Lamborghinis and Ferraris are rare, yet seem as common as Corvettes when compared to the Alfa Romeo 8c. It can be hard enough finding one to buy, you can nearly forget about catching one on the street or at your local cars and coffee meet. Don’t be too distraught, more main stream Alfas will be making their way over here, opening the door for that 8C Competizione and its topless-brother Spider to hopefully see a bump in production. The top-dog Alfa is formed of carbon fiber and utilizes a 4.7-liter Ferrari-derived V-8 that churns 444 hp. That power is connected to the rear wheels via a 6-speed paddleshifted automatic and good enough to scoot the car up to 60 mph from zero in 4.2 seconds. If you’re looking to make the Afla Romeo nameplate less rare in your neighbourhood, you’d better buy used, because all 500 8C Competizione coupes and 500 8C Spiders are spoken for.

The Ariel Atom 3’s outstanding handling characteristics, substantial power-to-weight ratio, and 2.0-liter Japanese-spec Honda engine makes it one of the more capable track cars for either the weekend track day driver or serious racer alike. The new Ariel Atom 3’s small size and powerful engine make it one of the best performing cars to ever lap a track. Even more shocking is its price when compared to the expensive exotics, at just a fraction of the price of the competition, its cost-to-performance ratio is even more impressive than its power-to-weight ratio. Light-weight construction, bespoke components, a race-ready power plant, 0–60 in 2.9 seconds, and nocompromise design makes the Ariel Atom 3 the front runner for any trackcar purchase.

High Rollers

At HRE Wheels High Performance is Achieved Not Only on the Road and Track But in the Manufacturing and Design Your car’s wheels have a lot riding on them. Too much to let high fashion override high standards in engineering and production. For over thirty years HRE Performance Wheels has been dedicated to producing world-class quality wheels that meet both the aesthetic and athletic requirements high performance driving enthusiasts have for their vehicles. “We don’t tolerate mediocrity,” declares Alan Peltier, HRE’s president. “Our goal is to be the best, not the biggest in the world.” Peltier, by the way, is an aerospace engineer who joined HRE in 1999 because “I needed to work with cars.” He is as comfortable running software that assesses a wheel design’s ability to handle road stress as he is at creating spreadsheets for sales forecasts. A huge plus considering how many of his customers’ high-end performance cars are technically four-wheeled ‘rocket ships.’ In order to live up to HRE’s commitment to be the best, the company chooses not to outsource any process but to do everything, from engineering to manufacturing, in-house at its modern 60,000 square foot facility near San Diego. “We can control everything, especially quality, so we can execute on the promise that comes with all our wheels…HRE

customers know how fanatical we are and expect the finest wheel money can buy,” explains Peltier. HRE’s passion for manufacturing quality (and the safety factor that accompanies it) means everything it produces meets Germany’s TUV specifications, acknowledged as the strictest automotive safety requirements in the world. Every two years, safety inspectors from Germany visit the HRE facility to review and certify its engineering and production. HRE is one of few aftermarket wheel manufacturers worldwide to meet TÜV Verified Quality standards. Rather than ‘batch cut,’ HRE wheels are cut individually to a customer’s specific order. The raw forging materials used (40 percent stronger than casting) cost more than many aftermarket wheels and much of it is cut away during the 12-15 machining operations the average HRE

wheel undergoes. Then each wheel receives 2-3 hours of hand polishing. Powder coating and other finishes are applied in-house. Each wheel is tested to ensure it is balanced and exhibits no vibration. The latest example of HRE’s ability to blend function with fashion are three new 21” forged one-piece Monoblok™ Series wheel fitments for the high performance Porsche Panamera Turbo sedan. Monoblok™ Series wheels for luxury sedans are engineered specifically for the higher load ratings and performance levels of the Panamera, Mercedes S65, with even higher load rated versions available for performance SUVs such as the Cayenne Turbo S and BMW X6M. CNC machined of 6061-T6 aluminum to each vehicle’s factory specifications, these 100% forged wheels are fully compatible regarding TPMS, lugs and center caps. No spacers or hub rings are required.

This year we have some really exciting new exotic and luxury cars featured in the duPont REGISTRY™ Exotic Car Buyer’s Guide 2010. It’s clearly a year of firsts, with many notable examples of first time ever produced automobiles such as: • The Aston Martin One-77, a limited edition first for Aston Martin. This ultra-exotic is the second most expensive automobile made, behind the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport. • The Porsche Panamera, Porsche’s first venture into the performance sedan market. • The Maserati Gran Cabrio, the Pininfarina designed, first time ever, four-seat convertible by Maserati. • The Mercedes-Benz S400, the world’s first production lithium ion hybrid. • The Bentley Continental Supersports, Bentley’s fastest and most powerful supercar. This muscular two-seater combines performance, design and craftsmanship with “FlexFuel” technology. • The Lamborghini Reventón Roadster, a limited edition, open-top version of the incredibly successful “Extreme” Reventón which utilizes one of the most powerful naturally-aspirated engines in production. • The Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni, another limited edition Lamborghini, however it’s a twowheel drive car that pays a special tribute to Lamborghini’s test driver for the past four decades.

Aston Martin

The Aston Martin DB9 went through a mild refreshening in 2009 and we don’t expect much to change as the car moves into 2010. You still get an interior smothered in leather and real wood and almost absent of any sort of plastic materials. The power increase and ride adjustments to the 2009 car will still make themselves well known in 2010, with the 6.0-liter V-12 now making 470 hp and connected to a 6-speed paddle-shifted automatic transmission that shifts 25 percent faster than it did before. The suspension does offer its guest the elegant ride they deserve, but it’s not as toss-able as some other Aston Martins. We will give you that the Aston Martin DB9 is gorgeous, like the rest of the Aston Martin line, but we would still like to see a little more creativity out of its styling department.

Aston Martin DBS Volante

The DBS coupe began production in 2007 but was designed from the start to once be a convertible. So it’s no wonder that all Aston Martin had to do was simply cut off the existing roof and replace it with a ragtop and, voilà, the DBS Volante was born. Aston Martin engineers went with a ragtop to save the car’s profile whether up or down; however, buyers may wish for a folding hardtop, due to its diversity. Power remains the same as the coupes; derived from the 6.0-liter V-12 engine making 510 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. Pulling all the speed potential to a halt are standard carbon-ceramic brakes, which are lighter and more resistant to fade than standard brakes, though they do have a tendency to squeak. Other small Volante touches include the sculpted tonneau cover and a Bang & Olufsen radio that automatically adjusts for wind noise when the roof is open.

Aston Martin V-8 Vantage The V-8 Vantage sits in some rough territory. You have some of the most prolific and exciting automobiles of our time in its price bracket. The 480-hp Porsche 911 Turbo, 420-hp Audi R8, 638-hp Corvette ZR-1, and 518-hp SL63 AMG all play ball in this arena. To help Aston Martin’s entry level car make it in this field, it upped the car’s ante last year with an increase in power from 370 hp to 420, which is just adequate enough to be considered a player but not good enough to put it on the all-star team. To give the Vantage its due credit, its suspension is set up to make all the right moves on a curvy road, better than some Astons costing twice as much. The Vantage might be able to really prevail if Aston would bring over the limited-edition V-12 iteration from across the ocean; unfortunately, looks like Aston won’t allow it to put up the good fight. 22

ASTON MARTIN

One-77 The name says it all: a handcrafted sports car tailored to each customer’s individual specifications with a total production limited to 77 vehicles worldwide. Aston Martin likens it to a made-to-order suit handcrafted by a Savile Row tailor. That analogy works as far as the lightweight aluminum exterior body panels hand formed by skilled British craftsmen using centuries old metal-shaping techniques and the seats fitted to the customer’s individual measurements are concerned. But things are not quite as low-tech when you lift up the hand-rolled aluminum onepiece front end to expose a racecar-derived carbon-fiber tub that serves as the chassis and the 7.3-liter 700-hp V-12 engine. It all carries out Aston Martin’s intention to combine eye-grabbing styling, old world craftsmanship, and advanced technology as an extreme example of its current production vehicles. The 7.3-liter V-12 is based on the 6.0-liter unit that powers the DBS and DB9 and is the handiwork of Cosworth, the legendary British racing engine builder with a long history of wins from the Indy 500 to Formula One. Like the production Astons, it is mounted behind the front axle in a front-mid-engine location for an optimum handling balance. The 6-speed robotized manual transmission is also derived from the production cars as are the massive carbon-ceramic brakes. The adjustable racing suspension pieces, like many other parts, are as artfully attractive as they are functional. True to the car’s tailored nature, the suspension settings can be tuned from comfortable grand touring specs to full-on Nürburgring racer according to customer preference. We love the idea of an extremely over-the-top Aston Martin, but with production limited to 77 cars and a price tag of nearly 2-million dollars, it’s obviously not for everyone. LIST PRICE

ABT R8 5.2 FSI

Figures like these make the hearts of sports car drivers beat faster: 600 hp, zero-to-60 mph in 3.8 seconds, and a top speed of 200 mph. The ABT R8 5.2 FSI draws plenty of power from its large-capacity V-10 engine—75 more horsepower than the stock engine. However, the super sports car is not just a winner on the track due to its acceleration characteristics alone, but also the perfectly coordinated bodywork package. It has been designed according to the latest motorsport knowledge, including the use of high-end carbon materials. The focus was above all on the optimum distribution of weight and a systematic light-weight construction. The front spoiler, side sills, and rear apron outline the bodywork and give it a more powerful presence even when at a standstill. They form one unit with the distinctive rear wing and the typical ABT 4-pipe exhaust system. The super sports car is presented on BR-type 20-inch wheels, which suit the classic design. 866-792-3191, www.ggitunung.com

Switzer P800 Nissan GT-R

After a few days at Switzer's garage in Oberlin, Ohio, a Nissan GT-R becomes a Switzer P800. With an engine that delivers more than 800 hp (well over 700 hp at the wheels), Switzer's touch delivers on the GTR's Godzilla nickname, rocketing the car down the quarter mile in 10.5 seconds at nearly 135 mph and continuing on to speeds in excess of 205 mph—all without compromising the daily-driver nature of Nissan's digital supercar. With Switzer's new cooling upgrades in place to keep temperatures down, the GTR becomes the ultimate track-day weapon. www.switzerperformanceinnovation.com 32

Hamann V-8 Vantage “Form follows function,” In this spirit, Hamann perfectly co-ordinates the individual components of the aerodynamics kit with each other. The bow of the Aston Martin can be optionally equipped with a spoiler lip for the original front or enhanced with an entire front skirt. A shapely spoiler which can be fitted on the rear lid—enhanced with a matching three-part rear diffuser— helps high-speed stability. New light alloy rims with tires measuring 245/30ZR-21 in the front and 295/25ZR-21 at the back are accentuated with special chassis springs which lower the V8 Vantage by nearly 2 inches at the front axle and nearly 1 inch at the rear. At the same time, this enhances the handling of this sports car. The Swabian engineers developed a sport exhaust made of stainless steel that renders both an impressive sound and breathes an additional 20 hp into the noble car. 888-9-HAMANN, www.hamannamerica.com

