Letter
from the President
A big part of Dunwoody’s future is the renovation of the campus to accommodate the School of Engineering, improve the spaces used to teach and learn, and provide areas for students to work, present projects, and collaborate. Our goal is to create a campus environment that is commensurate with Dunwoody’s reputation and legacy. The initial work is exciting. The possibilities are breathtaking. Completion of these much needed renovations won’t be cheap and we are currently working to raise the more than $19 million needed. We will keep you up-to-date on our fundraising progress. A Year of Accomplishments: • We received approval from the Minnesota Office of Higher Education and The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association to offer a new Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree. This is the first step in our plans to launch the new School of Engineering. We are currently accepting students into the program and will start our first class in the Fall of 2016. • We completed the first phase towards professional accreditation of our Bachelor of Architecture completion program, making us one of just a few colleges in the nation that allows students with two-year architectural degrees to transfer into year three of a professional degree program. • We invested in state-of-industry learning spaces, including a new digital Fabrication Lab and an Engineering Materials, Mechanics and Metrology Lab, which houses the hands-on tools and resources students need to meet the demands of the 21st Century workplace and excel in their chosen professions. • We continue to improve the financial strength of the College. Last year was the College’s strongest financial year in the last two decades. • We continue to expand our fundraising and last year nearly 19 percent of the College’s revenue came from gifts and contributions. In recognition and appreciation of this support, the names of all donors from the past year are included in the Honor Roll at the back of this report. • Our students continue to be recognized for their accomplishments and performance in local and national competitions. Several of those accomplishments are highlighted in this report.
As I write this, the ground is covered with our first snowfall, and we are preparing for the Holiday Season. Every year, I send a note to Dunwoody’s faculty and staff thanking them for their contributions towards making Dunwoody great. The message is as follows: For me, this is a time of reflection and appreciation. We’ve all struggled in some way over the past year. For my family, we lost our first parent with the passing of my father-in-law in August.
STAN WALDHAUSER
This is an exciting time in the history of Dunwoody College of Technology. The College is vibrant and energized. The 2014-2015 academic year was one of hard work and accomplishment as we focused on our strategic goals. We’ve made a lot of progress and it is just the beginning!
After he had passed away, we cried and laughed and prayed and reflected. Over the next days and weeks we heard many stories about my fatherin-law, a family doctor in Waconia since the mid-1950s: from delivering over 1,500 babies to helping families through countless medical emergencies, to the impact he had on the community and one woman’s story that ended with “he saved my life.” This experience caused me to reflect on the important things in life. Things like the relationships we share with our families and our communities; things like building better lives by helping people achieve their potential and giving people the opportunity to achieve more than they ever thought they could — things that all of you make possible by your commitment to Dunwoody and to our students. Many of you know that during this time of year, I cherish taking the time to reflect, appreciate and give thanks for the things we have and for the things we have lost. We as an institution make a huge difference in people’s lives. We all share stories of how Dunwoody has changed lives — how for over 100 years we have helped people in “the better performance of life’s duties.” Even more so this year, I am thankful for the wonderful community we have — for all of you and for your commitment to our students and to each other. I wanted to share this with you because together the alumni, friends, trustees, faculty, staff and students create a remarkable Dunwoody family. I am thankful for your commitment to Dunwoody and our students. You are making a difference. Stay committed. Be proud. We are Dunwoody!

Dunwoody Launches New School of Engineering Beginning in 2016, Dunwoody will join a handful of other colleges and universities in Minnesota that offer baccalaureate programs in engineering. The Minnesota Office of Higher Education and The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association approved Dunwoody’s new Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree. “Dunwoody is always looking for educational offerings that benefit industry and help bridge the skills gap, fit within our educational philosophy and expertise and, above all, provide good career opportunities for students,” President Rich Wagner said. Dunwoody is currently exploring other core majors for its School of Engineering.

Candidacy Granted for Bachelor of Architecture Dunwoody Architecture offers the only 2+3 associate’s and bachelor’s completion degree program in the state. This provides students with a short, clear path to becoming a licensed, practicing architect. Recently, the program completed its first phase towards professional accreditation and was granted initial candidacy by the National Architecture Accrediting Board (NAAB). Dunwoody is one of a few colleges in the nation that allows students with two-year architectural degrees to transfer into year three of a professional degree program.

