The Original Bad Boy

THE ONLY OFFICIALLY PRODUCED DEUCE ROADSTER IN 75 YEARS While the road from concept to reality was accomplished through significant engineering achievement, the production management to assure the finest attention to each detail has been monumental. Hot rods are traditionally known as “one-off-builds” with an end result that no two vehicles are the same. Because each car is customized, many component manufacturers provide products that require hand finishing for fitment and individual application. Detroit Street Rod production vehicles are built to precise original equipment manufacturing (OEM) standards with high quality specified components. The component manufacturers 8

2009 Exotic Car Buyers Guide

selected for this revolutionary concept have made significant contributions by meeting these demanding standards. Manufacturing of the commemorative 75th Anniversary Deuce is the first production run since Henry and Edsel Ford’s original design rolled off the assembly line in 1932. Each vehicle receives the same original equipment manufacturer’s attention to detail and the high-bake paint finish that was applied to the Ford GT, an additional landmark accomplishment in street rod history. The Limited Edition 75th Anniversary Deuce is available through select dealers nationwide. Only 100 vehicles will be crafted. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

Returns

The ’32 Ford was a breakthrough with the aesthetic design of the roadster body, the engineering achievement of the lightweight chassis, and the production debut of the revolutionary V8 “Flathead” engine. These vehicles became attractive to hot rodders in the late 1930’s and 1940’s, and formed the foundation for what has become the quintessential hot rod, forever known as “the Deuce”.

If you’re planning a Rocky-style comback, you better have an awesome comeback kid. And Alfa Romeo’s drop-dead gorgeous 8C Competizione and recently unveiled 8C Spider are just that. You’ll probably have to wait till late 2010 for the volume Alfa models to land, but the 8C Coupe should be here this fall with the Spider close behind. But with just 100 of each allocated for the United States—stickered at around $265 grand for the Coupe and $285,000 for the Spider—pretty much all have been sold. Based on a shortened Maserati GranTurismo steel chassis, the Alfa is clothed in a carbon-fiber body. Power comes from a Ferrari/Maserati-derived 4.7-liter V-8, cranking out 450 hp, coupled to a six-speed paddle-shift auto. That’ll be good enough for zero-to-60 mph in around four seconds and a 190-mph top speed. Talk about an instant classic.

Million dollar looks What’s not to like?

Want peace-of-mind reliability, gotta-have-it looks, the spectacular performance of a LeMans-winning chassis, and 100,000-mile GM warranty? The Anteros from n2a Motors, in Santa Ana, California, looks like a million-buck Italian classic from the ’60s but without the high-strung Italian temperament. Beneath its sexy carbon-fiber-composite coachwork lurks a brand-new C6 Corvette chassis, running gear, and all GM safety features. Stock 440-hp or Z06 performance is not enough for you? N2a Motors will add a supercharger, twin turbos, or any other performance upgrades. Available in Coupe, Roadster, or Targa, with prices from $144,950, the Anteros will debut at the L. A. Auto Show in November. Each car will be painted in a color chosen by the customer, with no color ever duplicated. Ah yes, n2a stands for No Two Alike. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

After half a decade on the road, it was time for Aston’s DB9 to get a little nip/tuck makeover to keep it fresh. Mechanical changes include a compression increase for the big 6.0-liter V-12, to give an extra 20 hp and 23 lb-ft of twist. Plus a revised version of the six-speed ZF auto that delivers 25percent swifter shift times. Together, they’re good for a 0.3-second drop in the zero-to-60 sprint, to around 4.6 seconds. The “9” also gets new Bilstein shocks for ’09 to give a smoother low-speed ride and better bump absorption. Inside, some of the dash features of the latest DBS are carried over— the fancy keyless “emotional control unit” and the rotary switches. On the exterior, changes are limited to a new five-bar grille and door mirrors from the DBS. But it all only heightens our love affair with this British beefcake, which continues to rank as one of the world’s greatest GTs.

Two things a new owner of Aston’s magnificent $265,000 DBS should know before taking delivery: First, it doesn’t float. Earlier this year, some unfortunate soul was delivering a new DBS to the set of the next 007 escapade, Quantum of Solace, due out in November. When he lost control of the 510-hp, 191-mph projectile, he crashed through a wall and dunked the car into Italy’s Lake Garda. Unlike Bond’s famous Lotus in The Spy Who Loved Me, which morphed into a submarine when it dived in the briny, the Aston sank like a rock. The second piece of advice is never lose the ignition key. Why? A replacement will cost a cool $2,000. It’s because this chunk of stainless steel and crystal is nothing less than a piece of automotive jewelry. So much so that Aston doesn’t even call it a key—it’s an ECU, short for “Emotion Control Unit”. That’s a pretty good description for the entire car.

Nothing we can think of

We’re already polishing up our superlatives: world’s most beautiful four door, sexiest sedan ever. What else can you say about the upcoming Aston Martin Rapide, due out towards the end of 2009? Based on a stretched and widened DB9 chassis, the Rapide grows by almost a foot compared to the 9. And the higher roofline not only provides ample headroom, but also keeps the car’s stunning lines in proportion. Power comes from Aston’s potent 6.0-liter V-12 with a slight horsepower hike over the DB9, rumored to be to close to the 510 hp of the DBS. Even with an additional 100 pounds more than the DB9, it should be good for zero-to-60-mph sprints in 4.7 seconds. But for those new owners hoping to collect their car from the Aston factory in Merrie Olde England, you might want to rebook your tickets; the Rapide is going to be assembled in Austria. 18

V8 VANTAGE

See Aston’s V8 Vantage—the baby Aston—on the street and you risk whiplash from whipping your head around to get a better look. But despite its supercar looks, it never quite delivered supercar performance. Zero-to60 mph in 5.0 seconds? A Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is quicker. Thankfully the folks at Aston have corrected that with a makeover for 2009. The capacity of the Jaguar-derived V-8 goes up from 4.3 to 4.7 liters, with max power increasing from 379 hp to a meatier 420 hp. That should see its standstill-to-60mph drop to a more exciting 4.7 seconds. Both the six-speed manual and the Sportshift manu-matic also see useful improvements to make them more user-friendly. And finally, inside there’s a new, more upscale center console along with Aston’s now-trademark push-in-to-start key. Sadly, the fussy instruments remain. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

AUDI

R8

We loved the R8 so much that we voted it Best New Exotic in last year’s Exotic Car Buyers Guide. And our love affair hasn’t dimmed one iota. This mid-engined supercar still sets the standard in accessible performance, thrillride handling, and easy-to-livewith civility and refinement. And we reckon its stunning lines are still going to look as hot in 10 years as they do today. Its 4.4liter 420-hp V-8 still provides neck-jerking performance with 60 mph coming up from standstill in just 4.4 seconds, while standard all-wheel drive keeps it hugging the blacktop. Yes, we’re sad the ground-shaking R8 TDI concept, with its twin-turbo V-12 making 500 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque on diesel fuel, may not make it to production. But we’re comforted by the knowledge that an RS8, powered by the 572-hp twin-turbo V-10 from the mighty RS6, should be in production next year. 24

It’s worth $50 grand just to hear the exhaust. It’s the kind of deep, throaty rumble you got with a big-block American muscle car circa 1971. Make no mistake: if you own an Audi S5, you’re going to be spending a lot of time revving the 354-hp 4.2-liter V-8 to 6,500 rpm just to hear the sound track. Audi launched the low-volume S5 last year to debut its first two-door, four-seat coupe in 16 years. This year saw the less potent A5 follow in its tire tracks. But with less than $11,000 separating the two models, why would any one not stretch to the S? Floor the throttle and it’ll rip to 60 mph from rest in 5.0 seconds and not quit till its eating up the miles at a rock-steady 155 mph. And standard Quattro all-wheel drive puts down the power with such seamless ease you feel you’re driving on invisible rails.

Nein, nein, nein! The V-10 engine in the Audi S6 is not from the Lamborghini Gallardo. Believe that and you’ll believe Michael Jackson is an alien. Wait a sec. Let’s call it “loosely derived” from the Lambo V-10. After all, Audi and Lamborghini are part of the VW Group, so the corporate parts bin is open to all. What matters is that there’s a big 5.2-liter 10cylinder under the S6’s hood, punching out 435 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque—enough to launch this sleek ’n’ sexy four door to 60 mph from standstill in a whisker more than five seconds. Standard Quattro all-wheel drive takes care of delivering all that muscle to all four wheels, while surgically precise steering makes it amazingly agile through the twisties. No, it’s not in the same power league as the 500-hp duo of BMW M5 and Merc E63 AMG, but it’s arguably just as much of a joy to drive. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

" I have always been skeptical of simulators not being realistic enough in comparison to the real thing. That was until I drove a system from Motorsports Simulators for the first time and I humbly ate my words. In my 2007 rookie Champ Car season I prepared for each event using one of their simulators, and I owe them for the track time advantage I had over my competitors going into each event. Word on the street is that Audi is planning a major makeover for its luxe-barge A8 in 2009 for the 2010 model year. It’ll get a fresh platform, more engine options—including the big V-12 TDI diesel, boasting around 740 lb-ft of torque, plus a V-6 hybrid. The performance S8 version is also expected to get a power hike for its Lambo-derived V-10, bumping it up to an impressive 520 hp. Until then the big S8 soldiers on, providing the mouthwatering cocktail of a luxury flagship that goes like absolute stink. While 450 hp might not seem too thrilling in these days of 500-plus AMG Benz super sedans, it feels like a lot more, courtesy of the S8’s lightweight-aluminum body. Adaptive air suspension gives the car a magic-carpet-like ride quality while all-wheel drive helps keep it rock steady at 150-plus mph on the Autobahn. And inside its interior design still sets the standard.

Even with its new longer, wider body and harder-edged lines, Audi’s cute-as-abasket-of-spaniel-puppies TT still has a tough time shaking off its “chick car” image. Apart from handing out loaners to Ice-T, Ice Cube, and Dr. Dre, you’re best solution as a carmaker is to crank up the horsepower, which is exactly what Audi has done with the TT. Enter the TTS with more oomph from a new direct-injection version of its 2.0-liter turbo four. Max power goes up from 200 hp to a more serious 265 hp— which is 15 more horses than the 3.2-liter V-6. Mated to it is Audi’s latest six-speed dual-clutch S-tronic gearbox, enabling the TTS to gallop from standstill to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. Direct injection also gives the four banger a locomotive-like 258 lb-ft of torque that comes on tap from just 2,500 rpm. Take your pick of coupe or roadster versions when the TTS goes on sale in November ’08. 32

M3

It’s Tiger and Lance, Venus and A-Rod all rolled into one. It’s the ace athlete of the asphalt, the superstar of the slalom. Its maker’s name is superfluous; we all know it simply as the M3. Rivals have come along to attempt to prize-away its golden crown— Caddy CTS-V, Lexus IS-F, Audi S4. But there is still nothing quite as exhilarating, or involving, or rewarding, or just so darned good, as an M3 Coupe. Why so good? Take its naturally aspirated 4.0-liter V-8. It delivers a 414-hp sock-in-the-jaw thrust, accompanied by an 8,300rpm crescendo that will make grown men weep. Its poise, its balance, its sheer chuckability through twisty backroads provides racecar thrills in a real-world, dailydriver package. And see it in the metal, with those slender-spoked 19-inch rims, those quad tailpipes, that subtle body kit, and it’s nothing less then visual poetry in

So, are you a P400, a P500, or a P500 Sport kinda person? When it comes to BMW’s mighty M5, the P stands for “power” and the following number is the number of horseys. P400 and 400 hp is what you get from the M5’s 5.0-liter V-10 in cruising-around default mode— or when you hand the keys to the kid at the valet-park kiosk. Feeling a little more frisky? Dial in the P500 mode and you instantly crank up the volume to the full 500 hp and zero-to-60-mph sprinting in 4.5 seconds. For a little track time, or neighborhood thrill rides, selecting P500 Sport again gives you the full 500 ponies, together with shift response times much like those of flicking a light switch. Whichever P you choose is going to equal F, as in “fun.” Even at a whopping $84 grand, there’s nothing else out there with four doors and four seats that packs this much excitement.