RSC

Vantage C

Unlike Porsche or Ferrari, Aston Martin is not a marquee traditionally associated with performance tuning, but Miami-based manufacturer Racing Sport Concepts (RSC) has changed all that with its complete upgrade package: The RSC Vantage C. In addition to the carbon fiber and other visual enhancements, the Vantage C boasts close to 450 hp, achieved through RSC’s impressive ECU program and a lightweight exhaust system handcrafted in England. The Vantage C is lowered 1.25 inches and runs on 20-inch wheels—the extra rubber needed to cope with the substantial increase in power—and also includes a custom gearbox map for sportshift cars which reduces shift times without sacrificing smoothness. All parts of the package are available individually right through to complete turn-key builds including vehicle sourcing and purchase. 800-815-3751, www.rsctuning.com

The Vantage Collection One could argue that with a vehicle as good looking as an Aston Martin, there is little need to gild the lily. However, Nicholas David, sees things differently. He has developed a range of aftermarket parts and accessories that present a unique offering to the Aston Martin owner. The Vantage Collection enables the customization and enhancement of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, DB9, and DBS, with further models to follow. Designed and built to the highest quality, the carbon fiber body parts offer a weight saving functionality, whilst retaining a level of finesse in keeping with the style of the vehicle. A custom designed range of luxury lifestyle accessories contribute to an ever-expanding range of tempting goodies for the Aston Martin enthusiast. 310-990-5125, thevantagecollection.com

Audi R8 / 5.2 FSI If it’s good enough for Tony Stark, then it’s good enough for the rest of the world, but not until 2011. In the meantime, we can all take a long gander at the upcoming R8 convertible (photo not available at press time), on the big screen, in the sequel to Iron Man. No word on what will be powering the newest hair dryer, but we hope Audi passes up on the just-adequate 420-hp 4.2-liter V-8 for the more addicting Lamborghini-based 5.2-liter V-10 engine making 525 hp. The 5.2 FSI coupe was introduced in 2009 to combat what seemed to be the one chic in the car’s armor, its power. Unfortunately, it created a new problem: a price increase of nearly 30 percent compared to the V-8-powered R8. If you can get past the $150,000 price tag, what you have is a sports car that can hold its own against the best of its similarly-priced competitors and some cars costing much more, including the 911 Turbo, the LP560-4, and the SL65 Black Series. The 5.2 FSI acquired the aluminium structure and body from the R8 and paired it to the aluminium engine found in the Gallardo. Dry-sump oiling allows the engine to sit lower in the automobile, for a better center of gravity. Transmission choices will remain the same as that of the R8, either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed R-tronic automated manual. All-wheel drive with a rear bias comes stock. The adjustable magnetorheological shocks, also found in the ZR1, are still an option. To spot the V-10-engined car, look for the LED lights in the front, back, and sides, the wider side blades, exclusive 19-inch rims, two oval exhaust outlets instead of four, and front air intakes with three slats instead of two and now painted in high-gloss black. Audi

Audi

S5 Cabriolet

TT-RS

The S5 Cabriolet steps into 2010 with a new engine—to be shared with the S4—that will also be replacing the S5 Coupe’s V-8 in the following year. The 333-hp 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 will be connected to Audi’s 7-speed dualclutch transmission, providing nearly the same power as the outgoing 354-hp 4.2-liter V-8 but using quite a bit less fuel. Audi’s marketing department took a big step when deciding whether to use the tried-and-true soft-top convertible over the new and advanced hardtop variety. The new BMW M3 uses it, so does the Infiniti G37, and the all-newfor-2010 Lexus IS-C as well. Okay, the BMW costs $10 grand more but comes with about 60 more horsepower. The Lexus costs $7,000 less but makes 50 fewer ponies and there is the G37, which costs 8,000 dollar bills less than the S5 with only 29 less ponies. So who wins the contest of the sporty luxury convertibles? That is for the market to decide.

The TT has never been a car to get the blood pumping, unless you were one of the few to experience how unpredictable the first-generation TT’s handling could be at high speeds. Audi is looking to change all that with the introduction of the TT-RS coupe and roadster. Power will come from a fuel efficient yet powerful 2.5-liter turbocharged I-5 producing 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. Passing 60 mph from a stop requires a brief 4.6 seconds and the top speed is limited to 155 mph— though without the governor it’s capable of 174 mph. Pricing and even availability have not yet been announced for this side of the pond, but expect the TT-RS to make its way to the U.S. for around $60,000, putting it in the aim of some very hi-po Porsche models. Will the market defend such a move?

Hamann Imperator

Hartge BMW M6

The new program for the Bentley Continental GT and Continental GT Speed once again confirms that Hamann is one of the first choices when it comes to sportive accessories. Larger air inlets integrated with daytime running lights give the Bentley a more dynamic face and reduce lift at the front axle. In order to reduce the lift at the rear, it fitted an elegant spoiler on the original boot lid and combined it with a rear diffuser. Multi-part forged 22-inch rims help fill the wells. Performance enhancements include a sports muffler and an ECU upgrade. The result for the Continental GT Speed engine is an extra 40 hp. 888-9-HAMANN, www.hamannamerica.com

HARTGE can make a dream come true for many BMW M6 fans: to raise the maximum speed of the car from its electronically-limited 155 mph to a maximum of 199 mph. To ensure the enormous power connects to the road, attention must to be paid to the standard wheels. HARTGE has the solution: a set of HARTGE wheels combined with fat rubber. Rounding off this modification perfectly is a set of springs that lowers the M6 by 1.2 inches. HARTGE also offers an ergonomically-designed 3spoke leather steering wheel, carbon interior embellishments, two-piece aluminum pedal set and handbrake grip, and a set of foot mats. 866-792-3191, www.ggituning.com

Arnage Final Series

Azure

As a good bye to a car that has been the pinnacle of luxury for the last ten years, Bentley is introducing the Bentley Arnage Final Series. The Final Series will not depart to far from what we have come to know from the brand or even a basic Arnage; however, it will combine the luxurious appointments normally found in the Arnage R with the engine normally found in the sporty Arnage T, the 500-hp 6.75-liter V-8. You can spot the Final Series via its Brookland-based 20inch rims, a retractable Flying-B hood ornament, the trendy side air vents, a billet-aluminum fuel cap, a blacked-out grille, special “Final Series” badges, and twin tailpipes. Only 150 Final Series cars have gone into production. For most of the Bentley faithful, it is time to look ahead to what the

The Azure, a car based off the Arnage, won’t be here too much longer. Once the Arnage Final Series bows out, the Azure convertible may keep on for a couple more years until it will be replaced by a convertible version of the Mulsanne sedan The Azure is more than just a hand-built machine covered in custom leather and paint and motivated by a large and powerful 6.75liter V-8. It is the very definition of luxury. It is considered Bentley’s flagship model. The latest edition to the Azure family is the edition of the sporty T. The Azure T creates 50 more horsepower and 93 more lb-ft of torque for a total of 500 hp and 732 lb-ft. You can spot the Azure T by its standard 20-inch five-spoke wheels, retractable hood ornament, dark-tinted front grilles, lower front air vents, and aluminium fuel cap.

(718) 545-0500 Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed The Continental GT Speed sold so well—accounting for 60 percent of Bentley’s GT sales instead of the anticipated 20 percent—that Bentley had to make Speed versions of the other two cars in the Continental line, the Flying Spur and GTC. In 2009, Bentley introduced its four-door Speed along with a small bundle of subtle refinements for the Flying Spur. The Flying Spur Speed weighs a couple hundred pounds more than the two-door coupe, but still a tad less than the convertible Continental, and is capable of running to 60 mph from a dead stop in 4.5 seconds and on to a top speed nudging 200 mph. That’s 0.4 seconds faster to 60 mph and with a six mph higher top speed than the 552-hp base car. The changes to the Flying Spur model for 2009 were the same changes for the Continental in 2008, which includes a more upright grille, a new rear bumper, the adoption of an Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system, and new color choices for both the exterior and interior. BENTLEY Continental GTC Speed

The last model is the Continental line to receive the Speed treatment is the GTC. Like the two-door coupe and four-door Flying Spur, the GTC obtains a more powerful version of the 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged W-12 engine now making 600 hp and 553 lbs.-ft. of torque. The car will do 0–60 mph in a brief 4.5 seconds and top out at 200 mph. If you decide to lower the top—a 25-second process—you can motor up to a still-quitefast 195 mph. To provide the driver with more grip, better responses, and improved feedback, the suspension has been lowered by 0.4 inches in the front and 0.6 inches in the rear, the ESP has been tuned to allow more tire slippage, the damper’s settings have been revised, the steering has been reworked, and the car now wears 20-inch rims and tires. Besides the normal Speed kick plate, you can spot the faster model via its new larger multi-spoke alloy rims and Pirelli PZero ultra-high performance tires, its lower ride height, and a new trunk-mounted lip spoiler that enhances highspeed aerodynamics. No need to worry about hearing the sound system with the top down due to the available 1,100-watt Naim audio system—the most powerful audio system of any production car. Another new option is the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system, which can www.duPontREGISTRY.com

BENTLEY Continental Supersports It’s hard to believe that a couple years ago Bentley was promoting the Bentley Continental GT Speed as the fastest Bentley, ever! Already out done by 2010, the Continental GT Speed’s title was quickly demolished by the newest Continental variation, the Supersports. The Continental GT Speed continues into 2010 with the same 600-hp 6.0-liter W-12 engine that enables it to have a zero-to-60 time of 4.3 seconds. You can spot the new Speed, along with any Continental manufactured after 2008, by its redesigned front air intake, more upright grille, and set of thin-spoke 20-inch rims. Compared to the GT Speed, the Supersports is more powerful, lighter, and faster. To top that list off, the Supersports can run on biofuel. Horsepower is up 13 percent and torque is up 23 percent over the base GT. Propulsion from a stop to 60 mph takes a scant 3.7 seconds and the top speed breaks the sacred 200mph barrier. Weight is down as well, to a still un-slim 4,900 pounds. The car uses brakes—shared with the GT Speed—that win you instant bragging rights, 16-inch rotors in the front—the largest of any production car in the world. If you’re happy to hear how you can run your Continental on environmentally-friendly biofuel, but still worry about how long it will rot in a scrap yard, you will also be pleased to know that the Supersport is 95-percent recyclable. However, even the head engineer over at Bentley is quick to point out that most of its cars end up in museums, not landfills. Cutting back money spent at the pump with the Supersports is something to look forward to, but expect a price that will surely make you re-think your fuel-cost savings. LIST PRICE

