Some of this year’s highlights include the.... McLaren MP4-12C—McLaren’s in-house designed and built, lightweight, performance exotic. With roots in Formula One, a safety inspired MonoCell tub, twin turbocharged V-8 and Proactive Chassis Control system, the MP4-12C delivers an exotic car with specs and performance worthy of McLaren’s name brand. Bentley Mulsanne—Bentley’s big, bold, freshly designed fourdoor luxury sedan, inspired by the classic Bentley’s of the thirties. With composite materials, paddle shift automatic transmission, a more fuel-efficient twin turbo charged V-8 and ultra plush interior (craftsman created after 170 painstaking hours) are just some of the features in this sporty sedan. The Mulsanne is the definition of elegance on four wheels. Bugatti Veyron Super Sport—Bugatti’s new world record holder for the fastest production car. The larger turbos, intercoolers, composite materials, increased horsepower, along with an improved aerodynamic exterior, allowed Bugatti to recapture the top speed crown and create another perfect exotic. Ferrari 599 GTO—Ferrari’s 599 is not new to the duPont REGISTRY Exotic Car Buyers Guide, however, it is the first for the 599 GTO. Inspired by the 599XX, with a large V12, and track influenced weight and aerodynamic changes, the GTO is Ferrari’s fastest production car in 63 years. Hennessey Venom GT—Hennessey’s GT is an exciting new 1200 horsepower, carbon fiber exotic that may break the speed record mentioned above in the near future. Alfa Romeo 8C Spider The numbers that make the 8C Spider so special don’t come from the spec box located on this page. In fact, looking at the hard numbers may actually turn you off from the car. To really appreciate the 8C Spider it is best to stare, drive, and stare some more. It may not be the fastest or most powerful car or have the smoothest gearbox, but it makes up for many of its faults with its curvaceous carbon fiber body, docile demeanor, balanced handling, communicative steering, and rip-roaring V-8 sounds (courtesy of Ferrari). Aston Martin’s sportiest model just got sportier

Although based on the same underpinnings that can be found in the more expensive DB9 and DBS, engineers had to do a little bit of tweaking to fit the V-12 engine under the car’s hood. Those changes meant the new car would not meet U.S. crash regulations, or at least until the demand for the V-12 Vantage pushed Aston Martin’s designers to go back and work a little engineering magic. The additional weight over the front wheels is minimal and the V-12 Vantage holds an almost-perfect 51/49 front-to-rear weight ratio. The steering provides good feedback, the suspension is stiff but does not punish, and the stability-control system is never intrusive; giving it, combined with an extra 100 horses, everything a brand’s sportiest model should have. To drive home that point, the new more powerful V-12 iteration of the Vantage is only available with a six-speed manual transmission. 14

Aston Martin DB9 Coupe / Volante As one of Aston Martin’s more successful models, it looks like the DB9 is going to go through some subtle modifications every few years rather than a complete rework every half decade or so. In 2009, the DB9 went through a mild freshening, including more power and a faster-shifting transmission. Now, for 2011, we have yet another round of touch ups. A new front grille, headlamp bezels, new 19-inch diamond-turned 20-spoke rims, silver brake calipers, and a more pronounced “hockey stick” curve around the rear wheels complete the changes on the outside. Performance is enhanced by a new passive damping system similar to the one found in the DBS and Rapide, which not only sharpens the handling when in sport mode but also increases the ride comfort when not. Aston Martin is so confident with the new damping system that it is throwing away the old sport package and making the new arrangement standard.

The DBS is one of Aston Martin’s more expensive, better looking, and, some argue, sportier models. Those reasons are why Aston Martin felt that a soft-top convertible is more in line with what a DBS represents compared to a folding hardtop, which can be found on some of its competitors. The fabric top allows Aston Martin to retain the car’s current profile with the top up and doesn’t add as much weight thanks to the less heavy (and less expensive) soft-top mechanism. Beyond the measurable concerns, some feel that a fabric top is more elegant and we wouldn’t be surprised to hear if Aston Martin shares that sentiment. Aston Martin claims that performance has not been affected by the loss of the coupe’s top, although we speculate that there has to be some loss in the hard numbers since the car is 200 pounds heavier and 25 percent less rigid.

New Performance Sedan

ASTON MARTIN Rapide

The 2011 Aston Martin Rapide is the newest model to wear the storied winged badge, and the first four-door sports car to do so.It exhibits the same graceful flowing lines and exquisite good looks that we have all come to expect from the British car company, but it is far from being merely an elongated, four-door DB9.To accommodate the rear seating area, the wheelbase has been extended 12.2-inches over that of a DB9, but Aston Martin is quick to point out that the Rapide is not merely a ‘stretched’ DB9. Its aerospace derived

extruded bonded aluminum chassis is all new from the bulkhead rearward, including a new fuel tank and commodious luggage compartment even with the rear seats raised. Body panels are a mix of aluminum, magnesium alloy and composite materials for both lightness and strength. Like the exterior, the interior continues Aston Martin’s tradition of using nothing but the most seductive, natural elements, hand-fitted to form a luxurious cocoon for its occupant. Swan-wing rear doors, swing up and out to allow access to a pair of

sporty leather wrapped rear seats. Entry and exit takes a bit of twisting, but once inside the arrangements, though cozy, are comfortable. The seats are elevated slightly to give passengers a less confining view of the outside world. While the rear seats provide occupants a stylish, speedy way to travel, end of day, when you mash the throttle and the Rapide springs from 0 to 60 mph in a tick over 5 seconds emitting a muted but powerful growl, the driver’s seat is still the best seat in the house. ASTON MARTIN One–77 One Middle Eastern customer is rumored to have purchased 10 of Aston Martin’s exotic flagships for a cool $23 million, leaving only 67 for the rest of us to enjoy. Given the meticulously hand-formed aluminum body panels not only provide stellar good looks (Aston Martin sees it as a rolling piece of art), but are lightweight and designed to add an aerodynamic edge. This allows the One-77 to hit a top speed of 220 mph in development testing (more than any Aston Martin production automobile) and engineers are still hopeful to push it even further. The feat was accomplished by way of a naturally aspirated 7.3-liter V-12 engine making “at least” 700 hp and 533 lbs-ft of torque. It is fast, beautiful, rare, and extremely expensive. What more can one ask for at any price. Only a handful are destined for each major country, so consider yourself very lucky to come across one on your daily drive, let alone find one in your garage. Audi S4 The Audi S4, at one time, was able to hold muster against the heart of the Bavarian Motor Work’s M division, but unfortunately the BMW M3 has been making leaps and bounds in horsepower and performance while the S4 has actually reduced its total output (dropping from 340 to 333 hp), engine size, and cylinder count. What it loses in horsepower the new S4 makes up for in torque and much-improved fuel economy. Like the M3, the new S4 is available with a sevenspeed dual-clutch transmission, called S tronic, which adds yet another nail to the manual transmission’s coffin. To help it compete with the 335i xDrive (its real competition), the S4 has an optional sport differential. The S4 can also be ordered with Audi Select Drive, which can, along with working with the sport differential, alter the car’s throttle response, steering assistance, and suspension damping at a push of a button.

