REP DISCOVERY DEAL
Welcome to our 2018/19 Season here at Dundee Rep.
Our Discovery Deal gives you the chance to try something new with access to the best available seats. The more you see, the more you save.
What an amazing time to be in Dundee during this exciting time for our city. Over the past year, it’s been a privilege to work with the talented, dedicated and inspiring team here. So what can you expect from the coming season? Dundee Rep Ensemble will revive two important Scottish plays. Firstly, a new production of Anne Downie’s much loved The Yellow on the Broom, based on Betsy Whyte’s autobiographical novel depicting the stories of the travelling people of the North East of Scotland. Following that, we have Gregory Burke’s classic Gagarin Way, which is set in Fife and was a breakthrough play for the renowned Scottish playwright of Black Watch. Over the festive period we will be launching a brand new adaptation of The Snow Queen in an exciting production written by Noisemaker’s Scott Gilmour and Claire McKenzie. In the New Year we present the American classic All My Sons directed by a familiar face here at the Rep - Stellar Quines’ Artistic Director, Jemima Levick. We finish the season by presenting a festival of new work from emergent and established artists – Rep Stripped – before hitting the road with our annual tour to community centres in Dundee and surrounding areas. In addition to the productions from our award-winning resident Ensemble, we have a diverse body of visiting work playing in a variety of different spaces this season. Also, Scottish Dance Theatre returns with three stunning pieces from their repertoire and we are delighted to welcome The Citizens Theatre with The Macbeths. With a fresh new look and new name, REP Engage (previously known as Rep Creative Learning) will be presenting an exciting five-week season of productions and engagement opportunities. Kicking off with our Young Company’s devised piece, San Marino, 1972 which will transfer to Eden Court in July as part of National Theatre of Scotland’s Exchange, and finishing with a week-long theatre-making residency at the University of Dundee’s School of Life Sciences, it promises to be a fantastic five weeks for REP Engage both here at Dundee Rep and beyond. We look forward to seeing you soon at the Rep,
Andrew Panton Artistic Director / Joint-Chief Executive

Dundee Rep Ensemble presents
“I’ll tak’ ye on the road again, when yellow’s on the broom.”
THE YELLOW ON THE BROOM
Adapted from Betsy Whyte’s beloved autobiography, The Yellow on the Broom is a heartfelt, funny, and rich account of human endeavour. Filled with music, song, and an array of vibrant characters, Bessie’s story both passionately tells of her life and vividly portrays the prejudice faced by Travellers. In 1930s Perthshire, Bessie Townsley is growing up in the Travelling community. Her mother and father teach her the ways of the land, but their lifestyle is under threat. With winter approaching, the family settle in Brechin for the season. There, Bessie must attend 100 days of compulsory schooling and although she shows promise in the classroom, the travelling life she adores is viciously attacked by those around her. Directed by Andrew Panton (Passing Places, August: Osage County, Love Song), The Yellow on the Broom kick-starts his second season as Dundee Rep’s Artistic Director. Join us after the show each Friday evening for a series of events which aim to shine a spotlight on Traveller culture, tradition and contemporary issues. See website for further details.

GAGARIN WAY
“I’ve always been interested in violence ... I thought I should, ken, maybe try something way a point ... violence way a reason.” It’s late, and in a dark computer factory, disillusioned workers Eddie and Gary have a plan to make the ultimate political statement: kidnap a member of senior management, and send a message to the world. Their plot starts to unravel when security guard Tom stumbles in on them. Worse still, the kidnapping hasn’t quite gone to plan. In the towns built on former industries, what’s left for the new generation? The mines have closed; capitalism reigns supreme. Set in Fife, Gagarin Way addresses the departure of socialist values from a region where political radicalism was once the cornerstone of the community. Written by Gregory Burke (Black Watch) and directed by Cora Bissett (Room, Glasgow Girls, Adam), Gagarin Way offers a stark insight into the harshest realities of Scottish society, tempered with fiery black humour.

