PUBLISHER’S LETTER

2013 EXOTIC CARS

W

elcome to this year’s version of the duPont REGISTRY™ Exotic Car Buyers Guide. As always, there is a visual feast for the eyes of the enthusiast, and there is the enduring shelf-life of a full year’s exposure for our advertisers. The highlights of this issue are:

Ferrari F12 berlinetta: We have been patiently waiting for a worthy 599 successor. Their most powerful production car sports 730 hp and adds more down-force via some clever aero tricks. Weight reduction and less drag are direct results of Formula 1 successes. Once again, Ferrari has raised the bar for production supercars. McLaren MP4-12C Spider: Going topless usually results in penalties. Only 88 pounds heavier than its counterpart, performance is not sacrificed for sunshine. The coupe was so well engineered that no additional bracing was required from losing the roof. As far as convertibles go, it tops our list. Bentley Continental GT Speed & V8: Going fast with class is taken to a new level with the GT Speed. With more horsepower and torque, Bentley has been able to push past 200 mph with none of the sacrifices made with the Supersports. Because the Twin Turbo W-12 is so powerful, the Continental will be available for the first time with a V-8. Both cars feature a new 8-speed ZF auto box for greater fuel economy, and the V-8 can disable four of its cylinders in certain conditions. This new 4.0L is rated at 500 hp, enough to make choosing between V-8 or W-12 more difficult. Aston Martin One-77: With only 77 units to be produced, this is an instant collectible. An astounding 750 hp trumps any other V-12 and pushes past 220 mph. Having seen one in person at our Cars & Coffee event, the price can easily be justified in the hand-built, old-world craftsmanship that only Aston can provide. SRT Viper: America’s V-10 Snake returns all-new with help from new owner Fiat. Italian leather and an ergonomic layout give Viper a world class interior that we have longed for. Leaner, meaner, and far more user friendly, this isn’t your father’s Dodge. Porsche Panamera Turbo S: We like fast sedans, but that they are able to maintain triple-digit speeds without breaking a sweat really makes us smile. Almost 600 lb-ft of torque are combined with the same sensibilities and plush accoutrements of its Panamera siblings. If you floor it and head due east, you might slow the earth’s rotation. This year, we have expanded our circulation to include a proprietary list of auto-enthusiasts that will surely enjoy the guide. Also, this bonus circulation will provide more exposure for our “picks” and our advertisers. Should you end up driving one of our listed exotics, buckle up and …

Happy Motoring!

fter nearly a 10-year hiatus, the NSX is less than three years away from returning to take its place as Acura’s halo car. Although technical details are scarce at this point, this much is known: the new NSX will still sport a mid-mounted V-6 engine like its predecessor and will be on the market by 2015. Unlike the last NSX, which was rear wheel drive only, the new car will feature a Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system (Super Handling All Wheel Drive). Coupled with a next-generation VTEC V-6 (featuring direct injection at last) and a paddle-shifted dual clutch transmission, the two electric motors up front help provide added thrust in cornering and low-traction conditions. These motors should also help boost the NSX’s eco-cred, setting it apart from other high-end sports cars in the $100,000-and-up stratosphere. Of course, the NSX will also need plenty of power to back up its futuristic, low-slung looks. We’d hope to see at least 400 hp on tap, possibly more if the NSX hopes to keep up with similarly powered 911s and Audi R8s. ASTON MARTIN ONE-77

he One-77 sits long, low and raked at the top of Aston Martin’s lineup. True to its name, only 77 examples will be made, and snapping one up now could be a bit of a challenge. We’re guessing Aston Martin is playing it a bit coy with their figures to make the ownership experience all the more special.

he Rapide might be the most sophisticated way ever imagined to get the kids to school on time. ASTON MARTIN V12 VANTAGE

he V-12 Vantage is a pumped-up bully of an Aston Martin. Into the smaller, lighter 2-seat body of the Vantage, the company shoehorns their 6.0-liter V-12, here tuned to give 510 hp and 420lb-ft of torque. Not content to let its hot rod fly below the radar, Aston has also outfitted the V-12 Vantage with more scoops than a Baskin Robbins, many of which are outlined in carbon fiber. To keep the “shiny side up,” so to speak, a carbon fiber front splitter and rear diffuser add valuable stability at high speed.

I

This grand tourer isn’t built for poseurs. A 6-speed manual is the only transmission offered, and the cabin, while a nice place to spend time, does away with many of the luxuries present in other Aston Martin models in the name of simplicity. Exposed carbon fiber and alcantara replace leather hides, and the standard stereo pumps out just 160 watts. No matter; the V-12 out front makes its own thumping soundtrack.

ASTON MARTIN VIRAGE

onceived as a DB9 with slightly more style and clout, the Virage fills the wallet space between the DB9 and Vanquish. At $208,295, buyers will need a pretty thick wallet. The 6.0-liter, 48-valve V12 seen elsewhere in Aston’s lineup is once again employed here, to the tune of 490hp and 420lb-ft of torque. A 6-speed “Touchtronic 2” automatic transmission utilizes paddle shifters, a carbon fiber prop shaft and a limited-slip differential to get power to the ground. Time those shifts right and 60mph comes up in less than 4.6 seconds, on to a top speed of 183 mph. These

C

numbers come perilously close to stepping on the new Vanquish’s toes, but that car has something going for it that the Virage doesn’t: a fresh look. The Virage looks, and for the most part is, much the same as a DB9 that first rolled out in 2004. The interior and exterior designs as well as the running gear have been massaged over the years in between, but for the most part, the cars are very close siblings. In more Aston-heavy parts of the country, a Virage probably won’t raise any eyebrows. For the buyer that just emptied their bank account to the tune of more than $200,000, this isn’t good news.

ASTON MARTIN VANQUISH

W

ho can forget those immortal words: “Now pay attention Bond, this is your Aston Martin.” They ended 007’s brief and over-commercialized flirtation with BMW and put him firmly back in his rightful place, behind the wheel of an Aston. That was 2001, the film ‘Die Another Day,’ and the car, the sensational big-V12 Aston Martin Vanquish. The hairy-chested Vanquish stayed in production till July 2007 when it was replaced by the slightly less testosterone-fueled DBS. While it looked cool, Daniel Craig got to debut it in ‘Casino Royale’ where it entered the Guinness Book of Records for the most body rolls - seven complete turns to be precise - the DBS was no Vanquish. Thankfully, after five years of production, the DBS has been laid to rest and the Vanquish name is back, in a successor that packs more raw power, more stretch-out cabin space and every body panel crafted from lightweight carbon fiber. A smidgen longer, taller and wider than the DBS, the Vanquish focuses on offering driver and passenger - two seats are standard, 2+2 an option - a fair bit more interior space. The seats now go back further, there’s more elbow room and headroom, and there’s now space in the trunk to carry more than a Walther PPK. Powering this new Aston flagship is a heavily re-worked version of the Cosworth-designed 6.0-liter V-12. A revised block, new cylinder heads, bigger throttle bodies and dual variable valve timing conjures-up an extra 50 ponies taking max power up to 565 hp. Torque also increases too, from 420 lb-ft to 457 lb-ft.

30

2013 Exotic Car Buyers Guide

Using a new motorsport-derived launch-control program - a first for an Aston Martin - this new Vanquish should cover the 0-to-60 mph dash in around 4.0 seconds. That’s a biggish improvement on the DBS’s 4.3 second time. Though for some reason, top speed drops by 8mph, from 191 mph for the DBS to a still pretty-rapid 183mph. If there’s a challenge for this new Vanquish, it’s that the supercar world has moved on in just the past few months. Ferrari raised the bar with its brand new, blunt-instrument F12 Berlinetta with its massive 730 hp punch. Even Chrysler’s new SRT Viper, while not a real rival, will deliver a wild 650 hp. Add to that, purists are not going to like the fact that the new Vanquish won’t be offering a manual transmission like the old DBS, leaving it to a six-speed ZF automatic to do the shifting. And while this new Vanquish, which goes on sale in early 2013, undoubtedly looks breathtaking, is it really that much different from the old DBS, which looked a lot like the DB9, which looks pretty similar to the Virage? You could argue that Aston designers are becoming as ideas-starved as the guys who design Porsche’s 911. Yes, that wild, Mexican Wave-like lower air-splitter at the front will turn heads, as will those big, blistered arches over the wheels. But only the cognoscenti are likely to see it as something other than another DBS Carbon Black-like limited edition. A true Vanquish deserves more than that. More shaken, less stirred.

ASTON MARTIN V8 VANTAGE S

uch like the Virage serves as a stepping stone between the DB9 and Vanquish, the V-8 Vantage S performs a similar function: provide customers a step up from the entry-level V-8 Vantage without ponying up for the high-octane V-12. A mild 10 hp bump from the V-8 Vantage brings 430 in total. Torque is 15 higher at 361 lb-ft. Top speed- 190 mph plays 180. Key among the mechanical changes is a new 7-speed automated manual transmission, which just trickled down to the normal Vantage in a midyear model update. One can be reasonably sure a version of this transmission will even-

M

tually find itself in the rest of Aston’s range. The most obvious differences are some of the styling and aero cues taken from the V-12 Vantage. A carbon fiber splitter is added up front and a carbon diffuser out back. Weight drops by 46 pounds, to 3,549. The end result is exactly as described on the packaging; a little quicker, faster, and sharper, but not enough so to step on the V-12’s toes, which is $44,000 dearer. If you’re drawn to the V-12 Vantage’s looks but are satisfied with the V8’s thrust, then the V-8 Vantage S is your car. For the truly speed addicted, though, there can be no substitute.

RS4

Audi unveiled the newest generation of the RS4 Avant back in February, and in doing so, gave U.S. Audi fans a tempting look at yet more forbidden fruit. Officially as of this writing, the RS4 will not be for sale in the U.S. That’s a shame, because we’re going to be deprived of a truly sporting Audi. The RS4’s underpinnings strongly echo those of the RS5, including the 4.2-liter, 450 hp V-8 engine, 7-speed S-tronic double clutch gearbox, Quattro all-wheel drive and liberal use of aluminum in the suspension pieces. It could be a highly potent alternative to the only other barn-burning family cars on this side of the pond, the Cadillac CTS-V wagon and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG wagon.

LIST PRICE $196,800 (estimated) ENGINE 5.2-liter V-10 HORSEPOWER 560 hp TORQUE 398 lb-ft 0–60 3.6 seconds WEIGHT 3,538 lb

Audi giveth, and Audi taketh away. So goes the story with the RS4 and the RS5, because one is destined for American shores while the other is not. At this writing, only the RS5 has been federalized, and as a result, it’s the only naturally aspirated, high-horsepower Audi 4-seater you can buy in the states at the moment. Rather than bemoan the absence of its more practical RS4 sister, let’s at least rejoice that Audi is importing either of them at all. The RS5’s mechanicals mirror the RS4’s, which is to say it shares the same 450-hp, 4.2-liter V8 engine, 7-speed S-tronic dual clutch gearbox, Quattro all-wheel drive with 40:60 front/rear torque split, and selectable driving dynamics system. LIST PRICE $70,000 (estimated) ENGINE 4.2-liter V-8 HORSEPOWER 450 hp TORQUE 317 lb-ft 0–60 4.6 seconds WEIGHT 4,000 lb

RS5

Last year, Audi took the everyday-friendly R8 and made it just a bit hardcore: starting with the optional 5.2-liter V-10 of the base car, they’ve upped the ante to 560hp and 398lb-ft of torque. An R-Tronic sequential manual gearbox is standard, and 180 pounds has been shaved from the car through a fanatical use of carbon fiber. The front and rear bumpers, side blades, mirror covers and rear wing are all fashioned from the stuff, and further lightening measures have been extended to the battery, rear hatch, braking system and even the carpet. How Audi can make a 2-seat sports car’s carpeting lighter by 17.4 pounds, we’ll never know. Suffice it to say, R8 GT drivers will need to endure a bit more road noise than they may otherwise be accustomed to.