S5 Coupe / Cabriolet

With one of the quietest soft-tops in the business and a new direct-injected supercharged V-6 shared with the S4 under its bonnet, the S5 convertible moves into 2011 with few changes. Its biggest worry now comes from the E-Class Cabriolet. Both Audi and Mercedes have decided to go with a fabric tops over the nearly standard hardtop variety now available in the new BMW 3-series and Infiniti G. However, soft tops do have their advantages: they typically weigh less, cost less, use less trunk space, and open faster, and, in Audi’s case, offer noise levels at or near that of a conventional sedan. Audi may exchange its V-8 in the S5 Coupe for the supercharged six in the S5 Cabriolet for 2011 to please customers, although Audi has not confirmed. For the extremists, the RS5 will be coming stateside in 2012 with a 4.2-liter V-8 making near the 444 hp.

S6 The Audi S6 continues into 2011 without many changes since the car debuted in 2007 with a Lamborghini-derived V-10 engine detuned to 450 hp and capable of bringing the car up to 60 mph from a standstill in 5.1 seconds. Quattro all-wheel drive has a nice rear-wheel bias but adds some weight— now pushing 4,500 pounds—to the already ponderous car and with the big V-10 hanging far out in front of the front axle, the S6 has a very front-skewed great-understeercausing 59-to-41 weight ratio. The ride is rough but there is a little magic in those steps that you wouldn’t think is there by looking at the numbers. The Audi S6 would actually do well if it weren’t for how great its competition has become.

Audi A7 Sportback

Unlike many of the other four-door coupes being offered by other manufacturers that have a sloping rear roofline and a trunk, the A7 Sportback follows the Porsche Panamera down the more versatile approach with a hatchback and folding rear seats. The A7 Sportback looks very similar to the A5 Sportback—a model not offered in the United States—although much longer—squeezing between the A6 and A8 in length—and better looking because of it. Where the A7 highly excels is within, offering the normally great Audi interior with soft leather, wraparound wood trim, aluminum, and a large number of electronic gizmos. Powering the A7 is a just-adequate supercharged six-cylinder engine producing 300 hp. The A7 Sportback isn’t overtly overweight so even without an optional V-8 the Audi A7 Sportback is able to hustle to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds; faster than the base Panamera but slower than the upcoming 2012 CLS550. Stylish, versatile, and with a great interior

Audi A8

Normally sitting backseat to the higher volume BMW 7-Series and Mercedes S-Class, Audi hopes to pull customers away from its competitors by offering more-involved handling, the same amount of electronic doodads, and a more luxurious interior. The Audi A8 uses aluminum structure to reduce weight to a couple hundred pounds less than that of its competitors despite the added mass from the standard Quattro all-wheel drive. Power is derived from a 372-hp version of the 4.2-liter V-8; a 500-hp W-12 engine is expected to come here soon. Like many of today’s luxobarges, the A8 and five-inch-longer A8L is full of the latest tech including an eight-speed automatic, adaptive cruise control with full stop capabilities, dynamic and variable steering, and a new version of Audi’s intuitive Multi Media Interface, which now includes a touchpad that can be used for quick scrolling or to do any fingertip writing.

Audi’s “halo” sports car, depicting the brand’s cutting edge philosophy in terms of interior ergonomics, exterior design, and performance prowess now comes in more flavors. The standard R8 is a tasty treat but for those hungry for more power, the 5.2 FSI serves up a Lamborghini-derived V-10, while the Spyder, also now available with either the V-8 or V-10, adds al fresco fun but loses not only the roof but the R8’s trademark styling features of the sideblades and engine-bay window. A menu substitution is the single-clutch sequential transmission called R tronic instead of the dual-clutch gearbox called S tronic that filters down through the rest of the Audi lineup. Three-pedal devotees can still order up a six-speed manual transmission. Quattro all-wheel drive with a sport-oriented rear-wheel bias is standard. For 2011 Audi ups the ante for hardcore performance fans with the R8 GT, a track-oriented version of the 5.2 FSI with a total of 333 units slated for production. The R8 GT’s modifications include a slight power boost for the V-10 engine by way of performance tweaks to the electronics. The big news is the car’s weight, or the lack thereof, which has been reduced by 225 pounds without using any extreme techniques like axing the air conditioner or replacing the door handles with nylon pulls. Instead less comfort invasive but effective weight reducing revisions to both the exterior and interior include a thinner pane windshield and substitution of other window glass with polycarbonate, while exterior panels are carbon fiber-reinforced plastic designed to reduce drag and increase downforce at speed.

New Luxury Coupe

BENTLEY Continental GT Introduced in 2003, the Bentley Continental GT still looks fresh and remains a head turner. Fortunately, the refreshened 2011 Continental GT continues that overall classic shape but like an old friend who has been working out, looks fit with better muscle tone. The latest version of the 6.0liter W-12 can run on both gasoline and bioethanol and makes 567 hp—15 more than its predecessor. A six-speed automatic transmission with QuickShift technology—reducing shifts times down to 200 milliseconds— transfer all that horsepower to the standard four-wheel-drive system with a 40-to-60 rear-wheel-bias split. Both the interior and the info/nav systems have been upgraded. Thanks to a 143 pound weight reduction due to some light trimming everywhere from the engine components to the seats, the revised Continental is faster; zero-to-60 mph requires about 4.4 seconds or approximately 0.2 seconds less than the old car. Besides the car’s updated looks, the biggest news is an all-new 4.0-liter V-8 engine slated for late 2011. Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed The Flying Spur Speed differs from the standard model in a number of ways. To give it a little extra oomph, engine output has been increased from 553 to 600 hp by decreasing friction amongst the engine’s moving parts. To help it in the twisties, the car adds stiffer springs and dampers, larger anti-roll bars, and an upgraded stability-control system with a new Dynamic mode. To assist in steering-wheel feedback and better turn-in, the car features a retuned Servotronic steering system and stiffer rear bushings. It also has been lowered by 0.4 of an inch and now wears 20-inch rims hiding huge 16.5-inch brake rotors. CLASSIC CARS & MODERN SALES Turning A Niche Market Into a Global Phenomenon The investment world was rocked this May by news that a 1936 Bugatti 57SC Atlantic had sold for an estimated $35 million. This record amount for an automotive purchase, eclipsing the previous high by more than $20 million, astonished the casual observer. But Marc Spizzirri of Family Classic Cars long ago predicted that collectible cars would become one of the world’s most surefire investments. In 1999, this 30-year veteran of the car industry began selling off his traditional factory dealerships to focus on high-end vehicles. charge a transaction fee.” If Spizzirri has his way, Classic’s unique array of services will soon expand exponentially. He is currently putting together an instrument that will allow accredited investors to help him consolidate the entire range of goods and services vital to the collectible cars industry. His vision means Classic will soon provide long-distance transportation, car covers, insurance, financing, and anything else a prospective owner might require. For those looking to purchase their first vehicle, Spizzirri offers simple words of advice. “Look for the car that’s right — not just for you, but for the world. You’ll know it when you see it. And you can’t pay too much for the right car, because the right car will pay for itself and then some, because it always goes up in price.” Spizzirri is accessible, whether on the phone or in the showroom. His passion has not abated since opening Classic. BENTLEY Mulsanne W.O. Bentley would have to approve that the “big” Bentley is back. Seven inches longer and one inch wider—yet lighter and totally redesigned from the chassis up, the new Mulsanne is more than a makeover of the Arnage. It’s big, bold, built to order with fresh design that pays homage to classic thirties Bentleys with their huge headlights and muscular curves. Same applies when you open the hood. Power comes from the same basic engine design that Bentley has been utilizing for the past 50 years: a 6.75-lter twin-turbocharged 16-valve pushrod V-8 producing gobs of torque at very low rpms. Thoroughly revised for the Mulsanne, the engine boasts of cam phasing and cylinder deactivation that work to improve fuel mileage by 15 percent. The engine is connected to an ultra smooth eightspeed automatic transmission that utilizes paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel—a first for a Bentley sedan. The Mulsanne’s chassis may be steel, but, to save weight, the doors, hood, and front fenders are made of aluminum and the trunk is made of a composite material. Yet, despite weighing 66 pounds less than the Arnage, at 5,700 pounds the Mulsanne is definitely is big and bold, though surprisingly light on its feet. effort can be set according to preference from one of four settings—from super comfy to stiff and sporty. In total, the Bentley Mulsanne takes 480-man hours or approximately 12 weeks to complete from start to finish.