Tu r n i n g t h e Ta b l e s o n D r i v e w a y S t r e s s Most auto accidents occur close to home. And what’s closer to your home than your driveway? “How safe would you feel driving backwards and making turns into traffic, yet isn’t that what you do each time you roll out of your driveway,” explains Bill Schwenker of CarTurner, Inc. Adding that the potential for disaster, in the form of children or pets, is lurking about your driveway even before you reach the curb. If you have a difficult driveway the reduction in stress is unbelievable. You end up going out more often, friends who wouldn’t visit do, and property that was unsellable because of a problem driveway becomes luxury property because of the turntable. Just push the button and the car turns around and automatically stops facing out. CarTurner’s patented technology allows CarTurner to manufacture and install their turntable at a make sense price. Even though CarTurner is less expensive, it is THE 34

2009 Exotic Car Buyers Guide

highest quality turntable, using more than 1400 lbs of stainless steel per machine. When asked how CarTurner can install a stainless steel machine for a quarter of the price of a cheap galvanized steel turntable, CarTurner president Bill Schwenker, states there are 3 reasons. It was designed to be a cost effective solution using new technology, volume manufacturing, and no foundation work. The manufacturing quality is unreal. Even though the machine’s turning surface is more than 13 feet, the seams are tighter than on any luxury car, due to having all the parts cut with precision lasers. Because there is no foundation work, there is no concrete cutting, no excavation, no shoring of foundation, no engineer, and no permits. CarTurner assembles like a giant lazy susan in about 3 hours and plugs into a 110v wall outlet just like a garage door opener. Even though it is a surface mount, it is proportionally thinner than a dime. Frankly we were www.duPontREGISTRY.com

stunned that the Bugatti and the Maserati in these pictures drove straight onto the turntables with no problem or special ramping. The CarTurner was designed for rugged daily use. Designed and tested for more than 3 years in real time, with an SUV parked 10-20 hours a day on the table and 10-15 drive offs and drive ons per day. They were tested in continuous rotation 24 hours a day for more than 4 months, loaded with a SUV, and tested with loads of more than 16,000 lbs. The turntable shown underneath the Bugatti, is their standard nonskid surface. This surface is the way the steel is made, and it cannot wear off or peal off. It is nonskid when wet, and shows no scratches. The CarTurner shown under the Maserati MC12 is their polished stainless steel finish. It is perfect for dealers and collectors. The rotation catches peoples eye, allows them to see the beauty of the car from all sides as it rotates and makes the car look so good you can’t turn away Because CarTurners are surface mount they can be moved. Moved to fine tune a location, or moved across a showroom to change the mix of cars Because of the rugged and rust proof nature of the stainless steel used and the thorough test program he has carried out, CarTurner President, Bill Schwenker equates the CarTurner to your garage door opener in terms of reliability and ease of use.

Note: The pictures of Bugatti and Maserati in this article were taken at the 2008 Concorso Italiano. Both machines were installed by one man in 4 1/2 hours. The Maserati is on rough asphalt, on a 4% slope and both cars rotated the entire show with no problems.

M6/M6 CONVERTIBLE

Calling Jenny Craig. If ever a car needed a gastric bypass or a nip/tuck of the midriff, this is it. Measuring 192 inches stem to stern and tipping the scales at a porcine 3,900 pounds, the two-door M6 boasts the same kind of visual presence as, say, the Incredible Hulk. Yet here is a car with the kind of backseats that most five-year-olds would find a challenge to sit in. But for those who think the four-door M5 is just too effete, here is a Bavarian bruiser that uses its 500 hp to blast from standstill to 60 in just 4.5 seconds and cross continents at a rock-steady 155 mph. You’ll hate the herky-jerky sequential manual gearbox, so opt for the new six-speed manual. But what’s amazing is that despite its bulk, the M6 carves curves like a thoroughbred, thanks to laser-precise steering and enormous grip from its 19inch rubber. Just keep it away from the Krispy Kremes.

X6 XDRIVE50I

To some it may seem like the answer to a question no one asked. Here’s a sport ute with eight inches of ground clearance and a waistline that weighs in at an elephantine 5,270 pounds. Yet its swoopy, fastback styling shouts out sports coupe, as does the tight seating for four and cramped rear storage. So what is it? It’s a BMW X6, a.k.a. an SAC, short for Sports Activity Coupe. But what really causes the confusion is the way the X6 handles itself. Despite its considerable heft, the car, sorry SAC, slices through curves like a Z4 two-seater on steroids, with next to zero body roll and massive grip from its 19-inch rubber. It performs too, courtesy of its 4.4-liter 400-hp twin-turbo V-8 that fires it to 60 mph from zero in a staggering 5.3 seconds. While this $63,000 multitasker defines the term “niche vehicle”, for a select few BMW fans it’ll be all they ever ask for.

iDrive still lurks

BMW is looking to seize back some of its technical muscle in the high-end luxury market with an all-new 7 Series that is nothing short of a computerized power house. The new 7 features such techno goodies as rear-wheel steering, Internet connectivity, and a blind-spot detection system that vibrates the steering wheel as a warning. While the car’s styling is evolutionary, it’s still a major head spinner, courtesy of the oversized twin-kidney grilles, the razor-sharp creases along its sides, and flatter body surfaces. While the folks at BMW included a lot more high-strength steel in the body for added rigidity, they’ve offset the extra weight with aluminum for the hood, roof, doors, and fenders. The all-new interior has a very cool, high-rez black-panel instrument display. U.S. buyers will only get a 750i model featuring the same twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 launched in the X6. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

BMW

AC SCHNIZTER M3

Pulling no punches, the new BMW M3 is the most extreme M3 to ever be developed for mass production. Schnitzer knew that the power was already more than sufficient, since BMW dropped, forced, and squeezed a large V-8 under the hood. Instead it focused on rounding out the driving experience with new, stylish rims, larger brakes, a throatier exhaust, aerodynamic attachments, a racier suspension, and more lavish interior bits. The result is a car that looks and feels more at home on the track without any loss to its everyday drivability. The aerodynamic kit is stylish, garnering—combined with the deep bellow of the exhaust—more attention than the everyday M3. Best of all, you can order this revolutionary M3 as a complete kit or in parts à la carte. (310) 203-390, www.cecwheels.com

HAMANN BMW 645

Red Performance, out of Atlanta, Georgia, has come out with a custom kit for anybody that wants their old BMW 645 to stand out more. It starts with a set of custom-painted 22-inch Forgiato Quinot rims that have a deeper dish than a Chicago pizza. The look is further enhanced via a custom-painted Hamann body kit, a Hamann dual exhaust, and red brake calipers. Red Performance also personally customizes the upholstery and audio systems—the new look isn’t simply reserved for people outside the car. To make sure the conversion is not just all show with no go, they also install a Dinan electronic control unit upgrade to push up the power ante of the 4.4-liter V-8. (404) 352-0010, www.redperformance.com

HARTGE BMW X6

The BMW X6 may not be the best utility vehicle on the road. However, what it lacks in storage space and passenger room, it makes up for in style, performance, class, and exclusivity. Hartge builds on this, with a boost in power via a new electronic control unit, hard-not-to-notice 22inch rims and tires, and a few exterior enhancements. Horsepower is upped the 35i gasoline engine—jumping from 300 hp to a more useful 350 hp, respectfully. Hartge also offers a variety of 22-inch rims to chose from that, with help from a set of Hartge lowering springs, fills up the wheel wells nicely. Sitting lower might hamper off-road performance, but we all know that isn’t what the X6 is made for. (800) 280-6966, www.hartge.de

The “Ins” & “Outs” of Automotive Leasing What is a lease transfer? A lease transfer allows one person to assume an in process lease from another person. For example, if your neighbor had 18 months left on his car lease, and you wanted to take over his lease, you would simply takeover his lease and start making the payments each month for the remaining 18 months. At the end of the term you would turn the car into your leasing company or have the option to purchase it just as you would if you had leased the vehicle originally. It is important to note that following the rules and procedures established by the leasing company who ultimately owns the vehicle is critically impor tant, but the process itself is relatively easy to understand. Additionally, transferring a lease can provide a great deal of financial benefit to both the individual exiting, as well as the one entering the lease. What are the benefits of taking over someone else’s lease? For the Buyer (the person taking over a lease) you are able to take over a lease with no money down and with a shorter lease term than you would typically see being offered at a dealership. Many individuals looking to exit their leases are willing to offer cash incentives to make it even more attractive. In addition to the significant benefits of shorter commitments, low month ly payments, and potential cash incentives other reasons to takeover a lease exist as well. In some cases the original lessee drove the vehicle less than anticipated, this leaves new lessee with extra miles without the extra cost. Another example is a lease with an attractive purchase option at the end of the term. Why would someone want you to take over their lease? Many reasons exist for someone wanting or needing out of their automo tive lease. For instance, there may be some sort of financial motivation for doing so such as a promotion and the desire for a more luxurious vehicle.

On the other side of the equation it could be the loss of a job as a result of downsizing and no longer being able to afford the lease payment. Regardless of the reason, transferring a lease as opposed to other methods of exiting is nearly always the most cost effective strategy. As an existing lease holder (the lease “Seller”), they are bound to a lease contract for the remaining term. In order to exit the lease early they would have to pay early termination penalties, totaling thousands of dollars. The alternative is a lease transfer, allowing the Seller to walk away without pay ing the early termination penalties. Where do buyers and sellers meet to do a lease transfer? Sometimes you will find leases available for takeover in your local news paper, through a friend, or perhaps at work, but these avenues are limited in terms of selection and important lease transfer information. That being said, Swapalease.com, the largest online marketplace for vehicle lease transfers, is the preferred method. Swapalease.com specializes in connect ing people who want to get out of a car lease with people who want to take over one. On the Seller side of the equation one can list their lease for transfer online or contact Swapalease.com by telephone for live lease transfer specialist assistance. On the Buyer side one can search by year, make, model, months remaining, monthly payment, and other criteria. In addition to connecting Sellers and Buyers, Swapalease.com has established relationships with service providers of ancillary services to the lease transfer process includ ing transportation and inspections. Swapalease.com is the world’s largest automotive lease marketplace and the pioneer of facilitating lease transfers online as evidenced by the compa ny’s patented processes. ARNAGE T Imagine Buckingham Palace hurtling along at 179 mph. Or Windsor Castle power sliding round a racetrack while the Grey Poupon is spilling all over the lamb’swool rugs. This is the absurdity of the 500-hp Bentley Arnage T. One minute you’re wafting along with only the ticking of the dashboard clock breaking the silence; the next you’re hurling towards the horizon with more tire smoke than a ’70s big-block Camaro. Yes, this flagship of the Bentley sedan lineup may be wrinklier than Keith Richards—its 6.75-liter V-8 dates back nearly 50 years—but it’s still one of the greatest, most elegant highperformance luxury sedans on the planet. While there’s a regular 450-hp R version and a stretched RL in the Arnage lineup, it’s the twin-turbo T, with its massive 738 lb-ft of torque, that pumps the adrenaline. And the amazing thing is, despite its massive

5,699-pound bulk, the T is a remarkably nimble, agile car through the curves. It’s a car full of surprises. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..

Plutocrats, playboys, and Palm Beach housewives now have a choice when it comes to megapriced four-seat ragtops: Rolls-Royce Drophead Coupe or Bentley Azure. Take your pick. But we love the Bentley for its ever-so-slightly-less-decadent persona. Yes, it’s still massive, measuring 213 inches bow to stern, and it tips the scales at a whopping 5,941 pounds. But with a 6.75-liter twin-turbo V-8 up front, delivering 645 lb-ft of torque, it does a wonderful job of lifting up its skirt and wafting down the road. Despite having its top chopped, the Azure is stiffer than George Dubya in front of the White House press corps, so nary a squeak or rattle is heard. And the finish is just spectacular, with acres of leather and varnished wood lining the cabin. Yet despite it weighing as much as the average supertanker, it’s surprisingly nimble and agile on its feet.

