Great Expectations, June 2015
Welcome to Dundee Rep’s
Dundee Rep Ensemble is proud and excited to present a season of work all linked by a common theme – Revenge! A new version of the great Spanish classic Blood Wedding by Lorca... Shakespeare’s thrilling early tragedy Titus Andronicus... And a dramatisation of the classic Great Expectations by Charles Dickens – three very different plays, but bound together by the common thread of Revenge, that most powerful but also most destructive of emotions, which has inspired some of the greatest writing for the theatre. We hope that all of you will be gripped and inspired by these great stories and come and explore the intriguing links between the plays — and the way in which our award-winning Ensemble of actors delve deeper into the different worlds of these thrillers… See pages 5, 9 and 13 for details on how to save money on a combined ticket. But of course this wonderful Spring Season contains a feast of variety for all tastes and audiences from a beautifully diverse range of visiting companies — and it is irresistible to point out two shows with an important local
connection: Mother of All the Peoples, which celebrates the life of unsung heroine (and daughter of Dundee) Mary Slessor. And watch out for the triumphant return of local playwright Gary Robertson with The Scaffies in which Gary does for binmen what his famous The Berries did for the berry-pickers! Scottish Dance Theatre are busier than ever, with revivals of recent glories Yama by Damien Jalet, now in a full-length version, Winter, Again by Jo Strømgren, the mesmerising Miann by Scottish Dance Theatre’s own artistic director Fleur Darkin, and the much-awaited premiere of Dreamers by Anton Lachky. Rep Creative Learning works with an average of 27,000 people every year and go from strength to strength. Highlights of the season include Masked Ball... a Cabaret of Disguise by our Illuminate Ensemble, Whitfield Giants — a culmination of the brilliant city-wide ASPIRE project, and a celebration evening for the mammoth Royal Shakespeare Company’s Open Stages project, which has worked with Shakespeare’s plays across seven amateur companies throughout Scotland.