So what we have carrying over into the new model year is the same 414-hp 3,700-pound beast that is the heart of BMW’s M division. Offered in three different forms (coupe, convertible, and sedan) with a couple different transmissions, the BMW M3 is the pinnacle sports sedan we can all dream of owning. With every passing generation, the BMW M3 has been able to keeps its title as the most practical, drivable, and fun cars to own, but unfortunately it is also becoming less attainable. BMW M6 With a much deeper burble, despite being powered by the same 5.0-liter V-10, the BMW M6 just feels more enthusiastic than the M5. It may have something to do with the coupe’s carbon-fiber roof, which keeps weight down to less than that of the M5 by about 100 pounds, or that seven-speed sequential-manual gearbox, which can pop off shifts in the blink of an eye. Even though it weighs less than the M5, we cannot call the M6 a light weight. The coupe is overweight and the convertible, at nearly 4,400 pounds, is not far from the Hummer H3’s 4,700 pounds of mass. Despite the car’s weight problem, the aluminium suspension does a phenomenal job of making it feel much smaller. It may not be as sharp as a razor, but it can still cut a line. LIST PRICE

Grandsport Hermes Centenaire Editions Hermes Bleu Centenaire

Hermes Sang Bleu Pur Sang

Centenaire Edition Sang Noir

You would think that with a price that begins at $1-million dollars, every car would be a special edition. Unfortunately, a Veyron just isn’t extraordinary unless it comes in some sort of crazy color combination, without a roof, or both. The first limited-edition Veyron was the Pur Sang, meaning “pure blood,” which reveled in its un-painted aluminum alloy and carbon-fiber skin; each of the five Pur Sangs stickered for approximately $2.1 million. Then there was the FBG Par Hermès, which was equi-valent to a $1-million option from a high-end designer. Next, the Sang Noir, meaning “black blood,” was limited to 15 $1.5-million units and was composed of unpainted carbon-fiber panels, powdercoated wheels, and black-painted aluminum body panels. To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Bugatti introduced the $1.7-million one-off Bleu Centenaire, followed shortly by four one-of-a-kind Centenaire editions (each of which were named after a pre-WWII Bugatti race car driver and painted in distinctive coloring) that stickered for an estimated $2.3 million each. The Grand Sport is a targa version of the car that is still in production and has a limited top speed—in absence of its roof—of 217 mph. The targa-topped Veyron comes with an umbrella that acts as a cover if the rain suddenly hits— a nice little bonus for a $2.1-million car. The last special-edition model was the recently-introduced Sang Bleu, a Grand Sport with exposed aluminum alloy and blue-painted carbon fiber. None of these cars have increased the power of the 1001-hp quad-turbocharged W-16 engine, but with a zeroto-60 time of 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 253 mph, who’s complaining?

Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

Despite GM’s woes, the ZR1 is continuing into 2010 with a few small changes and a slight bump in price. The most notable addition is the Performance Traction Management (PTM) system. PTM acts as launch control device, allowing the driver to floor the accelerator of the 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 while it holds the engine at a predetermined rpm. Once the clutch is dropped, the PTM system modulates torque 100 times per second for the consistent execution of dragstrip-like launches; hitting 60 mph from idle will require a scant 3.4 seconds. Keep the throttle nailed and the ZR1 will run all the way past 200 miles per hour. The PTM will also work in conjunction with the ZR1's traction control, active handling, and selective ride control systems to “manage acceleration” when exiting corners, though we do have concerns that it may be too intrusive. Making sure the ZR1 is as competent in the corners as well as the straights is its standard Magnetic Selective Ride Control suspension, which was first tested on the Corvette in the 50thanniversary model in 2003. The dampers consist of a Magneto-

Rheological fluid. Adjusting the amount of current fed to an electromagnetic coil causes that fluid to change its viscosity. With the ability to instantaneously—up to approximately 1000 times per second—adjust the dampers, the ZR1 is capable of delivering both a supple ride and more than 1g of lateral acceleration.

A new exterior color, called Torch red, a new cashmere interior as well as availability of the new Competition Gray wheels complete the additions for 2010.

Chevrolet Camaro SS

New for 2010 yet undeniably familiar, the Camaro has been in our sights—making its big screen debut in Transformers on July 3rd, 2007— yet strangely out of reach for some time; that was until partly through 2009 when it started hitting showrooms as a 2010 model. Power comes from the same 6.2-liter V-8 found in the Corvette but producing a slightly-less-devilish 426 hp and 420 lbs.-ft. of torque when coupled to the six-speed manual transmission. If tied to the 6speed automatic, power is down to 400 hp and 395 lb-ft of torque, but fuel savings will be up due to GM’s Active Fuel Management feature, which will allow the Camaro to putter along on four cylinders during light-load situations. Like the grand arrival you wish you had at your high school reunion, the Camaro might be a tad late to the pony-car party the Mustang, Challenger, and Charger have been celebrating, but comes in with more muscle and wearing better threads. Hennessey HPE700 After Chevrolet announced that it would be selling its ZR1 engine as a crate motor, we knew it would find its way into all sorts of automobiles. The ZR1-powered Camaro by Hennessey is one such product. More than just an engine swap, the HPE700 starts with a Camaro SS and adds the LS9 engine, new 20-inch rims, 14-inch front and rear rotors, a coil-over suspension, new sway bars, and the usual badges and graphics. A body kit that includes a front splitter, rear diffuser, rocker panels, and a lip spoiler help keep the car glued to the ground at speed. The upgrades chop off a second of the car’s normal zero-to-60 time and allow it to motor up to speeds that exceed 200 mph. 979-885-1300, www.hennesseyperformance.com

Squires Turbo Systems ZR7 Corvette The STS ZR7 stands out like prime rib in a world of dollar-menu meals. Its aggressive styling and its one-of-akind sculpted body panels are designed to make heads turn. Push the starter button and your ears will be the first one of your senses to tell you that this is no normal power plant. Under the hood is a patented remote twin-turbo configuration helping to create more than 700 horsepower from its V-8 engine. Combined with its suspension and brake upgrades, the monster motor takes this vehicle to a level of performance that can rival that of the ZR1. If you are looking for the performance vehicle that not only sets the bar and exceeds all expectations, look no further than the STS Twin-Turbo ZR7 Corvette. 801-224-3477, www.ststurbo.com

Hennessey ZR700 The Corvette ZR1 is already remarkably fast, so it takes a special type of person to demand better performance. Hennessey is betting there is more than 24 of those types of people in the world, which means its 705-hp ZR700 ZR1 upgrade will be in high demand because it plans to only build that many. Starting with a base ZR1, Hennessey upgraded the supercharger, which now creates 15 psi of boost, the intercooler, and the induction and exhaust systems. It also lowered the suspension, added some larger wheels, bolted on some aerodynamic pieces, slapped on some interior and exterior badges, and is promising a three-year or 36,000mile warranty. Since a zero-to-60 time of 2.9 seconds could also make it easier for it to end up in the scrapyard, a complimentary one-day driving course is included. 979-885-1300, www.hennesseyperformance.com 58

Devon GTX The limited-edition supercar is the first product from Los Angeles-based industrial design house Devon Motorworks and is set to go on sale in the first quarter of 2010. The Devon GTX utilizes an 8.4-liter V-10, from the Dodge Viper, making 650 hp and connected to a six-speed manual. Devon boasts that it takes the title as the most powerful naturally-aspirated production powertrain on the market today. The vehicle’s aircraft-quality carbon-fiber body reflects the muscle that can be found within. Carbon fiber-reinforced racing seats, dual-grained leather surfacing throughout the cockpit, and tasteful chrome appointments let you know that this powerful ride is not cheap either. Devon Motorworks will produce 36 cars per year. Each car will be sold and serviced through the manufacturer with a price tag pushing $500,000. info@devonmotorworks.com, www.devonmotorworks.com

Dodge Challenger SRT8 The behemoth muscle car from the 60s is back and full of vigor as it takes on its archrivals, the Mustang and Camaro once again. Some say resurrecting a classic is asking for failure, like remaking the original Star Trek into a motion picture...well, we can see how that went. So despite all the claims that you can’t make a classic good again, the Challenger seems to have it all. Under the SRT8’s bonnet is the same 6.1-liter Hemi V-8 that Dodge has been stuffing into all its hi-po cars since 2005. Combined with the generous-for-a-muscle-car seating and a trunk that you can go to CostMart with, the Challenger seems to offer its owners no compromises. Of course, the Challenger is long and wide and heavy and it feels long, wide, and heavy; let’s just hope you never have to snake between two bulldozers.

Dodge Viper SRT10 Coupe / Roadster The Viper brand has been on deathwatch for most of 2009 and unless the rumors about it getting a Ferrari-derived V-10 in the future are true, it may never make it to its next facelift. Despite being so close to the chopping block, Fiat has re-opened the Viper plants and it will be slithering on into 2010 with the same over-thetop muscle and ostentatious styling that has made the car so popular since it was first shown as a concept in 1989. Power comes from an 8.4-liter V-10 churning out an incredible 600 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque. The engine, working in conjunction with a 6-speed manual transmission and looking for traction out of the enormous 345/30ZR-19s tires out back, is capable of propelling this car up to 60 mph from a standstill in under four seconds and on to a top speed that pushes 200 mph. To put a halt to the car’s amazing speed capabilities, the Viper utilizes 14-inch rotors with Brembo calipers at all four corners. 60

The new entry-level Ferrari California is anything but when it comes to driving excitement and technical innovation. Sure, it is the least expensive and has the lowest horsepower of any of the current Ferrari models, but keep in mind, by Maranello standards, that equates to a starting price of $192,000 and 453 hp. Don’t let the handsomely-sculpted, nuevo-retro long-hood short-deck styling, plus 2 seating, and folding hardtop lull you into thinking the California is merely a boulevard cruiser. It certainly can be with the

steering-wheel-mounted Manettino switch in comfort mode and the transmission in drive, but why resist the seductive grumble of the eager V8? Give in, twist the Manettino dial to sport mode, grab the shift paddles, enjoy the well-tuned steering and suspension, and experience all the California has to offer. The impressive cowl-shake-free chassis is all aluminum and Ferrari’s first application of modular construction—requiring an allnew assembly line at Maranello plant. The top is a joy to watch as it folds and unfolds in its space above the trunk, leaving decent

luggage, not merely briefcase-sized, space when the top is down. The California is the first Ferrari GT model with a front-mounted V-8 engine. Because it sits behind the front axle, Ferrari properly calls it a mid-front-engine car, which puts the weight distribution at 47 percent in the front and 53 percent at the rear; an ideal balance for handling and traction. The 4.3-liter all-aluminum V-8 sports variable valve timing for both the intake and exhaust as well as being the first Ferrari engine with direct fuel injection; the latter

mainly contributing to fuel efficiency. While 75 percent of its 358 lb-ft of torque is available at 2,250 rpm for sprightly motoring about the neighborhood, all 453 horses don’t come on line until a soul-and-sound satisfying 7,750 rpm. Acceleration is astoundingly quick. Ferrari people smirk while quoting “less than 4 seconds”, knowing some testers have hit 60 mph from a standing start in 3.5 seconds. Credit some of that quickness to the F1-TRAC traction control system adopted from the 599 GTB and with its launch control

reprogrammed to trade smoky burnouts for instantaneous tire hookup. Most of the credit for the California’s rocket-style acceleration, however, goes to another first for a Ferrari—a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox—essentially a pair of transmissions that alternate gearshifts—that pre-selects gears to literally eliminate gaps in acceleration. A short raspy snort from the stacked exhaust is your only clue to the seamless gear changes as you flip the upshift paddle under acceleration. Massive carbon disc brakes are standard

and exhibit none of the squeal or grabbiness usually expected. The interior is crafted like fine Italian driving moccasin, but sized to American relaxed fit standards. A new “infotainment” system centers on a 6.5-inch touch-screen display. The California is a true grand tourer, combining comfort and luxury with amazing performance—a hard combination to beat at any price level.

