Back in March of 1985, the very first issue of duPont REGISTRY went on sale. With this April edition, we celebrate 37 years of continuous publishing. The fact that a print magazine is still in business after all that time is worthy of champagne and cake, but we haven’t simply survived — we’re thriving. Last month, we debuted the magazine’s new look, which is our signal to you that we’re ready for another 37 years of publishing. It incorporates a new design, larger dimensions, and better paper quality, while also tying into our digital offerings with QR codes that take you directly from the page to more great content on your screen. I still have some of those early duPont REGISTRY issues. Like many of you, I saved my favorites from 20 and 30 years ago. Flipping through their pages today instantly brings me back to the first time I cracked the spines and saw the hottest cars of the era in print. Where else could you go in the mid-’80s to see every manner of exotic car for sale, all in one place? Without this magazine, I submit that the market for supercars wouldn’t have exploded in the late 1980s as quickly as it did. The Lamborghini Countach, Ferrari F40, and Porsche 959 were plastered on these pages during that time. Those poster-era supercars started a revolution among automakers. They created new standards for performance, design, and exclusivity that companies began clamoring to raise and defend. The supercars that followed became chapters in a book that’s still being written today with vehicles like the Bugatti Chiron, Koenigsegg Jesko, and McLaren Senna. One such car was the Porsche Carrera GT, which appears on our cover this month. This mid-engine, V10-powered Porsche roadster was produced between 2003 and 2007, and like all the vehicles I’m talking about, it redefined what being “super” meant for a car. The Carrera GT was an instant classic, made even more legendary when its production run was cut short. Only 1,270 of the originally intended 1,500 units were produced and sold, and the car for sale on our cover may be the one with the lowest mileage (at least that we know of). Read all about it in “The Last Analog” on page 20. Classic supercars, whether newer examples like the Carrera GT or progenitors of the genre like the Countach, are our specialty. We’ve stuffed the SELL section with vintage exotics for sale to celebrate the classics. We have to admit, after 37 years and more than 400 issues, we feel like a classic, too.

The Carrera GT is widely regarded as the best car that Porsche has ever produced — after the legendary 959, of course. Over the last few years, the svelte concept car has achieved “holy grail” status, not only for its good looks, but for all the famous drivers and car enthusiasts from around the world who have dubbed it the last true driver’s car. Launched in 2004, with a production run that stretched until late 2006, the Carrera GT was the German manufacturer’s answer to the Ferrari Enzo. While the Stuttgart-based company initially planned to build 1,500 examples, only 1,270 units were ever made. Production ceased due to forthcoming changes in air-bag regulations in the United States. A 5.7-liter DOHC V10 with four valves per cylinder delivers 605 horsepower, enough to launch the car from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and help it achieve a top speed of 205 mph. Notably, the engine was originally developed for Formula 1 and LMP car racing; when neither of those endeavors worked out, Porsche decided to use it as the base of its upcoming supercar. The Carrera GT’s engine, gearbox, and differential are mated to a carbon-fiber subframe that bolts behind the seats. The chassis is made up of about a thousand pieces of carbon-fiber cloth cured under extreme temperatures, and dupontregistry.com

it just so happens to be manufactured by the same company that produced the chassis for the Ferrari Enzo. The body panels are made up entirely of carbon fiber, as is the tub. The wheels are made of forged magnesium and weigh a third less than standard aluminum wheels. The front crush structure is made of aluminum, and parts of the suspension are made of titanium. The beechwood shift knob (an homage to the 917 race car) sits slightly high-

er than traditional shift knobs, as Porsche felt that a shifter closer to the steering wheel would enhance the driving experience. With an initial launch price of about $450,000, the car was slow to move out of dealers, especially when you could drive out with a fully loaded 911 for $300,000 less. After production stopped, the price of the car dipped a little before hitting rock bottom during the 2008 recession. At that time, many buy-

ers were able to acquire the car for between $200,000 and $300,000, a far cry below today’s prices. The stratospheric rise in valuation for the Carrera GT — and any “analog” supercar of the 1990s and 2000s, for that matter — can be attributed to the fact that virtually all supercars and hypercars rolling out of assembly lines today are either paddle-shifted or come equipped with hybrid powertrains. (While the average Carerra GT price has gone up, some standout examples have been setting new sale records.) Collectors and enthusiasts can see the writing on the wall that the day of the driver’s car is over, and if you crave the adrenaline that comes with feeling one with the car, you’ll have to look into the past and not the future.