To achieve better efficiency out of the 2011 M3, BMW has added an Auto Start-Stop Function that cuts the engine off when the computer deems that it will garnish a return and re-starts the automobile when the driver wishes to continue driving. The 2011 BMW M3 also gets an optional Competition Package, which consists of new 19-inch wheels, slightly lowered suspension, and remapped electronic damping and stability-control systems (offering more dampening variance and increasing the threshold of wheel slippage before intervention). BMW Gran Coupe Concept / M6

BMW says the Gran Coupe concept unveiled at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show has been given the green light for production. No word what the official designation will be, but it may fall into the 6-Series lineup as a new four-door version of the 6-Series Coupe. Whether the Gran Coupe is a sneak peak of a new four-door 650i or not, the next generation 6-Series is headed for a more sleek, longer, and wider design, which should equate to more hip and legroom for the rear-seat passengers. The new car should hit showrooms in normal 650i trim in 2011 and in M6 guise in 2012. Like the nextgeneration M5, the M6 may replace its mighty V-10 with a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8. It is up in the air whether the new 6-Series Convertible will replace the fabric top with a hardtop convertible like the new 3-Series and Z4. Until then we have to wait in the doldrums; production of the current M6 and M5 has ended as BMW prepares for the next generation of cars.

BUGATTI 16C Galibier Rumored to go into production for 2013 LIST PRICE $1,500,000 (estimated) model year (a year after production of the ENGINE Veyron stops), the Bugatti Galibier pays 8.0-liter supercharged W-16 homage to the classic Type 57 with its (estimated) long front hood, strong rear haunches, HORSEPOWER and sharp spine that runs down the mid800 hp (estimated) dle of the car. It is powered by a version TORQUE of the engine found in the world’s fastest 700 lbs-ft of torque (estimated) production car; retaining all 8.0 liters and 16 cylinders but will be supercharged instead of turbocharged. Expect power to be in the 800-hp range, more than adequate for a large four-door sedan not designed to compete with the Veyron. That said, other manufacturers and tuners should be wary that once it goes into production, the Galibier is a good bet to become the world’s fastest production four-door sedan. Hedging that bet is the extensive use of carbon fiber and aluminum to keep weight down for such a large sedan. TheIconic Bugatti grille is larger and more upright than the Veyron as a concession to pedestrian safety standards and the front mid-engine location of the 8-liter W16. The hood features remote control opearation and recalls the dual sided opening hoods of thirties classic cars. Gatling gun style circular LED headlights present a menacing ‘move over’ look. The expansive fourseat interior mimics that of an executive jet. One of the world’s most sought after, videotaped, written about, and pondered upon cars could not just sit idle and have the world’s fastest production car trophy sit on another company’s mantle. So on a clear, cool, and sunny day at Volkswagen’s proving grounds, and with a representative of the Guinness Book of World Records in attendance, a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport was able to muster an average top speed of 267.81 mph (although one run going with the wind hit 269.8 mph), setting a new world record for a production car that is 11.6 mph faster than the previous record holder, the SSC Ultimate Aero, and nearly 15 more than the original Bugatti Veyron. Customers’ cars will be limited to 257 mph due to safety concerns.

In order to make sure the Veyron ended its 300-unit run with a bang, Bugatti increased the size of the four turbochargers that feed the 16-cylinder engine with air and added larger intercoolers to make that air more oxygen rich. The result is an increase of 199 hp for a nice 1,200 total. Torque is up as well and now breaks both the 1,000 and 1,100 lbs-ft markers. The suspension was reworked to keep all four powered wheels glued to the pavement even in the sharpest of corners or at the highest of speeds. Aero-friendly exterior changes were also part of the makeover. The car retains its bulbous qualities but now has a more hunkered down look and, thanks to intakes that are now flush with the roof and a revised rear canopy, its silhouette is much flatter, smoother, and more elongated. All these changes were made in order to better control what forces the wind will put on the car at such high rates of speed. Five of the 30 Super Sports set for production will come in the same special orange-and-black paint scheme that set the record.

With competition from some fierce Germans and a British cat, the Cadillac CTS-V enters 2011 with two new body styles: coupe and wagon. The Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon is a five-door hatchback that, like the coupe, shares everything from its A-pillar forward with the sedan. Performancewise the wagon is identical to the sedan in nearly every respect except for the cargo area and a few extra hundred pounds to move. The extra weight may consume a few ticks of the car’s zero-to-sixty time, but with 556 ponies to work with, no one should be complaining. The CTS-V Coupe is a two-door version of Cadillac’s most powerful sedan. The small adjustments that set the coupe apart from the fourdoor sedan include a windshield that sits back an additional two degrees, a lower roof, centered exhaust pipes, and a one-inch wider rear track with appropriate flared fenders.