Ferrari is getting ready to say good bye to the F430 as it prepares for its new replacement, the 458 Italia. The F430 has had a good run since it first made a splash in 2004 as a replacement for the F360, offering incredible power with amazing amounts of grip, all wrapped in a skin that’s sexier than the ones on America’s Next Top Model. The F430 could possibly be one of the best all-around sports cars on the market today. The F430 comes in four distinct flavors. The regular coupe, with its 490-hp V-8, shares its engine with the F430 Spider. If you’re more likely to hit the track on the weekends, then you want the F430 Scuderia, a lighter, more powerful version of the already outstanding coupe. For the 66

2010 Exotic Car Buyers Guide

few that want a good track car but also believe no Ferrari is complete without its top coming off, you will be vying for one of the 499 F430 Scuderia 16M Spiders that Ferrari is planning to build. The 16M Spider uses the same 510-hp version of the 4.3-liter V-8 also found in the Scuderia coupe. The biggest difference between the Scuderia Spider and Scudria coupe, beyond the absence of a roof, is the engine music, which was altered in the intake to eliminate some unwanted frequencies. Since it uses the same weight-saving measures as the Scuderia, it tips the scales at a low 3,168 pounds, besting even the base F430 coupe. It’s no wonder it is the fastest convertible Ferrari has ever produced.

Ferrari is so confident of its successor, the 458, that it patriotically attached the name of the mother country, Italia, to the nameplate. The sublime F430 is a pretty tough act to follow, but Ferrari is so confident of its successor, the 458, that it patriotically attached the name of the mother country, Italia, to the nameplate. So according to that model name, what we have is a 4.5-liter V-8-powered example of the quintessential Italian driving experience. Of course, the fact that a German, Michael Schumacher, played a key role in its development and, ultimately, how it drives, only enhances its credibility since he is also a seven-time world driving champion and a primary reason for the Italian automaker’s recent Formula One success. The name of another Italian automotive icon pops up as you view the stunning aerodynamically-sculpted lines and compact shape of the Pininfarina-penned 458 Italia: Enzo. Obviously as in the company founder, but in this case the similarities to the supercar named in his memory. Ultimately, it is aerodynamics that influenced the styling the most, to the extent that the nose sports flexible winglets that not only generate road-holding downforce but also deform as speed increases to reduce the size of the radiator air intakes for less high-speed drag.

68

2010 Exotic Car Buyers Guide

The 4.5-liter V-8 features direct fuel injection for decreasing fuel consumption and emissions while improving performance. The highrevving 9,000-rpm power plant puts out a whopping 562 hp with 80 percent of its 398 lb-ft of torque available as low as 3,250 rpm. Coupled to the 7speed dual-clutch transmission that debuted in the California, this will move the rear-drive lightweight (3,042 pound) aluminum-structured coupe from zero to 62 mph in less than 3.4 seconds. Top speed is 202 mph. Of course the traditional flat-plane racing crankshaft and triple exhaust parlay with the 9,000-rpm redline to produce a mechanical aria that is as patriotic sounding to Italian car lovers as the car’s name. Schumacher’s F1 influence is seen in a new race-derived steering wheel and dashboard. His influence is felt in more direct steering when you turn that racing wheel and handling taken to higher levels of grip and stability by computer coordinated control of the E-Diff and F1-Trac as well as ABS braking. The brakes also feature a prefill function that moves the pads closer to the discs when you lift off the throttle for quicker brake response.

FERRARI

599 GTB Fiorano HGTE

The Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano gets its name from a couple of different places. The 599 is from the 5999 cubic centimeters of V-12 engine that powers the car. GTB stands for “Gran Turismo Berlinetta” or “grand touring hardtop.” Fiorano is the name of the Ferrari test track over in Modenese, Italy. The 599 GTB Fiorano is the Gemini in the Ferrari family, part of it is a grand touring machine, designed to whisk its occupants away, rather quickly, to a destination far away. The other is of a fast-shifting hard-edged sports car that is designed to whisk its occupants around a track, rather quickly. For those that want more of the latter, Ferrari is adding a few more letters to its already long name. The HGTE, or Handling GT Evoluzione, package includes stiffer

springs and rear anti-roll bar, a lowered ride height, and a recalibrated setting for the car’s Magnetorheological suspension. The gearbox benefits from new software, enabling it to bang out shifts in 85 milliseconds and drop multiple gears under hard braking by holding down the left shift paddle. The package is designed to build upon the car’s already stellar handling characteristics and push the 599 further into the sports car segment and farther away from its 612 and California siblings. It will cost approximately $30,000 and can be retrofitted to any existing 599.

FERRARI 612 Scaglietti

Don’t let its elongated looks and the fact that it has room for four fool you. The Ferrari 612 Scaglietti is about a precise as a brain surgeon’s scalpel and about as powerful as Bruce Banner after he gets mad. How did Ferrari obtain such stellar performance in a car designed to carry a family of four? They started with an aluminium space frame construction and, by increasing the wheelbase, Ferrari was able

to move the front axle out to in front of the engine, giving it a front mid-engine layout and a more balanced front-to-rear weight ratio. Though it did not get the same 6.0-liter V-12 out of the Enzo like the 599 GTB, it still uses a V-12 at 5.7 liters in size and making 532 hp. At over 193 inches long, about the size of a medium-sized SUV, the 612 has been criticized for its styling, which some feel looks elongated and unproportional. In 2009, the Ferrari F1-style automated manual was updated with faster shift times—now changing gears as fast as 100 milliseconds. The 612 also gained the 599’s steering-wheel-mounted Manettino dial.

An electrochromic panoramic roof was added and covers the entire roof of the cabin. The neat thing about the new roof is it allows, with the touch of a button, one to change the opacity of the glass. The brakes were not left alone either and are now composed of a carbon-ceramic material. LIST PRICE

ICONIC

AC Roadster What may be first deemed as just another replica of the famed Cobra is actually an 800-hp monster with enough shiny bits to bring back some “best of show” awards if you decide to hit the local car show circuit. Under the forward-hinged hood sits a chrome-laden 6.8-liter V-8 making 800 hp and sitting on a highstrength Chromalloy steel chassis and in front of a reinforced carbon-fiber passenger tub. With a mere 2,200 of poundage

to move around, the Iconic AC Roadster is capable of scampering from zero-to-60 mph in 2.8 seconds. Top speed is an incredible 210 mph; quite scary for a car that has no top. Iconic went the extra mile to make sure the car was something its owner would be proud to sit next to at the cars-and-coffee meets. It uses custom designed gauges over pre-manufactured units, a shifter that is crafted from a solid

piece of billet stainless steel and has an exposed operational mechanism, exhaust pipes that use internal thermal insulating technology to keep them cool to the touch, a touch display to control the car’s various informational displays and GPS system, laser-controlled dynamic cruise control, and a bunch of race-bred bits in the suspension to secure the relationship between the car and its driver.

Carlsson CK63S The Carlsson CK63S based on the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG unites two worlds, sports car and touring sedan, into one continuum. Carlsson pulls out an unbelievable 565 hp out of the 6.3-liter V-8. Acceleration is swift; zero-to-60 mph takes only 3.8 seconds—0.7 seconds faster than the serial edition. For optimal road handling, the Mercedes specialist adjusted the Carlsson running gear to match up to strong engine; keeping it comfortable for long distance trips yet providing perfect performance for a trip over winding country roads. Meanwhile, the new aerodynamics kit and Carlsson-produced wheels renders the necessary road grip and high-speed stability. 866-792-3191, www.ggitunung.com

Hamann Ferrari 599 GTB The tuning specialist from Laupheim, Germany, increased the power of the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano by fitting a highperformance header to generate an extra 53 hp. To ensure that everyone knows about your arrival, a sports muffler generates an awe-inspiring sound. Hamann also adds a few touches of its own to the body. For instance, it adds a front spoiler to the face of the car. The roof is adorned with a further spoiler, which guides air to a rear wing. These wings help stabilizes the Ferrari at high speeds. Larger rims round out the styling changes. 888-9-HAMANN, www.hamannamerica.com

Hamann X6 Tycoon Tycoon has roots in Japanese culture and was originally a synonym for an extraordinary shape—a comparison which can also be transferred to the BMW X6 makeover. Its masculine appearance is mainly emphasised by its new front wings and back wing extensions. The front apron is an eyecatcher with its large air inlets. At the rear section, a threepart diffuser combines with a rear and roof spoiler to ensure optimized air flow. The 23-inch ultra-light forged wheel is a tad ostentatious yet still provides both agility and elegance. Performance enhancements bestow the X6 xDrive35i with an engine output of 360 hp. 888-9-HAMANN, www.hamannamerica.com

Renntech CLK63 Black Series In total, 700 of the 507-hp 6.2-liter-V-8-powered MercedesBenz CLK63 Black Series cars were manufactured. Renntech hopes that a few of those owners would not mind it receiving a small boost in power. Renntech increases the horsepower to 550 and bumps the torque 60 lb-ft in the meaty section of the rpm—where it counts. Renntech also adds its own suspension system, which lowers the cars about three-fourths of an inch. Aerodynamics are further enhanced via a new front splitter, rear diffuser, and rear wing. Interior adjustments, including new sport seats with 4-point harnesses and carbon door panels, round out the Renntech modifications. 561-845-7888, www.renntechmercedes.com 74

Fisker Karma We had our doubts. So many companies pop up with a concept that is more computer animation than actual physical substance and make outlandish claims about reinventing the automobile. Fisker was a step ahead of the rest since it actually unveiled an automobile, in the flesh. Despite receiving no government grants, Fisker is moving ahead with the Karma sedan it first showed at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show and is promising deliveries will began in May of 2010. The 400-hp $87,000 hybrid car will utilize a 2.0-liter turbocharged Ecotec four-cylinder engine from the General Motors family. The neat thing about the Fisker is that it will run exclusively on electricity until the battery runs low—estimated at 50 miles—and then the gasoline engine will kick in to keep the electric motor running for another 250 miles. So, it is quite possible for the daily commute to consume no gasoline at all, making your biggest worry that the gasoline may go stale. LIST PRICE

What about the Jaguar XJ220, you ask? That was only capable of 217 mph but did hold the title of world’s fastest production car in 1992 until being debunked by the 76

Can it compete with the best from BMW, Audi, and Mercedes?

