2014 Exotic Car Buyers Guide
W
elcome to this year’s dream-book/reality check-list and trip in the fast lane. The annual duPont REGISTRY™ Exotic Car Buyers Guide is all of the above and more. Needless to say, we can’t cover all of the exotics present in today’s world, but we can give you that quick glimpse that will take you further into dramatic styling, advanced engineering, and incredible performance known as the real world of exotic automobiles. So, enjoy the “flights” of fantasy or the actual stimulus to your “buying gland” as you consider your next purchase (or investment) in automotive and performance art. Speaking of investment … let’s not forget the blistering records set recently for 50-60-year-old exotic automobiles. The two stand-outs (so far) are the $27.5 million 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spider and the $35+ million 1954 Mercedes Benz W196R formula 1 Race car. Is there a chance that this year’s Exotic Car Buyers Guide contains the future $100 million car? Maybe. But, alas, it is all in the eye (pocketbook) of the beholder. However, I don’t think that we will have to wait over 50 years to reach that magical milestone. Regardless of the timing, here are a few of the “greats” that will most assuredly bring you great satisfaction in driving, and most likely in your wallet as well: Pagani Zonda Revolucion: It may be time to bid a sad farewell to the Zonda. The Revolucion is what Zonda calls the “apex of the celebration of performance,” and what we will call sorely-missed. Boasting 800 horsepower from a 6.0-liter V-12 and a six-speed magnesium transversal gearbox, it truly is performance revolutionized. LaFerrari: There’s no doubt that Ferrari is a manufacturer of legends. The LaFerrari embodies the architecture that will remain in our hearts for years to come and engineering that is surely an enthusiast’s dream. An astonishing 6.3-liter V-12 hybrid engine is seamlessly crossed with the unique design we’ve seen evolve for the past 30 years of limited-edition releases. Porsche 918 Spyder: We have long awaited the successor of the Carrera GT and are glad to be presented a hybrid of a different class. The combination of two electric motors and a 4.6-liter V-8 producing 887 horsepower has us anxious to drive. The 918 utilizes some of the most innovative technology for a superior ride and boasts numerous sport modes to let you unleash its full potential. Oh, and let’s not forget the little red button. Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series: The words “Black Series” coming from Mercedes-Benz already makes our hearts jump. But add those words to the end of a model already meant for high-grade performance, and we can’t possibly hide our excitement. Simply put, a 6.2-liter V-8 producing 622 horsepower and technology that is, well, just menacing on the track. Corvette Stingray Z51 C7: The Stingray is simply a supercar. It is the definition of American performance. It is a direct injected V-8 developing 460 horsepower and an astounding 29-mpg fuel consumption. The classic LT1 engine has been designed to have 90 horsepower more than the original. The new Stingray truly brings American performance to a whole new level. Happy Motoring,

AD TRAMANTANA Exclusively produced out of Costa Brava, Spain, this European machine has been hand built for the single purpose of connecting man to machine, heart to steel spirit to asphalt. Tramontana released their first car in 2005, although it took until 2010 to make its presence, legally, on the streets. Designed with a Formula 1 racecar merged with a European fighter jet in mind, the owner of this supercar will know the meaning of performance. Tramontana has given their car double wish-bone suspension all around. built from steel specified for competition and set as wide as a Formula 1 car. Cross the racecar handling with a 5.5-liter supercharged V-12 producing between 720-888 horsepower, and every street becomes your racetrack. But beyond the racing engineering and carbon-fiber frame is an indestructible cockpit specifically designed to fit the driver. The owner is able to choose the interior trim with anything from wood, to carbon fiber, to gold. The leather seats are sewn by hand and shaped according to the drivers’ body. Everything is brought together to create the perfect drive.
ALFA ROMEO 4C We know; we know. You've heard it all before. We've said it all before. A lightweight, mid-engine, composite-bodied, limited-edition Alfa Romeo will pave the way for the brand's resurrection after a 20-year hiatus. It's as bad as those rumors that surround Donald Trump's candidacy every presidential election season. Well, this time we mean it. But unlike the expensive, Ferrari-powered 8C we centered on in our last prognostication, the 4C will go more mainstream, offering seductively sculpted styling worthy of coming from the country that is home to Zagato and Pininfarina. Better still, it will be priced very competitively, costing about as much as a Porsche Cayman. Power, 232 horses, will come from a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a displacement of just 1.75 liters, and be sent to the rear wheels of the close-to-2,000-pound coupé through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Interested? We are, but with a limited production run, including 500 or so launch models set for the U.S., the 4C will be highly sought after. How's that for a second return?

ARIEL ATOM 3 It’s a car for those that have a penchant for fast, visceral, heart-pounding experiences. The kinds of people who enjoy bungee jumping and leaping out of perfectly good airplanes. Not that those activities are any more dangerous—despite the rise in life-insurance pre-miums—than, say, driving down the highway, but it all lends itself to a situation that may seem a wee-bit life-threatening. How else can you describe a wind-blown blast in an open-top car with nothing between you and the road but a tubular steel frame? And that’s just in the 230-horsepower version. A supercharged, 300-horsepower variant may get you labeled a speed junkie with oil for blood by anyone who sees the automobile as a simple tool to get to and fro. Enthusiasts, on the other hand, will see a man who loves a highpitched engine roar, a cerebrum-sloshing amount of grip, and a back-to-basics build free from electric nannies. We urge the skeptics to take a trip to the Virginia International Raceway, next door to the TMI AutoTech shop, where the Ariel Atom is built. One hot lap may make anyone a convert. 2014 Exotic Car Buyers Guide

2013 ASTON MARTIN CYGNET From a distance, you may not think much of this economy sized hatchback. But with a few steps closer it becomes more and more clear that you’re looking at possibly the most luxurious city car in the world. The Aston Martin Cygnet is the baby in the Aston family but a well- deserved member none the less. Hand crafted and loaded with options, this city bug is personable, prestigious and anything but unimpressive. The Cygnet has been decorated to be recognized like any of its big brothers. Everything, from the bonnet mesh, to the zinc side-strakes, to the badge that we all recognize, bellows out Aston. Like its family members, LED tail lights and bi-halogen headlights are used to ensure roads are well seen. But, unlike its big brothers, the Cygnet packs a different, more convenient kind of punch. With a 1.33liter dual VVT-I I-4 engine, you’ll get a fantastic 56.5 combined mpg. Inside, you find all the same leather, smell and high-end quality you find in any other Aston Martins making the driving experience a pleasure with every mile the Cygnet takes you.
ASTON MARTIN DB9 You catch it? The Virage was here so that it briefly slipped by most enthusiasts' radars—and consumers' pining. It was supposed to fill a void, albeit an extremely small one, in the Aston Martin coupé range between the 470-horsepower DB9 and the 510-horsepower DBS. As of 2013, the latter was replaced with the Vanquish, and most importantly, the former moved upmarket, adopting some of the Virage's visual appeal while utilizing some of the brand's new engine know-how to increase output to 510 ponies. The new AM11 engine features dual variable valve timing, a revised block and heads, enlarged throttle bodies, an uprated fuel pump and reworked intake plumbing. The result is an engine note so ravenous you may want to opt for the Volante body style to get better acquainted with it. Rounding out the new DB9 are adaptive dampers with Normal, Sport and Track modes and carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes disks. They measure 15.7 inches at the front and 14.2 at the rear, but despite growing more than an inch all around, they weigh about 28 fewer pounds.

ASTON MARTIN RAPIDE S The Rapide S. It’s a sportier new variant that hopes to squelch the two biggest complaints about the short-lived non-S Rapide: its lack of power and its resemblance to a low-cost Ford. The former was especially damning because of a car requiring 25 percent less cash but making 30 more horsepower—the Panamera Turbo. Luckily, thanks to a round of revisions first employed in the Vanquish, the engine in the Rapide now generates 70 more horsepower. In addition, it sits 0.8 of an inch closer to the ground for a lower center of gravity and features the “flip” rear lid that aids in aerodynamics and is quickly becoming a feature of the entire range. Complementing these exterior changes are new interior packages, including the “Q by Aston Martin” personalization service. Then, there is the Ford problem, arising from the Fusion, a car costing 90 percent less but with a strikingly similar grille. Aston Martin’s solution was to delete the middle crossbar, creating a wide mouth that brings the Rapide closer to its ultra-exclusive brethren, the V-12 Zagato. It’s breathtaking.
ASTON MARTIN VANQUISH VOLANTE The reign of the Vanquish never ceased; it was only delayed. The flagship model is once again a part of the Aston Martin stable, and for the first time ever, it comes with a retractable convertible top. It reprised its role as the premier model after leaving to learn some lessons from the high-dollar One-77. Those lessons are immediately noticeable after one look at the car’s curvaceous carbon fiber, which it makes absolute use of for its panels. The comparisons continue inside, where you’ll find an instrument panel and center console right out of the One-77. A new touch is the glass buttons with illumination and haptic feedback features. Yes, it is better than ever, but not all new. It utilizes a variant of the VH platform, which debuted in the 2004 D9, and it continues a design language first employed in 1993. It’s almost as if everything that once was, still is. But one thing the old Vanquish never was, was topless. The new car’s triple-skinned, lightweight fabric roof takes just 14 seconds to fold away, instantly preparing up to four passengers for motoring bliss.

ASTON MARTIN V-12 VANTAGE S It almost looked as if we were missing out. Great Britain got the Vantage V-12 Roadster, a roofless version of the 510-horsepower entry Aston. Meanwhile, continental Europe received the Vantage SP 10, a special V-8 Vantage S that commemorates the GT4 racecar. Jealousy was kicking in until Aston Martin unveiled V-12 Vantage S for everyone. The new model completely replaces the base V-12 Vantage and comes equipped with the upgraded Vanquish engine, offering up a 55-horsepower boost to easily crack a four-second 0–62 and a top speed of 200 miles per hour. Outside the One-77, it’s the fastest Aston ever built for the street. It also gets the Vanquish’s three-stage adaptive damper with Normal, Sport and Track modes. The dampers work in conjunction with another button-activated Sport mode which heightens the throttle response, exhaust notes and gearshift speed and timing. Gone is the six-speed manual, but we gain a new, automated manual transmission, offering faster shifts in a lighter package. It’s enough to make other Vantages jealous and keep us content.
ASTON MARTIN V-12 ZAGATO With the departure of the One-77, the V-12 Zagato is just in time to take the reins as Aston Martin’s flagship supercar. Could this be a new trend for the brand? The Aston Martin V-12 Zagato pays tribute to the 1961 DB4GT Zagato, wears handsome, handcrafted aluminum and carbon-fiber body panels and will be available through a limited production run of 150 units available on a first-come, first-served basis. With all this goodness, it may be hard to imagine it’s based on the entry-level Aston, albeit the V-12 version. Yet the two will share nearidentical performance specifications and dimensions, including a 5.9-liter V-12 engine producing 510 horsepower and 420 foot-pounds of torque, and a top speed of 190 miles per hour. Aston Martin doesn’t downplay the similarities, calling the new Zagato the pinnacle car of the Vantage range. It will do little to diminish the car’s importance, however, since Aston Martin admits the V-12 Zagato expands on the modern materials and processes pioneered on the One-77. One thing it doesn’t take from the One-77 is the million-dollar price tag.

… there is a cold and blustery northerly wind. Beyond the mountains, the Tramontana wind blows every now and then. Legend says the wind is so forceful and whimsical that it has an effect on the human psyche, causing some to go mad. The wind appears magically and unexpectedly. And when it blows hard, the sky turns into a deeper shade of blue and it rustles through every nook and cranny in the Empordà region of Girona. Inheriting the spirit of this legendary wind is the aptly named “Tramontana” created by A.D.Tramontana.This lightweight supercar slice through the wind thanks to incredible aerodynamics and a 100% carbon-fiber monocoque inspired by Formula 1. 2014 Exotic Car Buyers Guide
It feels like a compromise between siblings. The limited-edition R8 GT was too much of a good thing to let it completely slip away, so we each get to keep half. That’s roughly how many parts Audi says the V-10 Plus shares with the trackfocused R8 GT. With half of the track-car’s upgrades, the R8 V-10 Plus doesn’t offer the same weight reduction, but it has shed quite a few pounds and makes up for the difference with a whole new quicker-shifting transmission. It starts with a 550-horsepower version of the 5.2-liter V-10. The upgraded engine first showed up in the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4. For the R8, it’s a 25 horsepower increase over the base V-10 and only 10 shy of the GT. We also get the ceramic brakes and a host of carbon-fiber bits, reducing the vehicle’s weight by 130 pounds. As would be expected, it’s nearly half the GT’s 220-pound reduction. The biggest change is the new transmission. Ditching the not-so-smooth sequential manual for the time-tested RS-model-proven dual-clutch transmission is a logical step that should have been made a few years ago. On its own, it reduces the zero-to-60 time by 0.3 of a second, helping take the R8 V-10 Plus down to 3.3 seconds for the 0–60 rush and holding gears and blipping the throttle with the best of them. The new trim and transmission are part of other subtle tweaks for the new year, which includes a new grille and full-LED lights on the outside and diamondstitched leather seats on the inside. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

AUDI RS5 CABRIOLET Naturally aspirated big V-8s are slowly falling by the wayside as manufacturers demand more from every cubic centimeter in preparation for 2016 and Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, which will demand an average of 35.5 miles per gallon. The effects can be seen in nearly every lineup. As for Audi, the TT RS is gone and the S4 is sticking with six cylinders, leaving us to wonder how long the RS5 will continue to motor about with its big V-8. This is all the more reason to take advantage of the new-for-2014 cabriolet. It retains all the coupé’s goodies. The 4.2-liter V-8 is shared with the R8, but actually makes more power: 450 in the RS5 versus 430 in the R8. Quattro all-wheel-drive is standard, normally sending 60 percent of the torque to the rear, but offering the ability to reroute 70 percent of the power to the front if it senses slippage. It all runs through a double-clutch transmission, the RS5’s only option. The car’s convertible top does add a few hundred pounds, but it’s a mild price to pay for clear access to the savory sound of that naturally aspirated big V-8.
AUDI RS7 You have your pick from a pair of fraternal twins. The S7 is slightly better on the eyes and offers a good amount of trunk space. The S6, on the other hand, is slightly more practical for people, with more room for four friends. They are mechanically identical, varying minutely in measurements and looks. We say save up for the new RS7; who needs friends when you still have road ahead? Besides, you’ll need all your free time to master this car’s prestigious amounts of power. It’s the most horsepower of any RS model, even producing more than the R8. It may be hard to spot the RS7 as it races past you at tremendous speeds, but listen for a ravenous exhaust note and look for those signature RS air intakes and quad exhaust tips. It retains Quattro all-wheel drive, a must with this much power onboard, but that power forces Audi’s hand in another way: it had to replace the S7’s dual-clutch transmission for an eight-speed automatic. Europeans get a performance package that raises the top speed to 189 miles per hour; ours will be limited to 174.