Dunwoody received a score of 94 out of 100 — the highest of any college or university in Minnesota — in a recent report by the Brooking Institution. The report focused on value-added measures, such as the economic success of graduates.
Dunwoody held its Centennial Gala Celebration in October 2014. Featured in Minnesota Monthly, the event was attended by more than 800 guests; and more than $300,000 was raised for student scholarships.
Automotive Collision Repair & Refinishing installed a new upgraded paint booth. Funded through grant dollars, the booth upgrade means students and faculty can use waterborne paint, an environmentally friendly paint that is gaining traction in body shops across the U.S. and internationally.

A Strong Foundation and a Bright Future By Jim McDonald, Dunwoody CFO
Dunwoody College of Technology is once again pleased to report that it continues to improve its financial position.
In fact, during the past year Dunwoody has made several strategic investments to its facilities, programs and operations, including:
The strong financial position is due to increased enrollment and continued fundraising success. These two factors led to slightly higher total revenue for Fiscal Year 2014-2015 and helped offset a lower than normal return on investments, caused by a downturn in the market at the end of the fiscal year. Besides increasing total revenue, the College is also effectively managing its expenses and spending less money than it is taking in. As a fiscally strong institution, Dunwoody can invest in needed infrastructure improvements and expand its program offerings to further grow the College.
• Launching a School of Engineering — Dunwoody received approval to offer a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering beginning Fall 2016, and additional engineering degrees will follow. • Installing a new, state-of-theart Digital Fabrication Lab — a hands-on laboratory that provides students with the necessary resources for material testing, prototyping, product design and development, visualization and digital fabrication. • Creating a new Engineering Materials, Mechanics and Metrology Lab — which houses state-of-the-art technologies from companies like Carl Zeiss, Haas, MTS and Stratasys.

WITC Program Helps Female Students Succeed Women in Technical Careers (WITC) is Dunwoody’s new scholarship program designed to help female students succeed in technical degree programs at Dunwoody. Recipients of the scholarship receive $20,000 in scholarship funding and childcare assistance if needed. However, WITC is much more than just financial assistance. It also serves as a series of support services and networks — all designed to remove barriers that
often prevent women from seeking non-traditional professions. “Throughout their time at Dunwoody, WITC students participate in a cohort program, a mentorship program and monthly professional development workshops. They also have direct, one-on-one support from an advisor,” said Women’s Enrollment Coordinator Maggie Whitman. “Scholarship funding combined with support services really makes a difference.”
Student Honored for Multi Housing Contributions Construction Project Management student and WITC Scholarship recipient Marydithe Edgerton received a Multi Housing Achievement in Design, Advertising and Community Support (MADACS) Award in Individual Maintenance.

The Award — given annually by the Minnesota Multi Housing Association (MHA) — recognizes an individual who independently manages the maintenance of an apartment building while also making significant contributions to the progression of the multi housing industry. Despite being a full-time student, Edgerton still helps manage The Lamoreaux apartment complex, an affordable housing building in Minneapolis. Her responsibilities range from replacing drywall to fixing a leaky faucet. Edgerton will graduate with an associate’s degree in Construction Project Management in Spring 2017. She hopes to continue her career in affordable housing as a Project Manager — preferably at Aeon, the company she currently works for.
Jackson Leadership Lecture Series Continues to Grow Launched in February 2015, the Jackson Leadership Lecture Series has continued to expand. This fall, speakers have included: APi Group Inc. CEO and President Russell Becker (pictured right); Owner of ATEK Companies Kay Phillips; Vice President of Leadership Development for Ameriprise Twanya Hood Hill; and President & COO of Tastefully Simple Nancy Dahl.