No, it’s not the new Jaguar XF, but rather the same design language carried on into another model, the Jaguar XJ—the car that has never really departed from its styling roots. It is a risky move since the XJ has been the backbone to which the brand stands; however, a necessary move since the XJ sales have been slowly dwindling. Notice the blacked out C-pillar? A styling element that makes the rear area look much bigger. The roof? Well, that’s one big panoramic sunroof. Space? The new car is 1.5-inches longer in the standard model, though an additional 5 inches of legroom can be tacked on to that if you acquire the long-wheelbase model. Weight? At around 4,200 pounds, the new XJ Supersport is close to the outgoing XJR, but still less than that of the XFR. Power? With the new 5.0-liter engine now under the cat’s hood, the XJ Supersport will be pushing 500 ponies down the street.

LAMBORGHINI

Gallardo a lardo LP550-2 P 50Valentino ale ino Balboni Ba o i Rather than go to the bullpen, Lamborghini decided to pitch customers a limited-edition Gallardo commemorating the legendary factory test driver and beloved goodwill ambassador Valentino Balboni. Balboni is not only the human link between the storied Miura and every Lamborghini model that has followed from 1967 to the present, but a spiritual one as well. Every car bears the imprint of his automotive passion and flamboyant driving style. Fittingly, Lamborghini has chosen a version of its most successful model in company history, the Gallardo, to honor Balboni. And even more fittingly, considering his signature tail-wagging cornering method, one designated as an LP 550-2 denoting that its V-10 delivers 550 horsepower to the two rear wheels. The latter means that the technology for creating this special-edition Gallardo involved more than adding commemorative badging, but converting the Gallardo’s usual all-wheel-drive format to rear drive, making it the only current rear-drive Lamborghini model. Besides moving the transmission to the rear axle, the springs, dampers, stabilizer bars, and even the tires had to be 80

2010 Exotic Car Buyers Guide

revised and tuned to coincide with lighter weight and revised powerdelivery system. Weighing nearly 300 pounds less than the Gallardo LP 560-4, and despite 10 less horsepower, the LP 550-2 dashes from zero to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds. More importantly, all that power going through the rear wheels should make it more entertaining to drive around corners, especially since Lamborghini has reprogrammed the CORSA program of the stability-control system to allow greater drift angles for owners who wish to pay tribute to their hero Balboni but still have an electronic guardian angel looking over their shoulder. Other standard features included in the $219,800 base price of the limited run of 250 cars include special exterior and interior stripes, rear-view camera, transparent engine cover, navigation system, and a system to lift the nose over high curbs and speed bumps.

Just as entertaining as the Balboni-edition Gallardo, in its own way, is Gallardo LP 560-4 Spyder the other recent addition to the Lamborghini model lineup—the LP 560-4 Spyder. The fun starts with an acrobatic display performed by the fabric top as it quickly raises or lowers itself around the glass panel that serves as the rear window (up) or windbreak (down). Equally entertaining is the larger 5.2-liter V-10 that grunts, growls, and roars to make 560 horsepower, 40 more than the previous V-10. The V-10 benefits from direct fuel injection (say Iniezione Diretta Stratificata to impress people), a highly-efficient fuel delivery system that increases power while decreasing fuel consumption and emissions. An all-new all-aluminum chassis contributes to the entire car weighing 44 pounds less than its predecessor, yet increases rigidity to a level that embarrasses many coupes. More power, less weight makes going from zero to 62 mph a grin-producing head-bobbing (thanks to 40-percent quicker e-gear shifting) 4-second rocket ride. Exterior changes aid high-speed stability. Interior revisions improve the look and functionality of the dash.

Underground Racing takes the Lamborghini bull by the horns and then forces air down its throat; the product of those force-feeding twin-turbochargers is a nasty 500-hp increase over the already whiplashcreating 5.0-liter V10 engine, for a grand total of 1,026 hp. That even bests the Veyron for bragging rights. The torque— rated at a peak of 811 lb-ft—had to be limited in the first two gears just to make sure the car doesn’t suddenly practice a Kristi Yamaguchi-like single axel. It will take the Charlotte, North Carolina, tuner six to eight weeks to prepare the beast. Lighting up all four tires and maybe even producing a touch of front end hop, the car propels itself to well over 155 mph in the quarter mile, placing the Underground Racing twin-turbo Gallardo into the special collection of very rare and very powerful exotics. 704-361-3443, www.undergroundracing.com

The Murcielago, when it first entered the ring in 2001, featured a ferocious-sounding 6.2liter V-12 and an astounding, for the time, 580 hp. For 2007, engine size increased to 6.5-liters with a corresponding bump, make that leap, in horsepower to 632. Standing still is not a part of the Lamborghini philosophy and so for 2010, a faster, more powerful, and even more extreme looking Murcielago will come charging through the factory gates at Sant’ Agata Bolognese. With 670 horses on tap—due to optimized valve timing and a reworked intake system—the LP 670-4 certainly lives up to its name (LP stands for Longitudinale

Posteriore, the lengthwise mid-mounted engine placement while the 4 indicates allwheel drive.) and the promise of Stephan Winkelmann, president and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, of being “more extreme and uncompromising than virtually any other automobile.” A glance at the radical swept back styling of the new nose, punctuated by gaping air intakes and finished in matte black with a bare carbon-fiber splitter that emulates the nose wing of a Formula One car, backs up Winkelmann’s promise. But there is more and less, in terms of weight, to make the new SV worthy of the

SuperVeloce (super fast) nametag. Continuing the visual inspection to the rear, a large trapezoidal-shaped exhaust outlet dominates the space below the taillights, which is otherwise filled with a Teflon-coated heavy-duty aluminum honeycomb mesh. Below this lies the twin rear diffuser that along with the new front splitter and a choice of rear wings contribute to additional downforce and high-speed handling stability. About those rear wings, the optional ($7,000) Aeropack Wing is a swoopy carbonfiber boomerang affair mounted on a pair of tall grid-work carbon-fiber braces jutting up from the rear panel. of it being the way to go visually, despite limiting top speed to only 209 mph versus the 212 mph Lamborghini quotes for SVs equipped with the low-mounted standard model. Aerodynamics are also a feature of the new engine cover, consisting of a carbon-

fiber framework supporting a cascade of three transparent polycarbonate hexagonal windows for showing off the 6.5-liter V-12. Lamborghini reengineered the framework of the chassis using high-strength sectional steel that increased rigidity by 12 percent while reducing weight by 44 pounds. A new exhaust system increases the vocal range of the mighty 12 cylinders from the rumble of far-off thunder to a sonorous roar while lopping off another 57

pounds of weight. The diet plan applies to the interior as well with lightweight sport-bucket seats, Alcantara suede in lieu of leather trim, and the delete option of the radio-nav system cutting out 75 more pounds. Overall weight loss is 220 pounds, meaning each of the 670 horses only totes a mere 5.1 pounds, enabling them to blast the SV from zero to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds. That’s Super Fast in any language.

LAMBORGHINI Reventon Roadster The rumors have turned out to be true and a roadster version of the infamous Reventon will be available for purchase in 2010. Power for the carbon fiberskinned über exotic will come from the same 6.5-liter V-12 that is found in the coupe but producing an additional 10 hp. The engine is one of the most powerful naturally-aspirated engines currently being built and it, alone, can stand as a masterpiece. Dual overhead cams operate the 48 valves that, in conjunction with the three-phase adjustable intake, enable the car to breathe deep enough to produce 660 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration is plenty quick despite the additional drag associated with an open cabin; the zero-to60 time is a scant 3.4 seconds and top speed will exceed 205 mph. Dry sump lubrication not only makes sure the engine has a constant supply of oil under heavy lateral acceleration, but it also allows the engineers to mount the motor lower in the body and reduce the car’s center of gravity. Four-wheel drive makes the car more predictable and helps qualm any unnecessary drama when under hard acceleration. The same aggressive Raptor-jet-based styling will be carried over to the topless edition both on the inside and out, including the aviation-derived instrument panel that uses a liquid-crystal display. Like the Reventon coupe, the Roadster will be limited to a run of 20 cars but will cost a tad more at approximately $1.7 million. LIST PRICE

Known as the Discovery everywhere but North America, the LR3 moves into 2010 with a different name, a new look, and a new set of engines. Now called the LR4, the focal point of the new car is its 5.0-liter V-8 engine that creates 375 hp and 375 lbs.-ft. of torque. This is up from last year’s 4.4-liter V-8, which could only muster 300 hp and 315 lb-ft of torque. Despite the new name and engine, the exterior is more of a mild facelift rather than a complete overhaul. However, Land Rover did spend a good part of its time reworking the interior to better suit its luxury-seeking clientele. This includes more use of leather, less switchgear, and a more user-friendly navigation system. One neat new feature is the vehicle’s Surround Camera System, which provides nearly a 360-degree view of what surrounds the car; perfect for rock hopping or backing out of a mall parking spot.