AUDI LIST PRICE $110,000 ENGINE 4.0-liter turbocharged V-8 HORSEPOWER 520 hp TORQUE 479 lb-ft 0–60 4.2 seconds WEIGHT N/A

Besides starring as the excellent car chase protagonist in the film Ronin, the S8 has led a fairly low key life at the top of the Audi sport sedan range. The last generation was equipped with a high-strung 5.2 liter V-10 engine; a fine powerplant, but not one that provided the sort of torque-rich thrust that the pilot of a full-size sports sedan might be accustomed to. To remedy this, Audi has provided the new S8 with the familiar 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 seen elsewhere in the S range by now, although this one is boosted to the tune of 520hp and 479lb-ft of torque. Thanks to numerous fuel-saving technologies, the new mill provides 15-percent greater horsepower while simultaneously reducing fuel consumption by 23 percent.

S7

Two turbocharged peas in the same pod, the S6 and S7 require just one choice: do you want traffic around you to stop and stare, or would you rather slip by unnoticed? While these two are essentially mechanical twins, their outward appearances couldn’t be more different. And although they both display more pumped-up, athletic appearances than their A6 and A7 forebears, the essential shapes remain basically unchanged: the S7 is a swoopy fastback that demands admiration, while the more staid S6 sports a familiar 3-box sedan shape that is all too happy to go unnoticed in the fast lane. Let somebody else collect the traffic citation while you make it to your next appointment at 155 mph. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

The TT RS starts with a slightly offbeat warble of an exhaust note, thanks to its turbocharged inline 5-cylinder layout. Imagine a Lamborghini Gallardo V-10 with half its cylinders missing and you won’t be far off. This powertrain slingshots the TT-RS to 60mph in a blink over 4 seconds flat, onto a top speed of 174mph. Those are giant-killing numbers by any measurement, especially when you consider that a 911 Carrera S takes 4.3 seconds to get to 60 mph and cost almost $40,000 more. Quattro all-wheel drive and magnetic ride suspension keep the coupe glued in corners, aided by a 3,300-pound curb weight courtesy of its mostly-aluminum spaceframe design. While that’s still about 300 pounds heavier than the club racer Cayman R, the TT RS is nonetheless ready for the fight over small-coupe supremacy. LIST PRICE $57,725 (estimated) ENGINE 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-5 HORSEPOWER 360 hp TORQUE 317 lb-ft/343 lb-ft– 0–60 4.1 seconds WEIGHT 3,306 lb

ast year, Audi took the everyday-friendly R8 and made it just a bit hardcore: starting with the optional 5.2-liter V-10 of the base car, they’ve upped the ante to 560hp and 398lb-ft of torque. An R-Tronic sequential manual gearbox is standard and sadly, there will be no stick-shift model of the 2013 Audi R8 GT. Also, 180 pounds has been shaved from the car through a fanatical use of carbon fiber. The front and rear bumpers, side blades, mirror covers and rear wing are all fashioned from the stuff, and further lightning measures have been extended to the battery, rear hatch, braking system and even the carpet. How Audi can make a 2-seat sports car’s carpeting lighter by 17.4 pounds, we’ll never know. Suffice it to say, R8 GT drivers will need to endure a bit more road noise than they may otherwise be accustomed to, but what’s a little more road noise if it means more power to the wheels? Audi has given the R8 some external changes in previous years, but this year’s R8 GT has gone under the knife and has received a much more noticeable facelift. Redesigned LED headlights and tail lights, modified front bumper and grille, larger diffuser, and new circular tailpipes are the biggest changes of them all. The 2013 Audi R8 GT looks to be the most stylish and powerful iteration to date. In 2015 this model is going to be replaced by a second generation model that is still very much under wraps. The fact that Audi is planning so far ahead for the R8 is a great sign.

BMW M SERIES M5 If $90-grand could ever be deemed a bargain, then BMW’s fifth-generation M5 is surely the bargain of the year in the luxury performance sedan world. You could spend a week attempting to discover all the brilliant, performance-enhancing technology that has gone into this car, but all you need to know is that its 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8, with its massive 560 hp output and zero-to-60 in 3.7 second sprinting, is the benchmark of the world. Its seven-speed doubleclutch automatic is a masterpiece of lightning-fast shifts and right-now response. And because it’s in the car’s pedigree, you can get the M5 with a sixspeed manual-one of the few left. All this substance is clothed in one of the most discreet, elegantlyrestrained wrappers out there. If you could have only one car in life, the M5 should surely be it.

M3 With the sensational pocket-rocket 1-Series M Coupe officially sold-out - a mere 1,000 made it to the Land of the Free-once again the M-car of choice is that benchmark of driving agility, the M3 Coupe. But with this current version having debuted in 2008, it’s not as fresh and frisky as it once was. Dynamic, responsive, nimble, powerful-yes, all of the above. But 14 mpg city and a $1,300 Federal Gas Guzzler Tax no longer fits into BMW’s ecoethos. And when BMW has to resort to offering Lime Rock Park Editions ($70,995 and 200 copies) to keep sales moving, that fifth-generation model can’t drift (sideways, naturally) on to the horizon fast enough.

ALPINA B7 BI-TURBO Incorporating the upgrades BMW made to its 2013 7-Series flagship, Alpina has rushed a new third-generation B7 into the line-up. In its inimitable way, Alpina has taken the Seven’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8, added its pixie dust and upped the horsepower to 540-that’s 40 more than the 2012 version. Max torque also spirals skywards by 22

“When I was 14 years old, I watched James Bond fly a jetpack in the movie “Thunderball”, and have dreamed of flying one ever since. However, after decades of patient waiting, jetpack technology didn’t get any closer to mainstreaming personal flight…so I decided to invent a machine that would.” - Raymond Li, Master Engineer and Inventor of the JETLEV R200 48

2013 Exotic Car Buyers Guide

www.duPontREGISTRY.com

We were told to expect jet packs and rocket belts...empty promises from the World’s Fair. Now everything’s changed...Today you can fly. Raymond Li first sketched out the JETLEV concept on a yellow Postit Note in 2000. After seeing his masterpiece on paper for the first time, Raymond unceremoniously retreated, filing it under I for Impossible by burying it in the trash. The sketch was long gone, however, Raymond couldn’t shake his vision...he couldn’t shake his passion. Soon, he began conducting extensive research, concept development and testing on the first ever, water-propelled jetpack. By August 2008, Raymond built his first, fully operational JETLEV prototype. A few months later, video clips from these test flights leaked online and immediately went viral. Seemed the world was ready for Raymond and his groundbreaking contraption.

Your flight begins as a 200-Horsepower marine engine pumps water up a 33 foot hose at over 1,000 gallons-per-minute, generating over 420 pounds of thrust. When the water reaches the ultra-light backpack, it’s directed through two nozzles at up to 60 PSI. Aiming the nozzles creates smooth, stable turns. And the motorcycle-style throttle lets you climb, dive and hover up to 30 feet above the surface. The 5-point safety harness and trapeze keep you in optimal flying position, while the fuel-efficient motor gives you hours of flight on a single tank of high-octane gasoline. The JETLEV R200 is safe, surprisingly quiet and easy to use. Because the JETLEV R200 is operated exclusively over water, learning to fly is exciting, easy and fun. And with JETLEV’s simple mechanics and smooth flight dynamics, virtually anybody, aged 18-80, can experience the thrill of personal flight. Priced at $99,500 USD, the JETLEV R200 package comes complete with everything you need to fly, including lessons and Pilot Certification.

PERFORMANCE: • Top Speed – 30 MPH • Flight Ceiling – 30 Feet • Fuel Capacity – 22 Gallons • Flight Duration (on a single tank) – 3-5 Hours • Range (on a single tank) – 65 Miles

BMW M6 COUPE/CONVERTIBLE

A

Take a look at this new M6. First impressions? Big car, and looks it—193 inches from its kidney pout to chunky tush. Looks heavy too. As it is. 4,500 pounds to be precise. Which means it’s probably going to drive heavy. So a nice relaxed cruiser. But no hard-driving bruiser. How wrong first impressions can be. Here is one of the most thrilling, most agile, most responsive, most fun cars to hit showrooms this year. A car that’s essentially a two-door version of BMW’s hallowed M5, yet one that steers better, brakes harder and feels less demanding to drive fast. And compared to the last-generation M6 with its howling V-10 engine and seemingly incredible bulk, this all-new version which adopts most of the M5’s greasy bits, is as different as night and day. Pop the hood and there in all its glory is BMW’s magical 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8. To fully describe its technical advancements requires a service manual longer than War & Peace. All you need to know is that, just like with the M5, it cranks out a towering 560 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a newly-developed seven-speed double-clutch automatic and overly-complex launch control set-up, the M6 can blast from standstill to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds, hit the 100 mark in 9.2 and run to an easy 155 before the computer calls game over. Through the twisties the car seems to shrink in size, darting through curves as if running on rails. Select ‘Sport Plus’ and the Servotronic speed-sensitive steering gains just the right heft and precision to telegraph back everything that’s going on at the front. 50

How else can it be that a 5,300-pound mud-plugger can scorch from zero-to-60 mph in an insane four seconds flat, and treat 150 mph like other sport-utes treat 50? We can’t emphasize enough about the X5/X6 M’s twin turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 powerhouse which, more important than its horsepower output, can unleash 500 lb-ft of twist from as low as 1,500 rpm. Yes, its six-speed auto is looking a little past its sell-by date when Porsche’s Turbo Cayenne comes with eight gears and Merc’s new ML63 offers seven. BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT SPEED

he recently announced GT Speed is the latest edition to grace Bentley’s new Continental series, which was newly unveiled for the 2012 model year. Like its predecessor, the Speed does its part to live up to its name. The max velocity for the big coupe is a staggering 205 mph, making it the fastest production Bentley ever. A big luxury coupe weighing more than two-and-a-half tons needs a little help achieving those kinds of speeds, so the crew at Crewe has tuned the 6.0-liter twinturbo W-12 engine up to 616 hp and 590

T

lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive and a new 8-speed automatic transmission help dispatch 60 mph in just 4 seconds, making mincemeat of most Corvettes and 911s along the way in laid back, four-seater comfort. Inside, buyers can expect typical Bentley luxury. The pared-back feel of the previous Continental Supersports is conspicuously absent here, leading us to believe a new version of that car will soon be coming down the pipeline. hoices in the 200-mph four-door club are somewhat limited. This could be due to the fact that back seat passengers aren’t quite as comfortable with the prospect of hitting the double-century mark as the driver is; or it could be simply that few manufacturers think they can beat Bentley at their own game. Whatever the reason, for ultra-rapid, ultraluxury transport, the Flying Spur Speed really stands in a class of its own. Born from the success of the previousgeneration Continental GT, the Flying Spur has always slipped under the radar better

than its two-door brother. That’s probably because its substantial size isn’t quite as noticeable when spread over a four-door body. Even weighing 5,377 pounds, the GT Speed’s 600 hp and 553 lb-ft enable this sedan to rocket to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. n these tough economic times, not even Bentley is immune from the downsizing trend. In their case, the company decided to equip its Continental coupe with a V-8 for the first time last year, previously only offering a W-12. As befitting a Bentley, the new engine is a peach, a 4.0liter unit with twin-turbochargers that pumps out 500 hp and nearly as much torque (487 lb-ft). The V-8 even features cylinder deactivation technology, meaning while cruising or under light-load conditions, the V-8 can temporarily act as a 4 cylinder to save fuel. With

its various efficiency measures, the V-8 helps return 40 percent better economy figures than its W-12 sister. Other than the smaller output engine, there’s little visual distinction between 8- and 12-cylinder Continental GTs. The V-8 receives red, winged “B” emblems front and rear, a nod to Bentley’s historic “red label” cars of the 1920s. Radiator and bumper grilles are gloss black rather than chrome, and minor trim differences round out the changes. The biggest difference will be a price savings of almost $20,000 over the 12cylinder model.

t’s hard to think “sporty” when a luxury sedan stretches a little over 18 feet long, strains the pavement to the tune of 5,700 pounds, and has a leatherlined iPod drawer. When Bentley set out to build its range-topping four-door, “sporty” was a goal they set: they even gave the car a name that wouldn’t let them forget Bentley’s racing heritage. The Mulsanne was named after the famous LeMans straight away. A thoroughly overhauled and modernized 6.75-liter V-8 engine delivers 505 hp and an astounding 752 lb-ft of torque. Mated to an

One can even specify the world’s most powerful production in-car stereo amplifier, a Naim unit with 2,200 watts running 20 speakers. In short, the only limitation is the owner’s imagination.