You can stand in line to buy one of the 550 Bentley Brooklands coupes to be built. But wait. Oops, so sorry, we’ve just learned all have been sold. Despite its lofty $348,085 asking price, this magnificent coupe version of the droptop Azure sold out before you could mouth the words “global recession”. It’s a Bentley coupe of the old school—massively overengineered, obscenely powerful, and sumptuously equipped. Even though it weighs more than a Mack truck, it can glide from standstill to 60 mph in slightly more than five seconds and devour the autobahn at a rock-steady 184 mph. That’s what happens when you have a massive 774 lb-ft of torque at your disposal. As you’d expect of a car the length of Long Island, there’s no shortage of backseat knee- and headroom, and the cabin is just a masterpiece of hedonistic luxury and elegance. Need more speed than the 552-hp Flying Spur to whisk you to the opera before curtain up? Try a 600-hp Flying Spur Speed. With the same go-faster tactics as the Continental GT Speed, the Flying Spur’s 6.0-liter W-12’s subtle engine tweaks reduce friction and improve breathing. The big sedan also rides a half-inch lower and the revised steering provides a more direct feel. It comes with new 20-inch alloys shod with specially developed Pirellis, while another $16 grand buys you optional carbon-ceramic brakes. Want more? Another $6,900 gets you the optional audio system with its 1,100-watt amp—the most powerful ever produced for an automobile—and 15 speakers. On the road, this Speed version of the already quick Flying Spur feels like it runs on speed, with zero-to-60 sprinting in just 4.5 seconds and a top speed of a genuine 200 mph. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

CONTINENTAL GT SPEED

Did you know that Bentley’s Continental GT Speed holds the world speed record … on ice? Early last year, four-time world rally champion, Juha Kankkunen averaged 199.86 mph in both directions on a frozen stretch of the Baltic Sea in Finland. His oneway top speed was an impressive 207 mph. That’s the wonder of all-wheel drive and 602 hp under the hood. For everyone who fell in love with the original Continental GT in 2003, the even-more-sporting Speed is an excuse to buy another. Tweaking the boost output of the turbos gives ninepercent more power and 15-percent more torque. That means zero-to-60-mph sprinting in 4.3 seconds—a tenth quicker—and the kind of mid-range thrust that is usually associated with military jets. Stylewise, the Speed gets a redesigned front air intake and a more upright grille, along with a set of stunning thin-spoke 20-inch rims. 48

MANSORY CONTINENTAL GT

The Continental GT could be the sexiest Bentley ever. It combines a sporty ride with fine performance, all masked under a sleek, tight skin—what is not to like? So when tuners come out with packages to upgrade the already well-done GT, it is hard to imagine that they could improve on something so successful. Mansory doesn’t remap the way to the finish line but rather looks for a means to improve on the existing trek. Items such as a discreet, new spoiler; a classier steering wheel; eye-catching rims; better brakes; wire-mesh inserts on the body; a lowered ride height; a power increase—up to 621-hp; and a fully customizable interior may not make your car feel like a totally different auto, but that is the point. (310) 659-4050, www.ogaracoach.com

PREMIER4509 BENTLEY GT

The Bentley GT has become as commonplace on the city streets as beautiful people in Miami. One way to make your Bentley more exclusive is via the new Premier4509 package. Only 100 kits— each with their own serial number—will be delivered from this Asian tuner, so you can rest assured that you won’t ever see another just like yours in the valet parking area. The entire kit will consist of a front bumper, side skirts, a rear bumper, front fenders, and rear quarter panels that are constructed of carbon fiber and fiberreinforced plastic. The only drawback to this package is there are no performance upgrades or benefits from this Asian tuner. Which means you’ll be driving around in the flashiest, most aggressive-looking ride on the road without the added horsepower to back up your claim. (562) 633-0012, www.premier4509.com

PROJECT KAHN CONTINENTAL GT-S

“Kkkaaahhnnn!” might be many people’s initial reaction when you tell them about your new Bentley ride. After that it might be followed with some sort of compliment on how curvaceous and beautiful the car looks; how it separates itself from the other Bentley GTs you may come across on the city streets. Basically a cosmetic upgrade, the Bentley Kahn GT-S adds a stunning body kit coupled to a variety of large, lightweight rims. The cabin is upgraded with new leather on nearly every place your hand can reach. You can buy the whole thing as a complete conversion or à la carte. (800) 944-5246, www.Kahndesignna.com

VEYRON 16.4 GRAND SPORT 9 200AR C HE OF TEAR Y

Looking for a little wind-in-the-hair action at 200-plus mph? Look no further than Bugatti’s latest version of its 1,001-hp Veyron 16.4 über car, the Grand Sport. Bugatti plans to build 150 of these liftoff-top Veyrons, priced at a cool 1.4million euros—that’s around $2.05 million. And they’re offering the first 50 to existing Veyron owners so they can have the ultimate summer/winter pairing. As there’s about as much spare room in a Veyron as there is in a coach seat on Southwest, Bugatti designers opted for a removable polycarbonate targa roof panel that sits on a special stand in the garage when not in use. Should you get caught in a sprinkle, the designers have devised this brilliant umbrella that opens up and clips to the corners of the windshield. Other changes include major chassis reinforcement, a slightly taller windshield, and new LED lights. Now how can you top all of that?

You can probably count the number of Caddy XLR-Vs that have found buyers this year on the fingers of two hands. But for those who’ve signed away $100 grand on this supercharged rocket ship, the bonus is that they can be pretty sure they’ll never see another in the Trader Vic’s valet-park line. It’s still a mighty fine high-performance GT. It has power to spare— 443 hp to be precise—from its blown 4.4-liter V-8. That gives zero-to-60 sprinting in just 4.6 seconds. And sharing its super-stiff hydro-formed chassis with the Corvette means that it corners quite a bit better than your Uncle Waldo’s old vinyl-roofed DeVille. It’s immensely practical too, with its folding hardtop dropping into the trunk at the touch of a button. A mild interior makeover for ’09 increases the quality look and feel of the cabin, but it’s still not rich and luxurious enough to justify its sky-high sticker. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

C16 CONVERTIBLE One of our biggest gripes with the latest C6 Corvettes is that they all kinda look the same. To the untrained eye, a $103grand ZR1 looks a lot like a cooking $46,000 coupe. That’s the big appeal of Callaway’s latest C16 coupe and convertible—it’s a Corvette under the skin, but on the outside, every body panel is changed. And from its 1950s Ferrari-grille opening to its curvy rear and carbon-fiber wheels, the C16 oozes sportscar style. It also has the power to match its rakish lines, courtesy of a Callaway-developed, supercharged 6.2-liter LS3 V-8, cranking out 650 hp and enough torque to bring down houses. The standard C16 package is good enough to launch the car to 60 in just 3.3 seconds and go on to a top speed of 200-plus mph. And there are also hundreds of options to choose from. Our favorite: the hand-stitched leather interior for a cool $24 grand.

Yep, you bet it’s got a Hemi. A 6.1-liter, 425horse whole hunka burnin’ Hemi. And now it offers a six-speed stick shift to play with, the ’09 Challenger SRT8 is just about perfect. This is old-school, the-Fonz-in-Happy Days fun. Dial up five grand on the tach, slip your Vans sneaker off the clutch pedal, and laugh like a drain as the car deposits two long lines of rubber. Juvenile? Irresponsible? Yup. But this new demon Dodge isn’t just about straight-line tire fryin’. Team SRT has done a fine job of making the Challenger steer, grip, handle, and stop. Not all is perfect. It’s a whopper of a car—as it had to be, being based on a chopped Charger platform. And through the curves it does feel as big as a UPS truck. Of course, the advantage is that the Challenger has room for four proper-sized adults and has a trunk Tony Soprano would love.

No rear ’chute

It’s got a bigger wing than Air Force One. You could serve lunch for five on it without anyone touching plates. It helps to add roughly 900 pounds of extra downforce at speed. And at 150 mph, you could drive upside down on the ceiling of the Lincoln Tunnel, and you’d stay up there. This is the Viper ACR, short for American Club Racer. It’s for those serious about hammering their Viper around the racetrack on weekends—or looking über cool outside their local trattoria. The wing is just one element of a wild performance package for Dodge’s supercar. For an extra $12 grand, you get a two-piece carbon front splitter, that seven-position carbon-fiber wing, forged-aluminum wheels, adjustable KW shocks, new StopTech rotors, and a front antiroll bar thicker than an Olsen twin’s forearm. There’s no extra power—heck, that’s the last thing it needs. Now it just goes very fast around corners. 60

HENNESSEY VENOM 1000 DODGE VIPER

You have to be out of the automotive loop if you haven’t read anything on the Hennessey Viper, which has been highlighted, tested, and pushed into competition with other tuners—mostly in Venom 1000 twin-turbo trim—by nearly every other reputable magazine on the automotive stage. The stats procured have been nothing but stellar, preserving the Venom 1000’s spot as the leader of the pack. By the numbers: 1,000 hp, 1,100 lb-ft of torque, zero-to-60 in 2.5 seconds, the quarter mile in 9.75 seconds at 148 mph, and a top speed more than 250 mph—complete with a two-year/24,000-mile limited warranty. All for around $200,000. The numbers are so dumbfounding, and the horsepower per dollar quotient is so out of whack, that you actually feel sorry for people driving the $1.5-million Bugatti Veyron.

FERRARI

F430

The upcoming Ferrari California is going to be a landmark car. No doubt about it. Ferrari’s first front-engined V-8, first doubleclutch ’box, first fold-into-thetrunk hardtop. But the big question: will it be as good as the F430? This mid-engined projectile still sets the benchmark as the world’s most usable supercar. Yes, Porsche’s 911 Turbo comes close, but it’s not this pretty. Aston Martin’s DB9 is pretty but nothing like this thrilling to drive. And a thrill to drive it is, courtesy of its screaming 490-hp flat-plane crank V-8, its steering-wheel-mounted manettino switch that fine-tunes the car’s traction-control setup, adjustable suspension, and brakes that could stop time. And if the F430 twins—the Coupe F1 or Spider—aren’t hard edged enough for you, there’s always the slimmeddown and stripped-out 503-hp F430 Scuderia to charge your adrenaline. 64

This is the bad boy of the Ferrari lineup. Its magnificent Enzo-based 6.0-liter V-12 packs a 612-hp punch to the kidneys that sees standstill-to-60mph sprinting dispatched in a dragster-like 4.2 seconds. Yes, it’ll cruise the autostrada at a rock steady 150 mph—it tops out at more than 196 mph—but it’ll also lay lines of smoke-belching black rubber if the hooligan in you needs satisfying. This is a real Doctor Jekyll/Mr. Hyde machine: it’s happy to dawdle menacingly around town, yet will explode when the lightning-fast paddle-shift six speeder is clicked down two notches. And the sound it makes as the tach needle kisses the 8,400-rpm redline can make grown men burst into tears. The edgy Pininfarina styling has had its fair share of critics, but to our eyes it is the very definition of the term bella macchina— beautiful machine.

Four-seat versatility Stretch-limo proportions

With its nondescript, cube-of-tofu styling, Ferrari’s four-seat 612 Scaglietti probably won’t rotate heads on South Beach. And that’s the way 612 owners like it. Hence the reason most are painted black, dark blue, or battleship gray. But here is one of the great-driving Ferraris, one of its finest gran turismos. Powered by a thundering 5.7-liter V-12, producing 540 hp and 434 lb-ft of torque, it’s good for zero-to-60 sprints in 4.1 seconds. Top speed? A hair off 200 mph. And when the tach needle climbs, the big V-12 sounds as magical as Pavarotti at his best. For 2009, driving a 612 becomes even more involving, thanks to the addition of the latest version of the F1 SuperFast semiautomatic gearbox. It provides the same shift times—around 100 milliseconds— as the 599 GTB. The ’09s also come with a manettino switch on the steering wheel to fine-tune the traction-control setup. 66

FERRARI

CALIFORNIA It’s the most groundbreaking new Ferrari since the Dino. The most exciting since the Enzo. The most technically advanced … ever. Just look at the long list of Ferrari firsts that come with the remarkable new California: first mid-front engined V-8, first folding-aluminum hardtop, first direct-injection engine, first double-clutch direct-shift-gearbox-style semi-auto transmission.

And when it goes on sale in 2009 after its world debut at the Paris Salon auto show in October, expect it to have a waiting list longer than any Ferrari in history. While rumors of a new “fourth model” Ferrari have been swirling around the industry for the past couple of years, the real surprise is where the California will sit in the range. Bets were that this would be

the new smaller, entry-level model positioned below the F430—a modern-day Dino to take on Aston’s V8 Vantage and Porsche’s 911 Turbo in the $120,000 to $140,000 territory. Not so. While pricing won’t likely be announced until closer to launch date, expect the California to come in above the $216-grand F430 Spider.

Bulky rear end

Pictured above in Azzurro California blue, Ferrari ‘s first fully retractable hardtop convertible can go from shady to sunny in a stellar 15 seconds.

The jury, alas, is still out on Pininfarina’s styling work with the new coupe/convertible. At issue is the rear, which has to be deep and expansive enough to accommodate a folding hardtop and provide decent luggage space. But it’s hard not to drool over the stunning front end, with its chiseled lines, swept-back headlamps, and hint of 2002 575M Maranello grin.