Let’s face it. The new Chevrolet Camaro put the Mustang on its back in 2010. It launched with a V-6 making what the Mustang’s V-8 was producing and a V-8 making 100 more ponies than that. Ford had to scramble to put matching horsepower engines in place and in the process had to underplay its 2010 Mustang for the then-upcoming morepowerful 2011 model. Smart move considering Ford’s new 5.0-liter V-8 also has less weight to move and will require fewer dollars to possess. Riding on the tidal wave of its current high sales numbers, GM is not planning to sit back and let its main competition play catch-up and instead is working on a hotter Z/28 model for mid-2011 as a 2012. It will likely utilize the 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 found in the Cadillac CTS-V, which should be good for a GT500-matching 550 hp.

The Z06 moves into 2011 with a new Z07 performance option (carbon-ceramic brakes and magnetic ride control off the ZR1, new rims and tires, and chassis and cooling upgrades) and the availability of a CFZ Carbon Fiber Package (carbon fiber rockers, splitter, and roof panels) that push it even closer to ZR1 performance. The sublime F430 is a pretty tough act to follow, but Ferrari is so confident of its successor, the 458, that it attached the name of the mother country, Italia, to the nameplate. Despite the patriotic moniker, the 4.5-liter V-8 powered machine exudes a German influence as Michael Schumacher, seven-time world driving champion and a primary reason for Ferrari’s recent Formula One success, played a key role in its development. Another Italian automotive icon, Pininfarina, penned the stunning aerodynamically-sculpted lines and compact shape, but, ultimately, aerodynamics influenced the styling the most to the extent that the nose sports flexible winglets that not only generate road-holding downforce but also deform as speed increases to reduce the size of the radiator air intakes for less high-speed drag. The 4.5-liter V-8 features direct fuel injection for decreasing fuel consumption and emissions while improving performance. The high-revving 9,000-rpm power plant puts out a whopping 562 hp with 80 percent of its 398 lb-ft of torque available as low as 3,250 rpm. Coupled to the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that debuted in the California, this will move the|rear-drive lightweight (3,042 pound) aluminum-structured coupe from zero to 62 mph in less than 3.4 seconds. Top speed is 202 mph. Of course the traditional flat-plane racing crankshaft and triple exhaust parlay with the 9,000-rpm redline to produce a mechanical aria that is as patriotic sounding to Italian car lovers as the car’s name. Schumacher’s F1 influence is visible in a new racederived steering wheel and dashboard and felt in the direct steering and handling taken to higher levels of grip and stability by computer coordinated control of the E-Diff and F1-Trac as well as ABS braking.

Ferrari has bestowed the GTO designation on only two other cars in its 63-year history. The 599 GTO joins the club as the fastest road legal Ferrari ever. It set a record lap time at the Fiorano test track and blasts from 0 to 62 mph in about 3.3 seconds. While its GTO ancestors were racecars turned into production cars the 599 GTO is a road car version of the track-only special 599XX. Ferrari’s intent to bring street drivers handling and performance just shy of the limit of a pure track special. The 6.0-liter V12 derives directly from that of the 599XX, but cleaned up to meet emissions standards. A menacing guttural bellow transcends into a shriek as the V12 puts out 671 hp @ 8250 rpm and 457 lb-ft of torque at 6500 rpm. That’s 59 more ponies and an additional 9 lb-ft of torque than the 599GTB. The gearbox is the six-speed auto-clutch manual of the GTB with shorter gear ratios and upshifts calibrated to match the 60 ms of the 599XX. The 599GTO is also 220 pounds lighter than a 599GTB. These savings come from thinner window glass, aluminum bodywork plus lighter brakes, transmission and exhaust. New springs and a stiffer rear anti-roll bar were added along with the second generation magnetorheological suspension control system (SCM2). Aerodynamic downforce is enhanced by sharing the undertray and rear diffuser of the 599XX.

To reduce the weight of the 2011 Ford Shelby GT500, special attention was paid to the engine, more specifically replacing the iron block with an aluminum unit. Ford even went as far as to replace the iron sleeves with a new Plasma Transferred Wire Arc (PTWA) coating (first debut in the GT-R with an okay from Ford). The new 150-micron coating is lighter, more durable, and improves heat transfer through the block compared to the old iron units. The lighter engine accounts for 102 of the 120 pounds lost for 2011 and creates 10 more horsepower for a GT500KR-matching 550 hp. It also helps reduced gas consumption to allow it to shudder its gas-guzzling tax. A new Boss 302 will be introduced for 2012, which Ford is dubbing the best-handling straight-production Mustang ever. GTA Spano Underneath the noticeable exterior of the GTA Spano is the heart of a Dodge Viper, supercharged to make 780 hp and tweaked to make a bit more, 840 hp, when bioethanol is employed. Built for high-speed clientele, Gumpert’s newest Apollo submodel takes the car up a few notches in the realm of rarity and speed. Scooting to 60 mph from a stop will take less than 3.0 seconds, shifts times are down to less than 40 milliseconds, and some small exterior modifications both make it look more menacing and give it better aerodynamics. There is no denying that the Apollo Sport performance is nearly unmatched and it is now available in right-hand drive for international export; however, it may have been wiser for Gumpert to have spent its time and money on areas where improvement is needed: the ride is still jarring, the styling is still un-loved by some, and the interior is still minimalistic. 76

2011 VENOM GT

T

he Venom GT may bear some outward resemblance to a Lotus Elise, albeit on steroids, but don’t let that fool you. It may not look like the hulking mega horsepower muscle cars that one expects to see rumble out the doors of Hennessey Performance Engineering’s Texas garage, but this Brit-built car still identifies with heavyweight boxing gloves rather than string-back driving gloves. Hennessey’s opening shot with production Venom GT serial #01 recently rolled out of the Silverstone, England production facilities headed for its excited new owner in the Middle East with a twin turbo LS-series Chevrolet V8 sitting amidships that pumps out 1200-horsepower and 1135 lb-ft of torque. A Ricardo 6-speed manual transaxle (as used in the Ford GT) puts the power to the rear wheels. Weighing in at 2685 pounds gassed up and ready to go, the Venom GT can propel itself from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in under 2.7 seconds. In 14.9 seconds it will streak past 187 mph (300 km/h) on its way to hit 267 mph in sixth gear at 6600 rpm. That, by the way, is well shy of the engine’s 7200 rpm redline. Very impressive stats, but do a little math and you will get an even more astounding number – a power to weight ratio of 2.4 pounds per horsepower. Remember, this is a street legal vehicle not a stripped down racer. By comparison Porsche’s latest Weight Watcher’s track day special, the lightweight 2011 911 GT2 RS justifiably boasts of 620 78

horsepower and a power to weight ration of 4.9 lbs/hp. Hennessey has built race cars with engines producing 1200 to 1500 horsepower, but to make that kind of power requires 100 and higher octane racing gasoline. He wanted to build something that would run on what he calls ‘pump gas’ - the 93 octane premium available at most service stations. Using turbochargers to boost power allows Hennessey to lower the compression ratio for compatibility with pump gas. Horsepower wasn’t the issue as much as how much weight those horses had to shove around. “Less is more,” exclaims Hennessey. “I was thinking a that we can always add more power, but what is holding us back is the weight of the car. “Something around 3200 pounds was a possibility but the Lotus kept popping into my brain. This gave us 2600 versus 3200 pounds.” The Venom GT is based on a Lotus Elise but only the windshield, doors, roof, floor, dash and various trim pieces are carried over. Hennessey cites the cost factor, in time and dollars, of reinventing parts that contribute little if anything to its performance. The biggest savings come from using the Lotus cockpit structure, which has already been certified and crash tested. “You can spend as much money designing a dash and door panels as we did on the car,” he explains. The money he did spend was more wisely spent on an all-new front and rear space frame and suspension and the aerodynamic carbon-fiber body that covers it all. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

