The watch features a reconfigured balance wheel on the dial side and, for the first time in a Freak watch, is equipped with a date function. spending time here shopping for cars, talking to our teams and even waiting for servicing on their cars. It was a natural concept to give them something great to look at that ties in with cars while they are here,” says Beau Boeckmann, President of Galpin. “Of course, at first, it sounds like a strange idea to create a high-end retail experience of watches and accessories inside a car environment, but it is working. Car guys and watch guys are very similar, with great passions for precision and aesthetics,” says Boeckmann. Always a “car guy” having grown up in a family whose legacy is a dynasty of innovative automotive experiences, Boeckmann says he was not really a watch guy at all. Then he saw the Romain Jerome Titanic watches (with rust from the titanic actually incorporated in to the dial). “It was when everything was diamonds and bling, and along comes this brand using Rust from the Titanic and making their watches even more rare than diamonds. I was hooked,” admits Boeckmann. Of course Romain Jerome is one of the leading brands at Jewell’s at Galpin, but the store also carries brands such as B.R.M (whose entire line is inspired by the automotive world), Artya, Bremont, and half a dozen others that all have some incredibly high-tech, unusual design or technology element.
“Car guys and watch guys are very similar, with great passions for precision and aesthetics,” says Boeckmann We aren’t looking for the mass-produced brands. We want the small, exclusive, unique lines. It is similar to what we do with our cars and it fits into our customer base,” says Boeckmann. Jewell’s at Galpin is not the first new venture the family-owned Galpin dealership has embarked upon. In fact, since its founding in 1946 and Bert Boeckmann (Beau’s father) joining the company in 1953, the award-winning automotive enterprise has launched Galpin Auto Sports (GAS), in-house aftermarket customization and other assets for the serious car buyer. The “resort-like” buying atmosphere (whose Aston Martin showroom resembles a vault in British spy-like décor complete with a bar) also includes an in-house Starbucks, a children’s play area, and full-service restaurant. 888-655-2040.
LOUIS MOINET DERRICK GAZ Epic in its technical and aesthetic presentation, the Louis Moinet Derrick Gaz watch deftly blends the art of high watchmaking, automatons and whimsy. The tourbillon watch replicates the extraction of gas from the ground through a derrick (crafted in sculptured gold and rising up on the left side of the watch). The material then journeys past the constantly moving drill, and along the pipeline (the tourbillon bridge) to the right side of the dial where it is deposited into a valve handle, or tube, and stored in a tank made from polished 3161L stainless steel. Winding the watch turns the valve handle, as if to regulate the energy supply to the watch, while a manometer on the derrick indicates the power reserve for the watch. The watch is powered by a 255-part LM42 movement (designed and built in house), and lives in a patented 47mm Louis Moinet 18-karat gold case. LOUIS MOINET MEMORIS Last year, Louis Moinet rewrote the history of the chronograph with the discovery that watchmaker Louis Moinet, actually invented the chronograph in 1816 – years before the world had come to believe it had been invented. This powerful realization inspired the brand to build the world-premiere Memoris – wherein the entire chronograph function of the watch resides on the dial side. This means that every function of the monopusher column-wheel chronograph can be viewed as soon as the pusher is pressed. This unique creation required more than 300 new components to be made for the movement, including 147 parts for chronograph. The challenges in bringing the watch to fruition were numerous, including developing a special Energie Plus winding system.