For the hardcore enthusiast, the question is as revealing as a Myers-Briggs personality test: What car was on your bedroom poster when you were growing up? More relevant to the classic car market, the answer can portend the next great object of desire — and subsequently, the next rapidly appreciating asset. The paradigm goes something like this: Kid idolizes car on poster … car on poster haunts kid for years … grown kid can finally afford car on poster … grown kid buys car. Not only does the poster phenomenon capture the zeitgeist of a certain era (think: “Justification for Higher Education”), it taps into the collective subconscious of car fanatics who simply can’t forget their first automotive fixation. “I think there’s a general inertia with some of the bigger cars,” Harley Cluxton IV suggests, “where guys get switched onto that thing they’ve always appreciated and say, ‘You know what? Those still look right, or they look right again.’ It hits them in that very subjective, emotional way that they want to get one.” Cluxton should know: His father, former racing driver and attorney Harley Cluxton III, was the youngest exclusively autho-
rized Ferrari dealer in the United States and the founder of Grand Touring Cars Inc. The elder Cluxton also co-founded the Hammer Price app, which offers real-time reporting of auction prices for many of the desirable cars that appeared on countless childhood-bedroom posters. (Disclosure: Hammer Price is owned by duPont REGISTRY’s parent company, Motorsport Network.) Cluxton IV is no stranger to exotic cars himself, having enjoyed plenty of exposure to the Ferrari F40 that was plastered to his own bedroom wall as a child; his father owned three of the winged legends. Cluxton IV’s sentiments support the theory that Desire + Time = Price Hikes. Enthusiast buzz and a sense of nostalgia play into the equation, he says (consider the Porsche Carrera GT, Ferrari F40, McLaren F1, and Lamborghini Diablo), though the increasing values have also been linked to pandemic-related spending sprees. Sergio, a Los Angeles collector who prefers to be referenced by his first name, owns a wish list of 1980s- and ’90s-era supercars that include two Lamborghini Countaches, a Diablo SV, and a Ferrari 512 TR and 512 BBi, among others. Sergio attributes his early fondness for cars to a shared passion with his father, as well as film and TV properties like Miami Vice, The Cannonball Run, and Knight Rider. The experience of living with his dream cars, he reports, has proven to be a mixed bag. For instance: “Countaches are a let-down,” he reveals. “Mechanically, the engines and transmissions are good, but everything else seems to have issues.” Regardless, Sergio says he owns cars to drive, not just admire. One of Countaches was the lowest mileage 1989 model he knew of, with “something like 1,700 kilometers on the odometer.” He just broke 6,000 kilometers. But in their best forms, Sergio says his dream cars can be absolute dreamboats. “I could daily the 512 BBi. It’s not too stiff, the engine hums, it’s a wonderful car. And the 512 TR is my favorite. It’s the one that they would have to pull out of my cold, dead hands,” he adds with a knowing smile, suggesting that sometimes poster cars are even better in real life. A PR I L 2 02 2