The Hennessy Venom GT is noticeably larger (nearly three feet longer and almost six inches wider) and obviously more aggressive looking than the Elise. Aerodynamic enhancements include a front splitter and lower rear diffuser panel to create road hugging downforce. The moveable rear wing, when fully deployed generates almost 1500 lbs of downforce at 150 mph to keep the rear end firmly planted. Even more impressive than the carbon-fiber body work is what lies beneath it. The wheelbase has been stretched nearly 20 inches for better balance and to accommodate the Hennessy Twin Turbo V8. The totally new suspension incorporates an increase in track width - almost seven inches up front and six inches in the rear. Dampers are KW Variant 3 adjustable coil-over units. Tires are Michelin PS2 performance radials sized at 235/30/20 and 335/30/20 front to rear and wrapped around 20inch wheels 8.5 and 12.5 inches wide respectively. Brembo brakes with 6-piston calipers and 15-inch carbon ceramic rotors reside at all four corners for light weight and maximum stopping power. Engine choices range from a base 725 horsepower supercharged LS9 V8 as well as 1000 and 1200 horsepower twin turbocharged variants. The Venom GT is manufactured at Silverstone, England with engines supplied by HPE’s Texas headquarters. Prices start at $725,000. Only ten vehicles will be produced annually. The last time a Texan stuffed an American V8 inside a British sports car the results made high performance history. HTT Pléthore LC-750 HTT is a new automotive company based in Canada but its first supercar still has all the right specs to make it a player in the exotic car marketplace. The Pléthore’s frame and skin are made of carbon fiber, which keeps weight down to a mere 2,535 pounds. Combined with a 6.2-liter Corvette engine supercharged to 750 hp and it becomes readily apparent that the Pléthore will offer mind-boggling acceleration. How does 2.8 seconds from a standstill to 60 mph sound? Or a near-Veyron top speed of 247 mph? HTT says a turbocharged version producing 1,300 hp is also on its way. It even went as far as to put the driver’s seat in the middle of two passenger seats for a better weight balance and handling characteristics. Its price tag of $450,000, although not cheap, seems like a deal when sitting in juxtaposition to its specs.

Boosting Jaguar into the same lofty ranks of power packed sedans like the M5, E63, and CTS-V is the supercharged “R” variant of the XF model. Like the XF, the XJ comes in three main flavors but doubles the total offering by adding short- and longwheelbase arrangements. The top dog is the XJL Supersport, which utilizes the same 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 doing its duties in the XFR and XKR. The styling for the XJ is clearly drafted from the XF. Some may say they look too bland; however, others find their looks just plain old sexy. No matter in which camp you may fall the XJ’s aluminum skin keeps the weight to a minimum and its performance to a maximum. Even with more than 17 feet of car to move, the Jaguar feels light, nimble, and quick. Part of this can be contributed to the electronic differential and variable dampers that it shares with the rest of the R models. Inside are ample amounts of wood, leather, and chrome, but what you may not expect is a 12.3-inch high-resolution screen in place of the normal gauges.

The XKR continues on as Jaguar’s sportiest and one of its sexiest models. In 2010, Jaguar dropped a 5.0-liter V-8 under the cat’s hood and slapped a supercharger on it for good measure. The outcome is generous power; easily enough to leave the whole rear of the car in a cloud of smoke (the same can be said for the XFR) if the throttle is not modulated with the utmost care, which in itself can be difficult since the car’s throttle pushes the engine to start out strong. LAMBORGHINI Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera

The Gallardo has never strayed from its older brother’s ways: same outrageous styling, mighty growl, lightweight materials, all-wheel-drive system, and copious amounts of power. With the LP570-4, the Gallardo once again takes the same steps as its older sibling, this time the LP6704, with some aerodynamically enhancing carbon fiber bits, large rear wing, weight reduction, and just a tad more power. The Superleggera name was previously used on the trimmed-down more-powerful version of the 2008 Gallardo, of which only 618 were ever built. Today’s “superlight” works off that same premise yet is even lighter and more powerful and this time comes with some carbon fiber exterior trim that makes the car appear much more menacing. With more emphasis on track driving, the Superleggera does sacrifice creature comforts for the owner who wants to use it as a bit of flash for date night. The suspension has been stiffened up dramatically and the difference can be felt on anything but a smooth track surface, the glass has been replaced with polycarbonate so it does not reduce outside noises as well, the e-gear transmission is tuned for racer-style hard, fast shifting, and the now-North Americaapproved carbon fiber sport seats are great for hot lapping more than long commutes.

MURCIÉLAGO LP670-4 SUPERVELOCE Hard to believe that the Murciélago will soon be put out to pasture. The final iteration, LP670-4 SuperVeloce, will be replaced in 2012 by a vehicle being dubbed the Jota by the automotive press. The SV moniker has been used in the past on some of Lamborghini’s fastest models and it definitely applies to the LP670-4. WEaring the SV brand proudly on its flanks, the LP670-4 SuperVeloce shows their plenty of fight in this ‘old’ bull, leaping through the gears with acceleration akin to a rocket sled, charging through corners as if sheer will power, let alone huge tires and AWD, can straighten them out, and relentlessly pressing forward toward an incredible top speed with an ear-splitting 12-cylinder shriek. You bet we’ll miss the big Murcey. Lamborghini did more than adjust the springs and dampers to achieve this kind of performance. It reworked the valve timing and optimized the intake to obtain another 30 hp from the large 6.5-liter V-12 engine. Since the Murciélago is big and heavy, Lamborghinis next step was to cut some poundage—220 pounds to be exact—through various carbon fiber bits, an interior with lots of Alcantara pieces, and a new lighter exhaust system. Finally the various aerodynamic pieces, including the giant rear wing, help keep the car glued to the tarmac at any speed.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4/LP550-2 The base Gallardo now carries the LP560-4 moniker, which in Lamborghini world refers to the Longitudinale Posteriore (longitudinally mid-mounted) engine producing 560 horsepower and driving all four wheels. The extra oomph is made more apparent thanks to a reduction of 44 pounds and an e-gear transmission that shifts 40 percent faster in Corsa mode compared to the base Gallardo. Of course the best way to experience the LP560-4 is in the available Spyder convertible. With the ragtop stowed, occupants have full access to the splendid sounds being piped out from the high-revving 5.2-liter V-10 engine. The LP550-2 Valentino Balboni may be all sold out but the LP550-2 package is still available via special order. With power being diverted to just the two rear wheels, the LP550-2 may be more apt to drift than the other Gallardo variations and their four-powered wheels but the ride is still more forgiving than that of the track-ready LP570-4.