AUDI S4 The Audi S line is about connections, a connection with man to machine and machine to the road—and about the human connection. At least what accounts for a human connection in an age when you’re more likely to get an instant message than a phone call or an online event request than a formal invitation. It’s called Audi Connect, and it offers Google-enhanced navigation, real-time weather and news updates and a mobile wireless network (i.e., hot spot) through a deal with T-Mobile. After all, today’s connected children need their streaming video services and multiplayer games everywhere they go, and well, we like all that stuff, too. Of course, none of this is designed to keep you from feeling any less united with the road. In that way, the S4 carries on with its supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 producing 333 horsepower. It is available with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission powering the standard all-wheel drive system. It can be ordered with limited-slip differentials, which, you know, help keep you connected.
AUDI S6 At first glance, it looks as though CAFE standards got another one. Gone is the 435-horsepower, Lamborghini-derived V-10, replaced with a V-8 that makes 15 fewer ponies than its predecessor. Think that means we’re not having as much fun for a 25-percent boost in fuel efficiency? Think again. Not only is the S6 nearly as potent with two fewer cylinders, but when combined with aluminum body panels, it weighs less overall and puts fewer pounds over the front axle, reducing understeer. Part of that sportiness comes from the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, which replaces the previous car’s six-speed automatic, and Quattro all-wheel drive, which can send up to 70 percent of power to the front, or 80 percent to the rear. The zero-to-60 sprint takes 4.5 seconds, 0.6 of a second less than the old V-10 powered car. In fact, the new S6 performs better than the old S6 in nearly every metric and is giving Mercedes and BMW management something to lose sleep over. This is especially true in Europe, where the RS6 Avant is running about with 560 horsepower.

AUDI S8 What’s your’re seating preference? If you prefer to call the shots from the back, you’ll want the A8 with the W-12. At $135,000, it’s a bit more expensive, but it’s got an extra five inches of legroom at the rear and ultra-smooth, 500-horsepower W-12 engine to help a chauffeur navigate traffic. Include the Executive Rear Seat package and you’re treated to reclining chairs with massage functions. “Jeeves, for tonight, let’s circle the theater while we watch a movie. I presume the center cooler has a bottle of champagne?” People that have to take the helm will want to stick to the S8 and its shorter wheelbase. Audi has taken the twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 to new extremes. It offers the 420-horsepower version, also found in the S6 and S7, in the A8’s mid-range model. For the S8, it endows that same power plant with 100 more horsepower for a stout output of 520. With aluminum already composing the body panels, there was little room to lose weight, but with an extra 70 horsepower over the previous V-10powered S8, the new amount of verve is easily perceptible, no matter where you sit.

$52,795 3.0-Liter supercharged V-6 It’s not uncommon that the U.S. receives a lesser version of available European vehicles. 354 The SQ5 is not one of those vehicles. pristine all-wheel drive that communicates with the stability control for smoother driving. While the engines may be slightly different, there is no mistake when recognizing either one. They both have an aggressive, but powerful, look in the barred grill that Audi flaunts for their S series, and both bolster the same standard leather interior with premium Nappa options. To set the SQ5 apart from an ordinary Q5 some more, Audi has given it a stiffer suspension on top of performance brakes labeled with the SQ5 tag. An impressive entrance for Audi’s Q5 into the high-performance crossover world.

AUDI TT S The rally cry of 11,000-plus Facebook fans was enough for Audi to squelch the United States’s ferment over its smallest performance-oriented model: the TT RS. It was a decisive win for as much as what we got and as much as we didn’t get—depending on your point of view. We got a 360-horsepower version of the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine, a ravenous little five-cylinder power plant that conjured up the spirit of the original 1980’s Quattro. It made 20 more horsepower than the standard European specification, but it didn’t come with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. We were instead handed a six-speed manual, a connoisseur’s dream, but it seems it’s not what the fans on Facebook wanted. In the end, it appears those young admirers didn’t turn into real-world buyers, and the TT RS was dropped for 2014. The model that carries on is the 265-horsepower TT S. No rip-roaring RS, it’s still a lot of fun with its standard Quattro all-wheel drive, potent power plant, and visually stunning styling. Heck, it’s enough for some to support in sales what they “like” on the Internet.
BMW ALPINA B7 Being fullyl integrated with the BMW design and sales processes, Alpina has insight into every car BMW builds. It has tools to provide high-performance derivatives that BMW doesn’t mind supporting in its showrooms and its service centers. We suspect the Alpina B7 and, more directly, the lack of a M7, is a sop, a bone thrown to Alpina in return for its commitment to the brand. In addition to the B7, it builds the B3, B5, and B6 based on the 3-, 5-, and 6-series, respectively, but you won’t find BMW singing the praises of those Alpina models when it already offers its own high-performance derivatives. Starting with the revised front end and new eight-speed automatic in the updated 2014 7-Series, the B7 massages the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 for an extra 40 horsepower. A recalibrated suspension lowers the car ever so slightly, and 20-spoke 21-inch wheels fill up the wells. Like the normal 7, the B7 is available with a short or long wheelbase and rear- or all-wheel drive, two options that most likely wouldn’t be available if we had an M7.

BMW M4 Heralding the arrival of the 4-Series comes the M4, a two-door coupe destined to replace the iconic M3. A double kidney grille, redesigned headlights and a carbon fiber front splitter highlight the front end of BMW’s new sports car. Three large air intakes found below the headlights keep the powerful engine cool. Upon a closer inspection of the outermost intakes, sharply outlined vertical air vents become visible. These comprise the Air Curtain design, which helps improve airflow. From the side, you see a longer car when compared to the M3 – including total length, wheelbase and bonnet length. BMW also redesigned the side gills for the M4, which include the Air Breather. This implementation, along with the Air Curtain, ventilate the wheel arches and provide better airflow. Exclusively designed 20-inch M light alloys and M carbon ceramic brakes finish off the sporty appearance on the sides. The rear of the M4 does a great job of portraying the car’s power and sportiness, thanks to the carbon fiber tipped tailpipes and diffuser. What engine the M4 will house is unknown, but the chances of BMW underpowering the M4 are slim to none
BMW M5 COMPETITION PACKAGE The new 560-horsepower M5 was officially a 2013, so it’s a little surprising that it and the M6, can be ordered with a Competition Package after just one model year. The changes don’t stop there as it undergoes the same revisions made to the normal 5-Series for 2014. These include a slightly tweaked front and rear styling and a touchpad on the iDrive control knob capable of deciphering finger-drawn characters. As we mentioned, the Competition Package can be ordered for both the 2014 M5 and M6. A boost in, well, boost, raises output by 15 for a total of 575. Buyers will also get distinct wheels, new coil springs and anti-sway bars, recalibrated dampers and a reduced steering ratio. The car sits 0.4 of an inch closer to the ground, and a modified exhaust seems as if it was designed to trigger goose bumps with its sound. The optional six-speed manual is still a U.S.A.-exclusive. It all appears to address issues some have found with the new M5, an incredibly fast technological marvel that may have lost some of the interaction between man and machine in its latest transformation.

BMW M6 GRAN COUPÉ It starts with the base 6-Series. After stretching its wheelbase by 4.1 inches and adding a pair of rear doors, we have the Gran Coupé, a late offering to the four-door coupé party. Competitors such as the Audi A7, Mercedes CLS and Porsche Panamera have been around for some time and enjoying the strong sales. The M6 Gran Coupé takes it up a notch by adopting a lot from the two-door version. This includes the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8, seven-speed double-clutch transmission, Active M limited-slip differential, carbon-fiber roof panel and the full, quite-thorough spectrum of adjustments for the damping of the suspension, the shifts from the transmission and the sensitivity of the steering. Those who want more can order the Competition Package, as in the two-door M6, but unlike the child-friendly rear quarters of that M6, the Gran Coupé offers room for four adults. The M6 Gran Coupé will also be one of the first BMW M cars to be offered with carbon-ceramic brakes, pizzapie-equaling units measuring 16.1 inches at the front.
BMW X5M CONCEPT eDRIVE Owning an SUV typically comes with the drawback of lower gas mileage; it’s common knowledge. Fortunately for SUV owners, BMW has created a concept that will change the way you look at luxury SUVs. The incredibly efficient BMW Concept X5 eDrive is the Bavarian automaker’s latest take on hybrid technology. This eco-friendly SUV is powered by a four-cylinder engine coupled with both BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology and a 70 kW/95 horsepower electric motor, which draws power from a high-voltage lithium-ion battery. Running on the fully-charged electric motor alone, the Concept X5 eDrive can travel at speeds up to 75 mph with a maximum range of 19 miles. When the gas engine and electric motor work in unison, the SUV’s fuel consumption is rated at 74.3 mpg. With this hybrid SUV bearing the legendary BMW badge, power will not be a problem. BMW states that the Concept X5 eDrive can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in under 7 seconds. When it will start being produced is unknown, but there are plenty of SUV enthusiasts setting aside money for the chance to own one.

BMW X6 M As we wait for the re-emergence of the X5 M after the X5’s 2014 model makeover and the X6 to undergo a similar redesign, we can still rely on the sportier of the two M branded SUVs, the X6 M, for just a tad bit longer. From what we have seen in the new-for-2014 X5, we suspect the redesign will bring some nice changes to the X6. Rumor has power going up and weight coming down, as much as 40 for the former and 200 for the latter, increasing the power-to-weight ratio in an SUV that already embarrasses lesser sports cars at stoplights and doesn’t simply take turns, but plows through them. We wouldn’t expect anything less than something significant from this pair. They broke all the M brand’s unspoken rules when BMW introduced them for 2010. Prior to that, there were no SUVs, no forced induction and no fourwheel-drive systems. Today, the M SUV has earned its spot in the lineup, turbocharging is an M staple, and with the proliferation of all-wheel drive throughout the AMG line, BMW will surely be driving all four wheels on its other M models in the near future.
BMW Z4 SDRIVE35IS Z-4-s-drive-3-5-i-s. In the absence of the M Roadster, the little BMW with the folding hardtop continues with a brass new color, among a few other small styling changes, and the same alphameric jumble of a name. The changes are not enough to get it close to the startlingly attractive Z4 Zagato concepts that popped up in 2012, but that may be due to how closely those concepts resembled some Zagato-designed Alfa Romeos. Still, the latest Z4 looks good; the classic roadster look—long hood and small passenger cabin just ahead of the rear axle—are subtly enhanced by slim, long new headlamps. They can be ordered with a new Valencia Orange metallic paint and a new equipment package that adds the selected colors to some of the interior pieces. Carrying on is the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6. It creates 35 more horsepower than the sDrive35i and five more than the last Z4 M. All together, the Z4 with the standard Sport package will surely attract its fair share of attention, maybe even as much as if it were an official M.

BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT CONVERTIBLE V-8 We remember our own moans when Bentley first confirmed a V-8 would be added to the Continental range. With the massive Lamborghini V-10 still powering the S6 and S8 and the new twin-turbo V-8 nowhere in sight, we envisioned a terrible world of slow, subpar Bentleys. Sliding in underneath the base W-12 and far underneath the GTC Speed, which is the fastest four-seat convertible in the world, the V-8 is much more than we thought it would be. It’s 500horsepower is plenty powerful, offering sporty amounts of go while still being able to drive 500 miles on a single tank of gas. It can go from zero-to-60 miles per hour in 4.7 seconds and tops out at 187 miles per hour on the track while bringing back 24 miles to the gallon on the highway. It retains the muscular sheetmetal, four-wheel-drive system, eight-speed automatic transmission, premium hides and real wood veneers offered in the W-12s, but it brings it in at a reduced price point while improving the model line’s overall efficiency. Now that’s nothing to balk at.
BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT SPEED Laying claim to the title of fastest road-going Bentley, the new Continental GT Speed moves the bar ever so slightly for the brand’s best-selling model. It’s really a game of one-upmanship, where the title has been doing more flip-flops than the presidential candidates in this last election. The old GT Speed originally claimed the title with a top speed of 202 miles per hour, but lost it soon after to the 204-mile-per-hour Supersports. The new GT Speed has once again taken the title back with a nice round figure of 205. It can thank the twinturbocharged 6.0-liter W-12, which creates 616 horsepower, up 50 from the base GT. It works with a new eight-speed automatic that aids the car’s performance and efficiency and feeds an all-wheel drive system with a 40:60 torque split. Bringing it to a stop are massive 16.5-inch carbon-ceramic rotors at the front and 14-inch at the rear. The record for the largest ceramic brakes on a production car is actually another title that has been passed around the Continental models. Looks like the new GT Speed takes this one back, too.