BENTLEY EXP 9F CONCEPT

entley’s EXP 9 F uber-luxury SUV was unveiled to the masses at the Geneva auto show last March and has since been a hot topic in the automotive world. Emotions are mixed on this SUV, but one thing is for sure: Bentley is not going to give up on the EXP 9 F. Since its debut, Bentley has already begun reworking some of the features that made some heads tilt in confusion. Bentley is known for their subtle style and elegance and the EXP 9F’s striking features is throwing car afficiandos for a loop. However, maybe it is time Bentley breaks out of their shell and pushed their styling boundaries. But make no mistake, a tall-riding, supremely-powerful Bentley SUV is in the cards and something very close to the EXP 9F will likely emerge as the third model line alongside the Continental and Mulsanne. And in case you’re wondering what that strange alphabet soup of letters and numbers means, EXP is short for ‘Experimental,’ the ‘9’ signifies this as Bentley’s only ninth concept in its history, while the ‘F’—and this is weird—stands for Falcon as it’s the fastest-moving creature on earth. Powering the EXP 9 F is the same 6.0liter twin-turbo W-12 found in the Continental, coupled with an eight-speed automatic and an all-wheel drive set up probably borrowed from the Cayenne. To attain

B

a status as the world’s fastest SUV, Bentley talks of upping the grunt to a mighty 600-plus horsepower and more than 600 lb-ft of torque. But chances are that a production EXP would come with a more eco-friendly V-8 with hybrid-electric propulsion—as if a 5,500pound, leather-laden, $250,000 soft-roader could ever be described as eco-friendly. Where the Bentley concept excels in is truly magnificent interior, which looks like a showcase for Bentley olde worlde craftsmanship. The quilted leather on the seats that mimics the padded shoulders of a hunting jacket, the leather-trimmed split-tailgate, the integrated picnic basket are pure Bentley. Expect to see a revised version of the EXP 9F in the near future.

BUGATTI 16.4 GRAND SPORT VITESSE

A

blast from zero to 60 in 2.6 seconds is guaranteed to have anyone grinning from ear to ear. A max speed run at 255mph would get the heart pounding like a jack-hammer. Drop the Veyron’s top, and at 255mph you’d have nothing left to worry about. But time is running out. Rumor has it that this 2013 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse is the grand finale of the car that changed how we define performance cars when it debuted back in 2003. Supposedly, the last of the 300-car production are ready to be built. Hurry before they’re gone. They definitely saved the best till last. This Grand Sport Vitesse - Vitesse is French for ‘speed’ - combines the manic 1,200 hp of last year’s speed recordbreaking Super Sport coupe with the targa-topped Grand Sport. Thankfully, the folks at Bugatti resisted the temptation of badging it Veyron Grand Sport Super Sport, or VGSSS for short. What you have here is quite simply the world’s fastest production convertible. Power comes from essentially the same 8.0-liter, 16-cylinder nuclear reactor that motivated the original Veyron, but now rwith a quartet of enlarged turbos and even more cooling. The result is a power hike from a crazed 987 hp to an absolutely insane 1,183 hp - that’s an extra 196 hp. Max torque takes a similar leap; from 922 lb-ft to 1,106 lb-ft. This is the motor that punched a Veyron Super Sport to a record top speed of 267.81 mph at Volkswagen’s test track last year. Bugatti rightly tames the Vitesse’s top speed of 255 mph, though with the top off and the car’s aerodynamics gone to pot, you won’t go much faster than 233 mph. Yet at 200 mph-plus, the Bugatti is surprisingly, no amazingly, refined. A part of that $2.3-million goes to the hundreds of hours of wind tunnel testing that helped create seemingly small but extremely effective features like the clip-on aero lip that attaches to the top of the windshield. It makes conversation actually possible at 200 mph-plus. Though we’re not sure what kind of conversation a driver should be engaging in when the world is screaming past at 293 feet every second. Yes, there is a carbon fiber hardtop, but if you remove it, you have to leave it at home as there’s no place for it inside the car. Just as in 2003, there is still no car that compares to a magical Veyron. It’s a car everyone should be given the opportunity to drive just once in their life. For the feel-good factor. 60

he CTS-V family soldiers on into the 2013 model year with few changes, adding 2-piece front brake rotors and a new paint choice: Glacier Blue Metallic. Not that there was much wrong with the CTS-V in the first place: it’s an outstandingly brash alternative to its German competitors. Although its price puts it in close competition with performance sedans a size down like the BMW M3, the weight and weaponsgrade performance offered in the V put it on par with the M3’s big brother, the M5. They’ll keep you from getting thrown out the window during hard cornering, although the rest of the car is up to the task of doing just that. Cadillac pioneered the magnetorheological shock technology used by the CTS-V, to give it a ride and handling mix that hardly ever feels compromised. ny car nut worth their salt has probably heard enough Camaro ZL1 vs. Mustang GT500 smack talk thrown around in recent months to make their heads explode. The ZL1 was Chevy’s firebreathing answer to the 2012 Mustang GT500. The 2013 GT500 they turned out in response trumps the ZL1 in just about every measurable category save one: composure. Built on GM’s modern rear-wheel drive Zeta platform, the Camaro has something most Mustangs dream about but rarely ever receive: independent rear suspension. When channeling 580 hp and 556 lb-ft of torque through just two tire contact patches, it helps to have as much stability and control as you can to keep things on the up and up. ince 1953, Corvette has been the showcase for American engineering and styling. It is time to raise the bar for the rest of the world. Development of the C7 may have been prolonged due to the bailout, but the strongest steel is forged in the hottest fire. There will be many enhancements, some long overdue. Direct Injection has trickled down from exotics into daily drivers and even the V6 Camaro. The Chevy small block V-8 doesn’t need more power or efficiency, but what’s the harm right? Corvette Racing ran this on their GT2 cars back in ‘09, but other

competitors petitioned to have it removed (the car was too fast). The new GenV engines will be smaller displacement, get better MPG, and burn cleaner than current models. Get ready for carbon fiber to replace fiberglass means a lighter body. A lighter body allows for softer springs producing a more comfortable ride. As with each new generation, the styling will be polarizing. First seen on enthusiast website Jalopnik, these renderings from Trinity Animation are very close to the final design. C7 will be a leaner, sleeker, more powerful, and altogether better car.

CHEVROLET CORVETTE 427

T

he Corvette 427 is the answer for anyone who ever thought about the Z06, “if they only made it in a convertible.” Combining the best elements of the Corvette-range-topping Z06 and ZR1 models and fusing them with the convertible body, the 427 should be a likely candidate for future Barrett-Jackson bidding wars. Built as a birthday present to itself, the 427 commemorates the 60th year of the Corvette, as well as the final year of the current generation C6 before the C7 bows next year. While all eyes are on that car, the current 427 isn’t a bad consolation prize. With carbon fiber fenders, floors and hood, as well as the Z06’s LS7 engine, driveline and rear axle, it could well be the meanest Corvette convertible yet. The 427’s lightweight wheels and Michelin PS2 tires are shared with the 631 hp ZR1, as is the full-width rear spoiler. Chevy is proud to tout that the various weight saving measures have put the 427’s power-to-weight ratio in rarefied convertible air above the likes of the Ferrari California and Audi R8 Spyder. While the Corvette might not have the cache of those drop-top rivals, the 427 now has the speed and rarity to match. The C6 has enjoyed a good run. With the LS7 propelling the C6R team to prominence in the GT1 class, it’s only fitting that Chevy gives it and the car a proper send off. In the next few months we will wait with baited breath as the Corvette plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky is re-tooled and employees are trained to build the seventh generation American supercar. 64

SRT VIPER COUPE

T

he Snake is back. With a vengeance. New body, new lighter-weight materials, stiffer chassis and even more raw power and performance from a redesigned version of that Louisville Slugger 8.4-liter V-10. How much more? We’re talking a mighty 640 hp—up 40—and massive 600 lb-ft of twist, which is the most torque of any naturally aspirated sports car motor on the planet. Pedal to the metal the folks at Chrysler’s Street and Racing Technology—SRT—reckon it should run zero-to-60 in under 3.5 seconds, pass the 100 mph mark in 7.5, spear through the quarter-mile in 11.4 and not quit till the needle is kissing the 206 mph mark. This is the new-from-the rubber-up 2013 SRT Viper. Yes, it’s still as bad to the bone as the last-generation version that quietly slipped out of production in the summer of 2010. But this latest snake joins the modern world with new technologies, like electronic stability control, traction control, even launch control. But perhaps the most amazing aspect of this new Viper is

66

2013 Exotic Car Buyers Guide

www.duPontREGISTRY.com

that it even exists at all. When Chrysler was in the depths of doom, gloom and bankruptcy, the last thing on anyone’s mind was developing an updated Viper. That didn’t stop Team SRT which quietly and secretly developed this new version which debuted at the 2012 New York auto show and goes on sale this fall in two versions—SRT Viper and more upscale SRT Viper GTS. This will sticker between an estimated $100,000 and $120,000. So SRT Viper it is. This fifth-generation Viper has the slithering, reptilian essence of the original. Every body panel is new—only the windshield is carried over. And in a bid to shed pounds, raise quality and improve aerodynamics, the hood, double-bubble roof and rear deck are made of carbon fiber while the new doors switch from Tupperware to aluminum. The result? A whopping 140 pounds lost, taking overall weight down to around 3,350 pounds. Vipers have always been a blast to drive in a scary, white-knuckle, fear-for-your-life kind of way. But for this new version SRT decided to take out a little of the fear-factor by adding new safety features like: electronic multi-stage stability control, traction control and new, four-channel anti-lock braking. They also stiffened the chassis by an impressive 50 percent to sharpen handling, while the Michelins have been jettisoned in favor of more gripping Pirelli P Zeros. And finally, the Viper gets the interior that is has always deserved. Everything is now wrapped in leather, including the new thin-shell seats that come from the same supplier as Ferrari. Also, there is much more headroom and legroom in the cabin. All we can say to Chrysler and its Italian masters is “Fangs a lot.” www.duPontREGISTRY.com