Even the portly rear has some gorgeous detailing, like the stacked dual exhausts and taillights that flow forward along the top of the rear deck. Powering the new California is a heavily redesigned version of the F430’s 4.3-liter V-8 fitted with a Bosch-Ferrari developed direct-injection system that will boost power to 460 hp and deliver close to 370 lb-ft of torque.

Couple that to the new rearmounted seven-speed, doubleclutch, semi automatic and zero-to60-mph sprinting should come in fewer than four seconds, with top a speed close to 200 mph. One thing’s for sure, a whole lot of Ferrari enthusiasts will be California dreamin’ over the coming months.

The most groundbreaking new Ferrari since the Dino. The most exciting since the Enzo. The most technically advanced ever.

FERRARI

HAMANN 599 GTB

You may surmise that the Germans are horsepower freaks from the automobiles they manufacture (just look at the SL65 Black series). And they don’t take themselves any less seriously when it comes to tuning. Just look at what happens when an Italian exotic is “refined” by the German tuner Hamann: the product is pure driving euphoria. Take the Hamann-tuned 599 GTB , which retains its nearly perfected engine and suspension setup but gains a bold new body kit, much larger 21-inch rims and tires, and 53 more ponies. From the chin spoiler back to the rear diffuser, the look is edgier and more sculpted than Michelangelo’s David. The rims are massive, glossy black, and come with tires big enough to go on a monster truck—245/30ZR-21s up front and 345/25ZR-21s in the rear. (626) 336-7770, www.hamann-motorsport.com

MANSORY STALLONE

More showy than Paris Hilton and packed with more power than Rocky or Rambo put together, the Mansory Stallone, based off the Ferrari 599 GTB, is a car that will not slip under the radar, especially any cop’s. It’s too bad—with 720 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, this thing could mean the difference between making that late-night matinee or just missing the previews—but most likely you have too many gawkers and gazers to get ahead in traffic. You cannot expect anything else from an auto that revels in its exposed-carbonfiber cladding, a racecar-like nose and rear diffuser, and a hand-stitched ostrich-leather interior. If the view doesn’t hold their interest, the shriek of the supercharger and the bellow from the new stainless-steel exhaust will. (310) 659-4050, www.mansory.com

NOVITEC ROSSO 430 SCUDERIA

The Ferrari 430 Scuderia is already more balanced than a Lean Cuisine frozen dinner. But like those people who douse their meals in butter and salt, and maybe even deep-fry them after that, Novitec Rosso feels like the Scuderia needs more flavor, in the form of two superchargers and a more beautifully sculpted and lowered body. Out the tuner fryer pops a 717-hp beast of an automobile that bests the “everyday” Scuderia by 207 hp, good enough for 60 in 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 216 mph. To keep all that new found “flavor” in harmony with the rest of the car, Novitec Rosso has added lowering springs and wider rims and tires. At $74,000 plus the cost of car, some may carp that they are messing with a perfect equilibrium; others wouldn’t want their Ferrari done any other way. (310) 203-3900, www.cecwheels.com

FISKER

KARMA

The upcoming Fisker Karma combines sleek, sexy supercar styling with cutting-edge, plug-in hybrid technology. Of course, you’d expect nothing less when the CEO of the company, Henrik Fisker, designed the shape of the Aston DB9 and BMW Z8. Fisker is smart in having gone for a fourdoor sport-sedan design, rather than a less relevant Tesla-style two-seater. He’s also smart in having teamed up with Quantum Technologies whom have already developed a hybrid-drive system for the military. The way the Karma works is that a bank of lithium-ion batteries will power electric motors on each rear wheel. Charge them up from a home plug and the Karma will run for up to 50 miles between charges. At 51 miles, a small gas engine kicks in to add juice to the battery pack. Fisker plans to have the first cars on the road by late 2009, with a starting price of around $80,000. 74

On the face of it, asking $80,000 for a Mustang seems like something you might hear on April Fools’ Day. But then you hear it’s a Shelby Mustang and one that pays homage to the 1968 KR “King of the Road” muscle car and it clicks. And with production limited to 1,746 cars, Shelby fans see “investment potential” written all over it. They shouldn’t hold their breath. Essentially the KR is a warmed-over version of the $46-grand Shelby GT500 Mustang, made visually different with a ’68 KR-inspired nose section, a new aluminum hood, 40th-anniversary badging, and forged 18-inch alloys. A cold-air intake and a stainless exhaust help give the 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 an extra 40 ponies—max power is now an impressive 540 hp—while suspension mods sharpen the handling. And like the GT500, it’s a blast to drive.

GUMPERT

APOLLO

The Gumpert Apollo will certainly catch your attention when it explodes into your rearview at 224 mph. The first creation of former Audi Motorsports boss Roland Gumpert, this midengined, carbon-fiber-bodied rocket ship looks like an exile from the Le Mans starting grid. And Herr Gumpert makes no apologies for its racecar compromises—like having to remove the steering wheel to climb aboard. Power comes from a twin-turbo 4.2-liter V-8 from Audi’s RS6 that’s been bumped up to 650 hp through partner, German Audituning meisters, MTM. Feed in the power with the car’s heavyweight clutch and you’ll hit 60 from zero in less than three seconds. Is there a hybrid Apollo on the horizon? At the recent Nürburgring 24 Hour, Gumpert entered a hybridelectric racer with a 3.3-liter V-8, coupled to a 100kW electric motor delivering 630 hp. We bet it had electrifying performance. 76

ICONIC

GTR ROADSTER

If you want to win Best of Show at every local old-car gathering, it’s going to cost your $600 grand. That’s what Long Island-based Iconic Motors is charging for its work-of-art GTR Roadster. While that might seem a little steep for what, on the face of it, looks like a 427 Cobra seen through a funfair Hall of Mirrors, the car is nothing less than rolling sculpture. Its chassis is made of highstrength chromoly, and the carbon-fiber passenger tub is clad with body panels made of an immensely strong carbon sandwich. Now open up the forwardhinging front clip to reveal a mirror-finished, hand-built 6.9-liter V-8 said to deliver a massive 800 hp. And if that won’t wow the crowds, the exposed gearshift workings and the power-sliding gas cap will. Iconic talks of zeroto-60-mph sprinting in 2.8 seconds and a 200-mph top speed. With 800 hp moving just 2,300 pounds, we kinda believe them. 78

With an anticipated zero-to-60 time of well less than five seconds, it’ll be the fastest volume-production Jaguar ever. Add in stiffer, tauter suspension, bigger brakes, and 20-inch rubber, the XFR should have the handling to match its hero performance. Subtle, rather than over-the-top styling tweaks, like a deeper front spoiler, hood-mounted vents, rocker extensions, and quad tailpipes, should, hopefully, keep the new Jag off the cop-car radar. Inside, expect grippier sports seats and more black leather than Madonna’s closet. Not that the regular XF and XF Supercharged for ’09 will be too shabby. They should also get the new 5.0-liter V-8 with power hikes over the current models. Now explain to us again why Ford sold Jag? www.duPontREGISTRY.com

XJ PORTFOLIO

English rockers Queen could well have been describing the target buyer of Jag’s new Portfolio version of its grand XJ flagship with its 1989 rock anthem “I Want It All.” With the Portfolio, they certainly get it all: hand-milled aluminum power vents on the front fenders, 20-inch alloys, rich oak-wood veneers, more leather than Ozzy Osbourne’s walk-in, and some gorgeous paint colors—celestial black and Astral gold. All very Bentley-esque. And the flagship XJ certainly has the pace to go with grace, courtesy of its 4.2-liter supercharged V-8 that delivers a hearty 400 horses. That’ll glide it to 60 from rest in a speedy 5.0 seconds. Beneath that sleepy, classic styling, the XJ is a bit of a technical tour de force, with its aerospace-inspired glued and riveted aluminum monocoque and lightweight suspension. There’s a more radical XJ on the way, but until then, this Portfolio is

XKR PORTFOLIO

This is one pretty kitty. And with some serious claws too. Power comes from a supercharged 4.2-liter V-8, delivering 420 hp through a lightning-fast six-speed ZF auto. Tap the paddle shifter for a quick kick down and the change is accompanied by the sexiest, raspiest throttle blip, perfectly matching revs to speed. And it’s easy to forget the XKR’s greatest performance attribute—its featherlight, yet super-rigid all-aluminum body shell. That makes the R coupe or convertible feel like it’s got 500 hp under that sloping hood. Talking of 500 hp, when the XFR sedan gets its new 5.0liter supercharged V-8 next year, expect a 500-hp XKR to be fairly close behind. In the meantime, Jag is catering for luxury lovers out there with a special edition XKR Portfolio. Just 385 examples—split between coupe and convertible—will be offered, kitted out with such goodies as a

special gray-metallic paint job, 20-inch rims, and a 525watt Bowers and Wilkins sound system. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .

KOENIGSEGG CCXR

eforsmitng B Per Greenc Exoti

The mindblowing Koenigsegg CCXR is arguably the world’s first eco-friendly, lean, “green” supercar machine.

As if it’s screaming “I am fast,” exposed carbon-fiber smothers the entire exterior of the CCXR.

The red interior trim adds a little pizzazz to the otherwise drab, all-black décor.

82

2009 Exotic Car Buyers Guide

It’s powered by a twin-supercharged V-8 packing an astonishing 1,018 hp. It can scream from standstill to 62 mph in a staggering 2.9 seconds. And it runs on … corn oil. Welcome to the mindblowing Koenigsegg CCXR, arguably the world’s first eco-friendly, lean, “green” supercar machine. But forget any notion you might have of this $2.4-million rocket ship being some hyperpowered Toyota Prius. There’s a reason this latest offering from the Swedish supercar maker has gone green—and it’s not to save the planet. It’s to serve up even more tire-frying power. You see this new Koenigsegg CCXR has been reengineered to run happily on E85

bioethanol fuel. This is made up of a cocktail of 85-percent bioethanol— usually produced from either corn, soybeans, or sugar beets—and 15-percent regular unleaded gas. The beauty of E85 isn’t just that engines that use it produce around 70-percent less carbon emissions compared to engines running on regular unleaded gasoline. Also, as the Koenigsegg techies discovered, because biofuel has a much higher octane and better cooling properties than regular gas—exhaust temperatures can drop by as much as 150ºC— they could modify the engine to run with a higher compression, a bigger boost pressure, and more spark advance. The result? A massive hike in horsepower, from 888 hp to that Bugatti Veyron-rivaling 1,018 hp, together with a muscle-packed 740 lb-ft of torque. Pedal to the metal, or carbon fiber in this case, the new CCXR will blast to 62 mph from rest in a breathtaking 2.9 seconds, and not quit accelerating till it’s reached its expected top speed of a staggering 257 mph. One thing’s for certain, you’re pretty much guaranteed not to see another CCXR in the line at the E85 pump. That’s because Koenigsegg plans to restrict production to just six examples, with two reportedly already sold. That makes Veyrons almost as common as Corollas. Well, kind of.

LAMBORGHINI

GALLARDO LP560-4 Only Lamborghini could endow its latest and greatest Gallardo, the LP560-4, with a “thrust” mode for its six-speed eGear semiautomatic transmission. And thrust is exactly what it does. So tap the eGear button marked “corsa” then push the button disengaging the traction control. Now, with your left foot hard on the brake pedal, mash the accelerator to the floor, which instantly zings the revs round to 5,000. Step off the brake, keeping your right foot hard in, and watch with jaw-dropping amazement, as the Lambo does a rock-out-of-a-catapult impersonation. Jeez, this is fast. Scary fast. Lambo throws out a zero-to-60-mph time of 3.5 seconds. Quarter mile? You’re looking at 11.5 at 127 mph. And the thing won’t quit till the speedo needle is kissing the 202-mph mark. The source of all this neck-snapping velocity is a new 5.2-liter V-10—up from 5.0-liters courtesy of bigger cylinder bores—with new direct-fuel injection.

And before you ask, no, this isn’t a reworked 5.2-liter Audi V-10, despite the similar capacity and cylinder count. The new V-10 pumps out a massive 552 hp at 8,000 rpm—some 40 more than the previous Gallardo motor, and 29 more than the V-10 that motivated last year’s special-edition Gallardo Superleggera. And while the new Gallardo is faster and more powerful than before, it’s also greener than Kermit. Through a combo of weight reduction, improved aerodynamics, and a more efficient V-10, the LP’s fuel consumption and carbon emissions are reduced by some 18 percent. It even gets 23 to the gallon on the highway. Exterior changes include a more thrusting,

Reventón-style snout, and a resculpted rear diffuser—said to improve highspeed stability by 30 percent—plus allnew LED head- and taillights. And the beauty of this new Gallardo is that despite all this amazing new technology, the sticker remains the same at $201,000. We’ll take two.