BENTLEY FLYING SPUR The Flying Spur is a little late to the redesign, prompting reservations about its continued existence. So while the GT and GTC have been running about with new threads, V-8s and higher-performing W-12s, the Flying Spur is just undergoing the facelift. But this is no mere Continental GT with four doors. In fact, it’s not even a Continental anymore. It’s still based on the Continental architecture, but has officially dropped that part of its name. Like an 18-year-old athirst for the freedom of a faraway college, the Flying Spur is going off on its own with no ties to the two-doors, at least by name. It’s fitting, seeing how much the Flying Spur has changed. The body is stiffer, but the suspension is softer for added comfort, playing to the emerging Chinese market (looks like it’s yearning for the student exchange program). It’s lighter, more powerful, and faster than the outgoing model, too. It’s also wrapped in sharp new duds, with strong feature lines, a swept-back look and muscular rear haunches. It’s doing its own thing on its own timetable.
BENTLEY MULSANNE It’s been one of those days, but you feel relieved when you see your driver downstairs. After gliding into one of the Mulsanne’s rear chairs, you recline the backrest ever so slightly, fit your feet snuggly into the footrest, and allow your head to sink in-between the wings of the headrest. A cooler is concealed by the third seat cushion for your traveling convenience. The down-filled cushions remind you to lie back, the aroma of the leather fills your nostrils, and the thoughts and stresses of the day just seem to melt away. Bentley is refining the Mulsanne’s focus with a new Comfort package, playing to those that want to be whisked away from the office physically and mentally. The new Comfort Specification is designed to make your body fuse with the soft leather while providing entertainment from the electrically deployed picnic tables with iPad® holders. There is even a new hide-lined compartment that conveniently tucks your mobile phone—and all the stress it brings—away.

YOU CAN CHOOSE THOUSANDS OF INDIVIDUAL OPTIONS. BUT NOT BETWEEN LUXURY OR PERFORMANCE. CONTINENTAL GTC V8
The new Bentley Continental GTC V8 promises an open-top driving experience that is as refined as it is exhilarating. As the engine accelerates through the smooth 8-speed transmission, the revs build taking the menacing growl to an awe-inspiring roar. It is the sound of the all-wheel drive GTC’s visceral 4.0-litre twin-turbo delivering unadulterated sports performance, dashing from zero to 60mph in a mere 4.7 seconds. This is a Bentley like no other. DIFFERENTLY DRIVEN.

BUGATTI VEYRON GRAND SPORT VITESSE To this day, the Bugatti Veyron remains a symbol of automotive excellence, defining their driver as a man of a different breed, empowering them to true high-end performance. The Vitesse is the Veyron that goes beyond unique and empowering, drawing a fine line between the Grand Sport and the Super Sport. Last year, we were to think that 2013 would be the last of the pure-blood automotive Gods. But, with the success of the Vitesse and their dedication to maintaining Price $2,500,000 the record for the “world’s fastest production car,” they’ve decided to keep the reign Engine quad-turbocharged 16.4-liter of the Veyrons going. Still, the Vitesse holds the Super Sport’s monstrous 1,200 W-12 horsepower quad-turbo 16.4-liter W-16, and the one-of-a-kind design that is instantly Horsepower 1,200 recognized by us all. The superior luxury and boundless creativity of the Vitesse is eas0 - 60 2.5 secs. ily unimaginable to anyone who has never stepped their foot on the pedal. Top Speed 255 mph The menacing power that comes with this exotic is best described as it is: the Transmission 7-speed dual-clutch automatic fastest roadster in the world. With a factory limiter set at 255 mph, Bugatti placed Torque 1,106 foot-pounds professional driver Anthony Liu behind the wheel on the Volkswagen test track for another try at a world record. The result verified their roadster to be the fastest, yet Pros: Fastest open top in production. again, only now with an open top, at an outstanding 254.04 mph. But for those of you dare devils thinking about trying this when you buy your own, Cons: Tough to find a place to test the top the Vitesse was never intended to reach more than 233 mph open top. CADILLAC CTS VSPORT SEDAN The Vsport is no CTS-V, but it will fill its shoes as the sportiest iteration of the new-for-2014 model until the CTS-V reprises its role later down the road. The CTS has grown—considerably. It’s 4.2-inches longer overall, pushing it closer to the 5-Series and E-Class, and giving the new ATS room to fill its shoes as the 3-Series and C-Class combatant. People who found the 2013 sedan’s interior space adequate will find the 2014’s hasn’t really changed. Weight is down in the non-Vsport models thanks to a number of new construction techniques and the use of lightweight materials and a new lightweight platform. The Vsport package negates the loss in weight but makes up for it with some of the highest-performing components outside of a full-blown V model. It starts with a powerful motor: an all-new 420-horsepower, twin-turbocharged V-6. The Audi S-equaling output is tied to a new eight-speed automatic transmission, driving the rear wheels through an electronic limited-slip differential. It’s great, but it leaves us wondering what the CTS-V will bring.
CHEVROLET CAMARO Z/28 As track-capable as the ZL1 proved to be, Chevy just couldn’t let a heavy supercharged Camaro sport the infamous Z/28 badge. Instead, it waited to stuff the large, 7.0-liter Z06 engine under the hood of a Camaro stripped of perfunctory items. Sound deadening material and the trunk carpet are out, as are the automatic-transmission option and the standard air conditioning system. In all, the Z/28 weighs 300 fewer pounds than the ZL1. But with 80 fewer ponies to carry it, all things may seem to be equal … until you get to the suspension. The Z/28 drops the ZL1’s magnetic ride control dampers for race-proven spoolvalve dampers, allowing engineers to dramatically increase the damping stiffness without significantly changing ride quality. Combined with a set of ceramic brakes, the result is a three-second improvement in lap times compared to the ZL1. According to Chevrolet, the stiffer string rates and suspension bushings and massive 305 tires promise up to 1.05gs of grip. All this is wrapped in an aerodynamic package atop the other changes for 2014.

he similarities between the new-generation C7 and the ‘70’s C3 are apparent. Both offer swoopy styling that bridges a gap between hard-edged American muscle cars and the smooth lines of the Italian exotics. Both carry the Stingray (one word) moniker, and both offer an LT-1 engine (the new car deletes the hyphen). But that’s where the similarities end, and the new 2014 Corvette Stringray pulls ahead—far ahead. Boasting over 370 horsepower may have gotten you far in 1970 or even 2004, but the lastest ‘Vette takes things further, offering up 460 horsepower and 465 foot-pounds of torque with the optional performance exhaust system. It will, also, take you farther, returning 29 miles to the gallon through the Active Fuel Management system, which can shut off half the cylinders during light engine loads. It all comes thanks to the new LT1. It replaces the LS3 while doling out the highest standard power ratings ever for the Corvette through a variety of small changes that have upped the ante while maintaining the capacity. Direct fuel injection, continuously variable valve timing, high compression, oil-spray piston cooling and dry-sump lubrication are just some of the keywords GM engineers are throwing around. Transmission options include a pad-

dle-shifted, six-speed automatic and, for the first time, a seven-speed manual, which is offered with revmatching technology. More power is great, but less to move is even better. An all-new more-rigid aluminum frame is 57 percent stiffer and 99 pounds lighter than the outgoing steel frame. But it doesn’t end there. Other lightweight materials are utilized, including carbon fiber for the hood and the coupé’s removable roof panel and composites for the fenders, doors, rear hatch and rear quarter panels. The rear toe links are now constructed of aluminum, and the suspension’s lower control arms have been hollowed out, saving nine and two pounds, respectively. But performance is just one area in which the Corvette has already succeeded. Those that have long been skeptical about a Corvette will be glad to hear how much attention was spent on the interior. Chevrolet promises nothing but soft-touch materials, including smooth micro-suede and sumptuous Napa leather, surrounded by genuine carbon-fiber and aluminum trim. This is one area naysayers will need to experience. No word when, or if, we can expect Z06 and ZR1 editions to soon follow, but until then, we have the return of the Z51. The Z51 Performance Package, in addition to stiffening the suspension, includes an electronic limited-slip differential as well as an aero-

The 2014 Corvette Stingray coupé is now available and the convertible, with an all-new fully electronic top, will be available at the end of 2013.

DODGE CHALLENGER SRT 392 The Challenger has always been a heavy hitter at the box office, securing its place as a furious muscle car for a couple of different generations. The ‘70s saw a white Challenger take center stage in Vanishing Point; meanwhile, today’s youth is cheering on a reborn Challenger in the Fast and the Furious franchise. It’s probably because the Challenger has always played the quintessential muscle car better than its pony-car competitors. It’s big, it’s wide, it’s heavy and its massive V-8 can rip through a pair of rear tires on command. Today’s 392, whose larger, 6.4-liter engine produces 470 horsepower and an equal amount of torque, will now be embedded in the brains of future generation for automotive enthusiasts, even if it may not be on the streets much longer. Rumor has the Barracuda, once a close relative of the Plymouth nameplate, being resurrected as a replacement with a new engine and sleeker styling.
JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE SRT The differences are night and day. The Jeep Grand Cherokee has gone from trail-rated to track-rated. From overtaking steep grades, fording rivers and storming beaches, to hugging corners, embarrassing souped-up Hondas, and otherwise running amok. O.K., the Grand Cherokee SRT, now minus the 8, has tacked on a couple of hundred pounds with its last update. But, only the truly fanatical will know—or care. Thank the massive Hemi V-8 and a new eight-speed automatic with a launch-control mode. There’s an Eco mode, too, but it may just be for looks, or your environmental conscious. Selec-Track (now with a k) fourwheel drive system offers different damping and shift points tied to how it distributes the torque. Better still is the particularly menacing appearance, complete with a hunkered down look, tinted lamps with glossy black grille surrounds and optional black rims. The SRT definitely takes the night option.

The SRT Viper is set to attack the track with a new TA package. There are a number of things those two letters could stand for, including Trams Am, but it is actually initialism for Time Attack, something the Viper has always been good at in the accompaniment of the Nürburgring Nordschleife or the Mazda Laguna Seca. At those two tracks, it has left its competition spinning their wheels in anguish. While the TA isn’t as track-oriented as the previous initialized assaulter, the ACR, it will undoubtedly hold its spot as the top track Viper until the American Club Racer does return. The TA makes its way with all the performance-minded options and a few notable changes. Now standard is the Carbon Fiber Aero Package, which gives the TA a rear wing and two-piece front splitter. It also comes with the Track Package, which replaces the wheels and brakes with lighter units while adding a set of highperformance Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires. The options not otherwise available on any stock Viper include two-mode shocks with firmer settings and a carbon-fiber (instead of aluminum) X-brace. Under the hood is all the same ol’ beast we have come to love but it now includes such advances as a lightweight composite intake and sodium-filled exhaust valves. Keeping all that power in check is the Viper’s first stability-control system. Say it with us: hallelujah! Along with a steering-wheel-activated launch-control system, it will help you attack those times. 2014 Exotic Car Buyers Guide

Much like the early-life milestone, the thirty in the California 30 represents a slight transformation of values, which, when combined with the new Handling Speciale option, addresses accusations from purists that it is too suited for cruising the boulevard instead of weaving through tight S-bends. With 70 percent of California buyers new to the brand, Ferrari sees an opportunity to market the model towards loyalists through a lighter, more powerful and more stiffly sprung iteration. The 30 goes for all new Californias, representing a gain of 30 horsepower and 14 footpounds of torque, and a loss of 30 kilograms, which amounts to 66 pounds for us Americans. The 4.3-liter V-8 now produces a maximum of 483 horsepower because of new exhaust manifolds and engine mapping, and the loss of weight is due to new aluminum fabrication techniques. In all, Ferrari says the changes enable the California to take 0.1 of a second less to reach 62 m.p.h. But the car really comes to life with the optional Handling Speciale package. It features faster-responding magnetorheological dampers, (normally a standalone option), stiffer springs and a lower steering ratio for quicker responses. With all these performance enhancements on board, it may come as a surprise that the smooth operation of a manual transmission is no longer available. With just two—yes, two— of the 8,000 or so California buyers opting for the manual transmission, it’s easy to see why it has been deemed obsolete. Still, we can’t help but wonder if the model’s new sporty enhancements wouldn’t drive a few connoisseurs or rarity-minded investors to the H-gate.

FERRARI FF A four-wheel-drive hatchback Ferrari was enough for many of the brand’s lieges to cry foul, yet there is no denying that the execution of the Ferrari Four (FF) has been nothing short of exemplary. It’s a four-seater family hauler made to be driven hard—anytime, anywhere, in rain, sleet or snow. Yes, the post office would love it. The heart of the FF’s all-wheel-drive system is the 4RM Control system which combines the F1-Trac, E-Diff and Power Transfer Unit (PTU) control systems into one, allowing it to manage both traction and stability. The 4RM utilizes these systems and predictive software to estimate the maximum amount of torque each wheel can handle without wheel spin. This system also ensures that the front axle is receiving power when absolutely necessary, like when the driver is accelerating out of a turn in low grip conditions. This is something that will have the Ferrari guard sleeping a little easier. While many may scoff at the idea of tremendous luggage space and four seats in a Ferrari, the truth is in the drive. Never before has Ferrari provided such an intelligent, stable and powerful drive.
FERRARI 458 ITALIA SPIDER It flips, folds, and falls into place. The lid on the 458 Spider is just another way the Ferrari captivates. The mechanism works for Ferrari’s goal of exciting driving, keeping the folded roof from intruding into rear engine compartment while weighing 55 fewer pounds than a traditional soft-top. This keeps weight down to 3,400 pounds on the aluminum-bodied Ferrari and helps it perform much like the coupé. For instance, the 0–60 time of 3.4 seconds and top speed of 199 mph are only a smidge behind that of the hardtop. But the coupé doesn’t offer clear access to the 458 Spider’s exhaust, a hearty mix of engine notes that will keep you reaching for the redline. Ferrari mentions an electric wind stop to allow for normal conversations, but who’s talking when you have this mechanical aria? The high-revving V-8 features direct-fuel injection and a flat-plane crankshaft, pumping out 557 horsepower until the little flaps in the front intakes fold flat, then it rises up to its full 562. It boasts Pininfarina’s aerodynamically sculpted lines, another one of its enchanting features.