FERRARI 458 ITALIA/ 458 SPIDER

T

he 458 Italia burst onto the sports car scene in 2009 and promptly made every other mid-engined Ferrari that came before it seem obsolete. Courtesy of a 4.5-liter V-8 producing 562 hp at a screaming 9,000 rpm, and a lightning-quick 7-speed dual clutch F1 gearbox doesn’t respond to your requests as much as predict them with unflinching accuracy. A futuristic supercar body made the previously sexy F430 suddenly look like an overturned bathtub. The 458 moved the chains in the performance car game perilously close to the end zone. As a follow-up to that success, Ferrari introduced the open-top variation of the 458 last year, the Spider. A production car first, it combines a mid-mounted V-8 with a fully retractable hardtop, as well as the tantalizing powertrain and chassis features of the Italia coupe. Lighter than an equivalent soft top by more than 50 pounds and swinging from place to rest in just 14 seconds, the Spider minimizes occupants’ time to tanning. The tailored engine mapping, exhaust sound tuning and suspension damping better suit the roadster’s weight and character. True performance seekers will gravitate toward the Italia coupe, at least until an expected Scuderia or equivalently honed 458 model bows in the next few years. They’ll be rewarded with 0-60 blasts in the low 3-second range and a top speed north of 202 mph, 4 mph greater than what the Spider will allow. Lessons learned through racing resulted in adoption of advanced aerodynamic measures, including active nose winglets that allow proportionally greater downforce as speed rises by restricting flow to the radiators, a flat underbody floor with ducts for engine cooling, and keel-shaped side sills that act as fairings to the rear wheels. If that’s all a bit too techy for you, understand that these meas70

FERRARI CALIFORNIA 30

elieve it or not, the California is actually Ferrari’s first car to have a V-8 engine mounted in the front rather than amidships in the company’s entire 65-year history. And with the California’s success on that market, Ferrari has decided to up the ante with the California 30. What does the 30 stand for? It stands for a 30 kilogram weight reduction and 30 hp increase. This adjustment lets the California 30 benefit from a more

FERRARI F12 BERLINETTA

2013 Car of the Year

T

he new F12 berlinetta replaces the 599 as Ferrari’s front-engined V-12 supercar, a 2-seater that brings the grand touring concept to new levels of aggression. A few key descriptors accompany the release of the F12—namely “fastest” and “most.” The car’s 730 hp is the most found under the hood of a production Ferrari. That’s more than the previous Enzo supercar by a resounding 79 hp. A focus on weight reduction has seen extensive use of aluminum in the car’s chassis, enough to reduce dry weight by over 150 pounds to just 3,362. We expect roadready curb weights to remain under 3,600 pounds, giving the car a powerto-weight ratio of less than 5 pounds per horsepower. To put it in perspective, that’s a better power-to-weight ratio than the legendary F40, which was little more than a cleverly disguised F1 car. Technology and luxury are two qualities that help define Ferrari’s front-engined road cars, and Ferrari hasn’t forgotten about its customer base who wants to be comfortable while they achieve felonious speeds. The cockpit coddles with swathes of carbon fiber, aluminum and tailored Frau leather throughout the cabin. Electronic controls abound with the F1-style Manettino switch on the steering wheel that controls fully integrated E-Diff, ESP Premium, F1 Trac and high-performance ABS systems simultaneously. With Ferrari’s experience in Formula 1 now paying dividends to its road car business, the F12 benefits extensively from aerodynamic tricks learned on the racetrack. Drag has been reduced to just .29 cD, while at the same time downforce has been upped by 76 percent to 270 lbs at 124 mph. These two areas of aero balance are typically at odds with each other, so the fact that Ferrari has been able to maximize both so effectively is testament to their success in racing. 74

FERRARI FF

F

errari’s current lineup is littered with superlatives like “first,” “most,” or “fastest.” The 458 Spider for example, is the world’s first mid-engined sports car with a power retractable hardtop. The F12 Berlinetta: the most powerful and fastest Ferrari ever. The California is Ferrari’s first front-engined V-8 car. And, as perhaps the company’s most obvious departure from the norm, the FF is the first 4seater, 4-wheel drive car Ferrari has ever made. And a 4-wheel drive hatchback at that. To ensure they created a 4-wheel drive car that still handles with the accuracy Ferrari drivers are accustomed to, an entirely new system was developed. A separate gearbox (in addition to the 7-speed dual clutch unit mounted at the rear of the car) is in front of the V-12 engine and delegates up to 20 percent of available engine torque to the front wheels in low-grip conditions. Except in very low grip conditions, torque is transferred solely to the rear wheels, so handling and steering feel are more akin to a well-sorted rear-wheel drive chassis than an understeering 4-wheel drive. The front wheels can only be called into action in fourth gear or lower, as Ferrari says the torque delivered in fifth gear or higher can be handled by the meaty 295/35ZR20 rear tires. Most of the time, owners will be unaware of the power struggle going on underneath them at any given time. Instead, they’ll be focused on the torrent of acceleration provided by the FF’s 651 hp and 504 lbft of torque, enough to reach 62 mph in 3.7 seconds and continue on to a 208 mph top speed. Meanwhile, a spacious interior, courtesy of the cropped wagon-esque tail, seats four in comfort. Buyers can even specify a rear-seat entertainment package with dual video screens, and www.duPontREGISTRY.com

a 1,280-watt QuantumLogic surround sound system. With the two back seats up, 15.8 cubic feet of storage capacity can be had, and with both folded that nearly doubles to 28.2 cubic feet. That puts it on par with many family sedans, let alone a 208 mph Ferrari. That sounds like a first if there ever was one. FERRARI CHALLENGE

I

f you thought the 599xx was amazing, the 458 Challenge introduces a number of important modifications to adapt it for competition use. The direct injection 4497 cc V-8 remains strictly in production tune, with an output of 570 hp at 9,000 rpm. That said, modifications have been made to the gear ratios and calibration of its dual-clutch F1 gearbox to guarantee higher torque at lower revs. The 458 Challenge is also equipped with the E-Diff electronic differential already employed on the road-going version, a first for Ferrari’s track-only cars. As with previous challenge cars, weight reduction is the cornerstone. Body panels are much thinner, with carbon fiber playing an even more critical role. Lexan trumps glass at all corners for a safer & lighter experience. The 458 Challenge also has a specific suspension set-up with solid aluminum bushings, stiffer springs, single-rate dampers, center-nut 19-inch koioik wheels, larger Pirelli slicks and it has been lowered by 30mm all around. For breathtaking stops, giant Brembo CCM2 brakes (which debuted on the 599XX), are integrated with a dual mode ABS system. Another first for a Ferrari Challenge model is the adoption of the F1-Trac traction control system, the most sophisticated of its kind. Developed in-house by Ferrari, the F1-Trac system constantly monitors levels of grip for maximum high performance road-holding. Two specific track-biased calibrations—wet and dry—have been developed for this application, with control logic and strategies derived 76

from Ferrari’s extensive racing experience in the F1 and GT championships. The F1-Trac is completely integrated with the E-Diff to guarantee maximum acceleration out of corners. With the new 458 Challenge, Ferrari is offering its sportier clients —professional and gentlemen drivers alike—a car that is extremely responsive, with great performance and superb handling. This midrear V-8-engined berlinetta will allow Ferrari Challenge participants to enjoy to the fullest, the exhilarating cut and thrust of the race weekends on the world’s leading circuits, as well as the passion that has always been an integral part of Ferrari’s one-make championship.

HENNESSEY VENOM GT SPYDER

N

ormally when a 64-year-old male drops $1.1 million on an outrageously-quick supercar, your first thought is usually d-i-v-o-r-c-e, or mid-life crisis. Or both. When that 64-yearold is Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler, you think ‘That’s cool’. Tyler drove off into the Malibu sunset in the very first Hennessey Venom GT Spyder, a new targa-topped version of Texas-based Hennessey Performance Engineering’s insanely fast, obscenely-powerful 1,200 hp Venom GT hypercar. It was the allblack two-seater that had been advertised in duPont REGISTRY™ earlier this year. Chopping the top off the Venom GT sounds like an easy task. After all, the tiny-tot Lotus Elise on which the Venom is based, is offered with a lift-off targa roof panel. Only trouble is, the Venom has an integrated roll cage that could have been made from leftovers of the space shuttle. Reconstructing the cage, plus the weight of the top, added around 30 pounds to the Venom’s supermodel waistline—and $150k to the sticker. Of course, that extra poundage just didn’t sit well with Hennessey boss, the affable John Hennessey. His mantra for the Venom is “one horsepower for every kilo of weight.” As the new Spyder tipped the scales at 1,244 kg—or 2,743 pounds—power had to be upped from the stock 1,200 hp to 1,244. For a man who earns his living extracting mega horsepower

82

2013 Exotic Car Buyers Guide

from Motown V-8s, it was simply a matter of tweaking the twin-turbo 7.0-liter LS-series Corvette V-8 that powers the Venom. And with an extra 244 hp coursing through the Ricardo six-speed manual transaxle to the rear wheels, it makes sense that this new Venom Spyder should be even quicker than the coupe. That hardly seems possible, or realistic, considering the coupe is already good for zero-to-60 sprinting in under 2.7 seconds and a top speed—still estimated—of a Veyron-whacking 275 mph. Yet those massive 345/30-20 Michelin Pilot Super Sports can surely lay down only so much power before breaking loose.

But John Hennessey has a habit of delivering on his promises, and it’ll be fascinating to see what happens when someone straps timing gear to the rump of the Spyder and drops the clutch. Hennessey plans to build just five Venom GTs for the 2013 model year, three of which will likely be Spyders. And lucky buyers don’t have to opt for the 1,244 hp monster; like the coupe, there’s also a choice of ‘mere’ 800- or 1,000-hp versions. While the Venom may look like a stretched Lotus, it’s much, much more. It features an all-new frame, suspension and aerodynamic allcarbon body. It’s also nearly three feet longer than the Elise, almost six inches wider with a wheelbase stretched nearly 20 inches to accommodate that Chevy V-8. What is carried over is the windshield, doors, floor, dash and trim pieces, plus the entire Lotus cockpit structure which had already been certified and tested. If there’s a criticism, it’s that the Lotus Elise cabin seems a little basic in a car costing over a million bucks. Not that it stopped Steven Tyler. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

ICON BRONCO

2013 Best SUV

he one that started a revolution. In 1966, Ford created the American SUV. A vehicle capable of tackling any terrain and also taking the kids to school. Because of the rough life most originals have led, and the usual attrition as with any vintage vehicle, pristine originals are very difficult to find. If you are fortunate to find one, most are quick to note that they are a bit archaic to drive in the modern world (Enter the reality check of our rose tinted glasses of memory). But now there is the ICON BR. Their master fabricators scour the country to find salvageable originals. Then ICON reengineers and evolves the original design, with respect for the utilitarian roots, yet with the intent of providing a far more comfortable, powerful and reliable ride. The chassis suspension is reengineered to coilover-shock architecture, running Eibach coils and Fox Racing Shocks. Legendary Art Morrison fabricates the chassis from thick wall 2- x 5inch steel (0.180 inch), supporting Dynatrac Dana 44/60 axles with four wheel disc brakes. ICON CNC's and redesigns almost every trim element on the vehicle in stainless steel and aluminum. All body panels are removed, repaired, and polyurea coated for corrosion resistance. The floors and interior panels are extensively coated with Dynamat sound deadening insulation. The squeaks, rattles, and road noise of a 60’s era truck have been replaced with a refined and bespoke interior with Chilewich textiles and modern seating. Underneath, the fit and finish quality is just as nice as the top side. For power, ICON sources the new Mustang GT fuel injected "Coyote" V-8 (as found in the 2013 Ford Mustang GT) direct from Ford, then backs it up with your choice of manual or automatic transmission 84

From winches to Bluetooth, your ICON BR will be well equipped. ICON is well known for their almost maniacal eye on quality and details, plus everything is made in America. ANNOUNCING A NEW AMERICAN ALTERNATIVE ASSET CLASS “Collectable Classic Cars” Uncorrelated with traditional asset classes

DRIVE YOUR IRA OR 401K

t has been stated that in the last fifteen to eighteen years, there has been no better investment instrument than “blue chip” classic cars. As such, investing in classic cars has become increasingly popular, with large increases in value at both the top and bottom of the price.

pounds over the next seven years and is looking to acquire cars such as the Ferrari 250 GTO, the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato, and the Shelby Daytona. Now, the first US-based classic car fund of its kind, the Family Classic Car Fund I, L.P., is targeting $120 million and will be going to market in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Classic car returns have vastly outperformed the S&P 500 over the past 3 decades. Overall performance still outpaces the stock market and many traditional asset classes overall. Jerry Hirsch reports that “the value of collectible cars has surged 33% since the depth of the recession in 2009.”