There’s power in a name, and Lamborghini knows it. Of its entire catalog, perhaps no model has been quite as segment-defining as the Countach. Capturing the hearts of enthusiasts since the 1970s, the legendary ride continues to inspire cars rolling off the assembly line today. One such model is the Lamborghini Aventador, which has been in production for 10 years — but won’t be for very much longer. Throughout its decade run, we’ve seen various interpretations of the Aventador platform. From the ultra-rare Veneno to the electrified Sián, the Italian carmaker has repeatedly pushed forward, outdoing itself when it comes to design, performance, and price tag. However, instead of looking forward for the Aventador’s last hoorah, Lamborghini decided to reference the past and revive a legend. Enter the Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4, an Aventador-based limited edition that revives not only one of the brand’s most important names, but also serves as a modern take on a historic design. ••• On the special occasion of the Countach LPI 800-4’s debut, the super sports car was accompanied by two important predecessors: the first Countach LP 400 and the last Countach 25th Anniversary produced.
LPI 800-4 sports a wedge shape, tapered on both ends. NACA-style ducts serve as both a throwback and a much-needed cooling element. Powering the LPI 800-4 is the Sián’s 769-horsepower 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12, assisted by a 33-horsepower electric motor. The result is a 0 to 62 mph run of 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 221 mph. At a dry weight of 3,516 pounds, the LPI 800-4 is more than 100 pounds lighter than the Sián, thanks in part to its carbon-fiber body panels. Part of a 112-vehicle run with a starting price of $2.64 million, the Countach LPI 800-4 sold out in less than a week. If Netflix had existed in 1996, it’s not hard to imagine a Drive to Survive–style series documenting the Formula 1 rivalry between Williams teammates Jacques Villeneuve and Damon Hill. Both happened to be sons of famed fathers who died early deaths — Gilles Villeneuve while driving for Ferrari in 1982; Graham Hill in a plane crash shortly after the two-time world champion ended his F1 career. Having finished runner-up to Damon in 1996, the younger Villeneuve, then 25, would go one better the following year, clinching the world championship title despite Michael Schumacher’s cynical attempt to take him out in the season finale at Jerez in Spain (an attempt that would result in Schumacher being disqualified entirely from the championship). It has been 25 years since Villeneuve claimed his Formula 1 title, but he hasn’t stopped racing. Most recently, he reigned victorious during the final two rounds of the 2021 NASCAR Euro Series. At home in Milan, Italy — not far from where his father, Gilles, entered the annals of F1 history as one of Ferrari’s most celebrated drivers — Jacques reflects on

how it all started: with his dad. In Damon Hill’s autobiography, Watching the Wheels, Villeneuve’s former teammate writes candidly about growing up in the shadow of a famous father. Damon was often introduced as “Graham Hill’s son” rather than by his own name. Villeneuve, comparatively, never gave the impression that he carried the weight of his father’s F1 legacy. “No, I never did,” he says. “I think I was under a shadow as long as he was alive. It was a different era, when fathers loved their daughters but were proud of their sons. It was tough to be a son back then. All I wanted was love, but that didn’t happen because I was sent to school in the mountains, living in someone else’s home, away from my family and away from my dad.” But Gilles’ death during qualifying for the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder allowed 11-year-old Jacques to emerge from that shadow. “The fact that he died saved me, I think in that aspect, psychologically, which is a terrible thing to say, but it gave me freedom,” Villeneuve says. “When I went to boarding school after he died, it allowed me to grow up. I went from last in class to first within a month. And I was ski racing. Suddenly I became me.” On skis, the French Canadian discovered the satisfaction of pure competition. “What I did in skiing, I brought into racing,” he says. “If we would go and jump some cliffs, I would make sure I would jump a cliff that nobody else could jump, just for the sake of it.” As with many drivers, Villeneuve’s move into car racing began with karting. He took a course at the Jim Russell Racing School at Mont-Tremblant in Canada. Outings in Italy in a Group N Alfa Romeo followed, and eventually, he landed a seat with Prema Racing in Italian Formula 3. Then came some decisive moves, starting with selecting a manager. He appointed Craig Pollock, a former teacher from Collège Alpin Beau Soleil in Villars-surOllon, Switzerland. Pollock would remain at Villeneuve’s side for a decade and a half. The shift to Japan to drive with Cerumo was a turning point in terms of on-track performance. Villeneuve then moved into the North American Toyota Atlantic series, in which he finished third in 1993 with Forsythe-Green Racing. The faith in Villeneuve displayed by team co-owner Barry Green and engineer Tony Cicale proved to be a catalyst. “That was super important because Barry and Tony, the two of them together, had my back,” Villeneuve says. “Barry believed in what I could do.” Green so supported Villeneuve that he was prepared to risk losing their Player’s