An open-top F12 has been on the minds of the blogosphere as though it were a certainty that a drop-top were in the works despite history not offering such a conclusion. After all, the Superamerica and the SA Aperta were rather unconventional convertibles, and besides, who needs more? The most powerful and fastest Ferrari road car outside of LaFerrari is the F12 Berlinetta. Ferrari points to a lap time of one minute and 23 seconds around the factory’s Fiorano test track, seconds ahead of the Enzo Ferrari. Compared to the car it replaces, the 599 GTB Fiorano, the F12 is smaller in all dimensions and lighter by about 150 pounds. The engine, a 6262-cubic-centimeter, 65-degree V-12, sits deeper in the chassis than the previous coupé, lowering the car’s center of gravity by around one inch. It’s an award-winning power plant that bests the best from the raging bull while offering an unrelenting surge of acceleration. The engine note, a glorious triumph of old-school Italian methodology, is pumped right into the cabin. Swapping gears with rapidity, it sprints to 62 miles per hour in 3.1 seconds and tops out in excess of 210. These are extreme capabilities, but many 599 owners are daily drivers, so the F12 offers a level of comfort and sophistication suited for day-to-day engagement. And when those track days beckon, an impressive list of control systems bring out the very best from one of Ferrari’s greats, leaving us to ask, “who needs a convertible?”

ou balked at the Prius in 2001. You snickered at the Tesla in 2008. Now, you’re clamoring for not just a Ferrari, but the Ferrari with battery power. The first Ferrari with hybrid technology just happens to be the most provocative, representing a new era of exotics that are made more efficient through electrical motors. We know 330 grams of carbon dioxide for every kilometer may not pique the interest of most automotive enthusiasts, but it was a number proudly promoted by Ferrari when it unveiled the Ferrari Enzo’s long-awaited successor. With Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) rising in the United States and the European Union looking at new rules to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from passenger vehicles, even a division as small and as niche as Ferrari has to look at ways to become more environmentally friendly. To put the new number into perspective, the Aventador LP700-4 is rated at 398, and the 84

Prius scores an 89. Even more telling, the Ferrari Enzo emitted 545 grams. While a limited run of 499 units (perhaps it is saving the 500th unit for the pope as it did with the 400th Enzo) may not have a huge effect on the overall state of the environment, a small production run allows Ferrari to experiment with new technological solutions that will filter down to the rest of the lineup. In this case, it is a system derived from its F1 Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS), called the Hybrid Kinetic Energy Recovery System (HY-KERS). It started with the 6.3-liter V-12 also found in the F12. In the LaFerrari, the engine has been tweaked to produce more high-end grunt, relying on the electric motor’s torque for more of the low-to-mid-range power. The result is another 1,000 rpm and an additional 59 ponies to play with. Or, to be more specific, 788 horsepower at an amazing 9,250 rpm. That electric motor also contributes 161 horsepower to the total output, equaling 949 horsepower. The electric motor’s battery pack is attached to the floor of the chassis,

channels its energy through the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and is recharged while braking as in a normal hybrid. Ferrari will even redirect what it deems unnecessary torque, as can happen in corners, away from the rear wheels to be converted into electrical energy for the battery cells. The result is performance levels unmatched by any other Ferrari as confirmed by a lap time at Fiorano of one minute and 20 seconds. That’s five seconds faster than the Enzo and three seconds faster than the F12 Berlinetta, making the LaFerrari the fastest road car in the Italian brand’s history. Other notable performance statistics include 0-60 mph in fewer than three seconds, 0-124 in fewer than seven seconds and a top speed in excess of 217 mph. FORD MUSTANG GT500 It’s hard to know what Ford wants to do more with the GT500, trounce the Camaro or take a good shot at the Corvette. Or, maybe it’s both. It’s the last model to come with Carroll Shelby’s official approval, and we have a feeling he would be happy with the outcome. It’s a tire burner, offering up massive amounts of twist through a 5.8-liter engine. Starting with the 5.4-liter aluminum-block V-8 found in the last GT500, SVT bored out the pistons and slapped on a supercharger to create a monstrous, 662-horsepower motor. Enough cannot be said about its drag-strip-calling qualities, but that’s not to say the GT500 is a one-trick pony (such as the National Hot Rod Association-certified Cobra Jet). SVT-designed electronically adjustable dampers and a limited-slip differential help lay the power down in corners. Downforce-generating add-ons keep it pinned to the track and Recaro seats hold you snuggly in place. This is a Mustang that revels in the straights while looking to the corners ahead. We’re sure Mr. Shelby would have thrown it against the best Camaros and Corvettes.

On February 9 at the Naval Airstrip in Lemoore, Califorina, the Venom GT reached 265.7 mph in a mere two miles. An impressive feat, considering it took the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport nearly 5 miles to reach such speeds. Sure, the Veyron reached 267.8 mph when modified beyond factory settings. But one may think that, given the same long strip of asphalt, the Venom GT’s 1,244 horsepower, 1,155 foot-pounds of torque, twin-turbocharged V-8 would leave the Veyron SS eating its vortex of dust with only half the track. However, the Venom GT already set the Guinness® WORLD RECORD this year for Fastest Accelerating Production Car in the World after sprinting from 0-100 mph in a quick 5.6 seconds, and from 0-200 mph in a breathtaking 14.51 seconds. Hennessey Performance has certainly come a long way since being crowned King with the Hennessey Venom 1000 Twin Turbo Viper they entered in the 2007 ROAD & TRACK “Speed Kings” competition, certainly an unexpected outcome with the Veyron in the game. Afterwards, John Hennessey decided to explore options for making their King into a God. The outcome: a redesigned Lotus Elise/Exige body with a Hennessey transformed 427-cubic-inch 7.0-liter LS-series Corvette V-8. This combination of power and weight was exactly what Hennessey needed with his good ‘ole motto of “one horsepower for every kilo of weight.” The result certainly did not disappoint, breaking a world record and leaving its tire squealing mark in history. Bugatti had better look out; John Hennessey and his team are coming for the title. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

ICON BRONCO In 1966, Ford created the now well-missed Bronco, which trampled competition until it was replaced in 1996 by the Ford Expedition. But, the boys over at ICON refuse to allow this legend to die. They’ve taken the classic body of a Bronco and transformed it into a modern-day off-road monster. With the Ford Mustang GT’s Coyote 5.0-liter V-8 pushing 412 horsepower through a standard Aisin-Wamer five-speed manual transmission, power and fun are inevitable. ICON has also equipped the Bronco with a Dynatrac Dana 60/40, non-slip differential and an Atlas II 4X4 transfer case. What does all this give you? A crawl ratio of 87:1 and the chance to laugh at the boys in lifted Chevys stuck in a mud pit. Truly unexpected performance from a fantastic classic.

ICON CJ3B For some, performance and efficiency are key. To meet that need, ICON began rebuilding flat-fender Willys-Overland Jeeps to recreate a short wheelbase SUV with the power capabilities and maneuverability to go just about anywhere. They call it the ICON CJ3B. With coil-over-shock suspension at every corner and Rubicon axel assemblies, this World War II veteran is ready for any terrain. To pull this Willys along, ICON gave it a fuel injected 2.4-liter VVT ECOTEC I4 from GM to keep the weight down and the efficiency up. However, ICON knows performance should never be sacrificed for efficiency. This GM engine gives you an impressive 210 horsepower and 195 foot-pounds of torque, preparing these Willyses to have their fighting chance for another World War.

ICON FJ The ICON FJ is a small SUV built for anything, anyone and anywhere. You choose between four models of any color with two different packages to fit your lifestyle. No matter the choice, you’ll find the same performance we’ve all come to expect from ICON. Using Dynatrac Dana 60/40 differentials and a parttime Axel II transfer case, this short-wheel-base prodigy is anything but incapable of playing with the big dogs. Under the hood, you’ll find an unexpected: LSseries, fuel injected 5.3-liter aluminum V-8 boasting 350 horsepower and 350 foot-pounds of torque. To bolster up durability, most of the body and exhaust system have been crafted in stainless steel and coated to ensure your FJ outlives anything in your driveway. 2014 Exotic Car Buyers Guide
JAGUAR F-TYPE V-8 S The all-new sporty F-type continues the lineage of the track-capable Jaguars of the ’50s and ’60s, following the C-, D- and E-Types, at the very least, in alphabetical order, and finally fulfilling the badge of an ’80s project and 2000 concept that never came to fruition. As a result, it shows similarities to the well-loved XKE, even though the last two-seat Jaguar was the XJ-S. In its most potent trim, the F-Type acquires the big-boy, 5.0-liter V-8 from its kin, but little brother status regulates it to a bit fewer horsepower. Keep in mind that it still has about 300 or so fewer pounds to move and two extra gears to work with, resulting in a 0–60 time that betters the XKRs. It also packs some snazzy performance goodies, such as an active electronic differential and an active exhaust, but its real mission has shone through thanks to the absence of electric-assisted steering, a near 50/50 weight distribution and massive 15-inch brake rotors. This is Jaguar made for track days, just like its alphabetized forebears.
JAGUAR XFR-S The Jaguar XFR-S is a product of its environment, building on the performance of the XFR by acquiring the go-fast bits of its stablemates to create an even more focused product. It serves as a combination of four-seat cruiser and track-ready bruiser, competing against the likes of BMW’s M5 and Mercedes’s E63. It shares its savage-sounding engine with the XKR-S, but unlike the XKR-S, it drives the rear wheel through a new eight-speed automatic transmission that debuted in the F-type. It’s dubbed “QuickShift,” and whether hyperbolically named or not, it promises to recognize corners, hold gears and blip rpms like the best of the dual-clutch variety. In conjunction with the new drivetrain, Jaguar upgraded the suspension and exhaust and recalibrated the stability control system. As a result of these upgrades, the 0–60 time is down to 4.4 seconds in the XFR-S, compared to 4.7 in the XFR, and the top-speed limit is raised to a 186. The higher top speed will come into play with the additional aerodynamic pieces, including a front splitter, rear diffuser and trunk lid spoiler.

JAGUAR XKR-S GT Even though the F-type is getting all the attention, Jaguar already has a powerful coupé/convertible with E-type aspirations and two-seats’ worth of usable room: the XKR. We like the XKR, love the XKR-S and can’t wait to see the new XKR-S GT. This new variant more than any other returns the brand to the days when Sir William Lyons built automobiles focused on performance, agility, and driver involvement. It brings the already track-capable XKR-S coupé closer to full-blown race-car credentials. It features noticeable and extensive aerodynamic changes—including a visually dominating boy-racer rear wing—as well as a stiff set of height-adjustable, adaptive dampers and carbon-ceramic brakes. All combined, the XKR-S GT inspires a more connected feel with improved downforce and braking performance, the tools of the trade on track days. All of this comes in addition to the XKR-S’s snarling, 542-horsepower V-8 engine. Initial production will be limited to just 30 cars for North America, all of which will be available in Polaris White.
JAGUAR XJL ULTIMATE Don’t fret over any confusion you may have over the various XJ designations; they follow neither those of the XJs of yore nor the range’s other models. Gone are the days of the Super V-8 and Vanden Plas (Daimler in Europe). The Portfolio has moved downmarket, and a midlevel, quasi-performance Supercharged variant has been added. Even the new-for-2014, 542-horsepower XJR is better aligned, in terms of hardware and price, with company’s R-S range, but the base, 500-horsepower performance model is called the SuperSport, leaving a hole in the naming convention if it were suddenly to jump up to the XJR-S. Then there is the premier trim level: the XJL Ultimate. Being an XJL, it offers nearly five more inches of rear seat legroom but kicks it up a notch with two individual reclining rear chairs with massage and heating/cooling functions. In addition, each rear passenger is entertained by not one, but two screens in front of them, an eight-inch LCD and an iPad. With a keyboard tray and footrests thrown in, we’ll just call this Jaguar awesome.

The $1.7-million Agera R is one of the world’s most expensive cars, but it pales in comparison to the Agera S Hundra, which celebrates ten years of the Swedish brand and its 100th model with a special one-off package featuring pure gold inlays. It went for an amazing $4.2 million in Singapore. It’s just another record to put under the Agera’s belt, which now includes the quickest 0–186–0 mph time ever verified, plus a slew of unofficial high-speed achievements performed in the Agera R. While the new Agera S is setting price records, it isn’t going to be stealing any of the Agera R’s speed records. And that’s because it doesn’t get access to the beneficial qualities of E85 biofuel. It’s that fuel’s higher octane rating and cooling abilities that give the Agera R its 1,140 horsepower, but the Agera S’s 1,030-horsepower is still quite extreme, and well more than the 960 horsepower of the base Agera. You may have noticed the slightly inflated horsepower figures above for the Agera and Agera R. That’s due to a number of changes for 2014, the other big one being a third shock absorber that connects the right and left wheels. It is designed to cancel out the negative effects of the anti-roll bar, and reduce squat under hard acceleration. This allowed engineers to actually lower the spring rate without affecting the car’s handling abilities. We wouldn’t say this extreme exotic is starting to look like a hyper GT, but you are getting more for the money.