Vanishing Point and A New International presents
HI, MY NAME IS BEN
THE DARK CARNIVAL
“Hi, my name is Ben. I can’t talk but I can hear”
A co-production with Citizens Theatre in association with Dundee Rep Ensemble.
The true story of one ordinary old man and his extraordinary life. From his tiny, single-room on East 74th Street in New York City, Bernhardt Wichmann III spoke to and changed the lives of those around him; reconnecting his neighbours to values of friendship, humanity and happiness. And he did all this without speaking. Ben was a mute. His life is a story of how one man endured tragedy, illness, success and defeat, before finally encountering a miracle.
“Who’d have thought, that when we died, we didn’t die completely? Our Consciousness goes on a bit. It lingers on, discreetly.”
Hi, My Name is Ben is a new musical by award-winning writing partnership Noisemaker (Scott Gilmour & Claire McKenzie) currently in development with Goodspeed Musicals, Connecticut and Dundee Rep. In collaboration with Scottish Ensemble we are delighted to invite you to this concert performance early in the show’s development.
The Dark Carnival tells the story - through anarchic song, raucous rhyme and gorgeous visual images – of the dead beneath the earth who, upon dying, discover that death is not actually the end. Incredulous at their continuity, they form their own necropolitan community, looking with sympathy and scorn upon the unsuspecting living, who naively tend to the graves above. But something is afoot. God has put heaven up for rent. The angels, at a loss, sit on cotton wool clouds, drinking cans of Tennent’s. When news reaches the cemetery, an underground revolution begins, led by the stoic Mrs Mark and her band of necropolitans. The Dark Carnival is a new pop-opera created by Vanishing Point featuring live music and songs by A New International.

SAN MARINO, 1972 “Go on have a drink, pose for me, I like your collar, what kind of plane is that, it’s windy; let’s take one of all of us. Together now with us in it, all of us. Take a photo” Upstairs in the corner of the attic, in the far corner was a dusty box. Inside that box lay the half-forgotten memories of a family. Holiday snaps, smiling faces, souvenirs and sunshine. Until it happened. In this performance Dundee Rep Young Company attempt to bring the skeleton in the closet to life, to tell the secrets behind the pictures. To speculate about what happened in the market; to re-create what happened on the balcony; to re-imagine what happened in front of the mountain that day in San Marino, 1972. A story of coincidences, accidents, truths, half-truths and lies. Exchange 2018 San Marino, 1972 has been created as part of National Theatre of Scotland’s Exchange project for 16-25 yearolds which supports those devising and creating the next generation of theatre. This production is one of 10 new productions being created by 10 young companies from the UK and beyond which will go on to the Exchange Festival, a week-long celebration of performance and creative learning, at Eden Court, Inverness in July. Dundee Rep Young Company Our current company members have been meeting as a group for almost a year now. We love working together to explore ensemble driven theatre which is visually exciting and inventive in nature. We are curious about the world and enjoy exploring processes that allows us to investigate these curiosities.

At the heart of Shakespeare’s darkest play is a disintegrating marriage. This new adaptation using a radically cut version of the text focuses on the relationship between one of the most famous killers in literature and his ambitious wife. Returning from battle, Macbeth hears a prophesy emboldening him to murder and betray. Compelled by his equally ruthless wife, Macbeth ignores his creeping sense of guilt and hopelessness and attempts to hasten the hand of fate, unwittingly ushering in the downfall of them both.
One, a notorious Black Panther Assata Shakur; the other, Ambrosia a presentday university student enrolling as the 2014 Ferguson riots begin. Both challenge the American justice system, become criminalised through political activism, and ultimately are faced with the same choice: stay and fight, or flee?
First performed at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow in 2017, the Citizens’ Artistic Director Dominic Hill’s brutal and intense production tells the Bard’s famous story in a powerfully concentrated 70 minutes.

REP RESTAURANT Dundee Rep aims to make our performances accessible to everyone. See the programme pages for dates when the services listed below are being provided. Relaxed Performances are designed to provide a relaxed attitude to noise; movement and small changes are made to the lighting and sound levels in the show. They are specifically designed to welcome people with a learning disability, Down’s Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Condition or sensory and communication disorders. Audio Described Performances include a form of audio-visual translation. Through a headset (collected on arrival) a describer will tell you about the performance. Touch Tours usually take place before the audio described performance and provide an opportunity for blind and partially sighted patrons to explore the set, props and costumes before the show. BSL Interpreted Performances include an interpretation of spoken or sung speech, usually from one side of the stage. Captioned Performances are similar to television subtitling and shown on display units on or by the stage. Please let us know if you have any specific access requirements or questions about your visit and mention the services you wish to use when you book your tickets. This allows us to be aware of your requirements, booking any equipment for your use, and arranging your seats to be in the best position in the auditorium.