sponsorship if the tobacco giant insisted on supporting another driver. That ultimately resulted in Green’s split with Jerry Forsythe and the creation of Team Green. In 1994, Villeneuve’s debut Champ Car season, the driver was crowned Indy 500 Rookie of the Year and scored his first race win with a closely fought victory over Emerson Fittipaldi and Al Unser Jr. at Road America. The following season, Villeneuve won the championship with four outright victories, one of which was the Indy 500. Suddenly, everyone was paying attention to “Villeneuve Jr.,” including Formula 1 executive Bernie Ecclestone. With his help, Pollock pulled together a deal with Frank Williams, who offered Villeneuve a test at Silverstone. “The test went well,” Villeneuve recalls. “Driving the car was not really complicated. It was easy to adapt. The F1 cars had less horsepower than the Indycars at the time, but the car was lighter, much more nervous and nimble. It was reacting more like a go-kart compared to an Indycar, plus it had more G-force and was braking a lot later.” Villeneuve’s first Formula 1 win came in the European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring in Germany. Three more victories followed in Britain, Hungary, and Portugal. It was in Estoril, Portugal, that Villeneuve produced dupontregistry.com

Like countless enthusiasts in the 1980s,Anthony Battista was infatuated with exotic cars, but the Lamborghini Countach more so than any other motoring luminaries. “The first time I saw one in a magazine,” he remembers, “I said to myself, ‘I’m buying that car.’ ” Despite his relative youth, the 28-year-old from Connecticut was in the enviable position then to make that dream a reality, having saved enough to purchase one under the right circumstances. Unfortunately, a new one was out of the question, given that none were available from local dealers without having to endure an interminable wait. Instead, Battista embarked on a search for a pre-owned specimen, which lasted almost two years, testing his patience and leading him to wonder if the right car would ever come along. Each month, he thumbed through the pages of Hemmings Motor News, but every time a listing caught his interest, he found that it had already sold. In 1988, however, an issue of duPont REGISTRY provided Battista with a promising lead. Jeff Walther Dodge, located in Centerville, Ohio, was selling a 1985 Countach 5000S QV at an attractive price. After several long-distance telephone calls negotiating the terms, a deposit was paid, leading Battista and his father to purchase one-way airline tickets to retrieve the car from the dealer. “I was naïve,” Battista says. “It was advertised as a four-valve car, but when we arrived, I was told it was a two-valve model and didn’t know enough to care either way.” The road trip back to New England was memorable, a 15-hour drive that neither father nor son would soon forget. Filling the twin fuel tanks required some skill to accomplish, but each stop for gas provided an opportunity to meet new friends. Complete