Collectors who are tired of squeamishly opening their IRA or 401k statements now have the opportunity to direct investment funds toward the acquisition of their dream investment. Instead of looking at the unpredictable financial results on their statements, they can now go to their garage, polish their appreciating asset, and take it for a ride. Investors who may not be ready to make the purchase of a collectable automobile can simply invest in a classic car fund and own a piece of some of the most desirable and coveted collectible cars.

As of 2011, two European investment funds have been set up specifically for people investing in classic cars. The Classic Car Fund has been floated on the German Stock Exchange and is targeting assets of 350 million euros over the next five years. Another, the IGA Automobile Fund, is targeting 150 million

JAGUAR XF-R

F chief designer Ian Callum threw out the stuffy Jaguar sedan rulebook when he penned the XF back in 2007. When it arrived in the U.S. market the following year, few other mid-sized executive sedans could match its combination of handsome design and innovative interior. Four model years later, the 2012 XF got a few styling and equipment updates which are carried over into the 2013 model year. KOENIGSEGG AGERA R

A

The Agera R is capable of 273 mph. Let that figure sink in for a moment. To put it in perspective, imagine the highway speeds you might travel at on your commute to work each morning (if you’re lucky enough not to be in gridlock) and then add two hundred miles per hour. Maybe your morning commute involves jet travel takeoff speed for a Boeing 737 is a mere 150 mph and it usually takes around 25 seconds to get there. In that amount of time, the Agera R will go from zero to 200 mph and brake back to a stop again. Just in time to watch your 737 finally lift off. When Christian von Koenigsegg, the hypercar company’s eponymous 42-year-old founder, set out to create the Agera R, his point was not to build a rolling list of superlatives. Instead, the resulting machine is a genuine sports car, composed of an ultra-lightweight carbon-fiber and aluminum honeycomb typically reserved for fighter jets and Formula 1 cars. Channeling more horsepower than a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 through just the rear wheels, and with 800 fewer pounds to haul around, the resulting car’s performance is eye-opening to say the least. The leap to 60 mph is more an exercise in traction control than of engine performance, and it still arrives in a fleet 2.8 seconds. It’s at this point that the Agera R really begins building speed: 124 mph arrives in just 7.5 seconds, 188 mph (the magic 300 km/h mark) arrives in 14.5 seconds, and 200 mph is just a further 3 seconds away. It doesn’t even matter that owners won’t be able to find a place to test their car’s theoretical 273 mph top speed. At the Koenigsegg’s price point, exclusivity and bragging rights are the www.duPontREGISTRY.com

main draws. The Agera R is likely to make the Veyron look as commonplace as a VW Golf owing to its microscopic production numbers–only 100 cars with the Koenigsegg badge have rolled out in the 10 years since the company’s formation. Three times that amount were produced during the Veyron’s production run. Trying to find an instrumented road test of the Koenigsegg Agera R is a more difficult task, despite the fact they’ve been in production for more than a year. That’s the kind of exclusivity money doesn’t always buy, but in the Agera R’s case, it does.

LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR

B

uilt as a successor to the Murcielago, which reigned as Lamborghini’s V-12 supercar for nearly ten years, the Aventador inherits its crown from other Lambo greats such as the Diablo, Countach, and original Miura. To ensure the car they built measured up to an established legacy for balancing beauty with over-the-top boldness and performance, the engineers at Lamborghini devoted thousands of hours to the new-from-theground-up Aventador’s development. Starting with a full carbon-fiber monocoque chassis with front and rear aluminum subframes, a brand new all-aluminum 6.5-liter V-12 was installed amidships and bolted to a single-clutch automated manual gearbox. While shifts from the ISR transmission might lack the smoothness of the now-ubiquitous dual clutch units, it makes up for it with a full bore shift quality that will leave drivers breathless. It can even play the docile card around town. Built with compactness in mind, the new V-12 engine is smaller and lighter than in the Murcielago. Combined with a dry sump oiling system, the engine now sits 2.3 inches closer to the pavement, naturally improving handling and turn-in response. Even more important than packaging is output, and the new engine doesn’t disappoint: a full 700 hp is on tap at 8,250 rpm, with 507 lb-ft of torque at 5,500 rpm. Optimized intake and exhaust systems and a finely tuned ECU allow the 11.8:1 compression ratio, impressive without the use of direct fuel injection. Named as they usually are after famous Spanish bullfighting legends (the cattle, not the matadors), Lamborghini’s V-12 supercars www.duPontREGISTRY.com

have adopted a similar legacy of being tough to predict and occasionally making you fear for your life. While the new Aventador boasts perhaps the most fearsome stats of the company’s entire automotive history, the way it dispatches a stretch of racetrack bears little resemblance to the difficult to master and sometimes bloodthirsty toros that have previously bore the Lamborghini badge. That’s good news for drivers, although somewhat indifferent news for the Lambo legend—the brand has often traded on its “bad boy” reputation as a stark contrast to the way things are done over in Maranello. As long as it keeps churning out seductively wedgy shapes like the Aventador, though, its cars are in little danger of being confused with other Italian sports cars. LIST PRICE $379,700 ENGINE 6.5-liter V-12 HORSEPOWER 700 hp @ 8,250 rpm TORQUE 507 lb-ft @ 5,500 rpm TRANSMISSION 7-speed automated manual 0–62 2.9 seconds TOP SPEED 217 mph

LAMBORGHINI GALLARDO

T

he crew at Sant’Agata Bolognese is hard at work on the next Gallardo model, so don’t expect too many changes on the 2013 Gallardo. That’s no bad thing, of course: the current Gallardo is still a fantastic sports car. Whether you choose the standard LP560-4 coupe or spyder, or the more sporting LP5704 Superleggera coupe or Performante Spyder, you’ll be getting a 550-plus horsepower, all-wheel drive, midengined thoroughbred Italian bull capable of sprinting to 60 mph in well under 4 seconds and a top speed of over 200 mph. The LP570-4 Superleggera in particular boasts some incredible figures. Thanks to a liberal application of carbon fiber, weight is down by 150 pounds compared to the standard car, bringing the dry weight down to just 2,950 pounds. More ponies have been liberated from the 5.2-liter V-10, and a 6-speed E-gear automated manual transmission is standard, meaning the Superleggera boasts a power to weight ratio of just 5.9 pounds per horsepower fully loaded. This number puts it in serious supercar territory. Combined with a wedgy, extroverted design and an Alcantara-trimmed interior, the Superleggera or its spyder clone, the Performante, are the most desirable bulls in the current Gallardo family. LAMBORGHINI URUS CONCEPT 2013 Best Concept

A

Lamborghini SUV makes sense. Especially one with 600 hp, rear-biased all-wheel drive, head-twisting sports-coupe styling and trash can lid-sized 23-inch rims. Which is why the Italian bull-worker has been testing the waters with its stunning, swoopy-roofed Urus concept cross-over. Fact is, Lamborghini can’t grow just by cranking out low-slung, high-horsepower supercars, no matter how gorgeous we think the Aventador and Gallardo are. These are big-boy toys with a demand that ebbs and flows with the economy. Now an SUV, that’s a real car. A daily driver. A car for the Chinese captain of industry to be chauffeured in. The Dubai oil baron to go play with falcons in. Demand could possibly be as high as 3,000 a year. Just look at Range Rover. Or Porsche with the Cayenne Turbo. Heck, Bentley’s even thinking of getting in on the act. And there’s history here. Back in ‘85, Lamborghini gave the world, and the Italian army, the LM002, a Hummer H1 on steroids, powered by a 444 hp Countach V-12. Ahead of its time, it faded before the sport-ute boom of the crazy ‘90s. Looking for all the world like an over-sized Range Rover Evoque, the Urus is all origami creases, big blistered wheel arches and front air intakes and slatted grilles that wouldn’t look out of place on a skyscraper HVAC unit. Don’t bother asking what’s under the hood, because chances are it’s irrelevant as right now Lamborghini doesn’t have a powerplant that can (a) fit under the Urus’ door-wedge hood line—a Gallardo V-10 might just at a squeeze—or (b) provide the kind of fuel economy, 92

2013 Exotic Car Buyers Guide

sustainability and emissions to meet upcoming government standards. But as Lamborghini is part of the ever-burgeoning VW Group, there’s a lot that Audi/VW/Bentley/Porsche/Bugatti are working on that might provide a future solution. And that naturally includes hybrid-electrics. Don’t get attached to that broad-shouldered body styling either. Even if the Urus got a production green light this year, a production version would be unlikely to arrive before 2017. Car design will have moved on dramatically by them. Let’s hope the same applies to that oddball name. In true Lamborghini tradition, it has bull connotations—Urus was the wild ancestor to the modern domesticated cow. But being an SUV, and a Lamborghini one at that, we’re just disappointed the concept didn’t come with a set of sturdy ‘bull’ bars.

LEXUS LF-LC

fficially, you can’t buy the stunner gracing these pages at any price. That’s because Lexus has said it isn’t ready to produce the 4-seater LF-LC hybrid coupe it unveiled at the Detroit auto show last January. Pity, since it gets the heart racing like few Lexus designs have before, blocky LF-A supercar included. The LF-LC serves to foreshadow the future design direction at Lexus, emphasizing dynamic angles outside and a stronger focus on the driver inside. Some of the LF-LC’s design language can already be seen in showrooms—take a

look at the trapezoidal front end of the new GS sedan. A full glass roof lets plenty of light shine on the driver-centric cockpit, which features a heavy mix of organic influence and digital technology. We hope Lexus changes its mind about producing the LF-LC, because it could serve up some real competition to other luxury 4-seater GTs of various flavors, including the BMW 6-series, Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi A7. At the very least, if the foreshadowing of Lexus models to come proves accurate, buyers can look forward to a future full of boldly designed hybrids.

he Evora and supercharged Evora S are meant to tempt customers that might otherwise find themselves in Porsche 911s or Caymans. Fizzing with handling feel and road feedback, the Evora and Evora S respond

near-telepathically to any input- steering, throttle, or brakes. Lotus addressed the base car’s only true shortcoming, a lack of outright grunt, with the Evora S. An Eaton-style supercharger adds considerably more thrust than the base car, while a standard sport package, cross-drilled brake rotors and active exhaust system further sharpen the driving experience.