From the beginning, the Crosby family has been woven into the fabric of Dunwoody College of Technology. Spanning generation after generation, the family has continuously served the College and its students and left a lasting legacy that is a cornerstone of this institution. Originally from Maine, the John Crosby family settled in Minneapolis and established the Washburn Crosby Co. (now known as General Mills) in 1877 at the request of Cadwallader C. Washburn. The Washburn Crosby Co. was one of the flour businesses that would give Minneapolis the reputation as the milling capital of the country. Two years later, in recognition for his success in opening new markets for flour, William Hood Dunwoody was named one of the four partners of Washburn, Crosby & Company. The Crosby family’s service to the College began in 1914 when in his Last Will and Testament William Dunwoody named two Crosbys — Franklin Crosby and John Crosby IV — as founding members of the Board of Trustees for The William Hood Dunwoody Industrial Institute. Since that very first year, at least one Crosby has held a seat on the Board, providing more than 165 years of collective service to the College. John Crosby IV served on the Board of Trustees for 48 years and Franklin Crosby served for 33 years. John’s son Henry served on the Board for 20 years, and Franklin’s sons George and Thomas served for 17 and 20 years respectively. In 1985, David P. Crosby began his service to the College. He continues to serve on the Board of Trustees to this day.
George Crosby 1947-1964
Throughout the years, members of the Crosby family have also been invaluable members of numerous committees, which have guided campus building projects and resulted in successful capital campaigns. In addition to their years of service and strong leadership, the Crosby family, including David and Katherine Crosby; Tom (deceased) and Ellie Crosby; Mary Dolan; Lucy and Robert Mitchell; Eleanor C. and Frederick Winston; and Robert and Teri Crosby; and the generations that came before, have provided generous philanthropic support that has helped shape Dunwoody into the strong and vibrant College it is today. In recognition of their unwavering dedication and support, Dunwoody College of Technology was honored to present the 2015 William and Kate Dunwoody Philanthropist Award to the entire Crosby family at this year’s President’s Dinner. The award is named in recognition of College founders William and Kate Dunwoody. We are extremely proud that the Crosby family has chosen to support the College for more than a century. We are humbled by their philanthropic spirit, which has greatly benefited Dunwoody College and the lives of countless students.

Gary N. Petersen
Retired President and COO of Minnegasco Dunwoody Board of Trustees 1990-present
17
2015 Honor Roll Spotlight
Gary Petersen has always approached his service to Dunwoody College of Technology with a “never say no” philosophy. For the retired President and Chief Operating Officer of Minnegasco (now Centerpoint Energy) this has translated into 25 years of volunteer service as a member of the Dunwoody Board of Trustees, including two years as Chair and another two years as Treasurer. In addition, Petersen has served on numerous committees and even chaired the Good to Great Capital Campaign, which ran from 2001-2009. Petersen’s long history with Dunwoody first began in 1990. As the new Chief Operating Officer for Minnegasco, Petersen was proud of the company’s long history of hiring Dunwoody grads. “Dunwoody has always provided the best technicians,” Petersen said. So when he was asked to join the Board of Trustees, Petersen was happy to say “yes.” “When I joined, the Board had so much great experience and leadership,” Petersen said. “It took me a couple of years to figure out how I could contribute.” Of the 160 individuals who have sat on the Dunwoody College of Technology Board of Trustees over the past 101 years, Petersen has had the pleasure to know and serve with 81 of them. A Certified Public Accountant, Petersen graduated from Iowa State University with a B.S. degree in Computer Science. His career first began in public accounting, which led to his work with public utilities and then to senior management. His background in finance meant Petersen was a natural fit for the Finance and Audit Committee at Dunwoody. In addition, Petersen’s leadership experience in the areas of strategic thinking and planning led to his involvement in developing Dunwoody’s formal program evaluation system, which is still used by the Board to this day. In 1998, Petersen retired from Minnegasco and became an independent consultant. Even after his departure from the utility company, Petersen has remained a valued and active member of the Board of Trustees.
Besides giving of his time and talents, Petersen and his wife Barbara have also donated generously to the College. “There is definitely a joy of giving” Petersen said, adding that his affinity to Dunwoody comes from knowing that there really is a Dunwoody Difference that can be seen in the students and graduates who leave here ready to work from Day 1. In addition to his volunteer service to Dunwoody, Petersen also served as a Board Member for the YMCA for more than 20 years and held several volunteer roles with his church. In fact, through his involvement with all three organizations, Petersen has been directly involved in eight different capital campaigns. And when he is not serving on Boards or giving back to his community, Petersen is an avid sports fan who enjoys spending time with his family. When he looks to the future, Petersen is excited about the direction that Dunwoody is heading, with the addition of more 4-year Bachelor of Science degrees offered through its new School of Engineering. “We’re on the cusp of taking off in the next 100 years,” Petersen said.