strangers would approach them and ask to sit in the car, most of them women, which pleased the new owner to no end. Driving the car home exceeded all expectations, although Battista recalls it was much different than it would have been in a Lincoln Town Car. “Everything was stiff,” he says, while “changing gears was tougher than expected.” Still, it was an incredible experience — driving a dream, with his father along for the ride. Unfortunately, the throw-out bearing on the clutch failed two weeks later, which quickly taught Battista that exotic car maintenance is not for the faint-hearted. The engine-out procedure caused him to question the wisdom of the purchase, although the feeling faded once the car returned to the road. Over the next 14 years, he covered more than 6,000 miles, driving the Countach throughout the Northeast, including several trips to the beach. But then, for the ensuing two decades, the Countach languished in storage. Battista considered restoring the vehicle, and that led him three years ago to We Are Curated in Miami, Florida, a well-respected firm in the exotic restoration community. Thanks to 45 years of experience, the German tuner has officially become a Mercedes-Benz ClassicPartner, opening a new restoration and maintenance division dubbed Brabus Classic. The central purpose behind Brabus Classic revolves around its 6-Star Restoration program. Dedicating sometimes upwards of 4,000 person-hours per vehicle, the technicians can completely tear down a project, restoring and reconditioning many original parts to retain the car’s authenticity. However, with its direct connection to Mercedes-Benz, the restoration division can replace any part as needed, leav-
ing vehicles in “like new” condition. This work ranges from engine overhauls to paint, body reconditioning, and even EU conversion. Beyond simply restoring these cars, Brabus Classic works with Classic Data, an organization that inspects classic cars and certifies their condition after the reconditioning work has finished. Through this certification, owners get the confirmation via a third party that the work done meets the organization’s high standards. Classic Data confirms with the accreditation that each restored classic is suitable for daily use. After completing a project, Brabus Classic provides support on the maintenance side with an extensive parts catalog, keeping these classic cars on the road for decades to come. For example, in the case of soft-top convertibles, the division has access to original Mercedes-Benz materials to craft new components while retaining total authenticity. While the restoration center specializes in upkeeping Mercedes-Benz’s most important classic models, the maintenance center will work with any of the brand’s classic cars, giving the same level of attention to a 300SL Gullwing as an enormous Unimog. For owners who partake in rallies, Brabus Classic’s maintenance center offers inspections to ensure the reliability of each vehicle before it undertakes a significant road trip. Thanks to its new status as a Mercedes-Benz ClassicPartner, Brabus Classic stands as one of 24 official locations for restoration work across Germany. Breitling x Triumph $5,500 In a partnership with Triumph Motorcycles, Breitling has developed a collaboration timepiece inspired by the café racer culture of the 1960s and the Top Time watch released back then by Willy Breitling. Powered by a COSC-certified chronometer movement, the Breitling Top Time Triumph has a brushed finish with the familiar slashed “Zorro” dial, now in pale blue (a color derived from the 1951 Triumph Thunderbird 6T), with cushion-cornered subsidiary dials.

••• At the time of release, the Bugatti Veyron boasted the most powerful braking system in automotive industry, assisted by an active rear wing.
During a recent visit to Marshall Goldman Beverly Hills, we happened upon a beautiful black-on-black 2008 Bugatti Veyron on the showroom floor. While this particular example is a rarity, reportedly one of only three ever produced in this color scheme, the model itself holds a special place in automotive history. When the Bugatti Veyron arrived in 2005, it marked a significant turning point in the hypercar market. Engineered as a way for the Volkswagen Group to flex its technological muscles, the Veyron pushed far beyond the performance capabilities of its closest competitors from Porsche, Ferrari, and Mercedes-Benz. Thanks to its quad-turbo 16-cylinder engine, the Veyron’s 1,001-horsepower output allowed it to become not only one of the most expensive new cars on the market but also the fastest, with a top speed of just over 253 mph. While that number quickly caught the attention of enthusiasts around the globe, the real secret behind the Veyron’s success was its meticulous attention to detail. In many ways, it was developed like a modern airliner, over-engineered to an extreme degree, where its performance was not only guaranteed but endlessly repeatable. From its specialized wheels and tires to its 10 radiators, hydraulically controlled wing, and brakes capable of withstanding 3,272 degrees Fahrenheit, the Veyron took no shortcuts. Achieving these stats in a stripped-out two-seater with lightweight racing trim and minimal insulation would’ve been impressive. However, the Veyron is no lightweight. It weighs more than 4,100 pounds, making it at least 1,100 pounds heavier than the Ferrari Enzo. This means that the Bugatti offers tremendous performance while doubling as a proper luxury car. In many ways, the Veyron was revolutionary through its outright speed, versatility, and true dual personality. The Bugatti Veyron shown here is a later 2008 model, currently available for sale at Marshall Goldman Beverly Hills. Priced at $1,648,900, this blackon-black example is chassis No. 118, and it has only 2,436 miles on the clock.