Destined to become Land Rover’s sportiest SUV, the Evoque (pronounced “evoke”) is a celebration of the Range Rover product turning 40 years old. When we say “sportiest,” we do not mean its most powerful car. In fact, the Land Rover Evoque will become the brand’s lightest, smallest, and most fuel efficient offering, ever. While Europe is destined for an optional front-wheel-drive diesel, the U.S. will get a V-6 that powers all four wheels. After the first couple years a hybrid version will emerge with electric motors that power the rear wheels, giving engineers the neat ability to more precisely modulate torque to those wheels and thus make the Evoque better off road. We, however, presume the Evoque will be more at home on the city streets than any previous Land Rover. First shown at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show as the LRX, Land Rover’s mini-UV (as it calls it) retains the concepts two doors, although a four-door offering may be introduced in the future. 92

The Lexus LFA is quite the enigma. First it is a Lexus; a brand known for disconnecting the driver from the outside world, not trying to get them more involved in it. Also to make sure the LFA doesn’t sit idle in someone’s garage for 25 years, Lexus is picking and choosing who it allows to purchase (or lease) the car based on how much and where it will be driven and what other cars the person owns. The first true supercar from the Japanese manufacturer was built using a plethora of new methods and with a little bit of help from Yamaha on the all-new 4.8-liter V-10 engine and the sound it emits. The various techniques used on the construction of the engine—like the titanium valves and connecting rods, individual throttle bodies for each cylinder, and magnesium alloy cam covers—has led to a powerplant that actually spools up too quickly for a normal mechanical tachometer to be used. Instead, Lexus had

to employ a digital tachometer just to keep the gauges in line with the actual engine. A paddle-shifted six-speed automated manual transmission mounted to the rear helps (in combination with drysump oil lubrication, a rear-mounted radiator, and oil and water pumps that are mounted low and to the rear) contribute to a nearly perfect front-to-rear weight ratio of 48 / 52. The car uses a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) monocque and aluminum subframes to keep weight down to a not-too-flabby-or-shabby 3,263 pounds. In total, 65 percent of the chassis is carbon fiber while the remaining 35 percent is aluminum. Despite all this technology, the LFA still has stiff competition from the Godzilla of Japan: the Nissan GT-R. The Nissan’s DCT transmission, all-wheel drive, and launch control may make it the winner at most stoplight matches, but the LFA wins the quartermile races due to its more powerful engine and lower curb weight. The LFA also sticks to the tarmac better, feels more nimble, and takes less feet to come to a halt. Nonetheless, it still costs four times more than the GT-R. So which is the true supercar of Japan?

The Elise went through a mild facelift for 2011, which included a redesign of the front end to give it a more Evora-like appearance along with changes to the rear bumper, diffuser, engine cover, and headlamps. Power is still delivered by a Toyota/Yamaha-derived engine that makes 189 hp in naturally aspirated form and 218 hp in the SC supercharged model. This may sound too close to a Honda Civic for some but the car’s incredible low weight puts the fundamentals of physics on its side to achieve acceleration that is fast by anyone’s standards; it only runs out of steam at way past legal speeds. The Elise’s hardtop cousin, the Exige, will likely undergo the same changes as a 2011 Elise in the near future, although nothing has been confirmed. The Exige, with its fixed roof, is designed to be stiffer and sportier than the open-top car. To help drive this point home Lotus has equipped the car with a number of different packages to increase the power coming from the 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. The Exige S 260 is the top model in this pyramid because it produces a stout 257 hp, a 40 hp increase over the top-tier Elise SC. 100

LOTUS Evora S / IPS The Evora is a part of Lotus’s new five-model product plan that should be fully complete in the near future. The base Evora sits as a less extreme and more user friendly alternative to the quick and nimble Exige and Elise cars and follows the same spirit as the Lotus Europa, a car that is not available in the U.S. Unfortunately, user friendliness also means longer and heavier and thus a small slide in performance. Heavy by Lotus standards that is, and although it might not be as extreme as the other Lotus models—although it still seems more extreme than some of its competitors—it makes up for it by being one of the smoothest, quietest, and most comfortable cars in the Lotus lineup. For those that will only take their Lotus in the extreme flavor, a supercharged more-powerful Lotus Evora S will make its showroom debut in 2011. Producing 350 hp, the Evora S should be good for a sprint to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 172 mph. A “Sport” button is a part of the standard sport pack, which will heighten throttle response, alter the stability control intervention level, and activate a by-pass valve in the exhaust. MASERATI GranTurismo Coupe / Convertible With Ferrari’s spine-tingling engines under their hoods, gorgeous lines, and reasonable pricing, Maserati fares well without resorting to a long list of special edition models including those aimed at blistering racetrackready performance. McLaren MP4-12C 2011 Car of the Year


Fueled by its success and the technology derived from battling Ferrari in Formula One, McLaren has developed the MP4-12C to take on its long standing racing rival’s new 458 Italia and the Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 as well. This is McLaren’s fourth road car—the illustrious F1, a one-off M6 GT, and the late SLR are the other three—but the MP4-12C stands alone as as being built and developed entirely in-house. Its foundation is an extremely lightweight and incredibly stout Carbon MonoCell tub that can. along with its occupants, safely survive a high-speed crash. McLaren chose to create its very own V-8. An impressive unit that employs forced induction from a pair of turbochargers to develop 592 horses to take on the prancing horses from Maranello. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission transfers that horsepower to the rear wheels. Like the latest Ferraris, no manual transmission will be offered. Unlike Lamborghini, all-wheel drive was deemed too heavy. A Proactive Chassis Control system dials in race circuit ready handling with a smooth highway ride. A McLaren-developed Brake Steer function decelerates certain wheels—like the inside rear wheel in corners—to help reduce understeer and increase the car’s overall handling prowess. In all, the MP4-12C has both the specs and performance worthy of the McLaren badge and should win over converts from its Italian competitors as well as those from Germany and England. AMG cars have become synonymous with torque, straight-line acceleration, and the neat ability to leap forward, out of the pack, at street lights as if the other cars didn’t come with accelerators. However, once on a twisty road, the AMG’s problems were soon apparC63 AMG ent. Aware of its own faults, Mercedes has engineered the C-class AMG to compete with the BMW M3, Audi RS4, and others in the corners as well as the drag strips. To drop the large 6.3-liter V-8 under the hood, Mercedes had to increase the space between the front wheels by 1.4 inches and, to keep everything harmonious, it spread the rear wheels by an additional 0.5 inches. Besides allowing room for the scorcher engine, it increased the car’s footprint and thus its handling prowess. In all, the chassis and steering have become more intimate and provide better feedback and the seven-speed automatic holds gears, shifts fast, and even bumps off the rev limiter in manual mode. Like the C63, AMG has taken big strides to make the E63 more than just a reworked tuner special. For the 2010, the E63’s front axle sits 2.2 inches wider, which also meant stretching the fenders out an additional 0.7 of an inch. Another move for 2010 was made from the usual E-Class air springs to conventional coilovers in the front. These changes help provide an even sportier ride with better turn-in. In a little bit of an ironic twist, the E-Class’s sportiest model is available with a sports package. It includes even stiffer spring settings, larger rims, and a limited-slip differential; although, it can be a little harsh on any roads that aren’t as smooth as glass. With the rest of the 63s turning in their big V-8s for smaller twin-turbocharged units due to environmental concerns, it is only a matter of time before E63 and C63 take the same steps, which is actually a good thing for enthusiasts due to the extra power the twin-turbocharged motor makes. Until then the big motor muscle of the current engine offering is still available. 112