Poseurs’ paradise Advert for Versace

You have your Versace sunglasses, your Versace jeans, your Versace belt; so why not have a Versace Lamborghini to go with them? Later this year you’ll be able to have exactly that; a pastel white Murciélago LP640 Roadster with the Versace Greek god motif on the lower part of the door. Very haute couture. Adding a little bit of substance to this overdose of style is the transparent engine cover that’s unique to the Versace Murcie Roadster. Thankfully Lambo drew the line at having Versace-logoed engine covers for the 631-hp 6.5-liter V-12. Don’t knock it; while other supercar makers are suffering, it’s raking in the euros by continually introducing special editions and variations on the Lambo theme. Think Reventón. Think Superleggera. Think Spyder. Next up, the SV. 90

REVENTÓN

The good news is that Lamborghini is building 20 of its F-22 Raptor fighter-jet-inspired Reventón supercars, each priced at an eye-popping one million euro—or roughly $1.5 million. The bad news is, alas, they’re all sold, no doubt with a prearranged slot at the 2015 Barrett-Jackson auction. Investment potential— who needs gold bars? To justify its stratospheric sticker, the Reventón comes with a completely redesigned carbon-fiber body with more angles than a Picasso print. And while you’d think that after forking out $1.5 million you’d want the car painted lime green so everyone would notice; Lamborghini thinks otherwise. That’s why all 20 Reventóns will come in a dull, flat, stealthy shade of battleship gray. Climb aboard and the fighterjet association continues with 3-D liquid-crystal displays showing need-to-know info, such as lateral and accelerative g-forces. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

BF PERFORMANCE GT660

There are two styles of rear wings that you can get on the GT660. One is of a subtle, Lamborghini-ish design. And the other looks like it was ripped right off a Boeing 747. Yep it’s that big. It is hard to imagine that the racing-style rear wing would cause any down force. In fact, you might think that a draft could heave the rear wheels right off the ground. BF Performance ensures that its aerodynamic kit does work and, in conjunction with the side skirts, leaves a nice impression on anyone’s corneas. Not simply made for looks, the BF Performance GT 660 is tweaked to make 595 hp and 493 lb-ft of torque; 25 more hp and 14 lb-ft more torque than the regular Murciélago. www.bf-performance.com

PREMIER4509 MURCIÉLAGO

The problem with exclusivity is that you can never seem to truly obtain it. Take the Lamborghini Murciélago, which recently passed 3,000 in total sales. So you pay $300 grand for a car only to have the guy down the street driving the same exact one or worse, the better LP version! This is where tuners like Premier4509 come in to take your everyday, run-of-the-mill Lamborghini and turn it into a more exotic ride. Premier4509 is now offering a performance-based, aerodynamically enhanced kit for your Lamborghini Murciélago. The kit will be limited to 300 units, each with their own numbered serial plate. Price for the kit is $28,000, which may seem steep to some, but that’s small money for the right to exclusivity. (562) 633-0012, www.premier4509.com

UNDERGROUND RACING TWIN-TURBO GALLARDO

92

2009 Exotic Car Buyers Guide

Not many small tuner shops even ponder modifying exotics; they fear losing a large chunk of their funds on one project gone awry. Underground Racing, on the other hand, takes the Lamborghini bull by the horns and then forces air down its throat; the product of that force-feeding twin-turbochargers is a nasty 500-hp increase over the already whiplash-creating 512 hp out of the standard 5.0-liter V-10. To make sure the car doesn’t suddenly practice a Kristi Yamaguchi-like single axel, the driver can control the boost electronically from the driver’s seat. The push from the turbos comes on early and hard and continues throughout the revs, propelling the car to more than 155 mph in the quarter mile—putting the Underground Racing twin-turbo Gallardo into the special collection of rare, very powerful exotics. LAND ROVER

RANGE ROVER SPORT S/C A top-spec Range Rover Sport Supercharged, with its 20inch rims shod with wafer-thin rubber, looks more like an exile from the customizer shop than a tough-as-nails offroader. Don’t underestimate it: that Land Rover badge on the steering wheel isn’t there for show. Point its designer nose at a Moab rock face and it’ll climb it like a mountain goat on Red Bull. Set the amazing Terrain Response System to reflect what’s beneath the wheels—snow, mud, sand, grass, or rocks— and it’ll work the traction control, stability control, and electronic throttle to claw its way through. Don’t underestimate that Sport badge either. With a Jag-based 4.2-liter supercharged V-8 up front, producing 400-hp and a meaty 410 lb-ft of twist, it’ll rush to 60 in 7.2 seconds. And despite its 5,600-pound bulk, it feels nimble and agile through the curves, and rides as smoothly as most sports sedans.

If the road to your Aspen ski lodge gets a little snowed in. Or the track down to your Maui beachfront has gotten way too muddy, there’s only one vehicle you need. A Range Rover. Almost 40 years of conquering the world’s toughest trails means this goanywhere Brit four-by-four can cope with anything you throw at it. But it’s the Rover’s duality that sets it apart from the luxury SUV crowd. Have mud up to its door mirrors in a morning; then at night, after a little hose work, it’ll get you parked up front at that swanky nightspot. Go for the all-bells-and-whistles Supercharged model with its big Jaguar-derived V-8, delivering 400 hp, and you’ll think you’re driving a high-luxe sedan, albeit a tall-riding one. Yes, it’s overweight and has a thirst like a Welsh rugby player. And despite its size there’s only seating for five. But it’s still the best luxury four-byfour by far.

LEXUS

IS F

You may want to rethink that stereotype of all Lexus products being serenely silent, soulless slabs of snooze. Two minutes behind the wheel of an IS F will throw that concept right out the window. Here is a 416-hp runt of the litter, a howling, screaming, wheel-spinning hooligan rolling on 19-inch forged BBS alloys. The suits at Lexus told the engineers they wanted something to kick the M3’s butt, and that’s exactly what they got. Based on the slick IS350 sedan, the F gets a version of the 5.0-liter V-8 from the fancy LS 600h L hybrid, coupled to an eight-speed paddleshifter automatic. Floor it and you’ll blast to 60 in just 4.6 seconds and keep going till you hit 168 mph. And oh, what a noise; mix artillery fire with a Florida thunder boomer and you’re only marginally close to describing the music emerging from the F’s funky, stacked quad tailpipes. Are we having fun yet? 98

LEXUS

LF-A

First came the LF-A concept at Detroit in 2005, followed by another, more-finished concept at Detroit in 2007, followed by a convertible concept at Detroit 2008. Then there was the car, still officially a concept, taking part in a 24-hour race at the Nürburgring this past May (it crossed the line 121st). When Lexus’s new $200grand halo supercar finally appears in production guise— we’re guessing Detroit ’09— instead of loud applause, there could well be stifled yawns. Pity because the LF-A is likely to be a stunner. Word is that it’ll be powered by a new 4.8-liter screaming V-10, producing more than 500 hp, with a second version available with the 5.0-liter V-8 gaselectric hybrid powertrain from the LS 600h sedan. Expect the coupe version to come roaring on to the market next summer followed, in 2010, by the roadster. Lexus’s challenge: convincing well-

heeled buyers to pick it over a Ferrari F430. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..

Old before its time

Lexus got pooh-poohed when it unveiled its techno tour de force LS 600h L hybrid. Too expensive and no real benefit in fuel efficiency, they said. But critics underestimated the “Prius Effect” and the smug satisfaction it would give a corporate CEO in having the worker bees know the boss has switched to a hybrid. Albeit one costing a cool $104,000. The effect hasn’t gone unnoticed at BMW and Mercedes, whom will both introduce hybrid versions of their flagship models in ’09. That said, the Lexus does go a teeny bit over-the-top in its quest for performance perfection. Instead of a small V-6 coupled to a battery-fed electric motor—to give the combined power of a V-8—it goes for a mongo 5.0-liter V-8 for the sensation of V-12 power. Who cares that it only averages 20 to the gallon around town and 22 on the highway? Darn it, it’s a hybrid.

The cute-as-a-button Lotus Elise is still the closest you can get to driving a street-legal racecar without spending $192-grand on a Porsche 911 GT2. But two-seat go-karts aren’t always the blast they’re cracked up to be, especially in the daily commute—as anyone who has experienced the Elise’s 6,500-rpm on-cam power explosion can attest. So enter the Elise SC, with SC short for “supercharged”. Instead of the extra 19 horses being the reason to celebrate, it’s more the additional 23 lb-ft of torque. It makes the new Elise’s progress a lot less frenetic, easier to live with. Of course, it’s still blisteringly quick. With the new Eaton blower puffing away, the SC will rush to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds (0.4-sec faster than the non-supercharged) and hit 100 in 10.7. The $8,230 price hike over the regular Elise might seem steep, but the benefits are huge.

EVORA

No, we’re not hot on the Evora name either. Seems it’s a city in Portugal, so at least we should be thankful they didn’t call it Lisbon. Whatever its designation, this striking two-plus-two GT is a welcome addition to the Lotus lineup. Measuring 22-inches longer than an Elise (and threeinches shorter than a 911), it’s the first practical Lotus since the gorgeous Elan Plus 2 debuted in 1967. Powered by the same Toyota 3.5-liter V-6 used in the, err, Camry, this 2,976-pound projectile is said to be good for subfive second zero-to-60 sprints and a 160-mph top speed. Power is rated at 280 hp—thankfully, 12hp up on the mom ’n’ pop Camry. While the Evora is badged as a two-plus-two, we’ll bet more buyers will go for the straight two seater with extra storage space. Europe gets the first cars next summer, with the United States following in late ’09. We’re guessing at a $70K sticker. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

GRANTURISMO S

It’s called the “S”, but you won’t find an S badge anywhere on its bodywork. So if you’re looking to identify the latest and greatest version of Maserati’s stunning GranTurismo coupe, just gaze at the wheels. They’re new 20s, featuring the Maserati trident emblem for spokes, with a more open look of the red Brembo calipers and pizza-sized rotors. Hoist the hood and you’ll see a new, uprated 4.7-liter wet-sump V-8 with red-painted cam covers. Power increases by 28 ponies to 433, with a hike in torque from 339 to 361 lb-ft. Add in new software for the six-speed manual/auto gearbox and you’ll see 100-millisecond shifts when in Manual Sport mode. And the real party piece? That would be the Sport button on the dash that opens a bypass valve in the exhaust to give you the full-on, ripping-canvas sound track. The S arrives in November with a $135,000 price tag. 102

What’s not to love?

It’s taken awhile, but Maserati’s big, four-door Quattroporte has finally blossomed into the magnifico ultra-luxury sedan it always deserved to be. So much so that the latest Quattroporte S, due on the streets in early November, comes close to such sedan superstars as Bentley’s Flying Spur and Merc’s S600 in terms of hedonistic luxury coupled with driver gratification. Distinguished by its vertical chrome grille louvers, which connect it visually to the new GranTurismo, the new S comes with an uprated version of the Ferrari-derived V-8. Capacity goes up from 4.2 to 4.7 liters, with a power hike from 400 hp to 425. Floor the throttle, and sit back in wonderment as this 4,400-pound piece of rolling sculpture rushes to 60 mph in a smidge longer than five seconds. Bigger front rotors and larger 19-inch Pirellis add to the driving delights, as does the all-new Bose multimedia/nav system. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

MAYBACH

57/62

When it comes to the world’s ritziest sedans, buyers, it seems, aren’t too bothered about subtlety. Hence the mile-long waiting list for a Rolls-Royce Phantom, and no waiting list at all for a Mercedes-Benz Maybach. Seems if you have it, you flaunt it. Despite hopes of offloading 1,000 Maybachs a year, 2007 saw only 400 leave the factory. And 2008 is going to be worse. The problem is that this über-luxury liner looks just too much like a stretched S-Class. Which is a pity, because once you step inside, you’re entering a world of total decadence and indulgence. The reclining, leg-raising rear seats of the longwheelbase Maybach 62, for example, are as comfy and cosseting as any you’ll find in a private jet. As for the quality of the craftsmanship: the look, touch, and feel of its furnishings simply defies comparison. Mercedes says it has no plans to shelve the brand.