MASERATI GRANTOURISMO MC

he MC takes the GranTurismo line to heightened levels of back road acuity, and while Maserati is keen to point out the connection to its MC Trofeo and GT4 European racing series chassis, it’s far more suited to cross-country trips with the occasional blast down your favorite stretch of deserted blacktop. While its considerable size, at over 16-feet long, and weight, at more than two tons, keep it from being an ace in the hole on track days like a 911 GT3 or Corvette Z06 would, the MC nonetheless does a commendable job at filling the sporty grand tourer role dominated by the Aston Martin brand.

T

Differentiating the MC from the GranTurismo S is a reprogrammed automatic transmission with faster shifts, throttle blips on downshifts that emit a lovely yelp from the new dual-mode exhaust system, and a form of launch control Maserati has uniquely labeled MC Start Strategy. With an anchored down chassis that sits 10mm lower and the gearbox upgrades, the MC will cheat the stopwatch on its way to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds. Meanwhile, front and rear passengers enjoy a roomy interior in leather and Alcantara that might make them forget they’re in a sporty two-door.

MASERATI QUATTROPORTE SPORT GT S

ith a redesigned Quattroporte coming in 2013, the current QP carries the torch as the sole Italian four-door sold in America. No pressure, then, for the current Quattroporte Sport GT S. As the sportiest Maserati sedan, it offers a few more mph top speed (177 total), a few more ponies (up 8 to 433) and costs a good chunk of change ($7,950 more) than the standard Quattroporte S. Those figures also bring the Sport GT S perilously close to stepping on the full tilt Gran Turismo MC’s toes. We’re willing to bet that customers of either of these models could

probably park both cars in their garages if they really wanted to. The Sport GT S justifies its price with sportier transmission programming, lowered and stiffened suspension, and a racier exhaust system. Further jewelry comes in the form of 20 inch wheels, a deep-set front grille and smoked front and rear LEDaccented light clusters. While its gaping maw might bear a certain resemblance to something in the catfish family, the Sport GT S’ position as the sportiest Italian fourdoor on sale in the country is firmly intact.

MCLAREN MP4-12C SPIDER 2013 Best Exotic

cLaren refers to the new MP4-12C Spider as a “luxury convertible sports car.” While loyalists who grew up with McLaren F1 posters plastering their walls will shudder at the idea, McLaren badly needed a competitor to battle the likes of the Lamborghini Gallardo and Ferrari 458 drop-top variants. Enter the Spider. McLaren touts the fact that due to the MP4-12C’s already stiff structure, no additional bracing measures were needed. Nevertheless, the addition of the power roof mechanicals has added 88 pounds to

the McLaren’s curb weight. This will be of little concern as the roadster still accelerates to 62 mph in the same 3.1 seconds as the coupe. 100 mph arrives just a tenth of a second after the coupe, at 6.1 seconds, and top speed is down 3 mph to 204 mph. The performance differences are largely academic. More discernible differences include the wind in your hair, the sound of the twin-turbocharged V-8 filling your ears, and the sunburn on your neck. Its two doors were surely made by the same folks who created the doors to Fort Knox. Like every other element of this uber-sized four-seat coupe, they’re stupendous in length, over-engineered in construction and reveal an opening surely big enough to swallow a Smart Fortwo. This is the car to show the world size really does matter. Opt for the $212,000 CL65 and ‘size’ means a twin-turbo V-12 nuclear reactor that delivers an incomprehensible 738 lb-ft of torque - the aforementioned Smart does fine with 68. Word is that the V12 could actually deliver 885 lb-ft but had to be electronically restrained to prevent it tearing the innards out of the drivetrain. More rational minds will probably opt for the lesser CL63 AMG version. But this is no car for rationality.

Why shouldn’t you be able to treat the drive-thru at In-N-Out Burger like the Nordschleife? A perfect car for a fast in-and-out with a side order of fries, is the bad-to-the-bone C63 AMG Coupe Black Series. With its DTM-inspired bodywork featuring more air intakes than an F-16 fighter, race-style 19-inch rims, and an earth-shaking 6.3-liter 510 hp V-8 under the hood, the Black Series is all business. And what a noise. Just blip the throttle in the drive-thru and it’ll put a froth on your milk shake. With its wider track front and rear, adjustable coil-over suspension and brakes that could stop time, this is a car born to carve curves. And with no back seat - unless you order one - the carpeted ledge makes the perfect picnic tray.

But if you desire the cherry on your icing, you need to check the options box for the Performance Pack. This increases the horsepower corral to a Clydesdale-like 550 while upping the torque quota to a thumping 590 lb-ft. Now select the ‘Sport’ setting on the seven-speed automatic, get proficient with the paddle-shifters, and you and three friends will all share the same ear-to-ear grin. 104

Its 0-to-60 time of 4.5 seconds is up there in supercar territory, while its AMG-tuned suspension, stubby overall length and short wheelbase make it a blast to drive on any twisty backroad. MERCEDES-BENZ SLS AMG GT

E

volution is always the name of the game at Mercedes-Benz. Take the thundering SLS AMG. Seems it was only yesterday - mid-2011, to be precise when it landed Stateside and we were all drooling over its too-cool gullwing doors and mile-long hood. Now wind the clock forward just a year, and the power-meisters at Merc’s AMG performance division are replacing the SLS with a new and improved version they’re calling the SLS GT. Available as a Coupe or Roadster, it lands in showrooms mid-November. Nothing too radical, mind. The bad-boy 6.2-liter V-8 from the current SLS gets an extra 20 horsepower taking the corral up from 563 hp to a healthy 583, though max torque stays the same at 479 lb-ft. Click the stop-watches and you probably won’t notice too much difference - the extra power shaves just a tenth of a second off the 0to-60 time - dropping it from 3.7 to 3.6 seconds - though as we know in the supercar world, every tenth counts. That said, the big Benz will likely feel swifter and more urgent courtesy of on-going development to the dual-clutch AMG Speedshift sevenspeed automatic, which is promised to give quicker shifts, especially in paddle-shifter manual mode. Arguably the biggest change comes in the character of the new SLS GT, which becomes even more hard-edged. The car now rides on stiffer and more aggressive spring/dampers tuning aimed at giving even greater thrills on the track. Visually the SLS GT is changed just enough so your neighbor knows you have the very latest SLS in the driveway. There are new darkened headlamp and tail light lenses, sexy red-painted

brake calipers, and a high-gloss black finish around the grille, door mirrors and those fins on the hood and front fenders. Inside, there’s lots of new gloss-black and faux-suede Alcantara detailing to up the quality look and feel of the cabin. And if you have cash to burn, there’s a new ‘AMG designo Style’ package with plenty of different color choices for the diamond-quilt seat and door panel leather. No word on pricing yet, but we wouldn’t expect much change from the ’12MY SLS which ranged from $190,475 for the coupe to $196,975 for the roadster.

he Nissan GT-R is now in its fifth year for sale on U.S. soil, and with it, its fifth year of kicking the sports car establishment’s butt and taking names. Few cars can match its street cred: zero to 60 mph in less than 3 seconds, a nearly 200mph top speed, neck-snapping cornering and braking ability and enough technology to rival a Predator drone. All this comes in a package that costs less than $100,000. Each model year of the GT-R has seen incremental improvements, and 2013 is no different. Following a raft of improvements to the 2012 model, horsepower and torque have been raised once again, to 545 and 463 respectively, increases of 15 hp and 15 lb-ft. The GT-R is available in two flavors: Premium and Black Edition. The Black Edition adds lightweight forged RAYS wheels, a red and black interior with Recaro leather seats, and a dry carbon-fiber rear wing for its $9,500-dearer price tag. Minor changes rounding out the 2013 model year include a retuned Bilstein Damptronic suspension system, and a rearview monitor.

PAGANI HUAYRA

2013 Best Super Car

P

agani’s Huayra (say “why-ra”) borrows its name from the Andean god of wind, Huayra-tata. Huayra-tata is well-known for its hurricane winds and rains, and is especially fond of whirlwinds. Once those winds find themselves on the other side of the Andes, they become better known by the name Zonda-which the astute will know was Pagani’s previous hypercar which the Huayra replaces. If you read into it as much as we have, you could draw the conclusion that the Huayra is the Zonda’s daddy, of sorts. A glance at the spec sheet will confirm that analogy: the Huayra’s 720 hp and 737 lb-ft of torque are improvements over the majority of Zonda’s many special edition models. The Zonda R packed 750 hp into a stripped-out body capable of bolting to 60 mph in less than 2.7 seconds. The R wasn’t road-legal, however, the fact that the standard Huayra can nearly match its astonishing figures is proof that company founder Horacio Pagani has indeed advanced the game with this new model. Construction is, as in the Zonda R, largely composed of advanced materials-namely carbon fiber and titanium. Together, they grant the Huayra, which is longer and taller than the Zonda, a dry weight of just 2,970 pounds. Add in a few more for the likely U.S.-spec-curb weight, and you’re still left with a car that tips the scales at about the same weight as a Lotus Evora S, just with double the horsepower. While the performance specs are harder-edged, the styling is anything but. The Huayra is still recognizably a Zonda, but the shape is far softer, more matured, and more feminine, and the 112

2013 Exotic Car Buyers Guide

Huayra soothes with its gently contoured flanks and friendlier face. Where aerodynamics previously relied heavily on sharp creases and right angles, active aero measures now allow for a more organic shape that’s more modern and pleasing. The interior is still as flamboyantly Pagani as you’ve come to expect, but more technology, including a touch-screen center stack, has been seamlessly integrated into the artsy surroundings. The Huayra is a leap forward for Pagani into the new-school supercar era of lightweight, high-efficiency turbo technology. Now that the company is seeking U.S. federalization for the Huayra, we can look forward to finally seeing these beauties on American roads.