Ann Harty, ’02 Automation Technology Sales Executive with Spartan Promotional Group, Inc. Board of Managers 2003-Present
2015 Honor Roll Spotlight In 2000, Ann Harty was looking for a career boost. So the experienced sales rep decided to take her mother’s advice and enroll at Dunwoody. The decision was a good one. “I actually got a job before I graduated,” Harty said, who earned an associate’s degree in Automation Technology: Packaging & Manufacturing Systems in 2002. Harty had initially planned to enroll in the Electrical Construction program, but after learning it was full, she decided to start in the Automation program knowing she could transfer over later if she wanted. Encouraged and supported by the faculty and staff, Harty ended up staying in the program. The hands-on training appealed to Harty. As a child, Harty fondly remembers fixing gumball machines with her dad in their basement as part of their “gumball route.” So after a sales career that included everything from boats and appliances to cars and mini-donut machines, Harty and a friend started a washer/dryer reconditioning business. The hands-on work and entrepreneurial enterprise inspired Harty’s decision to learn a trade. After graduation, Harty was hired by Rapid Packing as an automated packaging machine sales rep. Her position allowed her the hands-on work she was looking for, since she also assisted with the installations. Harty also keeps true to her entrepreneurial roots. Her family owns a bait shop and boat rental business on Medicine Lake and she works there every chance she gets.
invaluable,” Harty said about her reasons for staying connected and giving back. A member of the Student Government while she attended Dunwoody, Harty was only out of college for a year when the College President contacted her and asked if she would be willing to serve. Since joining the Board, Harty has been a dedicated volunteer, serving 12 years on the fundraising committee and currently the marketing committee. She serves as chair of the Program Advisory Committee for the Automated Systems & Robotics Program. She also provides mentoring to current students.
Harty had been with Rapid Packaging for 10 years when a customer recruited her to sell promotional products. Now a sales executive with Spartan Promotional Group, Inc., Harty has remained connected to Dunwoody and is an active volunteer and member of the College’s Board of Managers.
As part of how she gives back, Harty takes advantage of the automated monthly donation feature provided through the Annual Fund. Having her donation come out automatically each month is an easy, affordable and convenient way for her to give back.
“Learning a trade afforded me a good job and all of the connections that I made at Dunwoody have been
“I feel so blessed that I was able to go to school here and I want to see others succeed,” Harty said.

Norwood G. “Woody” Nelson, ’60 Electrical General Retired Director of Corporate Facilities for Cummins/Onan Co. Legacy Association Member When Woody Nelson graduated from Dunwoody in 1960 he could never have imagined where his degree would take him. The Electrical General degree not only landed him his first job doing electrical maintenance and repair work in the J&L Steel mines in Northern Minnesota, it also opened the doors that would eventually lead him into facilities management. Before retiring in 1999, Nelson served as the Director of Corporate Facilities for all of Cummins/ Onan — a global power generation leader. Nelson’s career at Cummins spanned more than three decades and took him all over the world. Even after retirement, Nelson has stayed active in his professional organizations and as a consultant. Growing up on a small farm near Cloquet, Minnesota, Nelson said “fixing things was a way of life.” And during his senior year of high school he was a trainee working as an electrician for a paper company in Cloquet. The job appealed to him and after graduation he made the decision to move to Minneapolis and enroll at Dunwoody. During the 18 months Nelson was at Dunwoody, he really enjoyed getting to know his classmates and knowing that he was learning a skill that he enjoyed doing. After graduating, Nelson went to work for J&L Steel while his wife finished up her master’s degree in Library Science at the University of Minnesota.
man position and that position led him into his career in facilities management. By 1971, Nelson was the Manager of Plant Engineering for Onan. Nelson liked the variety and challenge of his work. His work not only meant managing the current facilities, but helping design the new ones. He also became active in several professional associations, including serving as President of the American Institute of Plant Engineers (now Association for Facilities Engineering - AFE) local chapter and serving on the National Board of AFE for 12 years, becoming National President in 1993. In fact, Nelson was honored professionally by his colleagues in 1996 when he was inducted into the AFE’s College of Fellows. During all this time, Nelson has stayed active and connected to Dunwoody. He and his wife Muriel feel strongly about giving back and have made the decision to become Legacy Association members by including the College in their estate planning. “Muriel and I have been blessed, so we want to give something back to the places that helped us,” Nelson said. “I hope that in doing so, someone else will have the opportunity to have as much fun as I did in this career and in this life.”
2015 Honor Roll Spotlight
Understanding that the career opportunities for both he and his wife were far greater in the Twin Cities, Nelson answered a general ad in the Star Tribune for an electrical tester and sent in a letter and resume. At the time, he didn’t know the position was with Onan Corporation, which would later be acquired by Cummins Engine Company. Nelson believes his degree from Dunwoody was one of the reasons he not only got an interview, but was offered a job the same day. His career at Onan took a different path than the one he expected. He was soon tapped to take on the fore-