From its voracious V-12 engine to eye-transfixing styling, the Aventador Roadster is the epitome of conspicuous consumption, a term coined in Thorstein Veblen's satirical treatise on pecuniary emulation titled “Theory of the Leisure Class.” The roofless LP700-4 does, after-all, offer a clear view of whomever is inside, giving passersby ample clearance to covet the owner's station—or just see if they’re wearing a wedding band. Is it any wonder that convertible supercars often outsell their coupé counterparts two to one, or that the Aventador Roadster has already raked in 15 months’ worth of orders? Gone is the flimsy fabric roof of the Murciélago Roadster, replaced with a twopiece carbon-fiber unit. It guarantees near coupé levels of stiffness despite each piece weighing just 13 pounds. They get stored in the front luggage compartment, where they will most likely stay, unless confronted with a random thunderstorm. Forget the who’s who in the driver’s chair and peer through the rear glass down to the V-12. It’s the same unit in the base coupé. It doesn’t get the extra 20 horsepower as in the limited-edition LP720-4 Anniversario, but it has only an extra 111 pounds. Where the powertrain does differ is the new stop-and-start system, which shuts the engine off when stopped and fires it back up in as little as 180 milliseconds. It helps reduce fuel consumption by seven percent, which is not enough for most to notice, but that’s why you have the open top.

2014 Exotic Car Buyers Guide
As we wait for the 2017 Urus, the second coming of the Lamborghini SUV, and next year’s yet-to-be-released replacement for the Gallardo, rumored to be called the Deimos, a Greek god of “terror,” we have another special, high-performance derivative that pays tribute to the Blancpain Super Trofeo racecar. If it seems familiar, that’s because it is. It features many of the same components found on the LP570-4 SuperTrofeo Stradale that came before it, and the LP570-4 Blancpain that came before that. Squadra Corse refers to a new department within Lamborghini that manages all motorsport activities, enticing new owners and seasoned racers to compete within the Lamborghini marque, home to the only one-make all-wheel-drive series. As you would expect, the Gallardo Squadra Corse is very close to the racecar. They share the same rear wing, achieving, under the best aerodynamic conditions, three times the downforce of the Gallardo LP560-4, but it also slows the car’s top speed down to 199 mph. Another element taken directly from the racecar is the quick-release, removable engine hood. Propulsion for the Gallardo LP570-4 Squadra Corse comes courtesy of the 562-horsepower V-10 that first appeared in the new Superleggera. The Squadra Corse has a dry weight of just 2,954 pounds, also the same as the Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera. So, performance is on-par with the Superleggera, dashing to 62 miles per hour in 3.4 seconds and 124 coming 6.8 seconds later. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

2014 Exotic Car Buyers Guide
Let the expletives fly, if not for the cool outrageous design, then for the $4,000,000 price. The Lamborghini Veneno’s styling is about as extreme as you can get outside of a Hot Wheels factory. Want to feel young again? One look at the Lamborghini Veneno and you’ll want to hang a framed poster of it on your wall next to your wife’s Thomas Kinkade painting. However with a production run of just three cars, any childhood-like excitement turns slowly into sobering reality: a poster is as close as you may ever get to this car. It celebrates Lamborghini’s 50th anniversary but bears no resemblance to any of the cars from Lamborghini’s first ten years. The Veneno utilizes the Aventador’s carbon-fiber monocoque and carbon fiber for all of the bodywork. Despite its similarities to Lamborghini’s more common model, the Veneno weighs 275 fewer pounds than the LP700-4 and is a bit more powerful, creating 740 horsepower compared to the LP700-4’s 690. All three Venenos will be finished in a metallic gray color, with the three customer cars featuring a single color of the Italian flag: one in red, one in white, and one in green. Then, there is the name. Lamborghini says it comes from “one of the strongest and most aggressive fighting bulls ever,” a bull that famously killed a matador in 1914. Unfortunately, this tale seems to be as much a fantasy as our hopes of owning one.

LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER SPORT The Range Rover Sport has come a long way since its release in 2005 as the little brother to the Range Rover. This year it’s returned, bigger and with more technology than ever, bringing the new Sport much closer to its big brother. While we are excited, it’s somewhat confusing to tell them apart. You get the same engine, assuming you choose the supercharged V-8 option, and the same cutting-edge technology wrapped around an aluminum body. You get the same Terrain Response® 2 system, Active Cornering and Positive Torque systems, towing capabilities and many other features Land Rover prides itself on. But, the same aspects that made the Sport a huge hit for sales in the first place are still present. It’s lighter, more maneuverable, quicker and at a more comprehendible price than its big brother. And, unlike the larger Range Rover, you have the option of downsizing your engine to a smaller LR-V-6 without sacrificing the Autobiography trim. Of course, we prefer the old “go big or go home” theory, so while some may choose the V-6, we’ll stick to the 510 horsepower monster.

LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER AUTOBIOGRAPHY Land Rover has remained a symbol of top-of-the-line SUVs since its start, and right when the competition thinks they’ve caught up, Land Rover takes another step forward. With the Terrain Response® 2 system, the Range Rover now reads road conditions 500 times a second to ensure outrageous handling capabilities. The Range Rover has an all-aluminum body to make it lighter, more fuel efficient and safer for everyone inside. The supercharged 5.0-liter LR-V8 engine gives this luxury off-road machine the performance every little boy dreams of. The King of Rovers has the ability to go from 0-60 in just 5.1 seconds and has the towing capability needed to haul up to 7,716 pounds. A Trailer Stability Control keeps the vehicle steady while towing anything on any terrain, and a newly designed suspension improves the cutting-edge feel of the ride. With the Autobiography trim you get best of quality in about every aspect. Improved interior with more luxurious leather accompanied by an improved sound system changes the way you travel, and a bright chrome grill changes the way you’re seen traveling. LEXUS IS-F The IS-F is a world-wide sport sedan favorite that can call the Fuji Speedway home. It was designed by a small group of engineers that Lexus claims were just building “a car these serious enthusiasts wanted to drive.” To build such a car, they tested and calibrated every inch according to the powerful demands of the Fuji Speedway in Japan. Such demands call for a 5.0-liter V-8 engine boasting 416 horsepower and 371 foot-pounds of torque, meaning this luxury sport sedan will take you from 0–60 mph in just 4.6 seconds, and carry you all the way up to 170 mph. Brembo rotors and Lexus caliber were also tested on the racetrack and merged with safety features, such as sensors and an available pre-collision system. However, the inside of the IS-F is more luxurious than one might expect. Leather trimmed sport seats and aluminized dash trim give way to a sporty, but crafted, look inside. And, with the available Lexus Enform system, your dashboard can even become your app filled smart phone with online compatibility. A car built from the asphalt of a racetrack has never been crafted with so much luxury.
LOTUS EVORA SPORT Minimalism, a tactile experience and balance are the basis for the Lotus spirit as Colin Chapman first employed them when he formed the company in 1952. The Evora is the latest, and, for the U.S.’s street, currently only, example. It starts with a chassis and central tub comprised of aluminum. The light and rigid structure works in tandem with mid-engine layout, Bilstein dampers and Eibach springs for an enjoyable combination of performance and grand-touring compliance. Designed primarily for two, a 2+2 configuration is optional. Whether sticking with the rear shelf or opting for seats, the back may primarily serve as a spot for the weekend's luggage. Delivering even more attitude, the forced-induction power plant in the S delivers 345 horsepower, can now be ordered with either the six-speed manual or the six-speed automatic transmission and muscles up to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. In addition, the sportier model offers an active exhaust system and a larger rear splitter.

LOTUS EXIGE V-6 CUPAGE It's not that you can't buy the new Lotus Exige in the United States and make a couple of quick blasts down the street, it just wouldn't be legal. Because of airbag regulations, the road-going Elise and Exige will mostly be left for the lucky Europeans, leaving us with a track-only special that will be brought to the United States in limited numbers. It's too bad, too, because the Exige is better than ever. Yes, it weighs more mainly because it adopts the Evora's Toyota-derived, supercharged 3.5-liter V-6, but it provides an extra 100 horsepower for moving only an extra few hundred pounds. In other words, performance is up, and the 0–60 is down. In the track machine, it has a Dynamic Performance Management (DPM) system offering selectable drive modes, including Touring, Sport and Race. In addition, it has a multi-adjustable suspension, full FIA-approved roll cage, fire extinguisher, carbon-fiber racing seat, six-point harness and a quick-release steering column. Completing the package is an aggressive, aerodynamically optimized front splitter and rear spoiler and diffuser.
MARUSSIA B2 The B2 is Marussia’s evolved, more aggressively styled supercar made to take the entire company to a new level. It has made its presence known at more than just competitions, forging partnerships with video games, like the “Need for Speed” series. Though it has most of the same specifications as the older B1, including the 2.8-liter turbocharged V-6 and carbon fiber chassis, the B2 has been designed to show a “wild side,” as Marussia would call it. They wittily molded an ‘M’ into the face of the car, certainly giving it a more distinct, savage look that turns heads and allows for even more air scoops and functional grills for intakes. For the track, the B2, is equipped with adjustable suspension made by the German brand KW, whom Marussia has partnered with. The B2 is certainly a powerful start to what could be the beginning of a big future.

2014 Exotic Car Buyers Guide
It’s a whole new Maserati, with high aspirations of selling 50,000 units a year within the next two years. The champion of its cause is the Maserati Ghibli. It’s the manufacturer’s first foray into the mid-sized sedan market, and more importantly, it moves the brand downmarket and gives the (once) small niche manufacturer a way to compete directly with the high-volume Germans. The Ghilbi shares a platform and a similar look with the new Quattroporte. Despite the literally visible link, the Ghibli’s wheelbase is almost eight inches shorter than the Quattroporte’s, with an overall length that is 11 1/2 inches shy of its brethren. They share a new Ferrari-derived powertrain, a turbocharged 3.0liter V-6 that produces a stout 404 horsepower in the Ghibli S. The powerful engine nets all-wheel drive, thus the Q4 designation. The engineers obviously had rear-wheel intentions, keeping 100 percent of the torque at the back in normal driving, but an electronically controlled multi-plate wet clutch in the transfer case can divert up to 50 percent to the front. Thanks to a standard limited-slip differential, an optional adaptive suspension and staggered 18-inch tires, it rarely needs to transfer more than 35 percent. With the rip-roaring engine, all-wheel drive system and ventilated, cross-drilled front rotors, any set of switchback turns will make for some lively fun. Six thousand units is a far cry from 50,000, but the Ghibli puts Maserati on the right path. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

MASERATI GRANTURISMO SPORT Sliding in-between the base GranTurismo and sportier GranTurismo MC, the new GranTurismo Sport adds just another flavor to the lineup. It adopts many of the MC’s trackoriented improvements while retaining its grand-touring feel. The MC and Sport both share an aggressive front grill with a distinguished chin spoiler, but the MC takes things further with cooling ducts just past the front wheels that melt into the side skirts, a pair of heat-dissipating slots on the front hood, a redesigned rear bumper, and an exposed-carbon-fiber spoiler. In addition to the front fascia, the two share an engine, a revised version of the 4.7-liter V-8 that produces 10 more horsepower, for a total of 453. The engine is connected to an automatic transmission that has fully replaced the automated manual in the United States. The adaptive Skyhook transmission in the Sport is a little more stiffly sprung, but it is accompanied with seats that are a little softer. Together, they reach a middle ground, splitting the difference between the grand-touring base car and track-eyeing MC.
MASERATI GRANTURISMO CONVERTIBLE MC It’s the convertible’s turn for the Maserati Corse treatment, adopting many of the same alterations that were made to the coupé just 18 months ago. It’s fitted with the higher-output, 453-horsepower engine tied to a faster-shifting transmission with Auto and Manual modes. The two modes each pair with Normal or Sport programming. There is also a designated Ice mode. Setting it farther apart are a host of cosmetic changes that go past the front-end alterations and are also found on the GranTurismo Convertible Sport. These include ducts behind each of the front wheels to help cool the brakes and a pair of outlets high up on the hood to dissipate engine heat. Around back are a carbon-fiber spoiler and a redesigned rear bumper with exhaust outlets residing closer to the center. Maserati tested the waters with a two-seat MC coupé in Europe, but it saw what happened to the Continental Supersports in the U.S. and decided to retain the rear chairs here. In fact, it went the total opposite direction, offering a 1/2 of an inch more rear legroom thanks to redesigned front seats. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

The Maserati Quattroporte is all about changing your misconstrued conceptions. It’s grown in all directions, yet, thanks to the liberal use of aluminum, weighs 200 fewer pounds. It also comes with a smaller V-8 power plant, but creates nearly 100 more horsepower and loads more of on-demand torque. These seemingly contradictory changes may appear to be part of a subtle revision, but the recognizable form of the 2014 Quattroporte actually hides a nearly complete overhaul. Let’s go back to that V-8. It’s a Ferrari-built, small, 3.8-liter unit that makes liberal use of forced induction to create 523 horsepower and 479 foot-pounds of torque, with an over-boost function that cranks the torque up to 524. As a result, performance is sprightly. The zero-to-60 takes 4.7 seconds, 0.3 of a second quicker than the previous Sport GT S. This makes the new Quattroporte the quickest four-door in the brand’s history. In addition, it’s finally cracked 190 mph, which puts it beyond the capabilities of many of its competitors’ limiters. The long wheelbase is befitting a four-door cruiser for the world’s elite, offering plenty of legroom and luggage space, a classy mash of colors and materials and a ride that never punishes its passengers. Maserati is determined to change the way people feel about the Italian brand as it sets its sights on scores of new customers from the United States and China. As we said, it’s changing people’s preconceived notions. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

McLaren
P1
million-dollar, carbon-fiber-bodied McLaren prototype known as the P1 aspires to change the supercar world. If it feels as though you are suffering from déjà vu, you are not alone. We saw this, in the early ‘90s, with McLaren’s mighty F1. Back then, such companies as Jaguar and Bugatti were vying for supercar supremacy through the title of the world’s fastest production car. With that title currently held by the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, McLaren has the much loftier ambition of becoming the world’s best driver’s car. But it faces stiff competition from Ferrari, which uses that exact same verbiage for the LaFerrari. After all, it is the Ferrari. Taking the reins where the F1 left off, the P1 utilizes an advanced combination of twin turbochargers and electric motor muscle. It starts with 12C’s 3.8liter forced-induction V-8, an engine designed entirely in-house with dry-sump lubrication and a low-positioned flat-plane crankshaft. The turbochargers are new and run at 20 psi compared to 17 psi in the 12C. With a few other tweaks for cooling and durability, the already amazing output of 616 horsepower has been raised even further, creating an astonishing 727 horsepower at 7,500 rpm. But wait; there’s more. To drive the car directly for up to six miles, it draws on the power of a single electric motor, utilizing its 176 horsepower and 192 foot-pounds of torque to fill in the torque gaps during shifts, to drive the car directly for up to six miles, or for an explosion of power by way

3 of the Instant Power Assist System (IPAS) button. The amount of power provided by IPAS really depends on how much electrical energy is left in the battery pack. Located just behind the passenger cabin are six modules, composed of 324 battery cells. Unlike so many hybrids, the P1 does not use kinetic energy from the braking system to recharge the battery. Instead, it captures energy normally wasted as the engine decelerates, say when lifting off the throttle, or it can be recharged directly by the V-8 engine with the press of the Charge button when the car is at a standstill. At its best, a full 903 horsepower and 664 footpounds of torque is at the driver’s disposal. This power transfers through a seven-speed dual-clutch

transmission to the rear wheels, and performance is nothing short of immense: 0-62 mph in less than three seconds, 0-124 in less than seven seconds, and 0-186 in less than 17 seconds. For comparison, the F1 takes 3.2 seconds, 9.4 seconds, and 22 seconds, respectively, for the same jaunts. The one place the F1 still rules supreme is top speed, where the P1 is limited to 217 miles per hour, the F1 can reach 231. The one place we hope the P1 and F1 really diverge is in the number of units sold. McLaren had hoped to sell 300 F1s until the supercar market took a plunge, leaving it with just 64 road-going cars before production stopped. McLaren hopes to sell even more P1s—375—and must contend with some stiff competition from Porsche and Ferrari.

