exciting festival programme of workshops delivered by guest theatre practitioners including Scott Gilmour and Lewis Hetherington.

NEXT UP STATS 14 WORKSHOPS/VISITS TO PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS/YOUTH THEATRES 7 WORKSHOPS FROM VISITING THEATRE ARTISTS 9 PERFORMANCES OVER THREE EVENINGS

Enterprise 2016 supported 60 young people from across Dundee’s secondary schools to take over the Rep and work on our Christmas show George’s Marvellous Medicine. The participants work across all departments for two days and the event culminates in a showcase of their work.

PARTICIPATION Experiment01: Abandoned In June 2016 our 14-16s and 1719s youth theatre performed Experiment01:Abandoned an exciting site-specific performance that was completely devised by the company with original live music throughout. The performance was created, devised and written by the company in a ten month process that included research & development at Mills Observatory, where the performance took place. Experiment01: Abandoned was performed eight times to sell out audiences.

FUTURE PLANS

DUNDEE REP AND SCOTTISH DANCE THEATRE ANNUAL REVIEW

Dundee Rep Ensemble under the direction of the Rep’s new Artistic Director, Andrew Panton, launched an ambitious 17/18 Season in May with a fully immersive launch event. Guests were given the opportunity to experience trailers for the season in a promenade event using the entire backstage, front of house and outside spaces. As first production in the new season, the 2008 Pulitzer Prize-winning August: Osage County will receive its Scottish premiere under Panton’s direction. This ensemble piece originated at Steppenwolf in Chicago and we are celebrating the ten-year anniversary with this new production designed by Alex Lowde. Jean Genet’s iconic existential thriller The Maids, directed by Eve Jamieson will feature the Ensemble in this newly imagined version. A Christmas Carol will be our seasonal offering in a lavish production with new music by awardwinning composer Claire McKenzie. Johnny McKnight will make his Rep directorial debut with Ira Levin’s Deathtrap, which holds the record as the longest running thriller in Broadway history. We’ll be breaking new ground with a unique co-production with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland when we present the multi Tony, Olivier and Grammy award-winning Spring Awakening in Glasgow and at the Rep. The finest emergent talent in the country on stage with members of the Rep Ensemble. Stephen Greenhorn’s much-loved road movie for the stage, Passing Places, is next on stage at the Rep and we then embark on The 39 Steps as our community tour, directed by the Ensemble’s very own Irene Macdougall.

A SUSTAINABLE BUILDING

Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre staff

Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre Limited believes that everyone has a responsibility to take care of the environment in which we operate. We are fully committed to improving our environmental performance across all our business activities and have made significant improvements this year:

Members of staff and customers of the theatre have been involved in projects to help the sustainability of the building and our work. We have improved the environment within and around the theatre with projects such as planting, encouraging wildlife and litter picking to help make Tay Square an oasis in the heart of the city. We continue to recycle within the building, and have improved the number of items we split and recycle. Making use of LED lighting and managing electrical use has allowed a significant decrease in our electricity consumption, and we have switched to 100% renewable sources for electricity. We have also controlled our gas usage closely with improved facilities scheduling and housekeeping. We set ourselves an ambitious target for reducing CO2 emissions, and beat that target with final savings of over 35,000kg of CO2. Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre was proud to achieve its first Green Tourism Award, gaining Silver standard.

DUNDEE REP AND SCOTTISH DANCE THEATRE ANNUAL REVIEW

The Rep Restaurant and CafeBar continue to serve fresh seasonal food with a focus on local ingredients and products where possible and all profit from the operation goes towards the work of Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre. In the next year, we are refurbishing a number of our dressing rooms and green room, our main front-of-house lift and replacing our water tank. We want to ensure that the Rep’s building continues to be the best possible home for a centre of creative energy; a space for engagement with a wide range of art forms and would like to thank Foyle Foundation and Backstage Trust for supporting this ambition.

EQUALITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION The past year and heading into 2017 has been focused on research: how we can maximise our offer to as wide an audience as possible, to our employees and to visiting staff and artists. We want to make our approach to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) sustainable and embedded across the organisation, as well as being an example to other theatres and arts venues in Scotland of best practice. Examples of this would be our appointment of a Time to Shine Intern and the supporting of Simone Toji’s PhD research project: ‘Asking the right questions – how arts organisations must take a more imaginative approach to cultural diversity by firstly asking the right questions’, which looked at the barriers faced by minority ethnic audiences in the city and how we can improve our offering to them. This research all contributes towards our goals to diversify our staff, our audiences and our performers, using diverse experiences to enrich our visitors’ time at Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre.

Time to Shine Intern

Accessible Performances

Led by The Old Vic, Parents in Performing Arts (PIPA) is representative of a major new commitment to attract, support and retain a more diverse flexible workforce. Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre support PIPA’s endeavours to bring about sustainable change in attitudes and practices towards those with caring responsibilities. Dundee Rep is currently in the second phase of the research project, which will see the organisation trialling solutions to some of the challenges highlighted by the research findings, some of which include enhanced maternity provision, developing the role of the ‘PIPA Champion’ and revising our employee handbook and welcome pack to make clear that the support measures offered are communicated clearly to all employees.

Since January 2016 we have had a Rank funded intern in post, researching and reporting on our EDI, and exploring ways that we can embed a culture of shared responsibility for EDI across the organisation. This work has involved reaching out to other arts venues and organisations across Scotland, fed into our funding application and a robust EDI Action Plan to take us to 2021, and helped inform our audience development plans. Other research has included looking into effective ways of using audience feedback, engaging with more diverse groups and providing educational resources for all staff.

We have continued to present British Sign Language interpretation, Audio Description and Captioned performances on all of our Ensemble shows, alongside Relaxed Performances and Parents in Performing Arts performances. (these are performances timed to make it easier for parents and carers to attend).

The post is funded by the Rank Foundation as part of their Time to Shine programme, enabling a person with the right skills mix, talent and work ethic to work in a Living Wage paid position that will meaningfully impact the organisation and address requirements within the charity.

WITH THANKS TO:

At the heart of the Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre’s vision is the belief that artistic and creative experience should be open and available to all. The theatre seeks to share a diverse programme of theatre and dance across Dundee and beyond by taking its work out of the theatre and into the wider geographical and cultural communities.

Although we receive core funding from Creative Scotland and Dundee City Council, we still need to raise over ÂŁ250,000 per year to sustain the scope and reach of our groundbreaking work. Donations, Friends membership and corporate sponsorship help us share the life-changing experience of professional theatre and dance with people of all ages and abilities. We rely on support from trusts and foundations to deliver our creative learning programmes in the community, as well as for key building maintenance and upgrades, and to develop new work. Our Friends and supporters play a starring role in the work of the theatre, both by supporting new productions and our talented apprentice dancers

and actors, as well as our community learning programme. We want everyone to enjoy the benefits of drama and dance, and support also helps us expand our offering to lowincome groups, school children and young people who may have had no previous experience in the arts.

Two SCIOs act as fundraising platforms for the two creative strands within the organisation. Scottish Dance Theatre Foundation (Charity Number SC046515) and Dundee Rep Theatre Foundation (Charity Number SC046517) have all directors in common with the main charity.

The financial year 2016/2017 was the second year of Regular Funding from Creative Scotland.