Think of it as the world’s most expensive tanning booth. Press a button inside the new $1.4-million Maybach Landaulet half sedan/half convertible, and 20 seconds later you can be soaking up the rays. Landaulets were big back in the ’20s and ’30s when they were seen as a way of making a convertible from a high-end sedan without too much structural work. Trouble is, these days, anyone who can afford $1.4-mill tends not to want the riffraff, paparazzi, or would-be assassins looking in at them. Which begs the question: who is going to buy this magnificent Maybach? Wedding planners? New York tour guides? Rumor has it that only 20 examples will be built, with most headed to the Middle East. Based on the top-dollar, twin-turbo Maybach 62S, the Landaulet will only come in a choice of two colors—Baltic black or Nevada silver. Alas, green isn’t on the color palette—

Mercedes folly?

www.duPontREGISTRY.com

MERCEDES-BENZ Is it three years since Mercedes shook up the snoozy four-door sedan market with its coupeshaped CLS? So with all those original cars now coming off their three-year leases, it was time to do a little CLS freshening. It got surprisingly little. The old four-bar grille has been ditched in favor of a more dramatic two-bar with gray mesh. Larger outside mirrors, a new rear bumper, and arrow-shaped LED rear lights. Throw in a sportier three-spoke steering wheel and white on silver gauges and that’s your lot. There was certainly no need to touch the awesome 6.2-liter AMG-developed and -built V-8, which in the CLS63 packs 507 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. Coupled with its seven-speed AMG Speedshift auto with F1-style shift paddles, the $95,425 CLS delivers truly breathtaking performance, thundering to 60 in just 4.3 seconds.

CLS63 AMG

Yes, we noticed it too; Merc’s E-class is starting to look like a bit of a geezer. While the 507-hp $86,875 AMG-powered E63 certainly has no trouble burning up the shuffleboard court, its styling is starting to look, how can we put this, stale. Not to worry: spring 2009 sees the unveiling of an all-new E with a body that looks a lot like a new S-Class that’s been left in the drier just a little too long. The first new Es should start arriving next summer, though don’t expect the next E63 AMG till early 2010. But if you just have to have a four-door rocket ship in the mode of BMW’s M5 and Audi’s S6—or a four-door wagon— the current E63 will not disappoint. It’ll deliver 4.3-second zero-to-60 sprints till the cows come home and, if you opt for the $8,600 performance package, you can see 186 mph on the speedo. That’s faster than a speeding shuffleboard disk.

E63 AMG

Nothing defines the term “pocket rocket” more than Mercedes’s $65,175 Mini-Me-sized SLK55. Not that there’s anything Mini-Me about the throaty 335-horse 5.5-liter AMG-massaged V-8 that powers it. The mild freshening it got for ’09, built on the car’s scaled down McLaren SLR pointy-nose look, still spins heads where ever it’s seen. But more important, it got a clever, new direct-steering system to make the 55 even more agile by decreasing lock-to-lock distance to just 2.16 twirls. While the baby Benz doesn’t have the agility and litheness of the Boxster S, it makes up for it with the sheer grunt of its 376 lb-ft of twist. Catapulting out of tight curves and zooming past slower traffic when you see the gap ahead is a thing of true beauty. And remember that Porsche has to offer two models—Boxster and Cayman—to offer the folding-metal-top versatility of the SLK.

MERCEDES-BENZ

C63 AMG

Call it star wars. The Merc C63 AMG with the big three-pointy star on its grille, up against the BMW M3 and the current Audi RS4. Tough call. But an hour in the C63’s hot seat will have you on bended knee proposing marriage to this 451hp Scud missile on wheels. Call it crazy-stupid fast. Call it lunatic fringe. But it might just be the most fun you can have with four seats and an engine. The source of all this lunacy is the 6.2-liter AMG-built V-8 you’ll find in pretty much every Merc-AMG model in the range. Yes, those 451 horseys are fun, but the gunpowder in the firework is the 443 lb-ft of torque. This is what fires you out of the corner; it’s what launches you past that lumbering 18-wheeler on a two-lane twisty; it’s what thrusts you to 60 from rest in 4.3 seconds. At $55,975 it is a performance bargain.

CL65 AMG

If you’re going to talk the torque, there’s one number you need to hear: 738. That, to you technically minded folk, is the number of pound-feet of torque the monstrous twin-turbo 6.0-liter V-12, powering the $200,575 CL65 AMG coupe, delivers between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm. To put that into some kind of context, the V-8 in Ferrari’s 200mph F430 Scuderia cranks out 347 lb-ft—less than half that of the big Merc. Mash the pedal to the floor and you unleash a torrent of torque that catapults the big CL from rest to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. The electronically limited 155-mph top speed is almost an insult to a car like this. Yet the car never ever feels overpowered or on the ragged edge; think Gulfstream G5 on takeoff. Even in the metal, the CL looks nothing more than elegantly powerful, like hard muscles beneath a Hugo Boss tux. It makes a worthy Merc flagship.

ML63 AMG

To go from regular a Merc ML to an $89,225 ML63, AMG sends it to the gym for a major workout. It comes back with a front end that can only be described as brutal. The new lower fascia, for example, features a massive, all-black air intake that looks big enough to ingest large family pets. Along the sides, the regular ML’s blistered wheel arches has AMG ones added to them. And they cover the 21-inch AMG rims that could have come off Ben-Hur’s chariot. At the rear, stormdrain-sized quad tailpipes are separated by a chromed under guard, with all sorts of spoilers and blacked-out lights adding to the bad-boy look. Power comes from the well-utilized AMGbuilt 6.2-liter V-8, packing 510-hp and driving all four wheels through a 7-speed paddle-shifter auto. Sprints from rest to 60 take a mere 4.8 seconds but, ouch, that 11-mpg city stings.

And to save weight, the SL’s complex folding-metal roof is replaced with a carbon-fiber hardtop. It’s a cliché remark to say this car looks like Darth Vader’s ride is ready. The Brabus-built Bullit Black Arrow is too good for that. And besides, even Darth Vader couldn’t afford this car. Some may wonder why anyone would pay $547,442 (as of this writing) for a Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The answer is lurking under the just-plain-cool matte black paint job and inside the huge 6.2-liter twinturbocharged V-12 that has been crammed under the hood. The V-12 is the same as used in the S600 and makes an incredible 730 hp and a Veyron-beating 974 lb-ft of torque; too bad Brabus decided to limit the torque to 811 lb-ft. The car gets a new body kit that is aerodynamically prepared for very high speeds, comes with new coil overs for very fast corners, and receives new brakes for some very impressive stops. CARLSSON CK50

With a level of power that slots nicely between the SL550’s 382 hp and the SL63’s 518 hp, the Carlsson CK50, based off the 2009 SL, makes a nice, meaty 435 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. That is good enough to drop the zero-to-60 time down to 5.1 seconds and up the top speed to more than 180 mph. Lowering the ride height and adding lighter rims makes for a flatter, sportier jaunt, without making the ride jarring. The exterior is pushed to the aggressive limit via a body kit that has a ground-scraping front apron (compete with a new grill, with more mesh than a screened-in porch), a rear diffuser, and a sexy rear wing. Like all Carlsson vehicles, the interior can be customized to the customer’s wishes. American Express? That’ll do nicely. (866) 792-3191, www.ggituning.com

MERCEDES-BENZ Combining the Lorinser CL cosmetic package with its LV-12 biturbo performance kit is like that fairy-tale Beauty and the Beast. First, let’s look at the beast under the hood. A small amount of fine-tuning, done to the fuel-injection system, exhaust, superchargers, and the engine-control unit, brings out an extra 113 hp and 136 lb-ft of torque—for a total of 630 and 748, respectfully— from the already powerful and turbine-like 6.0-liter twin-turbo V-12. Beauty comes in the form of a air-cleaving body kit that consists of new exterior trim with small slits, gills, and slots. The rims grow in size and fill in those wheel wells. The interior is the normal Mercedes decadence and comfort. (866) 651-7555, www.lorinser.com

LORINSER CL600

Mad that the new SL65 Black Series will have more horsepower than your SLR 722? Renntech comes to the rescue with its new package for the old-heir-to-the-most-powerful-Benz-in-production title. Tinkering with the supercharged 5.5liter V-8 has pulled out another 90 hp for a total of 740 hp and a flabbergasting 735 lb-ft of torque. Although in no way is it a sleeper, the Renntech SLR is only visually differentiated via new 20-inch, 10-spoke wheels. Best news yet is that the $27,000 price tag on top of the car won’t break the bank. That is, if you can first afford an SLR. (561) 845-7888, www.renntechmercedes.com

RENNTECH PACKAGE 2

Similar to the gigantic S plastered on Superman’s chest, the Strut shield-like badge sits prominently in the center of the diamond-mesh and carbonfiber grille of the CL550. Like a pair of earrings and a matching necklace, the Strut carbon-fiber package is full of small tidbits that boldly let innocent bystanders know of the power lurking under the CL550’s hood. Carbon fiber is the theme and Strut makes sure there is plenty. Carbon fiber covers the spoiler and the hood vents and don’t forget about the carbon-fiber front air dam. Strut makes a regular Mercedes-Benz CL550 look like Clark Kent. (949) 361-9841, www.strutwear.com

NISSAN

GT-R

If we had a cent for every word that’s been written about Nissan’s groundbreaking GT-R supercar since its debut last December, we’d be giving handouts to Bill Gates. The car they call “Godzilla” has graced literally thousands of magazine covers, Internet sites, and young boys’ bedroom walls. And everything you’ve read about it is true—it’s a monster. Powered by a 480-hp, twinturbo 3.8-liter V-6, blasting its power to all four wheels through a six-speed manual/auto, it will zap to 60 in a time-warping 3.6 seconds and won’t quit till the engine is stuttering on the rev limiter at 193 mph. For $70 grand, it is the supercar bargain of the decade. Trouble is, just as we’re getting our heads around the sheer awesomeness of the thing, Nissan is planning to unleash a Spec V version early in ’09 with a rumored 520-hp, 440 lb-ft of torque, and weight down by

200 pounds. It’ll be GT-R fever all over again. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..

If you thought a Cinque was something Italians do their dish washing in, you’d be wrong. This is the latest creation from supercar maker Pagani, and the Cinque badge, which is Italian for “five” and is actually pronounced chinkway, indicates the number of these wild racers for the road Horacio Pagani will build. But don’t bother rushing to the phone with your platinum AmEx; all five have supposedly been sold at a cool $1.5 million a pop. The Cinque is in effect a road-going version of the racetrack-only Pagani Zonda R. Mercedes’s AMG division kindly detuned the Zonda R’s 7.3-liter V-12 they supply, from 750 to 678 hp. Now Cinque owners will have to make do with zero-to-60mph acceleration in “only” 3.4 seconds, along with a 217mph top speed. The lucky five will get a true exotic made of titanium, magnesium, and carbon fiber, with a little seat leather thrown in.

BOXSTER RS 60

Back in 1960 at the famed Sebring 12-hour race in Florida, it wasn’t a bigengined Ferrari or Maserati crossing the finish line first. It was a pip-squeak of a Porsche with an engine not much bigger than one you’d find in a yard mower. The little mid-engined Porsche RS 60 Type 718 was nothing less than a giant killer. It was the DNA of that original RS 60 that Porsche took when it created its special-edition version of the Boxster S, the RS 60 Spyder. Priced at $64,900, Porsche is building 1,960 of them, commemorating the racer’s Sebring victory year, and shipping 800 to the States. It is a sweet little package; like the racer, it’s painted silver with a bright red leather interior and comes with a modified exhaust to bump up the horsepower of the 3.4-liter flat-six by 8-hp to 303. It’s one more reason to trade in your old Boxster.