Lexus IS F

Lexus has been prying its nose into the sports car market ever since the original IS300 debuted in 2001. Unfortunately, Lexus is synonymous with reliability, luxury, and isolation and not sporty, fun, or...well...interesting. The IS F wants to change all that with its 5.0liter V-8 cranking out 416 hp. The V-8 is connected to a spectacular 8-speed automatic transmission that clicks through shifts and finds the necessary gear with ease, or at least leaps-and-bounds better than what you would expect from an automatic. Compared to the M3, it performs in a straight line nearly as well, only losing points in steering feel and overall handling prowess. Lexus hopes the IS F will be the roots for a new F division that will bring in a younger audience. A younger audience is necessary in today’s world, if you have your doubts, just look at what happened to Buick. LIST PRICE

2010 Exotic Car Buyers Guide

The Lexus LS600hL targets an audience that wouldn’t normally be sought after by a hybrid vehicle; it is stealing customers with its power, fuel savings, and environmental friendliness away from its V-12-powered competition. That’s why Lexus went with a V-8 and electric motor combination making V-12-like performance instead of a V-6 with an electric motor making V8-like performance. It also went with a 600 designation, which aligns it with its V-12 competitors: the S600 and 760. Despite its drawbacks, including its weight, price, and not-very-hybrid-like fuel economy, the LS600hL has set a milestone in the marketplace that the other manufactures will be striving for. It didn’t take very long for its competitors to follow suit; the MercedesBenz S400 Hybrid and BMW ActiveHybrid 7 are already scheduled for a 2010 release. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

LOTUS Evora The Lotus Evora is a GT in a company filled with sports cars and is Lotus’ first new car in over ten years—the last model, the Elise, debuted in 1995. It fills a hole in the line up that was last filled by the four-seat Lotus Excel back in 1992—though the degree to which it filled that void is debatable. The Evora is 22 inches longer than an Elise, but yet still sits four inches shorter than a 911. It’s also more luxurious, less minimalistic, and comes with leather, carpet, and other items the other Lotus cars are normally devoid of. A touch-screen multimedia system and electric power-folding door mirrors are some other neat features you wouldn’t normally expect to find on a Lotus car. The big news is, of course, the 2+2 seating (currently the world’s only mid-engined 2+2), with room for two kids or very small adults in the back. Even if you order your car with the optional storage shelf in replacement of the seats, the driver and passenger, even if they are over six-feet tall, will find plenty of room. To attract more Americans by contributing to its ease of use, the doors are also taller and wider and the sills narrower than the other Lotus models. Power comes from a Toyota-based 3.5-liter V-6 making 276 hp. Standstill to 60 mph should take 4.9 seconds and it will pass 160 mph if you keep the pedal to the carpet. At over $80,000, it’s a Lotus we can all enjoy, but is still not for the masses. LIST PRICE

Sports cars to their bones, the two Lotus twins—the Elise and Exige—are the pinnacle streetable track-prepared cars, making every other car just feel fat and weighed down. The Exige S 260 takes it a step further by offering an experience you just can’t find in any other car this side of an Ariel Atom. The 260 is the same as the Exige S except with a bump of 37 hp from its Toyotaderived 1.8-liter supercharged I-4 for a total of 257. Compared to the still-very-fast Exige S 240, the 260 produces 17 more horsepower but carries 50 less pounds, which was achieved by replacing the front splitter, front-access panels, roof, rear engine cover, side air-intake ducts, and rear wing with carbon fiber units. One little bit of new tech in the Exige S 260 is its launch control system, although employing it will void the warranties on any items associated with its use.

How can you make the 510-hp Ferrari Scuderia Spider 16M, built in a limited-edition run of just 499 vehicles, even more exciting and more exclusive? Easy, just take it to Novitec Rosso, the one of the world's leading refiners of the sports cars from Maranello. The open-top light-weight model is fitted with a pair of Novitec Rosso superchargers. Output is raised to 696 hp at 8,400 rpm, an increase of 186 hp. Other sporty options include 20-inch wheels, sport springs, a lift system for the front axle, and exterior and interior accessories. The tuned Scuderia Spider 16M sprints from rest to 62 mph in just 3.5 seconds and top speed for the open-top mid-engine sports car increases to more than 205 mph. 503-336-0176, www.novitecrosso.com

One of the few tuners to step into the Maserati vehicle line is the same tuner that has been pulling horsepower out of Ferrari cars as if Ferrari was being conservative with its tuning. Setting its sights on the Maserati’s sportiest model, the GranTurismo, Novitec has slapped on a supercharger, reworked the ECU, and added a free-flowing exhaust in order to produce an additional 167 hp and 73 lb-ft of torque for a total of 600 hp at 7,300 rpm and 434 lb-ft of torque at 5,400 rpm. The available front spoiler, rear wing, and side skirts not only add flash, but enhance aerodynamics. A sport suspension and a quartet of wider rims help keep the power to the pavement. 503-336-0176, www.novitecrosso.com

Maserati’s first four-seat convertible

AGAINST

Ferrari California has the folding hardtop

Based off the GranTurismo, the GranCabrio is Maserati’s first convertible since production of the Spyder ended in 2006 and the brand’s first four-seat convertible ever. Power will come from the 4.7-liter 433-hp V-8 found in the sportier GranTurismo S. Although not confirmed, we speculate that the GranCabrio will come with Maserati’s 6-speed automatic transmission. Maserati decided to spend more attention on the comfort of the GranCabrio’s rear-seat occupants by increasing the car’s wheelbase to increase the amount of space behind the front seats. Maserati claims its GranCabrio has the longest wheelbase of any production convertible on the market. The GranCabrio will come with a fabric top, which Maserati feels is more in tune with the modest yet refined manner to which its clientele lives. Delivery of the GranCabrio should begin in the spring of 2010.

Maserati GranTurismo S Automatic

Although the F1-like driving experience achieved through a couple of paddles switching gears is a notable option for an exotic sports car to have, it just always doesn’t work out as the manufacturer intended. The DouSelect was at its heart an electro-actuated manual that could change gears—rather roughly—via steering-column-mounted paddles or in an automatic mode. The transmission was first tried out by Maserati in the Quattroporte in 2004; unfortunately, customer complaints led Maserati to completely redesign the car’s underside in order to squeeze a less-jerky standard automatic underneath the car in 2007. Flash forward to 2009 and we have the GranTurismo, which was introduced in 2007 with the same manu-matic that people complained about in the Quattroporte. So it was only a matter of time before the GranTurismo would acquire the automatic as an optional transmission to be paired with the new-for-2008 4.7-liter V-8 making 440 hp. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

Maserati has addressed all the issues with the Quattroporte and fixed some things we didn’t even know were broken with its GT S model. It starts when you press the sport button, which enables quicker shifts and opens up baffles in the exhaust to allow the Maserati symphony to hit its peak; Maseratis have a reputation for nerve-tingling exhaust notes and the Quattroporte is no different. Power is up via a Ferrari-derived 4.7-liter V-8 making 440 hp. It is connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission that can pop off shifts in 100 milliseconds and will blip the throttle during downshifts like a professional race car driver. Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG / CL65 AMG The true Mercedes flagship does not come with four-doors. Based off the S-class but sharing no similar sheet metal, the CL65, at $203,700, is the most expensive Mercedes-Benz money can buy. That is if you discount the Black Series cars and the SLR and its variations, which really sit in a whole other league. A couple rungs down the CL ladder and nearly 25% less than the CL65 sits the CL63. Unlike the 65, which utilizes a smooth-revving twin-turbocharged V-12 to force its nearly 5,000 pounds of heft down the road in 4.2 seconds, the 63 makes do with a naturally-aspirated V8, a big V-8, to push its 4,600-pound body to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. We say opt for the slightly-less-dramatic less-expensive CL63, which can be ordered with the AMG Performance Package that raises the top speed to 186 mph, just for the bragging rights. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

FOR Lightning-quick shifts

AGAINST Take a look at the C63

The big news for 2010 isn’t the new styling or the jump from 507 to 518 hp. No, it’s the increase in fuel efficiency... okay, we are joking, people that buy cars with 6.3-liter engines won’t be ecstatic about how the car is 12 percent more fuel efficient. The big news for sports car aficionados will be its new 7-speed MCT transmission. Besides the ability to release one clutch just as another is being enacted, the new transmission is made even faster by interrupting ignition and fuel injection during gearshifts, allowing it to swap gears slightly quicker under full load and while in M (manual) mode. All combined, the new tranny can spank off shifts in 100 milliseconds; that’s as quick as some of the F1 transmissions coming from Italy! Besides the lightning-fast shifts available in manual mode, the car also offers a C (controlled efficiency) mode, S (sport) mode, and a S+ (sport plus) mode.

Mercedes-Benz E550 Coupe The E-class Coupe replaces the CLK in 2010, just like the CLK replaced the E-class Coupe in 1996. Although both cars share components with the E-class and C-class, the outgoing CLK was available with the mighty 6.3-liter V-8, while the new E-class Coupe, sadly, will only acquire the 382-hp 5.5-liter V-8 as its top-dog engine. (Unless the Eclass Coupe Black Series rumors turn out to be true). As you would expect, the E-class Coupe holds true to the styling of the new 2010 E-class sedan, including its sharper nose and angular quad headlamps, and even shares some aspects with the CL flagship, including the lack of a B pillar and fully-retractable rear windows. Where the E-class Coupe should excel above the CLK is in spaciousness. The new coupe is two inches longer and 1.5 inches wider than the outgoing model, equating into more room for its occupants. As the SLR Roadster production ends in May 2009, the Stirling Moss production will crank up—admittedly to a rather low total of 75 units. The car pays tribute to Sir Stirling Crauford Moss, a race car driver known for being very versatile, racing in Formula One and in the Le Mans, amongst other events. He is considered the greatest driver to never win a Formula One World Championship. He, however, did win the 1955 Mille Miglia in a 300 SLR for Mercedes-Benz and that is what the 2010 SLR Stirling Moss pays homage to. It comes with neither a windshield nor a roof. The side gills have been replaced with the exhaust piping, the doors have been trimmed (but still open 96

up and forward), the double-bubble headlamps have been replaced, and the hood comes down to a sharper point. The two air scoops may be one more than found on the original car but also serve as roll-over bars. The styling is striking though a bit unpractical. In case of rain, two tonneau covers can be stowed in the boot and will cover the interior. A 650-hp 5.5-liter V-8 will be powering all of the $1-million dollar cars produced. The air brake, a rear wing that pops up under hard braking at high speeds, will also be deployed in the Stirling Moss. (The key word there is hybrid vehicle, since other vehicles, like the Tesla Roadster, run exclusively off lithium-ion batteries) The S400 is based off of the S350, a model not sold in the United States that uses a 3.5-liter V-6 gas engine. The attached electric motor provides the car with an additional 20 hp and a disproportionate 118 lb-ft of torque and is squished between the engine and the 7-speed automatic transmission. Morgan, the auto manufacturers that creates cars that appear more like they come from the bygone days, has reworked its Aero to create the Aero SuperSports model for the 2010 model year. The car utilizes two detachable roof panels—tucking nicely into the boot in case a random rainstorm hits—to quickly turn the car into a roadster from a coupe. Power will still come from a BMW-obtained engine, measuring 4.8liters in capacity, and producing 367 hp. Combine that aluminium-block engine with an aluminium monocoque, an ash wood—yes, we said wood—subframe, and aluminium panels glued on with stuff that makes Gorilla Glue appear just “sticky”, and we have a car makes a Corvette look bloated. Combine those performance aspects with the hand-sculptured body and a price tag that ensures rarity (only 200 to be built for the world) and we can understand why a car like this will probably be sold out before they build the first one. 98

With a paltry 2,500 pounds to move around, each horsepower unit is burden with 4.6 pounds; placing it right in the midst of the supercar club. Estimates have the car being propelled to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, clipping the quarter-mile marker in 11 seconds flat and topping out at more than 200 mph. When the time comes to actually stop the beast, 14-inch rotors in the front are clamped by 6-piston calipers to force the car to a halt in 100 feet.