PORSCHE 911 CARRERA/CARRERA S

2

013 will be a quiet year for the 911 Carrera and Carrera S after being rolled out as all-new models just last year. Again available in coupe and cabriolet variants, both the base model and S will provide their owners with the full 4-seat, rear-engined, flatsix powered 911 experience, while also coddling like never before. A Panamera-derived sloping center console is littered with buttons and switches for accommodating a lengthy option list. Tick every box on the list and you can nearly double the base price if you’re not careful. But it’s not the extravagantly tailored option list that makes the 911 great. Instead, it’s the direct connection between driver and road the car provides. That connection comes standard no matter how many options you choose, and it makes a strong case for sticking to the standard 3.4-liter, 350 hp 911 Carrera coupe. A novel seven-speed manual gearbox provides a compelling alternative to the now-common seven-speed dual clutch PDK automated unit. Of course, buyers checking the $4,080 option box next to the Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) dual-clutch transmission-and many willshouldn’t be disappointed: they’ll be receiving one of the most driverfocused gearboxes available on the market today. Buttery-smooth shifts are available at a flex of the driver’s fingers, or, by selecting the Sport Chrono Package’s “Sport Plus” button, lightning-crack gearchanges intense enough to send shivers down your spine are at your beck and call. Rear-wheel drive is the only flavor available for now, with Carrera 4 and 4S models, Turbo and GT3 variants soon coming down the pipe. In the meantime, the basic 911 Carrera and Carrera S prove the value of a “less is more” approach. And for those that prefer to apply their options liberally, “more is more” is an appropriate statement as well. 116

he anticipated and heavily-revised 981 generation of the Boxster and Boxster S arrived in showrooms this summer, replacing the 987 generation first introduced in the 2005 model year. Porsche has taken great care to modernize the package without screwing up the basic formula that has made the Boxster a success: a pure top-down roadster experience with peerless mid-engine handling. The two powertrain choices are 2.7- and 3.4-liter flat sixes. Both are equipped with direct fuel injection, thermal management and auto start/stop systems, contributing to the 991’s increased power and lower fuel con-

sumption. Transmission choices for both Boxsters are a six-speed manual or a seven-speed PDK dual clutch unit. With a lighter curb weight and more powerful engines, performance is up—60 mph arrives sooner and top speeds are higher. One thing that remains to be seen is how Porsche’s integration of electric power steering, which reviewers complain has sapped some of that trademark Porsche steering feel, continues to evolve with yearly updates. PORSCHE PANAMERA GTS/HYBRID S/TURBO S

nyone who says the Panamera isn’t fast enough to outrun its looks obviously hasn’t driven one. While the styling splits opinions, Porsche’s big sedan has no problem running circles around many sports cars. A trio of “esses” signify the sportiest of the breed: the GTS, Hybrid S and Turbo S. The GTS melds all-wheel drive with a tuned version of the Panamera S’s 4.8-liter V-8, in this case pumping out 430 hp and 384 lb-ft, boosts of 30 and 15 respectively. The Hybrid S adds on to the base Panamera’s V-6 engine and rear-wheel drive

a 47 hp electric motor and 288-volt battery to produce a combined output of 380 hp and a stout 428 lb-ft of torque. The Turbo S is currently the sportiest Panamera on offer, if one can call mid-3 second runs to 60 and 190 mph flat out merely “sporty.” The quarter mile is dispatched in just 11.8 seconds. None of the speed interrupts the civility inside, however, as occupants receive the same genteel civility available in the rest of the Panamera line. But, when the Turbo S is allowed to stretch its legs, there are few sedans on the market able to stay within sight of this big bruiser.

2013 Best Eco Exotic

D

ue to go into production at 9:18 a.m. on September 18th, 2013, with a limited production of 918 units (can you see a pattern emerging here?), the 2014 918 Spyder is set to better the performance of Porsche’s last supercar, the Carrera GT, while simultaneously upping the bar in performance car fuel economy. Thanks to lightweight construction technology and hybrid-electric drive, the 918 Spyder will purportedly better the fuel economy of many mainstream family sedans, while also circling the Nurburgring 10 seconds quicker than the Carrera GT and accelerating to 60 mph in under 3 seconds. Those figures place it ahead of newly unveiled rivals in the speed game like the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and Lamborghini Aventador. And while there may be subtle hints in the curvature of the front end and silvery silhouette of the concept 918 that it did indeed emerge from the same design studio that penned the “lowly” Boxster. Any fears that Porsche may have watered down its supercar for the street are likely to be erased once passersby hear the unique top-exit exhaust system. This exhaust system mirrors the menacing sound of the V-10-engined Carrera GT this car is spiritual successor to. When started, the 918 Spyder defaults to full electric mode, powering away in virtual silence until its 4.6-liter V-8 engine comes to life, at which point 570-gas-fired horsepower is added into the mix with the dual electric motors at the front and rear axles. These motors receive supplemental energy from the KERS (Kenetic Energy Recovery System) unit which rides shotgun. In total, the system will be good for at least 770 hp, wrapped in a lightweight chassis constructed mostly of carbon-fiber reinforced plastics, and it’s plain to see that. 122

ext to a $50-mill Gulfstream V jet, a Rolls-Royce Phantom still provides the most luxurious, most hedonistic, most decadent means of wafting from A to B. Since its debut in 2003, apart from one or two minor wrinkles, the Phantom sedan has remained just about perfect. So it’s appreciated that for 2013, those minor wrinkles have been spray-starched and ironed out with the arrival of Phantom Series II. Of course we’re talking evolution not revolution here - revolution is not the way Rolls rolls. But the styling and mechanical tweaks are just enough to keep the Phantom at the pinnacle of the list of the world’s One-Percentiles as their luxury ride of choice. The most obvious change comes at that majestic front end. Gone are those much-maligned porthole-like headlights in favor of new slim ’n slender rectangular LED units that now match the style of the larger driving lights above. Those, coupled with a new, slightly more rounded bumper design, new, sleeker-looking forged 21-inch alloys, plus a subtle, yet significant change to the frame of that Greek Temple-esque grille - it’s now formed from a single piece of stainless steel—show the neighbors you’ve upgraded to the latest model. Inside changes are fewer but equally welcome. A big criticism of the Phantom has been the overly small nav screen. That gets ditched in favor of a Cinemascope-like 8.8-inch monitor and array of new cameras to show pretty much a 360-degree view of the lurking paparazzi. And back in 2003, a six-speed automatic was the bee’s knees. But since then the world has moved on. Hence this new Phantom gets the latest eight-speed from ZF, which adds to the refinement and responsiveness to the driving experience. Talking of driving experience, for those few who pilot their own Phantom, there’s now the offer of an optional Dynamic Package. It adds additional strengthening crossbars to the aluminum spaceframe, stiffens the suspension, recalibrates the transmission for quicker responses, and even adds a thicker rim for the wheel. Do we hear the name Bentley here? It’s hardly necessary. For its size, the Phantom is amazingly agile and athletic. That big 6.7-liter BMW-sourced V-12 has the thrust of that aforementioned Gulfstream on takeoff—standstill to 60 is covered in under six seconds - while the steering is surprisingly precise and involving. And braking power is quite sensational. And we haven’t even talked about the stretch-out comfort, the refinement, the craftsmanship, the utter sybaritic joy of being transported in this remarkable machine. Best car in the world? Yep, we’d go with that. www.duPontREGISTRY.com

PHANTOM COUPE & DROPHEAD COUPE

St. Tropez. Monte Carlo. Newport Beach. Fort Lauderdale. East Quogue. Anywhere with glitz, glam and water—to park the yacht—is where you’ll find Rolls-Royce’s most expensive offering. This is the only car in the world that comes with handoiled teak decking to match that of your yacht’s; the only Rolls where normally publicity-shy owners - Simon Cowell excepted—are happy for the world to point and stare at them. Its cloth roof is nothing less than a work of art. It’s the biggest top of any modern day convertible, it comes with five layers of sound-deadening insulation and cashmere-blend headlining. JLo in a bikini wouldn’t rotate heads as instantly as the sight of a Phantom Drophead dropping its top. With the top lowered, there is nothing grander than stepping into the Phantom through its majestic rear-hinged ‘suicide’ doors, and sinking back into those leather-lined Barcaloungers. And it’s now even more of a joy to drive, say along the Cote d’Azur’s Grand Corniche overlooking the shimmery Mediterranean, courtesy of the large 6.75-liter V-12 and new eight-speed ZF automatic. Want a little more action, then press the silver ‘Sport’ button and all 531 lb-ft of torque is summoned into action and the car lunges at the horizon like an Exocet missile. But don’t go too fast—above 50 mph, a small hurricane swirls around the rear seating.

Say it with your finest, upper-crust British accent - Rolls-Royce Phantom coup-hay. As they say in the south, coops are for raisin’ chickens. The Phantom Coupe´ is Rolls’ most exclusive model with only 200 or so examples handassembled each year - most owners who want their Phantoms with two doors opt for the drophead convertible version. Yet to us, this two-door hardtop is also the most elegant, most stunningly-proportioned Rolls-Royce model in the line-up, with its low, sexy roofline, hefty rear roof pillars and gorgeous slope to its rear window. It has also benefitted well from the styling

changes made to all Phantoms for 2013, with include the jettisoning of those mildly-ridiculous frisbee-shaped headlights in favor of slimline rectangular units with their bright-white LEDs. While the Coupe´may no longer be the sportiest Rolls-Royce model - that honor goes to the twin-turbo’d Ghost - this 18-plus-foot fastback does very nicely with its 453-horse 6.75-liter V-12. Zero to 60 mph may be covered in 5.6 seconds, but performance here is measured in the hours it can spend spearing crossing continents close to its 155 mph-limited max. uch of Rolls-Royce’s stellar sales in 2011—a record 3,538 cars delivered—is down to the not-unexpected demand of the Ghost range of sedan and extended wheelbase models. Plus a real focus on offering customers whatever their hearts desire with its Rolls-Royce Bespoke program—python-skin dashboard anyone? And the ghostly appeal will only heighten in 2013 with the much-anticipated arrival of the two-door Ghost Coupe, rumored to be badged Corniche, followed closely by a cloth-topped drophead convertible in 2014 or ‘15. While the plutocratic Phantom is still largely the domain of Jeeves-the-chauffeur, the much less ostentatious Ghost is rightly being enjoyed by owners who love to get behind the wheel and drive. It figures. Beneath that stunningly-elegant skin is a whole lot of BMW 7-Series, including that mighty 6.6-liter 563-horse V-12 and molasses-smooth eight-speed automatic. Despite its 5,500-pound bulk, the Ghost can pick up its skirts and waft from standstill to 60mph in an impressive 4.8 seconds. Yet what drops jaws is the athletic manner at which this majestic carriage can scythe around curves. As you’d expect, with selfleveling air springing, the ride quality is magic-carpet-like. For the ultimate in ghostly comfort, the stretched-by seven-inch extended wheel base model gets close to the Phantom in spacial luxury without looking from the outside like a prom-night Town Car. 128

There are few cars that can garner as much of a status as this Rolls-Royce. With engine number "001" it is likely the first LHD drive Rolls into the US. To add to this car’s already exclusive status, it was specifically built for none other than Cary Grant, the world-famous actor best known for his role in movies such as “North by Northwest,” “Arsenic and Old Lace” and many more. Grant used this as a personal car, taking famous co-stars and Hollywood starlets such as Marilyn Monroe for a ride in this beautiful car. It was traded into an authorized Rolls-Royce and Bentley dealer in 1982 and was quickly sold to a collector in Texas. The collector kept the Silver Cloud in his very own private museum for 30 years , and is now ready to sell it to a new owner. This is a very classic Rolls Royce that has been cherished since the day it was built. Included with the car is the original owner’s manual with a message from Grant that says, “My Best Rolls-Royce,” verifying his ownership and love for the car. Few collectors and admirers have had the chance to touch or even see this car, but now you have the chance to call this Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud LHD yours.