MERCEDES-BENZ S400 Hybrid / S65 AMG Green Luxury Sedan

With the new S63 moving up to 571 hp with the optional performance package while using less fuel than before, the S65’s glory is getting faded. However, it is still the most powerful car in the S-Class lineup, producing 621 hp and a monstrous 738 lbs.-ft. of torque from a twin-turbo V-12; enough to scamper to 60 mph from a standstill in 4.2 seconds. Of course the bargain of the S-Class world is the S400 Hybrid, which is actually priced lower than the base S550. This is in stark contrast to the Lexus and BMW luxury hybrids, which cost more than their base-engine counterparts. The S400 utilizes a 65-pound lithium-ion battery under the hood and a 50-pound electric motor squeezed between the 3.5-liter gas engine and the transmission to increase fuel mileage with a small reduction in performance.

For 2011, Mercedes-Benz has made its first revisions to the styling of the CLS-Class since the car started the own premium four-door coupe segment in 2004. The new look is striking and it fits nicely with the new round of Mercedes-Benz vehicles including the new S-, E-, and CL-Class cars. The SL65 moves into 2011 as the premier and most powerful car in the SL-Class lineup. Using a 6.0-liter V-12 engine for motivation, the SL65 is quite simply overkill even when set next to the other potent SL, the SL63. The CL63 gives up its 6.3-liter V-8 for a new 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 for 2011. Normally, there is no substitute for cubic inches, unless turbochargers are involved, which in this case means the new engine boasts an increase of at least 18 hp and a whopping 134 more lbs-ft of torque. Wait, it gets better, thanks to a new performance package that further increases output to a tire-wrenching 563 hp and 664 lbs-ft of torque. Wait, it gets even better, because the new engine delivers all this stunning power while being 25 percent more fuel efficient that its successor. One word of warning, reverting to the somewhat contorted logic it has applied to engine swaps in the past, Mercedes has determined that it is less confusing to customers to continue using the CL63 nomenclature, which is ostensibly based on the 6.3-liter engine size, for the latest model despite its 5.5-liter displacement. So despite what we said above, apparently there is no substitute for cubic inches, at least for marketing purposes. It’s all semantics when you shove down your right foot anyway.

The Nissan GT-R, despite setting no price, top speed, or acceleration records, is still one of the most talked about, compared to, and written about cars in the automotive stratosphere. It’s been pitted against everything, even cars costing two to nearly 10 times as much, including the new Lexus LFA and Bugatti Veyron. It garnishes all this attention but the car is almost exactly the same as it was when it first started to go on sale in 2008. Designed to be even rarer than the Zonda Cinque and Cinque Roadster, Pagani has built a one-off model presumably before the Pagani C9 replacement is officially unveiled. Based off the Zonda Cinque, a super-limited street-legal edition of the Zonda R track car, the Tricolore was built to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Frecce Tricolori, or the Italian Air Force aerobatic team. The car has some added aerodynamic and cooling features including a small fin that sits atop the engine cover, scoops on top of the rear fenders, and the front splitter, diffuser, and rear wing off the Cinque. Porsche Cayman S Rumors have the Porsche Boxster and Cayman being replaced in the near future, the former in mid-2011 and the latter in mid-2012. The changes to both will likely be evolutionary rather than revolutionary as the duo may retain the current engine, horsepower, and transmission offerings. And why not, the Cayman is all the sports car one can ask for with its smooth revving 320-hp 3.4-liter F-6 engine mated to either the race derived quick on the trigger seven-speed PDK transmission or a six-speed manual for diehards who prefer to shift for themselves. Speaking of diehards, the 911 continues as Porsche’s flagship but for many the Cayman’s mid-engine layout provides less intimidating handling feel and better balance that the iconic rear-engine 911. Porsche has gone to extreme measures to make the Boxster Spyder the lightest model currently available: the gas tank now carries 2.6 fewer gallons, the inner door handles are now fabric pulls, and the doors themselves have been switched out with aluminum units. Ditto the steel rear deck lid which is replicated in aluminum. The weight reduction program also replaces the power convertible top with a skimpy covering that is actually more weather proof than it looks although Porsche suggests limiting its use to below 125 mph. The Boxster Spyder diet plan relegates the radio and A/C to the option list. The list goes on for the hardcore drivers with obsessed with shaving weight, up to the $1,700 lithium-ion battery option that knocks off a whopping 22 pounds. In total, 176 pounds have been shed for drivers looking for a Porsche that replicates the look and feel of the classic RSK Spyders of the 60s. But if less is more, more is even better as the engine now puts out a Cayman S equaling 320 hp and the suspension recalibrated for a lower and stiffer ride. All of this subtraction adds up to a $3200 bump in price, but that’s a small price to pay to recapture the pure essence of Porsche handling and agility.