It was fun while it lasted. The 510-horsepower, limited-edition, Black Series CClass was a one-year special. Actually, to be more specific, it was more like a 90car special in the United States, and we are sure it sold out quickly. All the more reason for Mercedes-Benz to inject its performance addicts with one more dose. You know, something to wean them off the track and back on the street. For that, we have the Edition 507. It even looks like the Black Series thanks to its two hood outlets. It borrows the pistons, connecting rods and crankshaft from the SLS to increase output of the 6.2-liter engine to nearly Black Series values. It also carries new lighter compound brakes to bring that extra power to a stop. In terms of straight-line performance, it’s neck and neck with the Black Series, with a zeroto-60 time of 4.1 seconds. But from there, it’s all C63. Inside you find luxury and comfort, without depriving you of a sport feel. To create such a happy median Mercedes-Benz gives the driver a 3-spoke performance steering wheel with AMG shift paddles. Nappa leather on the new redesigned bucket seats, perforated leather on the dash and aluminum trim ensure you never forget that you are driving some of the best in luxury. For comfort on both the street and on the track, you’re equipped with Mercedes-Benz’s Electronic Stability Program (ESP). This system has been adjusted specifically for the aggressive performance of the Edition 507 and given the first ever 3-stage ESP sport function. It may not be a Black Series, but it certainly compares without compromise. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

MERCEDES-BENZ CL65 AMG Rumor is the CL-Class won’t be here much longer. It’s being incorporated into the S-Class line, adopting the new S-Class’s threads, technologies and other advancements, but retaining the design of a long two-door. It will take the name of S-Class Coupé, standing as one of a variety of new body styles that also includes a Maybach-replacing limo; it may even serve as the base for an S-Class convertible. Until we see what they have in store, the CL soldiers with neither all-wheel drive nor a road-sensing suspension. That’s to say, it’s the same over-the-top delight, a low-volume, grand-touring coupé that’s big on front passenger space and even bigger on torque. Like the SL, it spools up an unabashed 738 foot-pounds of torque for extreme speeds and bragging rights. You don’t need option boxes when everything is standard. Infrared night-vision system, rear-view camera, crosswind stabilization, active suspension, it’s all there, working with greater levels of wood and leather trim and a massive V-12 engine for relaxed, high-speed cruising at its finest. Well, until it comes as an S-Class.
MERCEDES-BENZ CLA45 AMG AMG is going down an all-new road with a whole-new car. Despite this being a true AMG, it is like nothing we have ever seen. Blame the brand for keeping our expectations set on big V-8s driving the rear wheels and then delivering a small four-cylinder with a front-drive bias. Based on the CLA250, the 45 captures all the AMG styling cues, with spoilers, inlets and outlets in all the right places. The all-new car features an all-new engine, a small but ravenous power plant stuffed with 26 pounds per square inch of exhaust-gas-compressed air. It creates an amazing 355 horsepower, which can send the 3,500-pound coupé to 60 in just 4.5 seconds. The CLA250 is front-wheel drive, a testament to where Mercedes is trotting with its new car. Thankfully, the CLA45 is not. It features Mercedes’s 4matic four-wheel drive system, which still sends power to the front wheels normally but is capable of sending up to 50 percent of the power to the rear wheels if slippage is detected. The only transmission is the seven-speed dual-clutch, one of the few things it shares with the other AMGs.

MERCEDES-BENZ CLS63 AMG S With its E-Class roots, the CLS is following the other 2014 models into a new era at AMG. It’s not only hard-core performance. That can be saved for the Black Series cars. AMGs sit as the highest trim, appealing to every driver that simply wants the best, even if they aren’t looking for an insane amount of horsepower. That’s not to say it still won’t offer an insane amount of power. From the whoosh of the twin turbochargers to the stampede of 575 ponies, the CLS and other AMGs are far from mundane. But, many are now putting their power down through an all-wheel-drive system, adding a little civility to what has been a crop of extremisms. Instead of shredding the rear tires with nearly 600 foot-pounds of torque, the CLS now sends 33 percent of the engine’s power to the front, aiding acceleration and traction at the cost of smoky rear-wheel peel outs. It’s actually a better fit for the swoopy four-door coupé, which is more likely to make an impression at the valet stand of some gala event than intimidate muscle cars at the drag strip.
MERCEDES-BENZ E63 AMG S 4MATIC There was a day when you could actually infer the size of the Mercedes engine by the numbers on the rear decklid, making it easy for even slight aficionados to jabber off the seemingly intimate details of every whip that drove down the road. O.K., it was only three years ago. Now, the 550s have 4.6-liter engines, the 400s have 3.5s, and the 63s have 5.5s. We’d ask what the world was coming to if we weren’t so tickled with the changes. The new-for2014 E-Class is a prime example. The AMG variant, which went on a one-model-year hiatus for 2013, exchanged its 516-horsepower 6.2-liter V-8 for a 550-horsepower, twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8, despite retaining the 63 name. Then there’s the accompanying S, which replaces the AMG Performance Package and raises output to 577 horsepower. To help lay these higher levels of power down, the new E63 and other AMG vehicles have all-wheel drive as standard equipment. It even says so right there on the decklid, with an easy-to-decipher 4matic badge.

MERCEDES-BENZ G63 AMG 6 X 6 It was passed off as a box for A-listers obsessed with appearances until Mercedes stretched it out, raised it up, and added another set of wheels. Now, it’s the baddest thing on six tires. Straight from the Australian Outback , the G63 6 x 6 is a civilian concept with military roots. Mercedes says it will build some, keep them in Europe, and ask for some major coinage. Its twin-turbo 5.5-liter engine sends 581 foot-pounds of torque to all six wheels, 30 percent to the front and rear and 40 percent to the middle. The 8,500-pound SUV’s six-second sprints to 60 may impress, but its tire-pressure control systems, low-range, and differential locks should make its off-road mission clear.

MERCEDES-BENZ ML63 AMG Talk about exhilarating. Sending a 5,000-pluspound SUV down the road with a set of two turbochargers spooling up a full 550 horsepower and 560 foot-pounds of torque is a retina-dilating, nerveracking, knuckle-reddening experience; you’ll want to do it again and again! Hitting 60 miles per hour from a standstill in 4.7 seconds never felt so fast, made legal speeds seem so dangerous and induce such police paranoia. It probably doesn’t help that you know it can do 174. Yes, the AMG sport ‘ute is fun, but in no way does it take away from the car’s glitz or interior comfort. It’s civilized, and if a reminder of civilized society doesn’t help you to reel your lead-footed giddiness in, a combined 16 miles per gallon will.

MERCEDES-BENZ SLK55 AMG No matter which way you slice it, the SLK is the baby SLS. Size. Price. Power. Styling. They all just appear to be shrunken versions of MercedesBenz’s flagship supercar. It’s not a novel approach. The first SLK stood out because of its roof mechanism; it was the first of the hardtop convertibles that became so popular. But for its first encore, it spiced things up with some styling cues from the SLR. Now, in its third iteration, it miniaturizes the SLS. It has the speed, with a mid-four-second 0–60 sprint ,and it has the style, with its long hood, flat nose and prominent three-pointed star. But, it doesn’t have the price. We say having your car confused with one costing a third as much isn’t such a bad thing.

MERCEDES-BENZ S63 AMG 4MATIC With the demise of Maybach, Mercedes is set on using the all-new S-Class to fill-in the shoes of the long luxury limo. The AMG version isn’t just a limo; it’s a screaming fast one. The North American S-Class only comes in the longer wheelbase, which happens to be the same size as the outgoing car. But there is still an even longer car in store, the real limousine and the rest of the world will get a shorter one, also. The S63’s 664 foot-pounds of torque goes through a four-wheel-drive system as it quickly hits 60 in 3.9 seconds. Unlike the other S-Classes, the S63 doesn’t offer the spiffy new suspension that scans the road ahead and adjusts accordingly. It instead makes do with a normal set of adjustable dampers. It’s all wrapped in lightweight aluminum, shedding some 220 pounds compared to the outgoing car and forming an automobile with a simple grandeur, a prominence equal to that of the Maybach without being overdone. Inside, occupants are wrapped in a sensuous elegance that may be confused with that of some highbrow British brands. It’s an all-new S-Class, indeed.
MERCEDES-BENZ SL65 AMG When was the last time an AMG made you think WOW? If we told you the SL65 made 621 horsepower and 738 foot-pounds of torque, would that do it? With so many variants of the SL, it’s easy to pass them over without recognizing their grandeur. To put it in perspective, the SL65 is more expensive, has more cylinders and makes mounds more torque than the base Mercedes-Benz, the SLS flagship. The SL kind of looks like the SLS, too. But while the SLS is an iconic rebirth ready for the track, the SL is all grand-touring vehicle, eating up road miles as it cruises in the upper echelons of the speedometer. Its massive, 6.0-liter V-12 engine spools up a pair of exhaust-driven kompressors to create numbers worth an interjection-like reaction. Like all new SLs, it’s constructed entirely of aluminum to keep it light and nimble, a trait it shares with a few other cars, such as the Ferrari 458 Italia, Audi A8 and Tesla Model S. We know—WOW!

2014 Exotic Car Buyers Guide
Black Series just sounds menacing. It resonates through a pack of enthusiasts nearly as well as the wallow of those cars’ thunderous V-8s. It felt as though Mercedes was springing them on us, until we realized this is just the fifth one. But this isn’t your normal Black Series, unless we forget that the SLS was AMG’s first attempt at designing a car from the ground up. With performance at its roots, the SLS takes the crown for best power-to-weight ratio of any Black Series car. It’s down to 5.5 pounds per unit of horsepower and stands out as much for the loss of weight as the increase in power. It starts with the “AMG Lightweight Performance” strategy. It includes replacing the hood, drive-train components and other mechanical bits with carbon-fiber units. A fully revised valve train adds 39 horsepower to the already increased output of the SLS GT, for a total of 622. It betters the SL65 by one, and we doubt that was an accident. There’s more: The track has been increased by 0.8 of an inch in the front and 0.9 of an inch in the back, the transmission is installed 0.4 of an inch lower in the chassis, a new electronically controlled AMG rear differential replaces the mechanical variant and the entire suspension has been revamped for hooliganism. Wrapping it all up are flared fenders and carbon-fiber aerodynamic bits, but the large adjustable rear wing is an option. You don’t even have to fire up the engine to get people talking. Just whisper into the crowd, “Yep, it’s a Black Series.” www.duPontREGISTRY.com

MORGAN AERO COUPÉ A lot of emotion can be stirred up while looking at the Morgan Aero Coupé. Classic styling and modern day engineering come together with BMW performance to create a fun drive with comforting luxury most only dream of experiencing. Hidden away underneath the bonnet of the Aero Coupe is a 4.8-liter V-8 and a six-speed automatic or manual transmission, all built by BMW. Morgan crafted the Aero entirely of aluminum and treated it with chemical coating to ensure it lasts. Hand-polished ash hardwood from top to bottom inside the cockpit gives not only a delightful, classic feel but also provides the buyer with a variety of interior color options. To further you high-end relaxation, reclining seats inside the Aero are designed with pressure point comfort. While it may not appear so, the Aero is highly maneuverable and incredibly capable of going from 0–60 in 4.5 seconds and reaching a top speed of 170 mph because of its ultra-light body. On top of high-end performance, the Aero is shockingly efficient for its nature, getting a combined rating of 26 mpg. Classic styling has never been more impressive.
NISSAN GT-R TRACK EDITION One thing Nissan hasn’t done is allow its high-performance model to sit back on its haunches. Just when you think it’s gotten as fast as fast can get, another year passes, and it undergoes another round of small updates that prove it has yet to reach its limits. Forgiving the launch control system’s transmission-preserving r.p.m. reduction in 2010, it’s always better to wait for the next model year. For instance, horsepower has crept from 480 in 2009 up to today’s 545. Of course, there is a price to be paid for these improvements, literally, as the base sticker has inched from $78,000 to $99,000. While that’s sticker shock for some, Nissan is betting that others will be willing to pay more for a little more—and a little less. Limited to just 150 units, the GT-R Track Edition doesn’t get a dose of horsepower, but it does away with the back seat and adds a stiffer suspension, grippier seats and additional brake cooling. Best of all, it won’t get better next year.