Nissan GT-R SpecV The Nissan GT-R, the ZR1 of Japan, a car that seems to defy the laws of physics, is now available in a more high-performance trim—at least overseas. The SpecV is powered by the same 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 that propels the base car, but is now regulated by a highgear boost control device, which increases boost for more torque at higher speeds. Titanium-coated exhaust, carbon-ceramic brakes, lighter wheels, an exclusive suspension, grippy tires, and about 132 pounds of less heft to move make the SpecV more oriented for the track than the road. A carbon fiber rear spoiler, grille, and brake ducts, as well as a two-seat interior, and the exclusive availability of Ultimate Black Opal separates the SpecV from the standard car. This car would be perfect for a comparison with the ZR1, but unfortunately, if it will hit, it will be over double the MSRP of a GT-R, placing it more in Ferrari territory and has yet to be confirmed for North America. The life of a supercar can be compared to that of any mega female movie star; it wouldn’t be complete without its top coming off at least a couple years after its debut. The Pagani Cinque debuted last year as a very-limited-edition run of five cars based of the reserved-for-the-racetrack Pagani Zonda R; however, the Cinque was made for the street. Since the Cinque sold out so quickly, Pagani is ready for another five car run, this time with the absence of a roof. The Pagani Cinque Roadster will cost a few hundred thousand more than the roofequipped car and will use the same 7.3-liter Mercedes-based V-12 producing 678 hp. That much power weighed down by a mere 2,668 lb of curb weight equals a zero-to-60-mph time of 3.4 seconds and a top speed likely pushing the 190-mph envelope.

Ford Shelby GT500

Try not to laugh at the 2009 Shelby GT500KR owners when you pass them on the street. Sure they paid $30,000 more for their 540-hp Mustang then you did for newly-revised 540-hp Ford GT500, but they probably have no regrets in today’s economy...right? Taking what they learned from the 2009 Shelby GT500 King of the Road and

going beyond the enhancements on the new-for-2010 Mustang, the 2010 GT500 benefits from a more powerful engine and a revised transmission that not only improves acceleration but highway fuel economy. Rounding out the changes are exterior refinements that more closely resemble the outgoing KR, including racing

stripes, Cobra badges on the front grille and front fenders, a more aggressive front splitter, and a lower-drag rear spoiler. The interior was also not left alone, it now uses real leather, real aluminium, and Alcantara seat inserts that forces SVT to confess makes it the best Mustang interior ever.

It may come as a surprise to you that the Porsche Boxster is considered a lower sibling to the Cayman. Yes, we know that the Cayman is basically a Boxster with its top, but the Boxster costs less than the Cayman and, despite using the same flat-six engine, will come with less power. It may only be 10 horsepower shy of the Cayman, but it carries home a point. The same subtle changes, like LED lights in the back and Halogen lamps in the front, that are also new on the Cayman carry over to the Boxster. The big change is in the engine bay, where you will find the identical 3.4-liter engine but now with direct injection, for a boost of 15 hp over the 2008 models. Combine the new scoot with the 7-speed double-clutch transmission with the optional Sports Chrono Package Plus featuring Launch Control and you have a car that can jet to 60 mph from a stop in 4.7 seconds and, at the same time, make you reconsider that twice-asexpensive 911 purchase.

Porsche Cayenne Hybrid / Turbo S Until it was purchased by Volkswagen, Porsche was hurting. Despite being the master of profits per car, the manufacturer known for selling awesome, though not very responsible, cars decided to turn to hybrid technology to hopefully keep sales up. The Cayenne Hybrid will debut in 2010 motivated by a V-6 and connected to an electric motor to give the SUV eight-cylinder-like performance with four-cylinder-like fuel economy. For people on the other side of the spectrum, Porsche unveiled the new Cayenne Turbo S in 2009 for all those that felt the standard 500-hp Cayenne Turbo just wasn’t producing enough juice. Using the same 4.8-liter twin-turbocharged V-8, Porsche has tweaked the exhaust and modified the engine control unit to produce another 50 horses and 38 lb-ft of torque. The best part of the new more-powerful engine is that it uses about the same amount of gas as the non-S Turbo. LIST PRICE

PORSCHE Cayman S

Don’t let that first glance fool you. Look again, maybe spending a couple extra seconds on the nose and tail. The Cayman went through some changes during 2009. Notice the new halogen lamps up front with integrated turn signals? How about the LED lamps out back? Okay, we didn’t notice them at first either, but they are there and are a part of the subtle styling changes that are now a trademark of the Porsche line over time. However, the big news is actually under the hood, so to speak. The engine is the same 3.4 liters but uses direct fuel injection to produce 25 more horsepower for a total of 320. The new engine is connected to the Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe, or PDK, transmission. The Porsche double-clutch transmission first debuted in the 2009 911, and is now making its way down to the other models; in the Cayman, it improves fuel economy by 13 percent and weighs 22 pounds less than the outgoing Triptronic automatic transmission. When compared to the available 6-speed manual, the PDK transmission equipped with the launch control package is actually able to out accelerate the manually-shifted Porsche by 0.3 seconds to 60 mph. It can change gears in one of two ways: buttons on the spokes of the steering wheel, pressing down for an upshift and trigger pulling for a downshift, or pushing the gear shift lever forward for upshifts and backward for downshifts. Both are unintuitive and take some getting used to, like a time-restricted adult’s first time on a XBOX controller or anyone’s first time experiencing iDrive. LIST PRICE

Sedan

Porsche Panamera ...first all-new model in seven years...

Porsche refers to its first all-new model in seven years as a “four-door sports car” rather than a luxury-performance sedan. Cynics might claim that it is to avoid the wrath of the Porsche purists, still smarting from the iconic sports car maker straying from its roots when it launched the then allnew Cayenne SUV in 2002. No apologies are necessary, given the Cayenne’s sales and on- or off-road performance. Whether you view the Panamera with thumbs up or with your palm shielding your eyes, its resemblance to a stretched version of the 911 gives substance to Porsche’s four-door sports car claims. The tale of the tape reveals the Panamera has a 12-inch longer wheelbase and is 20-inches greater in overall length compared to a 911. This translates into a pair of real-world adult-sized rear seats for long trips along with sedan-level luggage capacity. The broad, sloping tail section has become, pardon the expression, the butt of negative comments regarding the

106

2010 Exotic Car Buyers Guide

Panamera’s styling. Not when viewed from the perspective of form following function, as it incorporates a unique hatchback opening for easier access and added roominess to the cargo compartment. Handling luggage and people is one thing, but people judge sports cars, especially Porsches, by how they handle the road and this is where the Panamera will look good to everyone. The key is a new monocoque chassis utilizing various grades of steel plus aluminum and magnesium to provide the roominess and ride comfort of a luxury sedan in a package that is also lightweight and aerodynamically efficient. The result is a curb weight only about 800 pounds greater than that of a 911 and a similar 0.29 drag coefficient. There are three models of Panamera available from the $89,800 rear-drive S model, the all-wheel drive 4S ($93,800), and, as you would expect from Porsche, a top-of-the-line all-wheel-drive Turbo version ($132,600). The first two share the normally-

aspirated version of the water-cooled directfuel-injected 4.8-liter V-8 that produces 400 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, while the Turbo benefits from the addition of twin turbochargers to make the V-8 pump out 500 hp and a stump-pulling 516 lb-ft of torque. Delivering the power to the wheels in all models is Porsche’s new slick-shifting sevenspeed double-clutch PDK transmission. The S model does zero-to-60 mph in 5.2 seconds with a top speed of 175 mph; respectable numbers for a performance sedan. The Turbo outperforms many GTs and sports cars with a zero-to-60 time of 4 seconds flat and a 188-mph top speed. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) allows sporty but comfortable freeway cruising, while a touch of the button tightens things up for hard charging on a twisting two-lane road. Whether you call a performance sedan or a four-door sports car, it definitely can be called a Porsche.

Porsche 911

Porsche Turbo

The 997 went through its last significant makeover last year, which included the introduction of the slick-shifting 7-speed PDK transmission and major engine overhauls for both the 3.6 Carrera and 3.8-liter Carrera S models. The 2010 models carryover basically unchanged as Porsche turns its attention from the last of the 997-series 911s to the final developments of the 998 series, which is set to debut in 2011. This is not a bad thing considering that the 997 is still the best 911 yet. The real decision is which of the 10 flavors to get: Carrera or Carrera S, 2- or 4wheel drive, coupe, Targa or Cabriolet?

Porsche couldn’t sit back and let the base 911s, Caymans, and Boxsters have all the fun while its best all-around model has sat, basically unchanged, since 2006. So for 2010, the 911 Turbo coupe and Cabriolet will see a boost in power, a new transmission, and, keeping up with the green movement, a jump in fuel efficiency. The heart of the changes is a new direct-injected 3.8-liter flat six connected to a pair of twin variable-vane turbos that make turbo lag a thing of the past. Bigger is better as the new engine pumps out a nice round 500 hp and 480 lbft of torque plus, when compared to the outgoing 3.6-liter, is 16 percent more fuel efficient with 18 percent lower emissions. The new engine can now be ordered with Porsche’s dual-clutch PDK transmission, which in turn, can be mated to a new threespoke steering wheel that has F1-style pad-

dle shifters. Mash the throttle and the new turbo will rip to sixty mph from a standstill in 3.5 seconds. Speaking of mashing the throttle, order the optional Sport Chrono Package not for the gimmicky lap-timer chronometer, but the over boost function of its sport mode that draws forth a burst of 516 lb-ft of torque. Bold muscular styling is another Turbo trait with broad rear fenders and an array of scoops and air vents plus a retractable wing that deploys at 75 mph. The new Turbo convertible model has all of the above plus a canvas top that retracts neatly out of sight in 14 seconds even while moving (up to 31 mph). We like the way that going topless makes the Turbo’s exaggerated lines look even bolder. Either way, the Turbo is an unbeatable combination of exotic performance and luxury that you can live with on a daily basis.