Sports cars just aren’t flying off the shelf like they used to. That’s why Porsche is constantly coming up with creative ways to keep enthusiasts interested. So, hot on the heels of the Boxster RS 60 limited edition comes the Cayman S Sport limited edition. A total of 700 of these cosmetically enhanced coupes will be built, of which the United States gets a paltry 100, priced at $69,900 a pop. With its fruity, bright orange paint—lime green is also offered, as are other choices—the car picks up some of the styling cues of the 911 GT3 RS, like the black wheels, black door mirrors, and black lettering along the base of the doors. A new exhaust adds an extra eight horses to the 3.4-liter flat-six’s tally, taking max power up to 303 hp. The car has also been lowered 0.4 inch and Porsche Active Suspension Management comes standard along with 19-inch

CAYENNE GTS Love it or hate it, the Cayenne has been a lifesaver for Porsche, providing it with a mountain of cash to go off and develop all those niche hotshots, like the 911 GT2 and GT3. But now there’s a Cayenne that inches just a teeny bit closer to capturing the sporting essence of a true Porsche. The new $70,900 Cayenne GTS is arguably the best-handling, most-fun-driving SUV on the planet. What it does is combine the muscley look of the megapriced Cayenne Turbo with the power of the regular V-8 “S”—with stiffer suspension and three-mode electronic shock control for sharper handling. Freer breathing also bumps the power of the 4.8liter V-8 to 405 hp, so zeroto-60 sprints are now covered in less than six seconds. Take your pick of six-speed manual or six-speed manual/ auto shifters, and revel in the GTS’s sharp handling and low-roll cornering. Okay, it’s

not a Cayman S, but you try putting a 42-inch flat screen in the back of a Cayman. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..

The question that gets asked a million times a day: so what’s the best all-around 911? Turbo? Nah, too David Beckham. GT2? Too hardcore. Base Carrera? Terrific, but a little too plentiful out there. Our choice? The awesome GT3. Okay, it’s still very much a street-legal racecar with all the cool track-star styling cues: a towering biplane rear wing, a thrusting front spoiler, pencil-thinspoked 19-inch alloys. But it is blessed with the most glorious, high-output version of the standard 911 Carrera Coupe’s 3.6-liter flat-six, packing 415 hp—up from 355. Nail the throttle and it’ll scream to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, redlining at a frenetic 8,400 rpm. Yet it’s wonderfully tractable, pulling like a train from a walking pace in fourth. The standard Porsche Active Suspension Management system also gives you a choice of the firmness setting, allowing you to have fun

on the track but not get beaten up on the drive home. It’s the best. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..

911 CARRERA Repeat after us: Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe. Get it right on your first try, and you win a prize. Despite its tongue-tieing title, Porsche’s dual-clutch PDK system is what takes Porsche’s latest 2009 911 Carrera up a notch or three in pure driving enjoyment. What it provides are gearshifts that are an impressive 60-percent swifter than with the previous Tiptronic S automatic. Plus, there are now seven speeds, instead of five, to spread the joy. The way it works is that one clutch

operates gears one, three, five, seven, and reverse, while clutch two serves gears two, four, and six. As the transmission runs through the gears, one clutch opens while the other slams shut. That’s what gives it the lightningfast shift speed. Mate this to what is essentially an all-new flat-six engine—Porsche claims every single component has either been replaced or redesigned—and the significance of this new ’09 911 becomes clearer. The engine itself features direct-

injection technology to increase power and performance, but also to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. Now the 3.6-liter in the base Carrera goes up from 325 hp to 345, while the Carrera S gets an extra 30 hp taking it to an impressive 385. The changes mean an almost 13-percent boost in fuel economy and more than 15-percent less carbon emissions in the base model.

On the road, a PDK-equipped Carrera S is simply an awesome machine. Zero-to-60-mph sprints are now down to 4.2 seconds, with the new, even louder exhaust resulting in the most spine-tingling howl. Pity they stuck with the old buttons on the wheel to shift gears manually, rather than switching to the more accepted shift paddles. And we’re still

no fans of the counterintuitive push-forward/pull-back action of the shift lever, rather than side to side. Pity too that the exterior changes for ’09 weren’t a little more extensive than new LED front and rear lights, revised front air intakes and outside mirrors, and new wheel designs. But as with every evolutionary change, the result is the best 911 yet.

9FF GT9

At approximately $854,000, the 9ff GT9 had its scopes set on beating the Veyron in both price and top speed, and although it accomplished both, it was still left in second place. Two hundred and fifty-four mph puts the GT9 ahead of the Veyron but still below the SCC Ultimate Aero TT, which got up to 255 mph in September 2007. Don’t mistake the GT9 as a tuned Porsche. Although it resembles a Porsche in skin, it is a completely different monster, retaining only two percent of the GT3 on which it is based. A 4.0liter flat-six produces 987 hp and an earth-shaking 711 lb-ft of torque. Numbers like that can get anyone in trouble, but don’t wait for the GT9’s stability and traction control to step in and save you because it doesn’t come with either. (970) 420-5470, ww.9ff.de

CHAMPION MOTORSPORT F77

Tired of the Porsche 911 Turbo S and its 480 hp? Probably not. However, a little more speed can never hurt an already amazing ride. That is what Pompano Beach, Florida-based Champion Motorsport had in mind when it developed the F77 package for the 997 coupe. Horsepower is up a hundred and torque is up another 125 lb-ft. The top speed reaches more than 200 mph and the zero-to-60 time drops down 0.2 seconds. The package is rounded out via a new suspension setup, a racier interior, and an aerodynamically enhanced body kit. The rear wing may be a tad ostentatious for some, but that is the price you have to pay for unbelieveable performance. (800) 775-2456, www.championmotorsport.com

ENCO 550GT BITURBO

Black rims might be the new fad, but rims that are dark as the deepest ocean trench—a place where fish are bioluminescent—are a rare find. The rims on the Cayenne 550GT Biturbo, from German tuner ENCO, are like a black hole, sucking in light and reflecting none; all that is visible are the hanging, red brake calipers. Add those black-lacquered 23-inch rims with the lowered and revised body, and you have a Cayenne that is actually appealing; you have the Cayenne 550GT Biturbo. Through some revised plumbing, the ENCO Porsche has a large jump in horsepower up to 543. That much extra power is good for a scant 4.9-second zero-to-60 time and a top speed of 175 mph. “Suffering succotash, the Sportec SPR1 super sports car is swift!” is just one of the many exclamatory statements that might pop out while running up to 60 mph in a scant three seconds in the Swiss supercar. At the heart of the car is an 802-hp 3.6-liter flat-six mated to a sixspeed manual transmission. That much power moving the light, nearly 3,000-pound car and its aerodynamically sound body means a top speed that sits in the 230-mph area, putting the SPR1 into the very rare upper echelon of supercars. Only 10 of these projectiles will ever be produced and the amount of customization available to each of these vehicles ensures that each Sportec SPR1 is as rare as they get. Based off the GT2, TechArt likes to describe the GTstreet RS as “like no other,” a goal it accomplishes in spades. With 691 hp and 634 lb-ft of torque, no one will ever call the car lacking in power. Power and speed are only a portion of the sports-car equation and TechArt is always willing to fill in the rest. This is accomplished through an aerodynamic kit that creates serious down force as speed rises. The new exterior not only adds to the performance but also brings out some cuttingedge, new looks for a Porsche. A set of 20-inch rims and Michelin Pilot Sport rubber glue the car down to the blacktop, pushing the TechArt GT street RS to the upper limits like the supercar it is. Not satisfied with the unremarkable visual adjustments provided by other Porsche tuners, Wicked Motor Works strives to make each one of its cars visually different from the rest. The Wicked-7 GT2 RS is a perfect example. Stretching the fenders an incredible four inches in the front and a whopping seven inches in the rear, the car takes on a more track-oriented aura. To add the must-have rear diffuser, Wicked redirected the exhaust, up and through the rear bumper and out quad-exhaust tips. Gills on the rear are for more than just looks; they help diffuse engine heat. And the wider openings on the front apron inhale more air than an opera singer between long notes. As Maybach fades to black, Rolls-Royce continues to go from strength to strength due to the continued, and accelerating, popularity of its XXL-sized Phantom among the world’s megarich. In 2007, the company broke through the magical 1,000-a-year barrier, selling 1,010 cars, with the Phantom accounting for 75 percent. And with the upcoming $250,000 “baby” Rolls due late in 2009, that number could double by 2010. Measuring more than 19 feet bow to stern, the Phantom makes a massive statement wherever it goes. The styling may be an acquired taste, but the hedonistic luxury it provides is easy to get used to. Under that Texas-sized hood beats a 453-hp 6.75-liter V-12 that can waft this 5,622pound leviathan from rest to 60 mph in just 5.7 seconds. Yet, despite its bulk, the Phantom is surprisingly nimble and agile through the turns.

First came the Phantom sedan. Then the Drophead Coupe. Now the third in the Rolls-Royce trilogy, the mighty Phantom Coupe. Measuring just an inch shorter than a Chevy Suburban and tipping the scales at a whopping 5,800 pounds, this Roller certainly makes an XXL-sized statement. As you’d expect, it’s based closely on the Drophead Coupe, with the cloth top replaced by a lightweight-aluminum lid. Power comes from the same 6.75-liter V-12 as the convertible and it delivers 453 hp and a massive 531 lb-ft of torque—75 percent of which is available from just 1,000 rpm. Open the power floodgates and the Coupe will lunge to 60 in just 5.6 seconds and cruise all day at a relaxed 150 mph. And cruising is its forte, as in breakfast in London, dinner in Monte Carlo. Filling up most of the space beneath that must-have optional brushedstainless-steel hood is the same whisper-quiet 6.75-liter 453-hp BMW V-12 that motivates the Phantom. It gives the Drophead Rolls truly regal performance, accelerating the car to 60 mph from rest in 5.6 seconds as if it were powered by hushed electric motors. RONN

SCORPION

Say ‘hello’ to the Scorpion

sn Ctar e B Gree on ati Innov

It looks like it could eat a Ferrari F430 for lunch. It’ll run from standstill to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and have a top speed of 200 mph. Power? That comes from a twin-turbo version of the latest 3.5-liter Acura VTEC V-6 from the 2009 TL Type-S, cranking out a tire shredding 450 hp. There’ll also be a non-turbo model, packing 285 hp. And here’s its real party piece: it’ll generate its own hydrogen on board, giving this eye-popping mid-engine two seater an impressive 40 mpg on the highway. Say “hello” to the Scorpion supercar from Texas-based Ronn Motor Company. The technology behind the car is pretty straight forward and has been around since kids started doing electrolysis experiments in eighth-grade science class. It’s just that no one has successfully applied it to the automobile. Yet. The way it works is that the car’s alter-

nator sends a jolt-ofvolts electrical charge through water stored in a small, 1.5-gallon tank on board. The charge fractures the water’s molecules and releases hydrogen. The hydrogen is then fed into the engine’s air-intake manifold and blended with gasoline. Clever computer software figures out the correct gas to hydrogen mix, which varies from 30 to 50 percent. An added bonus is that there are no dirty carbons in hydrogen, so there’s a significant reduction in carbon emissions. Ronn is working with a Tampa, Floridabased computer diagnostics company, Check Engine, which has developed a hydrogen generator it calls Hydrorunner G3 along with the clever computer technology to run it. The car shown in our photos was built by acclaimed California concept-

car developers, Metal Crafters, using a racecar-style chromemoly frame chassis, clad with a carbon-fiber body. Ronn plans to have the Scorpion in production in late 2008, with around 200 cars being built in the first full year. Prices will kick off at around $150,000. It should be one mean, green, schmokin’ machine.

ROUSH

MUSTANG 427-R

In the world of high-performance Mustangs, when it comes to getting a real big bang for your buck, it’s hard to beat Roush’s 427-R package. The heart of the 427 is the big ROUSHcharger supercharger, together with new intake manifolds, intercooler, and air-induction system, which amps up the power of Ford’s three-valve 4.6-liter V-8 to a galloping 430 horses. That’ll get you from standstill to 60 mph in around 4.5 seconds and through the quarter-mile in the middle 12s. A complete suspension makeover with recalibrated springs and shocks, new front and rear sway bars, and big 14-inch rotors front and rear, give it the kind of handling a stock Mustang can only dream about. Then there’s the “look” that comes courtesy of Roush’s fourpiece aero body kit and 18-inch chromed alloys. The complete 427-R package will set you back $15,599—a small price to pay for a pony with kick.

MUSTANG P-51A

Jack Roush has built some pretty special Mustangs over the years. Combining his passion for fast Fords and a love for old airplanes, Roush recently announced a limited run of 151 Mustang coupes he’s christened P-51A. The $62,753 P-51A is the designation of Roush’s personal, much-loved exWorld War II Mustang fighter plane that he flies at every opportunity. In keeping with its special badging, the Ford is the highest-horsepower Mustang that Roush has ever produced. Using the 4.6-liter Mustang V-8 as a base, it’s then treated to forgedaluminum pistons and connecting rods, an aluminum flywheel, and a forged eight-bolt crank. Bolt on the latest ROUSHcharger blower and you get a hefty 510 hp. Exterior cues include a cool Roush body kit and 18-inch wheels along with fighterinspired silver paint, a green stripe, and the yellow and red badging of the Eighth Air Force.