NOBLE M600 The Noble M600 is a supercar unlike any other. Noble believes that today’s supercars have made driving too easy, and has re-imagined what a track car should be. They’ve stripped away computer components to make it lighter and to have it rely more on the capabilities of the driver. They’ve cut things down to the basics and created a fun little masterpiece out of a stainless steel frame and a body of carbon fiber deposits. A twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 made by Yamaha puts up to 650 bhp to the rear wheels and blasts you from 0-120 mph in 8.9 seconds. But don’t worry; with all that power, they didn’t remove the traction control. In fact, they felt traction control to be so necessary for safety, that, as found on missile controls for a fighter jet, the only way to turn it off is to flip up a switch and press the button. If 650 bhp is too much for you, you can always step it down with a knob in the center console giving you the choice of Road (450 bhp), Track (550 bhp) or Race (650 bhp). Finally, there’s a supercar for the real professionals.
PAGANI HUAYRA Starting life in 1999, the original Zonda is still identifiable in the new Revolucion; you just have to look past all the spoilers, splitters, juts and protrusions. For its second model, Pagani recreated the smooth form of the past in a new modern design without losing any of the aerodynamic efficiency. The Huayra modifies the angles of four aileron-like flaps at the front and rear and alters the car’s ride height to better utilize the air passing over. It does this in a variety of driving conditions by accessing information from the anti-lock braking system and engine-control unit on the car’s speed, yaw rate, lateral acceleration, steering angle and throttle position. This allows it to do such things as increase front drag during hard braking or reducing it when slicing through the wind on its way to tremendous speeds. Those speeds are due in no small part to the AMG-derived, twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12, a quick-shifting sequential gearbox, a full assortment of ducts and radiators for cooling, light carbonfiber bodywork and feeding the powertrain,

PAGANI ZONDA REVOLUCION The Huayra has set a Top Gear track record, been honored with numerous awards including our own and is getting ready to make its debut in the fourth edition of the Transformers movie franchise. But, it’s the Zonda that has raised the bar once again, equalizing the two supercars with wind-derived names. So as much as we love the 719-horsepower why-ra, the Zonda Revolucion proved in a final hurrah that it isn’t ready to play second fiddle just yet. Made for the track, the Zonda Revolucion adds 50 horsepower to the already potent, Mercedes-derived 6.0-liter V-12 engine from the Zonda R. This 800-horsepower whirlwind of rare lightweight metals doesn’t rely on an exemplary power-to-weight ratio alone. Shift times of the six-speed sequential transmission take just 20 milliseconds, or a third of the time required by some of Ferrari’s greats, and the exterior is home to a number of noticeable aerodynamics aids. These include new deflectors on the front apron, a vertical stabilizing fin that stretches down the rear hood and an automatically adjusting rear wing.
PORSCHE 918 SPYDER Since the loss of the Carrera GT in 2006, we’ve waited anxiously for a successor. The 918 Spyder is just that, only now it’s a hybrid of a different class. Using two electric motors and a 4.6-liter V-8 you’d think that it would be too heavy. In fact, at 3,616-3,715 pounds, you’d think it needs to shave off a whole thousand pounds. But, that’s actually nothing compared to what it could be, and seemingly makes no difference to the performance. A heart stopping 0-60 time of 2.8 seconds keeps you second guessing if you’re really even driving a hybrid. Porsche has designed the 918 to be one of the easiest track cars to drive. Electric assisted quick-ratio steering mated with a counter-steering system that angles the rear wheels up to 3° to give the perfect turn. The driver chooses from four different driving modes; the innovative E (electric)-mode, Hybrid mode, Sport Hybrid mode and an extra Sport Hybrid mode that is activating with a dangerous little red button in the center console to let out all the power on reserve. The 918 may be one of the most anticipated cars of the year.

ack in the 2012 guide, we predicted the new 991 911 would be available with “all-wheel drive in 2013, Turbo and GT3 trims by 2014, and in GT2 guise by 2015.” So far, we’re batting 1,000. Of course, there have been surprises. A special anniversary trim celebrates 50 years of the 911. And we would have never guessed the two 2014 releases would spell out the demise of the manual transmission, but when Porsche limits its superstars to the PDK, we know the H-gate is going the way of landlines and checkbooks. The writing has been on the wall. Automatics of the ‘90s sapped power and offered slow shifts, but technology soon surpassed the best of man, first with the rough shifting sequential manuals and now the dual-clutches. The worst part: it’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Take a fast jaunt in a PDK-equipped 911, and you won’t need one of Dr. Egon Spengler’s EEG skull caps to know that your eyes, ears and finger pads are being flooded with stimuli. The up and down shifts are there, even better placed than you yourself could have done and made with, what our senses can decipher only as, instantaneity. Besides, the rate of speed is so immense in the new 911 Turbo S that it’s probably better to just focus on the road, and not the tachometer. The Turbo just keeps getting faster and faster. The 3.8-liter horizontally opposed six started life in 2005 with 350 horsepower. Direct fuel injection, twin turbochargers and other upgrades bring us up to 560 horsepower just six short years later in the Turbo S. Porsche, which often downplays its performance

statistics, says it is capable of going from 0-60 in 2.9 seconds. That’s fast. Yet, the Turbo isn’t even about outright track performance like the GT cars. While we wait to see how it will handle the GT2 for 2015, we have the GT3. It’s based on the Carrera S (i.e., it is naturally aspirated and rearwheel drive), but while both offer 3.8 liters of displacement, the GT3’s engine has been totally reworked. It weighs 55 fewer pounds, makes 75 more horsepower and can run all the way up to a screaming 9,000-rpm redline. It sits lower, snaps off faster shifts, offers an assortment of aerodynamic aids, makes new strides with rear-wheel steering and, best of all, costs $181,100. Don’t get us wrong; that’s big money, but we predict you’ll want it anyway.

PORSCHE BOXSTER S Porsche says the new Boxster is lighter and faster as well as more fuel-efficient and agile. Sometimes it’s hard to know where the facts stop and the hyperbole begins. That is, until you drive one, and then you realize words aren’t doing enough. It comes courtesy of a completely new chassis, one that it shares with the 991. It offers a longer wheelbase, wider track, and lower stance. These things alone might make it a joy in the corners, but Porsche ensures the driver is taking full advantage of the car’s capabilities through torque vectoring and active suspension systems. The engines are slightly more powerful but 15 percent more efficient, and a very small part of that efficiency comes from electromechanical steering. The advent of electric steering throughout the Porsche range is a little dispiriting, but most won’t notice. The absolute best part of the new 981 Boxster is its styling. Sharing much with upcoming 2015 918 supercar, the Boxster finally looks all grown up, trading its bashful, sleek design lines for assertive, edgy adulthood, and that’s no exaggeration.
PORSCHE CAYENNE TURBO S Time is not always on your side, leaving you with a cold meal and a kiss goodnight when you walk in the door on those long days. The faster Cayenne Turbo S might not help you navigate rush-hour traffic any more quickly, but the time-space meld that accompanies every full-throttle burst in the 4,800-plus-pound rocket will surely leave you feeling as though you’re creating the type of particles physicists at CERN would go nuts over. Increasing the already potent output by 50 to 550 in the Turbo S, Porsche is once again playing the with laws that Newton and Einstein held so dear. The new muscle pushes the SUV to 60 in 4.5 seconds and works in tandem with active all-wheel drive and air suspension systems and an electronically controlled rear differential to put the power down in corners like a light-footed sports car. It can be ordered with the Sports Chrono Package, which measures and stores performance data including lap times. It’s the one verifiable way that the Cayenne plays with time.

PORSCHE CAYMAN S The Cayman has always been the underdog, offering graceful, suave control to anyone that gets to know the particulars of the mid-engine, light-footed Porsche. It’s fast, but it’s designed to never overtake the 911 on the track. It’s a little unfortunate, because the two are growing alike visually, but the 911 will always be engineered to perform a wee-bit better. In conjunction with this year’s redesign, the 3.4-liter F-6 now produces five more horsepower, which is still 25 fewer than the base 911. Despite the Cayman actually growing ever so slightly, the use of aluminum and other lightweight materials means it has 66 fewer pounds to move. The resulting 0–60 time of 4.4 seconds is a couple of ticks quicker than the outgoing model and on par with the last Cayman R. Carrying over is a choice of a dual-clutch or manual transmission. It’s one of the rare sports cars to offer the latter, so we’d say go with it, unless you absolutely need the best zero-to-60 time. But, if that were the case, you’d probably be saving up for the 911.
PORSCHE GT3 The 911 GT3 is a well known, iconic version of the 911 best known for its incredible abilities on the track. This year they’ve brought some new “traditions” to the table to, once again, raise the bar for track cars around the world. Porsche has introduced a new seven-speed variant of their venerable dual-clutch, which allows for dynamic gear shifts that change within milliseconds to give smooth, seemingly endless power. To prevent backpressure in the exhaust, the GT3 has been equipped with a larger exhaust system, keeping the noise down and the power output up. Above the PDK is an innovative new 3.8-liter flat-six engine that puts out 475 horsepower and redlines at a screaming 9,000 rpm. That sort of power inside of a car basically built around the Nurburgring racetrack can transform even amateur drivers into professionals. The GT3 has been engineered to ensure a sport feeling with every gear and every turn, and the wider front end with the improved wing on the rear make the new GT3 well recognized from a distance. Once again, Porsche fails to disappoint. We can’t wait to drive one. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

PORSCHE PANAMERA TURBO EXECUTIVE One hundred thousand units in three model years. The Panamera is doing well despite many of the original complaints about its form. It may be due to Porsche’s refusal to allow the Panamera to sit back on its laurels. In such a short time, it’s doubled its model offerings, expanding the line to include the higher-performance Turbo S, the purer GTS and the efficient Hybrid. It hasn’t stopped for 2014, when the line expands in a literal sense with the Executive trim. It stretches the already 16.5-foot sedan by another 5.9 inches, all of which goes to the rear cabin. As a result, rear passengers will be coddled by chairs that lie back an additional six degrees. In addition to the new extended model, the entire Panamera lineup will undergo revisions. Slight modifications to the exterior give it sleeker looks, especially important with complaints of the rear’s visual weight. More power can be found all around, even though the base V-8 has been dropped for a twin-turbocharged V-6. The V-8 does return, however, with more horsepower in the GTS and Turbo models.
RODING ROADSTER 23 Always a pleasure seeing what new innovative supercar might emerge from Germany. But after much anticipation and a few leaked photographs, we finally have the Roding Roadster and are glad to see that it looks strikingly similar to the concept drawings. Powered by BMW and designed with a miraculous carbon fiber reinforced plastic chassis and a body with carbon panels all around, the Roadster performs far beyond expectations. A turbocharged inline-six mid-mounted engine and six-speed manual transmission will ensure the ear-to-ear grin never leaves your face. Due to the ultra-light 2,094-pound body, you can take this sensational supercar from 0-60 mph in just 3.8 seconds and reach top speeds of 173 mph. Leather trim and a racing steering wheel give a great sport feel inside, and a touch screen GPS is standard to lead the way. To give the buyer a bit of an everyday option, Roding provides a second installable hood in the storage compartment. Although, it’s sad to say there will only be 23 available, meaning that the lucky owners of this supercar will have to act fast.

ROLLS-ROYCE GHOST EXTENDED WHEELBASE Call it handsome; call it powerful; just don’t call it the baby Rolls. Losing any reference to being the small brethren, the Ghost Extended Wheelbase, or EWB for the Rolls-Royce crowd, will surely excite those from the L.B.C., or Long Beach, California, for the hip-hop crowd, with an extra 6.7 inches of rear cabin space. It’s enough to allow any entourage to stretch out and will surely be the choice ride for basketball superstars such as the 7-foot 2-inch Shaquille O’Neal (and don’t let those Buick ads tell you otherwise). But the truly amazing thing is the how a 18-foot, 5,500-pound sedan with large expanses of soft full-grain leather, natural wood veneers and deep-tufted carpets can still make you want to forgo the rear chairs for the driver’s helm. Thank a massive, 6.6-liter V-12 with twin turbochargers for a torque wave that begins at a paltry 1,500 rpm and an air suspension that actively cancels out body roll for a ride that is smooth and stable.
ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM SERIES II Supple leather that required more than a dozen Alpine bulls’ hides, a thin-rimmed steering wheel with room to jostle off-center, hand cut, lacquered and polished wood veneers; it all feel so antiquated. Then there’s the 360-degree view offered by the five incorporated cameras, the full LED exterior lighting that automatically changes beam patterns to follow corners, and a large, 8.8-inch touch screen with a revised, BMW-sourced iDrive interface. It’s like a marriage between old and new, yesteryear with advanced technologies. Changes come slowly and deliberately in the Rolls-Royce family, such as the switch from a six- to eight-speed automatic, which does as much to aid the efficiency and performance of the V-12 engine as the glimmer of newness to the 10-year-old Phantom design. It may be getting a little long in the tooth, but the Phantom still makes quite an impression and will leave people talking. It’s probably because it represents 110 years of Rolls-Royce know-how and workmanship combined with 21st-century advancements.