The company expects to produce up to 5,000 of the swoopy four doors by year’s end, with another 20,000 on tap for 2013. Driving impressions from the media seem to be positive, with praise heaped on the car’s handling, due in part to its lithium-ion battery being mounted so low in the chassis. A.D. Tramontana Josep Rubau’s fusion of a Formula One car and a fighter jet is a car for the engineering connoisseur that wants something truly different – a car that is much a piece of challenging art as an all-conquering supercar. The price started at $500,000, but the options list includes a diamond encrusted instrument binnacle and cars have sold for $1 million+. Two inline seats offer improved weight distribution and the F1-style wings produce 500 pounds of downforce. It also comes with a carbon chassis, horizontal Ohlins dampers and carbon-fiber wheels. Then there’s the 720hp Mercedes 5.5-liter twin turbo, that can be detuned to 500hp at the touch of a button, which propels it to 60mph in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 201mph. www.tramontanagroup.com

Arrinera Automotive Arrinera might be a new name and Poland is certainly an unusual base for a supercar manufacturer. But the company has legendary designer Lee Noble – the man behind Noble Automotive – at the helm and is as international as efforts get. A 6.2-liter crate LS9 engine pumps out 650hp and 604lb/ft of torque. In this 2,866 pound form it is enough to send this new machine to 60mph in 3.2 seconds and to a top speed of 211mph. The advantage of the relatively simple construction and crate LS9 engine comes in the price. Arrinera is aiming at $160,000 for a car that should easily compete with the Gallardo and Ferrari 458 in terms of outright performance. www.arrinera.com/en

Campagna T-Rex Canadian based Campagna Motors is in the business of making the world’s finest three-wheel side by side vehicles. From their track-ready T-REX, to their retro-styled V13R, Campagna Motors knows how to build quality cars in a unique and stylish manner. Of course, don’t think that one less wheel means less power, because these cars are as quick as ever. The T-REX 14RR can go from a complete standstill to 60mph in just 3.5 seconds. Eloquent styling and good old-fashioned torque take place all but just 4 inches above the ground, giving a new meaning to “hugging the road.” If your daily commute is growing old, Campagna Motors can turn your morning commute into one of the most unique and exciting experiences out there. www.campagnamotors.com

de Macross

Epique GT1 The GT1 is the first offering from Canadian outfit, the de Macross Motors Corp (DMMC) that was set up in 2009. The de Macross uses a supercharged 5.4-liter V-8 sourced from American company Roush Yates Racing Engines, which also makes powerplants for Ford’s NASCAR outfit. The monocoque chassis is made from carbon fiber and aluminium, and performance is suitably brisk: 0-60mph in 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 230mph+. There are also some neat technical touches, like active ride control systems that drop the ground clearance to 28mm at high speed to ensure ultimate road holding. And with an asking price of $1.5 million, exclusivity is assured from the outset. www.demacross.com

GTA Spano This ambitious hypercar was first revealed as a model back in 2008, and the Spanish manufacturer has spent until now honing its all-new hypercar into the ultimate road rocket. The Spano is still absolutely on the cutting edge of car design. The chassis is a combination of carbon-fiber, Kevlar and titanium, which makes it every bit as advanced as the Pagani Huayra. And the 820hp, 8.3-liter V-10, naturally aspirated and without resorting to turbos, is a unique engine that gives the Spano a truly unique character. With a 0-60mph time of less than 3 seconds and a top speed of more than 218mph, this puts the Spano right into the mix with the likes of Pagani and Koenigsegg. www.gtaconcept.com

Marussia B1 The cutting edge styling makes the Marussia B1 stand out from literally any crowd and this fledgling Russian company’s first sportscar is likely to sell like hot cakes. A more angular Pagani Zonda, a more curvaceous Ferrari Enzo, it just looks right. It’s priced right, too, $150,000 in its most basic form. The most powerful 420hp version, with a 2.8-liter turbocharged Cosworth engine, will inevitably cost more. Performance will be impressive, rather than stunning, with the basic car hitting 60mph in five seconds and a top end speed of 155mph with the basic car. The quicker 420hp variant will be good for 60mph in 3.7 seconds, but this is a car that will sell on its looks. www.marussiamotors.ru/en/

Marussia B2 If the B1 is an elegant looking thing, the B2 is simply insane. The B2 is much more aggressive with flared box section sides, a front that looks like it could slice and spit out the car in front and an equally radical back end. In fact it looks more like a show concept than a real edition and it’s a brave statement of intent. The B2 will boast the same engine line-up as the B1, a naturally-aspirated 3.5-liter sourced from Nissan pushing out 300hp or the 420hp 2.8-liter twin turbo Cosworth lump. The B2 costs significantly more, though, $310,000 (€250,000) to be precise. www.marussiamotors.ru/en/

Mastretta MXT This Mexican sportscar comes with a two-liter turbocharged powerplant sourced from VW producing 250hp in a car that weighs just 2,100 pounds. It’s a true lightweight sportscar, then, and features an aluminium semi-monocoque and extensive use of carbon fiber. The VW engine is relatively bulletproof, too, and in this frame will send you to 60mph in 4.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 160mph. Design wise the MXT is compact, relatively fuss free and clean, and the price tag of $58,000 is within the realms of the now discontinued Lotus Exige that would likely form its closest competitor. www.mastrettacars.com

Morgan Three-Wheeler UK manufacturer Morgan started out making three-wheelers when such cars were perfectly normal, rather than a modern day oddity. This is something of a tribute act to those early days. It is powered by a 1982cc V-Twin engine from S&S in Wisconsin that produces just 115hp but weighs just 1,100 pounds. So it hits 60mph in 4.5 seconds and tops out at 125mph, but that’s more than enough in an open car with an inherently unstable rear. Renowned car nut Jay Leno has ordered one and the little Morgan has become a sales sensation around the world as drivers look for a car that is fun at legal speeds. www.morgan3wheeler.co.uk

Mosler MT900S The Mosler MT900 has been with us since 2001, although the S version was launched in 2005 and the car has constantly received updates since then. Underneath there is a carbon-fiber monocoque and a 530hp LS7 7-liter powerplant. The low weight counts for a lot and the MT900S hits 60mph in 3.1 seconds and does 180mph+. George Lucas was one of the early customers, but the road car remains a rare find. That could make it a good investment, especially considering the relative bargain bucket $189,000 asking price. www.moslerauto.com

Noble M600 British supercar manufacturer Noble was famous for producing monstrously quick cars at a reasonable price. But the Noble M600 marks a new chapter and a much higher price point. The M600 is a driver’s car, without frills like anti-lock brakes and paddle shifters, but what is there is intriguing. It weighs just 1250kg, despite a relatively straightforward spaceframe chassis, and with 650hp of Yamaha-sourced 4.4-liter twin turbo engine it is brutally fast. It hits 60mph in just three seconds, 120mph in 8.9 seconds and has an impressive 225mph top end speed. At $330,000 it is relatively expensive, but that’s the price of a handbuilt hypercar that will embarrass much more famous machines on track. www.noblecars.com

Puritalia 427 The rebirth of the AC Cobra is a phrase we’ve all heard countless times before, but the Puritalia 427 is a thoroughly modern slant on the legend. It is also a brute, or it will be. The Naples, Italy-based start-up is aiming to deliver the first cars in 2015. Weighing just 2,400 pounds, the 427 will come with two engine options. The first is a mildly mental naturally aspirated 5.0-liter GM lump pumping out 445hp. The second is a supercharged option knocking out a thoroughly indecent 605hp. It also looks incredible and we cannot wait for the finished production car, even though it will cost up to $200,000 when we can finally get it on these shores. www.puritalia.com

Rimac Concept_One An electric supercar has been the Holy Grail for manufacturers for years, and now a fledgling Croatian company has unveiled the Rimac Concept_One. Freed from the cooling and packaging constraints of the traditional internal combustion engine, Rimac has produced a sleek, low-slung hypercar that looks every inch of its $980,000 price tag. An electric motor for each wheel adds up to the electrical equivalent of 1088hp. Despite the carbon fiber monocoque and bodywork, the Rimac weighs a portly 4,299 pounds, but that is down to the heavy battery packs required to cope with the conflicting demands of a 190mph top end speed and a 0-60mph time of 2.8 seconds and a range of 375 miles. www.rimac-automobili.com

Rossion Q1 Dean Rosen’s 1G Racing started out importing the Noble M400 in to the US as a kit car. But when Lee Noble set his sights higher, Rosen bought the copyright and set about developing the M400 into a weapon aimed specifically at the US market. The Rossion Q1 was the result, a more luxurious version of the original road rocket. Its 450hp, twin turbo Ford Duratec engine is enough to propel the car to 60mph in 3.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 189mph, despite weighing less than 2,500 pounds, so on pure pace the Rossion is a match for almost anything. It costs just $90,700 complete with drivetrain, which makes the Rossion a performance bargain. www.rossioncars.com

Soleil Anadi The Corvette Z06 is a stunning car in terms of outright numbers, but Soleil Motors felt that it could be better. The Anadi is the result. Spada Concepts and Unique Autosport were involved in the production process and the finished car is a world away from the Z06. That, in some way, justifies the near $300,000 asking price. Soleil took design cues from the likes of Ferrari’s 599 to create bespoke coachwork for the supremely fast American supercar. The 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 produces 651hp and has broken the 200mph barrier in testing. It even comes with ‘polar motion’ wheels, fitted with magnets, which improve fuel consumption and acceleration. www.soleilmotors.com

Sport Chassis XL The SportChassis XL is the world’s largest production pickup on the road today. With an airy cabin, noise reduction technology, quality materials, a ride enhancement package, and the latest gadgetry, the SportChassis XL is also one of the most luxurious and high-tech trucks on the market. However, don’t be mistaken by its good looks because this truck comes with an engine fit for a semi-truck. Now you can tow at your heart’s desire, and still ride in style. From the exterior to the interior, the SportChassis XL provides the customer with unprecedented style, power, and durability. www.sportchassis.com

SSC Tuatara Shelby Super Cars has come a long way in a short time and the state-of-theart Tuatara should soon become the fastest production car on the road. Penned by Pininfarina designer Jason Castriota, the Tuatara bridges the gap between Lamborghini and fighter plane with alarming ease. Powered by a 6.9-liter twin turbo V-8 that redlines at 9200rpm it pumps out 1350hp and weighs just 2,750 pounds thanks to extensive use of carbon fiber. The Tuatara, named after a New Zealand lizard with peaks on its back, is offered with a paddle shift gearchange or, more intriguingly, a seven-speed manual gearbox that would make it one of the only cars in this class that still offers a traditional gearchange. A $1 million price tag makes it a relative bargain, too, for a 276mph car anyway. www.sscnorthamerica.com

Tushek Renovatio T500 If the car looks familiar, it should, this Slovenian supercar started out life as the K1 Attack Roadster. Tushek, though, has taken the car to a whole new level and price point. More than 80 percent of the car has been changed from the original K1 kit car and it now comes with the engine from an Audi R8 4.2liter V-8 and carbon fiber bodywork. With 444hp and a dry weight of 2,400 pounds the Tushek has the performance to worry the more established players. Only the select few would want such a hardcore machine over something more usable like a Ferrari or Lamborghini. That suits Tushek just fine, the company will make just 30. www.tushek.com

Wiesmann GT MF5 It might look like a classic English sportscar, but the Wiesmann MF5 GT is thoroughly German, and thoroughly modern. Because under those classic, swooping lines beats the heart of the BMW M5. The V-8 twin turbo is good for 550bhp, which sends this German rocket flying to 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 155mph. And with 30 percent less bodyweight than the BMW, the MF5 is a rocket through the gears. It’s in the same price bracket as the Lamborghini LP570-4 and dangerously close to the Ferrari 458 Italia, but then this is a hand built sportscar with character literally oozing from every pore. www.weismann.co.uk

Zenvo ST1 A $1.8 million hypercar powered by a GM-sourced 7-liter V-8 boasting both a turbo and a supercharger generating 1104hp was an almighty way for Denmark to enter the hypercar race in 2009. With a production run of just 15 cars, the Zenvo makes the Bugatti Veyron look common. It also hits 60mph in 3.0 seconds and hits an electronically controlled top speed of 233mph. A spaceframe chassis clothed in carbon-fiber panels means the Zenvo has some competition on the technical side at this price point. It does have an aggressive, angular design, though, and a 3,020 pound curb weight that makes it 1,320 pounds lighter than the Veyron and significantly lighter than the similarly powered Koenigsegg Agera R. www.zenvousa.com