PORSCHE 911 TURBO / GT3 / GT2 RS With an updated Turbo in 2010 and a new Turbo S for 2011, Porsche will be quickly moving forward and revealing an allnew 911 under the codename 991 for 2011 or 2012. The Porsche 911 is designed for performance first, with luxury, amenities, and passenger space falling somewhere behind that on the priority-level spectrum. This is easily apparent from the wide assortment of sporty editions that are available. The base 911 comes with a 345-hp 3.6-liter engine but power jumps up to 385 hp in “S” trim via an engine increase to 3.8 liters. Less sophisticated and with a heavier focus on racing sits the naturally aspirated 435-hp rear-wheel-drive GT3. The GT3 is considered to be the pure sports car of the lineup that, although faster to bite back, is more rewarding than the others. Climbing the ladder a notch for those that want the spirit of the GT3 in a package that is just a bit more extreme is the 450-hp GT3 RS, which offers a small bump

Porsche Panamera Turbo Only with us for one year and the Porsche Panamera is already pulling out a few tweaks for the 2011. Designed to help make all the V-8 Panameras a little greener is a new brake-energy recuperation system and lower rolling-resistance tires. The former helps reduce the load on a new alternator by utilizing the energy used during braking to recharge the battery. A new powerkit for 2011 will raise output by 40 hp in Turbo models for a new total of 540. Handling is being stepped up via the company’s new Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV) system. The system brakes the inner rear wheel during cornering to further assist the rotational forces and improve handling. Not that there were any complaints about the car’s handling. Porsche 918 Spyder Best Green Exotic

It’s a rare car that sets tongues wagging on the blogs of both automotive enthusiasts and “green” techies, but then again the Porsche 918 Spyder is no ordinary car. It is Porsche’s first true supercar since the Carrera GT (although the rest of the Porsche lineup does consist of super cars) but with a totally different approach toward generating incredible lap times and sumptuous levels of power via an extremely fuel efficient and environmentally friendly drivetrain. Supplementing a mid-chassis mounted 500-plus-hp racing derived 3.4-liter V-8 is a trio of electric motors—one in the transmission and two at the front axle—with a combined output of 218 hp. The latter allow the car to operate as a front-wheel driven electric vehicle or as a hybrid in conjunction with the gasoline engine with power available to all four wheels. The efficiency of the 918 Spyder is directly determined by the driver in both what mode he chooses and, of course, how much restraint he or she has on the gas pedal. E-Drive operates the 918 Spyder on electric power alone and is good for up to 16 miles before the lithium-ion batteries located behind the passenger compartment run out of juice. The Hybrid mode allows the engine to come into play to increase the car’s range and reserve 132

apier Automotive is betting that its cars will capture the very essence of the thin, light, fast, and well-balanced thrusting swords that were made infamous by the sport of Fencing and that also carry its name. Based out of Boston, Massachusetts, Rapier has been methodically preparing its mid-engine supercar for the past five years and is now ready to take deposits, here, in 2010. Billed as the most exclusive hand-built supercar on the planet, the Rapier Superlite Coupe, or SL-C for short, offers a multitude of engine offerings, exterior colors, interior schemes, and a host of other fully customizable options. The car utilizes an aluminum chassis and is finished with high-quality body panels that given the SL-C a LeMans-racecar-like look. The car offers three Chevrolet-derived engine choices, all of which can be transplanted underneath a clamshell-style hood behind the passenger compartment: the base 6.2-liter 480-hp LS376 V-8, the 7.0-liter 505-hp LS7 V-8, or the 6.2-liter supercharged 638-hp LS9 V-8 from the ZR1. The monstrous power created by each one of these engines is diverted to the rear wheels through a six-speed Ricardo manual transmission. With a curb weight of only 2,375 lbs— nearly 1,000 pounds less than the Corvette ZR1—performance is nothing short of extraordinary. Zero-to-60 mph takes 3.2 seconds, the quarter mile will pass in 10.6 seconds, and the top speed is a staggering 222 mph. To slow the car back to legal speeds, the SL-C uses 13-inch rotors in the front and 11.8-inch rotors in the back, both of which are pinched by six-piston calipers. A test drive can be arranged out of Boston with one of two shows cars, chassis number one and chassis number two. Best NEW Luxury Sedan

ROLLS-ROYCE Ghost Rolls-Royce is quick to point out that 80 percent of the Ghost buyers are new to the Rolls-Royce brand and represent a younger demographic (most likely because the Ghost is designed to be driven and not driven in). Contributing to this are its 17-inch shorter length and 350 pounds lighter weight versus a Phantom sedan. Attributes that make it the sportiest sedan in the RollsRoyce lineup. With performance numbers to match as the zero-to-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds is comparable to what a base Corvette could do a few years ago. Although it shares 20 percent of its bits with the BMW 7-Series, Rolls-Royce engineers have been diligent in integrating those parts to arrive at the level of comfort, silence and mystique once expects when owning and driving a Rolls. Nonetheless, in dialing in the expected levels of luxury, those engineers have not dialed out driving pleasure. Notably the Ghost delivers strong cornering grip along with positive feel and feedback through the steering. The Rolls-Royce Phantom sedan is a hulking limo, and its large upright grille only adds to the imposing nature of the giant. It measures 19 feet in length in normal trim, outstretching the Bentley Muslanne and Maybach 57, by a whopping 11 inches and seven inches, respectfully. The only competitor to outsize the Phantom in the ultra-luxury car market without resorting to an over-stretched limo is the Maybach 62, which eats 243 inches of asphalt in length, but the Phantom Extended Wheelbase (EWB) is only a few ticks behind with 239 inches. Luckily all come with large engines for propulsion. Ruf RGT-8 The Ruf RGT is moving into its third iteration and with it comes a big change compared to the 996-based RGT and the first 997-based RGT: a high-winding V-8 for propulsion. The Ruf-designed engine is located in the rear and utilizes a 180-degree flat-plane crankshaft, four valves per cylinder, and multipoint fuel injection to produce an immense 550 hp at a sky-high 8,500 rpm; only a few ticks off from Ferrari’s racecar-inspired 4.5-liter V-8 in the 458 Italia, which produces 562 hp at 9,000 rpm. For Diko Sulahian, founder of Giovanna Wheels, the company and its innovative trend-setting designs mean more than creating an image of “high-roller” glitz and glamour. He says he has always been a car guy and that passion for cars was the main reason he really got into wheels. “I had ideas and images running through my mind that I was unable to do while distributing other brands.” The motivating force for him to do something was the birth of his first child. Writing his daughter’s name, Giovanna, on the birth certificate inspired the name of his new wheel company. And despite not having any formal technical or design background, Diko does know the wheel business. “In this business you quickly learn the facts about the ‘do’s and don’ts’ of both technical and design issues since they closely overlap,” he states. He is credited with being the first to go to 21-inch diameter wheels and then pushed the envelope again and again with 23-, 24-, 25-, and 26-inch wheels. Despite his reputation for pushing the limits, Diko has both aesthetic and safety concerns about going too big. So it is not a surprise that he feels obligated to closely work with tire companies to create the right plus-size tires according to the load rating on cars. He wants to make sure that fitting larger than factory-size wheels does not jeopardize the ride, suspension parts, and overall safety. As for his immediate family, which now includes three children who all have companies named after them, Diko says he does not foresee any new “little companies” on the way. That doesn’t mean the business will stop growing. Diko is confident that a new manufacturing technology that reduces wheel weights by at least 30 percent will help take designs to a new level while increasing gas mileage in the midst of the current green movement.