The costliest Rolls is one truly expensive car. It ranks up there with the super exotics, but RollsRoyce affirms its level of class and prestige cannot be supplied at $300,000. It’s clearly directing that at rival Bentley, yet as much as a half-million-dollar car should offer only a courtly, stately air and be limited to the likes of royalty, the Drophead Coupé is by far the fun, informal Rolls-Royce. It demands sandals and a golfing shirt, early afternoon shopping on Rodeo Drive, and weekend yacht trips that begin on Thursday morning. olls is rolling. Riding off the success of the Ghost, it sold the most cars in its 109-year history, twice, setting new records in 2011 and 2012. The wave of success can be contributed to a departure from the past as the Ghost launches a new era of cars meant to be driven and not just driven in. Taking what it has learned from the Ghost, which accounts for one in three of its new car sales, it proffers the Wraith for 2014. Starting at the front, the Wraith mirrors the Ghost until about three-fourths of the way down, where the sloping rear roofline takes over, endowing a grand-touring appearance through a sporty fastback design. The two also share a sense of driving involvement not found in the Phantoms, which often beckon for a chauffeur so that you can lounge in the rear chairs. One good reason to take the helm is the 624horsepower, twin-turbocharged 6.6-liter V-12 engine. It’s the same BMW-sourced engine found in the Ghost,

but offers more power in the Wraith and proves that the luxury brand has some excitement in its bones as it whisks its occupants away to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. Unfortunately, it’s limited to 155 mph, a little disappointing for a car of this class and of these power levels. Meanwhile, Bentley is setting land-speed records with its Continental, even if they are on ice. Then, there is the eight-speed automatic transmission, which now uses the global-positioning system to monitor the road ahead and select the most appropriate gear, depending on the driving style. For instance, if the driver is having fun around some twisty turns, the transmission will hold the lower gear, staving off the upshift until exiting onto a straight path. As in all Rolls-Royce models, the Wraith is also just a nice place to be. Access to both the front and rear is through a pair of frameless coach doors. Then there is the surround sound system, which pumps out 1,300 watts through no less than 18 speakers. The Wraith provides a second car in what appears to be a mini Phantom lineup. ROSSION The Rossion Q1’s handling, design, performance, weight and just about every other imaginable aspect, were all considered in the development phases, and it shows in the final product. Every curve, vent and flat surface on the Q1 serves a singular purpose: to increase airflow and downforce while creating one of the world’s most attractive exteriors. Inside the Q1 is a practical and luxurious cockpit designed to fulfill the driver’s needs in a most comfortable and visually appealing manner. Controls are consciously placed, making them easy to navigate and manipulate. The carbon fiber seats can be wrapped in either glove-soft leather or the lush, yet durable, Alcantara suede. Rossion suggests a twin-turbocharged Ford/Jaguar Duratec V6 engine to make good use of the aerodynamic capabilities. This drivetrain will lay down a thrilling 450 horsepower and 400 foot-pounds of torque. Utilize all of the Q1’s power and it can accomplish a 0 to 60 mph run in 3.1 seconds, and a standing mile in 11.3 second at 124 mph. American power and engineering is on full display with the Rossion Q1.
SAVAGE RIVALE ROADYACHT GTS One may say that the only downside to owning most exotic cars is the limited seating, or, at the least the struggle of anyone getting into the back seats. Savage has solved this and created an exotic that they believe is like “driving a daydream.” The Roadyacht is designed with four doors, all being coach of their own design, with the rear doors becoming a part of the back quarter-panels. This exquisite convertible is not ordinary; overhead is a rare, hard-top, retractable, telescopic multi-panel roof system. A patented design takes only 15 seconds to raise or lower the roof. Powering this rare exotic is a twin-turbo 6.2-liter LS3 V-8 producing 670 base horsepower and 538 foot-pounds of torque. This means that this daydream will launch you from 0-60 mph in just 3.4 seconds and push up to 205 mph. For luxury, a touchscreen monitor is in place as the dash, a champagne cooler is located inside the rear cabin and the owner is given a custom watch that acts as keyless entry. With the Roadyacht, innovation incorporates luxury with performance to create what we may have thought was just a dream.

SPORT CHASSIS Being the biggest and baddest on the road is what many trucks aim for, but just about all of them fall short. All, that is, except for the SportChassis RHA-450. Everything about this truck is big and mean, from its appearance to its monster engine. Four Michelin XD2 255/70R 22.5-inch tires move the 277-inch-long truck along the pavement, via the Detroit Diesel DD13 12.8-liter engine. The power provided by this engine roars at 450 horsepower and an absurd 1,650 foot-pounds of torque, giving the driver unlimited towing capabilities. From an aesthetic standpoint, the RHA-450’s exterior shows the company’s expert design capabilities and attention to detail. It’s not easy designing and producing a large truck that is both unique and stylish, but SportChassis has most certainly accomplished this feat. Continuing the exterior’s high-quality appearance is an exquisite interior. The Italian leather-wrapped interior, paired with the SportChassis trademark Passive Noise Reduction System, will ensure that your ride is as comfortable and pleasant as possible. Due to the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of the RHA-450, a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required.
SPYKER B6 VENATOR Spyker’s next step in their automotive legacy is the B6 Venator Concept—“Venator” being the Latin word for “hunter.” This mid-engine sports car is the culmination of the Dutch automaker’s famous heritage, design capabilities and intense power. From the outside, the B6 Venator is clearly a Spyker, featuring the company’s trademark grille and canopy. A few additions have been made to differentiate this new concept from models of the past. Instead of the air-inlets jutting out from the body itself, they are instead integrated into the design, creating a refined and aerodynamic appearance. The most striking additions are the new 3D LED rear lights that do their best impression of a jet engine from a modern fighter airplane. From the inside, the B6 is just as gorgeous as any Spyker before it. A few of the company’s staple details are included, such as the exposed gearbox, aluminum dashboard and diamond stitched quilted interior. Peculiarly, Spyker has opted for a mid-mounted V-6 engine to power the B6 Venator, a step down from the C8 Aileron’s V-8. Nonetheless, this engine is still expected to produce upwards of 375 horsepower. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

SSC TUATARA Look out, supercar world. The SSC Tuatara is here, and it’s ready to take away some world records. Coming out of Washington state is one of the most powerful road-going cars ever created. Powered by an SSC-designed, billet aluminum twin-turbo V-8 engine, the automaker states that the Tuatara is packing 1,350 horsepower and 1,042 foot-pounds of torque. For comparison purposes, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport creates 1,200 horsepower with a W-16 engine. Mated to the Tuatara’s custom-built V-8 is either a seven-speed manual H-pattern transmission, or a sevenspeed SMG paddle-shift transmission. Put all of this hardware to work, and you’ll be blasted to 60 mph from a standstill in just 2.5 seconds, and continue up to its theoretical top speed of 276 mph. Matching the Tuatara’s supersonic capabilities is its streamlined body shape. Inside the car’s glass canopy is an interior where translucent screens are used instead of a traditional gauge cluster. The two separate screens on the passenger’s side show lateral Gs and current speed. While production has yet to be started, it is already making waves in the automotive world.

TESLA MODEL S PERFORMANCE After ten years of effort to create the perfect electric vehicle, our Californian friends have done it, and then some. The Model S is more affordable than most other vehicles in its class, and even performs better than a moderate number of them. The price may be similar at an $87,400 price tag, but consider the fact that you pay absolutely nothing for gas due to the plug-in-anywhere technology. With the 85 kWh Performance battery you can travel up to 265 miles on a full charge; about the same distance a V-8 of similar power will take you on a full tank of gas. If that doesn’t astonish you, then this will: the Model S Performance takes you from 0-60 in just 4.2 seconds, and up to a top speed of 130 mph. Plus, it boasts glamorous luxury such as electronic door handles that submerge into the door, leather and a 17-inch touchscreen Tesla display replacing the traditional center console. The Tesla touchscreen takes vehicle controls to a whole new level, controlling lights, the panoramic roof and even the Smart Air Suspension system. Tesla really is creating the sedan of the future.
ZENVO ST-1 Danish design has finally made its way to the supercar world, and we can’t say we’re disappointed. The bold craftsmanship gives way to a beautiful but powerful image for aggressive engineering. Bending the rules of automotive physics and doing what most manufacturers dare not to do, a LS7 7-liter V-8 was given both a supercharger and a turbocharger. That combination yields the perfect recipe for proud excitement with 1,104 horsepower and 1,050 foot-pounds of torque. The lines that shape this exquisite supercar are designed to flow according to the aerodynamic form of the wheel arches and to create bold surfaces that form climactic reflections. Both the front and the rear are designed to match with a “theme” so that an entire walk-around shows a pristine piece of art. Nothing but the best is used inside of the ST-1, including an innovative multimedia system with a GPS and a sound system powered by Bose. Never have you felt more unique and more empowered than behind the wheel of this prestigious supercar. Danish engineering is here, and it’s striving for the top.

ARRINERA AUTOMOTIVE Arrinera might be a new name, and Poland is certainly an unusual base for a supercar manufacturer, but the company has legendary designer Lee Noble—the man behind Noble Automotive—at the helm and is as international as it gets. A 6.2-liter crate LS9 engine pumps out 650 horsepower and 604 pound-foot of torque. In this 2,866 pound form it is enough to send this new machine to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and to a top speed of 211 mph. The advantage of the relatively simple construction and crate LS9 engine comes in the price. Arrinera is aiming at $160,000 for a car that should easily compete with the Gallardo and Ferrari 458 in terms of outright performance.

CAMPAGNA T-REX Montreal can be very chilly, but this Canadian will make you sweat. These tandem seat three wheelers are titled as a motorcycle and powered by the venerable Kawasaki 1400cc inline 4. We like the fact that no engineering sacrifices were made, this is all muscle. A tuned length exhaust header and ramair intake help to make 197 horsepower and 113 foot-pounds of torque, which would be adequate in any economy sedan. But when channeled to the single 295/35/ZR18 rear tire, this 1,040-pound featherweight jumps to 60 mph in 3.92 seconds. Six forward sequential gears (with reverse) will push you up to 144 mph if you dare. At first glance it may seem like performance is the only goal, but a weekend getaway isn’t off the table. Three point seatbelts, full instrumentation and an ergonomic cockpit keep both occupants happy.

DE MACROSS EPIQUE GT1 The GT1 is the first offering from Canada’s de Macross Motors Corp (DMMC), which was set up in 2009. The de Macross uses a supercharged 5.4-liter V-8 sourced from American company Roush Yates Racing Engines, which also makes powerplants for Ford’s NASCAR outfit. The monocoque chassis is made from carbon fiber and aluminum, and performance is suitably brisk: 060 mph in 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 230-plus mph. There are also some neat technical touches, like active ride control systems that drop the ground clearance to 28 mm at high speeds to ensure ultimate road holding. And, with an asking price of $1.5 million, exclusivity is assured from the outset.

2014 DETROIT-ELECTRIC SP:01 Detroit Electric once again entered the automotive industry in 2008, but only now have they officially risen from the dead with the world’s fastest electric roadster, the SP:01. LYKAN HYPERSPORT The second most expensive production car in the world certainly proves itself to be worth the entire $3,400,000. Made with a carbon fiber composite body and run by a twin-turbocharged boxer flat-six engine mounted in the rear, you wouldn’t expect that sort of price tag. But, the truth behind the price is exposed by rubies and diamonds in the headlights, interactive holograms in the dash and much more. Never before have any of these things been done, only dreamt. But now it’s reality, and comes with 750 horsepower, 708 foot-pounds of Torque, 6-speed sequential gearbox, 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 240 mph, giving those fortunate enough to buy one of the seven available a real taste of the future.

MASTRETTA MXT This Mexican sportscar comes with a two-liter turbocharged powerplant sourced from Volkswagen producing 250 horsepower in a car that weighs just 2,100 pounds. It’s a true lightweight sportscar, and features an aluminum semi-monocoque and extensive use of carbon fiber. The VW engine is relatively bulletproof, too, and in this frame will send you to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, and on to a top speed of 160 mph. Design-wise the MXT is compact, relatively fuss free and clean, and the price tag of $58,000 is within the realms of the now-discontinued Lotus Exige which would likely form its closest competitor.

MIENRVA JM BRABAZON Back from the dead is Minerva, a once prominent Belgian auto manufacturer who built cars from 1902 to 1938. Utilizing a carbon-fiber monocoque, this All-Wheel-Drive Exotic looks to have other hybrids squarely in its sights. A rear mounted V-12 coupled with an F1 sequential six-speed powers the rear wheels. The front axle has twin motor-generators that capture power from regenerative braking, which will be stored in a low mounted battery pack. With a fully charged system, they claim a power to weight ratio of 1:1, and that level of performance is electrifying in anyone’s book.

MORGAN THREE-WHEELER UK manufacturer Morgan began making three-wheelers when such cars were perfectly normal, rather than a modern day oddity. This is something of a tribute act to those early days. It is powered by a 1,982 cc V-Twin engine from S&S in Wisconsin that produces 115 horsepower, but weighs just 1,100 pounds. So, it hits 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and tops out at 125 mph, but that’s more than enough in an open car with an inherently unstable rear. Renowned car nut Jay Leno has ordered one, and the little Morgan has become a sales sensation around the world as drivers look for a car that is fun at legal speeds.

PURITALIA 427 The rebirth of the AC Cobra is a phrase we’ve all heard countless times before, but the Puritalia 427 is a thoroughly modern slant on the legend. It is also a brute; or it will be. The Naples, Italy based start-up is aiming to deliver the first cars in 2015. Weighing just 2,400 pounds, the 427 will come with two engine options. The first is a mildly mental, naturally aspirated 5.0-liter GM lump pumping out 445 horsepower. The second is a supercharged option knocking out a thoroughly indecent 605 horsepower. It also looks incredible, and we cannot wait for the finished production car, even though it will cost up to $200,000 when it finally arrives on our shores.

Using a chrome-moly tube frame with an integrated roll cage, this composite bodied monster is light on its feet. Huge 390mm (15.35”) TRW ceramic brakes with 6 piston calipers behind Continental ContiForce race rubbers will keep you in front of your competition and safe on the track. Audi won’t sell the RS4 Avant in the US, but at least we can enjoy its engine, albeit in an incredible, street-legal race car.