STAGE 3 BLACKJACK MUSTANG

You can bet that if the Batmobile is in the shop for an oil change, you’d find the Caped Crusader behind the wheel of a BlackJack Mustang. This is the meanest, baddest Mustang yet to roll out of the Livonia, Michigan, workshops of legendary pony-car tuner, Jack Roush. The $57,480 BlackJack starts life as a stock, all-black Mustang GT to which Roush adds black-painted 18-inch forged alloys, a black-painted seven-piece aero body kit, a black grille, and tops it off with a 21inch-wide matte black stripe down the middle. Menacing is not the word here. Under the hood, the 4.6-liter Ford V-8 gets a polished ROUSHcharger Roots-style blower, bumping the power up from 300 hp to a hefty 430 hp and max torque up to 400 lb-ft. Uprated suspension, bigger brakes, and Roush’s wheel hop reduction kit means the BlackJack handles as well as it performs.

CTR3 If you missed the boat on buying a new Porsche Carrera GT before production ended in 2006, don’t worry; there’s something out there that shares its DNA, but is a bit faster. The Ruf CTR3 is the 235-mph creation of legendary Porsche tuner Alois Ruf. While he’s best known for his crazy 911 conversions, the CTR3 takes him into true supercar territory. For starters, it’s built around a mid-engined, tube-frame chassis and clothed in a windcheating Kevlar and carbonfiber body. Sizewise, it’s an inch and a half shorter than a 911 Turbo and four inches longer than a Cayman. Power comes from a twin-turbo 3.8-liter flat-six that delivers a thundering 700 hp and 656 lb-ft of torque. That translates into zero-to-60-mph sprints in around 3.0 seconds, compared to 3.5 seconds for the Carrera GT. Yes, rear vision though the slotted rear window is grim, but no one is

going to be passing you at 235 mph. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .

People thinking it’s a Cayman

When it comes to the award for the most practical, the most daily-driver-friendly supercar money can buy, Ruf’s Porsche 911-based Rt 12 must be a leading contender. Here’s a car that—apart from its air-gulping nose and fighter-jet rear wing—looks like it came off the showroom floor. Cup holders? Yup, it’s got those. Yet powering this monster is a twin-turbo 3.8-liter dry-sump flat-six that delivers a mighty 650 hp. Click the stopwatch and you’ll see zero-to-60 sprinting in 3.2 seconds. And, given a stretch of autobahn long enough, it’ll run to 225 mph till the cows come home. Yet it’ll happily putter around town without a hint of complaint. Beneath that relatively plain-Jane exterior, the Rt 12 is packed with race-bred technology, like brake rotors the size of trashcan lids, alloy monobloc calipers, and Ruf-tuned suspension. And to avoid spoiler scrapes on speed bumps, Ruf

includes a hydraulic suspension lift that raises the car a couple of inches. That’s what you call user-friendly. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..

SALEEN

S5S RAPTOR Saleen earned its cred as a supercar maker with the blacktop-blistering S7 Twin Turbo. But at $585,000 a pop, only the Bill Gateses of the world were on its list of target buyers. So it makes sense for Saleen to move its crosshairs a little lower—say to the slightly more “affordable” $200-grand mark. Enter the stunning Saleen S5S Raptor, a 650-hp all-American supercar aimed squarely at the Lamborghini Gallardo/ Ferrari F430 end of the market. Unveiled at the 2008 New York auto show, the Raptor is, for now, a teasing concept designed to give Saleen a feel for the number of potential buyers out there. But if Saleen makes good on its promised performance—zero-to-60 mph in a

toe-curling 3.2 seconds and a flat-out velocity of 200-plus mph, the Raptor could be a monster hit. Especially at the projected $185,000 sticker. And if anyone can make good on those claims, it’s Saleen’s new chief technical officer, Chris Theodore. He’s the ex-Chrysler engineer who made the Viper the supercar it is. And while at Ford, he took the Ford GT from concept to supercar reality. Designed by Michigan-based ASC Creative Design Group, the Raptor combines the edgy look of Italian exotica, like the Gallardo, with the broad-shouldered stance of American Can-Am racers of the Sixties. We like it. The concept rides on a lightweight-

aluminum space-frame chassis that’s clad with a mix of aluminum and composite body panels. Weight is around 3,200 pounds. Powering the S5S is a Saleen-developed 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 that develops a meaty 650 hp and 630 lb-ft of torque. The beauty of the new V-8 is that it can run on E85 cellulosic ethanol—the plant-based brew that’s used in the American Le Mans Series and IRL. For now, there’s no official word on whether the concept will get the production green light. But, in limited numbers, it could be exactly what American supercar fans are looking for.

Normally, new car collection is a four-step process; go to dealer, pay money, get keys, drive away. But the folks at Saleen want the 25 buyers of its new $101-grand Sterling Edition S302E to feel a little more special when they help celebrate Saleen’s 25th anniversary. So, taking delivery includes firstclass plane tickets for two to Detroit, a limo from the airport, first-class hotel accommodation, and a hosted tour of the Saleen plant. In addition, you get a Saleen custom leather jacket, a custom car cover, and a photo album of your car’s build. As for the car, it’s based on Saleen’s fire-breathing S302 Extreme with a 620-hp supercharged V-8 under the hood, close-ratio six-speed manual shifter, Saleen Racecraft suspension, big 15-inch rotors with six-piston calipers, and 20-inch five-spoke forged alloys. The magic number is 256.18 mph. That’s the official speed Shelby Super Cars’ Ultimate Aero TT averaged on a closed 2.5-mile stretch of Highway 221 in Washington State last September. When we say “official” it doesn’t get more official than Guinness World Records, which declared this bullet-shaped supercar the “World’s Fastest Production Car.” SSC boss Jarrod Shelby has spent the past eight years developing the Aero and it’s down to his painstaking attention to detail that the car works so brilliantly. Power comes from a twin-turbo 6.3-liter Corvette CR5-based V-8, delivering a mind-blowing 1,183 hp and 1,094 lb-ft of torque. Couple that with a featherweight carbon-fiber body and you get zero-to-60-mph sprinting in a blistering 2.8 seconds and the kind of mid-range thrust only jet jockies tend to experience. Shelby plans to build just 50 cars over the next three years. 138

For a while there, Spyker’s future looked pretty bleak. But now, things are starting to appear a little more settled. And hopefully the Dutch supercar maker’s latest offering—the more versatile C8 Aileron—will keep the company humming. Based on the same lightweight aluminum space frame they’ve been using since the original C8 Spyder, the Aileron features a 4.5-inch stretch in wheelbase, along with a wider track and an impressive 40-percent increase in torsional rigidity; all without an increase in weight. More space between the wheels means a more spacious cockpit and even sharper handling. The same 4.2-liter Audi V-8 continues to summon 400 hp, though, for the first time, it’s offered with a sixspeed ZF automatic. Pricing has yet to be confirmed but Spyker is talking about $313,000 when it arrives towards the end of the year.

Fast not furious

Thankfully Spyker’s glass-domed C8 Laviolette has managed to live down its star billing alongside Sharon Stone in the truly rancid Basic Instinct 2 movie. But only just. These days it continues to be one of the rarest, and most dramatic sights on the highway. From its scissor-hinged doors to its voluptuous, curve-filled body, and roof-mounted air intake, the Laviolette screams “exotic supercar”. And inside it is nothing less than a feast for the eyes with its engined-turned dash, stunning exposed gearshift linkage, and chronograph-style instruments. The only thing that’s not too exotic is the 4.2-liter Audi V-8 midmounted behind the seats. With only 400 hp, zero-to-60-mph sprinting in 4.5 seconds is swift, but hardly neck-snapping these days. Its lightweight-aluminum body, precise steering, and 19-inch rubberware make it feel nimble and agile through the curves. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

BGreeesnt Exotic

Despite having more ups and downs than a roller coaster at Six Flags, Tesla Motors’ eco-chic Roadster is finally in production and out on the road, averaging the equivalent of 135 mpg. Four bucks a gallon, who cares? While the pint-sized Tesla isn’t going to save the planet, it will act as a poster child for showing that electric cars can be a whole bundle of fun to drive. Fun, that is, for the few who can pony up the necessary $109-grand asking price. But what the Tesla delivers is a thrill ride of a two seater that can sprint from standstill to 60 mph in less than four seconds and run for 220 miles between charges. Its secret is a big 248-hp electric motor, amped by 6,800 teeny lithium-ion laptop battery cells. Recharging is simply a matter of plugging it into a household socket. Lotus in the UK is building the chassis, which is shipped to San Francisco for final assembly. We call it electrifying. 140

DETROIT STREET RODS Paying Homage to the “Little Deuce Coupe,” which became infamous in the Beach Boys song, Detroit Street Rods’ Deuce Roadster is very similar to that quintessential street rod that has been a dream of hot rodders, drag racers, and car builders since the late 40s. It comes standard with the latest technology from Detroit in the form of a 450-hp and 410 lb-ft “Boss” engine from Roush Performance and a fourspeed automatic. A limited-production run of 100 commemorative vehicles has been licensed by Ford to celebrate the car’s 75th anniversary. Serial number 001, the first anniversary car, fetched $300,000 at the 2007 BarrettJackson auction, but buyers should expect to pay about half of that, or $175,000, for one. The anniversary “Deuce” can be purchased through select Ford dealers across the nation. (910) 458-3838, www. detroitstreetrods.com

To set itself apart, Capital Forged only uses best-of-the-best 6061-T6 grade aluminum for its wheels, which are forged rather than cast for exceptional strength, durability and reduced weight. And to make sure buyers get exactly the right wheels for their car, truck or SUV, with the right coloring and customizing, all Capital Forged rims are made to order. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

Roma

As you’d expect, the choices are virtually limitless. Chromed, powder-coated, polished, pin-striped; you name it. Take the metallic yellow Gallardo Spyder shown above. It features a set of Capital Forged’s three-piece, five-spoke Roma rims with black powder-coated outer lip, yellow inner rim and centers, yellow hardware and yellow pin-striping. And that pinstripe on the outer lip isn’t just painted on. The lip is actually machined with a pinstripe groove around the circumference of the wheel giving a new, eye-popping look. “It’s our goal to create a full portfolio of designs and sizes that continually set the standard for style and performance,” says Capital Forged president, Brian Garin. BENTLEY SILICON VALLEY

Finding three Bugatti Veyrons sitting side by side is as rare as it gets. Top Gear was able to gather three during a photo shoot in Dubai and there is even a picture of four of these cars in front of a lodge near the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance; but those, of course, all sit with happy owners. However, for the person looking for a pair of his-and-her Veyrons plus an additional one for the garage, Silicon Valley Auto Group is here to help. Nestled in its showroom down the beautiful East Main Street of Los Gatos, California, are three brightly colored and in mint condition Veyrons. If you want your Bugatti in another color besides blue-black metallic, red, or black, or Bugatti blue, the folks there can order you a new one in any combination you wish. COACH BUILDERS LIMITED

Taking a saw to the top of a Cadillac or Chrysler 300 is not just limited to vandals, fire rescue, or chop shops. The people over at Coach Builders Limited do it for the thrill, not to mention the money and their customer’s satisfaction. Specializing in Cadillac and the Chrysler convertibles—but fully capable of doing a variety of makes and models—Coach Builders Limited has torn the roof off many cars, and replaced them with fully open, hydraulically powered soft convertible tops, for more than 32 years. Not capable of doing a mediocre job, Coach Builders Limited only uses the finest padded tops, customizable to most colors, and doesn’t add roll bars that unnecessarily waste interior space. MOBSTEEL

Al Capone’s 1930 V-16 Cadillac or his 1928 Cadillac Town Sedan might be a dream for some gangsters, but in this day and age, no mobster would pass up the works of art created by Mobsteel. Mobsteel’s focal point used to be set on resurrecting early- to mid-1960s Lincolns from their graves but has grown to new models, like the Mobsteel Edition Ford Flex. Ripping out the old and replacing it with new parts from such aftermarket part makers as Pirelli, Magnaflow, Rockford Fosgate, and their own Mobsteel rims, the real magic is in the custom body work, stylish new interiors, and more cool gadgets than the Consumer Electronics Show. Mobsteel not only reconditions and overhauls these cars, but also brings them back to glory—gangster or not. (810) 333-6100, www.mobsteel.com