Porsche 911 GT3 We thought Porsche couldn’t do anything more to improve on the last version of the GT3 and we were right. Sort of. For 2010, Porsche has followed the less is more theory to further tweak the performance and handling of the vehicle that embodies what driving a Porsche is all about. Engine displacement has increased from 3.6 to 3.8 liters with a corresponding 20 horsepower jump to 435 total horses. But a judicious engineering weight-loss program for internal components and external accessories makes the new

911 Cabriolet

engine a couple pounds lighter. A new exhaust system weighs less, reduces backpressure for more performance, and gives the engine a powerful deep voice in sport mode. The GT3’s racing heritage is exemplified in new 19-inch wheels with center-locking hubs that drop another 5.5 pounds from the overall weight. Larger front brake discs also weigh less than their predecessors. Lowering the front end and adding a larger rear wing have improved high-speed stability. The excellent non-intrusive traction-control and stability-management systems can now

911 Targa

911 GT3

be turned completely off if desired, although we’d recommend this for track use only. And it’s that ability to make a driver enjoy driving both on the road and the track that makes the GT3 our pick of the Porsches. For those that feel it is necessary to always push the envelope, the GT3 RS is a slightly-more-powerful race-ready version of the GT3. It comes with a 450-hp version of the 3.8-liter flat-six that, with the help of shorter gear ratios that sacrifice a bit of top speed for added aggression in and out of the corners, enable it to rip to sixty in 3.8 seconds.

Phantom Coupe

Phantom Drophead Coupe

We’re talking about tenths of a second here. It’s not too often that the difference between the sporty car and the normal car is a mere 0.1 second difference in the zero-to-60 times. However, the proof is in the pudding. On paper, the Phantom Coupe is 10-inches shorter, has two doors in place of four, is 0.1-seconds faster to 60 mph, and has a six mph higher top speed. All this makes it even more surprising that it weighs 100 pounds more than the base Phantom sedan. On the road, the Phantom Coupe feels much faster and more agile. Push the sport button and insist the car start in first gear instead of the normal second. Lay the accelerator down and watch as the scenery gets blurry and the car effortlessly accelerates into the triple digits. Hit a corner and you’ll notice the weight but, at nearly 5,000 pounds, the Coupe does an unbelievable job of hiding it.

Inspired by the J-class racing yachts of the 1930s, the Phantom Drophead Coupe begs for an owner with a carefree fun-loving nature. Teak wood trim that spans from the rear deck, which hides the fabric-convertible top, to the inner panel of each passengers' door and a brushedsteel bonnet that encircles the passenger cabin give the car a yacht-cabin-like feel; sisal woven floor mats only add to the fun spirit of the car. If the Phantom sedan is for the guy in the three-piece suit, the Drophead is for his pleasure-seeking brother in the Hawaiian shirt. Acceleration and suspension tuning is the one area where the Phantom and the Drophead Coupe are nearly identical. Both cars offer direct steering but never take away the feeling that you are driving a 5,000-pound 220inch tank on wheels.

The Ghost, which was first showed at the 2009 Geneva show as the 200EX concept, is Rolls-Royce’s new entrylevel model designed to compete with Continental GT and other four-door luxury models. Its direct competitor should be the cheapest Bentley fourdoor, the Continental Flying Spur; however, despite what should be a direct comparison, the Rolls-Royce is just a tad too long and too expensive for a side-by-side comparison. The Flying Spur is designed to be driven, unlike the Ghost, which works better as a car to be driven in. In fact, the Ghost it is better aligned with Bentley’s premier models, the Arnage and upcoming Mulsanne. The styling of the Ghost is an obvious nod to the company’s Phantom www.duPontREGISTRY.com

Too similar to the Phantom

line, from the headlamps, grille, long hood, and coach doors. In a weird twist, the Phantom comes in convertible and coupe forms and the nearlya-replica Ghost is expected to get the same treatment. It comes with a 6.6liter V-12 that uses a turbocharger to create 563 hp and has a still-plentyfast zero-to-60 time of 4.7 seconds. The goal of the Ghost should be to increase sales by stealing it from its competitors, yet is priced too high to compete with the four-door offerings from Aston Martin, Porsche, or even Mercedes-Benz. It may hurt Bentley Flying Spur sales and steal a few people from the Arnage, but we have a feeling it may mainly steal sales from its own Phantom line.

How do you prefer your Phantom, in yacht or superyacht form? Available in either standard wheelbase or long wheelbase, the Phantom sedan has pushed the Rolls-Royce cars and brand into a new era of expansion. The flagship sedan garnishes a lot of attention and, at 20 feet in length, it is easy to conclude why. The Phantom replaced in 2003 the previously luxurious but rather old school, technologically un-advanced, and all too unreliable Silver Seraph and Corniche—both of which were based off the Bentley Arnage and Azure from the time when the two brands were sister companies. While Bentley planted its focus on the Continental GT and its many variations, Rolls-Royce redesigned its flagship sedan, which quickly became the vehicle of choice for the rich and famous.

BackDraft RT3 Black Label

Mongoose Grand Sport

With 60’s styling and a modern drivetrain, the Backdraft RT3 represents a true race-bred sports car. Backdraft Racing sells the car as a rolling chassis; all complete except for the engine and the transmission. The customer is left to choose the power plant for the car, with options ranging from a 345-hp V8 to a 630-hp supercharged engine and connected to either a 5- or 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. With a completed weight of approx 2,400 pounds, the car is capable of producing legendary performance numbers. The RT3B (Black Label) comes with a more aggressive black-out package. The interior on all the cars is completed with hand-stitched-leather bucket seats along with a traditional layout of seven electronic gauges. With an array of options available, the cars can be customized to suit even the most discerning taste. 561-752-3693, www.backdraftracing.com

In the 1960s, to combat Shelby Cobras dominance in the race circuits, Chevrolet started work on a lighter and more powerful Corvette. The plan was to build 125 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sports in 1963, enough to qualify as a production car under international racing rules. Unfortunately, the program was axed after only five cars were produced. Today, those cars dominate a hearty price. For the Corvettefaithful that can’t afford a seven-figure price tag, Mongoose Motorsports offers 1963 Grand Sport Coupe and Convertible replicas for under $100,000. All parts are custom fabricated except for the late-model Corvette suspension and drive train. Performance is brisk, considering each car weighs near 2,500 pounds, allowing anyone to live the legend without the legendary price. 330-920-1466, www.mongoosems.com

SMS 460 Mustang

SMS 570 Challenger

The names Steve Saleen and Mustang have gone hand in hand for over 25 years. Mr. Saleen resigned in protest from his namesake company. Subsequently, Saleen Inc. closed its doors and certain assets were acquired by a third party, the outcome of which is now in litigation. Mr. Saleen has gone on to start SMS Supercars, which will build on the architecture of America’s new muscle cars, including the Dodge Challenger, Ford Mustang, and Chevrolet Camaro. The SMS 460 Mustang is the new company’s first dive into the 2010 Mustang and it will be available into two distinct forms: The SMS 460 will come with a 4.6-liter supercharged V-8 making 470 hp and the SMS 460X will house a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 making 655 hp. As always, Saleen’s SMS cars come standard with full certification, factory warranty, and excellent resale value. 714-400-2121, www.smslimitedusa.com

Steve Saleen is the self-proclaimed pioneer of niche manufacturing which includes certification and serialization of cars that go beyond just slapping on superchargers and tweaking suspension components. By living up to the same rigorous test and standards that manufactures have to meet, Steve Mark Saleen (SMS) Supercars, the new company that carries his name, is able to sell his cars new and with factory warranties; excellent resale value is a collateral benefit. The first car under his new SMS nameplate is the 2009 SMS 570 Challenger. Available in two different flavors, the SMS Challenger comes in both a 570 and 570X guise. For 2010, both cars will utilize 5.7liter HEMI supercharged V-8s. The SMS 570 will make a tireburning 500 hp, a 128-hp increase over the R/T and a 75-hp increase over the SRT8. Check the X for the SMS 570X, and output jumps up to rip-roaring 700 hp. 714-400-2121, www.smslimitedusa.com

Spyker C8 Aileron Spyder Okay so more likely to come across a Veyron in your travels than to happen upon one of those rare Spyker cars, but they do exist and, yes, even in the United States. The C8 Aileron Spyder is set to debut in 2010 as an open-top version of the two-door coupe. Like previous models, the Aileron is inspired by Spyker’s aviation heritage. In this particular instance, Spyker is paying tribute to the movable flaps on the back part of the wing that controls yaw. The word Aileron is actually French for “little wing” and is supposed to symbolize Spyker taking a turn to profitability. To bring more people to the brand, Spyker has stretched the car’s aluminium space frame to make the cabin more spacious and improve its rigidity without adding a pound of weight. Power will come from the same Audi-based 4.2-liter V-8 making 400 hp and now available with a 6-speed automatic. We’ll know if Spyker’s plans have worked out once we start seeing more of them on the road ways. LIST PRICE

Using only half the number of cylinders, the SSC Ultimate Aero Twin Turbo trumped the Veyron’s 235/35YR-19 (fr), recording-setting 253 mph average by three mph to become the world’s fastest production car in 2007. 335/30YR-20 (r) With new competition from Porsche-tuner 9ff, SSC decided to up the ante with a jump in FOR horsepower from an already staggering 1,183 to a double-take-inhibiting 1,287 hp. Since wind World Speed Record Holder all over force can make or break a car at high speeds, SSC also redesigned the front fascia to improve the again car’s aerodynamics and help keep the engine cool. To aid pulling all those speed capabilities to a AGAINST Will 9ff return for the title? halt, the Aero now comes with a rear spoiler that will pop up under certain braking conditions for additional down force. Tesla

Model S

Roadster

Seating for seven with a sedan-like architecture, mass torque at zero rpm, no emissions, 300-mile range, and no need to ever go to a gas pump, does this sound like some sort of futuristic vehicle that only a science-fiction writer could imagine? No, it’s what the engineers over at Tesla Motors are preparing for the masses. That’s right. Unlike the Tesla Roadster, which came with a probably-not-experiencing-money-woes price tag of $100,000, the Model S will be a much more reasonable $50,000. Okay, so you will have to get used to waiting 45 minutes for your car to charge back up and the seating for five adults and two children will be...cozy; however, the Model S is the future, here and now, and not just something you dream of while reading about a galaxy far, far away.

More than 500 Tesla Roadsters have been delivered so far, which makes this small Lotus-based vehicle not just a niche or fantasy ride, but something you may actually spot on the road. The Roadster is Tesla’s first attempt at delivering an electric vehicle that can fit into what Americans need out of a car. Power comes from an electric engine that churns out 276 lb-ft of torque a zero rpm, that’s right, zero. Tesla is also adding a Roadster Sport to its model line. The Roadster Sport will produce a bit more power, enough for a reduction of its zero-to-60 time by 0.2 to 3.9 seconds over the standard Roadster. The Roadster Sport’s $128,500 MSRP will also get you an upgraded interior, carbon fiber spoiler and hood louvers, new transmission lever, new sticky tires, adjustable suspension, and a touch screen mounted in the center console.
